EUROPEAN AWAY DAYS
ASSISTANT EDITOR MARK DOWDALL mark.dowdall@cpitrademedia.com +971 4 375 5496
It’s been a busy month here at CMME with two visits to Europe to check out two of the biggest international events on the construction machinery calendar. Both Volvo Days in Eskilstuna, Sweden and Bobcat’s Demo Days just outside of Prague returned for the first time in a couple of years, welcoming back media, dealers and customers to what turned out to be a fine celebration of machinery and its far-reaching international community. Whilst an honour to receive an invite to such formidable events it was particularly gratifying to be the only attendee from the Middle East to be welcomed to the home of Volvo CE. That was before being part of a select few journalists that made the trip to the region of Dobříš for Bobcat’s Demo Days event. The enthusiasm at both was palpable and there is something quite inspiring about being around a group of people that have been brought together, to a sometimes more reticent part of the globe, one way or another through their love of machinery and equipment. It’s very easy to get caught up in one’s own bubble or become blinkered by a certain perspective. The idea of writing about machinery without actually going out there to touch and feel and drive such machines has never been something that has sat well with me. It is why I jumped at the chance to go to go to both events within the month and why I am already looking forward to my next jaunt to see some live machinery, wherever that may be. What was really noticeable from both events is the sense of community that is out there. It was clear listening to operators talk about the machines that they drive every single day that they were enjoying
themselves. The enthusiasm that showed explicitly on the faces of employees, in turn, rubbed off on the army of assembled media and we each got to test an array of machines. I personally got the chance to put the newly-updated Volvo L350H Wheel Loader to work as well as try out a firm Bobcat favourite in the Middle East; the S450 Skid-Steer Loader. The other thing to notice, was that when I got talking to other people in the industry from Sweden or Norway or the UK, certain things regarding electromobility or sustainability, or safety came up time and time again. Yes, regulations can vary between countries and some may be a little further along the road in their own particular journey. In all cases, though, the interest in pursuing these themes was as strong from one place to the next. It would be amiss of me to say that I was not able to take something away from my European counterparts’ approach not only to machinery but how it is reported on in the region. I look forward to more of these conversations. As the heat in Dubai turns up, however, I am already dreaming of my next test drive in a Skid Steer. There is just one thing…where do I sign up?

Acciona powers tower crane with portable 100kW hydrogen-based generator ACCIONA has operated a tower crane with a portable zero-emission electricity generator based on hydrogen, the first of its kind in the construction sector, said the company. Up until now, a common solution in projects where it was not possible to connect to the grid was to use generators powered by fossil fuels, mainly diesel. The company used the prototype generator, however, which has a power range of 100 kW and can feed auxiliary equipment and site machinery, on a construction site for the new Norte III Penitentiary Complex in San Sebastián, northern Spain. The project was awarded last year to a joint venture involving ACCIONA, and the crane will continue to operate for the next
three months with the help of the hydrogen-based electricity generator. “The development and validation of this first prototype of a 100 kW portable electricity generator based on hydrogen is part of the demonstration phase of the ‘Everywh2ere’ innovation project, in which the company is participating together with another 12 European partners,” said Acciona. The project, financed by the European Commission through the FCH JU (Fuel Cell Hydrogen Joint Undertaken) initiative, consists of the development of portable generators that use hydrogen instead of oil-based products to generate energy. In the process, this helps reduce noise and fumes created by current electricity generators.

supporting Kurk Construction, contractor of the project, in this large-scale development by supplying Raimondi cranes. The flattops, sold in September 2021 and erected in December by our experienced team, have good load capacity as well as ease of erection,” stated Gokhan Ibrahimiye, Director General, Akem Group. The MRT159s, operating onsite with a maximum lifting
capacity of 8 tonnes, have all been installed with jib lengths of 65m and tower heights ranging between 45m and 124m. The two tallest flattops, standing at 112.4m and 124m, have been anchored to the building, while the remaining cranes are freestanding. “The MRT159 remains one of the best-selling cranes in the region thanks to its lighter components and its excellent tip load of 1.8kg at maximum radius. Additionally, having the machines arrive onsite with all the main elements already preassembled and ropes passed represents an added value for jobsites of this nature as they reduce installation procedures times,” Ibrahimiye added. The two MRT144s-8 tonne, currently standing at 36m and 55.3m, are at work for the construction of Empire Square, located in the centre of the new residential development. The six flattops, lifting all types of construction materials, will remain onsite for 18 additional months.

Ammann has introduced its intelligent software update called ACEPRO – Ammann Intelligent Compact Expert, designed to reduce compaction costs for soil and asphalt compactors. The system, which is an enhancement of their Ammann Compaction Expert (ACE) range provides “absolute compaction measurement” and automatically adjusts frequency and amplitude based on those measurements and the compaction targets. This helps improve efficiency and quality by sending optimal force into the
ground, the company said. ACEPRO is fully integrated into the machine’s central display so no additional display is required and clear sight lines are maintained from the cab to the jobsite. The manufacturer added that the real-time information available would reduce unnecessary passes of the machine, preventing extra fuel costs and machine wear. The system is available on Ammann tandem roller ARP 95 used in asphalt compaction, and single drum rollers ARS 110 and ARS 130 used on soil and aggregates.

LIEBHERR RAISES SKYSCRAPER IN SINGAPORE
T
wo new Liebherr luffing jib cranes are currently raising a 48-storey office building in the centre of Singapore where, for the first time ever, they are using a 24 HC 1000 tower system to climb within the building due to challenges presented by local regulations and the layout of the site. Liebherr’s 710 HC-L 32/64 Litronic cranes which are working on the construction of the Central Boulevard Towers will reach their maximum tower height of 245 metres in just ten climbing stages, according to the manufacturer. Although internal climbing systems have been a successful part of high-rise building construction for a number of years now this is the first time the 24 HC 1000 tower system is being used. The cranes started work in November 2020. Back then, the cranes belonging to the fleet of the Kim Soon Lee company were assembled freestanding at a tower height of around 40 metres. The Central Boulevard Towers are being built right next to the historic “Lau Pa Sat” building, also known as “Telok Ayer Market”. One of the two new towers will be approx. 241 metres in height. It’s for this part of the project that the two 710 HC-Ls, with jib lengths of 40 and 45 metres, are being used. One of the key benefits the climbing system brings to this project is fewer climbing stages and less downtime. “The number of times a crane has to climb impacts how long the downtime is for customers,” says Liebherr Tower Cranes project manager, Eric Konijn. “We were able to offer our customer a solution with ten climbing stages, which saves them valuable
time and consequently money.” According to Liebherr one climbing stage takes about two hours, so the cranes stand still for as short a time as possible. In addition, there are significantly fewer storeys to reinforce, which also has a positive impact on cost efficiency. Due to the amount of guying that is legally required, and the resulting significantly increased costs, having the cranes climb completely on the outside of the building wasn’t a viable option and there wasn’t enough space on site to use exterior climbing cranes, says Liebherr. The high-performance Liebherr 710 HC-L model was chosen because of the tight conditions on site, and the project’s heavy load and handling capacity requirements. The 710 HC-L has a maximum lifting capacity of 64 tonnes and is the largest luffing jib crane Liebherr offers. It can easily lift and precisely position the pre-cast concrete parts, weighing up to 30 tonnes, which are needed for the skyscraper’s construction. When completed, the 48-storey tower will accommodate office and retail space. The Central Boulevard Towers project also includes a second tower, which is 16 storeys high. One of the highlights is an urban “sky park” with green spaces. Small recesses are to be incorporated into the greenery as meeting areas, and the park will also include a jogging track for employees to do their laps on. The two luffing jib cranes will be working on this site, which borders on high-traffic roads, for several more months. They will continue to climb skywards section by section, until they reach their maximum height, where they will tower over the surrounding high-rises.

