DIGGING DEEP When it comes to earthmoving machinery, Sunward is not a household name – not yet at any rate. The Chinese OEM is a young company and an even younger entrant in the regional market. Yet, this upcoming brand has managed to supply its earthmovers to one of the most prestigious projects currently being executed in the Middle East – the Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai. Sunward’s success in the project, as in some other key ones with its local partner CMC, is a sign that the construction landscape in the region are still immensely functional and there are projects out there to supply. Every threat comes with opportunities. They are like two sides of the same coin. As the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis depressed the Middle East construction market, OEMs, dealers and other companies responded to the situation, digging deep to figure out how to operate in what is now the new normal. Whether it’s Cat or Hitachi with new machines or Auger Torque, Blumaq, Magna or BKT with new components and tyres, this report brings you a snapshot of today’s earthmoving sector.

hen it comes to earthmoving equipment – as it does for construction machinery of any kind – the name Caterpillar is usually among the top names in terms of quality, range of offerings and customer preference. And it’s no different in the GCC region. According to regional machinery giant Mohamed AbdulRahman Al-Bahar, the Cat® dealer for the GCC excluding Saudi Arabia, two important machines in the Cat range for the region at the moment are the 345 GC excavator and the D8T track-type tractor bulldozer. Going through the details of the machines, Samer Ismail, earthmoving and excavation product manager at Al-Bahar, says the Cat D8T is one of the most important dozer models in the GCC region. “The Cat D8T Track-Type Tractor is the latest Cat dozer. It offers high horsepower, better dozing efficiency and fuel savings. The machine comes with updated cooling and a new power train, powered by a proven Cat C15 ACERT engine, delivers up to 20% better ambient capability. A choice of Cat Connect GRADE technology options help you get more work done in less time,” Ismail says. He explains that the latest generation D8T bulldozer comes with new features for higher productivity, even in the harshest conditions. The key numbers for the new D8T are up to 18% better dozing efficiency for more
productivity and up to 10% fuel savings to move more material with every litre of fuel. “Whether you work in desert heat or arctic cold, the D8T takes on the toughest conditions. The largest Semi-Universal blade in the size class helps you move more material with every pass – up to 13% more. To handle the desert heat, a purposebuilt Desert Arrangement includes added cooling performance and more protection for working in extremely sandy or abrasive conditions. This makes the new D8T ideally suited for the working conditions we have here in the Middle East.” Ismail explains. Coming to the technology of the machine, he adds that the CAT LINK technology takes the complexity out of job-sites and “serves it up to you in customisable formats”. “Product Link collects machine data that can be viewed online through web and mobile applications. You can access the information anytime and anywhere with VisionLink and use it to make informed decisions that boost productivity, lower costs, simplify maintenance, and improve security on your job-site,” Ismail says. The D8T meets the demands of desert applications with several special features ideally suited to supporting machine performance and service life in extremely sandy or abrasive conditions. Explaining these, Ismail adds: “There’s a Pre-cleaner Turbine air intake system that prevents nearly all of the heavier-than-air particles from entering the system, which results in longer air filter life,

more efficient engine performance and decreased maintenance expenses. “The engine enclosure doors are solid at the bottom to help reduce the amount of sand carried into the engine compartment for improved cooling and reduced cleanout time. A specially coated fan and radiator core protection help resist abrasion while a sealed bottom guard and added seals help keep fine abrasive particles out. “The bottom guard access panels facilitate cleanout without removing the bottom guard, while the wear plates can be replaced to give you longer blade life when working in abrasive conditions. And the operator has not been forgotten either, with a cab-mounted air conditioning condenser recommended to help improve system performance and aid serviceability.” The Cat D8T can keep working, even in high temperatures, with increased cooling capability and push in second gear for more dozing productivity. Meanwhile, the hydraulic demand fan saves fuel by reducing fan speed in cooler conditions. “Inside the cab, it’s stacked with features and tools that operators will love. There is an optional reversing capability for high debris conditions

and the auto shift automatically downshifts to the most efficient gear based on load, adding to overall fuel savings,” Ismail adds. “In the telematics department, the Cat D8T comes with Cat GRADE with Slope Assist, which automatically maintains pre-established blade position without a GPS signal. The versatile, scalable Cat AccuGrade is an optional dealer-installed grade control system. To enable you to get the right level of accuracy to match your job requirements there is a choice of Laser, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) or Universal Total Station (UTS).” Ismail informs. To keep the machine running, ease of maintenance has been built into the design. Ismail points out that there are wider engine panel doors and optional bottom guard access panels for easier maintenance access. “There is a ‘fast-fuel’ system at ground level, with positive fuel shutoff, helping prevent fuel spillage or waste and speeding up refuelling for more uptime. There are also ‘Ecology drains’ to help reduce spills during power train fluid changes, while the high-speed oil change attachment helps make servicing even faster.” Coming to the Cat 345 GC excavator, Ismail says the model is noted for its dependable performance, high productivity features, and reduced costs, helped by CAT LINK technology that makes owning and operating the machine simpler. “The Cat 345 GC is a smart choice for operations where high reliability and low-cost-per-hour performance are priorities. Add in a quiet and comfortable ROPS cab, easy-to-use controls, and multiple Cat attachment options and you have a tough 45t excavator capable of a variety of tasks. “With up to 25% more fuel efficiency the 345 GC gets work done efficiently with balanced power and control. Another key figure for the 345 GC is 30% lower maintenance costs, part of which is the lower maintenance maintenance intervals, which also translates into increased uptime,” Ismail concludes.

