CASH MOVERS The earthmoving sector is at the core of construction machinery. When earthmovers are doing well in the market, it’s a sign that the entire equipment and construction landscape as a whole are in rude health. Last year, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when the equipment sector in the region nearly ground to a halt, some items of earthmoving machinery still sold on the market and some players still launched new models. For example, the backhoe loader segment, where almost all manufacturers reported activity last year that was above expectation, and Bobcat even launched its most important BHL model to date. This year, that trend is continuing, and the market is a lot more buoyant. Off-Highway Research has projected that with global governments trying to kick start their economies after the pandemic, infrastructure spending will lead to record sales for machinery. Perhaps this will be the impetus for renewed activity in our region. If the launch of the new JCB 3DX, which we have on the cover, is anything to go by, earthmovers can also expect to move some amount of cash this year.

JCB UNVEILS THE 3DX
THE KING OF BACKHOE LOADERS INTRODUCES ITS NEW 3DX SITEMASTER EXCAVATOR LOADER RANGE TO THE MIDDLE EAST MARKET, CONSOLIDATING ITS DOMINANT POSITION IN THE CATEGORY WITH A MACHINE THAT RAISES THE BAR HIGHER
A
s one of the pioneers of the machine and the undisputed global leader in the segment, JCB is a brand that commands respect in the backhoes loader market. In fact, the brand is so well known for the backhoe loader that it has become synonymous with the machine and in some parts of the world the name JCB is the word for the backhoe in local languages. The Middle East is among the biggest markets in the world for the backhoe loader, with the segment often outselling many other machinery classes combined in any given year. Here too, as in almost all other global territories, JCB rules the roost, having corned well over half the market in terms of market share. The company’s versatile 3CX is the ever-popular choice on the job-sites
of the GCC, along with the other models in JCB’s line-up as and when required. Time and again, JCB has raised the bar higher with its new models and innovations in the backhoe space – and now it is time again when the British behemoth pushes the frontiers of the equipment further with its new launch in the Middle East – the 3DX Sitemaster. According to JCB, it has been manufacturing backhoe loaders for over 70 years now and even after seven decades, the backhoe remains one of the world’s most popular pieces of construction equipment. This is testament to the versatility of the machine, that its popularity has continued to endure. “We are grateful for the trust and confidence our customers have showed in our backhoe loaders since their inception and a key reason for this has been our
ability to continuously improve the product. Following on the legacy of this innovation, we are excited to introduce the new 3DX Sitemaster range of machines to the region,” says Ahmed Shouman, general manager, JCB Middle East. “Our new range of 3DX Sitemaster machines boast a number of brand-new features and improvements with simplified specifications packaged together to have very strong attributes targeting specific customer needs and sectors within the market - i.e. rental, plant hire and the contractor.” According to JCB, there are three new models in the new 3DX range: the 3DX ECO, 3DX PLUS and 3DX PRO. The 3DX ECO features a high performing 56kW engine and is the ideal site machine, the 3DX PLUS and 3DX PRO have powerful 68.6kW engines. The 3DX PLUS and 3DX

PRO are offered with a multi-purpose (6in-1) bucket and hammer lines as standard. The manufacturer adds that the new models have significantly more features, comfort and technology to make them easier than ever to operate and more productive than any other competitor. They have been designed keeping in mind the versatility of the excavator loaders (backhoe loader) at heart and no other type of machine has the ability to load, dig, backfill, grade, grab, break, excavate and travel between sites quickly, allowing the excavator loader operator to be a ‘master of the site’, which is a massive advantage over other machines and saves customers time and money. “No matter what type of application, job-site condition or business need of a customer, the new 3DX Sitemaster range offers the ideal solution,” says Shouman.