HARD HITTERS COMMENT JULY AUGUS 2022 T 2019
THE POWER SHIFT IS BATTERY POWERED EQUIPMENT THE FUTURE OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY, ASKS JEFF BENNETT, GENERAL MANAGER, HUSQVARNA CONSTRUCTION
T
he construction industry has been an integral part of the UAE’s economy, contributing to 6.4 percent of the country’s GDP. Keeping up with the global market trends, the industry now has been going through a significant change. For example, construction professionals in the past heavily relied on diesel-powered and petrol machinery. However, with the advent of electrified construction machinery and availability of modern lithium-ion batteries with high energy density for small as well as large vehicles, we are witnessing steady progress towards usage of batterification in construction equipment for building resilient infrastructure – be it for commercial, residential, geotechnical or infrastructure construction. The shift from traditional tools to battery powered equipment can benefit the industry with zero
emissions, increased efficiencies, and lower costs. The flexibility to use battery power at urban job sites and in noise or pollution-sensitive environments like hospitals and schools, along with the potential to reduce hazardous emissions, has made battery power impossible to ignore. The rise in popularity is especially visible in interior demolition, where batterypowered tools have revolutionized timetables. Small home to large interior projects also benefit from the quiet operations and reduced dust emissions. Steadily we will witness electric equipment becoming the norm as machines are now designed and proven to overcome the main concerns voiced by sceptical buyers and construction professionals around energy capacity, performance and price. Advancements in construction machinery are mainly focused on equipment that will help drive the change in the industry with more environmentally friendly and efficient ways of working. Operatorcentric solutions focused on improving the health &
safety of construction professionals will be a norm at future construction sites. According to the global forecast for the construction industry, over 60% of the global construction activity will be undertaken in emerging markets by 2025, up from 35%. The volume of construction output will grow by more than 70% to $15 trillion worldwide by 2025, with an expansion rate of 3.6 percent every year between 2018 and 2022. Additionally, by 2050, experts suggest that there will be two billion additional city dwellers and hence sustainable urbanisation will pose a major construction challenge and the industry must strive to find innovative new products and solutions, to contribute to building better cities. Batterification in construction products is an example of such advancement, helping with less damage to the environment and more efficiency at the project site. Battery-powered hand tools, and other lighter-duty tools and equipment have been used on jobsites for years. However, they were
13 typically viewed as options for intermittent rather than continuous use because of its limitations when it came to performance, battery life and/or charging times. Advances in equipment design and battery technology has enabled enhanced capabilities and more efficient power generation and utilisation as well as opportunities to power larger construction tools. The prospect is intriguing given the benefits: • Zero emissions • Low noise • No fuel costs • Ability to work indoors and in remote areas where fueling is a challenge • Reduced maintenance compared to enginepowered models Research also suggests that battery operated machinery can be economically viable for the construction industry. Not only do they provide better manoeuvrability, flexibility and safety, batterypowered construction equipment provide business with smart tools that give efficiency, accuracy, and speed for all its employees.
When it comes to the pricing point, contractors and sub-contractors should consider the total cost of ownership when evaluating their decision. Electric powered machinery offers the benefits of fuel savings and extended component life because of not having an engine which ultimately results in reduced maintenance costs and losses incurred due to unscheduled downtime. Additionally, according to ‘The Future Home Report’ by Eurocell, 49% of consumers responded they would be more likely to buy or rent an ecoconscious home, putting the pressure on construction companies to emit less, pollute less and build the world we want to live in a sustainable manner. With a lot of emphasis on sustainable development from the general public and government initiatives promoting the same including UAE Centennial 2071, and the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, having a zero-emission machine to do the job can give contractors the edge to bid confidently for projects with sustainability targets or indoor work.Husqvarna Construction is taking the lead to manoeuvre from petrol to battery
powered equipment with their next generation battery power cutter. With the K1 Pace customers can expect power and performance equivalent to petrol-powered cutters with all the additional benefits battery powered equipment brings to both operators and the environment. The PACE battery system can be utilised for more machines as the battery-powered family expands. In addition to the power cutters and battery system, diamond blades in 12” and 14” (300 and 350mm) have been optimised for battery operation. The machine is also equipped with X-Halt® brake function capable of stopping the rotation of a blade in a fraction of a second for enhanced safety. The innovations in this industry clearly represent advancement. In the near future, the industry will witness a surge in demand for battery-powered machinery as both an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable solution for construction equipment. By the end of this decade, we believe full-sized construction machinery will likely be a mix of hybrid and electric.

lobally, over 50% of the world’s population lives in urban areas today and by 2045, the world’s urban population is set to increase by 1.5 times to 6 billion. These latest figures from the World Bank show just how quickly our cities are growing. As they do, this rapid speed and scale of urbanisation brings with it a range of challenges from providing affordable housing to meeting basic service needs in terms of transport and other infrastructure. Throughout the course of this evolution, Aerial Work Platforms (AWPs) can be expected to play a growing role both during, and post construction, where infrastructure maintenance needs in big, sprawling cities become more necessary than ever before. AWPs offer an affordable option for working at height as they are easy to operate and transport, and suitable for a range of applications in different sectors. Although the nature of performing operations at heights can vary based on specific industry needs such as being able to work on rough terrain in the construction industry or indoor in the facility management industry, with more and more construction, remodeling and maintenance tasks shifting to crowded cities and indoors, AWPs are
increasingly having to conform to meet noise and air pollution requirements…and electrification is helping to achieve just that. Against that backdrop Electric AWPs are estimated to register a growth rate of about 9.5% through 2028 a new Global Market Insights report has revealed. In the Middle East, although not always the first part of the world to pioneer new technology, manufacturers are seeing several trends as the adoption of electric technology steadily increases in the region. According to Mirco Negri, senior product manager at JLG, there is a clear direction in the types of applications and environments that people are now looking to use electric access equipment. “JLG has historically offered a wide range of electrified solutions which traditionally have focused on indoor and industrial applications. However, currently we are facing growing customer interest in electrified solutions also for outdoor construction applications,” he says. “With the final objective to support our customer needs we are working on providing more electrified solutions also in product categories that are traditionally equipped with an IC engine. We can already see one example in that sense with the recently launched EC-booms (Electric Construction booms).” Traditionally customers may have looked at the upfront costs of a machine rather than

