ADAPTING, ADOPTING If there is one good thing that can be said about adversity, it is that it forces the necessary change in the world. You could be merrily going your own way in the world, doing things the way you’ve always done them, and a sudden event upends all your pre-set notions and changes your habits. Had it not been for that sudden event, you would still have continued on your merry way and in the process perhaps missed out on something better that you were shying away from. This is precisely what Covid-19 has done – and is still doing – to a section of the Middle East machinery sector. There was a time, not long ago, when manufacturers and dealers did expend much effort try and talk to customers about telematics, machine control and fleet monitoring systems, knowing the answer would be the age old “it’s too expensive” or “it’s not very useful for me” or some variation thereof. But the pandemic has jolted many people in the machinery world enough for them to come out of their comfort zones and take a fresh look at the possibilities of options they had hitherto been ignoring. This may have already led us to the cusp of a significant transformation. What has helped this transformation is the demonstrable gains that these systems have already provided in 2020 at the height of the lockdowns and the pandemic situation. Customers who had already signed up for the telematics services from the brands whose machinery they use found the going significantly easier than those without such services when it came to maintaining uptime and keeping the job-site running. Helping this was the recent setting up of facilities such as the Volvo CE Uptime Centre in the Middle East with its partner FAMCO, and various manufacturers pushing their own versions of connected services.
While discussing the excavator sector with the major manufacturers in this issue we learnt form the likes of JCB how their LiveLink telematics system has made the difference in the way they could service customers when the going was particularly tough last year. Meanwhile, Caterpillar three new launches that are Middle East ready also have the full suite of the manufacturer’s telematics systems. And the drive to connectivity and machine monitoring is not limited to the earthmoving segment. In our look at compressors in this issue, we find again how Kaeser Kompressoren’s smart technologies help its customers maintain uptime and trouble shoot pre-emptively to prevent major downtimes. What’s more, in every sphere that these connected technologies are being used, the users are also benefitting from efficiency analyses through data, understanding how time and resources are being wasted in their operations or where operator training is necessary. All this is the result of adapting to an adverse situation and it’s clear that if the trajectory that the pandemic has pushed the machinery world into continues, we will end up adopting - and indeed embracing – the best practices of the times in this region to our own benefit.

RAK heavy lift installs suspension bridge
Hospitality developer RAK AMI Hotel has completed the installation of what is billed as the longest suspension bridge in the northern emirates, connecting two buildings of the under-construction Mövenpick Resort Al Marjan Island. The suspension bridge is said to be a stand-out feature of the hotel being developed at a cost of $148m. The bridge is 36m long, has been installed at a height of 44.2m and will boast eight hotel rooms. It is supported by four main trusses, each weighing 55t. With intermediate beams and a composite floor deck, the bridge structure was assembled at the

GENIE RT SCISSORS IN ITALIAN ROAD PROJECT

s the Ccvid-19 pandemic swept across Europe last year causing a general lockdown, many people were still busy with activities that could not be interrupted Such was the challenge for Italian equipment providers CGT Edilizia (Genoa branch) and its enduser customer Pavimental S.p.A. backed by a small army of 32 Genie GS-series scissor lifts. The mission? Restore the A12 (Genoa-Chiavari section) and A26 (Genoa Voltri-Masone section) motorway flyovers, and complete finishing work at height in the Morandi Tunnel to the rebuilt Morandi Bridge. In addition to 12 Genie GS-3369 RT rough terrain scissor lifts, CGT Edilizia notably recommended 20 larger Genie GS-4390 RT models – 10 of which were dedicated to the installation of lighting, signage and ventilation on the Morandi Tunnel section. Offering the ability to maintain a high level of productivity while allowing operators to respect the appropriate social distance, the Genie GS-4390 RT helped to ensure the motorways’ rapid reopening. Rudj Rocchi, manager, CGT Edilizia, says: “There are several things about the Genie GS-4390 RT scissor lift that made it ideal for the job. In addition to

LIEBHERR CRAWLERS IN DANISH FLEET
T
he Danish company HMEntreprenor is based just 1.5km from the headquarters of the JMM Group, Liebherr’s Danish distributor. In 2017, HMEntreprenør ordered 12 machines from Generation 6. Following Bauma 2019 in Munich, the company acquired 12 new Liebherr crawler excavators to replace Generation 6 excavators, and early this year more excavators are to be delivered. HM-Entreprenor is convinced more than ever by the quality and performance of Liebherr machines, as Leif Ejlertzen, company manager, says “this time it will be Liebherr”, when he needs to replace machines. The company currently operates nine Liebherr R 926s, three R 945s,
to be joined by two new R 914 compacts in this quarter. The machines are from the Generation 8 of crawler excavators, presented by Liebherr at Bauma 2019. It was there that Leif Rudebeck Petersen of the JMM Group and Michael Mortensen of HM-Entreprenr closed the deal. The proximity of the two companies is very convenient for the delivery, but this was not the only criterion taken into account in the decision: service, quality and the competent people also played major roles. JMMA has over 75 years of experience and now covers all of the Danish market. Ejlertzen, coordinator of the construction company, is impressed by the performance of the latest generation of excavators. He
was pleasantly surprised by the Generation 6 excavators in 2017, but, he says: “The improvements made mean that the performance of the Generation 8 machines is even more impressive.” Liebherr excavators are being be used in the Danish company’s biggest project: the construction of a 240,000-square metre ² logistics centre. Large quantities of earth must be shifted in this project, so the power of the Generation 8 excavators is a great asset for this site. Machine reliability is also important, because every machine stoppage represents huge cost to the business. Liebherr says the Generation 8 crawler excavators are equipped towards the future. Engine power is increased, the counterweight is
heavier and the bucket capacities are higher. The overall performance is therefore much greater. The Danish company works with the local dealer JMM. HM-Entreprenor has a full-service contract for all of its machines. Ejlertzen is familiar with the level of service of the competitors, and according to him “none of them compares to the JMM Group”. The service is very important, the machines are all operating at the same time, so the company needs to be sure that no problems will slow down the project. In addition, maintenance is easier and safer on the new Generation 8 models. All service points are accessible from ground level. Engine oil, hydraulic oil, fuel and urea levels can be monitored the instrument panel display.

