Agility is the key to reaching confined spaces. At only 1.45m (4 ft. 9 in.),
the ultra-narrow width of the Snorkel S2755RT fits in places where a standard width machine would have difficulties. While it can reach a maximum working height of 10.1m (33 ft. 1 in.), this machine is also lightweight and can be towed on a car trailer between jobs. Add to that rugged 4-wheel drive and optional bi-energy for a highly versatile scissor lift that can go the distance on all terrains.

CHANGE, WITNESSED By the time you read this, two matters would already have become common knowledge in the equipment world: the postponement of Bauma 2022 and the pull-out of two industry heavyweights from the triennial prestige event. With Volvo CE and JLG making it clear in their withdrawal notes from Bauma that the future of their marketing initiatives is elsewhere, it brings into perspective the changes that a year of Covid-19 has brought about in our habits, work practices and in the way we’ve used technologies at our disposal. And technology is the new buzz word the world over, as if there has been a seeming takeover of our lives as much by the phenomenon as by the Coronavirus. Not only are we watching movies at home on Netflix rather than at the theatre, ordering food and groceries on apps rather than venturing into the bustle of supermarkets and eateries, and, most importantly, increasing working from our “home offices” – in the world of construction equipment, we are also making sales pitches and demos virtually, diagnosing the faults in our machines remotely and operating as much of our equipment and job-sites using apps from a distance as we can. No wonder then that we see a change in the mindsets – and consequently, the habits – of people in the Middle East equipment sector. As several senior executives of the big global brands tell us in this issue, there is not just greater acceptance of new connected and digital technologies in the change-averse regional equipment sector, there is downright enthusiasm for it at the moment. In our features on the access sector and on OTR tyres, we see how new tech such as Genie’s E-Drive, and JLG’s, JCB’s and Haulotte’s electric machines have taken off in a longoverdue drive towards electrification. The use
of diagnostic and equipment management apps is similarly common now and whether it is recording and deciphering tyre performance data or decoding faults on MEWPs, OEMs in all segments are reporting similar tendencies in end-user behaviour, predicated on tech use. But the more things change the more they remain the same – at least at some level. Elsewhere in this issue, we visit Kanoo Machinery’s premises in Dubai’s Al Quoz, where we see that contact with the customer – albeit virtual – is still as vital as it ever was. Not only is Kanoo Machinery trying to go above and beyond in customer service based on traditional principles, it is also using IT to serve that purpose, in the form of a revamped website providing easier access to its personnel for its customers, and backing it up with physical improvements, such as a revamped parts section. The main question in all this is whether this is the start of a new trend in the use of technology or merely a stop-gap arrangement to fill the contingency of the time until we eventually arrive at the normalcy we knew before. If the changes witnessed in history are anything to go by, once people find, and get used to, the benefit of an innovation, they seldom go back to old ways. We can safely conclude that they won’t this time either. Happy Eid!

said the organier’s statement.
Johnson Arabia is looking to enhance its services and business this year with expansions in its aerial work platforms fleet, opening a second branch in Muscat, Oman, and inducting new 100t capacity models into its rough terrain crane (RTC) fleet The Dubai-based equipment rental major said the investment was made “keeping in mind the growth of the oil & gas sector and other infrastructure projects in the UAE and so far the Grove 8100 RTCs cranes have had full utility as soon as they arrived”. From oil fields to government projects in Fujairah these new Groves are fully occupied, added Johnson Arabia. The company has also expanded its fleet of spider cranes with more models in response to the growing demand in projects with space constraints, like the various pavilions at
Dubai Expo 2020, mall refurbishments and extensions, and even glass and glazing works for buildings. “We are also happy that this market is picking up on the advantages of these small but powerful lifters and seeing the potential for more in the future,” said the company. Further, on the AWP side, Johnson Arabia has also opened a new IPAF training centre in Abu Dhabi. ”Prior to Covid-19 it was very easy to shuttle trainees to and from Abu Dhabi but there was a gap in the market for easily accessible IPAF training in the Abu Dhabi region and Johnson Arabia came through to help. Training in Abu Dhabi is scheduled weekly and in safe numbers with adherence to Covid guidelines. The smaller batches benefit trainees with more opportunities for individual questions and learning.”

Tadano has introduced two new truck-mounted crane models which offer various lift capacities and radius configurations along with high manoeuvrability through clever outrigger solutions for versatile usage. The new HK 4.050-1 and HK 4.070-1 truck-mounted crane models offer ease of handling and neatly remain within axle load limits in most urban and road environments, said Tadano. The four-axle units are good for work sites where space is tight – from prefab home assembly through
garage setup projects, all the way to roofing and carpentry jobs. The 50 model is 11.11m long and 2.55m wide, while the 70 model is 11.8m long and 2.55m wide. Both cranes are less than 4m in height. The HK 4.050-1’s boom can be extended to a maximum length of 35.2m. Together with the jib, this comes to a maximum system length of 44.2m with large lifting capacities. The HK 4.070-1 features a main boom with a length of up to 41m. With a jib, the maximum system length is extended to 56.8m.

Kwong-Joon Leong, regional product manager for Asia – tower cranes, Manitowoc, said: “Topless cranes are becoming the go-to solution for the speed and flexibility they bring to jobsites. The integration of the MCT 185 into our topless range opens up even more possibilities for contractors, and of course it is backed by the industry-leading technical support that is synonymous with Potain.” The new MCT 185 has a 65m jib, yet the entire upper works of the crane can travel in just five containers thanks to its “intelligent, compact design”. Raimondi towers in Qatar and UAE
Raimondi Middle East has reported a strong boost in its commercial activity in the GCC countries, led by the UAE and Qatar, where it has recently seen the deployment of five flattop models across several job-sites. The Italian tower crane specialist said it is also currently involved in a series of different job-sites around the MENA region,
as well as in various large-scale projects in the GCC region that require multiple cranes, Wael Hasan, commercial director, Middle East, at Raimondi Cranes, said: “We are currently working on several projects between the UAE and Qatar. Across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we have three Raimondi MRT111s at work on various residential
developments. In Qatar, we have just installed two MRT294s that are participating in the building of two new Marriott hotels.” The job-sites vary in scope and scale, he added with one of the MRT111 tower cranes, with a jib length of 50m and height under hook (HUH) of 35m, at work in the Dubai’s Warsan area for the development of a residential building. The model’s maximum lifting capacity of 8t and tip load of 2.3t suited the job-site’s requirements. Two Raimondi MRT111s are onsite at the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (KIZAD) with jib lengths of 54m and a HUH of 29m. The MRT111, one of Raimondi’s bestselling models, is soughtafter for its versatility in tower height while maintaining high performance measures in terms of maximum load and hoist speeds, said the manufacturer. “In Qatar, where we erected two MRT294 14t cranes, we satisfied the client’s request by offering the heaviest lifters currently in our portfolio,” Hasan said.

COMPACT TADANO SHINES IN NUREMBERG
W
hen things get tight on the construction site and there’s no room for compromises in terms of performance, German lifting services provider Merkel Autokrane GmbH often calls on its Tadano four-axle crane. This is exactly what happened when the company was tasked with constructing an apartment building in Nuremberg. Nuremberg is no different from other major German cities in that housing is in short supply. This is why apartment buildings are often under construction in a bid to tackle this less-than-ideal situation. The construction companies working on these projects are faced with two challenges: On the one hand, urban streets are usually very cramped, and on the other, lifting work has to be carried out quickly to minimise disruption to traffic. Merkel Autokrane GmbH recently called upon a Tadano ATF 70G-4 for precisely such a task. Gunther Merkel, owner and managing director of Merkel Autokrane, works with his 28-strong team under the motto “Merkel keeps it simple, Merkel keeps it light”. This slogan is also fitting for the Tadano four-axle crane used in Nuremberg.
“Our 44m boom-version ATF 70G-4 is impressively reliable and incredibly user-friendly, and its compact dimensions make it easy for us to get jobs done effortlessly – even in confined spaces,” said Merkel. The Tadano ATF 70G-4 is only 12.45m long and less than 2.66m wide with 16.00 tyres. Combined with the clean axle loads of the four-axle, these compact dimensions make getting to the job site particularly easy and cost-effective. Issues with narrow access roads are a thing of the past. On the project in Nuremberg, Merkel Autokrane was able to carry the entire necessary counterweight within an axle load of 12t – without additional transport. This was ideal for both the operator and the customer alike. Once on site, concrete elements weighing 4-5t, which were needed for the construction of the apartment complex, had to be lifted to a height of about 25m. This was no problem at all for the team from Merkel Autokrane thanks to the 44m main boom of the Tadano ATF 70G-4. After all, you never have to compromise on performance with a Tadano. The lift was completed in no time and both the crane service provider and the customer were delighted with a project well done.