WINNING ON VERSATILITY
WITH MANUFACTURERS CONSTANTLY IMPROVING THEIR MODELS AND OFFERINGS, THE BACKHOE LOADER CONTINUES ITS HOLD ON THE REGION’S EQUIPMENT MARKET AS PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT SINGLE PIECE OF MACHINERY WITH ITS DO-IT-ALL CAPABILITIES
C
ome good times or bad, the backhoe loader just cannot be kept down. We saw this last year at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when not only did the backhoe loader (BHL) market buck the trend, but new models were launched as well. And this year, as the overall equipment market shows signs of coming back – a recent report by Off-Highway Research projected record global machinery sales in 2021 - the BHL has easily retained its preeminent position as the most important and best-selling segment of machinery in the region. Moreover, the market leader, JCB, has even assessed the present time as the best to launch its new 3DX Sitemaster model to the region, as our cover story of this report highlights in the previous pages. The other stalwarts of the BHL category are also optimistic about the BHL and when we asked the likes of Cat, Case, Bobcat and Mecalac about their models and what their plans are, most sounded surprisingly upbeat about the category. At global equipment leader Caterpillar, the most recent Cat BHL models, the 426F2 and 428, are proving to be the brand’s most popular ones in the region.
A spokesperson for the company says: “The Cat 426F2 is among our most popular models. Designed with an improved customer experience in mind, the machine is built to exceed customer expectations with strong performance, enhanced operator experience and simplified maintenance with extended service intervals.” The 426F2 has a powerful 66kW engine and mechanical hydraulic control digging arm can dig down to a maximum digging depth of 4119mm. The 428’s 64kW engine is mated to a standard power shuttle transmission and has the option of a powershift transmission and auto shirt transmission with lock-up torque differential. The three systems offer tops speeds of 37kph, 40kph and 40kph in forward and 37kph, 27kph and 27kph in reverse, respectively. The 426F@, meanwhile, offers a standard powershift transmission only. Caterpillar says its backhoe loaders provide “superior digging, trenching, back-filling and material handling capabilities” and can be used for many applications, “including but not limited to general construction, demolitions and excavations, landscaping, breaking asphalt and paving. “Cat backhoes deliver the power and precise handling you need when

operating in areas where using larger equipment is not practical,” says the manufacturer. Increasing the versatility of the Cat BHLs is the wide range of Caterpillar attachments, which provide a tool for every trade. According to Cat, attachments “tailor our machines to the specific requirements of a customer’s working needs”. “Caterpillar attachments enhance the productivity and utility of Caterpillar machines, equipping them for a wide range of tasks and operating requirements, and providing total system solutions for any job application,” adds the company. Some of the most important and heavily used tools in the 47-atachment Cat line-up are augers, bale grabs, brooms, brushcutters, cold planners, compactors, forks, hammers, grapples, pulverisers, rotors, saws and rippers – apart of course from various sizes and varieties of buckets for digging and loading. All of these make the BHL a truly do-it-all machine, with its versatility making it the “one-machine fleet”, according to Cat. Meanwhile, at Bobcat - another manufacturer with a long lineup of attachments, and one that swears by the tool-carrier concept - last year saw a revamping of its BHL offering with the introduction of the brand-new B730. The new generation R-Series B730 replaces the company’s first generation B700, B730 and B750 models in the Middle East and Africa. Available in a choice of configurations for diverse applications, Bobcat says the new R-Series B730 is ideal for construction, utility, rental, roadworks, demolition, excavation, waste, recycling, landscaping, agriculture and many other sectors and industries. Gaby Rhayem, regional director, Middle East and Africa at Doosan Bobcat EMEA, says: “This new B730 is the new generation of Bobcat BHLs. The hydraulics are totally different and upgraded; it’s a new machine with a new gearbox and