T
he requirement to work at height is virtually as old as human civilization itself; and there is nothing intrinsically new in the approaches being used today. More than 17,000 years ago, when our forefathers were creating the famous cave paintings in Lascaux, France, they created a cantilevered platform, enabling them to paint the high, overhanging sections safely; and no less a figure than the great Renaissance artist, Michelangelo, followed this same approach when, in 1508, he started his famous project to decorate the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. In order to reach the chapel’s ceiling, he installed a wooden platform held up by brackets inserted into holes in the wall. This working platform could carry all his artist’s utensils, but wouldn’t obscure his view of the composition when seen from floor level. This same quest for a practical, safe option for working at height has been the driving force behind the modern aerial work platform. It’s often preferred to scaffolding because - while immensely useful and capable of multiple applications - scaffolding has the disadvantage of being potentially insecure: the risk of its tipping increases in direct proportion to the height of the structure.
Yet despite the benefits of the aerial work platform, it was only relatively recently that an inventor had the brainwave of creating a device that used all the practicality, convenience and security of an aerial working platform on a smaller scale. In 1944, an engineer named Jay Eitel designed a ‘mini’ aerial work platform; one that was highly portable, could be operated by one person and extended to a relatively low height. Then in 1963, another engineer, Charles Larson, added the familiar pantograph mechanism and used the term Scissor Lift as part of his patent. Today, the scissor lift industry is a US$2 billion sector, with global sales expected to exceed US$3 billion by 2026 - showing a CAGR of over 8% (Global Market Insights, 2020).
Market trends Quite simply, the scissor lift is a child of its time, with the sector prospering from many key industry trends and market forces. Firstly, the increasing influence of Health & Safety legislation is calling for the use of machinery in smaller-scale projects where potentially hazardous home-made options were previously popular. An advantage with the scissor lift is that, whether rented or bought, it will comply with the necessary legislation and should conform to the guidelines of ISO16368:2010. It doesn’t place the onus on site workers or staff following their own interpretation of the workplace handbook.

Speaking of staff, the thrust of Health & Safety legislation is very much on replacing human workers, where possible, for most lifting tasks - and the scissor lift is the ideal mechanised alternative. The wide availability of scissor lifts through rental plans also further reduces cost, and given that these smaller jobs will often require shorter timeframes, while it might not be cost-effective to actually purchase a scissor lift, it makes good sense for a business to hire one for, eg, 48 hours. The rental sector is also important because a potential drawback of scissor lift technology is the high initial cost of the equipment (especially given the number of madefor-purpose components in the pneumatic systems and a reliance on high-quality critical parts). Another factor prevalent throughout 2020 - and prompted by the Covid pandemic is the dramatic growth of e-commerce, leading to a huge emphasis on warehouse logistics. Here, the humble scissor lift is an indispensable tool for quick and affordable in-house stacking and transfer, and we are also likely to see the e-commerce sector spawning new features and technical requirements, as more and more ‘dedicated’ scissor lifts emerge in response to the trend.

Notwithstanding, diesel-power remains the preferred option for machines largely used outdoors, since they remove any dependence on battery maintenance and handy power connections. These tougher machines feature higher ground clearance and more rugged tyres, and will also often have more platform features, such as an extending and revolving deck. Note that in terms of power and operating systems, the actual workings of the pantograph system can be hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical - with the first two options often preferred, because in the event of power failure, the machine can simply return to ground level. The market is also seeing key manufacturers invest in continuous innovation. ‘Smart’ technology is important here - scissor lifts lend themselves well to a variety of IoT applications, with interconnectivity between fleets and features such as reactive lowering and connection to operators’ mobile devices becoming commonplace on higher-end machines. In areas such as construction, building maintenance and utility projects, scissor lifts with an extension of 10-20m are becoming more in demand, with their enhanced stability, practicality and

Global and MEA markets A glimpse at global sales figures for scissor lifts show that the Middle East and Africa are actually the world’s smallest markets, comprising only 1.8% of the total sales of scissor lifts around the world. The North American continent leads with a 36.1% market share and the Asia/Pacific is close behind with 33.5%. Europe follows with 26% and Latin America is a distant fourth with 2.4% of global scissor lift sales. Certainly, in the case of the Middle East, this is partly explained by the traditional availability of large numbers of migrant staff, especially in the construction and hospitality sectors. This oversupply of labour has often led to a reluctance to mechanise - “why invest in machinery when I have 50 staff to do the job?” - but recent years have seen new regulatory requirements make their mark, especially in the UAE, with successive waves of the Construction and Labour Law in 2013, 2017 and 2019. The UAE aerial work platform market was valued at $285.34m in 2018 and is expected to reach $379.03m by the end of 2027, a CAGR of 3.46% for aerial work platforms across the UAE (Research and Markets,

DESIGNED FOR PAVING APPLICATIONS WITH VOGELE MINI CLASS PAVERS IN CRAMPED CONDITIONS Paver manufacturer Vogele has introduced a new extending screed with a basic width of just 1.1m, the smallest screed in its range, designed to complement the applications of its SUPER 700(i) and SUPER 800(i) Mini Class pavers. According to Vogele, the new AB 200 Extending Screed is designed for applications such as paving narrow paths, paving between tram tracks or paving in milled tracks, where every centimetre matters. While the screed’s basic width is 1.1m, this can be hydraulically extended up to 2m, giving it a basic width 10cm narrower than the existing AB 220 and facilitating highprecision paving projects in extremely cramped conditions. Using a special system for pave width reduction, users can also implement pave widths of just 0.5m, as well as achieve a pave width of up to 3.2m using bolt-on extensions. The manufacturer, part of the Wirtgen Group now owned by John Deere, added that the AB 200 expands the potential applications for the Vogele Mini Class pavers and provides roadbuilders in urban construction, landscaping and track work with more room for manœuvre than before. Together with the slightly larger AB 220, Vogele covers the entire range of pave widths for small construction projects. DUMPER TRUCK NOW OFFERS LOWER COST PER TON OF MATERIAL MOVED WITH 7% IMPROVEMENT IN TORQUE AND 5% HIGHER PRODUCTIVITY FIGURES OVER PREDECESSOR Cat has updated its 777E rigid hauler with improvements in power, torque and transmission control to improve productivity, reduce fuel consumption and drive down cost-pertonne of material moved. According to Cat, the 2021 777E truck now offers the highest-in-class payload of 98.2t, while the updates also include configurable Eco Mode operation for the Cat C32 engine to deliver increased horsepower and a 7% improvement in torque to increase hauling performance. Optimised fuel mapping of the engine and adaptive economy mode determine the most efficient operating point to
improve the truck’s fuel economy. Additionally, operators can select a variable engine derate from 0.5% to 15% in Eco Mode operation to further reduce fuel consumption — and the new automatic engine idle shutdown feature reduces fuel use and wear on engine components. The updated 777E Truck improves productivity by up to 5% with a new Advanced Productivity Electronic Control Strategy (APECS) system that enables better transmission and engine coordination for more efficient use of available engine power. The result is as much as 7% more torque delivered to the drive wheels for improved hauling performance, says Cat, while the new control system also provides smooth shifting for greater operator comfort. The 777E now offers a second gear start when underfoot conditions and grade allow. The strategy enables the truck to reach optimum speed more quickly,
lowers cycle times and minimises the number of transmission shifts. To save fuel, a new auto neutral idle feature shifts the transmission into a neutral-like condition when the truck is idling in drive. The transmission’s speed limit feature allows the machine to run at optimal gear for selected speed. The 777E also features updates that elevate operator efficiency. A new gearshift lever with integrated hoist and park brake controls eases operation, and the auto hoist feature delivers controlled truck bed descent to prevent body slams and increase component life. 01 START WITH A WALKAROUND Before beginning every shift, walk around the excavator to see all is in order with the tracks, cutting edges, machine edges, arms and booms, seals and joins. Check for oil leaks, cracks, and wear and tear, as well as debris stuck at key points, such as in gear teeth, that can impair proper functioning of the machine.
02 INSPECT THE GROUND Before starting a shift, check the work area for holes, ditches, and inclines that may pose a problem once you get to work. 03 GAS UP AT THE START If you run out of fuel in the middle of using your excavator, it could suddenly stop working. This could cause its bucket or arm to suddenly fall and could cause the bucket to drop its load. All of this can be unsafe if there are other workers nearby. Play it safe and start operation with a full tank of fuel.