B
obcat has supplied a large order of 22 new S550 skidsteer loaders to the Egyptian government for use in one of the largest governorates in the north of the country. The compact equipment specialist said the machines were delivered recently by Otrac Heavy Equipment, the authorised Bobcat dealer in Egypt, and are being used in a new cleaning and maintenance programme instituted and supported by the Egyptian government. The 22 new Bobcat S550 skid-steer loaders have each been supplied with a Bobcat bucket and will be used for ditching and street cleaning work in the major cities in the governorate. A Bobcat statement quoted a spokesperson of the governorate as saying: “We purchased the Bobcat brand based on the excellent experience we have had running Bobcat skid-
steer loaders, particularly their durability and reliability, backed by the superb aftermarket service provided by Otrac.” Hatem Ouda, chairman of Otrac Heavy Equipment, said: “We are delighted that Bobcat skid-steer loaders have been chosen to carry out this important work. The Egyptian government and Otrac have a successful, long standing relationship, involving the purchase of many machines, including an order for 21 new Bobcat skid-steer loaders supplied by Otrac three years ago.” According to Bobcat, among the advantages offered by skid-steer loaders that the convinced the governorate are their compactness and ability to easily operate in the narrow streets in the district, together with their high performance for loading rubbish into collection vehicles. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East and Africa, at Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said:
“We congratulate our dealer, Otrac Heavy Equipment, for securing this order, which is a great testament to the professionalism and expertise they always offer their customers in Egypt. An important aspect is the impressive stock of new Bobcat equipment, including skid-steer, backhoe and telescopic loaders maintained by Otrac at all times, ensuring they are the only supplier that can meet any sudden demand for equipment.” The Bobcat S550 is the big brother of the S450 model, which is highly popular in the Middle East. According to Bobcat, the S550 is as compact as its younger sibling but packs more power and capacity, which extend its capabilities when lifting heavy loads or using high-powered attachments. The added performance comes with what Bobcat says is its usual durability and ease of maintenance, while providing high breakout forces, faster cycle times and quicker turns.
