18_VOLVO DAYS 2024
The pace of electrification may be dissapointing the Swedish company but it is positive about the Middle East’s new energy transition.
The
BACK TO THE FUTURE IN SWEDEN
Welcome. I am still trying to get my head around the fact that it has been almost 10 years since I was last in Sweden to visit the home of Volvo CE. Actually it has been so long that when I last visited Eskilstuna the venerable brand was still in exile in Gothenburg with the rest of its estranged family members.
Moving back to your home town can feel like a failure to some people. A shift down in ambition and a slide into a comfort zone. However, talking to the leading members of the Volvo team at the Volvo Days event, the move back to where it all started is a significant statement that the company feels as confident and bold as it has for a generation.
Personally, the Volvo Days event in Sweden also felt like a significant few days for the wider industry.
During the event, Volvo showcased a future where electric construction machinery isn’t just a possibility but an imminent reality. As demonstrated at the event, the advancements in electric technology are not only environmentally beneficial but also promise increased efficiency and reduced operational costs.
Volvo’s unveiling of their latest electric machinery models highlighted the significant strides made in battery technology, durability, and power output. These machines, with their quieter operation and zero emissions, are set to revolutionise the construction industry by addressing two of its most pressing issues: environmental impact and noise pollution. The seamless integration of these machines into existing workflows, as seen in the live demonstrations, underscores their practicality and readiness for market adoption.
Furthermore, the commitment to sustainability was evident, with Volvo’s vision aligning perfectly with global environmental goals. The emphasis on reducing carbon footprints without compromising on performance is a clear signal to the industry: the future is electric, and it’s time to get on board.
For the Middle Eastern market, where the construction industry is booming, the transition to electric machinery could be a game-changer.
Not only would it help in meeting the region’s ambitious sustainability targets, but it could also lead to cost savings in the long run due to lower fuel costs and reduced maintenance needs.
So it is significant for me that Volvo and FAMCO have been trialling the starring wheel loader of the lauch during the last 12 months. Answers on a postcard or to my email if you know when the last time that happened was.
Ultimately, the Volvo Days event has set a new benchmark, showcasing that electric construction machinery is not just a futuristic concept but a tangible and practical solution for today’s challenges.
And who knows, after a few more events like this, maybe we will all start feeling close to the widespread adoption of electric machinery in the market, and the heralding in of a new era of cleaner, quieter, and more efficient construction.

MRT159: FLATTOPS COMBINE FOR NEW DUBAI HIGH RISE
Raimondi Middle East has deployed three MRT159 flat-top tower cranes in one of the Dubai’s fastest growing districts, Jumeriah Village Circle. At work for the construction of a 25-storey residential building, the cranes are located in a growing part of the city with both residential and commercial developments underway.
“We are excited to contribute to the city’s thriving new communities by deploying three Raimondi MRT159 flat-top tower cranes to the project contractor,” stated Wael Hasan, General Manager, Raimondi Cranes. The jobsite builds on a long-lasting partnership, Hasan explained.
Installed in March, the cranes will remain onsite for approximately 18 months. Erected with jib lengths ranging between 38m and 44m, the MRT159s are currently freestanding at heights of 51m, 45m, and 42m. Boasting a maximum lifting capacity of 8t, the machines are equipped with a 45kW hoisting gear, lifting at a maximum speed of 136m/min and have a drum capacity of 840m.
“Due to the site location and
its congested nature, we had to carefully plan the installation of each crane, including operational and positioning aspects to ensure maximum site safety and efficiency,” he explained.
Erected within a day, one of the key characteristics of the MRT159 is ease of installation; the model arrives onsite with all parts preassembled ropes passed and rope connections installed, facilitating field procedures.
“Based on site progression, each machine will be climbed in three stages to reach the final heights of 102m, 105m, and 111m; operations that will be carried out by our team,” concluded Hasan.
Raimondi Middle East has had a strong flow of commercial activity in the region, particularly in the United Arab Emirates, with more than 100 cranes installed in the past year, and in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, now counting more than 70 cranes deployed across various sites.
Upon completion, the high-rise building will feature world-class amenities including swimming pools, a fitness centre, and dedicated children’s play areas.