ADHERE TO LOAD CAPACITIES Double-check the maximum load capacity of an excavator before starting a job. While you’re using the excavator, make sure you fill the bucket correctly and don’t try to lift a load heavier than the machine is built to handle. Also make sure to follow the recommended load chart when using the excavator as a material transporter on the job site or when using it as a lifter to place material at a height.
CHECK THE ATTACHMENT Only use manufacturer-approved attachments, and make sure you’ve selected the correct attachment for the job you’re about to perform. In your walkaround before starting the excavator, see that the correct attachment has been fitted to the machine and also check whether it’s been fitted correctly.

PROPER SHUT DOWN Safety concerns don’t end with the machine being switched off. Follow a checklist at the end of every shift such as lowering the bucket or attachment to the ground, parking on a flat, level surface outside the work area so that the machine is not an obstacle for other equipment, and activating the transmission lock and parking brake.

SLOW YOUR ROLL Steady and smooth travel is key to safe operation. Travel at low, steady speeds, avoid sharp turns, and minimise sudden stops. When you’re driving the excavator, keep the bucket close to the machine and watch for obstacles ahead. Go slowly over obstacles that cannot be avoided.

TRAINED OPERATORS Make sure all excavator operators are properly trained for a particular model before using any equipment and follow manufacturer guidelines. he Middle East market for compressors is primarily for units suitable in the construction, maintenance and oil & gas sectors, with heavy representation of global brands such as Doosan Portable Power (DPP), Germany’s Kaeser Kompressoren, Atlas Copco Group-owned Chicago Pneumatic and Gardner Denver Group’s CompAir, all of whom have had long and successful associations with the region, with their machines visible on many construction sites. While Covid-19 has definitely exerted a lot of pressure on the market, several big names continue to remain upbeat about their prospects in the region’s compressor segment, with some, such as DPP, having delivered large orders last year in the thick of the pandemic. On the whole, though, the compressor segment has not escaped the general adversity of the times, which market players have had to respond to. At Kaeser Kompressoren, the big German brand in the Middle East, regional director Carl Briden says the top priority in the pandemic was to ensure safety and job security. “From the very beginning, safety protocols were put in place, with a clear statement to
the 5,000-plus employees that no jobs would be lost. Flexibility and fast action have been the keys for surviving 2020 and carrying on operations. Digital tools were quickly utilised for both internal staff and external customer communications and meetings, and digital transformation was a priority for the company, along with being always prepared for the unexpected through planning for various scenarios,” Briden says. With Covid-19 bringing digital transformation to the forefront, service packages such as Kaeser’s Sigma Smart Air concept could now be more important than before. Briden explains: “Our Sigma Smart Air concept is the advanced service of tomorrow, available today. In addition to enabling entry into the world of predictive maintenance, Sigma Smart Air also supports step-by-step digitalisation of compressed air systems. It is basically providing support for our customers’ entire compressed air supply 24/7, 365 days a year. The best part is that you pay only for what you actually use. The concept is not yet popular in the Middle East, however I believe it will be successful in the future in our region.” Briden adds that Kaeser is continuing development and growth of its MOBILAIR range, especially in the Middle East. Not only is the range’s growth expanding, but the manufacturer has also specially designed a dedicated product range for the Middle East.

he excavator is probably the most important model of construction machinery there is, and in the eyes of the layman, probably the most common and definitive example of the equipment world. As such, it has been around for longer than we care to remember, but that does not mean it is old. The importance of the machine in the world of construction means that manufacturers have constantly upgraded it with new features and technologies, and kept the market under an incessant series of new model launches. The latest in this series for the Middle East is the trio of machines launched by Caterpillar last month. In a global virtual launch event due to the various restrictions in place globally on physical gatherings and events, Caterpillar launched three key “Next Generation” models in its excavator range: the 345GC, 374 and 395 Next Gen excavators. All of these are aimed at markets such as the Middle East and cover weight classes from the higher medium to the heavy. All improve productivity and fuel efficiency while reducing operating costs. The first and smallest of these new Cats is the 42t machine, the Next Gen 345 GC, which is also perhaps the most important for the Middle East, given that the demand for diggers in the region is concentrated mainly in the 20-40t operating weight range. Cat says the new 345 GC is designed to deliver a balance of performance, reliability and lowcost operation. The excavator can increase fuel efficiency (cubic metres/tonnes per unit of fuel) up to 25% and lower operating costs up to 30% compared to the 349D2. In addition, it
incorporates significant engineering advances for safety and operator convenience. The 345 GC’s fuel efficiency comes primarily from electronically controlled main pumps and valve to ensure more work gets done with each unit of fuel. Plus, two operating modes help to manage fuel consumption more actively: Smart mode automatically matches engine speed and hydraulic power for the highest fuel efficiency as working demands change; Power mode delivers maximum productivity in high-demand applications such as truck loading and trenching. Cat says extended maintenance intervals and easy access to consolidated filter locations together lower maintenance costs. Hydraulic, air, and fuel filters have increased capacity for longer life: Service intervals for fuel filters extend from 500 to 1,000 hours and from 2,000 to 3,000 hours for the hydraulic return filter. Cat adds that it has designed the 345 GC’s cab environment to reduce effort. All controls are in front to eliminate twisting in the seat. The ISO-certified, sound-suppressed ROPS cab is sealed and pressurised; large glass areas enhance all-around visibility. Narrow pillars at the front corners of the cab further contribute to forward visibility. A standard rear-view camera extends rearward visibility. Most machine settings are controlled through the high-resolution 203mm touchscreen monitor, and a jog dial and shortcut keys are positioned on the right console. In addition, joystick function can be customised through the monitor to match operator preference, including operating pattern and response rate. All preferences are saved with the operator ID and restored at log in. The 345 GC is available with a number boom and stick combinations, including a 6.9m reach boom with a choice of 2.9m or 3.35m sticks.

