Bright Start

Sub EDITOR AELRED DOYLE

We’ve been hearing for a while now that the Middle East’s construction equipment market has gone off the boil, that sales are not what they used to be, that many market players are feeling the pinch – and that this shroud of negativity is not about to lift soon. But as CMME has always contended, things are not as dire as they look to be. And now we have proof – the powered access sector. Last year was a good one for the makers of the boom lifts, the articulated lifts and scissors. The powered access sector saw great uptake in the Middle East market, with some of the big OEMs concluding and delivering large orders to the rental heavyweights in the region as well as game-changing infrastructure projects in the wider Middle East. So, whether it is a Haulotte army working on the new Istanbul airport project or Genie delivering a few hundred units to Access Hire, Johnson Arabia and other rental outfits, the signs are clear and visible that the mobile elevating work platforms are getting a move on in the Middle East At CMME, we believe this is happening due to a perfect collusion of several factors. With the deadline approaching for must-deliver infrastructure projects in several places in the region, the need for access equipment has now become a pressing one. Take the case of the Dubai Metro’s upcoming 2020 line, where boom lifts and scissors are doing the final fitting work at a frenetic pace. Of course, this rise in need for MEWPs has been helped along by the official policy of doing away with scaffoldings wherever and as much as possible. Safety standards have improved and compliance is now stricter, which has necessitated the move to specialised equipment. Another reason for the buoyancy in the access sector is the renewed importance of rental companies. While this may be hiding an underlying symptom of reluctance for outright ownership among end-users due

SALES ExECuTIvE

to risk-aversion, it does mean that this risk averse mentality is leading to demand from the specialist fleet owners. And since an end-user owner will typically only buy a few machines while rental operators will buy in bulk, we see a preponderance of large orders going to the rental biggies. The last reason we can think of is the most obvious one and one that may not provide any indication about the overall health of the equipment market. This reason is maintenance and facilities management. No matter whether new structures are put up or not, what has already been built needs to be maintained – and this is where access equipment is almost an imperative. So, whether it is public utilities or entertainment enterprises such as amusement parks and resorts, work-at-height solutions are essential. This also means that manufacturers have to bring in suitable models for specific applications, such as emission-free electric machines for indoor use, long reach ones for oil & gas and FM sectors or tracked models for rough terrain. And all this has to be backed up with the right after-sales service and training. In this issue, Genie, Haulotte, Snorkel and Sinoboom share their experiences with us. All have either seen a good year in 2018 or are bullish about the future, mainly both. Looks like the year has started well! Here’s wishing all our readers success and prosperity in 2019. Happy New Year!

New Cat app delivers kit data to mobile devices

Caterpillar has launched the equipment industry’s first mobile app designed to allow customers who spend their time in a truck, at the job site and on-thego to take advantage of equipment telematics data. The new Cat App delivers simplified, streamlined data directly to mobile devices, helping customers monitor machine location and health, react faster to fault codes and

Fred Rio, director of digital and technology for Caterpillar Construction Industries, explained: “App development included 150 customers and dealers from around the world to

learn what they considered most important from their telematics data. The vast majority of the feedback, regardless of brand, fell into three customer challenges: tracking machine hours and location, receiving equipment fault codes, and managing maintenance without being tied to the computer back at the office.” This new mobile equipment management tool provides an easy way to monitor entire fleets, request parts and service, and connect with Cat dealers from the job-site. The exact location of all equipment tracked by the app is displayed on the device, along with the machine’s operating hours, health and utilisation data. It enables the best use of equipment by moving under-utilised assets to where it is needed most.

Thyssenkrupp backs ‘skybridge’ study

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH)is being funded by Thyssenkrupp to undertake an 18-month research project titled ‘Skybridges: Bringing the Horizontal into the Vertical Realm’. The purpose of this project is to capture the development history of

the ‘skybridge’ concept, a primarily-enclosed space linking two or more buildings at height. This information will be disseminated in the form of a CTBUH Technical Guide, said Thyssenkrupp. According to the company: “As many architects and visionaries have shown over

a period spanning more than a century, the re-creation of the urban realm in the sky through connections between buildings at height has a vast potential for the enrichment of our cities. To many, it seems nonsensical that, although the 20th, and now the 21st century, have clearly seen a

push towards greater height and urban density in our major urban centres, the groundpavement level remains almost exclusively the sole physical plane of connection. As the world rapidly urbanises, greater thought needs to be expended on how horizontal space can be developed at height.” Thyssenkrupp says that new transportation technology, like its MULTI, now put horizontal habitats in the sky within reach but cultural, organisational, and jurisdictional obstacles remain. The purpose of the research project is to overcome these by building a solid case for the extensive benefits of skybridges. The research will evaluate the main challenges and barriers to the incorporation of skybridges in tall buildings, and how these can be overcome.

Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer) has announced that its Gulf Rubber Factory recycled 6,954.33t of used tyres in the first eight months of 2018, averaging 28t per day. Set up in 2011 as a publicprivate joint venture, the facility utilises cutting-edge tyre recycling technologies from leading European companies to produce different sizes of rubber granules from recycled tyres in an sustainable process called crumbing. Used tyres undergo mechanical shredding through multiple cutting and purification

rounds to remove any traces of steel or fibre. The recycled granules are converted into a high-quality rubber for use as an alternative to natural rubber as well as in moulding and manufacturing valueadded rubber products, such as rubber flooring for sports grounds and children’s playgrounds. The granules are non-toxic, weather-proof and impact-resistant,. Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Tadweer’s acting GM, said: “The facility (eliminates) the need for methods such as burning or landfilling that have severe (adverse) impacts.”

Liebherr launches mining excavators

Liebherr Mining Equipment Colmar SAS launched its B-versions of the R 9100 and R 9150 excavators on the first day of the year. Both machines have proven to be reliable and productive partners in the mining industry over the years, said Liebherr, and with the newest upgrades,

these hydraulic excavators “take a step forward to exceed the performance and reliability compared to other players in this class while lowering the cost per ton”. The Liebherr R 9100 (first launched in 2010) and R 9150 (first launched in 2012) are based on 60 years of

Liebherr experience in the development and construction of hydraulic excavators, said the company, adding that innovative technologies from the manufacturer’s large hydraulic excavator programme, together with wellproven Liebherr components, make these updated models

ideal for the mining and construction industry’s needs. The R 9100 B and R 9150 B are equipped with Liebherr’s V12 diesel engine specifically designed to withstand extreme outside temperatures and high altitudes with low atmospheric pressure. Integrating the latest engine management system, these machines are built for extreme conditions, said Liebherr. Furthermore, the new B-versions come with the exclusive EVO Bucket Solution with patented Liebherr design to maximise loading capacity and ensure optimal penetration efficiency. Thanks to the contoured sidewalls and the augmented depth, the EVO Bucket backhoe bucket has now a capacity of 7.5m³ for the R 9100 B and 8.8m³ - 9.6m³ for the R 9150 B. The new buckets also make both excavators good shovel matches for several Liebherr’s dump trucks.

BUILT-IN

Navigating narrow paths and doorways can present a challenge on the jobsite. Thanks to its compact design, the Snorkel S3215E fits small spaces to get the job done right. The nimble electric slab scissor lift moves easily from outdoor to indoor on non-marking tires. Now that’s agility. Add to that a generous platform capacity of 600 lbs. (272kg) up to a working height of 21 ft. (6.5m), and you’ve got an all-star performer. Sometimes it’s the size that matters.

Wirtgen pAvers on Autopilot in KentucKy

A

concrete slipforming contractor in Kentucky has moved in a big way into curb, gutter and parapet construction by using the advanced technology available from Wirtgen pavers. Fox Enterprises now constructs offset curb, gutter and parking lot ‘island’ placements using an on-site guidance system. The system permits automated placement of those items, including tight radii. Its fleet recently expanded to include a larger slipform paver that can do both offset curband-gutter paving and inset pavement slab paving. Ed Chenault, president, Fox Enterprises, says: “We want to be the

best there is, and for that we need to buy the best technology available. Automated control of the paver is the future. My daughter someday will take over the reins of the company, and I want to have the next generation of paving technology available to the next generation of management. I didn’t buy the new slipform pavers for a fiveyear plan, I bought them for the long haul, the future of the company.” To this end Fox bought two Wirtgen SP 15i slipform pavers with exclusive AutoPilot control technology in 2012 and 2014, and followed up with the next-sized model, the SP 25i. “The bottom line is that with this technology, on many projects we can install curb at a lower cost than before,”

Chenault says. “We’ve overcome the challenges of a new kind of technology. Now that we know the machines’ capabilities, we are getting more efficient in their use. We’re developing more and more opportunities to put them to work and are pursuing other contractors that are using similar technologies, because they understand the advantage of competitive pricing with higher technology.” Samantha Chenault, vice president, Fox Enterprises, adds: “The Wirtgen AutoPilot technology is really cool, and I use GPS daily. If we can advance the technology with the kind of work that we are doing and keep up with the times, this is the best way to do it.” Quite often Fox serves as a

subcontractor, which was the case when it was placing curbs, gutters and islands in a reconstructed parking lot for a major manufacturer outside Lexington, Kentucky. Ed Chenault worked on a stormwater improvement and parking lot expansion there. “Using AutoPilot, we installed a large number of trench drains, and were placing curb and gutter to tie into the trench drains,. We have more success with the tight radius for curbs using AutoPilot than we do with string-line.” The Wirtgen AutoPilot is a pioneering 3D control system for the Wirtgen SP 15i and SP 25i slipform pavers. The GPS-based system ensures precision and efficiency, regardless of the shape of profilest to be paved.