the value that it provides over time. With electric machinery, however, the long-term benefits and value that it adds are becoming increasingly evident to users in the region. At JLG, for example, one of its flagship products, and winner of ‘Electric Machinery of the Year’ at the recent Construction Machinery Middle East awards: The All-Electric DaVinci AE1932 Scissor Lift requires almost zero maintenance and runs on a single lithium-ion battery that can last up to 10-years. As a result, Negri says rather than trying to convince users of its value, “customers are actually asking for electric machinery, a trend which is checking here in the Middle East.” He explains: “Rental companies are considering more and more the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) argument before taking the purchase decision. Some companies more than others, but in general there is more attention on total cost of ownership than what there was some years ago. “In that sense DaVinci scissor is a game changer product because it is designed with the thinking of reducing to a minimum the machine maintenance requirements consequently minimising the overall total cost of ownership of the machine” Of course, despite growing interest in electrified products there is “always a trade off” to consider between available technologies and having a product price that is acceptable for the job to be done. “We plan to keep working with our channel partners and customers in order to provide the right products to be successful in the market,” Negri adds.
For many manufacturers a trade off exists between offering the best available technologies and having a product price that is acceptable for the job being done.
Other manufacturers continue to make sure they are well positioned for when the electric boom truly takes off. Dingli have just launched a new range of all electric scissor lifts with no hydraulic oil required including five models in the range from 5m to 8m working heights. The company continues to develop new models and power options, and in the 3rd and 4th quarter of this year Dingli will be introducing a full range of Hybrid boom lifts, with telescopic and articulated models available. Lithium batteries and

Deutz diesel engines have been designed into these exciting new offerings. In addition to the hybrid and all-electric models. Dingli will be expanding its telescopic boom range with 36m, 41m and 44m working heights available. These models will be available in the 4th quarter of 2022. Speaking about the steady growth in demand for electric MEWPS general manager of Dingli Middle East, Peter Ellis says the continued development of alternative power sources such as Lithium batteries and hydrogen technology has now made these options a viable alternative to diesel engines on job sites in the region. “Dingli offers a 4-year warranty on their lithium batteries,” he says. “In the Middle East region, wet batteries will fail on average between 14 and 16 months. Lithium will last three times longer, with a speed charger option, lithium batteries can be fully recharged in three hours compared to eight hours with wet batteries. Importantly lithium batteries will last up to 30% longer between charges than wet batteries. This will allow electric MEWPS to be used where historically diesel power was the only viable option.” Although availability is a major issue in the industry currently with long lead times and price increases due to increases in buying materials, the company says it is able to offer manufacturing lead times of 35 days from date of order with competitive pricing across their full range of products. Raw materials and components continue to cost more for manufacturers, forcing many to increase their prices by 5% this
17 year, says Ellis, yet up until now Dingli have managed to avoid any price hike and have stuck to their pricing plan for 2022. “Our customers are looking for products that can give them a better return on their investment,” he explains. “Dingli are able to offer large scissors with 22m, 28m and 32m working heights, Lithium batteries and deutz diesel power options are available, and these products are commanding great rental returns currently. Historically warehouse construction developments were 18m working height. They are now building them higher, typically 22m and above.” Although the recent Global Insights Report revealed that the Boom lifts segment held over 70% of the global AWP market share in 2021 this does not ring true for everyone in the industry. Michael Wright, sales director at Snorkel Middle East says: “In the Middle East we did not experience this. In fact, booms accounted for no more than 25% of total sales during 2021. However, Snorkel did receive orders for around 80 various booms in the Middle East last year, and we’ve seen a big increase in enquiries for booms with reaches of 60 feet and over during 2022.” Currently in Europe and the Middle East Snorkel offers the SL range rough-terrain scissors and certain articulated booms with lithium-ion batteries as an alternative power source to diesel engines. It is the A38E however that continues to be a favorite in the Middle East as there is still no equivalent or substitute for it. The A38E is compact and offers both telescopic and
Although making up only a quarter of total sales, Snorkel receivd orders for around 80 various booms in the Middle East last year with a big increase for booms with reaches of 60 feet and over in 2022.
articulating boom features making it highly agile. With there being a large amount of shopping malls in the Middle East there is a big demand for them, which makes them popular with most rental companies and facilities management companies. “Most customers in the Middle East still look at machine cost, then reliability and ease of use,” Wright adds. “Fuel is still exceptionally cheap here compared to Europe, so investment in electric AWPs is still at an early stage. There are some
local municipalities that are starting to specify electric machines only, so this will encourage change. There are also a few forward-thinking companies that are looking into it, with some owners leading by example and switching to electric cars.” Of course, given the global macroenvironment should fuel prices continue to rise this will likely raise demand for electric machinery even here in the Middle East. Quality Equipment Rental’s (QER) general manager, Ashfaq Hussein makes this point that many of his customers have turned to electric recently because the cost of diesel makes it a more attractive option. He adds: “Our electric machines are mostly used for indoor jobs mainly construction of museums, airports, hospitals etc. We are seeing a big demand for electric spiders over the past couple of years. We have added spiderlifts, spider cranes and electric scissors in our fleet in the past two to three years and all these products are seeing an upward trend.” It is important to note that urban settings are a relatively new phenomenon in human history. The UN estimates 2007 was the year when, for the first time, more people in the world lived in urban than in rural areas. As the global energy crunch puts strain on traditional methods of powering our machinery and equipment, expect the fully electric and hybrid concepts to gain in popularity with increasingly favourable cost of ownership and environmental benefits that aid the transition to a more urbanised world.
INTERNATIONAL LAUNCH
LGMG LAUNCHES FOUR ELECTRIC TELESCOPIC BOOM LIFTS LGMG will launch four electric telescopic boom lifts for the international market,- T20JE, T22JE, T26JE and T28JE models - all of which are powered by lithium batteries and offer a large capacity, low noise and zero emissions. It follows the earlier release last month of the manufacturer’s H-series diesel-powered series. The new electric booms provide work heights of 21.8m to 29.8m and outreaches of 16.6m, 17m, 22.3m and 22.5m respectively. A variety of charging modes are available, as standard, to meet the needs of fast and standard charging and to match
different working conditions and facilities. The charging pile port is optional, and the models’ large capacity battery allows for 2-3 days of work. The four telescopic lifts are all high-capacity models with a 300 (unrestricted)/450kg (restricted) dual capacity design. They come equipped with a 2.44m tripleentry gate as standard, which can accommodate up to three operators, in the restricted zone, and more materials. The models are also four-wheel drive with three steering modes: four-wheel steer, front-wheel steer, crab steer, and one-touch wheel alignment. The units have a
floating oscillating axle and a maximum tilt angle of 5° tilt and 45% gradeability. This allows the wheels to grip the ground when passing hard uneven terrain. Accompanying all of
this is an on-board diagnostic troubleshooting system. Wang Yuling, head of LGMG’s overseas application engineering department, commented, “For our customers, low carbon and energy-saving electric equipment means more rental opportunities and lower operating costs. LGMG’s lithium battery telescopic boom lifts have been launched in China and are well recognised by customers. The launch of these four new models in overseas markets will fill the gap in LGMG’s electric telescopic boom product line in overseas markets, making LGMG’s product line more complete.”