Cat buckets, hammers and couplers are available to help take on many tasks. The second new Cat digger to be launched is the Next Generation 374, designed to offer “high production, two times more structural durability, and up to 20% less maintenance costs than the industry leader it replaces, the 374F”, says Cat. Brian Abbott, worldwide product manager for Caterpillar large excavators, says: “A key to production is our new dedicated hydrostatic swing circuit. The circuit enables regenerating swing brake energy and independent management of cylinder oil flow. What that means for owners and operators is higher operating efficiency and smoother, more predictable performance when multitasking with the excavator.” Three operation modes are available: Power, Smart, and ECO. Power mode is maximum power at all times. ECO mode lowers engine speed and cycle times while maintaining breakout force. Smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power to

digging conditions, reducing fuel consumption and optimising performance. Engine speed automatically lowers when hydraulic demand decreases, further reducing fuel usage. The cooling system features a new ondemand fan that’s designed to operate only when required, saving fuel and ensuring maximum efficiency. An available auto reverse function clears debris from the cooling cores. “An additional key to production is simple, easy-to-use technology. We make it available as standard equipment. Advanced 2D includes an additional touchscreen monitor to enable in-field design. 3D adds GPS and GLONASS positioning for pinpoint accuracy. The 374’s built-in communication technology makes it easier than ever to connect to 3D services like Trimble Connected Community or Virtual Reference Station. Lift Assist is a new safety
feature that helps prevent the excavator from tipping. It quickly calculates the weight of the actual load being lifted and compares it to the excavator’s rated capability. Visual and auditory alerts show and tell the operator if the excavator is within a safe working range. Whether equipped with a bucket or hammer, standard 2D E-Fence prevents the excavator from moving outside operator-defined points. This helps protect the machine and other objects from damage and reduces the risk of fines related to zoning or underground and above ground utility damage. It also helps prevent operator fatigue by reducing over swinging and digging. Cat Product Link™ makes managing the machine easy. It provides a constant stream of wireless information available via the online VisionLink® interface, allowing machine managers in the office to quickly evaluate critical operating information.

While using attachments the Auto Hammer Stop feature prevents unnecessary wear and tear on the attachment and machine. A warning message appears on the monitor after 15 seconds of continuous firing; the hammer will automatically stop after 30 seconds of continuous firing. An optional Work Tool Recognition feature saves time and energy when changing attachments. A simple shake of an attached tool confirms its identity and automatically adjusts the hydraulic system to the parameters the operator set for that specific tool. The optional Cat PL161 Attachment Locator is a Bluetooth device that makes finding attachments and other gear quick and easy. The excavator’s onboard Bluetooth reader or Cat App on a smart phone will locate the device automatically up to a distance of 91m. When it comes to durability, the 374’s booms, sticks and frames are twice as strong as those on the previous model. Booms have increased top and bottom plate thickness; sticks have increased side, bottom, and bracket plate thickness; and frames have increased base frame and counterweight mounting plate thickness. Additional reinforcements are built into the car body, track link, track rollers, and boom, stick, and bucket cylinders to ensure long-term, trouble-free performance. Extended and synchroniSed maintenance intervals contribute to the 374’s lower long-term costs. The new Cat air filter with an integrated pre-cleaner and primary and secondary filters provides double the dust-holding capacity of the previous design. The new Cat hydraulic return filter has a 3,000-hour service life — a 50% increase over previous filters. Fuel system filters are synchronised for service at 1,000 hours — a 100% increase over the previous filters. The fuel system’s water and sediment drains and hydraulic system’s oil level check are positioned close together at ground level, for faster, easier, and safer routine maintenance. Meanwhile, the largest new Cat excavator, the Next Generation Cat 395, offers contractors up to 10% more production, two times more structural durability, and up to 20% less maintenance costs than the industry leader it replaces, the 390F. “We increased swing torque and stick force by 10%. These increases enable contractors to use larger buckets for much greater productivity,” says Abbot while describing the behemoth with a 94t operating weight. A key driver to the 395’s production is a new dedicated hydrostatic swing circuit — a feature found only on larger Cat mining shovels like

The 395 delivers that and so much more.” At British biggie JCB, while the 20t-class excavator is the key in the line-up, the smaller 14t class has gained in importance recently, says Ahmed Shouman, GM, JCB Middle East. “The market demand has changed with all the urban developments and cityscapes. The need for smaller and medium machines has become greater now. Customers are not looking for bigger machines as there is no space for them in the cities. We listened to them and found they’re looking increasingly for smaller, more compact machines that can do the jobs where the larger or conventional sized machines cannot go, and also reduce operating costs in the process,” Shouman says. “We recently launched an upgraded JS140, a 14t machine equipped with our InteliControl feature that allows the customer to choose

from three different power modes and gives him the optimal power needed to do different jobs. It also has some technology inside the cabin, where operators will find a 7-inch intelligent LCD display controlling the mode selection and activities the machine can do.” He adds that JCB understands that as machine sizes are reduced, the customer expectation on operational costs is correspondingly reduced. “For that we’ve introduced a new efficient hydraulic filter with an increased life cycle and the machine also
has a new air filtration feature called the JCB Eject, which is a pre-cleaner for the air filter, improving the air filtration system to give the machine more power and also lengthen the lifecycle of the air filter.” Shouman elaborates that there is still the demand on the medium sized 20t excavator, which remains popular in the Middle East. JCB has its JS205 and JS220 in the segment and this year it is launching several upgrades on the former, again to meet the customer demands and needs. The upgrades will make for lower operating costs, longer lifetime for components and more productivity. “Regionally, the 20-22t class is the largest demand segment. But even in this segment we have varied demands from customers. So that’s why we have two different models - the JS205 and JS220. The former is very popular for its simplicity, yet is a robust machine. The JS220 is a more developed model with an electronic engine for superior performance and higher power in the engine and hydraulics. It can be used in a more versatile way, especially when it comes to attachments, which require higher hydraulic flow. So, the two models together compete JCB’s 20-22t segment.” LiveLink is JCB’s telematics solution that enables customers to remotely manage their fleets. From the job-site efficiency and the health of individual machines to the location of the machines and their uptime - all this information is available to customers in real time using LiveLink. “This year we’ve launched the new LiveLink app and the web portal which allows our customers to do more with the LiveLink telematics system and manage their fleets even more efficiently. The system helps to increase uptime by identifying problems before they happen at the site and gives a real time alert for critical maintenance activities that need to

be done immediately. The alerts go to the fleet manager, the dealer and to JCB, so it’s a threepronged monitoring of the machines. Once an alert goes out, the required maintenance is scheduled immediately with the dealer. This also reduces the admin time by integrating several processes. “The JCB LiveLink system also integrates machines from other brands and centralises them in one dashboard in which fleet owners and operators can monitor their entire fleet, whether it comprises JCB machines or is a mixed fleet,” Shouman explains. Japanese giant Komatsu introduced two new models to the region in early 2020 - a 20t and a 50t model - which are of great importance to the Middle East’s excavator segment. The 50t weight class C500LC-10R has several features and upgrades that makes it among the standard bearers in its class on the market, says Ashraf Hashish, senior GM, Komatsu Middle East. “Among the improvements that Komatsu has engineered into the model is a 21% increase in efficiency compared to the PC450-8R. There are also other features such as advanced management system of variable engine speed matching control, fan clutch system and reduction of hydraulic piping loss that contribute to its efficiency.” The 50-tonner offers higher productivity with a larger bucket capacity and powerful digging operation and its design also means lower maintenance cost for the customer. Detection systems prevent failure of main components and a more visible monitor screen makes it easy to read maintenance information. In addition there is a new larger-sized undercarriage and heavy-duty main frame to improve robustness and reliability. A large, comfortable cab enhances the operator environment and an optional rear-view monitor system improves safety for the operator Komatsu’s second new release is the PC21010M0, which now spearheads the company’s assault on the vital 20t excavator sector in the region. The most important point about the models is that they are designed and made specifically for the Middle East, and not a global model tweaked for the region. Explaining the specificity of the new model in an exclusive conversation with CMME, Hashish, says: “Our new 20t excavator features a new design. The existing 20t model was due for an upgrade and when we went in for that upgrade we improved a whole bunch of things in terms of machine weight, productivity and fuel consumption. This new machine has many innovative features. The most important new figure is the 20% lower fuel consumption. Despite increase in both capacity and weight due to a bigger bucket and a strengthened