SOLID PARTNERSHIP
CMME LOOKS AT GARGASH GENERAL TRADING AND KCP
CONCRETE PUMPS’ SUCCESSFUL FIRST YEAR SINCE LAUNCH
KCP, a globally renowned brand in the concrete pump industry, has significantly impacted the market since its establishment in South Korea in 2002. With branches in six countries and partnerships across over 60 countries, KCP is known for its specialised vehicle technology, including industrial vacuum trucks, rescue trucks, and firefighting trucks. Recently, KCP has aggressively entered the Middle East market, aiming to strengthen its presence through a strategic partnership with Gargash General Trading. In late 2022, KCP and Gargash formalised their partnership, marking a pivotal moment for both companies. Mahmoud Darras, the Sales Manager
at Gargash, highlights to CMME the opportunities for the two companies in the UAE, stating, “The United Arab Emirates (UAE) construction industry is experiencing significant growth, driven by numerous new projects across the emirates, particularly in the residential sector in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.”
This expansion has led to an increased demand for concrete pumps, he adds: “Furthermore, there is a substantial demand for concrete pumps in infrastructure projects related to the oil and gas sector.”
Gargash, rebuilding its heavy equipment division in 2022, sought a global and reliable brand to expand its business. The partnership’s success was evident when Gargash ordered three KCP concrete pumps, which arrived in March 2023, and this has provided a springboard for a successful launch that has continued into 2024.
KCP’s concrete pumps are distinguished by their simplicity, strength, and user-friendliness. The philosophy of KCP manufacturing is that simple is the best. Its pumps are known for their streamlined hydraulic and electrical systems, making them easy to use and troubleshoot. The pumps’ robust design, featuring strengthened steel, ensures reliability even in harsh environments. Features that have been welcomed in the UAE, says Darras.
KCP’s self-confessed “commitment to innovation” is evident in its use of advanced materials and technologies. The pumps are lighter and more efficient, offering better fuel efficiency and less down-time. The use of steel, known for durability and reduced weight, combined with Rexroth main pumps for their performance, underscores KCP’s dedication to quality and performance.
“KCP pumps are furnished with Rexroth main
pumps, delivering enhanced energy efficiency, exceptional pumping speed, and rapid hydraulic response,” says Darras, adding that the construction, “utilises Strenx steel, a durable Swedish-made steel characterized by reduced weight and extended service life.
“The electrical system is also meticulously designed for simplified diagnostics and maintenance procedures. Additionally, the pumps are accompanied by all the requisite accessories, ensuring seamless operation at customer sites.
“Our pumps consistently deliver optimal performance, even under challenging conditions such as high temperature, humidity, and remote locations, without any reported failures or customer com-plaints. Feedback from clients indicates that KCP pumping speed is among the industry’s best.”
Meeting Market Demands
The UAE construction market presents significant growth opportunities, driven by ambitious projects and government initiatives like the “We the UAE 2031” vision. This vision aims to double the country’s GDP by 2031, necessitating substantial investments in infrastructure and renewable energy.
With the UAE construction outlook looking positive, KCP and Gargash are well-positioned to meet new demands, particularly in the ready-mix concrete sector, which supplies concrete to all construction sites.
The company is working side by side with all ready-mix companies across the UAE to offer the right solutions to their projects and requirements, explains Darras.
“Over the past year, we have been actively engaging with potential customers in the UAE ready mix market. The market potential for KCP, backed by Gargash, continues to grow due to our diverse range of solutions and exceptional aftersales support, which instills confidence in our products and services among customers. We are optimistic that KCP will consistently capture a larger market share in the years to come,” he enthuses.
Dwelling on the approach to aftersales, he says, a key aspect of the KCP-Gargash partnership will continue to be the comprehensive support offered to customers. This includes technical knowledge provision, personalised consultations, product demonstrations, emergency service and maintenance support, and educational programmes.
“Our goal is to provide professional and systematic support to our customers, ensuring their heavy equipment operates smoothly,” Darras emphasises. “Our organisation offers round-the-clock 24/7 assistance to our esteemed clientele, delivered by highly skilled
and accredited technicians and engineers. This support is provided both on-site (field service) and at our central workshop conveniently located in the heart of Dubai.”
The collaboration extends to offering various sales channels, including leasing and financing options, to help buyers secure the necessary funding for purchasing concrete pumps. The majority of KCP pumps in the UAE market are mounted on Mercedes-Benz trucks, and Gargash’s dealerships for both KCP and Mercedes-Benz ensure excellent service for both the truck and the pump.
“Our pumps are exclusively mounted on
Mercedes-Benz trucks, ensuring the highest quality and reliability,” he says. “Both the chassis and structure are meticulously manufactured and certified in strict accordance with the GCC stringent specifications and standards.”