T

here are around three months left to go now before the opening on April 8 of what promises to again be the world’s biggest trade show - Bauma. While every edition of the triennial showcase of the construction equipment industry is usually an improvement on the last one – and so by default the biggest trade fair in the world – this year the organisers Messe München have pulled out all the stops to make it an even bigger event. Speaking exclusively to CMME at The Big 5 in Dubai last year, where she had come to promote Bauma, Marielle Kastner, project manager at Messe Munchen, says: “Running from April8-14, Bauma 2019 is much bigger than past editions of the event in terms of floor space. We have a new layout with new floor plans; there are two new halls this time, which have been integrated into the event for Bauma 2019. This has led to a positive change in the allocation of companies, making it a wider offering. “We have two new halls this time, as well as more manufacturers than last time. The site will be expanded to 614,000 square metres and the number of halls will be increased to 18. We had to take a decision as to how we allocate the additional hall space. We decided to allocate one hall to the components area.” Expanded to 18 halls, the exhibition will feature an indoor space of 200,000 square metres, with which the total Bauma area will now span more than 614,000 square metres. The last edition in 2016 was on 605,000 square metres of space, which makes the already largest trade fair in the world even larger with the addition of 9,000 square metres. Explaining space allocation, Kastner says: “So in one of our halls, for example, we will now have all the digital solutions together. And then we have another hall for powertrains and also for fluid technologies. We’ve divided some halls into two sections to incorporate separate themes, so that we are able to group exhibitors

15 Bauma 2019 will have more hall space as well as an emphasis on virtual and augmented reality to enhance visitor experience, says Marielle Kastner from Messe Munchen.

into their own niches and make it easier for visitors to find them in one place. This will enable greater visibility for our exhibitors.” Thanks to the clear division into the individual exhibition sectors, as well as a new map of the fairground, visitors can be managed in a more targeted way. With the two new halls together covering 20,000 square metres, Bauma will provide space for more exhibitors than in 2016, when 3,425 exhibitors took part. “We are expecting around 3,500 exhibitors at this edition. We are still receiving applications from prospective exhibitors, but already, the number of confirmations is an improvement over the last edition. In terms of visitors, we are expecting around 600,000. Last time we recorded around 580,000, so we are also going to see an increase in the number of visitors.” Among the highlights of the space allocation is that the largest sector - construction machines and attachments – has been expanded from four to five halls, apart from an additional area outdoors, directly adjacent to the hall complex. Furthermore, the components sector now also has five instead of four halls; formworks and scaffolds moves to Hall B3; and lifting appliances are bundled in Hall C4. New in Hall C6 is the Conference Centre North that houses additional conference rooms. Previously located in Hall B0, which will be used as additional exhibition space during bauma 2019, the special “THINK BIG!” exhibit that shows students career opportunities in the construction and building material machine industries moves to the ICM – International Congress Centre Munich. And there is another change envisaged. Kastner adds that while the event is on, the traffic-calmed part of Paul-HenriSpaak-Strasse will be turned into the pedestrian zone “Bauma Boulevard”, along which visitors and exhibitors can enjoy an international culinary offering. A new hall and fairgrounds map available on the official Bauma website provides a good overview, she added, while the Bauma film illustrates the clear division of the exhibition sectors. “Construction is increasingly moving to more digitalised solutions, and this is something that we want Bauma to reflect. Digitalisation is a big issue now in the construction industry and we would like to address it also and put greater focus on it,” Kastner adds. For the first time, visitors to Hall B0 will be able to experience the industry virtually – thanks to virtual and augmented reality, made possible through a combination of images, sound, or sensor feedback, such as wind. “The booths have size limits; the digital areas are limitless. With new virtual offerings, we’re bringing the construction site into the trade fair and expanding our digital portfolio,” says Kastner. As for the reason for her to be in Dubai to promote the event, she adds: “The Middle East is an important region for us at Bauma, and that’s why we are here to present Bauma in this region and to encourage visitors from this area, because Bauma is the place to be for the latest news and information about the industry. We expect a sizeable number of visitors to come to the event from the Middle East.” Bauma 2019

aiming bigger • Total exhibition space expanded by 9,000 square metres • More than 3,500 exhibitors from 55 countries – a new record • Number of halls increased from 16 to 18 • Virtual reality and Bauma PLUS initiatives • Easier orientation thanks to new hall layout • Projection of more than 600,000 visitors

EVENT REPORT JANUARY 2019

Topcon’s Top Tech

Japanese heavyweight Komatsu and its technology partner topcon got together to present the latest in new technologies and future construction Jobsites at technology day last month

A

perennial problem for contractors, fleet owners and indeed anyone who wants to build something is not about obtaining the right machines and tools for the job but getting hold of the right people who know how to use those tools and machines correctly and efficiently. In other words, you can buy all the latest machines and equipment on the market if you have the adequate purse size, but expert operators sometimes expert operators cannot be found for love or money. The simple reason for this is that they are just not there. It takes years of experience to become skilled at operating an excavator, wheel loader or bulldozer, and even more perhaps for equipment requiring greater precision, such as a grader. Only those operators who have spent decades behind the controls at challenging job-sites acquire and develop the skills necessary to complete jobs in fewer passes of the blade or bucket – and not all who spend the time manage it either. For the contractor, though, fewer passes is the name of the game. It is what he is looking for to save fuel, machine wear, time and ultimately money – for time is money. And this is what makes the demand for skilled and experienced operators sky-high. But what does the paucity of skilled machine operators have to do with Topcon and Komatsu? The answer is that the two companies understand this problem very well and have put their heads together to come up with a solution. Topcon, which is at the vanguard of Japanese high technology, saw the problem differently: what if modern tech tools are adapted to make machines capable enough

to make the need for the rare highly-skilled operators redundant? Using Komatsu machines fitted with Topcon systems, the two companies demonstrated this concept to its Middle East audience last month at the Topcon-Komatsu Technology Days in Dubai. Jointly organised by Komatsu Middle East FZE and Topcon Positioning Group the “2018 Technology Day” showcased their latest technologies for construction site management. The event, which took place near the Jebel Ali Shooting Club in Dubai, demonstrated and simulated earthmoving processes on a realistic construction site, showing how state-of-the-art technology can optimise machine productivity and workflow while reducing operating cost. Over 180 visitors from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, Pakistan and Turkey attended a full day of informative lectures, watched live demonstrations and had face-to-face discussions with industry experts from both Komatsu and Topcon. Live demonstrations included Komatsu’s D155A-6R bulldozer, GD755-5R motor grader and PC220-8M0 hydraulic excavator. All equipped with Topcon’s latest machine control systems. Speaking at the event, Ashraf Hashish, senior general manager, marketing, Komatsu Middle East FZE, said he expects the growth trend to continue in the UAE for the next three years, especially with the $13.6bn stimulus package announced by the Abu Dhabi government last year. “Komatsu and Topcon partnered in order to introduce machine control solutions which will enable our customers to increase their productivity and decrease their operating costs even with new or low-skilled operators,” Hashish added. The infrastructure needs in the GCC are increasing every

year, and John Fahy, construction regional sales manager in Topcon Positioning Group, said: “Today, conventional construction methods are time and material-consuming and can have a negative impact on the project cost. Contractors will have to turn to technology like Topcon in order to get the jobs done quicker and with less cost.” Fahy introduced Topcon to the audience followed by presentations on the new assistive technologies and their advantages before the demo show. Customers could see all the machines in action, including Komatsu’s excavators, bulldozers and graders, push, dig and grade with pin-point precision to pre-set levels. During the demonstrations, a Komatsu bulldozer with the Topcon electronic wizardry installed showed how effective the technology could be. Describing the machine, Motoyasu Kakita, manager, product marketing, Komatsu Middle East FZE, said: “The Komatsu D155A-6 dozer is a 41.75t, 354hp machine with a 9.4 cubic metre blade capacity. It also comes with Komatsu’s sandy area arrangement and hot area arrangement as standard, and has an E mode and P mode, the former providing higher savings but lower productivity than the latter. “Komatsu now offers the machine with an easy way to install the Topcon system. It’s what we call our own ‘plug and play’ version. The machine will arrive from the factory ready for the Topcon system as standard in the Middle East, which is a first for the region.” Explaining the principle behind the Topcon

system Fahy said: “The biggest problem facing construction at the moment - and it’s everywhere in the world - is operators. The quality of the operators is going down while the level of skill demanded to do the work is going up. “All the best operators we see are now getting older and older and retiring, so we are left with fewer expert operators as fewer and fewer young people enter the trade. “The other issue we have now is time. Projects now are under even greater time pressure. And the third issue is cost. Material is getting more expensive and fuel is not far behind. So, we need to look at ways to save

