The Middle Road The road of excess may lead to the tower of wisdom, but old wisdom has it that truth is usually found on the middle path. Contextualising that to the Middle East’s construction equipment sector, there are plenty of voices crying themselves hoarse about impending doom, given the unrelenting doldrums that the market finds itself in, and even some contrarians shouting from the rooftops about how rosy things are. While these are both extreme positions – and those who hold them will no doubt gain wisdom when they find out that the reality is not actually as they perceive it – the truth, as always, is that the marker is neither as good nor bad as it’s made out to be. Just ask the people at Access Hire Middle East, who set up shop in the Middle East in the middle of this year. The Australian Access Group-owned kit rental major has come in with a kitty of $500m to invest in the region, with a fleet of 5,000 pieces of equipment. If such a heavy investment at a time when the market is not supposed to be doing well is a surprise, then the astonishing bit is that Access Hire Middle East, part of a group known for powered access equipment, is embarking on a new track in the region with a fleet of JCB construction equipment. The company recently took delivery of a large order of telehandlers and backhoe loaders from the British brand, with plans to add more in future. Access Hire Middle East head of operations Robert Carson tells us more about the move and what prompted it on page 22. Speaking of backhoe loaders, the Middle East’s love affair with the two-in-one machine continues unabated. We take a look in this issue at what the backhoe segment

offers and why it remains popular despite most other segments registering slides. With the region’s penchant for using the backhoe at every opportunity – indeed, inventing new uses for it – the major manufacturers are in a race to both decrease cost and increase features. Increased features are what some new heavyweight launches from key global marques are offering. Caterpillar recently introduced its Next Generation 36t excavators, the second weight class to get Cat’s Next Gen treatment of improving efficiency and lowering fuel consumption after the 20t, which was unleashed on the world with much fanfare at around the same time last year. Meanwhile, Volvo CE has updated its wheel loaders in the H-Series, offering Middle East job-sites even greater performance. Updates in the industry can be seen at this month’s The Big 5 Heavy, being held for the second time this year, this time along with The Big 5 and Middle East Concrete. While many big names from last time are conspicuous by their absence, the event is still going ahead. The truth, as ever, lies in the middle of all excess. It’s the best of times and the worst of times!

Really good to hear that the global construction industry is expected to see a rise to $12.9 trillion in real value terms by the year 2022 expanding by an average of 3.6% per year from 2018 until then, with the Middle East region leading the growth. While I can’t confess that I’m in a position to validate whether the Middle East and Africa region will be the fastest market with an annual average growth of 6.4% from 2018 to 2022, you would hope that a recovery in the oil price will help put money into the region’s economies. The last 20 years has seen a lot of investment but it has ended up in only a handful of cities. My hope, if these figures are correct, is that we will start to see investment in other areas that need it. I believe the developers and construction industry in the UAE, in particular, are ready to spread their wings across the region, and hopefully they will be delivering projects across the region over the next 20 years not just in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Atlas Copco has expanded its 8-Series compressors with the addition of XAS 88G which combines a source of compressed air with a 9kVA built-in generator in what it claims is a pioneering concept of its 8-series compressor/ generator combination range. The Swedish manufacturer said, the new model, with others in the series, is designed to optimise fuel consumption in-line with load demand. Hendrik Timmermans, VP, Atlas Copco Portable Air division, said: “This technology means end-users benefit from

full-shift fuel economy, even when all sockets and outlets are in operation. There are a number of key applications where the presence of an on-board generator adds real value to our customers by minimising the amount of equipment on site and ensuring they’re never without power.” The XAS 88G is also equipped with an alternator that delivers 100% imbalance in single phase mode, and a rotary screw compressor element that produces 7-bar (100psi) air at a Free Air Delivery (FAD) rate of 5m3/min (175cfm).

AMCS systems at work in major Dubai project

The Island District area of the Dubai Creek Harbour construction project being built by developer Emaar Properties is seeing 59 cranes being managed by the DC60 anti-collision and zoning systems supplied by AMCS technologies. The system manages the largest number of cranes to avoid interference in one location for 9 different contractors. Anti-collision systems are also being continually installed for any new tower crane

going up and all crane are connected with each other with radios, said AMCS. The complexity of this project is based on the proximity of the cranes of different types such as luffing jib and topless cranes, which creates many areas of interferences. The construction site can face collisions between jibs, jibs and counter-jibs as well as jibs and cables. Radoine Bouajaj, sales director, AMCS Technologies, said: “Anticollision and zoning systems are essential for this spectacular project, managed locally by our exclusive dealer in the UAE, A and Z technologies represented by Abdelrahman Saafin. The DCS 60 guarantees site safety by managing prohibited areas and interferences between cranes.”

POTAIn dEBuTS nEW WInCHES Manitowoc has introduced a new range of High Performance Lifting (HPL) winches for Potain tower cranes, designed to increase speed, control and efficiency. Global construction industry to grow 3.6% per year until 2022

The global construction industry is expected to rise to $12.9tr in real value terms by the year 2022, expanding by an average of 3.6% per year from 2018 until then, with the Middle East region leading the growth, according to a report by the worldwide data and analytics company GlobalData.

In its latest report, ‘Global Construction Outlook to 2022: Q3 2018 Update’, the company reveals that construction output will go up worldwide from its 2017 level of $10.8tr, with certain regions registering faster growth than others. Danny Richards, construction lead analyist at

GlobalData, said: “We forecast that global construction output growth will accelerate to +3.6% in 2018, up from 3.1% in 2017, reflecting the recovery in the US as well as general improvements across emerging markets. In South and South-East Asia, for example, construction in

India has regained growth momentum, while the pick-up in oil prices has supported the recovery in the Middle East and Africa.’’ The Middle East and Africa region as a whole will be the fastest with an annual average growth of 6.4% from 2018 to 2022. The report said that the GCC countries, which have suffered from the weakness in oil prices greatly reducing government revenues in recent years, are expected to see a return to growth. As oil prices pick up, large-scale investment in infrastructure projects - mostly related to transport - will be a key driving force behind the construction growth in the region, the report added.

KIT SPOTTING NOVEMBER APRIL 2016 2018

Wirtgen rebuilds brazil highWays W irtgen‘s W 200 large milling machine has put in a convincing performance in rehabilitating two main highways between Sao Paulo and Brazil’s largest port. The Anchieta-Imigrantes motorway system is the main link between the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo and the port of Santos, the largest port in Brazil and the busiest in Latin America. Construction of the Anchieta motorway began in 1947, with Imigrantes following at the start of the 1970s. Today the Anchieta handles mainly heavy goods traffic – 95% of its daily traffic consists of trucks – while cars predominantly use the Imigrantes. Now the two motorways are being rehabilitated over a total length of 300km. It was the removal of the surface and binder course that was handled by the Wirtgen W 200. The high proportion of heavy-

goods vehicles and the significant traffic density place enormous strain on the asphalt surfaces, making regular maintenance vital. The contract for the current job was won by the Baixada Santista Consortium. The construction company CR Almeida, which is part of the consortium and responsible for the milling, worked alternately on both roads – northbound and southbound. While the W 200 milled the Anchieta motorway, which was closed completely, traffic was diverted to the Imigrantes motorway. For this mammoth project, CR Almeida deployed the W 200, running in continuous operation 24 hours a day during the rehabilitation work. This is where the powerhouse really had its enormous capabilities put to the test and came out with flying colours. That’s because the W 200, with its engine delivering a maximum power of 410kW, is specially configured for high area outputs – whether on

large sites or in confined spaces. The manoeuvrability of the large milling machine particularly proved its worth in the very narrow defiles that snake their way through the Brazilian uplands 40km south of Sao Paulo, so that the W 200 was able to mill both road surfaces over a width of 2m and to a depth of 8cm in one operation. Milling machine operator Janderson de Souza Mota emphasises the ease of handling offered by the WIDRIVE machine control system, which links the most important machine functions together: “While the engine sets the operating speed automatically when the milling process is started, it automatically returns to its idling speed when milling is finished. This allows us to reduce not only fuel consumption but also noise emissions.” Moreover, the water required for cooling the cutting tools is regulated as a function of the engine load and milling speed. The load-dependent

sprinkler unit allows a water saving of up to 20%. “For us that means we need to fill up less water, but the service life of the cutting tools is still longer,” says site manager Cleiton Farias de Jesus. With the milling work on the Anchieta motorway having been completed faster than anticipated, the W 200 even made up time before it was to begin its scheduled night-time job on the Imigrantes motorway. So de Jesus and his team stopped at Cubatao, just a few kilometres away, to mill a strip a few hundred metres long over a working width of 2m, but this time to a depth of 28cm. “The site is on the way, and the fact that we can load and unload the W 200 quickly and easily enabled us to fit this little job in.” The folding loading belt shortens the transport length of the large milling machine, so that it can be transported even on light low-bed trucks with a low overall weight.

GCC countries, typically the more prosperous in the region, have low levels of mineral resources in contrast to international mining hubs such as Australia, Canada and Indonesia. Nonetheless, countries like Jordan and Egypt are steadily developing their capacity to extract their reserves of phosphates and potash. Last month, the MENA Mining Show was held in Dubai World Trade Centre with a few thousand visitors and exhibitors attending the show, which caters to the mining industries of the Middle East and North Africa regions.

Exhibitors comprised renowned firms from the construction and mining machinery sectors, with the likes of Stevin Rock, CDE Global and Al Futtaim Colas in attendance. CDE Meta, the dedicated mining division within CDE, and the company’s CustomCare teams joined CDE’s regional team in MENA to showcase CDE’s wet processing solutions at their first major exhibition in the UAE at The Mining Show Dubai. This was CDE’s first time attending the show, and with over 100 sponsors – CDE was a Silver Sponsor - and exhibitors present, CDE took centre stage displaying its latest screening solutions. CDE showcased their H2-60 Infinity screen, which was the showstopper at the event. The 4.5 X 1.5M double-deck screen caught the eye upon entrance to the exhibition hall, attracting lots of visitors to the stand, all keen to learn. “With its weld-free design prolonging operational life and strong but light galvanised side walls, the screen efficiently separates up

to three fractions without any risk of product cross-contamination. It can generate the same acceleration as conventional screens, whilst the unique design of the eccentric shaft further removes unnecessary weight, reduces power consumption and ensures the efficient transfer of energy to the material. The CDE-patented U-Span cast cross members, in combination with the construction of the side walls, deliver higher specific stiffness that prolongs the working life of the screen,” said Adam Holland, head of mining, CDE Global, who had come down to attend the event from the company’s headquarters in Cookstown, Northern Ireland. Holland also delivered a keynote address and roundtable discussion with some prominent figures on opportunities to gain value from mining waste. “Having a strong, talented workforce with the relevant skills behind the CDE B10 stand played a key role when meeting and greeting

15 visitors; this became a valuable advantage in learning more about customers’ demands and needs,” he says. “Most interestingly, the materials our visitor’s process primarily fall within the expertise of our Meta team and ranged from gold, copper, and bauxite. We also showcased our Primo solutions to visitors interested in the wet processing of sand and gravel. Our water management solutions were also of great interest to those in attendance, in particular, the AquaCycle thickener which can recycle up to 90% of wastewater. Continuous interest from attendees built the momentum at the show and through extensive conversations, CDE was able to present and offer solutions to new and existing customers and showcase its impressive equipment. We’re already looking forward to the 2019 edition of the Dubai Mining Show.”