7 The cab of the S550 provides a large and comfortable environment for the operator, who enjoys more visibility. Another Bobcat feature is the pressurised cab, which is especially useful while working environments and job-sites where the prevalence of sand, dirt, dust, mud and debris are at their worst. The enclosed cab on the S550 has a pressurised interior space that keeps down dust to a minimum, keeping the operator clean, comfortable, healthy and more productive. A one-piece seal and unique, curved door pocket ensure that the operator enjoys good protection and also helps to keeps the cool air inside the cab in the hot summer conditions and the warm air in during cold weather. And when it comes to combating the heat, Bobcat’s patented cooling system
features a dual-path design that cools more efficiently, with a quiet fan that only turns as fast as needed. For added reliability, the radiator and hydraulic oil cooler are safely protected from job-site hazards. Several features and systems are also provided to reduce operating costs, such as preventative maintenance that’s completed quickly. The entire Bobcat skid-steer range supports versatile attachment options and so does the S550, says the manufacturer. Another unique Bobcat feature available on the S550 is the “only maintenance-free chaincase on the market”, says the company. The chiancase on the S550 comes with “exclusive fixed axle tubes, stronger axles, and fully sealed bearings to maximise uptime and peace of mind”, according to Bobcat. The protected axle seals never
need adjustments or greasing. “Endless roller, high-strength oval chains (HSOC) are manufactured to very strict tolerances, with thick side-link plates and hardened pins. The chains are 38% stronger than other manufacturers’ chains,” says Bobcat. SPECIFICATIONS

HITACHI’S NEW ZW220-G WHEELED LOADER COMBINES FUEL EFFICIENCY, POWER AND ROBUSTNESS IN ONE EASY-TO-MAINTAIN PACKAGE THAT IS A WINNING PROPOSITION FOR ANY EARTHMOVING JOB
A
wheeled loader is one of the definitive models of the world of construction equipment. Versatile, mobile shovels at their very basic level, the wheel loader is intended to transfer material from stockpiles to trucks, or transport material around job sites. With the development of design and technology, variations on this basic theme have brought in wheeled loaders of different sizes and for various applications, with wideranging bucket sizes and attachments. Among the latest of these is Hitachi Construction Machinery’s ZW220-G, a wheeled loader in the 17.6-17.8t operational weight category, which sports bucket sizes of 2.6-4.5m3. “New to the Middle East, this new wheeled loader model carries on Hitachi’s tradition of tough, sturdy, reliable and durable machines. This new model combines high productivity with low maintenance costs and its proven efficiency is delivered in an environmentally friendly manner,” says Piet Van Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East. While the ZW220-G is a new Hitachi in the Middle East market, it is by no means a new entrant into the
regional market. The wheeled loader is a rebranded version of the Kawasaki 80Z5 from Kawasaki Construction Machinery (KCM), which was integrated into Hitachi Construction Machinery in 2019. KCM is no stranger to the regional market, having enjoyed a long history in the entire Middle East and Africa and Asia regions since 2010. Hitachi, meanwhile, established its official presence in the UAE in 2011, although it had opened a base in the region much earlier in 2007, and had started supplying its machines for regional projects from 2008 onwards through a network of branches and dealerships spread over the Middle East and North East Africa (MENA) region to provide after sales support. The machines were targeted towards the region’s earthmoving, construction, mining and quarrying sectors. The machine of the moment, though, is the Hitachi ZW220-G, a workhorse wheeled loader that boasts sturdy performance off a simple design. The model’s simplicity in design not only offers high reliability and durability but also makes maintenance straight forward, reducing downtime even in the harsh conditions of the Middle East. Aiding the overall easy maintenance and servicing is the ZW220-G’s engine hood that opens wide for easy access.

BRIGHT FUTURE
HAVING RECENTLY DELIVERED MACHINES TO IMPORTANT GCC SITES SUCH AS THE MBR SOLAR PARK AND ETIHAD RAIL PROJECTS, CHINESE BRAND SUNWARD IS LEVERAGING ITS QUALITY, TECHNOLOGY, RANGE AND PARTNERSHIPS FOR WIDER PENETRATION INTO THE REGIONAL EARTHMOVING MARKET
A
s a relatively newer name on the Middle East’s equipment landscape, Sunward has made huge strides lately. The Chinese manufacturer landed some prime deals recently, first when a major UAE construction company took delivery of a batch of wheeled excavators, and also when it signed contracts to supply equipment for the construction of the Section D of the UAE’s Etihad Railway project in Fujairah.
It’s main claim to fame, though, is the recent supply of heavy machinery to Dubai’s Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (MBR) Solar Park project, the largest of its kind in the world, where Sunward rotary drilling rigs and mid-size excavators are engaged in the path-breaking energy project. Recounting Sunward’s journey, Bob Xie, managing director, Sunward Middle East Division, says: “Sunward intelligent Equipment Co. Ltd. was founded in 1999, led by He Qinghua, a professor at China’s Central South
University. It became a listed company in 2006 and is today ranked among the top-50 global construction machinery manufacturers worldwide and in the top 20 global excavator brands. Today, Sunward has a presence in more than 100 countries, and has become a reputed brand in North America, Europe, Oceania, Asia and the CIS region. *With Sunward’s high quality, we have cemented our position in the European market since 2003, with our ‘5S Centre’ (Sales, Service, Spare parts, Survey, Study) in Belgium.
11 Sunward has recently supplied six rotary drilling rigs and two mid-sized excavators to the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in the UAE.