KCP and Gargash are committed to delivering high-quality products and services that meet the stringent GCC specifications and standards. The companies’ focus on simplicity, lightweight design, and structural stability makes KCP concrete pumps a preferred choice in the UAE market. “KCP concrete pumps are competitive in three ways: simplicity, light weight, and stability,” Darras noted.
The future looks promising for KCP and Gargash as they continue to capture a larger market share and provide unparalleled customer support in the UAE. Their partnership is set to drive innovation and growth in the region’s construction industry, contributing to the success of UAE contractors by providing them with their cutting edge pumps and support whenever and wherever they are needed.
Darras concludes: “KCP’s factory maintains a state of readiness to ensure prompt order fulfillment and rapid pump production throughout the year. And we maintain adequate inventories of essential raw materials, assembly components, and a steady supply of Mercedes-Benz chassis. Our industry-leading lead time of approximately eight weeks from the date of order underscores our commitment to operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.”

A BUMPY RIDE
CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM ON THE MARKET ABOUNDS AS
VOLVO CE PRESENTS ITS FRESH NEW LINE-UP OF MACHINES FOR REGULATED AND LESS REGULATED MARKETS
The CEO of Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) told CMME and the world’s press at the Volvo Days event earlier this summer that the firm expects the demand for electric machinery to accelerate in coming years, even if the market has proved to be more sluggish than anticipated.
“Electrification is a bumpy ride and it’s not moving as quickly as we anticipated. We are sure that in a couple of years that will change. I think we will be forced to react quickly. So we are investing to be ready for change,” said Volvo CE CEO Melker Jernberg.
Speaking during the press conference held alongside the Volvo Days events, he also suggested Volvo CE is hedging its bets and not overstretching itself by investing in upgrading rather than replacing its manufacturing footprint. The company is clearly concerned at the pace of electrification in the industry.
“We are investing also in partnerships and cooperations. It would be too costly to do it by ourselves. We continue to heavily invest in conventional products,” he said.
“This is our most ambitious New Product Line-Up yet,” added Jernberg, as he introduced the global media back to Eskilstuna. The company returned its global HQ operations back to the Swedish town where Volvo was orginally founded in 1832 last year.
“We are coming through a strong period (after 2023). This is a reassurance to us that we can invest in the future,” he
commented, noting that in 2024 there is a ‘strange political situation’ affecting its customers in global territories.
“The world is changing and we are too, we are seeing closing borders, we have elections globally, we have more military spending.” He also notes the difficulties caused by the US imposing high tariffs on Chinese EV tech. One angle of the situation is normalising in the global supply chain,” said Jernbeg.
“We are moving into slow economic growth but in construction machinery we are used to a cyclical business.
New Electric Wheel Loader tested in the UAE
During the press conference, Volvo CE explained that it is “going to the next level” with three new electric products, the L90 wheel loader, EWR150 wheeled excavator and L120 wheel loader, a machine that has been tested in the UAE prior to launch.
“There has been positive feedback on noise and performance,” the media were told.
Despite its machinery development, in 2023, Volvo CE sold 898 just electric machines representing representing 1.5% of overall annual sales that exceeded 60,000. Melker Jernberg said it wants that figure to reach 30% within the decade: “We will see a crunch in a couple of years and then it will accelerate.”
Of its new generation of Articulated Haulers, Jernberg added: “We are extra proud. Our team have done magic.”
Noticeable from Volvo CE’s biggest ever launch was a strict focus on conventional and electric machines with few announcements made on its development of new hydrogen machines.
However, Jernberg confirmed that Volvo is still working on Hydrogen Fuel Cell tech with partner Daimler.
“We know fuel cells have been on the table for years. But if you have excess of energy it’s a good way to store it. I think we will see some products but not until 2030. We are also testing running hydrogen in combustion engines.”
Taking place in Eskilstuna, Sweden, Volvo Days was the first major showcase since the company announced the site as its new corporate headquarters in August last year.
At the flagship event, customers got an inside look at Volvo CE’s very latest launches and innovations across both electric and conventional solutions, as well as its range of digital tools – and met the people making it happen.
Melker Jernberg, Head of Volvo CE, said: “In this time of rapid change, the global community needs the construction industry to step up and meet societal challenges with safer, smarter, and more sustainable solutions. That is why we at Volvo CE are taking a leading role in driving this transformation,
investing and partnering across the entire value chain to push boundaries in the right direction. At Volvo Days, we displayed our most ambitious response yet to those challenges, working together with customers to move our industry forward.”
