Coming Home As the year comes to a close, signalling the impending arrival of the time when a lot of us in the region take off for our home countries on our vacations, one of the biggest brands in the construction equipment market has also come home. Well, in the UAE at least. Last month, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET) opened a huge new facility at the Dubai Industrial Park dedicated to serving the UAE as the country-wide dealer for Hitachi Construction Machinery and as the Middle East dealer of HSC cranes. A visit to the facility and a talk with the top brass of both MECET and Hitachi proved that the two entities are extremely serious about making up lost ground in the UAE after a period of absence that ended in late 2016 with the two entities partnering up. And now with a multi-million-dollar investment in an advanced premises complete with state-of-the-art facilities for service, parts and back-up support, it looks like the graph for the Japanese giant and it’s local UAE partner can only go up from here on. Another graph we are hoping will go up from now on is the one that shows the industry’s performance. The last heady days of the Middle East’s equipment sector are now a distant memory and the industry is looking for the sun to shine on it again in the year ahead. At CMME, our crystal ball tells us that that that hope may be a bit far fetched in certain sectors while it has the potential to be fulfilled in some others over the next year. With many must-deliver projects in the pipeline in 2019 and 2020, it is a given that some sales will happen. But with a better-safe-than-sorry mentality, the region’s contractors are more
likely to plumb for rental and used rather than outright purchase of new equipment. Expect the heavies to move slowly and the lighter stuff to move faster in the year ahead – if The Big 5 Heavy was any indication of the trends to expect going forward. As our report tells you, there weren’t many big names at the show this time in its second coming this year, but innovative small players still vied for the spotlight. Small and spotlight are also apt words that describe our concluding feature on attachments. These are the vital and invaluable tools that make any piece of machinery practical and versatile. And with manufacturers coming up with some wonderfully innovative products – such as grader and wheel saw attachments – there is scarcely a limit now to what one machine with the ability to support several tools can accomplish for you. It has been an eventful 12 months of bringing you insights into the local and even the global equipment industry. We thank you for your support and look forward to continuing to be your industry knowledge curator next year after you come back from your well-earned vacations to a fresh issue of CMME, the home of the industry. See you in the New Year!

Haulotte supports IPAF convention The 4th IPAF Middle East Convention, which was held last month in the UAE at the Meydan racecourse in Dubai, saw longtime IPAF partner support and participate in the event side-by-side with the organisers. According to Haulotte, this is a part of its strong support for the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) as a prominent supporter of the industry body since December 2010, when the IPAF started its operations in Middle East. The IPAF promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide in the widest sense – through providing technical advice and information; through influencing and interpreting legislation and standards; and through safety initiatives and training programmes. “Working at height remains one of the biggest causes of fatalities and major injuries. It’s a common requirement for
many jobs and occupations, especially in the construction sector in the UAE and GCC region where construction is taking place at such a rapid rate,” said Arthur Danelian, MD, Haulotte Middle East. Subjects covered in the convention included safety at height, how to prevent falls using the right type of equipment, local legislation, analysis of GCC markets, actions to be taken before crises, market trends, new technologies for training users and new technologies for rental companies. Haulotte Middle East welcomed customers and visitors to its stand and shared its safety expertise and details on new projects in the region. Haulotte also exhibited its latest products, equipped with accessories like Haulotte Activ’ShieldBar. Haulotte’s diesel articulating boom HA26 RTJ PRO, vertical mast STAR 10 and electric scissor lift OPTIMUM 8AC were also on the booth.

JLG launches Skyguard Skyline in EMEA region
Global powered access and telehandler major JLG has released its SkyGuardSkyLine enhanced control panel protection system as the new standard for boom lifts in Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and Russia. The new safety innovation is the result of customer feedback stemming from the release of SkyGuard in 2012, said the Oshkosh
Corporation company, adding that the system features a slim wire rope design that is bolted to the left side an aerial work platform with an opposing magnetic connection. If the operator contacts the cable, and the magnet detaches, the system stops all boom lift functions, then momentarily reverses or undoes most functions that were in use when the
system was activated. This reverse functionality was pioneered by JLG in 2012. “This enhanced safety feature is another step forward for JLG as we continue to innovate to meet the changing needs of the access industry needs,” said Jan-Willem van Wier, senior product marketing manager for JLG in EMEA. “The customer and end-user feedback on the original SkyGuard system was very positive, and this new feature is a natural evolution of the technology.” Starting last month through to early 2019, the SkyGuard SkyLine system will be phased into most boom lift models as a standard feature. Customers also have the option to purchase the original bar style SkyGuard system.

EAD targets cleaner asphalt production
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the largest environmental regulator in the GCC region, has extended its Eltezam compliance campaign to target the damaging effects of asphalt production in Abu Dhabi emirate. Eltezam (meaning compliance in English)
is ensuring adherence to environmental laws as part of a continued focus on industrial manufacturing. The asphalt industry represents the fourth phase of the campaign, with prior attention centring on the ready-mix concrete, fiberglass and metal coating sectors. Asphalt is a high-viscosity
black oil substance extracted through the process of crude oil distillation, which is the main material used in paving roads and runways. The manufacturing of asphalt includes the storing, drying and mixing of raw materials that can emit dust and other fine particles, potentially also

The Eltezam Campaign aims to prevent or reduce the negative impact of urbanisation on the environment, by ensuring compliance to local environmental laws, international standards and best practice. EAD will carry out routine inspections to determine facility compliance. Ahmed Al Waheebi, unit head, Environmental Compliance and Audit, Environment Quality Sector at EAD, said: “With a renewed emphasis on safer asphalt manufacturing processes, we hope to raise greater awareness and reduce any related adverse environmental effects.”

Atlas Copco has expanded its range of air compressors for utility trucks with the launch of three models weighing below 500kg. As a result, operators requiring compressed air at flow rates of up to 2.8m3/min are able to reduce the overall weight of their vehicles and save space due to the small footprint of the compressors. At the forefront of the new additions to the 8 Series Utility range is the U110 PACE compressor, which features an innovative controller allowing for multiple pressure configurations between 5-10.5 bar.
Hendrik Timmermans, VP, Marketing for Atlas Copco’s Portable Air division, said: “We launched our 8 Series Utility range last year with the promise of providing customers with lightweight and versatile compressors that could be easily and securely integrated into their utility trucks. We have now taken that commitment one-step further with the introduction of our three latest models. Not only do they weigh below 500 kg, but all compressors in the Utility Air range now offer enhanced industryleading service intervals.”