Asphalt contractor Al Futtaim Colas is involved in several key road projects in the UAE, especially around the buildup to Expo 2020, says Alistair Muir, UAE operations manager (left).

Another exhibitor of note was Al Futtaim Colas (AFC), the regional arm of the global specialist asphalt contractor. Alistair Muir, UAE operations manager, said his decision to bring his firm to the mining exhibition was driven by AFC’s ambition to expand its ooperations and showcase an environmentally safe dust-reduction product. The high levels of construction and infrastructure building activities in the Middle East further encouraged AFC to attend the show. “Our operations in the region are in the UAE, Oman and Qatar. Our primary business here is of course road construction. And we also have two quarries in Ras Al Khaimah where we produce the aggregates,” Muir expalined to CMME. “One of the most prestigious projects we have recently done is the Formula 1 race track on Abu Dhab’s Yas Island. As an asphalt specialised contractor it is just the sort of

job that we excel in.We also specialise in infrastucture facilities such as airports. “We’ve got a lot of interset at this show in Colas’ environmental product for dust reduction which is the focus of our stall. It’s a specialised product that we’re using in quarries and it results in the minimising of dust at such operations.” Muir adss that the road-condition sector in each of the GCC markets is an important factor his company’s operations need to account for. “The demand for road infrastructure is important for us to consider before entering a new market. This edition of the show is a good opportunity for us to roll out our services and inform the market in detail about us. “Opportunities in Saudi Arabia have gained attention from international firms since the government renewd its pledge to spend on infrastructure. in the Kingdom has grown significantly as well. Saudi Arabia is also working on several urban infrastructure projects, such as the King Abdullah Wa’ad Al-Shamal City project, worth $9.6bn in various investments and agreements. The project includes construction of factories and roads, as well as other facilities. It has been touted as the world’s largest ever for the mining industry and is expected to provide up to 6,300 jobs in the country. Our expertise in developing roads and infrastructure, as well

as in quarrying, can stand us in good stead in projects of this nature.” AFC’s stronghold, however, remains the UAE, and especially Dubai, and Muir adds: “Despite a relative slowdown in the region, Dubai continues to build roads and infrastructure. The projects associated with the Expo 2020 are especially important and they actually spread out to well outside the Expo area. For example, the Dubai Metro’s 2020 line under construction begins from

the Marina-JLT area. The new metro line also includes associated road developments, such as those in the Discovery Gardens area, where we have already executed extensive projects. “We continue to go full steam ahead in the region, especially in the UAE. In Dubai, we are executing several projects in areas spread out over the city. This event gave us the opportunity to highlight our projects and reach out to prospective clients in the region and beyond.”

Well-knoWn for its poWered access fleet, australian-oWned rental services provider access Hire Middle east Has just taken delivery of a big order of jcb construction MacHinery as it eMbarks on a neW line of rental operations. CMME talks to tHe tHree parties involved in tHe deal

I

n May this year, Australian rental heavyweight Access Group announced an expansion into the Middle East with an investment of $500m in a fleet of over 5,000 machines. The move, despite coming from one of the biggest names down under in the powered access rentals business, did look a trifle foolhardy on the surface, given the condition of the Middle East equipment market at this time. However, going by the group’s track record, they can be expected to have done their homework right. Part of those 5,000 machines that Access Hire Middle East (AHME) - the group’s newly-formed arm in the region - is investing into is a bit of a surprise package: a fleet of construction machinery. Powered access products have been the traditional operating segment for Access Hire, so this foray outside seems a bit of a departure from the company’s core competence. Not so, says Robert Carson, managing director, for the Middle East region at AHME. “We spotted a gap in the market for high-quality equipment and therefore made the changes to fill this gap,” he tells CMME. “In terms of preparation for this change to the business, we have researched and found the best equipment to suit this industry prior to investing in the expansion of our fleet. With the addition of the new equipment, we have retrained our employees

23 A major player in powered access equipment rental, Access Hire Middle East is entering the construction equipment rental space with JCB machines, seen here in its yard.

“We looked for the highest-quality equipment with the fastest cycle times and safety standards that could withstand this region’s harsh environment. We are already familiar with JCB products and we specifically purchased JCB machines to ensure industry leading reliability, quality product support through its dealer GBES and also for the residual value in the regional market”

RENTAL SECTOR NOVEMBER 2018

“At Access Group, we understand the market challenges very well, and we also understand the demand for high-calibre equipment rental companies in this region. We looked to fill the void where others did not” on how to operate the equipment safely and how to service and maintain the equipment for longevity.” Anything less thorough would not have been expected from a company of AHME’s stature, especially with an investment of $500m behind it. And the “best equipment” that Carson alludes to is a fleet of more than 50 new JCB machines, comprising backhoe loaders and telehandlers. But before we discuss the expansion, Carson gives us some background about the Access Group and its track record. The Access Group is a leading international supplier of plant and equipment to all industries, he explains. “Founded in Australia in 2000, our equipment knowledge and business acumen ensure a streamlined provision of premier products and services to any stage of a project’s life cycle. The company provides services such as hire, sale, servicing, transport and training to both onshore and offshore projects. “AHME is a division of Access Group Australia and commenced trading in the UAE around the middle of this year. Our hire fleet now includes a huge range of elevated work platforms, telehandlers, generators, forklifts, backhoes, air compressors, nitrogen membranes, boosters, desiccant driers, lighting towers and more, ensuring that AHME can deliver on various industry projects of any size in sectors such as oil & gas, mining, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure.”

JCB dealer GB Equipment Solutions, supplied 50-plus machines to Access Hire, comprising backhoes and telehandlers, complete with a special cake (below).

Apart from its Australian hire, sales, servicing, transport and training service delivery, and now its Middle East presence, the Access Group also has international bases in the UK, China, USA, and Malaysia, he explains. “AHME boasts one of the largest fleets of privately-owned access, material handling, and oil & gas equipment. And it’s a young and robust fleet, with an average age of just 2.1 years, to ensure total reliability and quality. “Our fleet is made up of market-leading brands including Genie, JLG, Atlas Copco

and Royal Forklifts for complete reliability of the best equipment available on the market. And of course, we have now added another leading name to that list – JCB.” To establish a machinery fleet in the Middle East, “we looked for the highest-quality equipment with the fastest cycle times and safety standards that could withstand this region’s harsh environment”, reveals Carson. A clear choice emerged, he explains: “We are already familiar with JCB products, and we specifically purchased JCB machines to ensure industry leading reliability, quality product support through its dealer GB Equipment Solutions (GBES), and also for the residual value in the regional market. Almost all JCB’s components and parts are made inhouse, which provides the critical service of parts and low lead times that AHME look to acquire for efficient operations.” The 50-p[lus-units strong order comprised JCB’s 540-170 and 535-125 telehandlers, TLT30D 4X4 Tele trucks and 3CX-ECO backhoe loaders. The units are all high-spec ones with additions including reversing cameras and radar systems along with side shift and quick hitch options, and various safety features, among others. Several machines have been immediately deployed to support the Expo 2020 project, along with several other key projects in the region, Carson says. “As JCB develops new products, we will look to include these in our fleet to meet demand, including the addition of excavators

25 and wheel loaders. We will continue to build on the existing relationship with JCB.” Now that the buying has been done, the support has to follow, and Carson is confident of AHME capabilities in this regard. “Our technical support service is at the forefront of our business. We have a range of 2WD and 4WD service vehicles and trucks that are stocked with genuine spare parts and staffed by factory-trained mobile mechanics. Our 24/7 service fleet also includes mine-spec vehicles, which allow our mechanics to go everywhere and anywhere for professional on-site servicing and repairs. Offering complete service solutions has always been a corner stone to our success and a key part of any hire agreement is getting equipment where it needs to be, cost effectively and on time. Our dedicated transport division allows us to satisfy both these criteria.” And of course there is JCB and GBES with their firm support. “We are fully confident about the GB-JCB combine providing us exceptional service as needed when it comes to spare parts and training in order for us to offer our best services and maintain the fleet.” Carson’s words are reflected at GBES, where the focus is to provide a complete 360-degree equipment solution to all customers, says Ehsan Ansari, marketing manager, GBES. “For us it’s not just selling a machine but also giving our customers a complete equipment package. Our sales team is always focused on our customers’ needs,” he says. We utilise our market intelligence and advise customers on the best solutions for their needs. Post sales, GB Equipment Solutions is the only JCB dealer which offers free of charge machine health-check. Our highly-trained product support experts

are always in the field visiting customers and carrying out machine inspection. This gives important insights into the machines’ health. We aim to prolong machine lifecycles so there are fewer breakdowns and least downtime.” Providing JCB’s view, Rajbir Sandhu, district manager, JCB sales Middle East, says: “The order is quite a big one and comprises backhoe loaders and telehandlers. AHME chose JCB because of our reputation in these two machine categories. Our machines are proven performers here in the demanding conditions of the region, which was definitely a consideration for AHME when it came to placing their order. “JCB has proved that our machines can last, which is very important for a rental

Access Hire’s Robert Carson (right), and Mazen Abdul Baki, general manager, GBES, seal a relationship of trust with their handshake at the delivery of the JCB machines.

company. They also look at residual value for disposing off the asset after a period of time. JCB scored on all these counts.” Chris Britt, JCB’s major accounts manager, Middle East, adds: “AHME is very professionally run and they are bringing in best practices from Australia, combining them with Rob Carson’s knowledge of the region to adapt to conditions here. “They have their own maintenance team and a fantastic facility, and they are capable of doing maintenance up to a high level. We have trained their new engineers and technicians on how to work with JCB equipment, but all of their tech people have prior experience with JCB equipment, which means they are now thoroughly familiar with the new machines that they need to upkeep. Our training will be ongoing from now on, as we share our new advances with them and as we bring in new models. “Of course, almost all the support to our customers comes from our dealer GBES, and we support the dealer as and when required. We will step in if there is anything really major, but that’s seldom required. The spare parts also reach the customer via our well-stocked dealer, who is supplied from our central parts facility for the region in Jebel Ali, Dubai. So AHME is in very capable hands with JCB and GBES.” The last word, though, belongs to Carson: “At Access Group, we understand the market challenges very well, and we also understand the demand for high-calibre equipment rental companies in this region. We looked to fill the void where others did not, with a manufacturer and its dealer that provide the service and support needed to maintain the machines.”

