T&FME’S CONFERENCE: IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE If you’re looking at 2020 and wondering whether you can afford to be optimistic about the year ahead, then you should probably be booking your place at the first-ever Truck and Fleet Middle East conference on 5 December at the Ghaya Grand Hotel. We will be filtering out the key points from the event across the January magazine and www.truckandfleetme.com website, but I don’t think you can ever replicate the white heat of debate as fully you can when you are there in person. Key themes at the event are likely to be safety and efficiency. Debates hopefully you are already having internally but the day-to-day running of a fleet operation doesn’t always let you have an opportunity to really sit back and put yourself in somebody else’s shoes. And that is sure to be one of the main takeaways you will have from the day. Where else can you hear how the RTA are re-shaping their own organisation to meet the demanding targets of being greener that have been set by the government? Or when do you really get the opportunity to hear someone talk about instigating a strategy for change that has made their (and possibly your) job easier? A possible highlight will be hearing from OEMs talking about the challenges of serving fleets like yours and passing on advice for making your fleet renewal plans more cost-effective. And if you don’t think their words are enough, then you can step outside to our showcase of new trucks like the Actros and the award-winning Ford F-Max and see whether you should start buying new for yourself. Ultimately, don’t miss this chance to not only be inspired, but also find ways to manage upwards as well as beyond to your customers in a much more effective way. And if you are planning on coming, don’t hesitate to reach out to me for any information – and please do come armed with all those questions you don’t normally have the time or opportunity to ask. See you at the conference.

ION FORMALLY UNVEILED IN THE UAE / EKAR ENTERS KSA MARKET TRUKKER CONTINUES FUNDING RUN / WESTERN MOTORS AND EDC PARTNER UP
NETWORK ION has drive for sustainable transport BEE’AH, CRESCENT ENTERPRISE INAUGURATE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT COMPANY ION TRANSPORTATION Bee’ah and Crescent Enterprise in a joint venture has launched ION, a UAE-based sustainable transport company, which has set up operations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah. ION will be the first ever green mobility solutions provider of its kind in the region, according to the company. It is committed to pioneering accessible and sustainable transport in MENA and beyond as well as provide smart, effective, carbon-neutral, commercial and public transport solutions, deployed through platforms such as ride-hailing applications, and corporate and government fleets. ION has been officially
established today, during an inauguration ceremony attended by Badr Jafar, CEO of Crescent Enterprises, and Khaled Al Huraimel, group CEO of Bee’ah. In 2018, ION launched a pilot programme in Dubai with ridehailing service Careem, providing a fleet of Tesla Model S electric vehicles. With the pilot programme successfully completed, it is now expanding operations to other emirates as part of Bee’ah and Crescent Enterprises’ vision to revolutionise smart, sustainable transport, it stated. ION’s new operations are set to cater to the growing demand for sustainable transport options across the UAE, including providing next-generation mobility
solutions within Masdar City, supported by a fleet of Chevrolet Bolt electric cars, with plans to add on-demand services. Commenting on the expansion, Jafar said: “Our partnership with Bee’ah to establish ION stems from our shared vision of environmental sustainability, and aims to support the development of a zeroemission transport system for the UAE and the wider MENA region.” “We have seen significant shifts in energy policies in recent years in response to economic, social and environmental challenges, and it is vital that the private sector plays its role in this sustainability drive,” he added. Meanwhile, Al Huraimel said: “ION is an extension of a process
we started internally, by using a fleet of advanced, eco-friendly vehicles. This fleet of 1200 vehicles are also managed by a digitally enhanced system which uses features like automated route optimisation and RFID tagged bins to reduce emissions, optimise fuel consumption and the use of resources like vehicles and people.” “We have also placed the Middle East’s first and largest order for Tesla’s revolutionary Semi trucks. Through ION, we are making eco-friendly modes of transportation more accessible for residents, improving air quality levels through zero emissions and creating better living standards for people.”