“We have made some technological improvements to resist tough environments. These include extra-large coolant tanks and fans in the engines and hydraulic systems, highquality filters and resistive paints, which allow our equipment to be used in the 50°-plus desert heat in the Middle East” Today, 20% of the European mini excavator and skid-steer loader market is taken by Sunward, with our European inventory at more than 12,000 units and counting.” The Middle East is important too in Sunward’s global footprint and Xie adds: “Sunward now has official dealers in the UAE and Kuwait, and distribution partners in Iraq and in Jordan. We are also in talks with two potential dealers in Saudi Arabia and two others in Qatar. In the wider Middle East, we have dealers in Egypt, Iran and Turkey.
“Sunward always looks to cooperate with the best local enterprises – for example, in the UAE our partner is CMC, an established and prestigious name. We support our dealers in all aspects, whether providing spare parts for efficient supply or regular service and operation training. Our rise in the region as a first-class brand owes a lot to our choice of dealers around the territory. “When it comes to CMC, it took Sunward a reasonable time to choose them as a partner. CMC is a well-established company in the
UAE and has been operating in this market for over 47 years. The opportunity for us to work together came when CMC decided to expand its offerings and Sunward found that we fulfil our mutual requirements. “With the cooperation of CMC we managed to make a breakthrough deal with a major UAE construction company, successfully selling them wheeled excavators with which they are so satisfied that we are in negotiation for more units. Also, some contracts have been signed in the Etihad railways project’s

section D in Fujairah and Sunward equipment is ready to join the work.” Sunward offers a complete range of earthmoving equipment, both compact and big, from the large diggers and foundation rigs to the smaller skid-steers and telehandlers, and even crawler cranes and access equipment. The company also recently won a bid to supply rotary drilling rigs for Kuwait’s South Mutlaa housing project, to be delivered shortly. “Sunward is a technology driven manufacturer since its foundation. We are the first in the world to research the hydraulic hybrid excavator consuming 30% less fuel with its energy accumulator integrated in the hydraulic system. In 2019, Sunward displayed unmanned excavators controlled in real time through 5G by operators sitting in simulated cabs far
away from the units. We’ve recently completed research on a fully electric 50t excavator and demonstrated it at a customer job-site. Sunward’s product line in the Middle East includes excavators, foundation engineering drilling rigs, rock drilling rigs, skid-steer loaders, telehandlers and also crawler cranes and aerial work platforms. “We are among the top 20

excavator makers in the world, with 60 products being exported to more than 100 countries,” Xie says. “We have four categories of excavators based on working weight: minis from 1-3.8t, small from 6--14.8t, medium from 14.8-22.6t and the large excavators from 36.2-90.5t. The medium and large models, like the 21t ,36t and 50t, are the most popular for us in the Middle East in earthmoving, quarrying and mining applications. “In the skid-steers, our models go all the way up to 3.6t, with the most popular being the SWL2820, a 750kg capacity model with 20% more powerful than comparable models in the Middle East. The machine is solid and durable, with a high resell value. One of the oldest SWL2820 models, sold in 2008, is still going strong at our Saudi customer’s site.” Given that Sunward customises its products for challenging harsh environments like in the Middle East, this durability is no surprise. Xie explains: “We have made some technological improvements to resist tough environments, including extralarge coolant tanks and fans in the engines and hydraulic systems, highquality filters and resistive paints, which allow our equipment to be used in the 50°-plus desert heat in the Middle East and North Africa. This is followed up with high-level maintenance, resulting in Sunward’s excavators, foundation rotary drill rigs and steer-skid loaders being used in this region for over a decade now without any issue.” Sunward also pays special attention to the operator environment. “Our skid-steer loaders have wide and comfortable cabs with good
13 vision, easy ingress and egress, and ergonomic placement of all controls and switches. They have FOPS/ROPS standard cab structures and threelevel electric starting protection system. Daily maintenance points are all very easy to reach and a standard quick coupler makes it fast and easy to switch attachments.” Other features that help operator efficiency are the double accelerator controls, with hand accelerator for constant power and pedal accelerator for bucket loading. In the excavators, the cabs are high-strength, anti-rolling FOPS and ROPS tested, while seats are six-way adjustable for comfort. A fully automatic air conditioner cools based on ambient temperatures and has multiple large diameter vents for more effective cooling. An automatic engine startup/ shutdown protection system reduces abrasion and prolongs engine service life. A seven-inch high-definition LCD colour display has an easy interface to display all necessary information and

is highly visible in any light condition. “Coming to electronic aids, a monitoring function keeps a tab on such items as fuel level, coolant temperature and blocking of air filter, while at the end of maintenance intervals, the display reminds operators and shows the replacement time of oil, fuel and air filter elements respectively. The display also stores all types of
historical fault data, which operators can search at any time for easier troubleshooting,” explains Xie. “Maintenance and service are further improved by the long-life oil filter whose high-performance materials extend the replacement interval of both the oil and filter element. A fuel prefilter removes both water and impurities from the fuel, providing excellent adaptability for various grades of fuel.” Xie adds that of particular relevance to the Middle East conditions, a twostage air filtration system is effective in preventing entry of dust, with a Radial Seal large-capacity air filter adopted for the second stage, providing higher filter efficiency and facilitating cleaning and replacement of the filter element. The fuel and oil filters are placed close to each other for easier and maintenance. A capacious main pump chamber and simple pipeline layout also facilitate maintenance and operation, while the turbo charger is provided with an antiscald protection cover.