Sharjah port orders new Demag AT crane
The Sharjah Seaports Authority (SSA), operator of the UAE’s Sharjah port, has commissioned a brand new Demag AC 100-4L all-terrain crane. The purchase was made through the authorised Terex Cranes distributor Al-Bahar, which is also headquartered in Sharjah and is one of the most successful authorised distributors and service providers for large machines and equipment in the entire Middle East. Ahmed Bin Ahmed, marine
engineer and head of Plant, SSA, said: “We have chosen the Demag AC 1004L because of the excellent reputation of this brand, which, with the Madein-Germany seal, stands for high quality around the world.” He added that the excellent service provided by Terex Cranes and Al-Bahar were further reasons for his company’s decision to buy the Demag AC 100-4L. The operation site of the new crane will be Sharjah’s Port Khalid, one of three deep-water seaports managed by the authority, with the others being Khorfakkan and Hamriyah. With a total of 33 berths, the ports are capable of handling ships of all sizes and goods. Around 6,500 ships dock in the three ports each year, loading and unloading over 10mt of bulk goods and more than 2.5 million 20-foot containers.

Italy emerges on top at Case’s annual international operator competition
The best construction machine operators from all over Europe met at the Case Customer Centre in Paris recently for the annual Case Rodeo Final. Teams from 10 countries battled through fiercely competitive national competitions to make it to the international final. In four Wild
West themed games, operators used a range of Case equipment to demonstrate agility, speed and technical skill. The games are designed to push operators to the limit as they demonstrate the versatility, power and flexibility of each Case machine. Each game was designed for a specific Case model and
operators raced against the clock, being careful not to incur time penalties for errors. This year, Case‘s TV380 Compact Track Loader took centre-stage in the Lawless Loader game. Competitors were reminded of the Football World Cup as they picked up a ball balanced on a cone and raced to score
a goal. Francesco Novelli from Italy showed perfect ball skills and won this event with a time of 1:51 minutes. Keeping to the sports theme, Little Bighorn was the next challenge. Operators showed their skill with the Case 695 ST Backhoe Loader, racing to collect five balls across a court to score as many baskets as possible. Again, Italy’s Francesco Novelli came first with a score of 5 baskets in just 2:23 minutes. In the evening, competitors enjoyed a gala dinner at the Hippodrome Racecourse in the picturesque town of Chantilly, near Paris. Prizes were awarded to the individual winners and Italy emerged the team of the year, with Denmark in second place.

Terex TowerS in Belgian crane BalleT S ix flat-top tower cranes from Terex are orchestrating a series of carefully choreographed overlapping operations in the Belgian town of Turnhout, in a project to build multiple apartment buildings and a museum. Dutch crane rental company Stravers Torenkranen BV used the six Terex flat-tops on behalf of construction company Interbuild NV at the job-site in Belgium’s Turnova district. The crane squad consisted of two Terex CTT 332-16 units and four Terex CTT 231-10 units, with the tallest set up with a freestanding height of 92m. Explaining the job, Berry Stravers, owner and GM of Stravers Tornkranen, said: “There were two reasons why we decided to only use Terex cranes for this worksite. Firstly, they had the required lifting capacities. Secondly, it was remarkably easy to position them in an overlapping arrangement on the available space.” Moreover, it was not particularly difficult for the company to ‘recruit’ suitable Terex tower cranes for the project, seeing that of the 130 cranes in the Stravers fleet, 120 are Terex tower cranes. The Stravers location in the Dutch town of Veghel used 72 trucks to bring the six chosen
cranes to Turnhout, where erecting them took a four-person team a full day each. The cranes will remain there for about a year and a half and will be used to lift prefab components, other building materials and an endless number of concrete buckets. “Our cranes will be operating continuously, as there’s no concrete pump at the work-site. This means that they need to do their job with perfect reliability – and that’s exactly what they’ll do,” said Stravers, calling upon the experience of having executed similar jobs with Terex tower cranes in the past. This is why he’s not particularly worried about the extremely ambitious schedule at the site – especially since he knows, as a longtime Terex Cranes partner, that he can depend on the manufacturer’s support at any time in the unlikely event that it is needed. “We trust in Terex Cranes because it’s been a reliable partner for the last 15 years. They have a good stock of spare parts, along with quick delivery of those parts, and the products they make are of good quality.” He should know. Not only does Stravers Torenkranen have a big fleet of Terex tower cranes, it has also been an official Terex tower crane dealer for all of the Netherlands since 2003.

They forge the way to overcoming natural barriers and satisfying social needs. This is how they become a nation’s principal transport infrastructure. The road network connecting a region is a key factor in determining its competitiveness, the strength of its economy and even its social development. Throughout history, Acciona has participated in this effort alongside governments and other stakeholders, to put its long experience and deep knowledge into practice on several hundred projects that today form part of the highway infrastructure of many countries across the world. In the past decade alone, the company has built over 1,700km of roads in projects numbering in the hundreds. It has also carried out the construction, maintenance and management of all kinds of highways, motorways and roads across the world, applying the most innovative and sustainable construction solutions in all of them to maximise their usefulness and minimise environmental impact. Thanks to the effort of its professionals, Acciona has introduced new working methods in all its projects which have given rise to more sustainable processes, in both economic and environmental terms. In the construction sector, a huge source of competitive advantage is process improvement, which gives rise to innovation, quality, improved performance and cost reduction, among other benefits. The excavation process during the execution of any infrastructure project is one of the biggest energy consumers and the correct guidance is vital in excavation jobs, especially when it comes to tunneling. This is Acciona’s domain. The technological evolution of tunneling machines has contributed greatly to the expansion of land transport worldwide, and Acciona’s expertise in the construction of roads, railway lines and suburban train networks has made it a leader in building every kind of tunnel. One of the crucial factors when working with tunneling machines is choosing or adapting the right one for each lay of the land. Selecting the appropriate equipment for each project is among the things that make Acciona a world leader in this sector. The various types of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) the company works with are open-type main beams, single shield, double shield, earth pressure balance, hydro shield and so on – with its engineers and technicians able to adapt them to any eventuality a project presents. These machines are colossal in size, worthy of admiration. They reach up to 100m in length, typically with excavation diameters of 18m, and can weigh 2,800t. That is, they can be as long as nine buses, as high as a five-storey building and as heavy as 15 Boeing 747s. Watching these huge cylinders open up the earth, boring through over 1km of rock a month, is a unique spectacle. No less astonishing is how they leave behind them a structure of perfectly assembled segments that hold up the tunnel safely.
A project also needs to take the environment into account, so it is necessary to take additional measures in order to avoid things such as acoustic contamination or carbon emissions. To deal with this problem, Acciona uses an ‘acoustic ship’ to reduce the noise generated during excavation work. It solves the emissions issue by placing a material evacuation belt up to a kilometre long, which cuts more than 180,000 dump truck trips to a nearby quarry. The result? Reduction of more than 1,000t of carbon dioxide emissions, a drastic lowering of the acoustic contamination in the area, and reduced pollution and dust impact on the local vegetation. Digital transformation is playing a massive role in the construction sector. The Davos forum has calculated $114bn as the combined value for digitisation of the sector from here to 2025. Reliable studies tell us that in recent decades, many industries have boosted their productivity above 150% and construction is starting to share this trend through digital applications that are enabling unprecedented levels of efficiency. The studies also suggest that companies that digitise get 8% more income and are 20% more profitable than those that do not. The increase in the use of technology also has a direct consequence in safety improvement, and in reduction of human error and accident risk. For all these reasons, the training of future professionals must be immediately oriented towards this new paradigm. Acciona is developing several pilot digitization projects which are currently being applied in large projects around the world. These include augmented reality; solutions to develop pavements adapted to new challenges and achieving efficient, smarter and safer mobility while maintaining sustainability; and the use of eco-friendly materials for a new concept of asphalt pavements. We are also living in an exciting time of increasingly accessible technologies that allow us to develop vehicles and manage fleets that are increasingly intelligent, flexible and adaptive to the environment, such as automated guided vehicles (AGV). Caterpillar is the world’s largest manufacturer of construction machinery and its forecast of greater growth is precisely in automation. Only three companies in the sector around the world have approached them to implement this technology, and Acciona is one of them. In the near future, drivers will comfortably operate fleets from an office through AI and network infrastructure. In the construction field, the need to standardise different types of vehicles and their connectivity will make each project a small smart city where all the teams collaborate, move, communicate and act under the same standards of communication and supervision. It is a fact that we are witnessing an exciting time of increasingly accessible technologies where the construction sector cannot stay behind. That is why this new era is seen as a new opportunity based on regulation, technology and talent. We are immersed in the fourth industrial revolution and, like the previous ones, it generates fear of the unknown and panic about the unprecedented. However, we have to approach it from a positive vision of opportunity, adapting to developments. Only then will we be able to make the most of its advantages.