One of the most significant changes in this year’s Volvo Days was a shift away from silo-ed products and services towards total solutions – tailored to customer needs, no matter where they were on their decarbonisation journey, so that they could take on new challenges and opportunities with the support they needed.
Another new focus was on construction segments, allowing customers to see how Volvo solutions could be holistically packaged to deliver the highest possible performance across their specific applications, from Building and Utilities to Quarries and Aggregates.

“These new ranges prove that Volvo CE is well-equipped to respond to the different needs of our customers”
Joakim Arndorw, Head of Sales Region International, said: “These new ranges, alongside our electric solutions, prove that Volvo CE is well-equipped to respond to the different needs of our customers in both regulated and less regulated markets, leveraging our strength to implement meaningful innovation across all our offerings as we move closer towards our
ambition for net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.”
On top of a modernisation of its conventional offerings, Volvo CE again delivered on its pledge to lead the industry transition towards fossil-fuel-free construction with several exciting electric introductions in the mid-size segment.
Alongside already launched electric solutions such as the 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator and cable-connected EW240 Electric MH, the company presented an array of new battery electric equipment.
These included the EWR150 Electric, the first of Volvo’s electric wheeled excavators, and the L90 Electric and L120 Electric wheel loaders, scheduled for stepwise introductions from late 2024 in limited volumes across selected markets. They were supported by its broadest range of charging solutions yet with the launch of the PU40 mobile power unit for compact equipment, available across select markets, and a welcome addition to the already available PU500 mobile power unit. Also demonstrating Volvo CE’s
dedication to securing a reliable electric ecosystem was the new My Equipment digital app, to help customers manage the charging process more efficiently.
The event also highlighted the strength of the Volvo Group, with a few collaborations designed to accelerate innovation and aid industry transformation. For example, Volvo Financial Services showcased how it was customising financial offerings to meet the specific needs of its customers, while Volvo Trucks demonstrated its impressive electric portfolio.

PROVING CAPABILITY
JOHNSON ARABIA STEPS UP TO THE PLATE WITH A LIFTING
OPERATION TO HELP THE RAMHAN ISLAND DEVELOPMENT
GET OFF THE GROUND IN ABU DHABI
In the fast-paced world of UAE’s real estate market, luxury residential developments are constantly on the rise. Ramhan Island, located off the coast of Abu Dhabi, is one such project featuring multiple sea-front luxury villas, hotels, and retail spaces. Johnson Arabia has been a trusted partner for various developers on this ambitious project, recently executing a crucial 43-tonne lift for girder beams as part of the temporary bridge construction between Abu Dhabi City and Ramhan Island.
The crane rental powerhouse was appointed to lift the girder beams, each weighing 43 tonnes, for the temporary bridge. This complex task required the type of precision and expertise which Johnson Arabia is renowned for in the sector. The task facing the team at Johnson Arabia was to ensure seamless connectivity for the ongoing development, scheduled meticulously to align with the project timelines.
Johnson Arabia was chosen for this project due to its diligent and professional services, commitment to excellence, and deep understanding of the task’s criticality. The company’s track record in delivering exceptional service made it the ideal choice for ensuring the project’s success.
Given the size of the loads to be lifted and the complexity of the wider project, safety was a paramount concern. Early into the works, Johnson Arabia conducted a thorough site survey to identify and mitigate potential risks. Working on the lift subcontractor’s advice and following a plate load test, the on-site contractors were required backfilling with 100% compaction to ensure the ground was sufficiently compacted.
Wooden mats were additionally used to distribute the load of the tracks, further shoring up any remaining safety concerns. The project utilised a nearly 600-tonne crawler crane, specifically the Terex Demag CC 2800,
equipped with a 72m main boom and 160t SSL. This enormous crane was chosen for its substantial lifting capacity and suitability for the project’s demands.
Following the site survey, the team recommended reducing the crane size for the mobilisation to a 350 tonnes CC220 Terex Demag to optimise costs. They also adjusted the main boom length to 108m, enabling efficient reach to the secondary location from the initial crane position. This strate-gic modification ensured all lifting operations were completed on schedule with minimal delays due to crane adjustments.
The client expressed their gratitude for the smooth execution of the lifting operations. Both the client and consultant were pleased with Johnson Arabia’s performance, highlighting the team’s efficiency and professionalism.
Reflecting on the project’s success, a spokesperson from Johnson Arabia stated, “This project’s success is a testament to the great work by Johnson Arabia. Our team’s expertise and dedication ensured we met all safety and efficiency targets, delivering outstanding results for our client.”
