on three important areas where the company has observed a lack of skills in the market with the channel. These are around the cloud transformation journey, Big Data and analytics and Internet of Things. The new division aims to provide consulting on new technology and solutions for numerous verticals and help partners to sell those solutions effectively. “We are showcasing around 25 different solutions at our recently-launched executive briefing multi-vendor solutions centre, with plans to expand it
Additionally, the company is also presenting its new data centre distribution arm launched earlier in the year, BigTec, at the ICT trade show. Under the BigTec umbrella, it will be featuring solutions from vendors such as Nutanix, Varmour, Tubonomic and Rubrik. “BigTec is growing at a fast pace, as the market demand for cloud and converged solutions have also increased. Our aim is to focus on few vendors as we are in the start-up mode. We want to drive quality versus quantity,” added Clements.
further,” Balakrishnan added. “The initial response we have got from partners and vendors who have visited the centre has been fantastic.” The marketing initiative from the distributor termed Red Enable also enables partners through training and joint end-user demand generation focusing on certain technology verticals such as hyperconverged infrastructure. Going forward, the distributor will continue to focus and develop on its newly launched solutions centre and consulting arm.
The MD went on to add that while partners can depend on the distributor for support with payment terms and logistics, the company’s expertise lies in advising and helping partners mitigate the risk of signing new technologies. “We are here to help drive demand from finding a lead right through its closure,” he said. Over the course of the next year, we will see the company focusing on educating partners and customers on “new breakthrough technologies while providing real solutions to today’s challenges.”

Polycom: UAE employees favour video
Daniel Schmierer, Polycom
Polycom has used GITEX to announce research that reveals UAE employees are increasingly favouring collaborative communications solutions in the workplace. ‘Examining Video Collaboration at the Workplace’ analysed workers’ attitudes towards video collaboration. employees across the UAE have a positive outlook towards video collaboration as it allows them to work more effectively from anywhere and derive the benefits of strong internal and external business collaboration. Employees in the UAE also believe that the option of video collaboration in a workplace allows for flexible working and working from anywhere. 90 percent of employees say that the ability to video helps them enjoy the main benefits of flexible working, which includes the ability to balance work and family responsibilities, be more productive and be more satisfied with their jobs. The research also revealed that 50 percent of respondents believe that the ability to connect with colleagues or external parties from virtually any location
and at any time is one of the main benefits of video collaboration for their job roles and business. Employees also classed security as one of their top priorities for business communication solutions, in addition to ‘fast responses times’. Research showed that UAE employees are not unfamiliar with video collaboration as only one in every four say that they needed technical training or an internal champion at work. “The UAE is one of the leading international business hubs, and video collaboration technologies have become key for business and workforce productivity in the region,” said Daniel Schmierer, area sales vice president, Middle East and Africa, Polycom. “No longer are meetings held within the confines of the boardroom; video collaboration has been
instrumental in eliminating communication barriers and empowering the workforce to collaborate from anywhere. Polycom’s new research indicates that there is still progress to be made before we start seeing the true proliferation of enterprise video collaboration technology.” Schmierer added, “In order to improve the adoption of video at the workplace, organisations need to invest in solutions that are easy to use and fully address the communication needs of their employees and business. The collaboration technology should offer enterprise-grade security and integrate seamlessly with all other systems that the organisation and its business affiliates use. In addition, it is advisable that the solution promotes mobility and working from anywhere.”
NEC Payments launches payment processing on Microsoft Azure
Andrew Sims, NEC Payments
NEC Payments and Microsoft Gulf have launched at a PCIDSS compliant and MasterCard certified card, virtual, and mobile payment transaction processing environment on Microsoft Azure at GITEX.
NEC Payments’ transaction processing software has been designed using Microsoft technologies to operate securely within purely virtualised environments and is therefore native to Microsoft Azure infrastructure. The new technology will be available immediately. Andrew Sims, CEO and director of NEC Payments, said, “This is a first-of-its-kind deployment that combines the virtual computing and networking infrastructure available in Microsoft Azure with NEC Payments’ highly-innovative
and secure payment processing platform. The solution offers our and Microsoft’s customers security, flexibility, resilience and redundancy, that can be rapidly deployed with significantly lower capital expenditure than has previously been possible”. “As part of our ISV (Independent Software Vendor) partnership engagement, Microsoft has worked closely with NEC Payments during the design and deployment of the environment on Azure by providing access to specialists within its ISV and Azure teams”,
said Michael Mansour, chief innovation officer, Microsoft Gulf, said. “Thus, NEC Payments not only completed the technical aspects of the project in a short period of time, but also aligned its product offering with Microsoft’s objective of helping its customers drive digital transformation and use the power and scale of the Microsoft Azure Cloud to enable payments transaction processing”. NEC Payments and Microsoft are now working together to build payment integration into other Microsoft cloud-based business applications.

Kaspersky Lab puts spotlight on critical infrastructure
Mohammad Amin Hasbini, Kaspersky Lab
Kaspersky Lab has used GITEX to present an overview of the changing cyber-threat landscape in the Middle East with special emphasis on the protection of critical infrastructures and Smart Cities. According to Kaspersky Security Network, an average of 17.4 percent of users in the Middle East encountered cyberthreats originating from the
Internet in the third quarter of 2016. The countries with the highest percentage of users affected by these threats were Qatar (24.4 percent), United Arab Emirates (22.8 percent), Kuwait (20.1 percent), Saudi Arabia (17.9 percent) and Egypt (17.1 percent). At the same time, an average of 47 percent of users in the region encountered malware that spread in local networks, via USBs and storage disks. “Raising awareness about cyber-threats is fundamental for smart environments,” said Mohammad Amin Hasbini,
senior security researcher, Global Research & Analysis Team, Kaspersky Lab. “Rapid technological advances in recent years require threat intelligence research and a strategic collaboration between critical infrastructure and smart cities. A cyber incident can have a major impact on the economical, reputational and productivity aspects of an organisation, and can also threaten lives. Consequently, we have been making a lot of efforts at Kaspersky Lab towards securing the different components of Smart Cities, contributing our
expertise within the Securing Smart Cities not-for-profit global initiative, and that’s predominantly why we are highlighting these issues this week at GITEX.” Hasbini added, “Our recent study investigated city kiosks as well as speed cameras and their supporting infrastructure. Our experts discovered that cybercriminals could easily compromise these cameras and manipulate the data collected. To prevent such situations in real life, there should be a comprehensive approach to the development and implementation of smart devices into a city’s infrastructure.”