JLG announces X33J PLus comPact crawLer boom Why get it? HigH unrestricted platform capacity and wide work envelope Powered access specialist JLG has announced that its new X33J Plus compact crawler boom (CCB) is now available. The latest of four JLG CCB models, it brings the CCB line into the 30m height class. “The revolutionary X33J Plus demonstrates JLG’s continued commitment to delivering the industry’s broadest range of access equipment,” said Jan-Willem van Wier, senior product marketing manager for JLG in EMEA. “This newest addition to our CCB line allows operators to reach greater heights with increased machine flexibility to navigate more spaces safely.” The extended work envelope now encompasses 17.20m of up-and-over height and 16m of horizontal working outreach. Its compact footprint allows the X33J Plus to fit through a standard double doorway for easy movement between indoor and outdoor applications. Retractable non-marking tracks and a patented platform disconnect system make it easy to manoeuvre the machine through tight spaces. The X33J Plus is less than 5.80m long and under 1.20m wide when the platform is removed. The new model also offers an unrestricted

platform capacity of 230kg. JLG says this is class-leading and allows operators to bring more materials to the work area, creating a safer and more productive work environment. Among its new features, an articulated column design gives operators the ability to work flush with the surface of a structure. Simultaneous movements are enabled by smart technology, improving boom functionality. Added reach is a given with jib movements of +/- 90 degrees. One-touch self-levelling outriggers stabilise and level the machine on slopes of up to 16 degrees. Stability is further enhanced by large, Teflon-coated outrigger pads, while standard forklift pockets and lift hooks allow easy loading and unloading. Powering the new model is a standard Kubota diesel engine, while an advanced technology 150aH/76 Volt lithium-ion system is available to provide clean, quiet operation and performance comparable to, or better than, traditional gas engine power. The X33J Plus also comes with fully synthetic, biodegradable hydraulic fluid for use in environmentally sensitive areas. JLG says the new machine is ideal for tough, hard-to-reach indoor and outdoor applications, such as, arenas, auditoriums, airports and civic and military facilities. SPECIFICATIONS

A new training suite for bulldozers from CM Labs, a developer of simulators to train crane and heavy equipment operators, aims to give new operators an immersive simulation experience. CM Lab’s new Dozer Simulator Training Pack addresses common beginner challenges like setting blade angle correctly and learning how to maintain material in front of the blade, says the developer. Advanced training exercises are also included, allowing such operations as excavating drainage inlets and transversal ditches, as well as trailer loading and unloading. According to the company, what sets the new simulator pack apart is the way it allows trainees to “experience the unique feel of pushing soil and aggregate material”. This immersive feedback is provided by simulating the interaction between all of the simulator’s virtual elements – the soil, blade, transmission and engine. These represent all the changing variables that affect operation of the machine in the real world. CM Labs says when the six-way blade touches the soil in this new sim, the transmission and engine on the simulated dozer engage and react in a way that closely mimics the real thing. The tracks on the simulated dozer can even slip based on operator behaviour, allowing trainees to learn precision techniques and efficiency.

HigH fuel efficiency, ease of use tHrougH automatic retarder control, low noise levels Caterpillar has re-introduced the 40t size class in its articulated dumper line-up with the launch of the new Cat 740 GC articulated dump truck (ADT). The global construction equipment leader said in a statement that the new model is designed to incorporate the features and performance of models currently in the ADT line-up, including new controls, transmission-protection features, hoist-assist system, advanced traction-control system, stability-assist system and a fuel-saving ECO mode. The 740 GC also incorporates the latest automatic retarder-control system, which requires no input from the operator, resulting in greater operating efficiency. For added control, the new model also features a wait-brake, which temporarily applies the service brakes during pauses in the work

cycle, reducing operator effort and fatigue. Also, a hill-start system automatically holds the machine on grades, allowing the operator to move from the service brake to the throttle with no roll-back on slopes. Cat also said the driver and cab environment of the new ADT has received a lot of attention. The 740 GC cab features the new external spinal-ROPS found on other Cat ADTs in the range. This cab incorporates rear-quarter glass that eliminates a structural pillar, resulting in enhanced rear visibility. Also, a wake-up feature initiates machine displays when the door is opened. The door itself is lighter and stronger than previous designs and more effectively seals against dust infiltration. The overall cab design results in interior sound levels of 72dB(A). Useful for the Middle East, an optional infrared glass reduces solar heating inside the cab, and left- and right-hand sliding windows increase ventilation while also facilitating communication with workers and the loader operator. An automatic climate-control (HVAC)

system positions more vents above and behind the operator for increased cooling efficiency. An optional heated/cooled seat provides added adjustments that allow operators to dial in personal comfort settings, and a second seat with added cushioning now uses a flip-up/down design to provide additional cab storage. The new 740 GC uses the Cat C15 ACERT engine available in configurations to meet emission standards of both highly regulated (HRC) markets and less regulated (LRC) countries such as in the Middle East. For the LRC markets, the engine produces 449hp. The three-axle ADT’s transmission is the Cat CX38B and its drive configuration is 6X6. SPECIFICATIONS

tadano mantis comPLetes Gtc series with 50t crane Why get it? one-truck crane for easy transport, full radio control and versions witH more options Tadano Mantis has introduced a new 50t capacity crane model that completes its GTC series of five telescopic boom crawler cranes covering the 35-120t capacity range. The GTC-500 lifts 50t at a radius of 2.5m, and its four-section full-power main boom measures 34.7m fully extended. The maximum lifting height is 51.9m with the full main boom and fly jib. The crane is powered by a 6.7l 260hp straight six-cylinder Cummins QSB6.7 turbo diesel engine. The new model is designed for easy transport and is a one-truck crane that weighs in at less than 46.72t, the maximum weight for a standard truck load in markets such as the US. Other versions are available with standard and extra counterweight packages of 7.8t and 12.7t. A bi-fold jib is standard, as is a cab that tilts 20 degrees. The Opti-Width function maximises capacity at any track width setting through 360 degrees. Full radio remote control is now available across the GTC range. Other options include an auger, a work platform and a cold weather package to -40 degrees Celsius. The GTC-500 joins the 35, 60, 80 and 120t capacity models introduced since development started in 2012. First launched was the 120t model at the 2014 ConExpo show in Las Vegas. The best-selling model this year is the 80t GTC-800, having taken over from the 120-tonner which held the title in 2017.

Doosan Construction Equipment’s latest excavator model has a super long-reach boom, making it suitable for jobs such as excavating lakes, drainage work, digging in sand and gravel pits, slope forming and other long-reach work. The new DX225SLR-5 has an 8.5m boom and a 6.2m arm, giving it a maximum digging reach of 15.38m, a maximum digging depth of 11.65m and a maximum digging height of 13.08m. The bucket digging force is 10t, while that of the arm is 6t. A six-cylinder, turbocharged Doosan DL06P water-cooled diesel engine powers the model, which has an operating weight of 24.4t, and gives it a high power output of 166hp at 1,800 RPM. Doosan said this results in a combination of super long-reach capability and high performance with reliability and durability. “With the DL06P engine, the DX225SLR-5 ensures trouble-free performance as it operates without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). As well as the DL06P engine, which is one of the most reliable and

fuel-efficient ever produced by Doosan, new innovative and exclusive features have been introduced, providing an overall 9% increase in fuel efficiency,” said the manufacturer. “Among these features is the new Trip Meter Setting screen, which allows operators to check fuel consumption daily (or over a desired period) directly from the control panel. To save even more fuel, there is a special Doosan-developed system, Smart Power Control (SPC), to optimise the balance between the pumps’ output and the diesel engine.” An Auto Shut-Off feature saves fuel and warranty hours by shutting down the engine automatically after it has been idling for a period of time set by the operator. The excavator also comes fitted with DoosanConnect, the company’s multifunction telematics system. The cab on the DX225SLR-5 is bigger than the previous model’s and has been refined for “outstanding operator comfort and ease of operation”. The features offered as standard include “super controllability” with a system that enables attachments to be operated from either the joystick or a two-way pedal. SPECIFICATIONS

01 MaiNTENaNcE schEdulE To keep track of the maintenance requirement of your backhoe loader, you need to create and follow a maintenance schedule with notations on how often each part should be inspected for problems, repairs and general maintenance. Be consistent with the maintenance schedule and inspect the equipment thoroughly.

PrOPEr clEaNiNg After a day’s work, clean the parts that made the most contact with the soil and debris. Also, ensure that the engine oil and hydraulic fluid system stays clean. This is necessary to ensure that dirt and debris do not damage the delicate parts of the BHL, resulting in costly repairs. The mantra is the cleaner you keep your BHL, the better it will perform.

If you hear noise from the system pins, bushings, bearing joints, etc, you need to grease those parts. There can be several joints that require daily or weekly greasing.

chEck sTrEss POiNTs Some points on the backhoe loader experience more stress and are more prone to stressrelated failures. Be sure to check around the backhoe and the loader arms, where the machine is heavily stressed. Cracks in the paint could indicate cracks in the structure itself and need to be inspected before additional use.

07 10 clEaN ThE cabiN In several BHLs available in the Middle East, the operator’s cabin can seat an extra person. With most of these cabs air conditioned, operators and the person accompanying them spend long hours in them, sometimes napping and taking their meals inside. This leads to spillage and debris that, if not cleaned, can accumulate and get into vital systems and components, causing failures.