boom, we have reduced fuel consumption.” Meanwhile, at Case Construction Equipment, the popularity trend of the models has closely followed the Middle East market preference. Zane Barnard, product specialist at Case, Middle East and Africa, explains: “Over the last two years our 35t excavators, the CX350B and C, have done well throughout the Middle East, followed closely with our 22t CX220B and C.” He explains that Case offers a wide model range of medium to large excavators in the region for various applications, forming one
of the most comprehensive line-ups from a major brand in the meaty general construction, quarrying, mining and utility segments. “Our largest models are the CX500C, CX700B and CX800B, which are all targeted at mining applications. The CX370C and CX490C are for both quarrying and mining while the CX350C is also a quarrying and entry-level mining machine. The Case CX300C is a utility machine for using tools such as breakers and is also an entry-level machine for quarry work. Meanwhile, the CX220C and CX250C are the popular utility machine for versatile use across infrastructure, road building and general construction, while the CX130C is the perfect model to meet the needs of urban and infrastructure needs,” Barnard explains. Case counts the special modifications to its machines for the Middle East as elements that customers in the region can benefit from, with the machines sporting adaptation to tackle the harsh conditions of Middle East job-sites. Barnard elaborates: “With the high ambient temperatures and mainly dusty conditions in the region, we have increased the engine cooling efficacy in our excavators. We have fitted a ‘Super Tropical’ cooling system, capable of handling ambient temperatures of 55°C. Helping keep the cooling system clean is a dust screen that is easy to remove and clean. We have larger fuel tanks and onboard refuelling pumps, keeping you productive and minimising down time.” Also helping to minimise downtime is the large and strong Case dealer network throughout the Middle East, he adds. “Each dealer is equipped with outstanding technical, parts and commercial teams who we have trained ourselves at Case to offer high levels of customer support. Customers can rest assured they will receive outstanding support wherever they are.” Over at Sunward, the excavator is a speciality.
39 Bob Xie, managing director, Sunward Middle East Division, says: “We are among the top 20 excavator makers in the world, with 60 products being exported to more than 100 countries. Our excavator range includes the medium models from 14.8-22.6t and the large excavators from 36.2-90.5t working weights. The medium and large models, like the 21t, 36t and 50t, are the most popular for us in the Middle East in earthmoving, quarrying and mining applications.” Sunward also customises its products for the challenging environment of the Middle East. Xie explains: “We have made some technological improvements to resist tough environments, including extra-large coolant tanks and fans in the engines and hydraulic systems, high-quality filters and resistive paints, which allow our equipment to be used in the 50°-plus desert heat in the Middle East and North Africa. This is followed up with high-level maintenance, resulting in Sunward equipment being used in this region for over a decade now without any issue. Xie adds that of particular relevance to the dusty Middle East conditions, a two-stage air filtration system is effective in preventing entry of dust, with a Radial Seal large-capacity air filter adopted for the second stage, providing higher filter efficiency and facilitating cleaning and replacement of the filter element. Both the fuel and oil filters are placed close to each other for easier and more convenient maintenance. A capacious main pump chamber and simple pipeline layout also facilitate maintenance and

operation, while the turbo charger is provided with an anti-scald protection cover. Japanese excavator specialist Kobelco’s models in the GCC top out at the 85t heavies, but Murat Derinbay director, Kobelco Middle East and Africa, explains that the largest market segment by volume for Kobelco remains the 19-22t one. “Our SK220XDLC fits precisely in this segment. One of our advanced Dash-10 models, this unit is achieving remarkable fuel consumption figures for a machine of its size.
We now have three operating modes S, H and E – or standard, heavy and economy – for the Dash 10 SK220XDLC model.” Explaining the innovation in Kobelco’s Dash10 excavators, Derinbay says the range delivers exceptional fuel economy utilising features such as an energy recovery system – the first excavators in the world to do so. “The Dash-10 excavators were introduced in the Middle East in 2019 and immediately made their mark. They are equipped with our Komexs/Geoscan system, a highly developed remote monitoring system enabling end users and dealers to get detailed machine working reports. It also supports dealers and Kobelco service teams for remote programming and troubleshooting. “Kobelco also customises its models for the Middle East environment. For example, our SR mini excavators are fitted with Kobelcodesigned and patented iNDr technology which provides superior noise and dust reduction and improved cooling for better operation in GCC conditions,” Derinbay says. Along with economy and performance, the Middle East market demands exceptional robustness from its excavators, and while the manufacturers have risen to that challenge, they are now adding another layer of user friendliness to the most indemand construction machine in the form of technology and machine management. With the latest innovations finally starting to come to the region, the Middle East excavator customer can expect good times ahead.
WHEELED EXCAVATORS
ON A ROLL Hitachi is seeing keen interest for its wheeled excavator line-up in the Middle East, which has come as a surprise for the manufacturer and for its UAE dealer MECET. According to Piet van Bakergem, the regional market is maturing, leading to more jobs where wheeled kit is needed, such as in landscaping and cabling. There is also the greater economic sense of using a wheeled excavator in jobs that typically used a lot of manpower. “A task that required 20-30 people previously can now be done with five people or less and a mini excavator. And since the wheeled excavator is not such as big investment as say, the bigger earth-moving machines such as crawler excavators, it is selling
steadily. If there is a job to be done and it demands a wheeled excavator, then a contractor or operator is likely to buy a machine without the enormous time and preparation it takes to decide on a bigger purchase,” says Van Bakergem. Hitachi’s has a wide wheeled excavator range and reputation for quality, and he adds: “We have an entire range of wheeled diggers, from 18t to 22t in capacity. The 18t and the 20t models are the most in demand and are our best sellers, followed closely by the 22t model.”
Hitachi’s range of wheeled excavators for the region comprises four models,
starting from the 18t ZX17U5A with an operator’s canopy, right up the 22t ZX65USB-5A which comes with a cabin for the operator. The other models in the range have a choice of either cab or canopy. It sports the Japanese giant’s advanced TRIAS HX system technology, which has been adopted from hydraulic, electric and battery-powered excavators. Asa result of this technology, the ZH210LC-5 hybrid reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emission by up to 31% over conventional excavators with internal combustion engines.

