DarkMatter... moving to Smart Cities, security has become part of the fabric at the leadership level; it is not an after-thought, says Harshul Joshi, VP for Cyber Governance, Risk and Compliance, DarkMatter. Joshi says the protection of critical infrastructure is of paramount importance to DarkMatter. “If you look at the industrial control systems, they were never meant to be connected. It is an architecture that was never created with security in mind. Now all these systems are getting online and you have to put a strong layer of security on top of it.” He adds that most of the security breaches that we see
today can be avoided by putting in place basic controls. “Before you revamp your security architecture, make sure that you invest in basic building blocks. It is important to classify data and know what are your information assets and where they are.” Joshi says there is a strong momentum towards compliance in the region now. “This region needs to work with rest of the world. For example, if you are opening up an e-commerce platform, you need to make sure that you are PCI compliant. The fact that the UAE is hosting ISO/IEC SC 27 conference in Abu Dhabi is testimonial to the fact that this region is getting

positives. “If you look at GDP of this country, a major chunk of it comes from operational technologies. So it is important to look at security operations from an OT perspective as well, not just IT,” says Joshi.

Oracle highlights customer coups
Arun Khehar, Oracle
Oracle’s presence at GITEX has been a productive, timely learning curve, according to Arun Khehar, senior vice president, applications business, ECEMEA. The firm has announced a range of partnerships with public and private sector organisations,
including FGB, Sharjah Investment and Development Authority and Apparel Group and Khehar believes these firms have been hugely ambitious in their technology deployments. “Apparel is one example of a company that is moving very quickly to the cloud,” he said. “The owners have no issue in putting all kinds of applications – financials, payroll, supply chain, you name it – in an Oracle cloud.” Khehar did concede, however, that Oracle has work to do in terms of understanding customer needs better. “A lot of companies are in their cloud infancy, so it’s important that we use GITEX to gain a better understanding of how we can make their transition easier.”

He also believes that the timing of the trade show plays nicely into Oracle’s hands.
The company hosted its global OpenWorld conference last month in San Francisco, but the event has coincided with GITEX in previous years. “This year it’s been ideal,” he said. “It means that just a few weeks after things have been announced in the US, we can bring these things straight to GITEX. This adds real value to our customers and also means that more people are able to fly in from around the world to join us in Dubai. “The footfall we’ve had here has been fantastic. Ministers from everywhere – Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, among others – have visited us, and that shows the level of interest we’ve generated.”

Here at GITEX we also wanted to discuss the different success stories of customers across industries like real estate, banking, retail and aviation among others. As an example, one of our customers – Aldar Properties, won various accolades like the ‘Construction and Real Estate Deployment of the Year’ award at CNME’s ICT Achievement Awards’ and ‘Digital Excellence’ award from Oracle.”
Companies in the region are keen to gain a larger share of the benefits from driving digital transformation within their organisations. Leveraging different cloud deployment platforms would enable them to upscale their digital agenda.” Speaking about the regional market, Fernandes highlighted that there has been an increased uptake in cloud solutions among enterprises here in the Middle East. “Companies in the region are keen to gain a larger share of the benefits from driving
digital transformation within their organisations. Leveraging different cloud deployment platforms would enable them to upscale their digital agenda. In addition, more and more organisations want to harness the value of their data. They want real time analysis and
reports of their data and moving to the cloud gives the ability to do that.” Post GITEX, Fernandes underlined that they will continue on developing innovations that will further enable their customers’ transition to the cloud.