I

f there is anything that the present conditions of the Middle East’s construction equipment market have shown us, it is this: when the market gets tough, the backhoe loader gets going. Typically, the multi-applicability of backhoes is sought after in countries – especially developing economies – where there’s significant amounts of infrastructure work taking place. And a backhoe is a solid investment for a contractor, since the machine will be useful whatever the next contract is. The backhoe loader (BHL) is one of the most utilised machines in the Middle East, and – similar to the skid steer loader – it’s probably safe to claim that new uses and applications for the machine are found nearly every day, given the variety of roles it has to perform. And even when the chips are down in the industry, this epitome of versatility is still managing to push the numbers and has become the best-selling category for many manufacturers. Of course, the first name that comes to mind when you say backhoe loader (BHL) is JCB, the British brand that almost defines the sector and has become the generic name for the BHL is many markets. Rajbir Sandhu, district manager, JCB Sales, Middle East, who is in charge of JCB’s operations in the region, says: “It’s no secret this is not exactly the best of times for the regional economy. We had a feeling the market would bottom out this year and then we could hope for a slight rise going

ahead - which is how the cyclical economy works - but that has not happened. “Despite these pressures, the backhoe segment is still holding up reasonably well and we are still growing market share. And the backhoe loader remains our biggest volume pusher; we sell more of these machines than any other equipment. In terms of volume we improved on our 2017 performance this year and also increased our market share, which was already more than 50% in the Middle East’s BHL segment. One out of every two BHLs sold in this region is a JCB.” Speaking about the reason for the BHL’s great popularity in this part of the world, he says: “The BHL is a fixture in developing markets. If you look at India, it is the most common piece of equipment you can find. And JCB has around 79% market share of that huge market. In fact, in India when people mean ‘backhoe loader’ they say ‘JCB’. Our brand is the machine’s generic name.” JCB has a stranglehold on the Middle East BHL market as well, having cornered more than half of it. And similar reasons apply here, not only for the BHL’s popularity but also for JCB’s in the sector. Offering a succinct explanation about why developing markets plumb for the BHL, Sandhu says: “When we started out in India, our main competition was manual labour, which was abundant and cheap. Contractors soon realised, though, that what they payed extra up front to replace their labourers with a BHL, they more than made up for in the productivity gains. The Middle East market mirrors India’s conditions to a

large extent. Therefore, it is natural that BHLs are so popular here too. “JCB’s success in India owes a lot to our early mover advantage. And our reputation there has spilled on to the Middle East as well, helping us to take a big lead in this market. Of course, it helps that our BHLs are market leaders in terms of quality, reliability, robustness, features - the entire package. “What enables us to maintain such high quality is that we do almost everything in-house. With JCB designing, testing and manufacturing the complete drivetrain – axles, transmission and engine – for our BHL product lines, it means we are in complete control of quality and can ensure a perfect match of components that enables us to deliver the key demands of our customers – reliability, ease of use, productivity and aftersales support. “JCB has the highest percentage of in-house components. Our closest competitors produce maybe around 10-20% of their components themselves and source the rest from suppliers to assemble their BHLs. For us, the position is reversed. We manufacture around four out of every five component that goes into our BHLs. This allows us a degree of quality control that no other manufacturer can offer, and it shows in the machines.” Describing JCB’s range, Sandhu adds: “Our range starts with the 1CX, a very versatile machine that is excellent for maintenance, civic and landscaping jobs. It’s built on a fixed platform, so it moves like a skid-steer loader. And there is also a tracked version. It’s an innovative BHL approach that only we offer. “The 3CX is our largest seller. It’s the right

size that a customer needs for the most varied kinds of jobs. It’s an 8.5t machine, which gives you a full range of applications for small jobs. The 4CX is an even bigger machine. It has a powerful 100hp engine and you get a bigger excavator and bigger wheel loader, with power to match for more heavy-duty applications.” When it comes to service, JCB is again on the ball. “We invest a lot in our network and our customers are always assured of the best support. builT for The region The 570T backhoe loader is the latest addition to Case Construction’s BHL range. The 570T has been designed to win over customers looking for productivity, versatility and fast return on investment, with a number of machine features set to attract fleet owners and operators. Case’s Franco Invernizzi, says that the 570T is aimed at the general construction segment, especially road works projects. “The Case 570T can play a quite effective and main role due to its high productivity, economical fuel consumption and durability, equipped with high standards of ergonomics

features which contribute to a more convenient working environment for the operator and supports in fulfilling his duties in a more productive manner. Customers are always looking for a simple, reliable and costeffectıve tool, and definitely they will find this machine matching their needs to the maximum.” The backhoe is powered by the FPT Industrial S8000 Series engine, which provides superior performance, high torque and best-in-class fuel economy. The turbocharged, four-cylinder engine delivers up to 64.1kW (86hp) and relies on the fuelefficient engine technology of

sister company FPT Industrial. The engine is equipped with an air-to-air aftercooler system that optimises air induction with benefits in terms of efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. The Power Shuttle transmission provides four speeds forward and reverse, and delivers up to 402Nm of torque at just1300 rpm with enough power and torque to get the job done in less time. At the front, the S-shaped boom has been designed for premium digging and lifting performance. Its heavy-duty structure ensures strength and durability with thick, multi-plate fabrications, castings and forgings.

This made-in-India machine has shot to the top strata of the sales charts in the BHL segments and now makes up more than 80% of Case’s BHL sales volumes. Franco Invernizzi, senior business director, Middle East and Africa, at CNH Industrial, explains: “At Case we have actually done better than the market in terms of growth, and the biggest driver of that for us has been the BHL, and for two main reason: the first is that the BHL market has been more resilient than other classes in the slowdown; the second is that we have gained market share in BHLs with the right model.. “We have the right machine for this region at the right time. Our 570T and 570ST are made in our India plant and have an excellent price point coupled with the right features. It’ a reliable machine with very low and easy maintenance, and it’s a great fit for jobs that BHLs are needed to do in the region now. “Apart from the 570T/ST, we also have the 580T/ST, the 590ST and the 695ST. These are made in Italy at our plant in Lecce. We are offering our full range in the region, but right now more than eight out of 10 of our sales volume is made up of the 570T. “The situation was just the opposite two years ago, when European-made models made up the volumes, not just for us but other brands as well. JCB 1CX

The swiss army knife of backhoes The smallest member of JCB’s BHL range is the 1CX, which is a versatile, multi-use rnabout with some special features. Rajbir Sandhu explains: “The smallest BHL we have is the 1CX, which is like the Swiss army knife of BHLs, because you can fix an array of attachments to it. It is also on a fixed platform like a skid-steer loader and also comes in a tracked version. “A big selling point is that the 1CX is equal to two machines - a BHL as well as a skid-steer loader. We are the only company that manufacturers such a machine. It’s a very unique product. “It mainly finds use in maintenance and landscaping jobs as well as in civic jobs with municipalities. We sell many of those in Bahrain and Oman, as well

that made-in-India would mean lacking in quality. But in these two years, the market has tried the machine and realised our 570T has proved to be just as high-quality and reliable as all our other Case products - and to some extent sturdier. So, it has become very popular.” Coming to the business aspects of things, Invernizzi reveals some key operational changes for Case in the region. “We recently changed our distributor in Saudi Arabia, which remains out biggest market in the region despite dropping off its earlier peak levels. as in the UAE. When cities start growing, the demand for the 1CX increases for maintenance jobs. “It’s not a very high-volume product. Instead it’s a niche market product, but it’s still an innovation we are known for and defines the JCB DNA of innovating.” JCB says that the 600kg loader capacity 1CX can turn on its own axis in order to work in cramped environments and it’s fitted with a universal skid steer quickhitch allowing for a full range of skid steer attachments to be fitted easily. Full servo-controlled hydrostatic transmission gives zero to maximum speed, both in forward and reverse, at full power.

new distributor is Auto Arabian Agency. The CNH Group has a long-standing relationship with them as they were the New Holland distributors. We’ve just replaced New Holland with Case. They have made a big investment in a full set-up for back-up and the move has already given results: our Saudi market share is on a steady upward climb.” He adds that what is helping a lot, not just in Saudi but throughout the region, is the way Case has streamlined the availability of parts, using its Dubai parts distribution hub in Jebel

After having introduced its first BHL ever in 2016, the compact equipment specialist has reaped the benefits in terms of being able to offer the entire compact package. And now it’s taking the BHL story forward. “Bobcat is bullish about the BHL and we are looking to the future,” says Gaby Rhayem, Bobcat’s regional director, Middle East and North Africa. “A huge move by our company

BoBCaT B730 & B750

riding on The mid-range Bobcat’s backhoe loader range comprises four models – the B700, B730, B750 and the top-of-the-line B780. While the B700 is an entry-level model, the top-of-the-range B780 is a highly-manoeuvrable machine with four equal sized wheels and is steered by three steering modes: 2-wheel steer, 4-wheel steer and crab steer. “The main sellers in the range, though, are the B730 and B750. In Saudi Arabia, the B750 is leading around 40% of the sales. Some customers who bought one machine from us have come back to place 2-3 repeat orders, which means they are very happy with their purchase,” says Rhayem. Powered by a 100hp turbocharged engine, driven through a standard

powershift transmission, and controlled by mechanical levers, the B730 model is equipped with 18-inch front tyres and two-wheel steer. Double loader bucket cylinders provide superior breakout force and reduce maintenance cost with bolt type cylinder head design. Apart from all the features of the B730, the B750 adds 20-inch front tyres and a hydraulic joystick control system. The standard 4.4l, four-cylinder, 100hp turbocharged diesel engine delivers adequate power for demanding applications, while reducing operating costs. It also features a high-quality filtration system for longer life, and its single-side service components make maintenance easy.

39 is the recent acquisition of a BHL factory in India. We have invested substantially into the facility and will soon start producing Bobcat BHLs there, at first for the local market, where the BHL is big business. The first machines will roll out around December 2019. “While not immediately for export to the Middle East, machines produced there will come to our region within the next couple of years. Also, we are looking forward to several good things in 2019 in our BHL range. Bobcat’s BHLs are made in Turkey, and from next year they will be even more ‘Bobcatised’, if I can coin that term. This means that we will infuse it with more Bobcat DNA, improving their technical aspects as well as some design aspects. “It has only been two years since Bobcat entered the BHL market, and we’re already looking ahead with new developments, new technologies, new production facilities and, possibly, new models. We’re investing millions of dollars into our BHL business and this shows how serious we are about the category.” Within Bobcat’s four-pronged model range, comprising the B700, B730, B750 and B780, the middle two have found the most traction in the Middle East, he says. Feature like a power shift box and the option to have an AC cab are some of the reasons behind this. “While it is clear that the overall market is down in the region, we see that the BHL has still not lost as much ground as some other categories. But whatever the state of the market, we cannot let anything detract from the level of service we offer our customers. And, as ever, we have Bobcat’s legendary support through our long-standing dealers who have

established our compact equipment, such as skid-steers, as the best-sellers in the market,” Rhayem says. When we turn to the competition from China, the top name that pops up in the backhoe loader business is SDLG. The brand is owned by Volvo CE, which provides it some distinct advantages. When Volvo CE took over the Linyi, eastern China-based company, the Swedish giant stopped producing backhoe loaders, instead transferring the technology to SDLG. Late last year, SDLG launched the B877F,

designed especially for the Middle East and Africa. This F-series, sideshift backhoe loader is half a tonne lighter than its predecessor, the B877, and features a new engine, greater cab space, and enhanced cooling capacity, as well as state-of-the-art loader linkage and other improvements. Henrik Sjöstrand, SDLG product manager, says: “SDLG backhoe loaders always receive a great deal of interest in the Middle East and Africa, and for good reason; they are extremely versatile and efficient machines. Whether you’re operating the loader or the excavator, the new B877F has the power and manoeuvrability to handle almost any job. Those looking for a high-performing, reliable, easily operable and cost-effective backhoe loader need to look no further than SDLG. “Customers can purchase the B877F with either a multi-purpose or general-purpose loader bucket, together with an extendable or standard arm,” informs Sjöstrand. “There is also a wide range of attachments to choose from, such as various sizes of excavator buckets and flip over forks. The B877F can be equipped with additional hydraulics if needed.” The B877F is fitted with a 70kW Yuchai, made by Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group. It features the same power as the machine’s previous engine but offers much higher torque. Access to the engine is made easier through a larger, rear-hinged engine hood. The B877F has also been fitted with a larger radiator for improved cooling capacity in hot climates. When it comes to service, SDLG is supported by some of the best names in the region, such as Volvo CE dealer FAMCO in the UAE. .