mechanical one, you can also go from mechanical to hydraulic controls to Bobcat’s ‘pilot’ controls. The cab also can be had without AC or heating or with a full HVAC system. Options on the bucket include a general-purpose (GP) to a six-in-one bucket. Another great feature available on this New Generation R-Series B730 is the ride control chassis, where the whole machine will be on the ride control feature for extra stability. And there are many more options and features. It also is a class leader on engine power, which is a high 100hp.” Over at Case Construction Equipment, product specialist Zane Barnard says the Case model range comprises the entry level 570T and ST, and then the 580T and ST all the way through to the top-of-the-range 695ST, which comes feature-loaded with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering and all other options. While the two 570 variants are made in India, the other models are made in Italy. “Our sales in the Middle East are of course led by the 570 models. Both are doing very well. The 570T and ST are the latest additions to Case’s BHL range. They are designed to win over customers looking for productivity, versatility and fast return on investment, with many features to attract fleet owners and
7 operators. We spotted a need in this market for a machine answering to a particular description. The feedback from our customers was that they wanted what was not really a budget machine but one that was more competitively priced, robust, easy to use and productive – and up to made-in-Europe in quality standards. We knew that our 570T and 570ST answered that description. The numbers tell the story. We’ve been selling them in India for a while and they are extremely popular in that country.” explains Barnard. The 570 got quick success in the Middle East, and Barnard adds: “Customers really like the machine, and the sales figures speak for that more eloquently than any testimonial could. But I can tell you that our customers have told us the machine is really reliable. The rental market especially has taken to it in a big way due to several fleet-friendly factors, such as low operating costs and ease of maintenance and repair.
Represented by CMC in the UAE, Mecalac BHLs such as the fourwheel-drive 990 and the general purpose 870, carry the quality legacy of the Terex brand.
We have sold many units to rental firms of all sizes, from the small two-to-three-machine outfits to the really big names.” At Construction Machinery Centre (CMC), the local dealer for Mecalac, Iyad Ahmed Amali, GM, says: “We’ve been representing the Mecalac BHLs for around seven years now. Of course, they were
earlier under the Terex brand and only became Mecalac after Terex sold its compact equipment division in the UK to Mecalac. “The machines have great track records and market approval in their Terex guise for a long time now. Those who have used the Mecalac BHLs - or the erstwhile Terex machines - keep coming back to us. In fact, if anything, Mecalac has further refined and improved the product in terms of quality, features and technology.” The Mecalac range comprises four models, the main ones being the 870 and the top-of-the-range, fourwheel drive 990. “The 990 is a very capable and advanced machine and a showcase of what Mecalac BHLs can do. If your work is in the sand, then you’ll need a strong, go-anywhere machine such as the 990. The 870 is more a ‘general purpose’ model for urban landscapes, general maintenance and construction,” Amali says.

W
ith the wheeled loader being central to construction, mining, quarrying and all other allied functions, almost every major manufacturer offers a range of this pillar of the construction equipment industry. We take a look at four major manufacturers here and discuss their latest offerings. Equipment giant Komatsu has two new wheeled loader (WL) models on the block. Komatsu WLs are among the most popular in the Middle East market and the company has recently upped its game with the launch of the WA470-6R and WA480-6R models in the region. Both boast high productivity and low fuel consumption, according to Komatsu, and have a high-performance Komatsu SAA6D125E-5 engine with a dual-mode power select system and large-capacity torque converter. The transmission is automatic with shift timing select system and a lock-up torque converter is optional. A variable displacement piston pump and closed-centre load sensing system (CLSS) are also among the features. Both models also have excellent operator environments, with an electronic transmission lever, tilt and telescopic steering column, fingertip controls, lownoise cabs, easy entry and exit with a rear-
hinged door and a pillarless, large ROPS/ FOPS integrated cab. Komatsu has also increased reliability with its own designed and manufactured components, a sturdy main frame, maintenance-free, fully hydraulic wet disc service and parking brakes, hydraulic hoses with flat face O-ring seals, primer paint application via a cation electrodeposition process, powder coating for application of main structure paint and sealed connectors for electrics. According to a Komatsu spokesperson, the most beneficial features for customers are low maintenance and low fuel consumption. “An Equipment Management Monitoring system makes maintenance easier while gull-wing type engine doors give easy access and reach to maintenance points. An optional automatic reversible fan eases cleaning. Fuel consumption is also reduced because of the high-torque engine and the large-capacity torque converter with maximum efficiency in the low-speed range,” he adds. “The large-capacity torque converter is a feature of the Komatsu-designed drive train for optimal efficiency. The machines have plenty of acceleration without the need for full throttle and can achieve high travel speeds, even on grades or steep ramps leading to feed hoppers. This significantly assists productivity and load-and-carry operations.” While the WA470-6R puts out 273hp at