or a tyre manufacturer that started production only in 2006, Magna Tyres has indeed come a long way and left its indelible tread marks on construction, mining and other off-road sites globally. The Dutch manufacturer of Off-the Road (OTR) tyres has, in a short span of time, become one of the most prominent names in the industrial and heavyduty tyres space. In the earthmoving segment, Magna manufactures all fast-moving sizes for wheel loaders, dozers, rigid and articulated dump trucks of various wheel sizes. Speaking to CMME, Vijay Nambiar, general manager for the Middle East, Africa and
Indian subcontinent at Magna Tyres says: “Cut resistant and heat resistant products are available to suit all operational requirements with the highest tonne-kilometres per hour (TKPH). Magna Group has a wide range in tyre sizes, starting from 25 inches to 57 inches, suitable for the earthmoving category. In addition to our Radial options, some Bias variants are also obtainable for price-conscious customers.” Over the last few years, Magna has reported good growth around the globe and saw many additions to its worldwide footprint last year. Nambiar informs that among the milestones that the company has marked recently is the move in March to its new head-office
in Waalwijk, The Netherlands, with a huge warehouse facility of 58,000sqm. “Due to the Magna Tyres Group’s continuous growth and our rapidly increasing brand presence in the global tyre industry in recent decades, the current office including the warehouse was no longer sufficient to serve the worldwide customer base with the top-class service they require. The move to the new premises will ensure fast delivery, stock availability and service via a global network. Magna Group has also expanded its production line in The Netherlands and Thailand factories, apart from launching a new pattern of 20.5R25 M-Terrain tyres. The introduction of a 3-star
15 rated RDT tyre in size 24.00R35 was the first of its kind in the industry,” Nambiar says. Pointing out Magna’s most popular or flagship earthmoving tyre in the Middle East, he says it is the 27.00R49, which is available in MA04, MA04+ and M Rigid patterns. “This is the most sought-after size in Magna’s earthmoving segment. Our 27.00R49 tyre has been validated for high performance in various mine operations in different countries and has given the lowest cost per hour in operations, mainly because of the premium quality at a very competitive price. A bias option is available in the MB440 pattern.” So how does Magna go about developing its high performance and sought-after OTR tyres, especially for demanding regions such as the Middle East? Nambiar says that the company thoroughly studies the whole operation a tyre is intended for, including studies of terrain, load carrying of the equipment, temperatures, routes, cycle times for trips and several other factors. “After analysing all the collected data in specific operations, we arrive at the TKPH, which is technically the working capacity of the tyre. Once we share the details with our production team, they can customise the mix to get the best out of the tyre.” This strategy has proved successful in the GCC, with Magna Tyre acquiring customers in all major segments in the region. “Aggressive mining activities in the Middle East and Africa region, such as Fujairah-based quarries and mines, are a great help for us. Furthermore, there are many ports around the region where Magna tyres are used on the port machinery. The list is growing fast, with more names added each year.” Nambiar explains that there are numerous tyres available in the market for the same size, but many factors need to be considered before choosing a tyre. The most important considerations, he says, are that the tyre should be application-specific and costeffective, with performance records in tough operating terrain and weather conditions. “Magna Group has a wide range of tyres available that suit customer demand. These tyres have patterns ranging from MA01, MA02 and MA04+ to M04 and MA07, with M-Terrain being the latest addition. The user has a variety to choose from, examining all the factors that need to be considered. Furthermore, Magna’s experienced technical staff helps the user to select the best product
for his specific operation. Also, we offer custom made products if the volume is large.” Speaking of help from experienced technical staff brings up service and backup. Nambiar says Magna takes this aspect seriously, and adds: “Loyal customers are very important to us, which is why we often offer our customers extra services. We believe it is important for distributors to have the right knowledge of our tyres. So as part of our added value to distributors, strategic partners, end-users and others who are interested and involved in the OTR Tyre industry, Magna Tyres Middle East & Africa regularly organises technical training to enhance knowledge of OTR tyres as well as of the Magna product range. Moreover, we pay regular visits to end-users for on-site support, understand their needs and suggest periodical changes with operational changes.”