Scania’S next generation SwediSh truck giant introduceS itS new ntg range in the uae, with three Xt verSionS deSigned for conStruction applicationS
W
hether in the transport or logistics arena in the Middle East, or in the field of construction, Scania is one of the bestknown and most respected names when it comes to trucks in the region. And now the Swedish giant has launched its latest products in the region, bringing in its new truck generation, which it showed off last month in Dubai. Keeping the importance of the Middle East market in mind, Scania has brought in the full range of its next-generation trucks for long-haul, urban and construction (XT) applications. According to the company, the XT in the new construction trucks stands for “eXtra Toughness”, appropriate for a region with extreme conditions such as the Middle East. Scania says its new truck generation focuses
on customer profitability by providing customised transportation solutions for an even better total operating economy. Announcing the launch of its new and complete truck range in the UAE, the company said the new truck generation is extending its offering “and can now, with its unique modular system, supply more performance steps, connectivity and a comprehensive palette of productivityenhancing services, as well as customised transportation solutions”. “The promise is that Scania’s customers will always be able to carry out their work in the most sustainable and profitable way, regardless of industry and area of application,” said the company. With the complete new truck range, Scania says it is setting a new standard for what is premium in the transport industry. The result of 10 years of development work and investment of over $2.2bn, the new truck generation builds on the values, strategies and innovations which for the past 127 years have made Scania an industry leader. The enhanced new truck range further improves
Scania’s already strong fuel performance, due to factors such as improved powertrains and better aerodynamics. Another notable feature is the availability and offering of 24 different cab models. With driver safety at the forefront of Scania’s goals, the new truck range also provides the world’s first rollover side curtain airbag. Speaking on the launch of the new range in the UAE, Özcan Barmoro, MD, Scania Middle East, said: “Scania’s new truck generation aims to drive the evolution of the transportation industry in line with the ambitions of the UAE National Agenda 2021. Inspired by our core value of putting customers first, global trends and challenges, this generation of trucks is designed to better meet the needs of our customers and the world we live in. It has efficiency in both fuel economy and performance incorporated into a design inspired by the Scania heritage. Our new truck range will contribute to the ambitions of the UAE to become a sustainable nation powered by smart technology solutions.” Thani Al Shirawi, CEO of Al Shirawi, distributor for
17 Scania in Dubai and the UAE’s Northern Emirates, added: “Scania’s trucks are popular [in the UAE] due to their robustness and reliability, as well as the sales and after-sales service support extended 24x7 by Al Shirawi’s highly competent factory-trained team. It enables customers to experience the value of the advanced design and quality which is built ‘for the only business that matters, yours’. With the arrival of the new truck generation, Scania offers tailormade, better solutions than ever before, which is a result of a deeper understanding of our customers’ businesses. We welcome the new range of Scania trucks and are anticipating a strongly positive response from our customers.” Moeen Bin Brook, CEO of Bin Brook Motors & Equipment LLC, distributor for Scania in Abu Dhabi, said: “Scania products are designed for different customer applications, with the total operating economy in mind. For us in the region, especially with the new Scania XT, Scania’s focus on tailormade solutions for each application will increase uptime and the earning capacity of the construction
segment, which has to cope with tough challenges.” Scania has been at the forefront of the region’s transport sector for more than four decades, providing outstanding fuel-efficient and optimised vehicles, fully customised and adapted to the requirements and operating conditions of the Middle East. Of particular interest to the construction sector is the XT chassis in Scania’s new NTG line-up, used in the vehicles for the mixer, tipper and long chassis applications. The mixer offering – the G380 B8x4HZ – is an 8X4 chassis supporting a GVW of 50t. It has a 13l, six-cylinder engine developing 380hp of maximum power and 1,975Nm of peak torque in the 1,000-1,300rpm range. Shifting is done via a 12-speed range gearbox, which also includes two crawler gears and two reverse ones. Technological aids such as traction control, hill-hold and hill-start come standard. The tipper and long chassis, meanwhile, are both 6X4 affairs with GVWs of 41t, sharing their engines and transmissions with the mixer version. According to Scania, the new XT long chassis is
designed and optimised to suit the operational conditions in the Middle East region, with proven robustness, performance and uptime. “Equipped with Scania manufactured driveline components, customers are assured that this vehicle will be working to deliver outstanding performance. Its strong frame and extra duty cross member ensures increased strength for the truck,” says the manufacturer. The rigid chassis is multifunctional and can be mounted with various superstructure options, such as tippers, water tankers, cranes, cargo boxes, skip loaders, refuse compactors, and vacuum/sewer tankers, making it suitable for the tough demands of the Gulf region. One of the improvements is in the visibility sphere, with the front axle moved 50mm forward for added manoeuvrability in tight corners, especially for urban operations. The added XT package provides the robustness of an all-terrain vehicle, making the new Scania construction and heavy range an apt choice for the needs of the construction sector in the Middle East.