2000rpm and has a bucket capacity of 3.6–5.2m3, the more powerful WA4806R has an output of 300hp at 2000rpm and bucket capacity of 3.8–6.1m3. Meanwhile, JCB’s WLs have also seen steady growth. Ahmed Shouman, general manager, JCB Middle East, explains that JCB is on track with its five-year WL growth plan: “JCB has interesting product launches and upgrades planned in the coming years. We’ve witnessed strong demand for WLs in the Middle East in the first half of 2021. This was expected because after the worst of the pandemic, governments plan to expand infrastructure development, especially in KSA, Egypt and Qatar.” JCB’s WL line-up in the region has three categories - 22-25t, 17-19t and 13-15t. “We offer the 467ZX, 455ZX, 426 and 436 to cover these categories, the first two predominantly supplied with the z-bar loader configuration. The 426 and 436 have a choice of both Z-bar and High Torque (for parallel lift/ tool carriers) configurations, popular for pipe handling applications in oil & gas segments. We also have the 422ZX and 432ZX in the 9-13t category, focused on construction and utility applications.” JCB is also launching two new models, the 403 and 406, with operating weights of 2.5t and 5t
respectively, Shouman reveals. Both feature parallel lift arms and can be optionally supplied with either a bucket or forks from the factory. Both also feature ROPS/ FOPS certified cabs as standard and a choice of standard and LSD axles. “JCB’s best-selling WL continues to be the 455ZX. Customers love its performance, simplicity, durability and

lower total cost of ownership. We will also be launching an upgraded version of the 432ZX - the 432ZX PLUS - later this year, with better fuel efficiency, 11% more productivity and a modified loader arm for higher reach and breakout force, along with grouped greasing points and ground level service accessibility. The standard bucket size is 2.7m3 with an optional 3.4m3 bucket for low density materials.” At Hitachi, the ZW220-G is a workhorse for harsh conditions. The model is a rebranded version of the KCM 80Z5 model from Kawasaki Construction Machinery (KCM), following the final merger of KCM and Hitachi Construction Machinery in 2019. The ZW220-G has a bucket capacity of 2.6–4.5m3 and operating weight of 17.6-17.8t. Its Japanese-made HINO J08C-TI diesel engine does not require any special diagnostic equipment or computer for service. Compared with electronic controlled, high-pressure fuel injection systems, a wide range of fuel and engine oils can be used. The operator’s cab is fully certified to meet all rollover protective structure (ROPS) and falling object protective structure (FOPS) regulations. Viscous cab mounts reduce vibration and noise. A fully adjustable suspension seat, tilt and telescopic steering and an easy-toread monitor and gauge enhance operator comfort and productivity. Piet Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East Corporation, says: “The ZW220-G has a basic design that eliminates excessive functions to enhance productivity, durability and reliability in harsh conditions. This also simplifies maintenance and reduces downtime, thus lowering operating costs. The engine access panels can be opened wide for better access, filters are conveniently located for easy change and grease fittings are grouped to reduce maintenance time and insure proper lubrication. “WLs that work in harsh conditions are subjected to dust, heat and shock constantly, which requires
11
them to be extremely reliable. Easy maintenance and simplified servicing are the key features of the ZW220-G, which gives it the durability and dependability necessary for any unforgiving jobsite condition.” Over at Caterpillar, the popular models in the region include the 950 GC, 950L, 962L, 966L, and 980L. According to Cat dealer Al-Bahar, most customers opting for Cat WLs do so as they are one-stop machines, easy to own and operate all day long. According to the dealer, Cat WLs make varying kinds of loading jobs safer, faster, more precise and profitable, reducing cost and fuel consumption. Samer Ismail, Earthmoving and Excavation product manager, Al-Bahar, explains: “Cat WLs come in various sizes from compact to large, each one fully tried and tested to deliver maximum output and productivity.” Ismail adds that Cat WLs are built around a “One machine, many jobs” concept and are designed for reliable performance and long-term durability in a wide range of applications, as well as for various tasks in governmental applications that require a capable, versatile machine that fits the budget. “They are purpose built to handle diverse jobs, from material handling, mining, carrying and truck loading to general construction. Power, efficiency, productivity and easy serviceability are key reasons Cat WLS are successes among owners and operators alike in our region. Staying ahead of the competition, Caterpillar offers a wide variety of cutting-edge technologies and components