SALIM’S DYNAMIC CHOICE
SALIM EQUIPMENT RENTAL AND ITS PARTNER DAIKYO KENKI CHOOSE LIEBHERR DUTY CYCLE CRANES TO EXPAND THEIR FLEET AS THEY STRENGTHEN THEIR DYNAMIC COMPACTION OFFERING
W
hen UAE-based Salim Equipment Rental and Japan-based Daikyo Kenki, expanded their rental business in the Middle East recently, they continued to invest in lift cranes and duty cycle cranes. Coming together in 2015 as a joint venture to offer cranes with operators for hire to the local market, their fleet now comprises seven crawler cranes from 50-250t capacity. Both members of the joint venture have a long history to fall back upon. Salim Equipment Rental, previously a part of AAA Rentals, was launched in 1980 as a trading company by Col. Salim Ahmed Nasir (Retd.) and Mrs. Nahid Salim, parents of the company’s current president and CEO, Sajil Salim. The founders originally supplied over 1,000 units of pre-owned Tadano and Kato cranes to the MENA region and backed this up
with dedicated service. Then in 2006, they turned to the rental market with a fleet of lift cranes supplied and serviced from their Dubai premises. Today, SALIM has its own fleet of crawler cranes independent from the JV with Daikyo. Also, SALIM remains the authorised dealers of Kato crawlers from 50-250t for the UAE region. Daikyo, meanwhile, is among the leading heavy equipment rental companies in Japan. Established in 1965, it has a fleet of 120 machines including cranes and trucks. Daikyo also diversified into real estate around 20 year ago and has seen growth in that sphere, but it’s primary area of business remains crane rental, where it has a fleet of 13–700t units and over 100 operators. The most recent expansion in the joint venture fleet was made in February, when SALIM took delivery of two new Liebherr HS895 HD cranes. The two units of the 200t-capacity duty cycle crane were delivered to SALIM in a handover ceremony at its Dubai premises graced by Sekiguchi Noboru, Consul General of Japan in Dubai. The new units come after SALIM’s decision in 2019 to enter the niche market of duty cycle operation and dynamic compaction, a technique used to increase
soil density by dropping a heavy weight repeatedly from different heights on the ground. With dynamic compaction requiring duty cycle cranes, SALIM initially boght two new Liebherr HS8130.1 crane models last February. These two 130t capacity models are now working on a national Infrastructure project in the UAE. With the units finding quick success in the dynamic compaction market owing to high crane utilisation in 2020, SALIM ordered a further two units with Liebherr in November last year, this time opting for higher lifting capacities in the form of the Liebherr HS895 HD 200t models, which were delivered in February in the ceremony at SALIM’s premises. Apart from the Japanese consul general, the function also saw dignitaries, senior officials and representatives from the Japan External Trade Organisation in Dubai, Japan Bank (DIFC), Liebherr Middle East, Liebherr Austria and Daikyo. “Some ground improvement and land reclamation projects require specialised, duty cycle cranes for dynamic compaction and dynamic replacement. With Liebherr duty cycle cranes, we can improve the density
15 and bearing capacity of the soil up to depths of 15m by these techniques, and the cranes can handle a high number of blows, typically 600 blows in a 10-hour shift. Only a few manufacturers make such cranes, and Liebherr was our first choice because the company has set the industry benchmark with regard to product development and customer support,” says Sajil Salim, president and CEO, Salim Equipment Rental. Kurt Rudigier, area sales manager, crawler cranes and foundation equipment, Liebherr-Werk Nenzing, adds: “Duty cycle crawler cranes are among Liebherr’s best-selling equipment in the Middle East, and we’ve sold over 200 such cranes in this region. This deal is special because Salim Equipment Rental placed the order for their first two duty-cycle cranes last year during one of the most challenging market conditions in recent years, when business owners were dealing with uncertainty. Despite the circumstances, Salim Equipment Rental went ahead with the deal, and we delivered the machines in August 2020. Following the second order, Liebherr manufactured the cranes in
Austria and delivered them within three months. We celebrate this success story during the pandemic and the valuable partner we found in Salim.” Explaining SALIM’s investment in the cranes, Salim adds: “Our investments in four duty cycle cranes in less than a year is a major step for us and an unusual move in our industry because they happened at the peak of the pandemic. Fortunately, the dynamic compaction market was resilient during the last year, and we expect our four duty cycle cranes to be busy on soil improvement sites and duty cycle jobs throughout 2021. We see opportunity for significant growth in the next few years from ground improvement and duty cycle jobs related to infrastructure projects in the MENA region. Dynamic compaction is a ‘high demand – high risk’ market that requires the full dedication of our resources, including a team of highly skilled operators, maintenance staff and Liebherr’s aftersales support. As there are few players with the technical competency required for such jobs, we also have the opportunity to expand globally.
“Salim Equipment Rental is built on the four principles of quality, commitment, integrity and professionalism. At our core, we are a Japanese company with similar work ethic as Daikyo Kenki. It’s interesting how we entered into a formal partnership after several years of business dealings. The joint venture was a natural progression for both us and Daikyo Kenki, but it happened only in 2015 after a decade-long process of winning each other’s trust, a characteristic highly valued by Japanese companies.” Ryuichi Uchida, president and CEO, Daikyo Kenki, adds: “Having established ourselves in Japan’s crane rental business, we had aspirations to expand globally. In 2005, I began exploring opportunities in the Middle East to establish a trading business, which led to my UAE visit and introduction to Sajil and his father. I was very impressed with their commitment to the crane industry and understanding of the local market and I entered into a trading partnership with them in 2005. Within 10 years, our successful business relationship evolved into our crane rental joint venture.”
“Fortunately, the dynamic compaction market was resilient last year, and we expect our cranes to be busy throughout 2021”