Over 2,500 global exhibiting companies and more than 30 official country pavilions displayed the latest building solutions and innovative products at the event. The broad international participation, which is expected to cater to the needs of the regional construction industry, demonstrates a growing interest in the expanding GCC market. According to The Big 5’s intelligence partner, BNC Network, over 23,000 construction projects are currently active in the GCC, and worth more than $2.3tr.
19 Companies such as Spider Plus (bottom) found The Big 5 Heavy an apt platform to showcase their innovative machinery to a stream of visitors.
On its opening day, The Big 5 2018 introduced two new features that aim to advance the construction sector by embracing innovation and technology: the brand new Live Innovation Zone, hosting a selection of the most innovative products that are shaking up the construction industry today, and The Big 5’s Start-Up City, presenting the next construction tech disruptors. The event also hosted the first FutureTech Construction Summit themed “Empowering Innovation in the Construction Ecosystem”. Speakers from Virgin Hyperloop One, Microsoft, Saudi Aramco, Faithful+Gould, ASGC, AECOM, Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, Meraas and Mont Hill presented some of the latest and most promising technologies, which will help the construction industry achieve higher productivity, greater sustainability and enhanced affordability. Addressing the audience at the Futuretech Construction Summit, Josine Heijmans, Portfolio Director at dmg events, said: “In a world where innovation and technology are more and more crucial to remain competitive, the construction sector is still widely considered a late technology adopter. Yet, technology has an enormous potential within the sector. “From Robotics and Artificial Intelligence to 3D Printing, from Virtual Reality to smart building and IT solutions, a variety of tech innovations have the power to shake up the construction industry today, to improve its productivity, and increase its sustainability and affordability. “Innovation and technology are considered key elements also to realizing the UAE Vision 2021. It is therefore of essence for the regional construction sector to embrace innovation and the vast development opportunities offered by technological innovations.” The Big 5 Heavy event, running as part of The Big 5, saw international biggies in the construction machinery industry show off their latest machines and technologies. Prominent among them was Austrian crushing and screening major Hartl Crusher. Speaking with CMME, Hartl CEO, Dominik Hartl, said: “We are at this event with a focus on the market here. The industry is growing, so we see more and more demand in the recycling sector and we can provide a very good and attractive solution for potential customers and that’s why we are here. More than the quantity, it’s the quality of the people - and the quality is still very good. Also, we have sold a machine to Kuwait so our partner/customer from Kuwait joins us here on this exhibition and he is also happy that we are presenting our latest generation of bucket crushers here. “We have various models and sizes depending on the excavator and customer demand. But the HBC 750 is one of the most common sizes because it is the most suitable for the common 18-20t excavators. Among some new names in the field displaying their innovations to the Middle Eats audience were Finnish access equipment maker Janneniska and Spider Plus, a new entrant in the vacuum glass lifting sector. Tomas Salmi, business development manager, Janneniska, said: “We are raising awareness about our products at this event. We will also demo our units in the UAE soon and when people see how effective they are we hope they will catch on. We feel the Big 5 events are some of the best ways to raise awareness of a product like ours.” Meanwhile, Joe Duffy, executive manager at Spider Plus said his company his been in the regional market for a little over two years and this was the first time they were at an exhibition since being set up. “Our stand was received very well. very year there are some developments in the construction and machinery industry that have ramifications beyond what is apparent – and, despite being a relatively calm year as far as activities in the sector are concerned, this year was no exception. Whether it was the emergence of the powered access sector as the leader in the machinery sphere, or the adoption of newer technologies in the way machines are run and operators are trained – or even the way business is sought and done – there were some transformative events in the industry this year as well. Also apparent is how some companies have seized the opportunities presented by a year in which we drew even closer to the hectic completion stage of several key projects in the region, either through entering new areas of business or by simply cementing their position by bringing in new solutions. As 2018 draws to a close, CMME brings you our four picks of the year, encompassing broader market trends and a narrower focus on brands that stood out in a regional context.

The newest entrant into the AWP sector is British giant JCB. Leveraging its brand equity in machines such as the telehandlers, backhoe loaders and the heavy segments, JCB made the announcement to enter the AWP market with nine electric scissor lift models after announcing a new JCB Access division last year. It plans to have 27 models in its line up across the scissor lift, articulated boom and telescopic boom categories, comprising nine electric and three diesel scissor lifts from 4.6m to 13.8m, five articulating booms from 14.9m to 24.6m, and ten 20.6-41.6m diesel telescopic booms. And this year. just a year after entering the sector, JCB notched up an industry first with the launch of a range of electric scissor lifts powered by lithium ion batteries. Is the equipment industry in the Middle East region back? After the heady days of 2015, the region’s appetite and demand for new machinery has seen a continuous ebb, with almost all market players reporting falling sales. While some sectors have been able to buck the trend – such as the rise of the compact and mini excavators last year and the powered access industry this year – on the whole the big and heavy stuff has not seen the highs its sales touched around four years ago. But if the industry’s bellweather is to be believed, then the wheel of time may be turning full circle. Earlier this year - in March, to be precise – the organisers of the Big 5 construction event, which is the largest in the region, siphoned off the machinery section of the show and established it as a
standalone event – the Big 5 Heavy. It was the first time that an exclusive construction machinery exhibition was being held in the Middle East by the Big 5 organisers without allying it with the rest of the construction sector. With 300 exhibitors from over 30 countries the event was the largest construction machinery show in the Middle East and offered construction professionals three days of business, networking, and education. Over 40 complimentary workshops were curated by trusted industry experts such as Omar Essam Barakat from The Chartered Institute of Building, who captured the GCC infrastructure outlook: “If you are actually in the market, you know that with Expo 2020 and Vision 2030, the deadline is just the beginning of a very big plan.” That “big plan” seems big
enough to hold another Big 5 Heavy again this year – this time with the entire Big 5 event. Last month’s show was the first time that a machinery event of such magnitude has been repeated in the same year in the Middle East. Commenting on the success of the show, director for The Big 5 Heavy, Richard Pavitt, says: “We are delighted to see so many market leaders from around the world excited to attend a dedicated show for the heavy machinery and infrastructure industries. The atmosphere was a true reflection of the promise that growing GCC construction opportunities present.” As for the original question as to whether the equipment market in the region is back, the answer could well be a “Maybe”. Only time and the next Big 5 Heavy will tell.

And when we reach Middle East Crane Equipment Trading’s new one-stop shop in Dubai Industrial Park, we realise the magnitude of the facility. Leading us on a tour of his brandspanking-new premises is a justifiably proud Wim Aernouts, director, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET), accompanied by Piet van Bakergem, general manager of Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East. “This facility is a one-stop shop which covers the entire gamut of our operations,” says Aernouts. Those operations cover not only Hitachi construction machinery but also HSC cranes. While MECET is the Hitachi dealer for the UAE, it’s mandate for HSC cranes is a wider one that spans the entire Middle East. “It’s no longer a case of a little here and a little there. Under the roof of this new premises it is onestop shopping for everything Hitachi. So, from parts sales and machine sales to service and engineering, as well as training, this is Hitachi’s new home in the UAE,” Aernouts says. For those who tuned in late to the Hitachi-MECET story that CMME has covered for a while now, MECET is a member of Belgium-based Luyckx Group and the official distributor of Hitachi Construction Machinery in the UAE and HSC Cranes in the Middle East.