TRUKKER SECURES $23 MILLION FUNDING FROM NEW BACKERS
EKAR LAUNCHES IN SAUDI ARABIA CAR-SHARING
The Middle East’s first and largest carshare operator, ekar, says it is using its successful $17.5 million Series B funding to launch operations in the Saudi capital Riyadh. “We are excited to announce the launch of ekar Riyadh and are eager to improve the lives of hundreds of thousands of Saudi residents and tourists alike with ekar’s seamless carshare service,” said Vilhelm Hedberg, CEO ekar Middle East. “Today, ekar UAE services 50,000 bookings per month, a number which we expect to quadruple over the next twelve months as we launch services across cities in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries. We have 1,000 ekars in our fleet and over 75,000 members and envision surpassing 10,000 ekars and over a million members by 2021.” New members in Saudi Arabia can enjoy two hours of free drive time upon registering via the ekar App. Ekar believes the Saudi market’s “young and tech-savvy population of 20 million smartphone users” are by-passing traditional car ownership in favour of alternative mobility solutions: “ekar is a natural extension of the transportation vertical in KSA and is perfectly suited to address a growing demand for cost-effective transportation on the back of ekar’s four years of experience building a world-class carsharing business. In addition, more than 70,000 women in the Kingdom have been issued driving licenses, and ekar is well-positioned to be the ‘first-car solution’ for these drivers. ekar is launching in Riyadh with 600 ekars and will launch in other cities throughout Saudi including Dammam, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina, and KAEC.” Hedberg said ekar was delighted to have a select group of strategic investors “who are aligned with ekar’s passion to provide cost-effective mobility across emerging markets. ekar’s in-house tech team now has the fuel to scale ekar across MENAT.” “We believe smart systems and shared transport platforms like ekar are the future for sustainable mobility especially in cities with densely populated environments such as Riyadh. We invest with conviction and we look forward to helping ekar succeed,” said Ali Hashemi, Managing Director of backers Polymath Ventures.

he past ten years has seen MAN Truck & Bus build on its reputation of providing German-made heavy engineering-inspired vehicles to the Middle East. It started the decade drafting in team members that had consolidated its position in Southern Africa to its then newly founded Dubai office with the objective of getting closer to the booming construction market while it took on many of its long-standing European competition with its well-regarded fleet of heavy trucks. Early this year, industry whispers suggested that MAN’s adventure in the region was drawing to a close and that it could be about to shutter its operation in the UAE. Last month, T&FME learned this could not be further from the truth. The regional managing director of MAN Truck & Bus Middle East restates the firm’s commitment to the Middle East and Africa region during an expansive interview with T&FME. Unlike his predecessor Franz von Redwitz, Jörg Mommertz is based in Germany – this (in part) led some industry observers to speculate that MAN Truck & Bus could fold its operation in the Middle East. Mommertz tells T&FME that his role requires him to be highly mobile with him travelling throughout the two continents to maintain close contact with the market and customers. He adds that changing market demand means MAN’s Dubai operation will function as a hub as it looks to expand its business across the Middle East and North Africa. “Opposite to the rumours, MAN doesn’t have any intention to close business here in Dubai,” said Mommertz. “We want to reinforce our activities here to use Dubai as a hub for the Middle East and the northern part of Africa.” He adds that southern Africa will be serviced by its present operation in South Africa: “There will be two hubs and we want to use Dubai even more... as a training and trade hub for the entire region.” Describing the Middle East market as bottoming out last year, he says it has now stabilised and believes there will be small but sustainable growth in the coming years. Conversely, he emphasises that MAN was interested in the African market as it could experience faster growth. “I personally believe the biggest growth potential we have in the future are markets outside Europe, and Africa is one. Maybe not the Middle East, which has, let’s say,