Crawler cranes, like the Terex Demag CC 2200 used in this project, are pivotal in construction due to their high lifting capacities and versatility. These cranes can move with loads, providing flexibility in construction sites with limited space. Their tracks distribute weight evenly, allowing them to operate on softer grounds where wheeled cranes might struggle. Crawler cranes are essential for large-scale construction projects, offering unmatched stability and lifting power.
“As the UAE continues to develop its luxury real estate sector, Johnson Arabia’s role in projects like Ramhan Island’s bridge construction highlights the company’s critical contribution to the industry. Our ability to deliver complex lifting solutions safely and efficiently ensures that we remain a preferred partner in the region’s ambitious construction endeavours,” said Sreethu T, Engineering Manager for Johnson Arabia.

CANVAS UNLEASHES NEW ROBOT DRYWALLERS
WHY GET IT?
ALL WHEEL STEERING MAKES IT A BREEZE TO POSITION AND MANOEUVRE IN TIGHT SPACES. REDUCES 70% OF REPETITIVE MOTIONS
Canvas has released its new product, the 1200CX, the latest in its range of robotic drywall finishers.
Years of development and customer feedback have resulted in a compact, lightweight, and easily maneuverable machine that is highly versatile across project portfolios and enables customers with smaller spaces such as multi-family and tower construction projects to leverage Canvas machines, said the US firm.
“We have worked closely with our customers to build a revolutionary new platform,” said Kevin Al-bert, cofounder and CEO of Canvas. “The 1200CX addresses our customers’ needs by bringing them a system that can get into all of the corners of their buildings while improving productivity.”
Canvas is known for producing the world’s first drywall finishing robot. Designed to be operated by workers, the Canvas system uses robotic precision to
spray-apply all of the joint compound onto the wall in a single step, reducing the time required to finish a wall from five days, in a traditional manual process, to just two days with one day for mud application and one day for sanding.
After a single drying cycle, an interchangeable sanding head is swapped onto the machine to sand the wall down while the vacuum system captures 99.9% of the dust. This novel process gives contractors more control over their schedule while making finishing more efficient.
The 1200CX supplements the existing 1550 model which at 15.5’ finishing height is attuned to taller, more open spaces. With this new platform, the Canvas fleet is now equipped to handle a broad range of building types including: Multifamily Residential, Hospitality, Hospital, Datacenter, Airport, Manufacturing, Warehouse, Education, Municipal, and Office. Over-the-air (OTA) updates, Canvas systems become more productive and gain increased feature capabilities with each new software upgrade.

A RECORD SALE
EURO AUCTIONS OPENS ITS GULF HQ WITH A RECORD
BREAKING EQUIPMENT AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES SALE
Euro Auctions is continuing to go from strength to strength with the official opening of its new corporate HQ sale site in Abu Dhabi. With the hammer total doubling the revenue over the same sale in June 2023 and increasing the number of vendors by 95%, the number of consignors doubling, increasing the number of first-time registered bidders for a Euro Auctions sale in the UAE, and increasing vendor countries by 300%. With the appetite to be the number one auction facility in the Middle East this sale indicates that Euro Auctions is firmly on that trajectory.
With nearly five hundred lots for sale, the average lot price was double that of the same sale in June 2023, indicating that through the Abu Dhabi auction, Euro Auctions is selling more big-ticket items than in the previous 12 months.
This Euro Auctions sale attracted vendors from across the Gulf, India, China, Africa and East Asia, and while online buying is strong at all Euro Auctions sales, it is still the preference of Middle East buyers to attend live sales and bid in person on the day, with 47% of buyers transacting bidding online. First time registrations to buy with Euro Auctions increased by 20%.
According to the auction house, the top buying countries at the June sale were: UAE, UK, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Norway, Nigeria,
Morocco, Kenya and Jordan.
Unsurprisingy the top buying region was the Middle East at 82%, but, as the country list suggested, the auction is also attracting an international line-up of buyers with Africa (6%), UK (5%), Asia (3.6%), Europe (2.25%) and North America (1%) all participating.
Richard Sweatt, General Manager for Euro Auctions Middle East and Asia comments.
“We welcomed the world to our new Gulf HQ in Abu Dhabi and this resulted in a record sale. This new site in the Khalifa Economic Zone is pivotal to our expansion in EMEA and East Asia and we plan to host 4 to 6 live sales per year on this site. Specialising in the sale of high value construction machinery and commercial vehicles,
our new facility in Abu Dhabi provides us with the opportunity and the appetite to further develop within the region.”