LIFTING THE CUSTOMER
FOCUSING ON SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESSES, MAMMOET’S NEW GROUP COMMERCIAL OFFICER DARREN ADAMS SAYS THE GLOBAL GIANT’S WORK IS AS MUCH ABOUT BUILDING CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS AS IT IS ABOUT MOVING HEAVY OBJECTS
G
lobal engineered heavy-lifting specialist Mammoet has appointed Darren Adams as its new group commercial officer, Introducing the new incumbent to the industry and the global press, Mammoet recently issued a communique that had Adam’s thoughts and deliberations on the industry he is a veteran of. With a signed Newcastle United shirt on the wall of his home office in the north-east of England a reminder of the world that will shortly return, Adams finds his horizons narrowed. But making it his mission to serve small and medium-sized businesses better than before, he says: “Somebody could give us a call this morning, we’ll be there this afternoon and tomorrow we’ve probably got equipment on the ground.” A bold statement from the man now leading Mammoet’s commercial activity - but one gained from a lifetime of understanding customers of all sizes. A stalwart of the heavy lifting industry, he’s taken on
every job it has to offer - from managing continents to clambering under SPMTs. A mechanical engineer, he was given his first big break in the industry thanks to a familiar name. Starting with a local heavy haulage firm in the UK, he was head-hunted for the new UK branch of a foreign-owned company - Van Seumeren - starting his career in North Sea offshore. “I was working with all the SPMTs that Van Seumeren had in the UK, which was about 176 lines if I remember rightly – at that time this was a huge amount, now it’s very little.” It was a time spent getting his hands dirty. “I was doing the engineering, but I was also going to the job sites and running the jobs, executing the work with the guys. If we had to connect the SPMTs together and get them ready, I was there with the team doing it.” He was responsible for projects from the first call until equipment was back at base, taking care of colleagues deployed from their native Netherlands. “The guys really liked coming to the UK because everything was organised for them, and it was also close to some pubs and some decent eating houses. That part of the job; the human side, is very important for the job.” It’s a time Adams remembers fondly, and clearly one
that plays a big part in who he is today, and how he approaches his work. His passion for projects lies first and foremost in the yard; in using his experience to understand each lift on a detailed technical level and communicating it effectively - or as he puts it, “I’ve been there; I’ve got the T-shirt”. One project stands out in particular for an offshore fabrication yard in Scotland: “I sold the project, but also drove the module out of the fabrication shop, put it onto the barge, set it down, brought the trailers back off, de-mobilised – with the team alongside me - so the clients saw that we could tender, negotiate, engineer and execute the whole thing.” Around the turn of the century, Adams took the opportunity to manage the North American business of the newly-renamed Mammoet. This experience was transformative – he would spend the majority of the following two decades there, becoming an increasingly important figure in the no-nonsense world of Texas oil & gas. It’s from these experiences – leaving projects filthy and exhausted, working side-by-side with customers – that Adams draws his conclusions about business. “You’ve got to be close to the customer.
17 You’ve got to understand their needs; their wishes, their drivers – why they get up in the morning.” It’s an attitude that is fundamental for Adams, whatever the project’s size or scope. And it’s about more than just being easy to deal with, personally – it’s about being able to hold meaningful conversations from the very first moment. “To serve customers best, you’ve got to have a good solid understanding in some detail of how to do the work. You should be able to explain step-by-step how you’re going to do the job, where you see the pros, where you see the cons, how you can save some time for them, where we can save costs for them.” To help with this, Adams is putting his faith in young engineers – in developing experts that are capable of understanding and communicating technical concepts - ideally borne of their own experience. “I’m a big believer in the skillset we have inside this organisation. Some of our talents rise up to be more commercial people, some will go down the project management route. If we can guide them and see which ones go
left, which ones go right - that is the only way forward.” So, he is on a mission to make Mammoet focus just as closely on its “bread and butter” customers - small and medium-sized businesses – as it does on global megaprojects. As he did in the yard, Adams wants to see the entire Mammoet organisation continue to build long-lasting, meaningful customer relationships. “The focus has got to be on this, from the boardroom to the smallest job site, in every region”. By changing its focus here and elsewhere, Mammoet can use the many assets it already has to help small and medium-sized business to thrive. With over 140 offices worldwide, distance should never be an excuse. “You would say that we are closer to most jobs – sure there is always local competition, but we should be able to be cost-effective from a mobilisation and demobilisation perspective.” Then there’s technical expertise. Quite often, smaller projects demand the engineering skill of much larger ones. “If we’re moving a 20,000t module, it’s never going to fall off the trailer.” However, when you need
“Whatever the size of the job, your business is as important to us as working with an energy multinational”
to remove façade modules from a building using its own window cleaning track or drive a suburban house down the street, specialist skillsets are needed – even though the loads themselves are smaller. And that’s where Adams notes, “it’s good to be supported by such a highly-experienced group of people”. Finally, where emergencies happen customers need fast action. Mammoet’s position as the holder of the largest fleet of heavy lifting equipment allows it to respond without delay. “If you’ve got an emergency job or something has cropped up and you’ve got to address it, then we have the resources to deliver this with our own assets, with our own toolbox, locally – without having to wait for any third-party suppliers.” Adams knows from experience what’s at stake when someone calls Mammoet, and his message to customers is clear: “Whatever the size of the job, your business is as important to us as working with an energy multinational. And no matter if the load’s a 10,000t topside or one AC unit, we have the resources, capability and backup to help you succeed.”

BUILDING IN THE STORM
THE PANDEMIC MAY HAVE HAD AN ADVERSE IMPACT ON THE REGION’S EQUIPMENT SECTOR BUT KANOO MACHINERY HAS USED THE LULL TO BUILD ON ITS STRENGTHS TO OFFER MORE TO ITS CUSTOMERS
L
ast year, as the Covid-19 pandemic raged across the UAE and the country was in the throes of the lockdowns, while many business entities - especially those in the construction equipment sector – were bemoaning the plight they had been plunged into owing to the reduced pace of construction work in the region, one company was busy using the time to revamp and equip itself for the future. At Kanoo Machinery, the equipment giant that represents brands such as Bobcat, Perkins, Snorkel and Grove Cranes, among others, keen minds arrived at the realisation that the relative slack time afforded by the pandemic could be best utilised to improve the company’s offerings to customers. In pursuance of this, Kanoo Machinery spent considerable time, effort and money last year to revamp its premises and online presence and to widen customer outreach. This includes a new spare parts section, expanded facilities and a new, user-friendly website – not to mention a new can-do attitude in resolving customers’ issues. Kannan Chandrasekaran, country manager, UAE and Oman, at Kanoo Machinery, says: “No doubt Covid-19 has been extremely challenging, for us as for every business regionally and globally. Overall, the compact equipment segment dropped by about 30% in the pandemic but even in these tough times, we increased our market share with our focus
and by giving our best to customers 24/7. “A big reason for this is our customer service initiatives. An ongoing one that has brought us results is an activity we’ve named “100% Customer Excellence Movement”. It is a set of objectives with which we wanted to give 100% customer service, which started in June 2019. It gathered steam last year when we used the relative lull of the pandemic to revamp several aspects of how we work at Kanoo Machinery, aiming to be closer than ever to customers.” Chandrasekaran says the brand new Kanoo Machinery website is a case in point for what being closer to customers entails. “The moment it opens, it says “Kanoo 24-7 support” and provides you a number to WhattsApp and a toll-free number to call. There’s also an email address for customers to get in touch with us. And this system really works. We launched this website on March 21 and we’ve seen that most customers call or contact us during the daytime. But of course we are ready to take their calls at any time and attend to their issues at the earliest. Since the website went live, we’ve received around 2-3 calls in the dead of the night. And all of them have been attended to promptly. So we’re ready, whenever a customer calls. We may not be able to send someone to their site right then if we get a call at say 2am, but at first light in the morning, a service van will be on its way with a qualified crew. So our 24-7 support is something that we are very meticulous about and very proud of.” The website was planned, designed, tested and executed over 2020, when Kanoo