Such customer outreach programmes must have slowed down under the impact of Covid-19, but Magna has adapted fast to the situation. “In the last few months, we have taken several measures to deal with the Covid-19 situation and we’re doing everything we can to go on with business as usual. The Middle East operation was flexible and fast to adapt to the situation. We made sure to have virtual and regular contact with all our customers, maintain sufficient stocks and continue with swift delivery to customers. “In the Covid-19 crisis, our new warehouse in The Netherlands has proven to be the best decision we took in recent years, supporting our global operations when most factories were shut. In this fast-changing situation, we are constantly monitoring and talking with customers, leaving no stone unturned to keep communications going smoothly.”
NEW 3-STAR RDT TYRE
STAR OF THE NEXT LEVEL
Magna Tyres recently presented its “Next Level” RDT tyres - its first-ever 3-stars rigid dump truck tyre - which the company says are the result of “years of research and hours of technical analysis”. The 24.00R35 has been added to the Magna MA04+ line-up and will be available in the 3-star version in addition to the already existing 2-star version.
“The potential of this latest release is tremendous, and it will be the first step in the upgraded generation of Magna Group RDT tyres. Since its introduction, the Magna MA04+ has provided many dump trucks worldwide with topclass performances and moved countless loads of raw materials. The proven tread pattern turned out to be a great basis for
the further development of the upgraded MA04+ range,” says Vijay Nambiar. The “Next Level” Magna MA04+ provide customers a stronger tyre, with more rubber in the contact patch, better and additional steel liners, which result in increased load capacity. “It allows mines to increase their productivity and equals an 8% higher payload or an increase of 9t in capacity per dump truck.”

TOOLS OF THE TRADE
EARTHMOVING ATTACHMENTS MAKER AUGER TORQUE PROVIDES SOLUTIONS FOR NUMEROUS APPLICATIONS AND HAS BEEN ABLE TO MAKE A MARK ON THE MIDDLE EAST MARKET WITH ITS GROWING DEALER NETWORK AND QUALITY PRODUCTS
E
ver since it was established in 1998, Auger Torque has been setting new standards in the earthmoving attachment market. The company first started supplying to the Middle East in 2010, but it was 2016 and 2017 when it saw real growth, with the introduction of local stock from Jebel Ali, a growing dealer network and a business development manager based in Dubai. Before that, in 2015, Auger Torque became part of the Kinshofer Group adding the group’s range of products to its portfolio. In 2020, with two Queens Awards and ISO 9001 accreditation, Auger Torque continues to collaborate with industry partners to develop, manufacture and bring to market innovative earthmoving products. With manufacturing bases worldwide, the striking blue and yellow attachments can be seen across all seven continents and in over 70 countries.
“With customers across all of the Middle East, Auger Torque provide solutions in numerous applications, including dewatering, predrilling for sheet piling, micro piling, deep trenching in hard rock, solar panel foundations and fencing. With a growing dealer network, we are well placed to support the ongoing demands of the Middle East market,” says Rohan Saldanha, head of EMEA operations, Auger Torque. “The opportunities in the Middle East were always clear but it wasn’t until a solid infrastructure was put in place in 2016 with stock in Jebel Ali, a dedicated person to develop business locally and a growing dealer network, that these opportunities could be exploited. Today, we are closer to customers, understand the challenges they face and provide suitable and workable solutions. Working closely with R&D, we develop new fit-for-purpose products or adapt existing ones to meet customer challenges.”