“This was a record sale for Euro Auctions in Abu Dhabi and in all statistics we saw substantial growth,” he said.
“The sales total was a 12-month high, with a 20% increase in the number registering, with bidders from Scandinavia to the Far East including the Gulf, East, West and North Africa, every country in central and eastern Europe, the USA, Canada and Australasia.
“Euro Auctions does have extraordinary global reach and once a seller or buyer trades with us, there is a loyalty and this is a real testimony to the like and faith that buyers have in the Euro Auctions brand.
“The value of individual lots is increasing at each sale, selling higher value, quality units, and we are attracting many new consignors as our customers see the benefits of selling with us.
“We are also seeing good consignments coming from outside of the UAE to meet the demand for fresh and low hours
machines that buyers in the Gulf want.”
According to Sweatt Euro Auctions strength is in its network of sale sites and our teams of sales managers who are globally connected.
“We attract good consignors and vendors because of our ability to sell to a large global audience, with over 250,000 unique clients and selling into over 100 countries, we are able to attract a very serious buying audience.”
Sweatt continued: “In the Gulf, in the last 6 months, we have seen an increase in the number of vendors using Euro Auctions who have never previously sold at auction, coming to us for the first time. So, this is a real testimony to the trust that sellers put in us to achieve the best price possible and Euro Auctions always achieves true market value for the sellers machinery.”
“We want sellers to sell with us, and we want buyers to buy from us because, not only do we offer some of the most competitive rates of commission in our sector, but we have one of the best facilities thus attracting the best machines and the best inventory for our buyers.”
As they continue to expand globally, Euro Auctions is set to remain a leader in the industrial auction industry, delivering high-value equipment to a worldwide market.
“Euro Auctions continues to expand globally with the acquisition of the Michener Allen group in Canada, Euro Auctions now spans four continents, with auction sites in 8 countries, operating 12 sites and selling over 150,000 lots each year,” noted Sweatt.
43,000
The new Khalifa Economic Zone site covers more than 43,000 square metres
The Abu Dhabi site is now expected to continue to attract vendors from across the Gulf, India, China, and East Asia, with the aim of drawing international sellers seeking a global audience.
The opening of Euro Auctions’ newest facility underscores the company’s on-going commitment to providing unparalleled auction services and fostering economic growth in the region.
And despite the strong trend in online buying, it is clear from the June sales that, with Middle East buyers still prefering to attending auctions in person, the new facility has been perfectly designed to meet this demand.
BAUER AND DEWA WORK ON NEW CRITICAL RESERVOIR PROJECT
he Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is currently implementing one of the largest future-oriented infrastructure projects in the Emirates. The goal is to store roughly 26 million m3 of water from sea water desalination plants in a natural underground reservoir. This should secure Dubai’s water supply for 90 days in the event of an emergency. To construct the required special wells, GWE GmbH is supplying the screen systems.
period of two years and the results were analyzed in a study. The study showed that the GWE doublewalled screen system is ideally suitable for ASR applications, so the authorities decided to use this well system for the implementation phase of the project.
The preliminary studies for the project began roughly four years ago. In the first phase, the authorities tested various well configurations, such as standard extraction wells, standard monitoring wells and special wells. This last category concerns Artificial Storage and Recovery Wells (ASR), which are used to inject and extract water in the subsoil. The material qualities for ASR wells are subject to particular requirements, since it has to be ensured that both injection and extraction can be carried out without restrictions on the long term and as energy efficient as possible; ultimately, wells have a tendency to become clogged during their lifecycle. GWE’s double-walled screen system was used starting in the first phase as part of the special well tests. The test wells were closely monitored over a
A total of 542 wells with different depths were drilled for the project
A total of 542 wells with different depths were drilled for the project. The ASR wells occupy the largest share with roughly 108 and are also the deepest wells, at a depth of 70m. They form the centerpiece of the project for which GWE is supplying 960 factory-made turnkey PVC double-walled screens with glass bead filling. What makes this system unique is that it comprises an outer screen (diameter 640mm) and an inner screen (470mm). The screens have different slot widths and the interstice is filled with glass beads. They ensure minimal entry resistance. The screen system also features excellent characteristics for regeneration with a variety of methods; guaranteeing long-term operation of the wells. The order for GWE is roughly 3.1mn euros.
“Other countries in the Middle East have already expressed their interest in the system for similarly oriented projects,” reports Markus Hollmann, GWE Managing Director, with enthusiasm. The project in Dubai is planned to conclude in 2025.