Machinery upskilled itself for better customer service. And that service strives towards excellence, says Chandrasekaran. “We know that customers contacting us are looking for a quick response because in this line of work, especially, time is almost always money. If we respond quickly, what happens is that the customer is delighted with his first impression or his initial contact about a certain issue. This is vital. In the industry today, customer satisfaction is gone; it is customer delight that is the new benchmark we strive for. No longer is it good to merely satisfy a customer; now a customer needs to be delighted with their experience, and this is what we aim for in our customer interactions. Satisfaction is just meeting expectations while delight is exceeding satisfaction and further.” The new website provides contacts, names, mobile numbers and email addresses of each department, such as new equipment sales, spare parts, service, rental and used equipment - or all the five areas in which Kanoo Machinery operates operates in, he explains. “The website is designed with a lot of forethought for ease of navigation. For example, if a customer is looking for construction equipment or for related support, the tab for that. will show what we offer for the Bobcat and Sullair brands for the segment. Under each he will find the names of the contact person in-charge, with their picture, email address, landline number and even their mobile numbers for enabling instant access to the person. Then there are details about the brand and its offerings, but only very concise and tothe-point. We appreciate that our customers are busy and would not want them to spend any more time than necessary. So we have a few lines of description about, say, Bobcat, on the page, and then links to the Bobcat central website if they want more specific and detailed information about anything else. “Rather than overload a customer with a lot of information, we would rather give them a personal touch. The mobile numbers provided are of the senior managerial people at Kanoo who deal with each brand. Now, as a matter of policy, they answer all calls within four rings, with our experts standing by to speak with customers and even visit them at the earliest to advise about the best machines for their needs and applications.” There are bold commitments that Chnadrasekaran and his team are making. For example, he says that every sales enquiry will be replied to within 24 hours, that too after thoroughly assessing the application. When a customer places an order for a forklift, for example, “we don’t just ask them for the type of brand they prefer and the model they want; we do more than that”. The Kanoo team has
Country manager, UAE & Oman, Kannan Chandrasekaran (above, standing), has led the ‘100% Customer Excellence Movement’ for service, parts and customer outreach at Kanoo Machinery.
been trained as consultants and they study the requirements and come back to advise about the right product for the right application, as the customer may not always have the clearest idea about what will suit their requirements or there may be some other product they have that is even better for their requirements. “Also, for every enquiry we give the enquirer a spare parts quotation within that day if the enquiry is received in the morning, and the following day if it is received in the evening. When it comes to service, we increased our
first-time response rate to a full 100%.” The company’s parts operations have been expanded recently with a new parts counter in Dubai’s Ras Al Khor. “People looking for parts are interested in knowing how they can make a purchase. They want to contact someone and quickly find out if the part is available and how much they’d need to pay for it. To simplify this process we have an image flashing in the parts section which when clicked will lead the customer to our eight parts counters with the brand managers’ names and mobile numbers all detailed out for them there, as well as our parts support numbers for each branch in the UAE - Al Quoz, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Mussafah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and the new one in Ras Al Khor. All details are provided on the website - including a google maps guide to reach the parts counter, the names of the people in charge, emails, multiple contact numbers. etc. “We also have what we call a ‘Quick Response Team’, with the mobile numbers and pictures of all the people concerned. And this even includes my mobile number and image. This is proof that we genuinely want to provide a high standard of customer service. Customers can call anyone at any time, including the senior management, and we are all answerable to the customer. The entire quick response team is comprised of the departmental managers, so you have an idea how seriously we take customer emergencies. Everybody can be contacted and will pick up the call within four rings or provide a call back on an immediate basis.” At the back of all these changes and initiatives is the way Kanoo Machinery has refined its working style and premises internally. “Our parts department used to be a small and not very customer-friendly area previously. We have now revamped the space and made it a bright and inviting area, with information on all the brands we represent, seating and well-lit counters - a space where customers will feel the professional touch. And even if someone calls the parts department after hours, an automated message clearly guides them to obtain the appropriate numbers to call and speak directly with the person most relevant to them at any hour.” The customer feedback for these initiatives is excellent, Chandrasekaran adds. “They love it. This is because none of our competitors are offering so high a service level and such elevated involvement with the customer. In the short time that we have had this going there is a very big difference we are seeing among our customers in terms of how positive they feel about us and our principals. “Building this initiative in the storm of 2020 has borne fruit.”

COMANSA EXPANDS FLATTOP TOWER CRANE RANGE WHY GET IT? NEW 21LC600 AND 21LC650 OFFER IMPROVEMENTS IN MODULARITY THAT FACILITATE OPTIMISATION OF USE ON SITE Tower crane manufacturer Comansa has expanded its 21LC series of flat top cranes by adding two new models with load capacities that are on average 16% and 23% higher respectively over the existing 21LC550 model from which they have evolved. The new 21LC600 and 21LC650 models offer maximum load capacities of 20t and 25t and can be assembled with ranges of between 30-80m with configurations every 5m, allowing a maximum point load of up to 4.95t. Both models also incorporate an optional boom configuration that allows the total range to be extended to 85m at the tip. Comansa said that the first of the new features in these models is that they have a shorter, modular counterjib, ranging from 24.4-16.4m and having up to five possible configurations. This concept has a precedent in Comansa’s 21LC750, 21LC1050 and 21LC1400 models, and offers greater adaptation to work configuration in reduced spaces. Comansa added that another strong point of these models is the improved access to the turntable and the rotating part: the
cathead has been redesigned to facilitate the passage of lifting cables, including a welded ladder that allows access to the highest part without the need for the cab platform. Access to the cab platform is now direct via the turntable, thanks to the folding ladder, preventing falls while working on the upper level and also being easier to transport. As a standard feature, both crane models offer the double trolley system with automatic changeover (called DT in the data sheets), and incorporate, as a novelty, the optional availability of single trolley (ST) which simplifies maintenance work while increasing load capacity in short boom lengths. The height, which is self-supporting with a built-in base, can reach up to 85.8m. Also, the tower sections are 2.5 square metres for both models, said the Spanish tower crane specialist. With regard to the lift engines, the standard for the 20t versions is 50kW, while for the 25t version it is 65kW. A 110kW engine is optional for both versions, with a speed of up to 290m/min and maximum capacities of 1,570m of cable. The Effi-Plus technology, fitted as standard, significantly increases lifting and lowering speeds for light loads, shortening working cycles without increasing power or consumption. SPECIFICATIONS

SDLG DEBUTS NEW CAB FOR G9138 GRADER WHY GET IT? BETTER VISIBILITY AND ERGONOMICS, WITH COMFORT FEATURES SUCH AS AIR-CONDITIONING SDLG has launched a newly-designed cab for its G9138 motor grader to improve operator efficiency and comfort with enhanced visibility, an easy-to-use instrument panel, dust-proofing and air-conditioning. Debuted in Indonesia towards the end of last year, the company said the new cab is aimed to help workers battle the tropical heat in the country and in other places with similar climatic conditions. For customers not wanting the optional cab, SDLG continues to offer a steel canopy as standard on the G9138. Aldrin Nurdin, business manager at SDLG, said: “Greater visibility from the cab is made possible with a larger frameless front glass design. A centralised control station and instrument panel also makes operation easier.” The enhanced cab on the G9138 includes an indicator to help operators visualise the blade’s position, making work more efficient and preventing avoidable damage to the equipment. The G9138 also works with 30% bio-fuel, which enables it to meet Indonesia’s B30 mandate. SDLG said that for superior machine control, the G9138 motor grader features new rocker switches and layout. Other design changes include a larger engine hood opening, the placement of the air filter on the rear, and a hydraulic oil gauge on the outside of the cab for simple maintenance. The new cab is covered by SDLG’s standard one year/2,000 hours warranty. The machine also gives the operator precise control through a fully digital instrument panel that includes electronic monitoring. The integrated panel offers straightforward inspection and maintenance, said SDLG.

CAT 992 WHEELED LOADER UPS PRODUCTIVITY WHY GET IT? NEW LAUNCH 32% MORE PRODUCTIVE AND 48% MORE EFFICIENT THAN PREDECESSOR Caterpillar has launched its new 992 wheeled loader, a large mining loader model that offers up to 32% greater productivity, reduces maintenance costs by as much as 10% and offers up to 48% greater payload than its predecessor model. Cat said the new 992 wheeled loader, which replaces the 992K, is powered by the new Cat C32B engine with US EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V as well as Tier 2 equivalent emission engine options for less regulated markets such as the Middle East. Powertrain design enhancements to the transmission, axles and final drive, along with the new engine, deliver a 20% longer interval for planned component replacement. Cat added that the 992 offers both standard- and high-lift configurations and delivers the lowest cost-per-ton when paired with fleets of Cat 775, 777 and 785 trucks. Standard-lift payload capacities reach
23.1t for quarry face applications and 27.2t for loose material handling, while high-lift capacities reach 20.4t and 24.5t in respective applications. A new Z-bar linkage optimised for performance, and improvements to rimpull and breakout force, deliver greater machine capacity and efficiency. Cat added that the new 992 has demonstrated “up to 48% greater payload-perfuel efficiency” in field testing in applications where a four-pass match to 90.7t trucks was achieved, versus five passes with the 992K. The 992 provides up to 9.5% more rimpull during digging and up to 20% more breakout force, increasing productivity. The new Cat 992 Wheel Loader features an on-demand throttle mode to optimise payload-per-fuel efficiency without slowing production. New standard automatic retarding controls disable the impeller clutch, enable the lockup clutch, and use the implement and fan pumps retarding to slow the machine on grade. The available advanced automatic retarding controls with engine brake feature offers full control of
the loader’s speed on grade to maintain a desired hold speed, said the manufacturer. Automating critical digging cycle elements, optional New Autodig Components further improve productivity and efficiency while reducing tire wear. To stop slippage before it happens, a tyre slip prevention feature reduces rimpull before the tires are set and increases rimpull when downward force is applied to the tire. The tire set function detects pile contact and automatically lifts against the pile to set the tires and increase available traction. The lift stall prevention feature automatically manages rimpull in-dig to prevent hydraulic stall while lifting through the face, so the 992 spends less time in the pile. SPECIFICATIONS