Having product and people on the ground increases consumer confidence, he adds. Having locally available spare parts for service and maintenance, makes Auger Torque the viable option for earthmoving applications in the region. “Earth drills and drilling augers are our most sought-after products, but since ground conditions are not homogeneous, trying to find one solution that fits all is a challenge. A typical request may be for an auger that can drill through dense limestone, with a high-quality drive that provides adequate torque and speed. Trenching through tough conditions has also been a recent challenge. In Qatar we provided drum cutters, that can cut 1.2m wide and 8.5m deep. Static pulverisers and shears are another product line where we have seen requirements. Auger Torque can supply them all,” Saldanha says. Customers in the Middle East are looking for innovative technologies that can cope
17 with the demands of a changing market, he adds and versatility and productivity are key; with labour costs rising and budgets falling, customers need more from their equipment. “Listening to the needs of the customer, shorter R&D cycles, coupled with national and regional sourcing, enables us to bring tailor made products to market. We have dewatering and hard rock augers custom built to meet the needs of the customer, earth drills that best suit customers’ machines, and heavy duty trenching attachments that not only provide power and effective trenching, but withstand the tough arid and saline conditions - all from one specialist supplier. “Today, the most popular products are earth drills, hard rock augers and drum cutters. An earth drill is a hydraulic motor, that when connected to the hydraulics of
any parent machine can be used with an auger to drill holes into varying strata. Micro piling or drilling often takes place in restricted access areas, with the ability to drill holes with varying diameters and depths. Requiring a standard excavator has made this our most popular attachment,” adds Saldanha. The company’s drum cutters have also generated great interest, with demand centred around the fact that trenching needs to be done at varying depths and in hard ground conditions. “This product is proving popular as customers demand quality, strength and speed to get the job done. Additionally, the same drum cutter can be used for demolition work, so it’s a multi-use attachment.” Spare parts for all Auger Torque attachments are maintained in Jebel Ali and
dealers also maintain their own parts. The gear oil used is standard hydraulic oil which can be locally procured, and the company urges customers to change it at regular intervals. Dealers play a key role, with follow up servicing of the units with their customers. With the constraints of the Covid-19 situation, after an initial period of readjustment, Auger Torque’s fabrication and distribution capabilities were largely unaffected, thanks to a global spread of resources. “So, where one region may have been experiencing issues, other regions could step in. We have been very fortunate to see increased sales globally, being able to deliver where other suppliers potentially have not. The Auger Torque values are: ‘Be Open, Be Global, Be Nimble’ – and during Covid19 we are making sure we live up to them.”

INTERVIEW E ARTH MOVING REP ORT 2020
GETTING A GRIP
RAJIV PODDAR, JOINT MANAGING DIRECTOR OF BKT TYRES, TELLS CMME ABOUT THE OFF-THE-ROAD TYRE SPECIALIST’S LATEST ACTIVITIES AND PRODUCTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND ON THE GLOBAL STAGE How has BKT been impacted by Covid-19 and how have you responded? As a manufacturer these are challenging times because of Covid-19. We are taking all possible precautions and factoring in the new normal, with more restrictions in terms of how we can work. On our factory floor, we are following all new government mandated guidelines, and so there are restrictions on movement of people due to social distancing requirements. While we had to change the way work was done, which has of course caused disruptions, this is inevitable and has to be factored in into the way we work now. And then there is the market, which remains unstable globally, in almost any geography you care to look into. Not only is there uncertainty about the pandemic itself, there is also instability in the way people are spending their money or executing projects. So, the pandemic has affected
the way people think about and use both their CAPEX and OPEX. In some countries you have governments that are proactively encouraging the return to normality, with the right precautions, such as in the UAE, which is encouraging and positive for businesses. But there are other places where this is not so and confidence is lower. We believe the market will stabilise. But the most important question now is when that will happen. We’re hopeful that if the present conditions sustain, then the market will be better by the end of this year or the first quarter of the next. But the middle of next year is when BKT expects a return to levels more approaching normal. Even during the pandemic we still have to maintain communications with our dealers and customers in terms of supplying them what they need, or imparting the necessary training. We’ve gone virtual in a big way with interactions and advising of dealers. And our
trainings have been moved online wherever possible, as this is the only way we can train our dealers and downstream people right now. For example, we recently did an entire day’s virtual training for our dealers and customers in the Middle East. How was your performance in the region before the pandemic and what were the sectors doing well? A few months prior to the onset of Covid-19, the markets were buoyant for us in the Middle East. Mining and construction both seemed to be on the up and our tyre sales to both segments were rising. We work through distributors and in the Middle East we have them in Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which is our biggest market in the region followed by the UAE. Industrial and construction tyres are the fastest moving for us in the Middle East. Mining has been picking up of late and