COVER STORY DECEMBER 2018
“Under the roof of this new premises it is one-stop shopping for everything Hitachi. So, from parts sales and machine sales to service and engineering, as well as training, this is Hitachi’s new home in the UAE Their new multi-million-dollar facility in Dubai Industrial Park covers 10,000sqm and is MECET’s new base, which used to be in Dubai Investment Park. With a warehouse, workshop, yard and an office building that incorporates training space, the new facility has everything a Hitachi or HSC crane customer would want in a single location, making it a single source of parts, service, support and back-up – or a “one-stop shop” as both Aernouts and Van Bakergem both point out.
MECET’s facility at Dubai Industrial Park, built at an investment of a couple of million dollars over a year, was inaugurated by UAE dignitaries and officials from Hitachi and Luyckx.
“Continuity of operations is assured for our customers with an inventory of spare parts worth a couple of million dollars held at any time in the 1200sqm parts warehouse, which will hold over 3,500 units of the most-required parts,” explains the MECET director.. “We have also allocated around 2,500sqm for our workshop and about 500sqm for the offices. The rest of the area, which is around 60% of the total, will be used for keeping stocks of machines.”
Apart from general repair and maintenance jobs, the workshop is also capable of executing machine refurbishment and overhauling engines as well as having separate sections to work on hydraulic components. Explaining the process further Aernouts adds: “After a customer takes delivery of his machine, he is in the complete care of MECET from there onwards. With our nationwide coverage in every corner of the UAE, this means that even if there is any requirement in a remote quarry in, say the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, we will go to the customer’s job-site with our mobile workshops. “Only in case of something really major, which would be very odd for a Hitachi, would the machine be transported back here. That’s just a hypothetical scenario though, because we have made such advancements in our mobile workshops that we can do shoot around 89% of the troubles we may face onsite.” MECET’s mobile workshop service fleet consists of five Sprinter vans and also a big Mercedes truck equipped with a loading crane at the rear. “This way, we can handle any major heavy component of the machines we sell,” explains Aernouts. Before the new facility was up and running, MECET still used to perform most maintenance jobs onsite using their mobile workshop fleet. But they also used customers’ work premises on occasions. “All that has just moved into this one premises. With our new facility we have
29 gone up several notches in terms of the service that we can offer our customers” the director adds. “In terms of manpower, we have here a large team of highly-professional staff, which is mix of service managers, service engineers, spare parts specialists, logistics experts and sales managers. Our staff strength is more than enough to enable us to meet the needs of our customers from all points of view. This is of course a joint facility for both Hitachi Construction machinery and HSC cranes.” Speaking from Hitachi’s standpoint, Van Bakergem makes his positive reception of the development clear: “MECET’s new facility is a tremendous help for us, because for many years Hitachi was invisible and had no face in the UAE. And now we’ve rolled up our sleeves again and dived into the market. Of course, if you have a professional dealer behind you, with a completely thorough and professional setup like MECET now does, that is the key to success in any market. “This is the ideal facility for us to face the future in the UAE and, of course, in combination with the field support out on the job-site locations, this is the backup from north to south that we require in the country.” And the results are already showing, with some rental companies already buying Hitachi machines in anticipation of upcoming projects in 2019. “They have moved early to be ready for the time when the machines are wanted
and have mitigated any ill effects that may arise due to possible long delivery times of some of the larger machines. Not all the large machines are immediately available at all times, and keeping this in view, one of our customers bought everything we had in stock in the larger Hitachi earth moving machines to be ready for projects coming up in the next few months. In the 60t and above category their fleet is entirely Hitachi,” says Aernouts. Van Bakergem explains further: “What
Wim Aernouts (centre), director of MECET, poses in the yard of his new premises with an official from his company and Piet Van Bakergem (right), GM, Hitachi CM, Middle East.
is significantly different for now over the past is that now that MECET has a yard, they are able to maintain some stock. There’s a very healthy stock of Hitachi machines available for customers, and of course when Middle East customers have an appetite for machines, they want to take delivery of it right away. This is now easier, as we can go to prospective customers and say the fastmoving models are now available. MECET can also anticipate on some of their loyal customers’ requirements by looking into the future together, enabling us to order machines that have longer delivery times, to have them available when these machines are required.” Having a training set-up at the new facility is also great news for the future of the Hitachi-MECET combine, and Aernouts comments: “We will use our training facilities to constantly train and upskill our people, and we will also train our customers. The trainings include classroom sessions delivered by our own training personnel, as well as trainers coming over from Hitachi to train both our staff and customers. Having fully equipped on-site workshops also helps support the classroom training, and we also have advanced teleconferencing facilities in our training areas to link up with experts in the Hitachi family form Japan and other regions worldwide. “The training here will eventually cover the full spectrum, including operator training, technical and service training, as well as sales and other kinds of training.”
ON-SiTE SuppORT
fleeT-fooTed service Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET) has put in place a rigorous programme to provide the service, maintenance and back-up to its customers in the UAE whenever and wherever required. “MECET now offers broad coverage of the UAE and we have a bigger presence in the country with our new premises at Dubai Industrial Park. In terms of both sales and specially after-sales, there is a presence everywhere in the country. The focus is very much on providing service on-site to our customers,” says Wim Aernouts.
This plan for total on-site coverage has already led MECET to put in place a fleet of service vehicles and technicians, spearheaded by Sprinter vans that carry a healthy supply of spare parts. The company has made such advancements in its mobile workshops that MECET technicians can solve around 89% of machine issues at the customers’ job-sites, Aernouts points out. And now, the mobile fleet has been expanded further with the additional of a heavier unit - a Mercedes truck, he adds. “We already had the vans in our service fleet and now we have upped that mobile service capacity
with the addition of a 12t Mercedes truck fitted with a loading crane, on which we have also installed a complete mobile workshop. There are also several service teams these vehicles will carry to the places where the machines are working,” Aernouts adds. “The vans and truck are like first aid kits for the machines,” says Piet van Bakergem. “On-site service is of course par for the course in the business, but our advantage is that with parts cupboards built into the MECET service vans and truck, we can go in with many more frequently-required parts, ensuring high on-site availability and minimum downtime.”

comanSa upgradeS flattop craneS Why get it? MaxiMuM capacities increased up to 50t, With heavier loads possible at all radii
SarenS launcheS Super heavy lifter Why get it? World’s largest land-based crane by size and capacity can lift 5,000t Sarens, a global heavy lift and transportation major, has launched the SGC-250, calling it the largest land-based crane in the world by size and capacity. Nicknamed Big Carl, the new super heavy lift ring crane has a maximum load moment of 250,000 tonnemetres, which enables it to lift 5,000t on the main boom at a radius of 40m. The main boom erected on-site in Belgium for the unveiling last month was 118m, and can be extended to 160m. The crane’s maximum capacity on the jib is 1,781t and the its maximum height is 250m with the jib extended up to 100m, giving a maximum radius of 275m. The SGC-250 can lift 2,000t at a radius of 100m, while at 165m radius its capacity is 775t. Ground pressure remains under 25t/ sqm due to the large number of wheels on the four bogies that run on the double ring beam and the spreader mats the crane uses. The crane has a total of 128 wheels for slewing and lifting and 96 wheels for travelling, and requires 80 ring spreader mats with a total diameter of 52.8m. The diameter of the double ring (with four rails) is 48.5m. The SGC-250 can operate two blocks, one
on the main boom and one on the jib, which enhances job-site coverage. The crane’s main hook block weighs 105t and has a safe working load (SWL) of 3,200t, while the jib hook weighs 58t with an SWL of 1,600t. Job-site coverage is further increased by the crane’s ability to relocate fully rigged from one lifting position to another, which is done on two sets of wheels, one for slewing 360 degrees and another for travelling, which hydraulically extend into position when required. According to Sarens, this ability to relocate fully rigged is an industry first. With safety a key focus, the SGC-250 has a full redundancy system for slewing and hoisting operations, in which all 12 of the 310kW Caterpillar engines (contained in six power packs) are connected. The SGC250 has an EN ISO 13849-1 safety standard rating of ‘PL E’ – the highest, says Sarens. The crane has ten winches while the maximum line pull is 600KN. Its counterweights come in 52 containers, which are also used to transport components of the disassembled crane. Each container, when filled with locally sourced ballast, provides counterweight of 100t. SPECIFICATIONS