NEW CAT RM400 ROTARY MIXER WHY GET IT? IMPROVED OPERATOR EFFICIENCY AND INCREASED PRODUCTION WITH 19% MORE POWER Caterpillar has launched its new RM400 Rotary Mixer, which replaces the RM300 and offers many new features and enhancements including 19% more power, an enhanced operating environment, and better manoeuvrability. The manufacturer said these features help contractors achieve demanding job specifications in both full-depth reclamation and soil stabilisation applications. The machine delivers a 2.4m cutting width and weighs in at 23.5t. Power comes from a Cat C9.3 engine, making 417hp, while standard all-wheel drive utilises four independent drive pumps for maximum torque while providing high traction and greater speed for moving around job-sites. The operating length of 9.56m is 44cm shorter than its predecessor, the RM300. The shorter length improves manoeuvrability in commercial zones, parking lots, and residential areas, while also enhancing visibility, said Cat. A full left to right sliding cab enhances side-to-side viewing to the tyre edges and rotor cut lines for improved operator efficiency and increased production. Standard front and rear facing cameras viewed through a display in the cab provide good visibility, while optional side mounted cameras provide good sight lines along the machine for enhanced safety. Additionally, optional cameras can be mounted in front and behind the rotor chamber. The front camera assists the operator when cutting close to obstacles such as manholes and curbs, while the rear camera provides a good view of the discharge material. Viewing these cameras from the operator’s station requires an additional touch screen display.

STICK TO THE PLATFORM FLOOR Do not sit, stand or climb on the platform guardrails. Operators should always maintain a firm footing on the platform floor. If an operator is required to reach an overhead work area that is too small for the platform guardrails to allow access to, the use of a MEWP manufacturer-approved device, specifically designed to provide additional access to confined spaces, is recommended.
DO NOT EXIT HIGH PLATFORMS Do not exit an elevated boom or scissor lift platform unless a rigorous and robust risk assessment indicates that this is the safest and most effective means of accessing a particular location and you have been properly trained to do so. In this case, you must maintain 100% tie-off at all times and must be in possession of an approval letter from the manufacturer that provides the proper guidance.

KEEP THE GATE SHUT Lower the platform entry mid-rail or close the entry gate before operating a MEWP. Never operate a MEWP if the platform gate does not latch properly or the entry mid-rial is either absent or not in proper place. Never tape or prop the entry open, and never open the gate or mid-rail while the platform is climbing or already at height.
KEEP THE FLOOR CLEAR Keep the platform floor clear of debris. Scrap materials, buckets, large toolboxes and other items can cause a serious tripping hazard — you should remove any item from the platform that is not absolutely necessary to do the work that is being performed at that moment.

ON THE RISE
THE ACCESS SECTOR CONTINUES ITS STEADY PROGRESS, WEATHERING THE IMPACTS OF COVID-19 WITH APPROPRIATE MEASURES WHILE INNOVATING IN THE FACE OF DEMAND FOR MORE TECH-ENABLED FEATURES AND THE DRIVE TOWARDS ELECTRIFICATION
T
he nature of access equipment is such that there is hardly a time when it is not needed. The big diggers and earthmovers can sit relatively idle in the pandemic, as can the large cranes, while the impact of the pandemic dries up the big construction and mining projects, but the humble aerial work platform keeps climbing. This is because of the nature of the beast. The AWP is by design a machine that finds usage in various applications. Whether in putting up a new building’s façade or doing the interior fitout, maintaining buildings or oi & gas installations - or even in sanitising hard-to-reach areas in these times of Covid – the AWP machine continues to find use even in our times of the ‘new normal’. Speaking of the ‘new normal’, Ian Hume, sales director, Emerging Markets, at JLG, says: “The single biggest impact is connectivity and how we have shifted over to a more virtual working life. Thankfully we have been able to leverage our digital infrastructure to keep connected as a team and also of course with our customers. Training, whether technical or sales, has predominantly moved online and I have to say the quality the JLG team and our distribution network have delivered to customers has been world class.” Elaborating on JLG’s performance, he adds: “Overall the last 18 months have been challenging for most OEMs in the regional construction sector, but I am happy that we have continued to maintain our strong market share position. The market has seen a contraction overall and so the importance of our

team and distribution partners being able to focus on our customers through training and development has been fantastic. We’ve also managed to introduce several new products over the last 18 months including our Boom Lift HC3 range and our Driveable Stock Picker Range (DSP), where the customer feedback has been very encouraging.” Despite the pandemic JLG has continued to bring new products to market. The company’s range of HC3 booms give the user a full working envelope with three people in the basket.
“Another drive in the market is electrification of equipment. A few years ago, the feedback was that the Middle East will be a very late adopter of electric alternatives to the diesel machines, but we are seeing this conversion move very fast. JLG now has a range of rough terrain articulated boomlifts powered by lithium batteries and before the end of the year we will launch our Electric Rough Terrain (ERT) scissor range. For the ERT range we are already seeing strong demand especially for the ERT4769, which will allow
JCB’s entry into the access equipment market has only been a few years now, but the brand has made its mark with its electric scissor lifts range powered by lithium ion batteries.
the operator to drive the machine at its full 16m working height. The ERT will feature Quiklevel Advanced, which is a dual oscillating axle that allows the machine to drive at height on slopes of up to 9-degrees. “Over the last 18 months we have increased our range of High Capacity Booms and now have six models available from 16–28m. These offer industry leading capacity of up to 454kgs and three men in the basket without compromising on the working envelope.” In terms of connected and digital technologies, JLG is known to be an innovator and Hume points to the company’s Augmented Reality (AR) and JLG Mobile Control apps. “Designed for construction pros who require a safer, more efficient and more productive job site, the AR app delivers the data you need for faster, more accurate project planning and onsite equipment management. The mobile control app allows operators to have a better view of the jobsite while moving equipment, which helps improve safety and reduce potential damage to the work environment.” Over at JCB, the foray of the brand famous for earthmovers into the access sector with a line-up of scissor lifts has recently come with a measure of success. John Chandler, sakes director, Access, at JCB says “Our most popular products are the S1930 and the large electric scissor lifts, the S4046E and S4550E. These are highly utilised in large distribution facilities. In the near future JCB will launch a range of rough-terrain articulated lifts and straight booms. These will be driven by various power sources including diesel, hybrid and electric.”
BOOMING AHEAD
JLG LAUNCHES NEW BOOM LIFT JLG has launched the new 450AJ HC3 boom lift, adding to the JLG Hi-Capacity product line that includes articulating and telescopic boom lift models with platform heights ranging from 12.19-26.21m. Designed to offer more flexibility to get work done at height, the 450AJ HC3 has a 45-ft (13.72 m) platform height and 25-ft (7.62 m) horizonal outreach. It also features the HC3 product line’s three capacity zones — 660 / 750 / 1,000 lb (299.37 / 340.19 / 453.59 kg), giving it the ability to carry up to three occupants and tools to height in every zone. Complying with the latest ANSI A92.20 / CSA B354.6 industry standards, the 450AJ HC3 boom lift is equipped with the company’s
innovative zero calibration, automatic load sensing system. To enhance safety and eliminate guesswork for equipment operators, this feature keeps the machine within the allowable work envelope by limiting range depending on platform load. It alerts an operator when the allowable limit of the work envelope is exceeded and enables the operator to boom down or retract into a safe zone to continue working. And, the zero-calibration feature eliminates the need to use external weights to calibrate the machine, saving time and effort because the machine can be recalibrated to
full capacity without placing a 1,000lb (453.59 kg) load in the platform. “JLG has engineered load sensing
technology that is advanced enough to allow operators to respond to an overload situation, quickly and easily,” says Randi McClure, marketing manager for boom lifts at JLG. “By removing or unloading items from the machine’s platform, for example, the 450AJ HC3 model will recognize when it’s back within its rated load capacity, then enable operations to resume without the need to recalibrate the machine.” The 450AJ HC3 boom also includes a chassis tilt alarm that alerts the operator when the machine is on a slope greater than five degrees.