Caterpillar unveils its two next Generation 36t exCavators that deliver more ChoiCes for inCreased effiCienCy and lower operatinG Costs in their size Class while improvinG fuel effiCienCy

A

t around this time last year, Caterpillar flew in its key partners from around the world and the global construction trade press to its Learning and Demonstration Centre in the southern Spanish city of Malaga to launch what it called a “game changer” – its Next Generation of 20t excavators. At the launch, Herwig Peschl, the company’s global marketing manager, told the assembly: “Game changing is what we’re about. We keep investing into our products and services to make sure we satisfy our customers by giving them what they have been asking for.” He had added that, starting with the 20t, Cat was revamping its hydraulic excavator – or HEX – line and bringing in the Next Gen machines. Damien Giraud, vice president of Caterpillar’s construction and infrastructure industries, had said: “Our intent

is to transform the industry with this new launch. If you take the excavator segment, from 10-90t, it is worth $22bn in sales globally. A manufacturer can thrive only if it thrives in the excavator business. This is why Cat has been, is and will be dedicated to bringing world- leading excavators to its customers.” It now looks like the turn of the 36t class of Cat’s HEX to go to the Next Gen after it started with the 20t last year. The recently announced Next Generation 36t size class excavators — the 336 and 336 GC — increase operating efficiency, lower fuel and maintenance costs, and improve operator comfort compared to previous models. The new excavators offer unique combinations of features designed to match contractors’ productivity and cost targets, says Cat. At the 20t excavator launch in Malaga the mantra was 45-25-15. “Up to 45% improvement in efficiency; up to 25% reduction in fuel consumption; and up to 15% maintenance cost reduction – this is game changing,” Peschl had commented then. And now, when it’s the turn of the 36t-tonners, the mantra this time seems to be 45-15-15: up

to a 45% improvement in efficiency; up to 15% more fuel efficiency; and up to 15% reduction in maintenance costs. According to Cat, delivering high-production performance, the new 336 features standard integrated Cat Connect Technology and the most power and lift capacity of the two models. The result is maximum productivity at the lowest cost. “The new 336 GC combines the right balance of productivity features with reduced fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The result is high reliability and low-cost-per-hour performance. The new Cat 336 has the industry’s highest level of standard factory-equipped technology to boost productivity. Integrated Cat Connect Technology increases operating efficiency by up to 45% over traditional grading operations,” says a statement from the manufacturer. The standard Cat Grade with 2D system provides guidance for depth, slope, and horizontal distance to grade through the standard touchscreen monitor, making operators more accurate. The system is

Standard Grade Assist automates boom, stick, and bucket movements so operators can effortlessly stay on grade with single-lever digging. Cat Payload delivers precise load targets and increased loading efficiency with on-the-go weighing and real-time payload estimates without swinging to prevent truck over/underloading. The E-fence feature prevents the excavator from moving outside operator-defined set points—particularly useful when working beneath structures or near traffic. Cat LINK hardware and software connect jobsites to the office and provide customers with machinecritical operating information. By design, Cat Next Generation excavators produce more work per unit of fuel than the models they are replacing — up to 15% more fuel efficiency for the 336. hydraulic demand to further reduce fuel usage. The cooling system features a new fan that runs on demand to keep the excavator working at the correct operating temperature for maximum efficiency - a vital feature for the Middle East. With a new electrohydraulic system built for responsiveness and efficiency, the Cat 336 and 336 GC feature a new main control valve that eliminates the need for pilot lines, reduces pressure losses, and lowers fuel consumption. Fewer hydraulic lines on the excavators result in less oil required, lowering long-term operating costs. Offering extended and more synchronized maintenance intervals, the new Cat excavators do more work at a lower cost and reduce maintenance costs by up to 15% over the previous series. The new Cat air filter with integrated pre-cleaner and primary and secondary filters has double the dust holding capacity of the previous design. The new Cat hydraulic return filter has a 3,000-hour service life — a 50% increase over previous filters. The fuel system filters are synchronised for service

at 1,000 hours — double that of previous filters. The fuel system water and sediment drains and hydraulic system oil level are positioned close together at ground level, making routine daily maintenance faster, easier, and safer. With a choice of Comfort or Deluxe cab packages, all Next Generation Cat excavator cabs come equipped with standard features like keyless pushbutton start, large standard eight-inch touchscreen monitor with jog dial keys for control, and soundsuppressed rollover protective structures (ROPS) to offer the next level of operator comfort and safety. A tilt-up console for the Deluxe cab design affords easy cab entry and exit. New advanced viscous mounts reduce cab vibration by up to 50% over previous models while automatic climate control maintains internal cab temperature settings, regardless of external ambient temperatures. With such improvements in the 36t class, it looks like Cat’s promise of a truly advanced Next Generation, as described in Malaga, is now an ongoing reality.

J

ust as wheel loaders are an integral part of the construction and equipment landscape, Volvo CE is an equally integral part of the wheel loader market. Not only is the Swedish giant one of the biggest naes in the world in wheel loaders, but it also enjoys a similar position in the Middle East region, where it is represented in the GCC countries by trusted dealers such as FAMCO in the UAE. For quite a few years, Volvo’s G-series wheel loaders had been among the most popular in the GCC market and common sights on job-sites in the region. As technology has moved on, and the demands of customers in terms of job-site performance have scaled up, the Swedes saw the need to keep pushing the improvement envelope for the G-series and give customers a better version. So, Volvo introduced the H-Series wheel loaders. Based on the proven G-Series, the new H-series is represented by L150H, L180H and L220H, which

offer up to 15% greater fuel efficiency, and the L110H and L120H, which deliver up to 20% on that score. Contributing to this increase is the next generation OptiShift, which allows operators to customise the lock-up engagement of their machines, as well as the powerful engine, attachment optimisation, and allnew dry P-brake, designed to eliminate drag losses. The improved OptiShift technology integrates the Reverse By Braking (RBB) function and the new torque converter with lock-up, creating a direct drive between the engine and transmission. Also helping to reduce fuel consumption is the eco pedal, which applies a mechanical push-back force in response to excess use of the accelerator, and latest hydraulic system, which regenerates the oil in the lift/tilt cylinder circuits and deactivates the hydraulic pumps. For stability and efficiency, the H-Series wheel loaders have been upgraded with a new transmission, which works in harmony with the engine and axles. The new converter delivers increased torque output, resulting in better performance at low speeds. For faster acceleration

and smooth operation, the steps between the gears have been reduced. Combined with the advanced load-sensing hydraulics – designed to enhance the responsiveness of attachments and improve the lifting and lowering speed of the boom – the updated H-Series wheel loaders deliver up to 10% better productivity than the G-Series. Not only are the upgraded H-Series wheel loaders highly efficient, they are also highly versatile for a wide range of applications – from material handling and waste and recycling to re-handling, slag handling and block handling. Volvo’s unique Torque Parallel (TP) linkage delivers high breakout torque and excellent parallel movement throughout the entire lifting range. To minimise energy losses and maximize performance, the machines come with a choice of dedicated Volvo attachments, manufactured as an integral part of the wheel loader, with functions and properties ideally matched. The range of attachments includes forks and grapples, as well as a variety of buckets. The new Volvo Rehandling

43 buckets are redesigned with convex slides and an improved spill guard to ease filling and minimize spillage. As an option, the Boom Suspension System reduces bucket spillage, boosting productivity by as much as 20% on rough ground. With Load Assist, a dynamic load weighing system, customers can manage their work orders and easily monitor productivity. Powered by the 10in. Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen, Load Assist keeps track of the amount of material moved, ensuring profit in every bucket. Built to work hard, the Volvo wheel loaders possess a number of features that strengthen operator performance, such as the latest bucket leveling function, which allows the bucket to return to level from dump and curl positions automatically. Visibility from the cab is enhanced by the redesigned rearview mirrors and a rearview camera, available as an option. The rearview camera works with the radar detect system to warn the operator of unseen objects with a visual and audible alert.

The L110H, L120H, L150H, L180H, L180H High-Lift and L220H wheel loaders offer easy maintenance to promote high uptime. The engine hood opens electronically, enabling the operator or technician to gain full access to the engine compartment. The tilting cab can be operated hydraulically to either a 30° or 70° angle, providing unrestricted access to vital components. Daily service checks can be carried out quickly and simply thanks to grouped service points. Brake wear indicators placed on the wheels make it easy to check the condition of the brakes. The rear axle cradles contain greased-for-life bushings and bearings and so are maintenancefree. As for the cooling fan, it can be reversed for self-cleaning of the cooling units. For extended service intervals, the axles, transmission, hydraulic tank and fuel tank have replaceable breather filters – located remotely – to prevent them from dirt and moisture contamination. The brakes are outboard mounted, and the oil circulation cools the front and rear axles. To reduce

component wear, delayed engine shutdown can be scheduled to activate automatically. The new function turns off the machine when the turbocharger has cooled down to the appropriate temperature. Speaking to CMME earlier, Samer Juneidi, divisional manager, Construction Equipment at FAMCO, said: “For Volvo, the L120H, L150H and L220H are key players in their respective size classes and are often used in general construction, waste management, earth-moving and quarry operations. Volvo offerings, like TP-linkage, Optishift and Reverse by Braking, are some key standard features in this market.” No matter how advanced a machine though, after-sales back up is essential to maintain uptime, and Juneidi adds: “For Volvo, FAMCO does the trick with our strong branch network across the region ensuring optimised parts availability 24x7, while our strong technical support staff cater to customer needs. And Volvo Regional Parts distribution centre in Dubai supports us with additional parts back-up for faster response times.”