Hitting the grade consistantly and accurately is made easier with Topcon’s GPSenabled systems, which effectively solve the problem of paucity of expert machine operators.

on all these. Most contracts now are being tendered and the tender margins are getting smaller and smaller. We need to figure out how to save money and make a profit. “The solution that Topcon offers with machine control is part of this saving process. The offering is higher accuracy and higher speed compared to our competitors. With the Komatsu dozer and this technology, we have some much faster and better cycle times.” Explaining the technical principles behind the systems he added: “A normal dozer wold have a GPS system on it, which is quite good, but we add a sensor. The GPS gives us our position and shows us where the blade is, so we know where the blade is. “In the centre of the blade we have a GPS pole to pinpoint its position. But with our system there is also a sensor on the blade, which gives us the slope of the blade. This sensor is actually an electronic gyroscope.” It is this gyroscope that does an important function, keeping the blade level and steady at all times, no matter what the terrain condition, Fahy explains. This allow the dozer or grader to go faster and the work happens quicker, enabling the contractor and project owner to make savings over traditionally run machines. Following the field demonstrations, a full line walk-around took place where Topcon specialists talked about all components and aspects of the assist system’s innovative technology that is setting a very high standard for equipment use. The day ended with a relaxed feel, with a gala dinner under the palm trees of the adjacent Jebel Ali Resort.

One of the biggest manfacturers of powered access products in the world, Haulotte is has a sizeable presence in many work areas, such as oil & gas and ship-building.

“It’s been over 10 years for me now in the region and the best-selling product is still the big boom, and among our success stories is our 41m boom.”

ith its machines working in several high-profile projects in the Middle East, powered access major Haulotte has seen a measure of success in the region over the past couple of years, despite the constraints of the market. Arthur Danelian, managing director of Haulotte Middle East, says: “Our position is not bad, despite the difficulties. There is a lack of liquidity in the market. It was a very good year for us at least until the end of August, because we have a very big market share in Turkey, especially with the new airport. So, if you ask me on a scale of 0-10, then 2018 was an eight for us.” Having a customer financing department in-house is of great benefit Danelian adds. “We have loyal customers who we help though our Haulotte internal financing arm. We offer terms such as five-year payment periods with a gap of a year. Customers can use the machines for a year and then start paying us the instalments. In the European markets we also have external financing partners helping our

customers in their purchases.” When it comes to what those customers are buying, Danelian says there is no replacing the big booms. “Honestly, it’s been over 10 years for me now in the region and the best-selling product is still the big boom and among our success stories is our 41m boom. Even in Turkey, for two years now the market has started to take the big booms because of the new airport. So our bestselling product in the Middle East is booms, especially the big booms with high reach.” Speaking about the Istanbul airport project brings us to what is perhaps Haulotte’s biggest success story at the moment - one of the biggest infrastructure and transport projects, not only in Turkey but globally. “Haulotte is adding another layer of success in the world’s biggest airport project in Istanbul by deploying a large number of our innovative products on the entire construction site,” says Danelian. “The Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) is the biggest and the most strategic project in the history of Turkey and it is more than 80% completed. Our Turkish dealer AcarlarMakinehas supported the mega project by supplying more than 300 units of the full range of Haulotte aerial work platforms.” The airport, which is located far from the city centre, will be connected by high-speed railway late this year. This is especially an area of the project where various Haulotte scissor lifts and diesel

articulated booms have been deployed since the work began, Danelian says. “The full range of Haulotte products are playing a role in the mega project, starting from Haulotte electric scissor lifts with 8m working heights to the biggest diesel boom lift in our range with working heights of 43m, proving the necessity of the AWPs in such projects. The need for the Haulotte working platforms is increasing day by day paralleled with the increasing awareness of the risks of working at height, the complexity of the

structural designs of the airport and the adoption of time saving solutions through safe equipment,” he explains. Still on the big booms, Haulotte models are working with many oil & gas companies, where there is a marked demand for the telescopic models like the 43m, Danelian elaborates.. “Apart from this we have firm and very fruitful relationships with several large rental companies in the Middle East. For example, we have a very big rental partner in

United Gulf Equipment Rental (UGER) - local company and perhaps our largest partner in the GCC. It’s a home-grown GCC company and it’s 100% Haulotte. They have about 600 of our units in their fleet. “Then of course we have Rapid Access which is Loxam today, it’s our biggest customers in France and has been working with us for over 30 years – one of our oldest customers. Just over a year ago we sold 200 units to Rapid Access. We followed the sale up with our customary excellent

a Finger on the sector’s pulseo According to Haulotte, its PULSEO series of machines is all about lower energy costs and less air and noise pollution, while still providing optimal performance. The HA20 LE and HA20 LE PRO are the first models in the PULSEO product line and are designed for indoor and outdoor applications, rough-terrain capabilities, operations suited to low-emission and low-noise zones. Thanks to their high-quality materials and components, ideal protection for electric and hydraulic parts and extensive endurance testing, PULSEO models come with a five-year warranty, says the manufacturer Designed to operate in silence, the PULSEO generation cares for both the environment and people nearby. Its all-electric architecture makes it suitable for work in downtown areas and low-emission zones, as well as on green construction sites. It keeps a low acoustic profile in any situation, offering new opportunities for use.

As such it is suitable for lownoise areas like hospitals, schools, bookstores, etc., and also for public spaces such as shopping centres, airports, concert halls and pedestrian streets, among other areas. The quiets operation of the electric machines also gives customers flexible working hours. Night time or early morning work is no longer inconvenience for local residents. Equipped with non-marking tyres, the PULSEO range of electric mobile elevating platform is also suited to outdoor applications. Its oscillating axle and four-wheel drive ensure optimal adherence and stability for outdoor work. Thanks to their silent electric operation, PULSEO models can be used at any time with no inconvenience for people around the job-site. The machine’s low tail swing and easy handling also allow for operation in confined spaces. Independent four-wheel drive, with each wheel producing powerful

torque, ensures excellent traction distribution. An oscillating axle keeps the wheels in contact with the ground for optimal adherence, while solid cured-on tires provide the wheels with the flexibility needed to properly hold the ground, even on rough terrain. Ultra-fast elevation speeds, 360-degree continuous turret rotation and simultaneous movements work together to enhance productivity. Safety is handled by the Haulotte Activ’Shield Bar 2.0. Faced with a risk of entrapment, the operator is propelled against the bar. The machine automatically stops. Protected by the Safety Gap, the operator maintains easy access to controls and unobstructed visibility. Moreover, the Haulotte Activ’Lighting System ensures safe performance of the delicate procedures to load and unload the equipment. Comprising 11 LED spotlights, it provides ideal illumination of the basket, controls and the manoeuvring

area around the machine. High-capacity batteries and the ability to lower the basket by force of gravity with no power consumption maximise battery performance for a full day’s work. If extended battery power is required, the on-board range extender engine can rapidly recharge the batteries, while the machine retains its full operating capacity during the charge cycle. At the end of a shift, the builtin charger and its smart power management module optimise both the charge and life span of the batteries. Maintenance-free electric motors, extended maintenance intervals, easy access to components and simple battery maintenance are some other features. The Haulotte Activ’Energy Management system, developed in partnership with European research institute LITEN, extends battery lifespan. Haulotte Activ’Screen provides users with information to help them identify alarms.

