were crucial in Huawei maintaining this vision. Li Xiangyu, vice president of Public Affairs and Communications for Huawei Middle East, reinforced this commitment from Huawei to drive the digital ecosystem, by continuing to push for “active and open collaboration with local partners.” Visiting from Bahrain was H.E. Dr Mohammed A. Al Amer, chairman of Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority. He emphasised the need for governments to foster an environment of collaboration between organisations, and
encourage the growth of SMEs in the region. H.E. Al Amer also noted that government leaders in the region needed to invest in creating a “digitallyfluent” population, if digitisation efforts were to succeed. “Having a digitallyequipped infrastructure is no longer enough,” he said. “The people need to be given the opportunity to gain the skill set they need for this region to capitalise on digital transformation initiatives.” Ugo Valenti, CEO of Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, praised the Middle East as a region prime to adopt digital strategies. “The vitality and commitment of the governments here are enabling us to pursue

This was later confirmed by the findings of a Huawei and Deloitte white paper, which was launched at the event by Safder Nazir, Huawei Middle East’s vice president of Digital Industries, and Emmanuel Duro, partner and TMT leader for Deloitte and Touche Middle East. The paper found that while there is room for improvement in the GCC in terms of the national ICT index, the technologydependent government visions of each country are spearheading the region’s digital journey. The event concluded with a panel discussion with influential IT leaders from across the region.

This low rate of adoption – and ultimately, preparedness – has consequences: 64% think they will suffer a negative business impact from cybercriminal activity this year. To achieve a comprehensive cyber resilience strategy, organizations need to first assess the actual capabilities of their current email security service.” “Email continues to remain the attack vector for delivering security threats such as ransomware,

More than 90% of cyberattacks start in email and while email itself is seldom the end goal for the attackers, over 70% of these attacks lead to other systems in the network. These email attacks predominantly feature techniques such as spear-phishing, ransomware and impersonation of key employees,” Bekker added. The recent Mimecast Email Security Risk Assessment (ESRA) report revealed that the number of impersonation attacks detected during the quarter rose more than 400% last quarter, while the most recent ESRA revealed that when the data was sliced by incumbent email security vendor it was found that even some of the top email cloud players were missing commonly found advanced security threats, highlighting the need for a multi-layered approach to email security. Rubrik flaunts ‘freedom’ of data at debut GITEX outing A lot of companies in the Middle East – particularly governments – are innovating very quickly, and this means that we are reaching a stage where even legacy companies can’t keep up.” Roland Stritt, Rubrik
Exclusive Networks partner Rubrik is delighted to be participating at its first ever GITEX Technology Week, with the firm having launched its presence in the Middle East just 10 months ago. The firm recently announced the 4.1 version release of its Cloud Data Management platform, as well as introducing support for Google Cloud, AWS and Azure Stack. Roland Stritt, Rubrik’s director of channels for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, said he is extremely enthused by the enhancements, and that they will help to achieve the company’s overarching goal. “We want to achieve the freedom of data across environments,” he said. “The hot topics that CIOs of today are forced to deal with revolve around security and cloud, and our platform takes a lot of the associated headaches away from those issues.” Stritt went on to add that Rubrik’s new service offers the
flexibility around information that organisations demand. “Our platform provides all data availability anytime, anywhere, independent of what type of environment you want to use.” Stritt added that it was important to balance the free flow of data with responsible security procedures. “Having free data doesn’t mean that you weaken your security stance,” he said. “It’s essential that you keep control. A lot of companies in the Middle East – particularly governments – are innovating very quickly, and this means that we are reaching a stage where even legacy companies can’t keep up.” With the Cloud Data Management platform set to launch in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain in two weeks, Stritt is eager for Rubrik to make its mark in the region. “We hope to initiate a lot of business from GITEX, and to show that we are serious about this market,” he said.

Samer Miyah, Kodak Alaris’ cluster marketing manager for the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Russia, highlighted that the company is in the process of transforming itself from a hardware manufacturer, to a solutions provider – integrating both hardware and software into the products. “What differentiatesthis series from other scanners is our new exception handling features,” said Miyah. “This enables realtime, on the spot validation of documents, meaning if a customer receives a batch of documents that are missing a signature, the software that is integrated into the S2000
series will automatically identify this and alert the user that there is something missing. This ultimately prevents time wasting, and enables customers to provide the service at a more efficient rate.” Kodak Alaris also claims that the S2000 is the “only scanner in the market” with a microfeed prevention feature. “A common mistake that is made when scanning large batches of documents is pushing them in too far and causing a paper jam,” said Miyah. “With the S2000, the machine now does all the work, in that it ensures that the documents are aligned correctly before scanning begins. Rather than just detecting a micro-feed issue, which most scanners in the market do, it actually prevents it because of the technology we have installed in it.”
The company is using GITEX Technology Week as a means of showcasing this latest range to both government and banking sector customers in a bid to “churn the competition,” according to Miyah. In addition, Kodak Alaris is promoting its Partner Relationship Management Portal (PRMP) – an online portal which can be accessed by partners to gain access to the company’s sales and marketing tools. “Over 80 percent of our business is done through our partners and resellers,” said Miyah. “For this reason, it is important that they have the opportunity to better position themselves through our marketing tools, which allow them to compare our products to others in the market, meaning they are more equipped when it comes to talking to end users.”