specifically built to save time and reduce fuel costs.” Ismail reveals that the most popular Cat WL model in the region is the 950 GC. “We currently also have an ongoing promotion on it. Buyers can avail a Customer Value Agreement (CVA) on the 950 GC, including parts and service for two years/4,000 hours, and Equipment Protection
Plan (EPP) for two years/4,000 hours at no additional cost on purchase of a new Cat 950 GC.” Al-Bahar is also introducing the new Cat 966 GC to the region. Describing the machine, Ismail says: “It offers low fuel consumption with an on-demand fan, load-sensing hydraulics, intuitive controls and performance series buckets. “Great machine performance combined with low owning and operating costs makes the 966 GC the right choice for any business. Features such as the Engine Idle Management System (EIMS), Auto Engine Idle Shutdown (EIS), variable speed fan and load sensing hydraulics result in the low fuel consumption. Intuitive controls and excellent visibility provide a comfortable working environment for efficient all-day operation. Grouped service points and sight gauges allow for easy daily maintenance.”
DURABLE, EFFICIENT AND PRODUCTIVE
SDLG’S BIGGEST WHEEL LOADER SDLG’s biggest wheel loader to date, the L975F, is a 24.9t, Stage III machine developed with a focus on durability, fuel efficiency and improving productivity on job-sites, says the Volvo-owned Chinese manufacturer. Debuted last year, the L975F can be used for a range of tough applications on construction sites, as well in quarries, mines and port terminals, the manufacturer added. Henrik Sjöstrand, SDLG product manager, says: “We understand customers’ demand for equipment that is going to maximise the output of any job, no matter how demanding. We listened and our biggest wheel loader is our most durable yet,
with no compromise on fuel efficiency or safety.” The L975F is designed with robust rear and front frames to withstand load distribution. Equipped with a large tonnage driving axle and reliable braking, the model has a 199kW engine and its transmission uses a HTE205C fixedaxis electro-hydraulic automatic shifting gearbox for flexibility and ease of
operation – SDLG’s first machine to use a fully automatic transmission built by Volvo. An integrated cooling system uses intelligent technology to automatically adjust fan speed according to engine temperature, advantageous in hot climates. The standard 4.2m³ bucket with eight boltedon teeth and two wear plates features a spill guard plate to prevent material loss. The maximum dump height, at 3.2m, is supported by a 3.6m boom. The second stage 93 sand filter in the hood of the machine filters over 95% of particles when working in dusty conditions such as mines, to keep the job smooth and efficient.

AUGER TORQUE SUPPLIED EARTH DRILLS AND AUGERS TO REGIONAL CONTRACTOR SAIF BIN DARWISH AT ABU DHABI’S KHALIFA PORT EXPANSION PROJECT TO MAKE MICRO PILING JOBS POSSIBLE IN A COST-EFFECTIVE AND MODULAR MANNER
A
uger Torque has supplied earth drills and augers for a piling project in the expansion of Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa Port, where the global attachment major worked with regional contractor Saif Bin Darwish, whose Sany 335 excavators were equipped with the Auger Torque 50000 max Earth Drill, while a 1190mm special Auger was also used in the works. The $1bn expansion project at Abu Dhabi Ports’ flagship Khalifa Port began in 2019 and is expected to increase handling volumes by providing deep-water access and enhanced infrastructure. Part of the project entailed the drilling of 120 foundation pits, with holes of 1.2m diameter and a depth of 5m. “This is often seen as a simple application; however, the drill points were in close proximity to the seashore, resulting in a jobsite with a very high water table. Therefore,
the water ingress during the drilling process coupled with collapsible ground conditions made it difficult to deploy a standard drilling system,” describes an Auger Torque official. Saif Bin Darwish were aware that undertaking the project “in house” would require investment in a dedicated drilling rig which could result in substantial CAPEX spending, equipment rental cost and a risk of limited internal know-how in executing this application. They therefore approached Auger Torque, who recommended a modular solution, where a hydraulic drill could be fitted onto the excavator to drill the holes, mounted or dismounted with minimal time loss. Auger Torque proposed its 50000 Max Earth Drill to be fitted on the Sany 335 excavator, wherein the torque generated by the drive would enable drilling the 1.2m Ø to the depth of 5m. It was critical to ensure that not only did the system work but also
the drive unit was able to drive the casing in, drill the holes and be robust enough to carry the weight of the auger and the spoil-debris. Auger Torque’s engineering department conducted a Finite Element Analysis to ensure the shaft of the drive unit would be able to take the tensile load of the casing and auger with the spoil at 5m depth. To overcome any issues of the hole collapsing during the drilling process, a 1200mm diameter casing was supplied with a 1190mm special auger. Test information was submitted and a JSA (job safety advise) and method statement were completed and submitted, resulting in the system being approved to meet all criteria. The 1200mm casing with auger was positioned at the drill point and was driven into the ground. Once set in the ground, the casing top adaptor plate was unlocked, and the auger was inserted in and the isolated soil inside the hole was drilled out.