23

standard of service and they are really satisfied. They have started using more Haulotte machines and now we hope for further sales going forward.” It’s no surprise that Danelian is hopeful. After all, Haulotte’s reputation in the Middle East has been built on several large and prestigious projects where it’s machines have been supplied. Listing some of the most recent ones, he says: “Haulotte machines are working at the Warner Bros - Abu Dhabi project. The innovative technology of Haulotte telescopic booms were the best solution for this project where they are used for building and finishing the modern high-tech elevations. “Another ongoing project us the Art Center – Airolink, where Haulotte articulated booms are the ideal choice to reach the difficult working areas on top of the elevations and to build the complex design of the structure. The Dubai Metro expansion is yet another ongoing project where several units of Haulotte big booms are playing big role in the maintenance finishing works of the upcoming 2020 line. It’s a similar case with the Riyadh Metro project. One of the key aspects of safety is to have optimally working machines and competent operators. Conscious of this fact, Haulotte devotes considerable time and energy to training, organising an annual training event for all its dealers and customers in the Middle East. Speaking about the training that took place in the final quarter of last year, Muneer Chan Basha, business development and customer services manager at Haulotte Middle East, tells CMME: “We conduct at least one technical training every year in Dubai where we invite all our ME distributors, dealers and our key account

customers. It happens generally during Q4 every year. It’s a minimum of three days and can be up to a week. Last year it was a week. It depends on the new models, what we launch from the factories, what kind of new technologies we implement and such other factors. Participants come from all the Gulf countries as well as from Egypt. Then there is Turkey, is one of our brightest markets. We start from Pakistan and we close with Egypt.” The curriculum is decided in consultation with the dealers and partners, he adds. “We have more than 60 models in our line-up and we also come up with new models all the time with new technology and new designs. So, we give our dealers the option of the models we can train them on at the annual training.

Among the numerous projects that Haulotte machines are involved with in the Middle East are such big-ticket ones as the Warner Bros theme park in Abu Dhabi.

“Also, it’s totally up to the dealers’ service managers or the management team to decide to nominate who are the people who need to attend the training. Sometimes they send their top technicians if they want to get to know new technologies, otherwise they send new technicians recruited for a new dedicated fast-moving line.” The training encompasses both classroom and hands-on session, with a mainly 50-50 split, Bashs explains. There are theoretical sessions to form a complete idea of the schematic diagrams, hydraulics, and electrical because all Haulotte machines are mechatronic with both mechanical and electronic components. “The trainees should not only have basic knowledge but also skilled knowledge about mechatronics, so we have both theoretical classroom sessions and practical sessions. It can start in the classroom but during the session we take them to the machines, so we bring the machines to where we do the training and then it’s on and off from classroom to machine as required. The objective is to learn and implement on the day-to-day job.” An established mantra for success in the market is to have the best-quality products and constantly innovate to provide the latest features and technologies, all the while backing it up with world-class service and training. Not all companies are able to follow this, but Haulotte seems to have made the entire process a habit, with which it has cemented its place among the top powered access brands in the world and also in the Middle East.

he powered access sector saw quite a bit of activity last year, with some big names in the international industry trying to get a foothold in the Middle East region. This was on the back of positive speculation towards an increase in asset spending based on the resumption of projects in the region. There has been a rise in demand with the rental segment in the region of late, in terms of refreshing or even increasing their fleet and a shift in focus towards safety in the region’s work areas with dedicated organisations endorsed by government looking for safer ways to getting work done. In this scenario, Sharbel Kordahi, managing director of Terex Equipment Middle East and sales director for Genie Aerial Work Platforms in the Middle East, South of Africa and Russia, says that while these are indeed key changes in the sector, some aspects have still not changed. And one of these aspects for Genie is its position as

geNie goes iNto micro scissors Responding to worldwide demand for low level access and space and weight restricted applications, Genie showed its GS-1330m scissor lift for the first time at Bauma China late last year. The maximum platform height unit has a maximum working height of 5.9m with a two-person, 227kg capacity and weighing in at only 889kg). The model will be available globally from this year. “Low level access is a growing segment in the aerial access industry, with increasing pressure to replace ladders with safe, productive alternatives,” said Mike Flanagan, Genie product manager, Terex AWP.

“The low-level access segment is poised to replace ladders in applications beyond the typical jobsite, including in industrial and institutional facilities. Additionally, growing need for productive solutions in low floor loading applications is driving innovation in lightweight product segments. The new Genie GS-1330m scissor lift is specifically designed to meet the needs of our customers in the ever-changing global mobile aerial work platform market.” The GS-1330m is equipped with an all-electric DC drive system for indoor jobsites with quiet, zero-emissions operation. We do not treat them as a number but give them whole rounded solutions which could be beneficial over the long run. “The quality of our equipment coupled with performance gives a great return on their investment, which over the long run shows why Genie has loyal customers.” Genie is known as a premier brand in the industry and all our equipment set the standard for competitors to follow. Its most popular products in this region are S85, Z62 & the GS3246 and GS4047, thanks to right mix of value for the invested capital. It’s the value for money that customers get for these products that make them popular, Kordahi adds. “At Genie, we try to incorporate safety in everything we do. Being a partner with IPAF and endorsing their trainings and certifications to our customers and distributors strengthens our values and safety standards. Globally, in every IPAF event, Genie is a partner and we try to strengthen our association with the IPAF brand however possible. IPAF summit this year reinforced that sustainability is the way forward which is in line with what we have been trying to promote in terms of innovation, being environmentally conscious with our line of hybrids,

27 eco products, and we would be more prominent in this in the coming years. With the event in March, Genie intends to make a prominent mark and would be a huge part of the event. We would be having our Genie president, the vice president of Global Sales & Marketing, as well as the EMEAR VP of Sales and Marketing attending the event and the IAPA awards. Our president would also be a delegate at the event and address the guests on behalf of Genie and IPAF.” Safety is one of the crucial pillars at Genie, and the company’s online TechPro training initiative has been much commended as it has helped save time spent in training an individual and has been a tool that sets certain criteria to attend a training. Since its launch there have already been over 270 courses which have been taken up by trainees in this region and has lessened the load for trainers to personally visit every request that arises. “Genie is a prominent fixture in the powered access sector and essential in almost every construction site in the region. To break the idea and present Genie as a versatile brand, we ventured into the FM sector in 2018 to make a mark in the industry. Our participation in FM expo and related activities helped in getting the recognition we aspired for. We presented our versatile range of Genie scissors which are safe to use both indoors and outdoors and our electrical range of Genie Scissors with no emissions and

With a range comprising hybrid, electric and bienergy models, Genie has excelled in the GCC region in the facilities management field in sports and liesure venues.

less noise. Our range of self-propelled Aerial work platforms and material lifts were presented as these equipment are one man operation and in most cases in the FM industry, less is more. Due to space constraints at the expo we couldn’t fully display the full range of our hybrids, Fuel Electric & Bi-Energy which would have been apt for the industry as well,” Kordahi says. In terms of service, Genie service support is based on country-specific requirements. “We have a strong network of authorized distributors across the region with strong service backing who help support our customers. In the UAE, we have appointed our Authorised Distributor as our Authorised Service Provider, Al Mahroos, to support the volume of requests we receive. Our ASPs work together to support our team of Genie technical experts in the regional office.” Genie as always is looking forward to further strengthening its foothold in the region. This is being aided with the appointing of newer distributors where needed, to be more accessible to its customers. “We look forward to strengthening our ties with our customers and being closer to them with more customer specific events such as rental summits, dealer summits and the like. Similar to the March 2018 distributor summit, we tend to have our distributor summit for 2019 a little later in September, due to IAPA awards in March and Bauma in April,” Kordahi says.

techPro helPs high skills While it is essential for rental technicians and engineers to have a sufficient level of expertise to keep equipment properly maintained and safe to operate, with the constraints of a daily job, finding the time for the necessary training can be challenging. To solve this dilemma, two years ago Genie introduced the Genie TechPro eLearning website –a flexible solution that has proved its worth in providing technical teams the ability to gain a higher-level skill set. Accessible to Genie account holders free of charge, the Genie TechPro site features more than 20 “foundation” and “advanced” level theoretical training modules, each lasting from two to four hours.