A defining feature of JCB scissor lifts is lithium batteries, and the brand was among the first to introduce this power source in the MEWP market. “Lithium provides several benefits, the first being the batteries are far more sophisticated and last up to three times traditional batteries. The batteries enjoy ‘spot’ or ‘opportunity’ charging and work up to twice as long on a single charge,” Chandler says. “The S1930E is our most popular model but we are seeing good interest for our two largest models – the S4046E with a 40ft platform and

our flagship S4550E with a 45ft platform.” Speaking about the customer support JCB enjoys, he adds: “The product are, of course, backed by one of the strongest dealer network in the regional market. JCB has a long-standing, competent and highly respected network of dealers throughout the middle East. All these dealers have jumped at the chance to sell our range of access equipment and have invested in training for their teams to be able to support the products and our customers in the field. And we also have great relationships with
rental companies, built up over many years of supplying other products in the JCB portfolio. “Another area where JCB excels in is Telematics, electronic aids and safety. Always known to have a very effective telematics suite for its machines, JCB’s new range of booms will have the option of JCB Livelink as well as an electronic “Secondary Guarding” solution. The secondary guarding feature will be a key safety device to assist in the avoidance of crushing incidents. This will be standard on all booms which we will supply cross all territories,” Chandler says. Meanwhile, at Haulotte, electric again is the buzzword. The company has launched two new PULSEO all-terrain scissor lifts that are electrically driven but offer the same level of performance as diesel machines, with working heights of up to 13m, load capacity of 750kg and the ability to be deployed on slopes with up to five-degree gradients. The French powered access heavyweight said that the launch of the new HS15 E and HS18 E models are part of its “blue strategy”, and integrate unique features, widening the range of possibilities, both in terms of applications and working independence. “Their fully electric architecture offers the same outstanding drive performance of an

SMALL WONDER
SKYJACK INTO LOW-LEVEL ACCESS WITH ELECTRIC MICRO SCISSORS Skyjack has introduced its first new “micro scissor” with quiet electric drive for low-level access work, designed to easily fit through tight spaces and low floor load ratings. The global access equipment major said the new micro scissor has two variants depending upon the market regulation: the SJ3013 for the ANSI market, and the SJ3014 for the CE market. According to Skyjack, the new micro scissor “represents a significant new presence in the low-level access arena” and combines low cost of ownership with Skyjack’s product support. Kristopher Schmidt, product manager, Skyjack, says the SJ3014 boasts a 14ft platform height and a working height of 20ft and is made with the feedback
internal combustion diesel machine. This new generation of scissor lifts reinforces the direction taken by the Group in recent years towards versatility and environmentally friendly alternative energies,” said a spokesperson from Haulotte. The PULSEO scissors are designed to maximise battery life with the 48V battery pack delivering the range necessary for a full day of work. Three charging solutions adapt to the on-site infrastructure, with the primary charger recharging the batteries at the end of
from the European market in mind, while the ANSI SJ3013 caters more for the demand from the North American market with a platform height of 13ft and working height of 19ft. The crucial difference is that the SJ3013 is wind rated for one person, while the SJ3014 prioritises further reach over wind rating. Skyjack also chose direct electric drive in response to growing demand for low level powered access equipment with increased duty cycle expectations. The micros provide up to 25% gradeability, fully proportional drive and lift controls, and limited maintenance on wheel motors. “We’ve thought about the best way to introduce a micro scissor lift to our product line-up for some time now. The micro combines some features
from our DC scissor lifts, including our new ECOTRAY leak containment system, and the versatility that comes with a wind rating that increases fleet flexibility and electric drive that provides improved duty cycles,” says Schmidt. Commonalities across both standards include variable speed rear-wheel electric drive, a 20” (0.5m) roll-out extension deck, consistent torque even at its maximum 25% gradeability, and is rated for two people. The overall compact size was achieved without compromising the generous work area and favourable GVW, which gives it the ability to fit on most standard elevators, confined workspaces, and the SJ3013 easily fits through a standard doorway without folding its rails.
the shift from any standard 110-230V single phase electrical network, an optional threephase accelerated charger ensuring an 80% charge in only three hours and a removable and interchangeable range extender to rapidly recharge the batteries while the machine remains fully operational. One range extender can be used on different HS15 E or HS18 E. Moving on to Genie, the Terex AWP brand, Sharbel Kordahi, managing director of Terex Equipment Middle East and sales director for Genie Aerial Work Platforms in the Middle East,
Among the most popular access equipment, Genie’s new E-drive electric powered scissor lifts have created a stir with their low maintenance and long battery life, ideal for indoors.
South of Africa and Russia, says: “Last year was a hard one for the equipment world but 2021 has started very well. We’ve seen a big uptake on the purchase of equipment, especially for maintenance jobs and on the end-users side. We’ve noticed that now most buyers are now very careful in choosing equipment that sees a proper return on investment and they only want to buy quality products with good resale value and with a low total cost of ownership, which has become very important. “At Genie we launched the J-series in 2020 and also our E-Drive scissors, which took our scissorlifts from hydraulic drive to electric drive. Both machines are already available for purchase here in the region, but we are planning a proper formal Middle East launch event for both these products, waiting for the Covid situation to ease further before we plan.” He explains that the E-Drive electric scissors replace the traditional hydraulic drives with electric ones and result in 30% less maintenance, much more efficiency on batteries, much greater reliability and almost no leaks and spillage and no hydraulic oil consumption, as it does away with the entire hydraulic drive system. The diesel-powered J-series is Genie’s ‘performance boom’. “It’s not our popular XC range, which is like the Rolls Royce of boom lifts, but it’s like a workhorse and still high in capacity at 300kg platform capacity. It’s a machine with a jib, it weighs less and also requires less maintenance while being more economical in price. So, the J-series is mainly for outdoor work and the E-Drive better suited for indoor jobs owning to the
35 nature of the machines.” Genie also launched its Z45 FE machine last year. The FE stands for fuel-electric, which makes it a hybrid, the latest in the FE line. “The Z60 FE was launched earlier and was a big success. Now we’ve launched the Z45 FE, which employs the same technology and methods.” The Middle East is not known for taking to the latest equipment quickly, especially the more modern electric ones, but Kordahi says this has not been the case with the E-Drive machines. “The E-Drive scissors are actually less complicated because of lower maintenance requirements due to the nature of the E-Drive. And a lot of sites now look at a machine in terms of what happens to it in case it breaks down. Also, there is the concern about leakage of hydraulic fluid in more traditional machines. Both of these concerns are mitigated by the E-drive.” Coming to Genie’s telematics suite, Kordahi says: “When we introduced it, our telematics system was really a revolutionary one for the industry. We have further improved it now and made it available on all our scissors and booms. Our new Access Manager app is a diagnostic tool in a handheld device that service managers can use.” Genie also recently partnered with Galadari Trucks and Heavy Equipment for the UAE and Kordahi explains: “Since 2010, we’ve been looking for a strong partner in the UAE. Traditionally in the UAE, all the rental companies were very strong into also selling. But now most of them are focusing on their core function, which is rental. And the market
Maker of the world’s highest ultraboom lift, Snorkel also has a wide range of articualted booms and scissor lifts on offer to suit a variety of applications in different spheres.
has changed dramatically since then. People are now looking for total solutions - they want finance, service and comprehensive back up support, which only an experienced and qualified dealer can provide. So, since Terex has had a good relationship with GTHE for many years, we started our discussion with them and by the end last year we already had a dealer agreement finalised. It’s been very successful since and they have really taken the product on in all its aspects, such as service and finance, and have made
a very good first impression.” When it comes to boom lifts, especially those with the very high reach, Snorkel has recently stolen a march on its competitors with its new 2100SJ, a “mega boom” that offers a working height of 66m, reaching the equivalent height of a 22-storey building, and is ideal for high-rise construction and maintenance tasks. Describing the world’s tallest boom lift model, CEO Matthew Elvin says it has patent pending static axle transformation, which uses wheel motors to ‘drive’ the axles into their extended position, minimises the risk of tyre scrub, extending tyre life and providing a smoother experience for the operator. The Snorkel 2100SJ is also highly manoeuvrable, with a 2.5m inside turning radius, claimed to be best-in-class, and five steering modes, including lateral steer, which enables the lift to drive side-to-side along a building with the wheels in a 90° position. “Compliant with all global standards, the Snorkel 2100SJ has transport dimensions of 2.5m wide and 14.9m length, and for safer loading, is equipped with a removable RFcontrolled lower control panel designed to be operated remotely, either tethered or wireless.” Weighing 36,287kg and rated for outdoor use up to 12.5m/s, it is equipped with an anemometer to measure wind speeds. The Snorkel 2100SJ has redundant, isolated, emergency power supplies to provide at least three alternative options to rescue an operator up to the maximum platform height. The model will enter production in 2021, and Snorkel is currently accepting pre-orders.
GENIE’S TECH MAGIC
RENTAL COMPANIES CONTROL MACHINE ACCESS WITH ACCESS MANAGER Rental companies now have the option to remotely manage access to their fleets — improving the security of their equipment on the job-site — by utilising Access Manager, a new add-on feature that works with the Genie Lift Connect telematics. Now, any unit equipped with Lift Connect can be retrofitted to include Access Manager, allowing rental companies to expand the benefits of their Lift Connect system. “When a unit is equipped with Access Manager, an operator must enter a code before they can start that unit, ensuring that only authorised operators can operate the machine. Not only does this provide greater security for equipment, it also can help ensure only trained
operators have codes,” says Christine Zeznick, Genie Director of Product and Business Development, Telematics, Terex AWP. “ An Access Manager works by assigning a unique code — which can be randomly generated or personally selected, much like an ATM pin code — to an individual operator through the Lift Connect portal. That operator then can be assigned to specific equipment. The unit then can be started only when an operator enters an authorized code on the Access Manager keypad, or when they use an authorized Access Manager RFID card,
which can be purchased separately. Because Access Manager is designed for jobsite use, the keypad has been
intentionally designed with durable, highly tactile buttons that are easily pushed even if the user is wearing work gloves. Concurrent with the launch of Access Manager, any machine that currently has an active Lift Connect subscription and a CAN control system will have the ability to use the new Remote Disable functionality. Remote disable, which is separate from Access Manager, will allow the owner to remotely disable or enable operation of their equipment through the Lift Connect portal, providing equipment owners additional opportunities to remotely manage and secure their fleets.