Spanish tower crane specialist Comansa has upgraded its 21LC660 and 21LC750 flat-top tower crane models, which are mainly designed for large industrial projects, energy, mining and PPVC construction. The 24t, 36t and 48t versions of both models have increased their maximum load capacities to 25t, 37.5t and 50t, thanks to the use of a compacted wire rope of smaller diameter and an optimised design of the now lighter trolley-hook set. The changes not only increase the maximum load capacity of the cranes but also improve loads in all radii, including the jib-end load. Using a highly modular counterjib which allows up to six different configurations according to jib length, Comansa has improved the counterjib radii of both the 21LC660 and 21LC750, which will improve the models when they are erected with reduced jib-lengths. Thus, when the 21LC750 is erected with a 50m jib, the counterjib radius is 25m instead of 31m in the previous design. As a novelty in terms of jib length, Comansa now offers an optional 90m radius for special applications. This option is available for the 21LC660 and 21LC750 models, as well as for the 21LC1050 crane. Models 21LC660 and 21LC750 (other than the 20t version of the 21LC660) now feature a new optional hoist mechanism (177hp), which allows speeds of up to 300m per minute. Comansa has also added the Effi-Plus system to the optional 148hp hoist mechanisms, available for all versions of such models.

cat announceS two new ultra-claSS dumper truckS Why get it? class-leading payloads, high reliability, siMple serviceability and efficient production Caterpillar has expanded its mining truck offering with two new dumpers – the 798 AC and the 796 AC. The new electric-drive 798 AC features a 372t payload and will join the fleet of over 1,000 Cat mechanical-drive 797s in the 400-short-ton class. The new electricdrive 796 AC delivers a 326t payload and will be offered in all regions. The 795F AC, in the same size class, will continue to be offered in regions where engine emissions are less regulated. Both trucks will be available in the second quarter of 2019. The design of the new trucks focuses on delivering class-leading payload, high reliability and simple serviceability. These attributes are built on the frame and chassis design proven in 18 million hours of legacy truck operation and now used by the Cat 794 AC. The AC powertrain of each of the two new trucks draws from about five million hours of Cat 795 AC and Cat 794 AC truck
operation. Cat AC electric drive is developed and manufactured by Caterpillar, the single source for the entire powertrain. The Cat C175-16 diesel engine powers both of the new trucks. With more than 21 million hours of operation in mobile equipment and power generation, the engine offers a choice of 3,500hp or 3,100hp to meet a mine’s requirements. To further adapt to the mine, simple software changes can adjust system power to help meet production targets or to work smoothly in mixed fleets. The 796 AC and 798 AC are built for efficient production. Both are designed to minimise empty machine weight, as configured in the field. The design enables the 798 AC to carry its class-leading payload of 372t and to haul more material each cycle on 59/80R63 tires. The new trucks feature four-corner, oil-cooled disc brakes as well as dynamic retarding for stable handling and confident stopping. Superior retarding capability, blended braking and the Cat Traction Control System help boost productivity while enhancing safety. The Cat AC drive is a high voltage system (2,600 volts) that operates at lower current than most other competition.
When combined with Cat’s total integration and design of the truck and drive system, the result is higher efficiency, lower heat generation, smaller and lighter components, and longer component life. The Cat High Efficiency (HE) body is sized to meet payload requirements without compromising vehicle balance, braking or control. Open engine access and service platforms ease maintenance tasks. The modular design allows easy removal and installation of components. The engine, traction alternator, motors, inverter, grid and final drives can be removed independently. Traction alternator and optional inverter platforms allow easier inspections, diagnostics and component swaps. The result is less service time and greater uptime. SPECIFICATIONS

cat all-new d6 electric drive dozer Why get it? better fuel efficiency and advanced agility coMpared to previous Models At 21hp and an operating weight range of 21.7-24.1t, Caterpillar’s all-new D6 delivers new levels of efficiency and performance with a choice of advanced powertrains – the D6 XE with electric drive or the D6 with fully automatic four-speed power shift transmission. Cat says the D6 XE high drive electric drive dozer offers up to 35% better fuel efficiency and increased agility, compared to the previous three-speed model D6T. It features a next-generation electric drive system that offers high performance and added durability. Constant power to the ground, continuous push and greater manoeuvrability mean faster cycle times. Added D6 XE productivity and reduced fuel cost mean customers looking for these benefits can expect to see payback of the added investment over a D6 in less than two years. Simplified diagnostics and the serviceability advantages of a high drive dozer also help reduce service and maintenance costs. The powertrain offers ease of operation, with the operator simply setting the ground speed while the dozer continuously optimises for maximum power and efficiency based on load. With electric drive, there are no gears to shift. The fully automatic four-speed powertrain optimises the transmission without the operator having to worry about shifting. The purpose-built Variable Power Angle Tilt (VPAT) dozer has a structure designed to be stronger yet lighter, so machine balance is optimised for grading without the need for a rear implement or counterweight.

SEaTbElTS Just as in a motor vehicle, wearing your seatbelt is of vital importance in all heavy equipment, perhaps even more so, given the rough terrain that most equipment works on. There is no excuse for not wearing it at all times. Not only will it save lives in case of a rollover, it keeps the operator firmly in the seat when operating on broken terrain, saving energy and reducing close calls by the end of a long day.
INgrESS aNd EgrESS Falling while climbing into or out of a machine’s cab is among the biggest causes of job-site injuries. A good rule of thumb is to never jump when getting on or off equipment and to always maintain threepoint contact, which requires three of four points of contact to be maintained with the vehicle at all times – two hands and one foot, or both feet and one hand. Replace damaged handholds or steps immediately.