Covering a broad range of Genie products, as well as core skills such as electrics, hydraulics and wire rope inspections, a new course named “Genie Generic Systems on Booms” has recently been added to the TechPro menu. Focusing in generic Genie technologies such as load sense, hydraulic drive and control systems, this new course is one of five modules that are available in French, German and Spanish, as well as English. All future courses will be available in all four European languages. As Phase 1 of a two-step programme, Genie TechPro training courses are designed for familiarisation purposes

before attending instructorled, practical training. “One of the key benefits of our Genie Tech Pro site is that it offers our customers’ technical teams the flexibility they need to learn anywhere, at any time, with sessions that correspond to their level and schedule. If they want to go back over a subject, they can do so as many times as they need to. But this is not all,” says Geert Hansen, Genie technical trainer and training manager, Terex AWP for the EMEAR region. Each Genie TechPro module ends with a quiz test that enables users to evaluate their level. Neither an examination nor a Genie diploma,

the test allows technicians and engineers to check that their level is good enough to feel comfortable when they begin the second phase of instructor-led, practical training. As Hansen explains: “When the time comes for practical, instructorled training, having already acquired the necessary theory thanks to their Genie TechPro eLearning experience, all participants begin at the same level. In addition to making training more interesting, we have found that this approach boosts group interaction. As a result, participants learn the hands-on skills they have come for more rapidly and need less time to cover a wider range of Genie product families.

s one of the leading global manufacturers of aerial work platforms, you might expect the Snorkel brand to be among the leaders in the Middle East powered access market as well. The ground reality, however, is slightly different. While the blues, oranges and yellows of its competitors are common sights at Middle Eastern jobs-sites, the red of Snorkel is not as conspicuous. When CMME put this question to Mathew Elvin, CEO of Snorkel, he said this is only a transitory state of affairs and that will soon be rectified given the constantly rising uptake of Snorkel AWPs in the region. “Snorkel was founded in 1959 and has since become a leading global manufacturer of aerial work platforms. We have a longstanding reputation globally for our heavy-duty articulating and telescopic boom lifts, which are well-accepted in the Middle East. As the Snorkel product line has expanded, the brand is growing in popularity in the Middle East region, as many leading rental companies and contractors embrace the full mix of Snorkel products, including our industry-leading electric scissor lifts,” he elaborates. Snorkel produces one of the largest ranges of safe work-at-height solutions, with platform heights from 2m to 40m. Designed to be simple, reliable and robust, the Snorkel product range includes electric and diesel scissor and boom lifts, as well as towable booms and material lifts. Snorkel also offers lifts for working at low heights to replace traditional ladders or scaffold towers. Snorkel lifts are sold through a global distributor network, including across the Middle East, and they offer fast, local access to product support and spare parts. “We have experienced an improving market in the Middle East, which has aligned with the initiatives established by Snorkel’s new ownership, which became effective in October 2013. Snorkel is fortunate to have a well-established and reputable distributor network in the Middle East, supporting a wide range of customers.

“Snorkel is fortunate to have a well-established and reputable distributor network in the Middle East, supporting a wide range of customers. Some of our loyal customers within the region include AJI, Gulf Access Rental, Johnsons of Arabia, SafeLift, RK Access and Al-Laith”

Some of our loyal customers within the region include AJI, Gulf Access Rental, Johnsons of Arabia, SafeLift, RK Access and Al-Laith. Q-Fab, our direct distributor in Qatar, has a large rental fleet that mostly comprises Snorkel scissors and boom lifts. “The environment is always a big obstacle when consumers are deciding on which machines to use. The heat, humidity and sand are all region-specific obstacles for the Middle East. Due to these conditions, we strongly recommend users to keep up on routine maintenance checks for all machines.” Efficient maintenance is an important factor for customers, helping to minimise downtime and maximise revenues. As such, the new Snorkel scissors feature an “inside-out” tray design, which enables all hydraulic and electrical components to rotate outside of the machine chassis for easy access, explains Elvin. Snorkel articulating and telescopic boom lifts are designed to handle the toughest conditions, and have a proven long-working life in the Middle East, he adds. The company’s model range is 58-strong and all machines are available in the Middle East. Manufactured in the USA, UK or New Zealand, all Snorkel lifts come with a two-year parts and labour, and a five-year structural warranty as standard. “The Snorkel range includes families of electric and rough terrain scissor lifts, electric and diesel boom lifts, towable boom lifts, personnel lifts, mast lifts, telehandlers and material lifts, as well as one of the largest selections of low level access products in the industry.” “Innovative features that benefit the rental company, include ‘inside out’ access to all components and a single wheel nut on each wheel for faster maintenance, on-board diagnostics for easier troubleshooting, and as many common components across the range for reduced spare parts inventory and improved familiarity for service technicians,” says Elvin. In the Middle East, those technicians are often provided by Snorkel’s dealers, one of the largest among whom is Dubai-based Kanoo Machinery. The association between the two entities started in 2011, when Snorkel acquired Upright lifts, which was then represented by Kanoo in the region. Since then Kanoo has looked after Snorkel’s sales and service in the UAE and neighbouring countries, providing complete service and support to Snorkel customers while maintaining stock readiness for all spares and parts, whether slow or fast moving. Recognising that the Snorkel brands has scope for further penetration in the Middle East market, the Snorkel-Kanoo combine is going ahead on an action plan. “We are offering lots of information about Snorkel to the market. Consumers look for trustworthy, knowledgeable individuals to educate them on a purchase, and we have just the right people for that, who are highlighting the features and benefits of Snorkel lifts,” says Ahmed. “Another way we are approaching the market is through the demonstration of Snorkel machinery and their capabilities and advantages at work. Coupled with the high level of aftersales support that we offer to ensure cost effective ownership, we are optimistic about our prospects in the region. “Snorkel customers in GCC not only get a top global brand but also benefit from the back-up of a name as established and trusted as Kanoo in the region. This creates customer confidence that their operations will be fully supported, and they will have minimal downtime. On our part, the regional partnership means that we can arrange the required units and parts quickly and easily from other regions in order to meet customers’ emergency requirements.” Snorkel products are being adopted into many of the region’s leading rental fleets, and feedback has been positive. In particular, the Snorkel A38E is well-respected and very popular. The most popular machines in the Middle East are the two electric articulated boom lifts – the Snorkel A38E and A46JE. The lightweight

30

AWP JANUARY 2019

Snorkel A38E offers a working height of up to 13.5m and up to 5.9m of outreach. The battery-electric Snorkel A46JE is a versatile boom lift capable of working to heights up to 16.1m with a working outreach of 7.35m and a jib length of 1.5m. The best-selling Snorkel lift in the GCC and wider Middle East is the Snorkel A38E electric articulating boom lift. Lightweight but durable and reliable, the Snorkel A38E offers, class-leading performance, with a working height up to 13.5m and up to 5.9m of outreach. The up-and-over articulated/ telescopic boom design provides the operator with a superb working envelope, and features powered platform rotation and Snorkel Guard secondary guarding as standard. The Snorkel A38E is part of an electric articulating boom lift family that combines superb manoeuvrability with clean and quiet operation, delivering working heights of up to 16.0m from zero emission, batterypowered machines. Safety is another huge aspect of Snorkel machines and is an area that is central to the company’s philosophy of excellence. Among the recent safety advancements that Snorkel has developed for its MEWPs is a trigger guard solution that will be fitted as standard to all new Snorkel lifts that have an enable switch operated joystick. The new trigger guard fits directly onto the joystick, providing an additional level of protection over the enable switch to reduce the likelihood of involuntary movement, without affecting normal operation of the controls. The new trigger guard is also available as a retrofit solution for legacy Snorkel electric and rough terrain scissor lifts, as well as any Snorkel models with an enable switch operated joystick, including some electric boom lifts, towable booms and mast booms. “We take safety seriously, and the introduction of the trigger guard solution provides operators with an additional level of protection on machines which utilise an enable switch operated joystick, from involuntary movement,” says Elvin. “As with our Snorkel Guard secondary guarding system for boom lifts, we felt it important to not only offer a solution on new build machines, but also make it available on as many of our legacy machines as possible.” This product improvement is now included as standard on new build Snorkel lifts with an enable switch operated joystick. The retrofit solution is in stock and available to order globally, and Snorkel is offering a special introductory price to all customers through the end of 2018. The trigger guard can be ordered via Snorkel parts departments globally.