lthough it was a drizzly summer’s morning in Sweden as Volvo CE’s trusted and skilled operators poured out of their range of light, medium and heavy-duty excavators, concluding a memorable machinery demonstration, the mood amongst the gallery of people and journalists who had gathered from the world of construction was anything but damp. The applause told its own story. Amidst the range of machinery and the buoyant music that sounded out into the cool northern air, the central theme of the event: “Change Starts Here”, could already be seen; not only through a large on-site banner being held high into the air by a L200H High Lift wheel loader, but through the series of wonderfully choreographed dances of excavators, loaders, dumpers and pavers which had already provided a highlight by showing that anything is really possible when it comes to construction machinery. All of this was happening in the charming town of Eskilstuna, about 100-km west of Stockholm and the same place where Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) began life in 1832. The Volvo Customer centre continues to upgrade; most recently a test and demonstrations centre was built for electronic autonomous transport solutions, which Volve CE said was the world’s first of its

kind. At Volvo Days, this cohort of journalists were among the first to see this new centre which includes a secure track for full-electric, automated and teleoperated machines with charging infrastructures and 5G connectivity, a control and training room building, a spectator stand and training area for the Volvo Co-Pilot assist functions. It is an impressive addition to a facility which spans more than 75 hectares and houses more than 80 machines with the ability to demonstrate them all, highlighting the full extent of their potential.
“We say change starts here,” says Melker Jernberg, Volvo CE’s president in his opening presentation. “I believe that in the coming five years we will see more things happening in our industry than in the past 50 years. That doesn’t mean that nothing has happened for fifty years but what we are in now is an extreme situation. I have underestimated the speed and the need for change, both from a sustainability perspective but also from the technology side and what is possible to do. We are learning things every day.”
NEW LAUNCH
VOLVO CE SUPPORTS ELECTRIC TRANSFORMATION WITH APP FOR REMOTE MONITORING Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced a remote monitoring app called EMMA to help operators and fleet mangers manage the charging process more efficiently and maximise uptime. EMMA (Electric Machine Management Application) enables customers to remotely check the charge and location of their Volvo electric machines and receive alerts wherever they are, accessible on customers’ smartphones, tablets and laptops. It has been designed to improve the operation of any of Volvo CE’s five electric machines – the ECR25 Electric compact excavator and the L25 Electric compact wheel loader, which
were unveiled in 2019, and the more recent ECR18 Electric and EC18 Electric excavators and the L20 Electric wheel loader, which were announced last year. It can also be used for any upcoming addition to Volvo’s portfolio of electric machines. “At Volvo CE, we are dedicated to supporting customers through the electric transformation,” says Toni Hagelberg, Head of Sustainable Power at Volvo CE. “Electric machines have opened up the possibility for a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable work environment, but they also require a shift in our way of working. EMMA ensures customers have real-time
information at their fingertips in an easily accessible format, leaving them with the confidence that they have the power they need to get the job done.” From wherever they are, EMMA users can see at a glance the
charging status, remaining battery level, estimated working hours available and geographic location of each machine. They can also receive alerts when the battery charge has reached a certain point, as well as reminders to charge the machine when the remaining power drops below a predefined level. Operators can check the charging status of their machine during their lunch break, for example, and be alerted when the battery level is high enough to complete the job. Fleet managers, meanwhile, can use EMMA from the office at the end of a working day to plan charging and the next job accordingly.
21 He explains, in absolute terms, that Volvo CE will reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2030, independent of the volume of machines that it is selling. “Yes, it is extremely challenging, but the good part is this is also an extremely big opportunity because we are not alone doing this. We are a leading player in the construction equipment industry but if you take all other companies in the world, in 2015 it was 116 companies, globally, independent of industry, that had pledged for the sciencebased targets. Last year, it was 2466. Of course, not everyone is in transport, logistics and the construction industry. However, I am sure that many of these companies need us to be able to fulfill what they are aiming for.” Jernberg’s colleague Carl Slotte, senior vice president of Sales Europe and a member of the Executive Management Team, goes into further detail about the global sustainability drive and the significant role that Volvo CE has to play in this journey. “We can see that our key accounts that have committed to science-based targets is growing exponentially. That’s so important because they come and ask us how we can support them in their sustainability journey. Key accounts are important because first of all they are our customers today but many times they are also our customers’ customers so they will also directly and indirectly put challenges on us in our sustainability journey. And they will be together with us driving this transformation”. According to Slotte, Volvo CE has approximately 350 electric machines out in the field that are being used every day and it is from talking to customers and dealers that the manufacturer is constantly able to learn what is happening as this huge technological shift takes place. “You can divide the customer usage and experience in three main areas. The first one is of course productivity. We have learned so far that productivity on electric machines is at least as good as the diesel machines. Then another very important thing is the maneuvrability and machine handling. Everything we hear is that our electric products are better in machine handling than diesel versions with a faster response time. The machine handling or the hydraulics is excellent and of course the noise is an improvement on diesel machines too.” Among the big discussions Volve CE continues to have with its customers, charging times and the length of time these machines can run on each charge is at the forefront. Slotte explains, however, that it’s not only about how many minutes or hours you can drive the machine. “It’s a lot about planning. With every electrified machine
TEST DRIVE
THE NEW AND IMPROVED HEAVY-DUTY VOLVO L350H CMME was lucky enough to carry out a test drive on the recently updated Volvo L350H wheel loader which is the flagship machine and the biggest model in Volvo CE’s wheel loader range. It is designed to tackle a range of applications from mining and quarrying to heavy infrastructure. The Volvo L350H comes with the standard proven Z-bar lifting arm with double sealing on each of the pins, and strong frame structure, which is joined by a reinforced upper centre hinge and new Volvo axles giving it an even tougher form. The heavy-duty upgrade now has an even more responsive hydraulics system, featuring new lift and tilt cylinders, and an increased hydraulic working pressure, which according to Volvo CE allows for 10% faster work cycles and higher productivity. Meanwhile, the upgraded driveline features new Volvo axles and an all-new Volvo transmission which enables the third generation OptiShift to be equipped as standard.