LIFTING THE ECONOMY Throughout the economic bumps caused by Covid-19 in the last several months, the tower cranes, mobile cranes and crawler cranes in the Middle East have kept on lifting and the heavy flatbed movers and the selfpropelled modular transporters have kept on transporting their massive loads. It has not been easy for the lifting and heavy moving sector, which has had to take social distancing and all other precautions in their stride, but they have gone at it resolutely. One member of the sector that has exemplified this resoluteness is Al Faris, and in this edition of CMME Crane Report, we bring you an insight into how the regional lifting services giant has gone ahead with lifting and moving projects around the region. We also take a look at the tower cranes segment and reveal how the latest lifting equipment to catch on in the region is the spider crane. We also give safety its due with AMCS technologies’ innovative new anti-collision system and look at what the latest kit that the likes of HSC, Demag, Grove and Liebherr have brought in which will have their impact on job-sites soon.

A
feature of the Middle East’s crane space over the last few years has been the proliferation of the use of spider cranes. These small lifters present some unique advantages on job-sites with their ability to squeeze through narrow gaps while folded and then spread out and deploy with their outriggers splayed, lifting in a space that almost no other crane can reach. CMME encountered first-hand how these arachnoid machines ease and enable work when we visited the Dubai Mall extension project in mid-2020, where a spider crane provided by Dubai-based specialist rental company Spider Plus was key to the execution of a difficult indoor job. At the location, it was amply clear that the most vital piece of equipment making the build possible was the URW 706 mini spider crane, provided by Spider Plus. With its outriggers extended and its red boom rising high into the high ceiling, it looked every bit like a mechanical spider with its bent, spindly metal legs. Maged Tadros, construction manager for the project contractor ASGC, explains: “This project presents some unique challenges, not the least of which is accessibility. The main problem was how to get in the machinery and put it in place. This is what led to us choosing
Spider Plus and their spider cranes. We chose these cranes because they are the simplest and most efficient solutions for the lifting needs of this project. Here we are working in a covered, indoor space that is inaccessible to all other types of cranes out there. You cannot bring a mobile crane into this project as it is deep inside a building and there is no road. Also, there is a roof overhead, so that rules out using a tower crane. And, of course, a crawler crane is out of the question for accessing an indoor job-site.” Joe Duffy, executive manager, Spider Plus, adds: “The weight of a spider crane is also within the range that the floor can bear, so the crane can move around inside the project and effectively become an indoor mobile crane on site. Spider cranes are very easy to move and position, and also have no problems accessing all areas of the job-site and passing through doorways and under arches and beams. They just fit both the dimensions required for the project and the lifting needs perfectly.” The spider cranes that ASGC is using on the project are the URW 706 and its smaller sibling, the URW 506, both provided by Spider Plus who specialise in the rental and sales of spider cranes and glass lifting equipment. Duffy says the company has seen both hiring and buying of spider cranes increase “during the construction rush leading up to the Expo

2020 projects over the last few years.” With spider crane hire gaining popularity, regional rental heavyweight Johnson Arabia (JA) has also bolstered its fleet with them. JA’s fleet is among the largest in the region, comprising cranes of all types, sizes and capacities, with spiders among the newer additions. “Spider cranes enable companies to continue work on large projects and fast track certain challenging lifting and placement operations. Our spider mini crane series also works in conjunction with a lot of existing cranes. It’s an easy choice for companies for lifts in compact or hard-to-reach areas with the option of short- or long-term hires,” says the company’s MD, Martin Kirby. JA’s investment in spider cranes from Japanese brand Maeda is part of its vision to innovate and constantly bring new concepts to the market, says Kirby. “We demand the very best in reliability, performance but above all safety and cost effectiveness from our long-term partners to ensure the best support to our clients. The drive-in cinema made a comeback in 2020, and a large screen was assembled in the mall’s upper parking on level 3, underneath Ski Dubai’s slope, using spider cranes provided by us.” In Arjan, Maeda MC405 spider cranes provided by JA proved invaluable for structure erection works. “As this is a popular tourist spot, the developers needed to make sure that a large portion of the footpath was not occupied - so spider cranes were the perfect choice. Also, the job was short, and the crane had to be brought in and out quickly. So again, this made spider cranes the best choice, as transporting them from site to site or even within a site is quick.” At another rental biggie, AJI Heavy Equipment Rental, general manager Dean Jones reveals that investment has been made in diversifying into niche machines, such as spider cranes, where AJI chose Italian brand Jekko. “A big part of our main expansion since 2019 has been the introduction of mini cranes from Jekko, which is now among the world leaders in mini cranes due mainly to innovative solutions to traditional problems. We were appointed as the dealer for the UAE and have introduced both the popular SPX532 and the new SPX1280. More Jekko products will be introduced soon, and this year they will launch the new SPX650, which will further entrench the brand worldwide.” With the major rental companies identifying a definite demand trend for spider cranes in the regional market and bringing in the latest models from the best global manufacturers, it does looks like the spider crane has spun its web around the Middle East construction machinery sector.

o matter the state of its economy, the Middle East’s love affair with high-rise buildings continues. Even in a difficult year like 2020, Dubai still managed to complete 12 buildings over 200m - the most compared to any city in the world. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi is building supertalls like the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers and Fairmont Marina Abu Dhabi, even as Saudi Arabia continues reaching up towards the sky with buildings in projects such as King Abdullah Financial District. And where there are tall buildings, there are tower cranes. While these ingenious, versatile lifters have many more uses than building skyscrapers, those spindly structures are what they have come to be most associated with, especially in our region. And in our region, tower cranes have come to be most associated with NFT, where safety is now the first concern in the wake of the Convid-19 pandemic. through testing times last year at the height of the lockdowns. Describing the situation and NFT’s response, deputy general manager Nagham Al Zahlawi, says: “Covid-19 has delayed a lot of projects, put some major tenders on hold and, most importantly, delayed payments from clients. While construction was declared a vital sector in the GCC and so was not subject to lockdowns, sites continued to be operational and so did we. However, contractors had to adhere to strict standards for the working and living conditions of their workers, which lead to unaccounted increases in costs. They then tried to find other ways to mitigate this increase, such as re-negotiating contracts, sometimes even towards the end of projects.” For NFT, it has been a time of redoubled effort, explains Al Zahlawi. “Since day one of the pandemic, we haven’t stopped working. We assured our clients and employees that as long as it is safe to do so, we will be working. We tested our entire staff using the advanced testing facilities we are lucky to have in the UAE. We also re-allocated our employees so that there was only one person per office and produced in-house glass partitions for rooms with more than one person. “The biggest challenge during this crisis is ensuring business continuity and safety of employees simultaneously. Our QHSE department has been monitoring developments and NFT is strictly implementing all recommendations from trusted sources who are experts in the field - such as the UAE’s Department of Health, the WHO and Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The health and safety of our employees and customers are and have always been our number one priority. Early on, NFT formed a ‘Crises Management C o m m i t t e e’ comprising its top management, QHSE, administration, operations and HR departments. The job of
this committee is to follow up on the current Covid-19 developments, remain in contact with UAE officials and with NFT’s sister companies overseas, and come up with measures in line with official recommendations. Meanwhile, NFT has got the full support of Potain during this difficult time. “The manufacturer’s support has not wavered and even when the factory was closed for a few months, the Potain team working from home in France was on daily video calls with us to see how we can mitigate the production time lost. However, with the factory in full swing again, orders have been placed and we can safely say that business is back to a new normal. Manitowoc even managed to launch the new MCT 275 to its dealers in a virtual launch in July.” NFT has also ordered the latest Potain models to update its fleet, such as Potain’s first hydraulic luffers for its European and Asian range, the MRH125, MRH175, MCH125 and MCH175, which have reduced out of service radii, quicker set up times and low maintenance for wire ropes. Meanwhile at Wolffkran, Jeff Watson, operations director, and Rinju Ravindran, regional sales manager, Wolffkran Arabia, say that while they mainly supply to the UAE, Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the pandemic’s travel restrictions made them focus mainly on the UAE. “We’re still actively connecting with clients and planning for future projects. The challenge now is in acquiring new projects. The rental sector is seeing a mild benefit because people are choosing to rent rather than buy to avoid incurring long-term maintenance costs,” says Ravindran. Safety remains the top priority for Wolffkran Arabia, and Watson adds: “We always work with high safety standards. Our entire operations team is trained at the factory to erect and dismantle our tower cranes, making sure everything from the foundation to the crane radius is assessed for safety. In the almost 15 years we have been here, we’ve never had any major