Not only does Snorkel’s have a versatile range of both diesel and electric models, its machines also have features like easy access to critical components for easy maintenance.

success with kAnoo The association between Snorkel and Kanoo Machinery started in 2011, when Snorkel acquired Upright lifts, which was then represented by Kanoo in the region. Since then Kanoo has looked after Snorkel’s sales and service in the UAE and neighbouring countries, providing complete service and support to Snorkel customers while maintaining stock readiness for all spares and parts, whether slow or fast moving. The Snorkel-Kanoo combine has notched up many success since then. Elaborating on some achievements in the last two years, Niaz Ahmed, marketing manager, Kanoo Industrial and Energy, tells CMME: “Last year we achieved a growth of around 430% in Bahrain when compared to 2016. And so far this year, we have improved on our 2017 achievements by approximately a further 184%.” There was also considerable growth in the UAE, while despite a slide in the Saudi market last year, Snorkel is still expecting some rebound this year. “In the UAE, we achieved a growth of around 171% last year compared to 2016 and have then expanded 65% so far this year over last year’s levels. The Saudi market continues to be slow as it was in 2017, but already this year we see signs that are encouraging enough for us to expect at least 80% of last year,” Ahmed says. Snorkel customers and end-users in the region now include some top names in the construction, contracting, fleet rental, oil & gas and facilities management sectors, he reveals. “In Bahrain we have supplied Snorkel lifts to the Bahrain Petroleum company and Mondale Bahrain. Among the major projects in the UAE, we have units running with Meeras, Nakheel and Emaar, to name

a few top companies, through service providers and rental companies like Johnson Arabia and Al Laith, while more are being targeted. In the UAE, the main sector for our customers is facility management, followed closely by the rental sector and then the local industry. In Saudi Arabia , meanwhile, the key customers that use Snorkel products are RK Access with 42 units, NCC with 17 and Al Shwair with 10 units,” explains Ahmed. Apart from construction,

Snorkel lifts are finding great traction in the region in the maintenance of airports, hospitals, schools and public facilities, such as libraries. Warehouses and utilities, too, are among the places where Snorkel lifts can be spotted at work in the region, Ahmed adds. Scissors and articulated boom lifts are the top-selling models for Snorkel in the region, he adds, and the fast-moving models are the A38E, S4732E, S4726, A46JRT, S3226E and the S3219E.

Chinese powered aCCess pioneer sinoboom is embarking on a new strategy of targeting the middle east rental seCtor with a wide model range and an emphasis on serviCe and baCk-up while leveraging its traCk reCord, trevis Zhao, regional sales manager, tells CMME Please give an overview of Sinoboom as a company and a manufacturer of access equipment Sinoboom is the leading Chinese manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms (MEWP) and one of the first Chinese companies to make powered access products. The company has an illustrious history in the MEWP manufacturing field and is the only member of the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) from Asia. In fact, the first IPAF training centre in China was opened by Sinoboom Sinoboom is the No.1 boom lift brand from China and is a leading innovator in the aerial work platforms space. We are located in Changsha, China’s capital for construction and heavy machinery, where we rub shoulders with some other globally famous Chinese brands like Sany, Zoomlion and Sunward. Sinoboom specialises in the research, manufacture, sales and service of a wide range of access solutions, including self-propelled telescopic boom lifts, self-propelled articulating boom lifts, self-propelled scissor lifts, self-propelled spider boom lifts and truck-mounted boom lifts, with working heights from 4m to 44m. As one of the earliest MEWP manufacturers in China, we have gathered a wealth of experience and innovations under our belt. Not only are our products readily available across China, they also enjoy a healthy presence overseas, including in Europe, the Americas, Japan, Australia, the Middle East and Africa. As a pioneer of aerial work platform manufacturing in China, we pride ourselves on an outstanding grasp of core technology. Sinoboom has attained more than 100 independent intellectual property rights, with utility patents, core technologies, technical capabilities and quality performance being well established by domestic and international authorities in the trade. As a member of IPAF and the China Engineering Machinery Association, Sinoboom was listed by and given government support as one of the key enterprises in the under 100 billion RMB industrial clusters (for equipment manufacturing). Moreover, Sinoboom has passed the Australian ADR certification, European CE and Russian GOST standards, apart from being honoured as a high-tech enterprise by the Department of Science

and Technology of China’s Hunan Province, where we are based. Sinobbom products are widely used in ship repair and construction, civil engineering, electric power, communications, landscaping, advertising, event venues and stadiums, airports, harbours, various large factories, underground railways and mines. Our dynamic range can easily meet the demands of various customers and applications. When Sinoboom developed its 44m self-propelled telescopic boom lift, it was the highest boom lift of its time, firmly cementing the company’s place on the world stage. Sinoboom is not a particularly well-known MEWP brand in the Middle East when compared to some others. What are you doing to address this? Sinoboom entered the Middle East market in 2010 and we have penetrated the Saudi Arabian, Bahraini and UAE markets. Sinoboom is the only manufacturer from China that has attended and been involved with the IPAF Middle East Convention for three years. At the moment Sinoboom is not as well known in the Middle East as it should be given our quality and track record, and the reason for that is down to our past marketing strategy. Previously we just looked for dealers and focused on the sales. The MEWP business, however, is totally different from traditional construction since its major business comes from rental instead of sales. So now we’ve retuned our strategy to find partners and do more work in the rental field. We will also be very proactive in marketing and brand building work in the Middle East from now on, because we believe we have the products, the quality and the competitiveness to do well in this market. There is a perception in the region that Chinese manufacturers generally have both low-cost and low-quality products when compared to the more famous Western brands. What are you doing to address this? This perception is not true anymore and is merely a stereotype. When you look around, JLG, Genie and Haulotte, which are the leading brands in the Middle East market, all have factories in China. Can you say that the products they manufacture in China are of low quality and cost? Sinoboom products are widely accepted and well used in more than 80 countries in the world, including in quality-conscious Europe, America, Japan and Australia, not because they are cheap, but because of their high quality, high reliability and good cost performance. Working at heights is

middle east suCCess With its machines serving in several large projects in the Middle East, Sinoboom is no stranger to the region. Trevis Zhao points out that the brand has a substantial track record in the region, especially in Saudi Arabia, where the projects that Sinoboom has supplied machinery to reads like an honour roll of the most prestigious builds in the region. Among the most visible projects, at least in the popular imagination, is the Umbrella Tent in Islam’s second holiest site in Madina, Saudi Arabia, where Sinoboom provided machines in 2011. Apart from this, Sinoboom MEWPs have been involved in building and maintaining the Jeddah airport and seaport, the Royal Terminal and Terminal 5 at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh as well as the Saudi capital’s Metro system. In the oil & gas sector Sinoboom MEWPs have left their tread marks on Saudi Aramco’s Jubail project, while they can be found right working now in the construction of the stadiums for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“In the UAE, Sinoboom’s GTZZ25J articulating boom lift was able to master even the hottest desert conditions as it assisted with a mining project in Ras Al Khaimah. With a maximum working height of up to 26.6m, and a level of extension of up to 16.1m, the GTZZ25J has one of the largest ranges among all of our MEWPs,” Zhao says. “The machine lift was used in the project for the maintenance of mining equipment. Despite the fact that the customer’s site was in a mountain location, the GTZZ25J offered excellent performance as a result of its 45% gradeability and received great praise from the customer. “Our customers trust the helping hand that Sinoboom equipment gives them as well as the reliability, the testimony for which is that our machines delivered years ago are still in good condition. The feedback from our customers is that Sinoboom offers efficiency and higher cost-effective performance when compared to European brands.”

risky; operators and rental companies will only consider safe tools – and Sinoboom is one of them. How have the past couple of years been for Sinoboom? What position do you see yourself in, in terms of market share for the powered access segment in regions outside of China and especially in the Middle East? Sinoboom has targeted the international market ever since it was established, with the result that now 50% of our revenue comes from sales outside of China. Sinoboom is performing very well in some markets outside China where our market share is reaching up to 30% or more. We may be new for some GCC countries – and part of the reason for this is our previous strategy to focus on sales rather than rental – but people in the global MEWP business know us very well. We have years of specialisation in the MEWP business and have devoted great efforts to the research and development of new products and product upgrades while being actively involved in the global market. Please give an overview of your model range that is available for customers in the Middle East region. What is your bestselling product here and why do you think it’s popular in the Middle East? Sinoboom offers a comprehensive range of MEWP equipment with articulating, telescoping and scissor lifts powered by both diesel and electric motors. We offer diesel

35

articulating and telescopic boom lifts ranging in working heights from 15m to 44m and we also have diesel scissor lifts from 8m to 18m in working height. Our electrical articulating boom lifts range from 14m to 18m, while our electrical scissor lifts go from 4m to 16m. The diesel articulating boom lifts and telescopic boom lifts are our largest volume pushers in the Middle East. We attribute this to the nature of the market here, which leads to major demand for boom lifts. Keeping this is mind, we design and upgrade our products to be in compliance with the local conditions and suitable to the heat and harsh environment of the region. Sinoboom started its product portfolio with diesel boom lifts and so we have more experience in boom lifts. What modifications does Sinoboom make to its models for sale in the Middle East to suit the job-site conditions and demands in this region? Sinoboom believes in customising its products to suit target markets and provide optimum performance wherever in the world our machines are working in. The Middle East presents its own sets of challenges for equipment manufacturers with its unique climatic conditions. The most notable feature of the Middle Eastern job-site is the heat factor. There are also safety considerations. To tackle these challenges all Sinoboom units in the Middle East are equipped with a hydraulic cooling system. This effectively combats the extreme heat that many jobs