AUGER TORQUE LAUNCHES 100K MAX EARTH DRILL Auger Torque has expanded its earth drill range with the launch of the new 100,000 Max Earth Drill model, which is designed to work with excavator models of between 21t and 50t. Auger Torque said it released the new model in response to market demand for an earth drill model in the 100K Max’s specific category. The new model provides an impressive 100,000Nm of torque at 15rpm and is geared for high torque applications, “including, but not
limited to, screw pile/anchor installation, large diameter drilling and core barrelling”, said the manufacturer. Giving details on a field application of the new model, Auger Torque added that in December last year, it partnered with Keller Limited to install 104 helical piles at Southend Hospital in southeast England, UK, to support a new threestorey ward to assist with the Covid-19 crisis. Installation
was carried out using a 22t excavator and the 100K Max torque head attachment allowed Keller to install the piles with high torque capacities to depths of 6-10m in the sitespecific ground conditions. The new attachment model, used with a Cat excavator, sped up work on the build, as seen in the picture above,
and proved its efficacy on a job-site which falls in the ambit of what it was designed for, said Auger Torque.

SPARE PARTS AND REPAIR SERVICES SPECIALIST BLUMAQ IS A TRUSTED NAME IN THE EARTHMOVING SECTOR FOR AFTERSALES EQUIPMENT CARE, AND CONSIDERS THE MIDDLE EAST A KEY STRATEGIC LOCATION FOR ITS GROWTH
A
s robustly as they are built, the life of any piece of construction equipment is so tough that they invariably have to have parts replaced and refitted sooner or later. Filters, bearings, sprockets, undercarriages – all of these and more are subjected to tremendous wear and tear in the course of everyday work at job-sites and need periodic replacement. Now, while manufacturers recommend replacing all parts with original ones from the respective brands, depending only on the OEM for spares may not be the ideal solution for a customer so far as timely availability is concerned. Enter Blumaq – a name that even the OEMs trust when it comes to aftermarket spare parts and services. Blumaq delivers replacement parts and maintenance products for construction and mining equipment. With more than 100,000
part numbers in stock for immediate delivery, Blumaq says it offers customers the best possible service in the replacement parts industry, thanks to a knowledgeable organisation, combined with cutting-edge technology. In the Middle East region, it is represented by a powerful distribution partner in Dahbashi Engineering, which enables it to distribute high-quality spare parts in the territory. According to Blumaq, its partnership with Dahbashi started in 2004. Initially, the agreement was only for the UAE market. However, with the gradual blossoming of the relationship, the partnership was extended to cover the rest of the GCC countries and even India. In the 16 years-running that Blumaq and Dahbashi have been partners, they have achieved a highly tuned operation based on mutual understanding, offering customers in the Middle East a huge range of quality aftermarket parts for earthmoving
machinery from Cat, Komatsu, Volvo, Case and others, as well as for engine brands such as Cummins, Perkins and several other global leaders. An official from Blumaq tells CMME that the company has “established a new technical standard in the spare parts industry that operates as an OEM in terms of quality assurance standards”. “It’s a zero-defects strategy articulated in three main principles: Research, Design and Development; Product inspection; and Supplier quality management. Blumaq has an elaborate after-sales support system on the international scene, with any possible problem, regardless of its location in the world, automatically transferred to Blumaq Technical Centre engineers through the quality system designed by Blumaq to provide fast and accurate solutions to customers.” The purpose of the Blumaq Technical Centre (BTC) is to serve the company and
15 its customers by developing the widest aftermarket parts portfolio on the planet, placing Blumaq as a leader in customer valuation through a constant increase in Blumaq products quality. At the same time, BTC provides direct response with effective technical support when a technical issue arises at a customer’s end. “As a company, we are not specialised in a few products or ranges. On the contrary, Blumaq covers many brands and many different kinds of products, which is really appreciated in the market. Our customers find in Blumaq the answer to all their needs, in the sense that they can find in our stocks from the smallest nut for an old Cat machine
to big undercarriage parts for a new Volvo machine, for example.” Good maintenance of construction equipment will save costly repairs and Blumaq says that it knows “how important it is to keep your machine downtime as short as possible”. Therefore, in some its branches it offer a “Repair and Maintenance” service where expert hands repair the components a machine requires. “Blumaq is a guarantee of quality. We manufacture our own parts, developed under the same quality standards as an OEM brand and we offer the same quality, even improving on some parts. Our extensive network of subsidiaries results
in being able to send our spare parts in record time all over the world. In addition, the advantage of having the BTC, our own technical centre, ensures a pre- and aftersales service unmatched in the industry,” says the Blumaq official. “Despite the pandemic, our sector continues to grow. For Blumaq, quality is a key factor, together with the service delivery and after-sales guarantee. This is what makes our customers choose and recommend us. In the short term, we believe the Middle East region is a key strategic location to continue with our growth, which has been good, despite the Covid-19 situation.”