Tools of The Trade
Making a Machine suitable for various jobs is the key behind the tool carrier concept, which is Made possible by a plethora of attachMents froM the Major Manufacturers. CMME takes a look at soMe key ones that increase equipMent versatility
T
he term ‘tool carrier’ is one you will hear used very often in the world of construction machinery. Almost every manufacturer of skid-steer and backhoe loaders, and indeed even excavators, endeavours to build their machines around the ‘tool carrier’ concept, wherein one machine is able to do a variety of jobs with just a simple change of implement at its work end. This tool carrier concept wold not have been possible, however, without the various attachments that have been designed to work on the actual machine. These are the tools that make a loader, excavator or backhoe become a tool carrier. The trick, then, is as much in the attachments as it is in the machines, or more. And when it comes to attachments and tools, few companies offer as much of a choice as does Bobcat, the global specialist in compact equipment and one of the pioneers of the tool carrier concept. Indeed, Bobcat has carved a reputation for itself in the market with the versatility if its skid-steer and compact tracked loaders, with which it is synonymous. This versatility depends on the various kinds of jobs that the machines are able to do because of the array of attachments that Bobcat provides for its machines. In fact, that attachment array comprises over 1,000 separate tools and implements, says Gaby Rhayem, managing director, Doosan
Bobcat Middle East. “Not only did we pioneer the concept of one-machine-multiple-uses through our innovative attachment designs, but we also remain perhaps the biggest provider of attachments in the market,” he says. “Bobcat has an attachment for almost every use you can think of. Apart from the standard loading buckets that our skid-steer loaders and CTLs come with - and even in those there is a wide variety of choice – we have breakers, diggers, cutters, trenchers, several material handlers, agricultural tools, you name it. And the most impressive ones are the grader, wheel saw and sand cleaner attachments, which make our compact equipment the most versatile and useful in their category.” The wheel saw and the grader attachments are options that are prized by contractors in the earthmoving sector, Rhayem adds. These two attachments are great boons for operations such as pipelaying, landscaping and roadmaking in small areas and confined spaces. “Our new WS-SL20 self-levelling wheel saw is designed to cut efficiently through asphalt, rock and concrete surfaces. It has a variable segments wheel, which allows the user to quickly change the width of the wheel (50, 80, 100, 120mm) in the field, instead of replacing the complete wheel in a workshop. This provides a saving of 10 hours in the process,” Rhayem explains. “The self-levelling feature on the WS-SL20 allows the attachment to follow and adapt to the contours of the ground and the new design means that a trench cleaner is no longer needed. Utilising well-proven Bobcat
39 Among Bobcat’s wide range of attachments is the grader attachment, which brings a cost-effective solution to levelling earth, complete with laser and sonic precision .

bobcat’s sand cleaner attachMent Bobcat‘s SC200 Sand Cleaner attachment is a useful tool for keeping beaches and sandy areas clean. The attchment, which cuts down the time needed to clean beaches drasctically, is aimed as an invaluable tool in the miantenance of the numerous beaches in the Middle East region. With a working width of 1900mm, a working depth of up to 200mm and a bucket capacity of 350l, the Bobcat sand cleaner is a high-performance attachment which allows the loader operator to quickly sift sand/soil and collect debris and waste as small as cigarette stubs. As well as cigarette stubs, the sand cleaner can also
pick up other small debris such as bottle caps, broken glass, pieces of wood, cans, stones, rocks, plastic bags, syringes and seaweed. Capable of covering a large area at a rate of up to 15,000m²/h, the high productivity offered by the Bobcat sand cleaner is complemented by the high discharge capability. This is provided by the lift arms on the loader and the hydraulic hopper gate on the attachment, allowing the debris to be easily dumped into a waiting truck. The SC200 sand cleaner is compatible with both the standard and high flow versions of the Bobcat T590, T650, T770 and T870 compact track loader models.
components such as the ACD (with Bobcat Software) and valve block components, the new wheel saw has an integrated stabiliser system and a standard rubber shield for stone ejection or dust reduction. There is also a water kit option for dust reduction. Removable deflectors are also a standard feature, allowing the WS-SL20 to operate as close as possible to the pavement edge.” Applications that the wheel saw can be used for include fixed-width trenching for the utilities sector, covering water, gas, power, telecommunications and fibre optic networks. The WS-SL20 can be used for creating excavation sites and for slot cutting and can also be used for maintenance work, including trenching vertical edges for road and pavement repairs, he adds. Describing some of the prime applications that the WS-SL20 can be put to, Rhayem says: “This new Wheel Saw is a must for fibre optics jobs, where each site requires a different trenching width. In response to very valuable feedback from our customers in the field, this new wheel saw features a variable segmented width − from 5-12 cm – and can be replaced in two 2 hours on the job-site. It also has a self-levelling system to adapt to ground conditions.” Grading is also one of the specialised applications that Bobcat has an attachment for, including those can be adapted to laser and sonic systems for precision grading. “We have a wide range of grading solutions based around our compact loaders and grader attachments. The expanded range of grading equipment is designed for use by asphalt
Like all Bobcat compact loaders, these models are equipped with the quick-change Bob-Tach attachment mounting system. This allows them to be combined quickly and safely with several hundred different Bobcat attachments, delivering versatility and time-saving efficiency across applications. The cleaner is presently in use to clean river beach areas near, Porto, Portugal, and José Dias, who is responsible for providing the service, says: “The sand cleaner attachment has brought great gains in efficiency. The work is done faster and saves on resources.”
and concrete contractors for excavating and grading work for new roads, pavements, concrete flatwork, tennis courts, utilities and landscaping projects,” Rhayem says. Loader-mounted Bobcat grader attachments can now be combined not only with a comprehensive choice of Bobcat laser grading equipment but also the Bobcat sonic tracer kit, the first sonic tracer system of its kind for compact loaders, to provide automatic grade control in applications where lasers may not be suitable.
Bobcat’s wheel saw attachment is quickly becoming an essential tool for civic bodies and utility companies in digging precision pathways for pipeand cable-laying applications.
Rhayem explains that laser grading requires the job site to be on a plane, whereas the sonic tracer can follow nearly every terrain. The sonic tracer also provides an advantage when grading inside buildings with obstacles where the laser beam could be interrupted. The Bobcat sonic tracer system also offers the advantage that if the user already has a laser system mounted on the grader, they can also mount the sonic tracer on the blade, allowing them to switch between using the grader with the sonic tracer or the laser system. The 274 mm wide heavy-duty grader attachment is approved for use on the Bobcat S770 and S850 skid-steer, T770 and T870 compact tracked and A770 all-wheel steer loader models. The 244 mm wide grader attachment covers the same models with the addition of the smaller T650 compact tracked loader. The graders feature a 6-way blade plus hydraulic side-shift of up to 33 cm left or right, both of which are fingertip controlled so that the operator can grade nearly any surface without needing to take their hands off the control levers. There are four twoway hydraulic functions including left side up/down; right side up/down; blade rotation left/right and blade side shift left/right. The hydraulic side-shift allows the blade to get further into corners when working in confined areas. It also allows grading right up to an obstacle (such as a pole or structure inside a building), side-shifting to get around it and then side-shifting back to continue to work. This minimises hand labour to clear the area around these objects.
41 The oscillating front bolster provides 12 degrees of oscillation to either side, minimising the effect of dips and bumps on how quickly/or how much the blade needs to respond in these circumstances. Wide flotation tyres on the grader ensure the attachment rolls smoothly across the site. The graders can be converted from standard units to laser graders quickly and easily. The operator only needs to mount the receiver poles, clamp the newly enhanced Bobcat laser receivers onto the poles and plug in the harnesses. Designed to operate using CAN-bus communication, the Bobcat laser receivers are easier to mount and dismount and offer several features and benefits. Installed on the blades of the 244 and 274mm heavy duty grader attachments, the sonic tracer emits ultrasonic signals to maintain a set distance or elevation from an object, surface or the ground, allowing the graders to be used to grade, level, and backfill on a multiple slope terrain when following a string line, kerb stone, the gutter or even a previous pass as a grade control. Grade accuracy is 6.4 mm, and the detection range of the sonic tracer is from 200 to 1300 mm. The Bobcat system comprises a sonic tracer, two slope sensors and one rotation sensor, all of which are high quality Trimble components. The sensors communicate directly with the Bobcat Attachments Control Device (ACD). “Bobcat’s attachments are backed by the service support of the vast Bobcat dealer network, Bobcat Service Specialists and our parts warehouses to reduce downtime. The warranty protection available from Bobcat
allows customers to avoid the disputes that may arise from the compatibility and operating problems that are caused by the use of nonapproved attachments,” says Rhayem. Machinery giant JCB offers a plethora of attachments for both its big and compact equipment, with emphasis on a range of breakers for its excavators.
JCB’s breakers Over at another machinery powerhouse, JCB, the hydraulic breaker is among the tools and attachments that the British brand prides itself on, says Rajbir Sandhu, district manager, JCB sales, Middle East. “JCB Attachments offers three ranges of
hydraulic breakers designed to work with JCB excavators, backhoe loaders and compact machine lines, as well as universal breakers for fitment on other machine brands. There are three ranges of breakers: contractor breakers, professional breakers and handheld breakers. Both the contractor breakers and professional line of hydraulic hammers are supplied with a three-year warranty as standard,” he says. “Contractor hydraulic hammers have been specifically designed for JCB machinery as well as other brands of excavator and breaker tool