Sinoboom access equipment can be seen working in some prestigious projects in the GCC region, such as in the maintenance of the facilities at Islamic holy sites in Madina, KSA.

here are performed under, ensuring smooth and down-time free operation even in summer. On the safety side, our machines come with a second guiding scaffold to ensure operators and workers have greater protection while working at heights. How is Sinoboom approaching the

maintenance, after-sales service and parts availability of its machines for the Middle East region? Sinoboom attaches great importance to maintenance, after-sales service and parts availability because we know how important constant uptime is for our users. We have put in place certain measures to support our customers in the region. The first step we take is to provide on-site training for basic maintenance to the customer when a machine is delivered. Further training is available with specific training materials and videos. We also make sure all manuals are easily obtainable. We offer 24 Hours service support to our customers in the region with a professional service team that has about 5-8 years of experience in MEWP maintenance, repair skills and knowledge. Sinoboom is also basing a service engineer in the Middle East, especially for the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Another important support is our parts warehouse in Saudi Arabia, while a new parts warehouse will soon be based in the UAE too, gradually expanding to other GCC countries. And last and by no means the least, this year will see a great new development for Sinoboom’s overseas markets: we will use telematics and the internet of things to combine data and information on our machines with our parts ordering system on-line, making maintenance even more seamless and increasing uptime further.

NEW RELEASES JANUARY 2019

added safety oN JlG boom lifts Why get it? enhAnced protection for both operAtor And surroundings while working At heights

New VolVo pipelayer kit lowers tCo Why get it? Added versAtility for excAvAtors, eAsy to Assemble And trAnsport Volvo’s new mini pipelayer kit for EC140D, EC140E and ECR145E excavators enables customers to benefit from the safety, accuracy and efficiency of a dedicated pipelayer that can also quickly and easily convert back to a standard excavator when needed for better utilisation and profitability. Investing in a dedicated pipelayer is not justifiable if lowering pipes is not the only job. There is more commercial justification for a standard excavator that can also lay pipes, in that case. That’s where the new mini pipelayer kit from Volvo CE comes in. Suitable for EC140D, EC140E and ECR145E excavators and launched initially for less regulated markets, the mini pipelayer kit enables Volvo customers to add a specialised pipelayer to their fleet with relatively low investment that can quickly and easily switch between pipelaying and standard excavator solutions, ensuring high utilisation rates. Lars-Inge Larsson, global product manager for pipelayers at Volvo CE, says: “We developed the kit in response to customers’ safety concerns about lowering pipes into trenches using standard excavators. In Argentina, for example,

such operations are not acceptable on the majority of projects these days.” The kit is suitable for lowering pipes of up to approximately 300mm into a trench. A Load Management Indicator (LMI) monitors the load status and signals when the maximum safe workload has been reached (3.3 t) so that the operator can work risk-free on up to a 10º slope. The LMI system includes a line rider assembled on the wire rope and a separate display in the cabin. It is not as sophisticated as on the larger Volvo rotating pipelayers but meets current customer expectations and needs. Assembled together with the pipelayer jib as one unit, the winch can be operated by the left-hand joystick (usually for the dipper arm) or the right-hand proportional X1switch, according to operator preference. Only one movement, instead of two, is required during the lowering in. This makes it much more comfortable and easier for the operator, who can then complete the job safely and precisely. The kit is easy to assemble – a contractor can convert an excavator into a pipelayer or vice versa in as little as two to three hours – and is easy to send in a box from jobsite to jobsite. JLG, a leading global name in the manufacturer of aerial work platforms and telehandlers, has announced the release of SkyGuardSkyLine enhanced control panel protection system as the new standard for boom lifts in Europe, Middle East, Africa, India and Russia. The new safety innovation is the result of customer feedback stemming from the release of SkyGuard in 2012, says the company. SkyGuard SkyLine features a slim wire rope design that is bolted to the left side the platform with an opposing magnetic connection. If the operator contacts the cable, and the magnet detaches, the system stops all boom lift functions, then momentarily reverses or undoes most functions that were in use when the system was activated. This reverse functionality was pioneered by JLG in 2012. Jan-Willem van Wier, senior product marketing manager for JLG in EMEA, said: “This enhanced safety feature is another step forward for JLG as we continue to innovate to meet the changing needs of the access industry needs. “The customer and end-user feedback on the original SkyGuard system was very positive, and this new feature is a natural evolution of the technology.” From November 2018 through early 2019, SkyGuard SkyLine will be phased into most boom lift models as a standard feature. However, interested customers will have the option to purchase the original bar style SkyGuard system.

New Cat uNderGrouNd miNiNG loader Why get it? clAss-leAding pAyloAds, high breAkout forces And operAtor comfort Caterpillar recently launched the Cat R1700 Underground Mining Loader, a completely new design that the company says has proven its high productivity and efficiency in extended field trials and in production studies. The R1700 carries a size-class-leading payload of 15t, 20% more than its predecessor, yet maintains the dimensions of the R1700G. A recent head-to-head study and multiple field trials show that the machine leverages its payload advantage to deliver much faster truck loading and more productive load-and-carry operations while using significantly less fuel per hour. The R1700 gains cycle time advantages through fast bucket loading due to high breakout forces and a new traction control system that limits tire slip when the bucket enters the pile. The result is

fast loading, good bucket fill factors and reduced tire wear. Excellent machine balance and a new electrohydraulic braking system aid load-and-carry cycles. Fuel efficiency gets a boost in the new R1700 from on-demand adjustment of the cooling fan and the hydraulic system, as well as the efficiency of the Cat C13 engine. The 6-cylinder engine is turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled, and it produces 361hp in standard configuration and 345hp in EU Stage V compliant form. The engine is available in three different emissions configurations — Cat Ventilation Reduction, US EPA Tier 3/EU Stage IIIA, and EU Stage V — to allow tailoring the R1700 to the ventilation needs of the mine. To boost productivity even further, the R1700 is designed to make best use of technology. Optional Autodig helps new operators be productive the first day and reduces fatigue for experienced operators. MineStar Command for underground offers a selection of control technologies — line-of-

PrEvENTivE maiNTENaNcE Take a few minutes every day to perform preventive maintenance checks on your equipment. Prepare a checklist of all basic functions before each use and go through them to ensure they are in order. Then set out a time after the day’s work is over to go through the checklist and conduct any maintenance tasks that can be done. Also check the oil daily. These will go a long way towards preserving equipment and ensuring safety.

iNsPEcT rEgularly Make it a point to carry out pre-start, frequent and annual inspections on your aerial work platform. Follow a schedule of regular inspections and maintenance work to extend the life of your machine, as well as to ensure it performs at optimal levels. Paying the required regular attention to your kit reduces the chances of costly surprises due to neglect.

TailOrEd maiNTENaNcE Some regions, such as the Middle East, offer climate and site conditions that demand specific ways for maintenance to be conducted. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach to proper AWP maintenance. The Middle East’s high heat, humidity, salt-laden coastal air and dust and sand all play their part in increasing wear and tear, making maintenance in this region quite different compared to, say, Europe. Any maintenance plan needs to pay special attention to local conditions for the effective upkeep of equipment.

maiNTaiN rEcOrds Establishing a historical record of equipment maintenance by compiling detailed maintenance logs will help to identify and minimise recurring problems. Proper documentation establishes a record of compliance as well as a history of repairs, which assists in correcting persistent maintenance issues. It also helps reassure users that their equipment is performing properly and has received the attention necessary to ensure uninterrupted performance.

08

Quick rEsPONdErs Breakdowns happen, regardless of how much attention you pay to maintenance. Perhaps the worst part of breakdowns is the downtime that results, pushing up costs and delaying projects. It is essential that response times to such emergencies be swift, to keep work interruptions to a minimum. This requires experienced equipment and service providers as partners, who are able to provide industry standard or faster response times.

Crushers & breakers JANUARY 2019

Not only is MB Crusher one of the pioneers of the mobile crushing bucket, but it has also kept innovating and wears its ‘made in Italy’ quality as a badge of pride.