GETTING A GRIP
OFF-THE-ROAD TYRE MANUFACTURERS ARE TRUSTING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT TO COME UP WITH TYRE MODELS THAT ARE MORE ROBUST AND DURABLE, AND USING THE LATEST CONNECTED TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE THEIR PERFORMANCE AND LIFESPAN
T
he small contact patch that your behemoth of a construction machine has with the ground - those few square inches of rubber – is actually the make or break part of the machine; not it’s robustness, horsepower, breakout force, lift capacity, telematics or any other parameter. With this knowledge, specialist off-the-road (OTR) tyre manufacturers have been pushing the rubber for long to extract the firmest grip, the best performance and the longest endurance out of their products. Take Magna Tyres, for instance. Starting production only in 2006, it has indeed come a long way and left its indelible tread marks on construction, mining and other off-highway sites all over the world. The Dutch OTR tyre brand manufactures all fast-moving sizes for wheel loaders, dozers, rigid and articulated dump trucks, port and handling equipment, cranes and more of various wheel sizes. Vijay Nambiar, GM for the Middle East, Africa and Indian subcontinent at Magna Tyres says: “We have cut resistant and heat resistant products to suit all operational requirements with the highest tonne-kilometres per hour (TKPH). Magna Group’s wide range in sizes are from 25-57 inches. In addition to our Radial options, some Bias variants are also obtainable for price-conscious customers.” Nambiar says that among the milestones that the company has marked over the last few years is its 15th anniversary and the move to its
new head-office in Waalwijk, The Netherlands, with a huge warehouse facility of 58,000sqm. “Magna Group has also expanded its production line in The Netherlands and Thailand factories, apart from launching a new pattern of 20.5R25 M-Terrain tyres. The introduction of a 3-star rated RDT tyre in size 24.00R35 was the first of its kind in the industry.” The recent growth may have been arrested somewhat by the Covid-19 pandemic, but Magna has already taken measures, he adds. “The pandemic has surely affected all globally and Magna is no different, but we’ve made use of technology to sustain our business and are doing well in this difficult time. To ease access to Magna on a 24/7 basis, we launched our online portal for all existing and prospecting customers which helps them see our products and interact directly with our respective country managers. In the Middle East, we have grown year-on-year in 2020, and maintained the trend in 2021. Key challenges currently are port congestions, but we are able to meet most of our customer demands through regional stock availability, which contributes to growth.” Magna’s most popular products in the regional earthmoving segment is the 27.00R49, which is available in MA04, MA04+ and M Rigid patterns. “This is our most sought-after size. Our tyres have been validated for high performance in various mine operations in different countries and have returned the lowest cost per hour in operations, owing to premium quality at a very competitive price. Also, a bias option is available in the MB440.” Magna’s recent introductions are its M Stacker range (M Stacker and M Stacker+) for

port applications. The new range has enhanced tyre life, now longer by 32% compared to earlier products. When it comes to new technologies, Nambiar says Magna has introduced its tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to enable total tyre management with very little human interactions at the operation level, avoiding contact. This can also serve as a remote diagnostic tool to alert customers of potential problems and avoid downtime. Recently, Magna has appointed additional dealers in Saudi Arabia and in the seaport segment, made large volume contracts in the Middle East as its M Stacker range launched successfully, along with its “super performing” M Terminal for Terminal Tractors, backed by OEM business from renowned brands like Terberg and many more, informs Nambiar. Meanwhile, at JASPA, Pranay Mehta, division manager, says the company, established in 1981, specialises as a solutions provider with an array of tyres and allied products suited for the Middle East’s environmental challenges. “Headquartered in Dubai, we maintain over 50,000sqft of closed warehousing facility and have the ability and infrastructure to supply to any part of the world through our logistics hub. The company is proud to be the sole representative of world-renowned brands like Alliance (Yokohama off-highway tyres), Longmarch, Boto, RoadX, Nexen Solid Tyres, OKO Tyre Sealant and Roadwest. JASPA has a strong presence in the UAE and Oman and is one of the market leaders for truck radial tyres in the region with the Longmarch brand.” Describing the brands that form JASPA’s portfolio, Mehta adds: “Alliance is a well-known
JASPA represents some of the best known global OTR tyre brand such as Alliance, and has several tyre care products, like puncture repair kits, for heavy duty tyres for tough applications.
brand of Yokohama Off-Highway Tyre, Japan. Alliance stands out for providing applicationspecific and purpose-built aftermarket and OEM tyres. With 75-plus years of expertise, Alliance makes over 1,000 specialised tyres, each carefully engineered keeping the latest technology in mind. From mines to factories, Alliance tyres offer solutions for various necessities. The tyres are manufactured at two state-of-the-art facilities in India and with a presence in 120 countries on six continents the brand has gained trust and reputation as