koMatsu’s Xcentric ripper One of the most important uses of the excavator in the GCC is in quarries as a rock breaker, and Japanese giant Komatsu is a favourite in the segment. The global biggie has some of the most innovative and unique attachments in its line up to complement its excavators - and one such is the Xcentric Ripper. “The Xcentric Ripper is a unique tool. It is a solution for rock breaking, which has been patented by Komatsu,” says Komatsu Middle East’s Jehad Jayyousi. “It works on a different principle than the rock breakers. It is a hydraulic
machine which delivers power to a ripper tip, not a chisel, operating on centrifugal force. In some quarry applications, it can increase productivity by up to three times.” By adopting the mechanism in which vibrations generated by the eccentric gears are amplified in the accumulator, the Xcentric Ripper enables efficient rock breaking and demolition. Its simple structure allows for ease of maintenance with no areas exposed to direct forceful impact or friction. Having no impact mechanism, it achieves low-noise work performance on par with that of using buckets.

carrier. They provide a genuine JCB product for users looking to retain genuine parts, expecting good quality and high productivity but with a budget to work to. Each hammer has been assembled in the UK to the highest quality levels, extensively tested and matched to work perfectly with JCB carrier machines and is CE marked as appropriate.” The range includes 14 models, from the compact HM012T at just 120kg operating weight to suit mini and micro excavators, through to the 3.8t M380T that has been designed to work with excavators in the 4060t category. The HM033T and above in the contractor breaker range have accumulators to protect the carrier machine from hydraulic pressure spikes, reducing possible wear and tear on the hydraulic system. “JCB’s hammers for use with equipment above an 8-tonne operating weight include a refillable auto greasing system as standard, ensuring the breaker always receives the correct amount of lubrication throughout the working day. This cuts downtime and boosts productivity for the customer,” says Sandhu. He explains further that two-speed control valves allow the operator to customise tool speed and stroke length, dependent on the material that is being broken. This increases productivity and reduces the risk of damage to the breaker and the carrier. An auto-stop feature on the HM080T model and above reduces blank firing, protecting the breaker from unnecessary wear and damage. “JCB’s professional breaker range has been designed and built to work in specialist dedicated breaking applications. They are supplied ‘ready to go’ with hoses, hangar bracket, moil and chisel tools. Their solid body design provides maximum strength with lower weight and the low maintenance accumulator helps reduce maintenance costs,” Sandhu says. Exact match of tool and piston diameter maximises blow energy transfer and energy not absorbed by the material being broken is used to lift the tool which pressurises the accumulator ready for the next blow. Reusing this energy increases impact force and reduces running costs. “The two platforms provide customers a solution for all applications and budgets. A universal option is also available without the mounting bracket for use on other brands of equipment if operating a mixed fleet.” Cat’s wide range Speaking of breakers and hammers leads us to Caterpillar, whose range of attachments for compact equipment and excavators also prominently features breaking tools. In fact, Cat recently released its new B-Prefix Hammers which feature low owning and operating costs,
versatility and ease of use. Available in B4(s) and B6(s) silenced and B4 and B6 non-silenced versions, they are designed for ‘plug-and-play’ operation with a range of compact equipment, while delivering optimum life-cycle value. Cat says the new hammers are suited for skid steer loaders, multi-terrain loaders, compact track loaders, mini hydraulic excavators (38t operating weights), and backhoe loaders working in a range of construction and lightdemolition applications, including site prep, landscaping, masonry, and concrete breaking.
Caterpillar’s line-up of attachments are designed to work with its small and large machines in tasks such as material handling, breaking and hammering and earth-moving jobs.
The B-Prefix hammers use a simple design that ensures reliability, versatility, ease-of-use and maintenance. As a package solution, the matching Caterpillar-designed hydraulic kits are also offered and the best fit for Cat machines, providing customers a breaker package with superior design and benefits. Also for compact equipment, Cat recently launched a side discharge bucket that collects and transports loose materials via a belt-type conveyor from adjustable openings on either side of the bucket. A rotating agitator works to keep material flowing to the conveyor. Adjusting conveyor speed and door openings controls the volume of material discharged and the area covered. Features of the Cat Side Discharge Bucket suit this attachment for varied application, including agriculture, construction, landscaping, road maintenance, and material handling. Another recent Cat attachment release is designed for larger machines. The GSH420/ GSH520 grapples feature design refinements for effectively handling bulk materials In a wide range of applications, including handling shredded scrap, such as long structural beams and car bodies; handling rocks at construction sites; and waste at recycling stations. The new grapples feature horizontal placement of the cylinders, thus creating a profile that allows for effective material penetration and efficient bulk-material handling. The design enhances the strength, reliability, and durability of the new grapples, which are available in four-tine and five-tine shell configurations and in closed or semiopen versions.