incident in the whole region.” Speaking of new models and projects, he adds: “The 235 B is a new Wolffkran launch and we also introduced a 6x6m cross section for our tower cranes. The ongoing Burj Royale project is our latest and we have a few more in the pipeline. You will see the Wolff red in the skyline and will instantly know which new projects we are a part of.” The new Wolff 235 B luffing jib model aims to save time for contractors with a design that speeds up assembly and maintenance. Wolffkran says the new model was developed to replace the popular Wolff 224 B in its stable and ranks between the hydraulic Wolff 166 B and the next larger Wolff 275 B in the lower load moment range, fulfilling the demands of construction sites with a high volume of concreting work on high-rise buildings. Wolffkran adds that the premise behind developing the new Wolff 235 B was that the faster a crane is ready for operation, the more cost effective it is. Wouter van Loon, product manager at Wolffkran, explains: “The Wolff 235 B was developed in close collaboration with Wolffkran customers, who have decades of experience in handling luffing cranes

A new single trolley is now available as an option, which features a manual single-double reeving change by the operator directly from the ground. The 11LC range comes with new drives in the hoisting winch and trolley, which give linear movements thanks to attached potentiometers. This makes it possible to easily move and precisely position sensitive loads. Also, a new version of the 18kW hoist mechanism has been added to the 6t versions of the crane, requiring less power supply while maintaining drum capacity and speed features. For reduced speed lifts, a power lift system comes as standard and improves the load diagram by 10%. For higher speeds, optional 24kW and 37kW hoist motors feature the Effi-Plus system which significantly increases the hoisting and lowering speeds for light loads without increasing power or consumption.

FRENCH CRANE TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST’S NEW DCS 61-S ANTICOLLISION SYSTEM KEEPS JOB-SITES SAFER BY PREVENTING HIGH COLLISIONS TOWER CRANE AND MOBILE CRANE COMPONENTS
F
rench crane safety technology specialist AMCS technologies has introduced its new DCS 61-S device, which it says is more than an anti-collision system for lifting machines. The company, whose flagship products are anti-collision and zoning systems, says the DCS 61-S, their new device, can manage anti-collision between tower cranes and many other machines on a job-site. “It is an evolving product, which has been designed in such a way as to integrate new functionalities such as anticollision management between tower
cranes and mobile cranes. The DCS 61-S automatically detects the movements of the mobile machine and integrates the control of tower cranes,” says AMCS. The systems placed on tower and mobile cranes are connected via a radio network and constantly exchange all sensor information. Due to mobile antennas, every DCS 61-S connected in the anti-collision network knows the positions of the mobile crane’s elements at any moment. When the mobile cranes move and reposition themselves in a different area to work, the tower crane devices automatically detect their movement and positions.
The device calculates in real time and in 3D the distances between each element of the cranes (including the position of the cabin) as well as the movement speeds. This is to intervene on the cranes control mechanism to ensure a slowing down, followed by a complete immobilization of the tower crane at a pre-set distance from the mobile crane. For the mobile crane, the device emits an increasingly loud audible signal when approaching an interfering tower crane or a prohibited overflight area. The solution deployed by AMCS technologies has proven successful and demonstrated its effectiveness as well as
11 its necessity. Indeed, to avoid the many incidents that can arise due to the increase in the use of mobile machinery on site, the DCS 61-S responds to safety and work issues. The system adapts perfectly to immediate decision-making and daily jobsite needs while ensuring productivity and safety with a single product. The DCS 61-S for mobile cranes is as easy as ever to install and program thanks to a screen installed in the crane operator’s cabin that provides him with all the information useful for operating the machine in real time.

hen it comes to lattice boom crawler cranes, the HSC Cranes brand has always been among the most noted in its sector, both worldwide and in the Middle East. Not only does it come with the reputation for Japanese quality, but the HSC range also covers a wide spread of lifting capacities and is a tried and tested product in the market. Wim Aernouts, director, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET), the regional HSC dealer, explains that HSC’s range in the Middle East goes from the 55t lift capacity SCX550E at the low end to the 550t capacity 6000SLX at the top end. He adds that while MECET sees more volumes in the lower and medium capacity models,
such as the 120t-capacity SCX1200-3, the 500t-capacity 6000SLX has also achieved sales in the region. Globally, though, the recent talk about HSC Cranes concerns two models at the two ends of its capacity spectrum. The first is the 55t-capacity SCX550-3 delivered to a Dutch customer, the first of the model delivered in Europe; while the second is the SCX1800A-3 model delivered to New Zealand-based civil construction company HEB Construction, part of Vinci Construction. The SCX550-3 was delivered to Cluysenaar Kraanverhuur in the Netherlands at the end of September last year by the local HSC distributor Hitachi Construction Machinery Netherlands. According to the customer, the crane “seems indestructible and will last for years without any problems”. The first deployment of the new 55t
crawler was in Lelystad, where the SCX550-3 lifted precast concrete elements for newbuild houses. The heaviest parts weighed almost 6t. The crane is used here with a 37m boom. Cluysenaar bought this HSC with a full main boom, whose maximum length is 49m. It is also possible to use the 6m jib that Cluysenaar already had. In total, the SCX550-3 has 18.6t of counterweight, consisting of two basic parts with a block on top left and right. The base plate weighs 8.7t. The second part of the counterweight is placed on top of it and weighs 6.4t. The block of counterweight at the top left weighs 1.8t and the block on the right 1.7t. The counterweight eventually measures 3.2m wide. The tail swing radius is a short at 3,850mm, making the crane ideal for tight locations. Two Eco hoisting winches are fitted as standard with free fall function, each with a maximum line pull of 63.7kN. The hoisting cable on the drums of the main winches has a diameter of 22mm and a length of 324m. Meanwhile, in New Zealand, the