Boto manufactures 100,000-plus radial OTR tyres for construction and earthmoving equipment. In our region, the Hajar mountains offer unique challenges to the crushing and earthmoving companies in the UAE and Oman, and Boto’s engineering team frequently visits the region to study the operating conditions in detail and their analysis is useful in designing and selecting the right compound while manufacturing the tyres. It’s no surprise that the tyres are a perfect choice for the OTR segment in the region.” Another major brand in JASPA’s stable is OKO Tyre Sealant, which has a reputation of over 40 years as “Original Tyre Sealants”. “Manufactured in the UK, OKO products are proven to combat punctures and help avoid expensive downtime in the equipment industry,” Mehta says. “The MENA region has always been important for JASPA and with promising opportunities in the construction, infrastructure and allied markets, we are optimistic about a long-term vision to contribute to the region’s future. Our portfolio of OTR tyres has evolved over time and today we work with major fleets and equipment rental companies, offering reliable and trustworthy products and solutions and, most importantly, impart knowledge and technical know-how on performance
THREE-STAR TYRE
MAGNA TYRES UPGRADES MA04+ RANGE Magna Tyres introduced its first ever ‘three-star’ rigid dump truck tyre last year in an upgrade of its MA04+ range, increasing payload by 8%. The Dutch-headquartered company announced that it has added the new 24.00R35 to its MA04+ line-up, making it available in the three-star version in addition to the existing two-star one. According to Magna Tyres, the potential of its latest development is “tremendous”, and it is the first step in the upgraded generation of Magna’s rigid dump truck tyres. The increase in payload equals an extra 9t in capacity per dump truck, which has the scope to provide a huge increase in productivity when considering the number of cycles
made daily, Magna Tyres added. “After years of research and hours of technical analysis, Magna Tyres managed to launch its first ever three-star rigid dump truck
tyre,” said a statement from the tyre maker, adding that the new model is part of its upgraded MA04+ range, which has provided many dump trucks worldwide with superior
performance since its introduction, enabling the movement of countless loads of raw materials. The proven tread pattern of the MA04+ has turned out to be the right basis for the further development of the range. The first production of the new tyre was completed in July last year, Initially in the 24.00R35 size with more sizes to follow.. “The next level Magna MA04+ ensures customers a stronger tyre, with more rubber in the contact patch, and better and additional steel liners, which will result in increased load capacity. It allows mining operators to increase the productivity and continuity of their earthmoving operations,” said Magna.

OKO TYRE SEALANT
SEALING THE DEAL OKO Tyre Sealants with a vast experience of over 40 years have a reputation of “Original Tyre Sealants”. Manufactured in the United Kingdom, OKO makes tyre sealant for a plethora of Military and Civilian applications. OKO Sealants are proven to combat puncture and avoid “Downtime” which is expensive and inconvenient, especially for the construction industry. The sealants are formulated for various applications ranging from bicycles to heavy duty mining. OKO prevents punctures and stops tyre deflation as the vehicle or equipment moves. The puncture sealing depends upon centripetal acceleration. Centripetal acceleration in the case of a moving
vehicle is the force of the tyre’s circulation, and it imparts a huge pressure which combined with the sudden loss of air – when a puncturing object causes a hole, forces the OKO violently into a small space. The squeezing effect causes OKO to deploy as it is designed to do, turning it from a liquid into a flexible but very strong solid that seals the hole almost instantaneously. OKO Mining X-TRA Heavy Duty is formulated for use in large tyres and is proven to seal holes in the tread area of the tyres in the very harshest off-road conditions. In large tubeless tyres OKO can seal holes in the tread
enhancement, increasing tyre life and selecting the right product for the right application, which has been a grey area in the region.” Mehta adds that all brands JASPA represents consider the Middle East as a very important market and are consistently dedicating resources to tailor-make products for the region. The manufacturers visit the region regularly to study the market and operating conditions to ensure the suitability of products to the challenging Middle East conditions. JASPA has the support of its dealers and reseller network, with which it has long-standing relationships. Indeed, it has been associated with its Oman and UAE distributors for decades now. “JASPA also caters to the complex ecosystem of fleet and equipment rental companies by offering end-to-end solutions for their constantly evolving needs. Our core competency is our in-house technical team. We do rigorous product testing to check suitability for the application with stringent standards. Our longstanding goal is to offer information parity to help customers make informed choices. Pursuing this we conduct training, performance management and product recommendations, supporting customers in selecting the product most suitable for their needs.” Meanwhile, at BKT, one of the leading global OTR tyre makers and suppliers to the big OEMs, joint managing director Rajiv Poddar emphasises the Middle East market by saying: “We have our entire product range available in the region. Mainly, though, the industrial, construction and mining tyres segments have really picked up. Underground and opencast mining are big areas for us, as are tippers and
area up to a diameter of 20mm. OKO has invested heavily in independent testing, using meaningful protocols. To assess whether its seal is genuinely permanent, a strength test was carried out by the world-renowned military testing institution, Gerotek.
the low-platform trailer (LPT).” Among BKT’s most significant recent developments is SPOTECH, an innovative device able to provide exact information on the equipment’s position traced by satellite. It can be programmed and tailored to the application site volumes and type of equipment in use. “All information obtained by SPOTECH enable the creation of a real study on tyre usage according to their effects and impacts on the piece of equipment it is fitted on. In the field of OTR, for which this device has
BKT has spread out globally from its home in India to now be counted as one of the preemminent OTR tyre makers, especially for the huge earthmoving tyres for large mining trucks.
The tyre industry recognises one ‘permanent’ repair type: vulcanising. On testing vulcanised, plugged and OKO-sealed punctures to destruction, the Institute found that OKO was 1.6 times stronger than vulcanisation: and seven times stronger than the widelyused plug repair approach. It is an ideal product to the construction and earthmoving industry to combat downtime of their equipment. The products are used in high demanding applications like military, mining, construction and Earthmoving industry. The products are approved by many military services around the world.
been originally designed, equipment generally performs repeated cycles. This enables to assess the TKPH value, i.e. a dumper’s strength by analysing the weight that is transported on average and the distance in kph. Basically, a higher TKPH index means that a tyre is not suitable for the application in use, whereas it is perfect if the result is lower. The BKT experts can assist users by offering suggestions in order to correctly interpret the data and to intervene, if necessary, with corrective actions on the tyres.,” says Poddar.
TREADING HEAVILY
BKT INTRODUCES NEW EARTHMAX SR 412 FOR HEAVY EARTHMOVERS BKT Tires has introduced the Earthmax SR 412, it new tyre designed for articulated dump trucks, loaders and dozers. According to the company, the new tyre offers greater stability and resistance to damage as its main qualities due to a robust casing and all-steel belts, which enables the Earthmax SR 412 to transport heavy loads while avoiding tears and punctures. The tread has a unique design with an E-4 depth for high levels of traction and high heat resistance, while the square shoulder gives the new tyre a more solid grip on the ground. Available in 29.5 R 25 and 750/65 R
25 sizes, the Earthmax SR 412 is designed for dump trucks, wheeled loaders, wheeled dozers and graders. BKT says the tyres in this range are “true partners in the toughest operations, guaranteeing these vehicles better load distribution on the ground and ensuring comfort, safety and stability” for end users. Originally launched in 2008, the Earthmax range now numbers over 20 different product lines with numerous models and sizes. According to BKT, the Earthmax models are especially suitable for mining and quarrying applications and operations on large job-sites, owing to the all-steel structure which characterises all the tyres in this range.