“The result our crusher buckets provide is competitiveness - in all those complex-to-reach sites. We are thrilled when our customers tell us we easily reach areas where other machines are unable to go or would be extremely expensive to take to. It summaries all our efforts”

s every contractor knows, aggregate is a stubborn thing. It can sometimes have an iron will to add to the cost of a project, whether in demolition, roadbuilding, quarrying or any other sector where it is generated. How exactly it does its mischief is easy enough to explain: you go into a demolition site and after tearing a structure to smithereens there is not much you can do with the rubble the way it is. Sure, it can always be recycled and reused, but that is another cost addition to the project because first it has to be loaded onto trucks - or dumpers in case of mines and quarries – and taken to a crushing plant, a behemoth which itself has to be first carried to a suitable place and installed. All this costs money, and sometimes it can be money that has not been adequately factored into a project. Now imagine if the crusher came to the demolition or quarry site in a neat, bundlesized package, attached itself onto your excavator and did the crushing for you right there, leading to the final reusable product leaving the job-site. A few time-taking, costly steps – and fuel expenses – are immediately taken out of the equation. The concept it simple enough and has existed for a while now. And among its foremost exponents are the likes of MB

Crusher and Epiroc. While the former is an Italian giant that is near synonymous with the mobile bucket crusher, the latter is an erstwhile member of Swedish giant Atlas Copco that was spun off and now stands for quality and efficiency in its own sphere. According to MB Crusher, is the job-site is located on a mountain top, a remote island, a historical centre or an urban area, the first things that comes to a contractor’s mind is complexity and cost, daily unforeseen circumstances and perhaps delays. The outcome is low overall profitability. A common refrain of contractors is that they are bound by road haulage, therefore demanding or arduous jobsites make the job pricey. “MB Crusher began seeing things differently since our first crusher bucket, patented in 2001. All MB innovations provide a different perspective: it is not the material that needs to be moved; it’s the machine that process it on-site instead,” says Michelle Cappellari, sales supervisor at MB Crusher. “The result our crusher buckets provide is competitiveness - in all those complexto-reach sites. We are thrilled when our customers tell us we easily reach areas where other machines are unable to go or would be extremely expensive to take to. It summaries all our efforts.” Digging into her comprehensive insight of needs from around the world, she adds: “We look into limitation and constrains as challenges. Our biggest satisfaction is offering our clients solutions to transform weaknesses

Crushers & breakers JANUARY 2019

“The oscillating moving jaw combined with a quick grain size adjustment makes it one of the most versatile, high performing mobile crushers with a low maintenance and operation cost” into strengths. Useful, convenient, profitable, even in extreme locations, with our method.” One example in the Middle East region is a recent project in Lebanon. Platinum Concrete, a batching plant operating in Mount Lebanon, and a sister company of a quarry in Dahr el Baidar area, is the biggest quarry site in Lebanon. The quarry/concrete owners, Koukach & Co., were suffering from lack of sand for their batching operation and so they were looking for a more efficient sand operation to keep their concrete mixing. They also had a high proportion of sand stone in their sand stock, so they needed a solution that could help them to maximise the profit using this stocked material. They found it in a MB Crusher bucket BF90.3, supplied by local dealer Amtrac Abdelmassih Trading Co. Mounted on a Volvo EC290B excavator in their batching site, the MB crusher bucket has been used to crush their sand stone into smaller and easily fractured stones to be reused in the concrete mixing operation. In this way the client managed to crush the sand stone boulders into very small stones that can be fractured in a second stage crusher. Anthony Abdelmassih explains: “Onsite crushing in fact presents considerable advantages for our clients who do not have to face the costs of handling demolished materials, in addition to those of disposal. Thus, as well as recognising added value in our work, they also obtain an overall increase in savings compared to that which they would have achieved with traditional systems.”

As well as excavations and demolitions, Abdelmassih also operates in the industrial sector. “In particular we have had excellent results in providing MB crushers for the sector that reduces the volume of glass bottles and containers, an operation which has allowed them to recuperate and exploit the crushed material as much as possible, as well as avoiding spillage of the liquid from the containers themselves.” Cappellari adds that whatever the size of the excavator or of the job-site, it is sufficient

Epiroc, an erstwhile member the Atlas Copco group, now carries forward the Swedish giant’s standards in its extensive range of hydraulic breakers and bucket crushers.

to install an MB crusher bucket to handle the product transformation without trucks coming and going and thus significantly reducing costs. Moreover, there is no need for exceptional freight haulage because MB’s entire range can be easily moved to the site, even the Crusher Bucket BF150.10 or the Screening Bucket MB-S23, the biggest in the world. “All MB equipment have been designed to play an active role in any situation, even the most extreme: there is no limitation to the type of site, the location, or the fleet. Ranging from 70t excavators to 3.5t skid-steers, including backhoe loaders and telehandlers, there is always a suitable match with an MB unit. The installation is straight-forward and fast, characteristic of attachments, whether it is the big units or the smallest of the MB range,” Capellari explains. Another company that offers advanced mobile crushing tools is Epiroc. After a long history as part of the Atlas Copco group, it is “now ready for the future with a passion for making what’s good even better”, says Fiaz Ghani, regional business line manager, Middle East and East Africa. “The name Epiroc means ‘at rock’, reflecting our focus on mining, rock excavation and natural resources, our proximity to customers and the strength of our partnerships. We have customers in more than 150 countries in the mining, quarrying, drilling, oil & gas, civil engineering, deconstruction and recycling sectors,” he adds. “Our BC range of bucket crushers are uniquely designed, with two powerful

47 hydraulic motors, have a narrower design due to absence of a transmission cover on both sides and can reverse their running direction to remove jammed material. The oscillating moving jaw combined with a quick grain size adjustment makes it one of the most versatile, high performing mobile crushers with a low maintenance and operation cost. “The BC range comprises four models from 2,2-6t, suitable for fitment on excavators from 18–54t capacity. In terms of productivity, the BC crushers have a 25-30% higher productivity when compared to similar sizes of mobile crushers in the market.” Break first So much for the crushers, but in order to have material to crush, one fist needs to tear something apart o or break it. And this, of course, is the domain of the hydraulic breaker, another tool that Epiroc is known for. “We have a comprehensive range of premium and essential hydraulic breakers, with sizes from 55kg to 10t suitable for fitment on small, medium and heavy carriers from a ton up to 140t,” Ghani says. “Some of the outstanding features of our breakers are AutoControl, which automatically switches stroke length from short-stoke, high frequency for soft rock to long-stroke, normal frequency for hard rock. Our Energy Recovery feature automatically utilises piston recoil energy to reduce vibration levels with simultaneous increase of performance. “A patented Intelligent Protection System

Mobile crusher buckets, such as MB Crusher’s products, save time and money while providing a greener solution, as they can be used with any excavator right at the job-site.

(IPS) automatically adjusts the start-up and shutdown behaviour during breaker operation, combining easy positioning with maximum blank firing protection, while our PowerAdapt is a built-in pressure cut-off valve, preventing overloading on breakers above 2t.” Besides there the optional DustProtector II two-stage active sealing system prevents dust ingression into the lower hammer part, extending the life of components and lowering chisel paste (grease) consumption,

he explains and adds that one of the lowest noise and vibration levels in the industry is ensured by Epiroc’s VibroSilenced Plus, which is a non-metallic suspension of the percussion mechanism inside the fullysealed breaker box. “The SB range of small hydraulic breakers - 55kg to 1.1t - besides being equipped with many of these features, are well known for their ‘Solid Body’ design, which is a singlepiece cast steel body with very few moving parts and without tensioning bolts.”

The new CuTTing edge

mb crusher mb-r500 cuTTer head While the crusher bucket is its staple, MB Crusher also has cutting tools in its kitty. And the Italian company premiered a new mini excavator cutter head at Intermat. The brand-new MB-R500, the latest addition to the MB Crusher range grinds particularly resistant and tough materials, such as fragmented rocks, according to the manufacturer, but it can also work with precision on soft materials, such as asphalt. The new MB-R500 simplifies excavation operations for the positioning of support plinths for buildings, especially in areas where

the subsoil is particularly resistant. It digs trenches for pipes laying, and restores the banks of rivers and streams with speed and precision. It is also suitable for urban areas, where vibrations and noises must be contained and can be used underwater. Particularly suited for road works, the MB-R500 cutter head makes it possible to perform excavations within a minimum size and recover material to reuse, making it unnecessary to dispose of the asphalt crusts from excavations. The new MB-R500 is the smallest cutter head in MB

Crusher’s range, weighing only 300kg. It can be installed on mini and midi excavators from 3-12t, and on skid steer loaders and backhoe loaders from 3-8t. Its cutter head has a diameter of 500mm and the drum can be replaced on site in less than an hour. Like the other MB-R cutter models, it comes with a full or low set drum head kit, which allows changing the number of peaks depending on the material to grind. The nebuliser kit and the drum cover kit reduce dust emission and allow it to carry out job in enclosed and indoor spaces, such as tunnels and basements.