we have zero idle time which is part of that equation as well.” He adds: “As long as you can solve the charging question on-site then you are well off. We are not dependent on a public charging structure like the on-highway truck or cars. As long as we solve it on the site then that is a good solution for our customers. That is why many times we go with mobile solutions.” Speaking about the uptake of new technology in emerging markets Adriano
Merigli, Head of Region International at Volvo Construction Equipment is positive that interest is increasing year-on-year. “It’s very interesting because we may think it’s not happening there but every year, we are seeing numbers increasing in these countries,” he says. Although the timescale for introducing new technology may be different Merigli explains that Volvo CE can help drive some of the developments and discussions in these markets and be a part of the discussion on
Volvo CE has been looking to the future of construction equipment and the industry as a whole with three distinct goals in mind: more sustainability, maximised productivity and improved safety.
how these countries can be best prepared for new technologies moving forward. “Meanwhile we will work with CO2 reduction programmes, to be more fuel efficient,” he adds. “All of this will add to better results so it is incredible to see. Sometimes we visit these countries and we don’t expect to see the changes taking place. We go to South Africa and people are asking when we are going to have electric machines here. I have been to Saudi also where there are some big projects, and they are asking for electric machines also so it’s really moving in a good way.” Looking to the future, Volvo CE are seeing three distinct drivers from their customers today based on what they see as important. The first one is how can they drive forward a more sustainable operation. The second driver focuses on having a more efficient operation and maximising productivity while finally, there is the issue of safety and how to operate in the safest way possible? To support these key drivers Volvo CE is approaching these issues from several angles. Among its machine or asset related services is the whole assist family; for example, load assist, dig assist and pave assist which helps
INDUSTRY FIRST
VOLVO CE DELIVERS INDUSTRY-FIRST CONSTRUCTION MACHINE USING FOSSIL-FREE STEEL Volvo Construction Equipment has delivered the world’s first construction machine built using fossil-free steel to a customer, said the company. In the latest step as manufacturers globally move towards carbon neutrality, the A30G articulated hauler was handed over by President of Volvo CE Melker Jernberg to long-standing customer NCC at a
ceremony hosted by LeadIt – the Leadership Group for Industry Transition – in conjunction with the United Nations environmental meeting Stockholm +50. It was attended by John Kerry, US Special Presidential Envoy to Climate and Annika Strandhäll, Swedish Minister for Climate. “We are sure that to succeed in decarbonizing the construction industry, actors
in the value chain will need to collaborate and act. Thanks to our strong partnerships with other driven and forwardthinking companies, we are now able to lead the change towards fossil-free construction and be the first to deliver a machine built using fossil-free steel to a customer. Turning commitments into actions is key to building the world we
want to live in,” said Melker Jernberg, on the announcement. As part of reducing its carbon footprint across its entire value chain raw materials used in its products, of which steel is a major component, will be a key focus. The production using fossil-free steel in Volvo CE’s machines and components will be gradual and depend on aspects such as steel availability, the company added.

with both efficiency and, in turn, sustainability. Their AcitveCare telematics package supports fleet and uptime and focuses on getting the data that really matters by combining 24/7 machine monitoring and fleet utilisation reports, designed to keep your machines in top operating condition, reduce unplanned downtime and minimize repair costs. When it comes to on-site digitalized solutions, Pay-forPerformance is a one-bundle Equipment-asa-Service (EaaS) offering where the customer pays on the usage of the machine.
“It’s very important to remember that solutions are developed together with the customer, with us and the dealer. That is really the most important thing because the demand from a site point of a view is different depending on the site,” says Slotte. “We can do all this with the so-called conventional diesel technology. But this will be an even bigger question when we take the technology steps into an electrified, automated and digitalised site. Then these questions will become really important. And
Volvo CE’s customer centre houses more than 80 machines, many of which were on show during Volvo Days, demonstrating how common tasks can be carried out simply and efficiently.
of course, the solutions in an automised site will not be the same as we have today in a conventional diesel technology operation. It’s a big shift for the customers and for us.” With the return of Volvo Days, the feeling in this part of northern Europe was that the pace of change is only going to accelerate as the pressing needs of society become ever-more urgent. Expect more questions and further digitalised solutions as Volve CE, its dealers and its customers continue on this journey together.
“Key accounts are important because first of all they are our customers today but many times they are also our customers’ customers so they will also directly and indirectly put challenges on us in our sustainability journey. And they will be together with us driving this transformation”

INTERVIEW JULY 2022
“We planned to open in the UAE in Q2, this year but due to supply chain issues we weren’t able to get the product, so we’ve now moved that. We’re going to recruit a team in the final quarter of this year and then we hope to be operational in the first quarter of next year. We’re looking at somewhere in Jebel Ali in Dubai, and also in Abu Dhabi,” says Carter. The general manager previously worked in the UAE for eight years and knows that like most places in the Middle East, liquidity presents a key challenge and for that reason, their approach to UAE will be slightly different, to ensure it can withstand the fiercest of tests that may lie ahead. “We are going to take a different approach to the UAE. So, the Dayim Equipment Rental that you see in UAE will be different in terms of product portfolio to the one you see in Qatar, Saudi or Kuwait. We’re going to focus more on the oil & gas sector and will be supporting that from Jebel Ali. And then we’re going to be looking at the logistics sector so material handling and some of the specialist access equipment such as spider lifts will be quite important to us. In many of the shiny new construction buildings in the UAE we know there’s margin pressure, so we are going to stay away from that. We’re going to bring some green products as well, some battery driven generator’s, solar tower lights, and electric manlifts. Carter is keen to take advantage of the massive rental opportunities across the region at the moment. Pointing to the European market which has become saturated, and the US, which is also starting to mature, he believes it makes sense to rent for big capex equipment and that we’re now seeing more of that in the Middle East where, for government type contracts, the contractor often has to work on tighter margins and cashflow pressures. “Why not let the money go to the rental companies and preserve your capital and invest it into the project,” he adds. “It’s definitely growing. Saudi in particular has massive potential. There are always opportunities in the Middle East and that’s what I love about it. I think the equipment rental sector has got a very good, strong future and it is going to continue to grow.” With recently signed projects still at the very beginning of their term, the prospect of more dealerships and a step into different markets, the room for growth at Dayim Equipment Rental is abundantly clear. On the back of all that it could turn out to be one of the busiest years, yet for the rental company.
Earlier this year Dayim Equipment Rental signed an exclusive dealership with Manitou becoming one of the very first companies to bring its telehandlers to the Saudi market.