19 was performing well before the pandemic hit. So we expect it to be among the fast gainers again when the situation gets better, although at low overall volumes. We are gaining market share in the Middle East and our products are being accepted in the region. What are the reasons behind your increasing market share in the Middle East? The reasons are our products themselves, which are their own proof. We don’t need to go out and tell people that our products are good. With their performance in the market they have proved their quality more than amply and for all to see. I personally believe that seeing is believing. We also cover an extensive range in terms of machines and sizes even in our radial products. Towards the end of this year we will
be launching our 57-inch radials. And as our range gets completed and the product proves itself in various tough conditions globally, the OEMS are also accepting our products, which is another. feather in our cap. Tyre telematics has grown globally of late. What is BKT doing in this regard? BKT has developed SPOTECH, an innovative device able to provide exact information on the equipment position traced by satellite. It can be programmed and tailored to the application site volumes and type of equipment in use. The objective is a kinematic motion analysis. The system comprises a triaxial accelerometer positioned on the equipment in order to record latitudinal, longitudinal, and vertical movements as well as the forces involved in addition to speed,
“As our range gets completed and the product proves itself in various tough conditions globally, the OEMS are also accepting our products”
cycle duration and other useful parameters for increasing the customer’s job efficiency in the earthmoving and port sectors. The information obtained enables study of tyre usage according to its effects and impacts on the piece of equipment it is fitted on. In the field of OTR, for which this device is originally designed, equipment generally performs repeated cycles. This enables to assess the TKPH value, i.e. a dumper’s strength by analysing the weight that is transported on average and the distance in kilometers per hour. Basically, a higher TKPH index means a tyre is not suitable for the application in use, whereas it is perfect if the result is lower. BKT experts can assist users by offering suggestions in order to correctly interpret the data and to intervene, where necessary, with corrective actions on the tyres.

KOBELCO 90TH ANNIVERSARY
TESTAMENT TO LONGEVITY The year 2020 may have presented some unprecedented global challenges, but for Kobelco Construction Machinery it is a year of celebration, marking 90 years since it created Japan’s first electric mining shovel in 1930, an innovation that would have a significant impact on both the business and the global construction industry. Delving into timelines, Murat Derinbay says: “Back in 1930 we produced electric mining shovels. In 1956 we launched diesel powered mechanical ‘shovels’ for construction. In 1962, we developed and introduced hydraulic crawler excavators. “In the 1980s we developed crawler demolition machines and car dismantling machines, and launched the renowned SK models of crawler
and immediately made their mark. They are equipped with our Komexs/Geoscan system, a highly developed remote monitoring system enabling end users and dealers to get detailed machine working reports. It also supports dealers and Kobelco service teams for remote programming and troubleshooting, “Kobelco also customises its models for the Middle East environment. For example, our SR mini excavators are fitted with Kobelco-designed and patented iNDr technology which provides superior noise and dust reduction and improved cooling for better operation in GCC conditions.” This attention to market demands has meant that Kobelco excavators have featured in several important projects around the GCC and are part of the fleets of some top names in the rental sphere. Key mentions are the corniche, highway and infrastructure
excavators. In the 1990s Kobelco was already recognising the im-portance of the environment and we launched the Acera (Cityscape) version of our SK excavators and also introduced the ‘Kobelco green’ colour to the whole range. This colour is now synonymous with Kobelco. “In 1996 we launched the original SR design of mini excavators while in 2006 we launched the Dash-8 series of crawler excavators with emphasis on lowering fuel consumption by 20% and increasing productivity by 8% over previous models. 2012 saw the launch of our Hybrid excavators and in 2018 we launched the Dash-10 models - the first excavators to utilise an energy recovery system to further lower fuel consumption.
projects in Bahrain, as well as the rental fleets of Abu Dhabi-based U-rent and Qatar’s Qfab. Moving on to the effects of the Covid-19 situation, Derinbay says: “We have seen a contraction of around 40% in the Middle East excavator segment during the past 12 months, exacerbated by Covid-19. As with all manufacturers, Kobelco has had to adjust production volumes and lead times due to the Covid-19 work restrictions. However, we have not reduced our workforce in this time. “Looking forward, I anticipate a guarded recovery in 2021. Of course, that is also dependent on the global market and the way the world and the region combat Covid-19. Kobelco is at the forefront of hydraulic crawler excavator technology and we believe our legacy and quality products will hold their own in the market in future as they are now.”