WITH MANUFACTURERS CONTINUING THEIR CONCENTRATION ON ROBUSTNESS AND QUALITY, THE DEFINITIVE LARGE EARTHMOVER KEEPS ON CARRYING AWAY THE BIG LOADS AT THE REGION’S JOB-SITES
T
he dump truck is the definitive earthmoving machine. It does not dig, drill, load or flatten the earth – it literally moves the earth from one place to another. As such, the dump truck, or hauler, is an essential part of both mining and quarrying as well as construction applications. In the former it transports the mined, quarried or blasted material from the source to the processing area and in the latter, it clears out the sand, debris or earth displaced when preparing the ground for a construction project to begin. Dumpers are of course of two main types – articulated dump trucks (ADT) or rigid haulers. Volvo CE is perhaps the first name that comes to mind in the field of ADTs but a key recent development has been its entry into the rigid hauler market recently with its own Volvobranded units. Volvo says it had markets such as the Middle East in mind for its new rigid hauler range, where it was made available even before the more advanced global markets.
The development of the new fourmodel range has relied heavily on the longstanding rigid hauler expertise of Volvo CE’s subsidiary Terex Trucks, combined with the technological strength of the Volvo Group. The range in the Middle East consists of the 40t R45D, 54t R60D, 65t R70D and the flagship 95t R100E. At Volvo’s last customer outreach event in its base in Eskilstuna, Sweden, it was the R70D and R100E that were on centre stage, with the R100E piloted into the demonstration by none other than company president Melker Jernberg. “The E-Series R100E is a completely new Volvo CE 100t rigid hauler that combines a wealth of market and customer knowledge with proven components, new technologies and a striking new design – all providing a cost-effective and productive solution to fulfil the needs of today’s mining and quarrying customers,” says Jernberg. Based on the existing and wellproven Terex Trucks TR-Series, development of the D-Series R45D, R60D and R70D Volvo rigid haulers followed in-depth engineering
17 Long recognised for its articulated dump trucks, Volvo has expanded its dumper line-up with three rigid haulers based on Terex Trucks’ know-how.

reviews, ensuring the machines met the standards expected from Volvo products in their target markets. Improvements include greater visibility and safety systems, along with Volvo technical support. Volvo’ rigid haulers build on the company’s expertise in the ADT segment, in which it has been one of the pioneers and best-known exponents. Volvo’s reputation in the ADTs has been bolstered in the region with several important projects under its belt over the years. These include the Saudi-Oman Landbridge in the Rub Al Khali desert and the Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai, where Volvo ADT fleets numbering 68 units and 37 units respectively made these projects possible. At Japanese giant Komatsu, the dump truck is an integral part of the company’s product offering. The company says its dump trucks are
divided in terms of frame into the rigid and articulated, while the rigids are further divided into mechanical and electrical power trains. “We have six popular models of rigid dump trucks in the Middle East. These are the HD325-7R with a 36.5t payload, the HD405-7R with a 40t payload, the HD465-7R with a payload of 55t, the 63t HD605-7R,
Cat’s most popular ADT model in the region is the 740, which combines manoeuvrability with the ability to tackle poor conditions and steep inclines.