National plant manager Grant Moffat at the contractor HEB, says: “We chose this model because we were looking for a 150-180t crawler crane suitable for piling operations. It can be difficult to find a crane that is heavy-duty enough, and with the high line pull required for piling works, without compromising on lifting ability. This crane does it all. We chose the bigger winches and larger 28mm diameter rope, which are other key things we look for from a foundation construction point of view. The quality of this crane for the price is right up there. It delivers great value.” HSC says the SCX1800A-3 has been designed to provide high lifting capability within a compact body. The main boom and crane jib combination has a reach of up to 75m + 31m (the maximum main boom is up
to 84m), covering a wide working area and streamlining operations on job-sites. Greater lifting performance can be achieved with an auxiliary two sheaves option, if required. The engine has an energy-efficient control system for lower fuel consumption while the crane’s eco winch mode allows for high line speeds under light loads without having to increase engine speed, which also helps to limit fuel consumption and noise. Grant points out that assembly and transportability are also impressive on the model, which is “very quick and easy to put together”. The total transportation weight is a low 40.8t, including the lower boom, winch rope and mast, while remaining within a 3.2m transportation width. The variable counterweight charts also deliver more flexibility, Grant adds.

AL FARIS ON THE CLIMB
THE REGIONAL CRANE SERVICES AND HEAVY LIFT AND MOVE SPECIALIST HAS DEMONSTRATED ITS PROWESS IN RECENT MONTHS BY EXECUTING SEVERAL DIFFICULT PROJECTS IN THE UAE AND THE REGION
A
round this time last year, Dubai-headquartered regional heavy lifting and moving services giant, Al Faris, placed an order for 69 Liebherr cranes. This further cemented the ties between the heavyweight Middle Eastern company and the crane behemoth whose products Al Faris makes heavy use of, while also providing further testimony that the homegrown company has built its reputation and track record of excellence on top class equipment. The order also capped a very successful six months for Al Faris leading up to it, while also pointing the way forward to more successes ahead, as we have since observed. Looking back several months to September 2019, a Liebherr LTM 1500 all-terrain crane is making its way through the Jordanian countryside to a remote job-site. It’s mission: to erect wind turbine towers. Al Faris had said at that time: “After careful consideration and calculations the Liebherr LTM 1500, 500t all-terrain crane was selected as the most suitable to safely carry out the heavy lifts. The crane was mobilised to Jordan from our branch in Saudi Arabia along with three of our well-trained staff members, showcasing our capabilities and strength to cater to any projects in the entire Middle East region. Execution was safely carried out by
our trained operators. The loads varied from 64t to 90t. Our 550t mobile crane was used with main boom operations.” As is usual with the company, all surveys, planning, technical support documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house prior to job execution, which helped in organising all activities smoothly and kept delays to a minimum. A couple of months after the Jordanian project came another noteworthy project in the energy sector, albeit this time in petroleum energy in the UAE. Al Faris provided complete logistics services, from loading to transportation, for more than 15 oversized components of an oil refinery project, which were moved from Dubai’s Jebel Ali port to a storage yard at Dubai World Central. Al Faris used 12-axle Goldhofer hydraulic trailers as well as self-propelled modular transporters (PST/SL-E trailers) to move the loads, and finally offloaded them using an Enerpac SBL900 gantry. The refinery column’s three sections were up to 11m in height, 32m long and 10m wide, and weighed up to 315t. The biggest challenge in the project was to find a route practical and feasible enough to transport the loads. An elaborate route survey was done, studying all technicalities and required modifications. During the transportation, a stretch of Dubai’s main highway, Sheikh Zayed Road, was completely

blocked for 30 minutes to make way for the trailers, which were accompanied by 4-6 police escorts. Al Faris obtained all official permissions and clearances for the move and route modifications beforehand, including from Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority. “All surveys, planning, technical support documentation, execution plans and schedules were prepared in-house prior to job execution. This helped organise all activities smoothly with minim delays. Execution was safely carried out by our trained operators. We also provide a strong commitment and focus to adhere to the best QHSE practices on-site, which is discussed in detail with the client prior to the commencement of operations,” the company had said at the time of the project. More petroleum sector projects followed as 2020 began, with Al Faris transporting 19 heavy vessels over a distance of 150km for the expansion of a crude oil production facility in Abu Dhabi. This project was completed in different stages over a period of three months and Al Faris provided its client with a complete solution for loading these vessels from different manufacturer’s locations to Hamriyah and Jebel Ali ports in the UAE where they were shipped to neighbouring Abu Dhabi. Al Faris then received these vessels at Abu Dhabi’s Mussafah port and land transported as well as offloaded them at the client site. Meanwhile, projects in construction and infrastructure were also being executed apace. Towards the end of 2019, Al Faris lifted and placed heavy structural elements on the UAE pavilion build site at the Dubai Expo. Using a Liebherr LR 1000 crawler crane with 156m main boom and Liebherr LTM 1750 9.1 mobile crane with S/L and luffer, the Al Faris team lifted 42 steel structural elements in total at the falcon-inspired UAE pavilion structure, which they then placed and installed in their places. due to adjacent ongoing projects, the restricted time and area for the assembly and dismantling of the cranes and a long working radius of 132m along with strong winds, says Al Faris. Selection of the right lifting gear was of utmost importance as the structures had to be lifted at a given specific angle. Also, steel mats had to be fabricated for
maintaining ground pressure to meet the site requirements. “This project was completed in stages. We provided our client with a complete solution for lifting and installation of structural steel elements of length varying from 24m to 46m. The weight of each unit ranged from 8t to 55t. After careful consideration and study, the 1000t Liebherr LR 1000 crawler crane was used due to the long working radius required for the installation,” a spokesperson explains. For the final stage of the lifting project, Al Faris used its Liebherr 750t all-terrain mobile crane to lift and install the oculus structure at the centre of the UAE pavilion’s roof top. Early 2020 saw Al Faris execute another unique project, loading, transporting and discharging a tugboat and pontoons from Sharjah’s Hamriyah port to a location on the Hatta dam as part of the Hatta Pumped Storage Hydro Power Plant (PSHPP) in Dubai. Al Faris says it provided the client a complete solution for loading the vessels from the customer’s shipping yard at the port to a location near Hatta dam as a temporary changeover location, and then to the final location at the Hatta Jetty. These critical jobs also involved change of equipment at different stages based on requirement. The task was a challenging one, with some of the hazards being steep angles up to 23 degrees uphill and 24 degrees downhill; electric power lines with restricted heights; the need to manoeuvre extremely narrow roads; and bottle neck turns. After careful study, Al Faris selected its Goldhofer hydraulic multi axle and self-propelled trailers for the move, with up to eight axle lines used. Lifting duties were handled by Al Faris’ Liebherr 100t and 250t mobile cranes when the load needed to be placed. The project was completed safely and without a hitch. Building on its success and dedication Al Faris started operations in Iraq in 2021 began, expanding into the country with an all-new fleet of cranes and equipment but with the same time-tested expertise.