JEKKO INTRODUCES 990KG MINIPICKER WHY GET IT? CAN BE DRIVEN THROUGH NARROW PLACES AND USED FOR PANE HANDLING AND INDUSTRIAL MAINTENANCE Jekko has updated its minipicker range with the 990-kg MPK10, featuring the same design as the MPK06 but boasting a higher capacity, said he company. The latest model can be applied to different fields including glazed pane handling, industrial maintenance and any sector where a compact and performing solution is needed. The MPK10 has four 24V-155Ah rechargeable batteries that power the electrohydraulic unit controlling the crane handling, the electrical actuators for the manipulator and the electric rotation motors for travel. It also uses noiseless zeroemissions motor when working indoors. According to Jekko, the most important asset of the MPK10 is the +9°/-9° slewing of the turret. In addition, to the manipulator that has a 360° continuous rotation performing three movements,
this function makes it easier to drive the machine through narrow places. “The MPK10, as well as the brand new MPK20R to be unveiled at the Bauma exhibition, are part of Jekko’s next generation of products in the minipicker range destined to meet the requirements of a vast customer base asking for user-friendly, simple, safe and reliable machines to be used in small or large lifting works,” said Alberto Franceschini, sales director at Jekko. This minipicker can be used with a hook or with a JVM10 vacuum manipulator for glazed panes fitted with 6 suction cups powered by a dual vacuum system. In addition to these tools, the crane can also be equipped with a second manipulator (600-kg load capacity) that optimises the total weight and increases both reach and maximum capacity. A major characteristic introduced by the MPK10 is the optional radio-remote control in addition to the standard wired control. The radio-remote control features 6 independent and touch-proportional functions. The controls are divided into two groups of 3 buttons each, controlling the machine and the manipulator respectively. The radio-remote control has a great edge over the wired control since it operates the machine from any angle regardless of the minipicker position.

HYUNDAI LAUNCHES ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCKS WHY GET THEM? DELIVER EXCELLENT STABLITY WITH MAXIMUM DRIVE AND TRACTION ON ROUGH TERRAIN Hyundai Construction Equipment has introduced two articulated dump truck models to its growing line of heavy construction and earthmoving equipment. The HA30A and HA45A have rated payloads of 28 tonnes and 41 tonnes respectively, providing an ideal haul truck match for Hyundai’s larger crawler excavators and wheeled loaders. Aimed at the popular 30 and 45-tonne sectors, the HA30A and HA45A are built around a full-time six-wheel drive concept, with front and rear limited slip differentials and a longitudinal differential that can be manually locked, for maximum drive and traction on difficult terrain. According to the company, the new trucks have a compact chassis design, “to aid manoeuvrability”, with a sloping rear frame and a front-mounted differential integrated into the ZF transmission, “allowing for a shorter front frame section.” “This results in the smallest turning radius in the sector and outstanding stability. Selflevelling hydro-gas suspension on the front axle further supports a comfortable ride,
delivering maximum tractability in tough ground conditions,” Hyundai CE adds. The HA30A and HA45A are equipped with a full hydraulic retarder, combined with an electronic engine brake as standard. This supports the oil-cooled wet disc brakes to achieve an extended service lifetime of up to 15,000 hours. Among other features, the trucks are supplied with a gradient metre, with flip-over protection and a Body Over Centre of Gravity function, to assist drivers when tipping and operating on rough terrain. Hyundai’s Hi-Mate telematic monitoring system is standard, with satellite and GSM connectivity, to reach the inaccessible construction and mining sites across the world. This enables remote monitoring of productivity, fuel consumption, system warning and maintenance status, reducing unplanned downtime and improving fleet utilisation Hyundai CE says both dump trucks have been designed to have the most spacious and comfortable cabs in the industry, with convenient, easy-to-use controls. The operator has a climate control feature that is particularly useful in extreme temperatures while the cab is suspended on a rubber mount, preventing vibration and reducing noise. “A combination of long-lasting
components, less moving parts and clever design, reduces servicing and maintenance,” helping keep costs down the company adds. Both the HA30A and the HA45A have one rear differential and a simple driveline with fewer moving parts, simplifying overall maintenance. A sloping chassis also keeps more wet materials inside the tipping body to save time and money while more compact dimensions allow the machine to be moved on a shorter low loader, saving transport costs in the process. Due to an auto grease system machines do not require lubrication. Wear and tear is also reduced due to an equal weight distribution system that ensures the same load is on every tyre. A gradient meter ensures that the truck is driven safely within its limits, while an integrated rearview camera and large mirrors provide all-round visibility when reversing under an excavator or into the dumping area. The two ADTs are the first visible sign of the new cooperation between Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe (HCEE) and Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI), since the purchase of the Doosan business last year by Hyundai Heavy Industries Group. HCEE and HDI now operate as separate divisions within Hyundai Genuine, maintaining their independent management and dealer network structures.

SAND SAVER
BOBCAT COMPACT TRACK LOADER COMBINES WITH POPULAR ATTACHMENT TO CLEAN HUGE MONDELLO BEACH IN SICILY
S
and cleaning is probably not the first task that comes to mind when one thinks of the vast array of possibilites that come with machinery attachments. Yet, not surprisingly, such attachments are particularly popular, both along coastal areas that are populated by beaches and for the facility management of sandbased sports fields or horse racing tracks, or even for the clean-up of project sites in the desert after work has been completed. One piece of equipment which is no stranger to these tasks is the Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner attachment, which was mounted on a new Bobcat T76 R-Series compact track loader and used recently for cleaning one of the most beautiful and widest coasts in Italy: the Sicilian beach of Mondello. Offering 1500 metres of very fine white sand, the Mondello beach is a wellknown and sought-after destination on the national and international scene. The high performance T76 compact track loader, combined with this new Bobcat attachment specifically for beach cleaning, was purchased by the Mondello Italo Belga company, which has been taking care of the Mondello area for more than a hundred years, helping to preserve the uniqueness and the original splendour of this location. With the completion of land reclamation operations in the early 1900s, the Mondello Italo Belga company transformed this coastal district into a renowned seaside resort, based around the long white sand beach. The work on Mondello beach is important to the local economy as it is the only sandy beach in Palermo, a crowded city which is only 11 km
away, meaning it is one of the most coveted beaches by Palermo people as well as by tourists from all over the world. Soil protection Dedicated to continuous development of the area, Mondello Italo Belga also wanted to adapt its equipment to support soil protection. “The choice of the Sand Cleaner to protect the beach is linked to the desire to achieve a technological evolution in the equipment,” says Antonio Gristina, CEO of Mondello Italo Belga company. He adds: “The maintenance of Mondello beach never stops. To avoid the creation of dunes and to remove organic debris carried by the wind and tides, maintenance is required throughout the year, before, during and after the seasonal peak. The investment we have made combines the company’s interest in being able to carry out the cleaning work in a more rational and advantageous way, with the environmental and sustainability needs of the area.” The decision to purchase the Bobcat Sand Cleaner, despite the fact that the company already had other suitable means to carry out this work, was primarily due to the need to ensure a thorough cleaning of the beach and therefore also of the sea. The machine and attachment are used continuously at the beginning of the season and during the entire summer period, passing on a daily basis between the rows of umbrellas, thanks to the compact dimensions of the T76 loader and its high manoeuvrability. Mr Genova, responsible for the maintenance of the Mondello beach for over 50 years now, and therefore an expert in the most suitable means for doing this, expllins that as soon as they realised the potential of the T76 loader combined with the Bobcat Sand Cleaner in terms of “speed