the 91.7t HD785-7 and the HD15008 offering a payload of 141.7t. In our ADT range we have the HM Series of models with the 41t HM400-3R an important one for the region,” says a Komatsu representative. In terms of market performance in the region, the demand for dump trucks has been stable through the last 2-3 years in the Middle East. Describing Komatsu’s position, he says: “We enjoy a very healthy market share in the region. In dump trucks, productivity, availability or uptime, durability and quality are the main choice drivers for customers and Komatsu excels in all of them. When it comes to dump trucks, the importance of total cost of ownership (TCO) is clearly higher compared to smaller equipment such as wheeled loaders for which a low initial price has a bigger role.” Responding to the Middle East market demands, Komatsu’s latest addition to its dump trucks range in the region is the HD1500-8, a 141.7t-payload model. This is now among Komatsu’s highest payloadcapacity models available in the region and was introduced because a demand for it was spotted over the last few years. The biggest demand for a Komatsu dump truck, however, comes from the smaller sizes such as the rigid HD325 and the ADT HM4003R, with payloads of 36.5t and 41t respectively. Jayyousi says this is because the biggest requirement for dump trucks in the region are from quarries and small-scale mining, and not large-scale mining operations
19 where Komatsu’s HD1500 or even bigger models are the requirement. At Hitachi, the Japanese heavyweight well known for dump trucks, customers get the flexibility of a choice of engines suited to their particular operations in the three rigid dump truck models the company offers in the Middle East. Piet van Bakergem, general manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery Middle East, says: “In the Middle East, we are offering three models: the EH3500AC-3, which has a 180t-class payload capacity; the EH4000AC-3, with a 220t-class payload capacity; and the EH5000AC-3, offering 300t-class payload capacity.” The specifications of the Hitachi dump truck models make it clear that the company has aimed at the highcapacity end of the regional market, which requires the sort of expertise in building some massive and robust machines that Hitachi has acquired and exhibited over several decades. The three Hitachi models in the Middle East all come with a choice of engines, and van Bakergem explains: “Based on customer preference, each of these models can be equipped with either a Cummins or MTU engine, while other aspects, such as truck components and performance, remain the same. In some territories, customers already have a relationship with one of these OEM engine brands. So offering the choice of these engines gives customers the freedom to choose their engine OEM with reference to their market. “All Hitachi’s AC-3 dump trucks are fitted with our unique Drive System Control, consisting of pitch control, slip slide control and side skid control. These unique Hitachi features offer better performance with increased controllability and hence increased operational safety during truck hauling. To increase safety, we developed another system called ‘Aerial Angle’, which consists of Peripheral Vision and Object Detect Assist functions. These functions continuously

check the surroundings and warn the operator if any moving object is detected around the truck, such as a mechanic or any other machine.” Meanwhile, at Caterpillar, the Middle East line-up of heavy trucks is divided into the quarry and construction truck (QCT) and the ADT ranges, each comprising seven models. Samer Ismail, product
manager, Earthmoving & Excavation, at Al-Bahar, the Cat dealer for the GCC excluding Saudi Arabia, details the models as the 770G, 772G, 773E, 773G, 775G, 777E, 777G in the QCT range and the 725, 730, 730EJ, 735, 740EJ, 740GC, 745 in the ADT range. Some of the features and advantages that the Cat ADTs provide are “manoeuvrability, the ability to tackle poor underfoot conditions and steep inclines”, says Ismail. Coming to the Cat QCTs, he adds: “These are ideal for hauling at high speeds, with superior braking systems enhancing safety. They have a wide loading target for fast and efficient loading, and various body and liner options. All in all, Cat QCTs provide some of the lowest costs per ton of material moved.” Ismail reveals that the most popular Cat dump truck models in the region are the 770G and 775G among the QCTs and the 740 in the ADT range. Among Cat’s more recent introductions in the Middle East are the 745 and 740GC in the ADTs and the 777E in the QCT range.