HigH Course There is no sight more majestic in the world of construction equipment than a giant crane reaching up to the heavens with its wiry framework, its elegant boom or even its huge flat jib spanning across a job-site - ropes straining to pull up a load so large and heavy, it beggars belief that gravity could be defied this way. This is a sight that is very common in the Middle East, not only in its urban areas with the sinuous, spindly spires of tower cranes building the region’s beloved high-rises, but also out in the numerous oil fields, refineries and petrochemical complexes, where the giant all-terrain, rough-terrain and crawler cranes are hoisting impossibly large components atop cliff-like plants. But behind all this, there are the manufacturers, the rental companies and all the other service providers in the sector. In this report, CMME brings you news and views of the crane sector, encompassing some of the heaviest lifting jobs in the region, components and technologies that make the sector run, some of the biggest crane fleet operators in operation, the various types of cranes and the training that make the sector run.

hile the state of the economy is most certainly having a significant impact on regional sales of cranes available on the market today, the lack of new sales does not mean that what has already been sold will not need to be kept in top lifting order. This of course is keeping the manufacturers and their dealers busy, and Manitowoc is no exception. The global crane giant, owner of such illustrious brands as Grove mobile cranes and Potain tower cranes, apart from its eponymous Manitowoc crawler cranes, is hard at work in the Middle East region to improve its after sales services to its customers through rigorous training on maintenance and technology. David Semple, Manitowoc’s senior vice president for the Middle East and India, tells CMME that while providing the best service and back-up when benchmarked to industry standards in the Middle East - or any region, for that matter – is non-negotiable at any moment in time, its assumes greater importance when the market has a downturn. “This is when customers are buying less new equipment and relying on maximum uptime from their existing fleet. And this is when we really need to support them and show them we are there by their side, so that when the economy improves, and the buying starts again, they are so pleased with us and assured of our support, that we have already made the next sale,” Semple says. Of course, with Manitowoc and its array of brands and cranes, the ‘next sale’ does keep happening all the time,

03 Manitowoc’s facility in Dubai’s Jebel ALi Freezone is a hub for the Middle East and adjoining rejions as a training, parts and support hub.

“With our training operations in Dubai, customers in the region are assured that their Manitowoc product, say a Grove mobile crane, is in the most capable hands in terms of maintenance and parts, keeping downtime to a minimum”

despite market conditions. And what contributes to this in the Middle East is the brand’s firm regional footprint, based out of its hub in Dubai’s Jebel Ali free zone. “The amount of investment we have made in the region and the amount of infrastructure you see in our operations here, especially when compared to a lot of other crane manufacturers, shows that we are here for the long run and we are committed to this region,” Semple says. “We have two big logistics centres, one in Europe and one in the US, that can deliver most parts worldwide in 48 hours. We do expect our dealers to stock a sizeable amount of parts, particularly the high-volume ones. Also, while we can deliver almost all parts in 48 hours, if the part in question is 1.5t you don’t want to get that on an airplane as that’s going to cost you a fortune. Instead, you want to get it into a container and ship it here, which will take time. So, we obviously need our dealers to have some form of local inventory in order to be prompt in tackling this. That’s the advantage

of having strong dealers, as we see a definite gain in parts availability.” Manitowoc also has a parts inventory of its own at its JAFZA premises, Semple adds. These are strategic parts, specifically those that dealers are not really expected to hold, as they are very slow-moving ones, but parts that can still be leveraged regionally. “And our dealers in the region find

Manitowoc’s David Semple (left) and Yannick Richaud are proud of the advanced, global-quality training available at the company’s Dubai facility.

that getting those parts supplied from our Dubai operations is a lot quicker, rather than having them shipped in from Europe or the US. That’s the beauty of our JAFZA facility. It does a bit of everything: servicing our mobile cranes, crawler cranes, tower cranes, stocking parts, as well as serving our training needs.” Speaking of training brings us to one of the most important focus areas for Manitowoc, and also brings in Yannick Richaud, the company’s Middle East crane care director. Explaining the entire training process at Manitowoc, especially at the Dubai facility, he says: “We have a curriculum consisting of various courses. We start with two very basic courses called Crane Technology and Crane Systems, and these are designed to get people familiar with all the various parameters, such as whether the load chart is working, what are the different elements that make up the crane, etc. “Once these two courses are taken, which are common to all product lines, whether it’s a crawler crane, a roughterrain or all-terrain, then depending on the product line, you have several further levels of courses. Finally, we have the highest level, called the Master Technician. For each course there’s an agenda and then at the end you have a test, which you need to pass to go to the next level. Of course, the Masters certification is our highest level.

05 “For our all-terrain line-up, which are more compact machines, the total number of courses are more around nine instead of the six for our rough-terrains. And very often the tests are held together with the simulators. We simulate problems and the trainee has to diagnose those problems and fix them.” In order to impart this training, Manitowoc’s JAFZA premises is equipped with several advanced simulators, he reveals. And the simulators, which replicate the cockpit and controls of the various crane models, are modular in nature where troubleshooting is concerned. At the sides of the simulators are spaces to attach electronic modules, each of which can simulate a different scenario to troubleshoot, providing the experience of a reallife job-site. Explaining further, Richaud adds: “So how we simulate various scenarios is by fixing a new module to the simulator. Or sometimes we might disconnect a sensor and then you will have an error message on the display and then you need to find out what sensor it corresponds to and find out what the problem could be. Our training is mainly about troubleshooting, though we also touch upon operating the crane. But our courses here are mainly designed for maintenance operations.” The trainees come mainly from the company’s dealers, though there are also Manitowoc staff from various parts of the region,” because we also need to develop our own competencies”, says Semple. “We also have some people from our large customers who own big fleets of our cranes, with their inhouse maintenance teams coming in to receive training. “For our dealers, part of the agreement when we assign a new dealership is that we have a programme of developing them. They need to have competent technicians that can handle all the maintenance aspects of our cranes and fix all issues. Without these courses they are unable to do so.

“Also, together with our dealers we chalk out a development plan for their technical people, which includes a certain amount of training and certification. The plan is discussed in detail and then they send their technicians in several waves and batches, because of course you don’t want to disrupt operations for your customers by having all your technicians away for training at once. “To be an elite Manitowoc dealer, which is the top tier of our dealerships, it is mandatory to have at least one Master Technician for every product line. The final Master certification is done by our factories; here we do all levels all the way up to and before the Masters. For the all-terrain cranes, the Masters certification is done by our factory in Germany, whereas for the rough-terrains it is done in our Cheery Grove, USA factory. Once a technician reaches the Masters level, this level has to be maintained every year, and for this they need to go to the respective factory annually to renew their certifications This is required because the technology is evolving so rapidly every year that if you don’t keep up with the changes you will be outdated very soon. Someone who has not been in a refresher training in the last few years or so can in no way fix one of our new cranes.” Richaud adds: “Also, there is a structure in place for picking up the required skills. After training is imparted to a technician or engineer here at our facilities, they need to practice those skills in order to be proficient in them and to acquire them properly. So, we recommend training for two or three modules per year for each technician. More than that does not really help, as the technician will not be able to pick up the knowledge imparted. “Our training centre here covers an

area of operations that includes all of the Middle East, not just the GCC countries, and extends into Egypt and Turkey. We also cover the former CIS countries from our Dubai office, as well as now India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. We also accommodate people from some other regions that don’t have this kind of facility. This makes our Dubai facility quite an advanced one for Manitowoc. It is a hub for training and a benchmark in the wider region for training.” While Manitowoc also has other global training centres - in Singapore, Germany and the US - the level and the courses are the same in each. Not

only is there uniformity in standards, but also if a technician covers a certain level at any of these centres, he can then go on to do the next level at any other centre, Semple explains. “There is world-wide coordination on the content of our training programmes and on the requirements to graduate levels. It’s not that we are all in little islands doing things our own way; there is complete standardisation of and uniformity in our training process globally. Our global brands are equally sought after in the Middle East. And with our training operations in Dubai, customers in the region are assured that their Manitowoc product, say a Grove mobile crane, is in the most capable hands in terms of maintenance and parts, keeping downtime to a minimum.

Aertssen was founded in the 1950s in a village near Antwerp, Belgium. The story starts when Marcel Aertssen was forced to sell his farm for the expansion of the Antwerp Port. With the money he receives, he bought his first excavator and opened ‘Earthworks Marcel Aertssen’. In the 1980s, Aertssen Transport and Aertssen Cranes were established by Marcel’s sons and the success of Aertssen continued. In 2005, in its first expansion outside Belgium, Aertssen chose Abu Dhabi to launch a new company: Earthmoving World Wide (EMW). Five years later, Aertssen Machinery Services (AMS) was established to represent Aertssen Cranes in the UAE. Today, eight years later, AMS has proven itself in the GCC to be a major heavy lift and crane rental provider and has established fruitful business relationships with many clients and engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contractors in the

construction, oil & gas and offshore sectors. With the building of a brand-new premises, over 30,000sqm in size in Abu Dhabi’s ICAD III industrial complex, AMS is now able to showcase the success it has gained over the recent past. Please describe Aertssen’s crane fleet in terms of numbers of cranes, types, capacities, etc. As a specialist global name in the heavy lift and crane rental services provider segment, and boasting an enviable track record of lifting operations, Aertssen has an extensive crane fleet that covers every requirement a customer may have with a broad range of cranes in various categories. Our fleet strength is especially strong when it comes to the mobile and crawler cranes, and we work with the world’s leading crane manufacturers to supply our fleet. In the mobile crane segment our rough terrain cranes (RTC) are from Tadano. We have Tadano RTCs from the 30t to 145t capacity classes. In fact, AMS is

09 Established in Belgium in the 1950s, Aertssen has a large and enviable fleet of some of the biggest and heaviest cranes both globally and in the GCC.

the only company in the region to have the Tadano 145T RT in its fleet. Meanwhile, our all-terrain cranes are no less advanced and efficient, coming as their do from another illustrious manufacturer - Liebherr Cranes. Coming to the crawler cranes, this is the category that forms the main focus of our company. From 40t to 280t in capacity, our models are from HSC Cranes, previously known as HitachiSumitomo Cranes – one of the most renowned brands in this category. As we go higher in capacity, we have Terex’s crawlers from 400-650t. Please describe your relationship with HSC cranes and with their authorized dealer, MECET, in the Middle East. We have a very good relationship with both HSC Cranes and with MECET. Just like Aertssen, MECET is also a Belgian family-owned business. Aertssen has been doing business for more than 40 years with MECET’s parent group, Luyckx, in Belgium. In the last 10 years this relationship has also expanded to the UAE. At Aertssen, we are pleased with the services of MECET and will continue this partnership. Please describe Aertssen’s operations in the region. How has your recent performance been in the Middle East market? We feel that AMS is most valuable in complex projects. Aertssen operates not only with rental agreements but also provides lifting solutions in lump sum packages. AMS has its own engineering team specialised for critical lifts, lifting plans, ground bearing studies, 3D drawings, etc. The engineers will attend site surveys along with the supervisors and coordinate with the operators to ensure smooth and safe operations. In terms of market performance, 2018 has been a quiet year in the UAE. The demand is low due a slower

market and the presence of many players. We are more optimistic for 2019, as we can see projects getting awarded and demand rising. Kuwait has been very busy thanks to the Al Zour oil refinery project that is coming up. Oman has been nice too, as we see demand rising again thanks to projects in Duqm. Have you spotted any trend in the regional crane market and crane rental sector in the last couple of years? The market has opened its doors for new players in the business. And this has happened at a time when overall the marker is slower with lower demand than there used to be. Consequently, it has made conditions tougher, as more cranes are now available in the region from more companies.