of work and saving of resources”, they chose to replace their existing machines. “Another important advantage for us,” he adds “is that, thanks to the rubber tracks, the T76 track loader can travel and circle on the road so it does not require dedicated transport on a vehicle from our warehouse to the beach.” Faster and deeper cleaning Capable of covering a large area of 15,000 m² per hour, the Bobcat Sand Cleaner can quickly sift sand and retains even the smallest waste such as cigarette butts, caps, pieces of glass, wood splinters and algae. The waste is accumulated in its integrated 350 l collection bucket, which can be unloaded directly into trucks or bins, thanks to the hydraulic opening system of the bucket and the arms of the compact loader on which the attachment is mounted. It is a very effective sand cleaning tool with an adjustable depth from 0 to 20 cm, and equipped with interchangeable grids with four mesh sizes (5x5,10x10, 15x15 and 20x20 mm), to collect waste and debris of all sizes. The Bobcat SC200 Sand Cleaner does not require any maintenance and is extremely easy and quick to mount on the T76 due to its Bob-Tach attachment system. Available on all Bobcat compact track and skid-steer loaders, the Bob-Tach system allows them
to be quickly and safely combined with all Bobcat attachments, ensuring versatility and efficiency. Bobcat attachments also have a ‘Plug & Play’ design, a unique technology that allows an exchange of multiple information using a single electrical cable connected to and operated via a panel from the comfort of the cab on the loader. The attachments are equipped with an Attachment Control Device (ACD) that allows them to be immediately recognised by the carrier machine and
therefore ensures instant communication with them.
The Bobcat Sand Cleaner is capable of covering 15,000 metres squared per hour and can be used for the smallest of waste such as cigarette butts, caps or pieces of glass.
SCREENING BUCKET
MB CRUSHER DOING MORE WITH LESS Another attachment that has been particularly active recently is the MB-S18 screening bucket, that has been spotted on a range of different projects helping users to overcome a shortage of resources, reduce construction costs and avoid unnecessary wastage by doing more with less. In the Cerro Negro mine in the Atacama region of Chile, for example, 80km of trenching across the desert has recently been completed without having to purchase and transport the sand needed to fill the trench. The MB-S18 screening bucket was simply attached to the Doosan DX225LC to repurpose the excavated material into the filler. According to MB Crusher this resulted in “huge savings paired up with a speedy
execution of the job, as well as being environmentally friendly.” Due to on-site processing not only did this mean less trucks but also there was less risk of contaminated material coming in from outside the region. In Agadir, a port city in Morocco the MB-S18 screening bucket was used, this time with a
Doosan 240 at the site, in the reconstruction of a new water pipeline that has been completed across the city. In the Saharan climate where extreme temperatures are at play, it was fundamental that the reconstruction of this pipeline of drinking water was done quickly with the maximum safety for the workers. According to MB Crusher manual separation of the excavated material not only would have taken too long, but it would have been too risky while material obtained would not have been homogeneous. Through using the attachment excavated material was sifted obtaining uniform graded material, as well as improving both speed and safety at this job site.
The R-Series T76 Stage V track loader Utilising the qualities of the new T76 as a tool carrier, the Mondello Italo Belga company is able to manage not only the wide beach, but also other aspects of the business. As Antonio Gristina confirms: “The fact that the T76 loader can be used for different needs thanks to the interchange of attachments represents for us an optimisation of costs and therefore an important saving. Its strength and operational capabilities allow us to use it to keep the grounds of the properties clean, as well as carrying out site works and for lifting and carrying materials. Last but not least, the advanced technology in the Bobcat T76 loader allows us to access Industry 4.0 developments.” The T76 R-Series loader, launched in October 2020 as part of the revolutionary Next is Now programme, offers significant advantages compared to the previous generation machines. The loader has been improved with larger track coverage allowing for a smoother ride. The increased stability, coupled with improved hydraulic efficiency, allows for improved push and breakout forces and increased lifting capacity. According to Bobcat, the new cast steel boom construction makes the T76 loader 20% stronger and the increased lift height makes it easier to unload materials into high-sided trucks. Among the available options Mondello Italo Belga chose a cab with transparent sides, equipped with side protections without mesh to increase visibility; a 7-inch touch screen display that shows the rear camera view and provides information on the machine and attachment, and the undercarriage with 5-Link torsion suspension that reduces vibrations and material loss.

POURING POWER
BUILT FOR HIGH-CAPACITY POURS AND LARGE WORKSITES CIFA’S NEWLY RELEASED K56L TRUCK MOUNTED CONCRETE PUMP HAS THE POWER TO EXCEL IN THE MOST DEMANDING OF CONCRETE PLACING JOBS
I
n the construction of high-rise buildings and structures there is one thing that contractors require huge amounts of. Concrete. In somewhere like the Middle East that has seen the construction of some of the biggest skyscrapers ever to exist it is not hard to see the importance of having huge volumes of concrete that can be poured in the most cost-effective, time-efficient way. To take a recent example, Dubai’s Uptown Tower required 23,000 trucks to deliver approximately 140,000 cubic meters of concrete to the project, with around 30,000 tonnes of steel. The tower topped out at 329 metres in January, this year, when the final concrete pour for the building’s roof on level 79 was completed by the project team. These days not only does the use of modern pumps in the construction process allow concrete to reach otherwise inaccessible places with ease, pumping faster and lifting buckets with little difficulty but the technology exists to ensure that there is a continuous flow of concrete, making the biggest projects more efficient than ever. A prime example of this is concrete manufacturer CIFA’s newest addition to the market - the K56L; a heavy-duty and versatile machine that comes well-equipped for working on large-scale construction sites. Available with three different pumping units (the open-circuit HP1606H plus the closed-circuit HP1608EC and HP1808ECX), it can be fitted on an 8x4 truck in the Middle East market or on a classic 10x4 truck for the European market, where regulations are more stringent.
38