Please mention any recent deals and purchases that Aertssen has made to expand your crane fleet. Aertssen always uses cranes from the best brands in the world. As mentioned, brand-wise our fleet here consists mainly of Tadanao, Liebherr, Terex and HSC cranes. Last year was a busy one for us in terms of new crane acquisitions and fleet expansions, and saw Aertssen purchase more than 20 new cranes. Of these 80% were crawler cranes and 20% were mobile cranes.

“Our fleet strength is especially strong when it comes to the mobile and crawler cranes, and we work with the world’s leading crane manufacturers to supply our fleet” In the infrastructure and construction sectors we’re involved in projects such as the Abu Dhabi airport expansion, the new Muscat airport terminal in Oman, the Louvre Abu Dhabi and projects connected to Dubai’s Expo 2020. We’re also involved in the upcoming Barakah nuclear power plant project in the UAE.

How does Aertssen maintain and service its cranes and keep them in peak condition? Aertssen has a strong team of technicians working 24/7 to keep our fleet in the best possible condition. They are being coordinated by our senior mechanics from our European operations. Our cranes are always in excellent condition and

offer peak performance at all times. One important way through which we manage to offer a very high level of service and performance is by ensuring that we have a very young fleet. At Aertssen we do not keep our cranes for more than 10 years and 85% of our crane fleet is younger than five years of age. Finally, what sets Aertssen apart from the competition and how has the company built itself into a leader in the crane service provider segment in the region? Aertssen isn’t just a “rent-a-car – rent-a-crane” company. We provide full engineering studies, supervisors and riggers at any project. Our operations team will review the scope, method statements, risk assessments, etc. of the projects we’re involved in and co-ordinate with the customer. At Aertssen we make sure our clients are 100% satisfied by our services by providing engineering services, trained manpower and thought and knowledge on how to do a safe lift, apart from the best lifting equipment.

n separate studies conducted by E u ro p e a n specialists C o n s t r u c c i o n e s M e tá l i c a s COMANSA S.A. & Vandooran Tower Crane Consultants, an analysis was made of the various aspects of the two common types of tower cranes. Luffing jib tower cranes and level jib tower cranes are the two kinds of common models. Both models are widely used but they differ in their structure, operating principle and application field. The luffing jib tower crane is mainly used in large projects and industrial equipment installing fields where large lifting capacity, high perching accuracy and high safety are required for lifting large members and equipment components. A level jib tower crane is mainly used in the common civil building field where fast lifting, and non-precision perching and resting areas are required for lifting building materials. Both models have

13 Luffing-jib tower cranes, such as those made by Potain, have helped solve a lot of inner city construction problems when it comes to constricted sites.

“Among some of the key reasons for using luffing jib cranes is that especially over the last 15 years, they have helped to solve a lot of inner city construction problems when it comes to the fight for precious space in and around a construction site

advantages and disadvantages in different application fields, therefore we can plan a key role in determining which model should be selected. Luffing-jib cranes are especially demanded for tall buildings on congested sites. They have a very short counter-jib and a variable working radius, which permit high productivity in extremely narrow spaces. Among some of the key reasons for using luffing jib cranes is that especially over the last 15 years, they have helped to solve a lot of inner city construction problems when it comes to the fight for precious space in and around a construction site. The luffing crane has a special design and the jib has the capability of lifting while standing vertical in the air at a minimum of 5m radius from the mass section (Of course, this is used as an example, and depending on the type of crane, this could vary). It is the opposite to the flat top crane, which must be left parallel to the project and at a fixed radius of the jib already pre-determined. The luffing jib tower crane has solved many issues for projects where over-sailing rights are not possible or very difficult to achieve in cities around the world, like in the United Kingdom. These rights are not usually given when the loads being carried by the crane must be brought over the top of neighbouring buildings that are public, government or have a heavy population of the general public, such as public transport stations. The luffing crane allows the jib and the load to stay within the construction site boundaries at all times and ensure the safety of the general public. Advantages of using luffing jib tower cranes are: 1. Luffing cranes are usually the best solution when a number of cranes are working on the same construction site, to avoid any kind of crash with other cranes or the surrounding buildings. With their variable working radius, they don’t interfere in the working area of the other cranes on site and they can be parked with a very reduced radius. However, construction site managers should have prior experience in supervising several luffing cranes operating simultaneously.

14

TOWER cRanEs CR ANE REP ORT 2018

2. Luffing-jib cranes can improve material handling cycles on the job-site, using them like auxiliary cranes to the principal tower cranes, reducing the time needed for construction. 3. Usually, the luffer’s maximum load is bigger than other tower cranes. 4. In some areas, local laws make luffing-jib cranes necessary. For instance, London doesn’t allow any crane to fly over the surrounding spaces when they are working at a job-site, and luffing jib-cranes are in great demand because you can move the jib from the horizontal position up to the total vertical position. Drawbacks of using luffing jib cranes: There are some disadvantages of the luffing cranes when compared to other tower cranes. Although luffing cranes are major problem-solvers when it comes to working within major city centres or enclosed construction sites, they can greatly affect performance and economics of a construction site not hindered by tight jurisdictions. 1. Luffing cranes are generally more expensive than traditional tower cranes. The tower frames of a

luffing crane are stronger and the luffing mechanisms are much bigger than the hoist system of other tower cranes. Of course, higher technology is applied to move the jib and counterweights. 2. The cost of assembling and disassembling luffing-jib tower cranes is also much higher. 3. Luffing cranes are more receptive

In the GCC, crane selection depends on a project’s requirements. The popular high-rises in Dubai require high-capacity luffing-jib cranes.

to environmental changes such as the wind, and the jib of a ‘luffer’ acts as a wall in the wind. So, luffing-jib tower cranes have more restrictions. 4. Since luffing-jib tower cranes don’t have a trolley mechanism and the movement is done by the jib, they usually take longer than tower cranes to finish the job. The major impact luffing-jib tower cranes have on a construction site is the time that it takes for them to perform movements necessary to lift an object from point A to point B. The luffing crane must perform more movements mechanically in order to raise the object to the desired height and radius. A flat-top tower crane has a fixed jib set to a pre-determined radius. In order to perform a lift it needs to simply reel in the rope to lift the object to the desired height and move a trolley down a track in order to move the object to the desired radius. With a luffing crane there is no trolley moving quickly down a track. Instead, you must lift the entire jib using an ‘A’ frame positioned at the

15 rear of the crane top and move it up and down until you have reached your desired radius, while at the same time reeling in the ropes to gain the appropriate height for your load. It takes a lot more time to perform these tasks and it can be much more difficult, especially if the operator is working blind and is not able to see the load at the end of the ropes.

Luffing-jib tower cranes usually have higher load capacities than other tower cranes of similar specifications, but take a longer time to finish lifting jobs.

To summarise, the luffing-jib tower crane, like all other tower cranes, has its pros and cons, so when designing a job-site, it is a must to ensure that the right crane is selected for the job. In tight construction zones, such as inner cities, a luffing crane may be the best call. If a wrong choice is made, the result will be a lot of time

and money wasted on the project. In a market like the UAE, crane selection depends on the project’s requirements. For example, highrise towers, which are very popular here, require luffing cranes with a big capacity. Luffing cranes are special as they enable manoeuvring in tight spaces when surrounded by neighbouring buildings.

As the above comparison, luffing jib tower crane has great advantage over level jib tower crane in power station construction field, which has been confirmed by more than 100 power stations construction in china. Level jib tower crane is widely used in plant construction of power station as auxiliary tool while luffing jib tower crane definitely predominates in boiler lifting. It is not the only choice to use luffing jib tower crane for boiler lifting, which can be achieved by cooperation between large crawling crane, furnace handling crane and large level jib tower crane but also economic efficiency, safety and plane layout need to be carefully considered.

f you own or operate a fleet of cranes – or any other machinery - wherever you are in the world, you have the same abiding concern: how to increase productivity and decrease operating costs. A major component in both productivity and operating cost is the contact patch your crane or equipment has with the ground – the tyre. Use the right one and you enhance the crane’s performance while saving money on replacements. And Magna Tyres knows this. “Magna Tyres has several products for the crane segment that have achieved great popularity in the Middle East,” says Vijay Nambiar, the Dutch company’s GM for the Middle East, Africa and the Indian subcontinent. “For example, our MA03/MA03+ premium crane tyre, which has been received very well in the region’s crane market.” Magna’s MA03/MA03+ offer an optimal combination of tyre performance and purchase price, leading to a low cost-perhour figure and highly efficient operation, he explains. This proposition is widely recognised in the market with important GCC customers, such as Al Faris Equipment Rentals. “With many successful references worldwide, Magna Tyres has the experience

and knowledge to deliver the premium crane tyre solution requested by the leading crane rental companies,” Nambiar adds. That experience and knowledge has led to continued success and customer retention. For example, Magna Tyres signed an annual contract with Al Faris last year to supply tyres for all-terrain cranes in the Dubai-headquartered rental company’s

fleet. With 445/95R25 Magna MA03 mobile crane tyres fitted to Al Faris’ mobile crane fleet, the company was impressed enough with the tyres’ performance to renew the contract for another year. “As result of the successful cooperation in 2018, we renewed and expanded our annual supply contract with Al Faris until the end of 2019. Under the new agreement Magna Tyres will be Al Faris’ supplier for 445/95R25 Magna MA03 mobile crane tyres for the entire GCC region, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE,” Nambiar says. While success begets success, the foundation for it is excellence - an ongoing process at Magna Tyres, says Nambiar. This excellence has brought it success with other customers in the region, such as Abdullah H. Al Shuwayer Company, a pioneer in the construction contracting industry in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. This year Magna Tyres successfully delivered a high-volume order of 445/95R25 Magna MA03 mobile crane tyres for Al Shuwayer’s cranes. “The MA03 is designed for mobile cranes for highway and off-road applications. It is designed to last long, with a non-directional tread design that assures fuel efficiency, and excellent operating comfort.”

n a region that boasts some of the world’s biggest oil & gas refineries, petrochemical and port projects, as well as some of the tallest and biggest construction and infrastructure projects, there’s obviously no dearth of heavy lifting jobs. And while the region’s preference for mobile cranes is well known, the crawler crane’s strength and capacity makes it indispensable for the big lifting jobs – it’s the king of heavy lifts. Lattice boom crawler cranes are some of the largest pieces of construction equipment ever designed, with some of the thousand-ton-plus behemoths dwarfing even the largest mining excavators and ultra-large dumper trucks in size, stature and sheer presence. One of the global crane brands that is very popular in the region is Terex’s Demag. And within the Demag model range one crane that has been very well received of late in the Middle East lifting sector is the Demag CC 3800-1. The 650t capacity model, with a maximum load moment of 8,484 ton-metres and maximum tip height of 195m, is among the latest models from Terex Cranes, owner of the Demag brand. Damien Bizjak, associate marketing manager, Global Marketing, at Terex Cranes, says: “The Demag CC 3800-1 has been our most successful crane in the Middle East recently. Its faster rig-up times, higher capacity and ease of operation created a new segment requirement for this crane. All the major crane rental companies went for this crane, and they have appreciated the speed at which it can be mobilised and rigged up. Its high lift capacity, various boom combinations and versatility have also contributed to its popularity.” Elaborating on Terex’s business in the GCC, he adds: “There has been a constant demand for crawler

cranes in this region on an upsurge of requirement in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Bahrain. New refinery and major infrastructure projects in Kuwait, the nuclear power plant in the UAE and petrochemical projects in Oman have all pushed up demand, as has the construction of stadiums in Qatar. “Our range for Demag crawler cranes goes from 400t with the CC 2400-1 to 3200t with the CC 8800-1 TWIN. In our range, the models from 400-650t capacity have found major use in the maintenance of petrochemical plants and infrastructure projects. The bigger ones, meanwhile, are being used for the construction of these projects along with oil rigs, power and nuclear facilities. Overall, the demand is highest for the 400t, 600t, 650t and 1600t Demag crawlers. The CC 2800-1 and CC 8800-1 used to be our flagship models; however, the CC 3800 -1 has become very popular of late and earned praise from all our customers for being the perfect fit in jobs with high lifting requirement and space constraints.” Demag is of course a legendary name in the crane business, with a long history of excellence. This is due to its dedication to both quality and the customer, says Bizjak. “We listen to our customers and work very closely with them. We understand their needs and strive to provide solutions that cater to their specific requirements in our crane products and services. And then we help them to improve their uptime through professional after-sales support and training. In the Middle East, this positive and proactive attitude of the Terex and Demag brands has enabled us to form strong tie-ups with all crane service providers. We work in close coordination with them to provide the right return on investment and the solutions that cater to their needs. This is what makes Demag so popular. “International lifting service majors such as Mammoet, Sarens and Aertssen have also included the model in their Middle East fleets. Most of these companies have placed repeat business as well, which confirms the model’s success. Among the biggest names to have ordered the crane from the Middle East are Al Jabar, ILC, Al Areedh and Al Faris, to name a few.” In fact, Al Faris, the leading UAE-based regional crane and lifting services provider has recently expanded its crawler crane fleet with the inclusion of a Demag CC 3800-1. The company, however, is more readily associated with the Liebherr brand, which forms most of its fleet. Al Faris counts Liebherr’s giant crawler, the LR 11000 as its flagship. “Liebherr is a leader in crane manufacturing, introducing the latest technologies, easier mobilisation and demobilisation systems, as well as simpler operating and functionality options. Liebherr has set new standards in crawler crane development over the last few years in terms of technical innovations and user-friendly designs,” says Kieve Pinto, managing director of Al Faris.

“In this region, we are an entrenched player in the crawler cranes segment. Our sales are well spread out throughout the GCC. Our bestseller in the region…remains the SCX2800, a 280t model”

The Liebherr LR 11000 covers a wide range of uses with its many boom versions, including the PowerBoom parallel boom system. The LR 11000 has been designed for use in constricted areas, like the oil & gas and petrochemical industries. Its design also ensures low transportation costs. Describing the model’s advanced features, Liebherr says in its official literature: “Its large number of boom versions and high lifting capacity means that the LR 11000 covers a wide range of applications. The standard components, comprising the S main boom and W luffing jib, enable the crane to use various boom options, including a strong PowerBoom system with a heavy luffing jib. Only the P adapter is required as a supplement for this purpose. Main S boom operation is possible with a 1,000t head or a 650t head.” The advancements of the LR11000 have already enabled it to have its moments with Al Faris, as Pinto describes: “We recently carried out structural lifting works using the Liebherr LR 11000 in Dubai for the iconic Mohammed Bin Rashed

Library located near the Dubai Creek in Jaddaf. The challenging project was made easier by the crane’s power, versatility and ease of use.” Another popular name in the Middle East crawler crane market is HSC Cranes. With lattice boom crawler models in various capacities in its range, and with a reputation for Japanese quality, the manufacturer

has always been among the most noted in its sector both worldwide and in the region. Speaking with CMME, Wim Aernouts, director, Middle East Crane Equipment Trading (MECET), HSC’s regional dealer, says that with a new launch in early 2018 and demand steady, the company has continued its performance this year after a

25 successful 2017. Late in the first quarter this year, due to a corporate restructuring between owners Sumitomo Heavy Industries Construction Crane (SHI) and Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM), the manufacturer rebranded the products as HSC Cranes. No longer is the branding on the cranes Hitachi-Sumitomo, which is now replaced by the name HSC. Everything else, however, remains the same as before, Piet Van Bakergem, GM, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East (HMEC), says. To emphasise the point, there is also a new slogan: “Same crane. New name.” The HSC line-up starts from the 50t SCX550E crawler and goes all the way up to the 6000SLX in the 500t class. Its latest launch early this year is an 80t lattice boom crawler that expands its SCX E-series. The model – the SCX800E – has a maximum lift capacity of 80t at a 3.2m radius, sports a maximum main boom length of 54.5m and is powered by a 140kW engine. Such machines are leading the charge for the brand in the Middle East, Aernouts says. Among the important customers who have gone in for HSC equipment is Aertssen, which counts projects such as the Dubai Metro’s underconstruction 2020 line among its major engagements. “In this region, we are an entrenched player in the crawler cranes segment. Our sales are well spread out throughout the GCC. Some of our crane customers are in the Duqm port project in Oman and its associated infrastructure works. Another customer transferred his entire fleet from Qatar to Kuwait this year and is in talks with us for more units, which will be based in Kuwait’s Ruwais area. We have also done brisk business with our smaller crawler cranes for foundation jobs. The 55t SCX550 and the 70t SCX700E are two such models which have found

Our best-seller in the region, however, remains the SCX2800, a 280t model with deliveries this year to the Johnson Group.” Another Japanese brand with a strong presence in the regional crawler crane sector is Kobelco. Especially popular in foundation jobs, the brand sees the biggest demand for its 100t and below models, says Kentaro Nezaki, Kobelco’s director and GM of crane business. Among the important projects where Kobelco cranes are working in the region is the site of one of the largest public libraries in the region, near the Festival City mall in Dubai, he reveals. “Our position is progressively getting better in the region. The UAE and Kuwait are our leading markets in the GCC, with almost 85% of the demand for our products being for the 100t and below models in the UAE. However, our 250t model is also very popular and we are seeing requirements and enquiries pick up for our new 300t CKS3000 model,” says Nezaki. Civil works and construction are the leading sectors that Kobelco supplies cranes to, he adds. “With the oil price picking up, we expect to see demand pick up too for largersized models in plant construction and maintenance. At Kobelco, we specialise in lattice boom crawler cranes and we are prepared with a model range from 55t to 550t.” To improve reliability and ease of service, Kobelco follows its own philosophy of simplicity, Nezaki adds. “We try to design cranes that are strong but also simple. We also try to minimise the use of electronics. This adds up to cranes that are robust and have minimum downtime. Also, we are very confident about our support. Not only are our dealers well trained, but we also have a team of three expert service engineers stationed in Dubai who are always available to attend to any customer needs throughout the region.”

high on Safety French crane saFety systems expert amcs technologies discusses how its latest product – the dcs 61-s – helps avoid collision between liFting equipment

a

voiding collisions between cranes and other objects is a vital part of any job-site, especially on multi-crane sites. By ensuring the supply of materials, tower cranes play a crucial role in the construction process. Any problems can generate accidents, delays and financial loss. AMCS’s latest anti-collision and zoning product - the DCS 61-S (Driving Control System-Safety) – meets the European standard EN 17076 and is expected early next year. Visitors to the Big 5 Heavy in Dubai this month, however, can take a sneak peek at the system, which will be presented at the show by A and Z technologies, the exclusive dealer of AMCS technologies in the Middle East. The new DCS 61-S system has enhanced capacity to guarantee job-site safety with tower cranes by using “the redundancy of information”, according to AMCS.

The company says it is in the process of being PLd (Performance Level) certified in accordance with the European standard EN 13849-1, and SIL-2 (Safety Integrity Level) certified in accordance with the standard EN 61508 by an accredited third-party organisation (INERIS), in order to guarantee a serious quality approach. AMCS says the three essential features of the DCS 61-S system are: Zoning function: This feature is to avoid overflying a forbidden area by continuously controlling the working limits of the tower crane. Three-dimensional prohibited zones can be quickly defined directly on the screen, by associating geometric shapes with the areas concerned. Anti-collision function: This system applies adjustable safety coverage to all machine sections in order to manage, in real time and in 3D, the “interferences” between each element of the cranes, as well as the

speed of movement. The system will allow intervention on the controlled mechanisms to ensure complete immobilisation of the cranes at a pre-set distance from the obstacle. Data logger:This feature constantly collects and saves events related to the management of the “prohibited zones” and “interferences” functions in order to view them directly on screen and/or download them on a USB key. “Thousands of AMCS anti-collision systems are installed worldwide today, including in the GCC region at key sites such as Dubai Creek Harbour and Meydan One Mall in Dubai, the Abu Dhabi Airport and the Muscat Airport in Oman, amongst many others. Visitors to the A and Z technologies and AMCS technologies stand at the Big 5 Heavy will have the opportunity to exchange views with our expert team of anti-collision and zoning experts and discover the last product, the DCS 61-S,” says a spokesperson of the French multinational company.