Advanced Technology The K56L exploits its full power due to highly developed electronic management with an array of integrated systems that help with recurring operations and render onsite operations easier and safer. Intelligent control of the truck pump is through the Smartronic system. In particular, the operator is given more precise control though ASC (Advanced Stability Control) which slows down the boom’s movement or even stops it when there is a risk to stability being compromised; while through the predictive MBE (Max Boom Extension) system the operator knows the maximum, safe distance that can be reached with the boom before they begin unfolding it. The new K56L can also be equipped with CIFA Vista telemetry, capable of geolocating the vehicle, handling maintenance and above all, recording performance, consumption and error messages. Speaking about the innovation, CIFA’s Head of Area – MENA, Wajih Eit says: “This is a real new concept in the remote technological services field launched last month by the CIFA company. CIFA VISTA is now available for truck-mounted pumps, truck-mixer pumps and truck mixers but it will soon be extended to the entire range. It uses an electronic control unit that collects data from the machine and with a data SIM card sends it to the software. This then enables the monitoring of position, activities and different operation parameters of fleet machinery.”
He adds: “CIFA’s goal with this new service is, in fact, to simplify the management of remote diagnostics and predict maintenance checks to save time and money for customers. From diagnostics to automation and remote monitoring, CIFA’s technological solutions are user friendly and the aim is not to simplify knowledge, but to simplify work within construction sites.” Straight away one of the most notable hardware features of the Steeltech K56L is

its five-section boom with RZ configuration. At full vertical extension it can reach 55.1 metres, without complicating handling during the positioning phase. In addition to the piping being external making maintenance more efficient, the new turret ensures the boom closes more compactly and doesn’t protrude beyond the pumping unit or above the cabin. Next, the stabilisation system which is X-shaped, just like the K55L model comes with front outriggers that have a dual extension, which reduces the opening times and the burden on the ground. The swingout rear outriggers, however, are longer and more robust, housing the two plastic tanks (600 litres) for water and diesel. According to Eit, “The combination of design and smart electronic systems reduces positioning times while at the same time it ensures utmost safety during operation and so the pump’s performance is also improved.” Representing a new heavy-duty design, the K56L’s chassis is shared with the betterknown, tried-and-tested K60H, which is characterised by a sturdy sub-turret that also houses the new oil tank that has easy access for any maintenance. CIFA has been present in the global market continuously since 1929, which, the company says, makes it the oldest concrete machinery supplier still active today. Over the years this presence was developed through local dealers in each country and today, all of the main markets
MAJOR MILESTONE
SANY AND PUTZMEISTER REACH 10 YEARS TOGETHER This year marks the 10th anniversary of SANY’s acquisition of Putzmeister, SANY has announced. Back in 2012, SANY Germany and CITIC PE collaborated in buying 100% of the shares in Putzmeister for 360 million euros. This represented a milestone move for SANY as well as a game-changing event in the landscape of the global construction machinery industry. Over the past decade, Putzmeister, already a top concrete machinery manufacturer in Europe before the acquisition, has experienced steady growth and development under SANY. Putzmeister’s sales volume grew from €500 million in 2011 to more than €800 million in 2021, maintaining its leading position
in global market shares. Ten years on and Putzmeister has been integrated into SANY’s global business map. With its research and developemnt, manufacturing and sales network expanding to cover Europe, America and Asia-Pacific regions, the former German family company now enjoys a broader global presence in 154 countries and regions. According to SANY, today nearly half of the concrete machines around the world bear the SANY or Putzmeister logo. The company adds: “For SANY, Putzmeister provides applicable experience in internationalisation, intelligent manufacturing and concepts and practices compatible with the fourth industrial revolution.
For Putzmeister, its capability of developing new businesses is reinforced with SANY’s financial support and resources.” The research and development cooperation between the two companies has been evidently fruitful, having jointly launched the V8 series and the 45 m pump truck for the European market, and together they are now taking the lead in the new arena of electrical, smart and digital products. Last year, Putzmeister released the world’s first hybrid pump truck “Iontron” and has applied big data technology in the concrete production, transportation and placement process to improve productivity operations and fuel efficiency.
“Both companies serve to open up markets for one another,” says SANY. “More Putzmeister products gained access to the Chinese market through SANY, such as Putzmeister’s wet shotcreting machine, mortar machine, industrial pump and telebelt. Similarly, many of SANY’s products have become globally visible through Putzmeister’s network.” “Compared to the sales growth,” adds Jiang Xiangyang, Chairman’s Representative at Putzmeister Holding GmbH, “the significance of the acquisition lies in that it gave SANY a closer view of a leading company in the west, the market in developed countries and their way of company governance.”
39 in the Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East and South Asia are well covered either by local dealers or subsidiaries of CIFA and the mother company ZOOMLION Group. “In the Middle East, we have a big fleet of machines and batching plants running since the 1970 in this region. Thanks to our top-class dealers network formed by the biggest groups in each country, we are able to give full support to end users in terms of service and parts availability,” says Eit, before explaining further that the Middle East is a key region after Europe for CIFA. “Since for us the Middle East is a key region after Europe, we moved our own presence locally through the group’s 10.000 sqm platfor m in Jebel Ali Free Zone, where we have a stock of machines ready for sale, and big stock of Spare Parts, along with a highly skilled local team of sales and service engineers.” Clean Energy As the construction sector faces up to the need to make a green turn even the concrete sector has made its own advancements in cleaner, electric machines. Next year, CIFA’s electric range Energya will mark its tenth year having hit the market in 2013, the first

line of full electric concrete machines in the world, according to the company. “Our equipment such as concrete mixers and mixer-pumps are mounted on trucks that, being traditionally diesel, make the whole vehicle a hybrid vehicle. Precisely for this reason, we are working to develop an all-electric version. The advantages of using our electric solutions are less noise, zero emissions and even lower consumption, for a cleaner environment,” says Eit. Energya mixers are able to work in fully
electric mode even with the truck engine turned off. The concept is based on an innovative handling system that combines the advantages of traditional technology with those of electric. The movement of the concrete mixer drum, for example, is guaranteed by an electric induction motor that receives energy from a lithium-ion battery, which in turn can be recharged either by mains power or by an on-board generator. With the KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System), Energya machines are able to recover energy during the deceleration phase of the vehicle, which would otherwise be lost. Two new electric machines were launched at Bauma 2016 and 2019: the CSSE spritz pump and the MK28E concrete pump, making the Energya brand a proper range. The brand has continued to evolve and as at the previous Bauma fairs, a new Energya machine will also be presented at this year’s show. The launch will take place at the start of the event, in the CIFA area at the Zoomlion stand. Among the products on display at the Zoomlion stand will be the new Steeltech K50L pump, also being launched at Bauma, and the Carbotech K60H and K47H.
“From diagnostics to automation and remote monitoring, CIFA’s technological solutions are user friendly and the aim is not to simplify knowledge, but to simplify work within construction sites”