stabilised on the bottom line. I see a small but sustainable growth in the coming years in the Middle East. However, our biggest and highest growth potential we Sexpect to see in Africa. Most of the European truck manufacturers are looking for new opportunities; and I believe Africa has one of the biggest growth potentials.” The conversation naturally swerves into a deeper discussion on the African market. Chinese-led Asian manufacturers are securing a foothold there as sales tend to be dominated by smaller, lighter trucks and not the heavy construction models that MAN has been focussing on in the Middle East. Mommertz says that its marketing its own light to medium-duty offerings, the TGL and TGM, but in sectors and countries where local demand is not necessarily interested in the state-of-theart, it is able to offer models produced by its sister company MAN Latin America. “We have formed a strong cooperation with our sister company (MAN Latin America); offering the Volkswagen commercial vehicles product range. Today, we have a product workshop for the entire region, making our sales organisation, our family of importers aware of the products. This means we can offer the Latin American Products into DECEMBER 2019 TRUCK&FLEET ME 15

the budget segment,” he explains. Mommertz’ role requires him to be responsible for the African and Middle East markets and he will be working with the teams in its two hubs in South Africa (which takes care of Southern Africa) and the UAE (which is serving the Middle East and Northern Africa). It means racking up thousands of miles in the air and brings into focus why it is important for him not to be sitting in an office in either one of those bases. Fortunately, he says that as a selfconfessed truck man who once worked on the service side of the industry he enjoys talking directly with customers wherever they may be based. It shines through most when we briefly talk about a recent customer event in South Africa: “I love the country, I love the people. It has nice customers of course!” He laughs. Returning to the pivoting underway in Dubai he says that the operation is going to be focussed on being a trading and training hub; making use of the facilities established there as well as the UAE’s world class trade links. It will also provide access as an executive and customer management level hub where the company can co-ordinate its effort to process individual customer requirements and local feedback back to the engineering and development teams at its production centres in Europe and South America. Mommertz again emphasises that MAN Truck & Bus has recognised that the company needs to strengthen its ties to the end-user in the region and Dubai can play a crucial role beyond its
WHAT IS MAN LATIN AMERICA? MAN Latin America mainly operates under the Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus (Portuguese for Volkswagen Trucks and Buses) brand and specialises in the needs of developing markets. It offers light-, medium-, and heavy-duty trucks for long-distance and distribution transport, construction sites, and special areas. City and intercity buses and coaches are also available. Some of the products are available with alternative fuels. The services are tailored to special customer needs. In 2015, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus sold a total of 24,000 vehicles, 20,000 trucks, and 5,000 buses.
historical position as a sales outpost. “We want to be closer to the market and offer our customers in Africa and Middle East more adjusted, adapted and customised solutions taking care of the different market situations inside the continents. We want to be closer to the customer and follow our principle of ‘customer first’. “Market demands and customer requirements are different in Europe and it is better to get feedback directly from the markets so can offer better customised solutions.” In terms of customised trucks, MAN wants to fall-back on its own

bodybuilder connections in the country to construct completed rigs for customers across the region. “There are well-established bodybuilders here in Dubai. In the African markets, customers often require complete solutions and they want us an OEM and general contractor. We can provide an added value here by bringing the truck here, doing the body-building in the Middle East and then exporting to the market.” Effectively this could see an MAN Latin America truck kitted out by a local UAE body-builder contractor which is wrapped in services, like fleet management, maintenance, and logistics services, which are being coordinated by teams in Europe or possibly, in the case of telematics, from inside the region. “Exactly, so our Latin American product, for instance, becomes a premium economy solution,” he says, adding that the company is in the throes of finalising a partnership with a telematics provider as the MAN propzriety solution doesn’t currently cover the area. “We will roll that out soon as the customer is expecting an OEM solution for telematics.” It has also secure a local partner for financing, Mommertz explains: “Although I cannot yet disclose the name.” He continues: “Dubai is interesting as a hub which has also got a lot of ‘local content’ and we have been able to partner with (fellow German firm) as we also 100% German-owned, we have been able to partner with a German credit finance company to provide export financing. We recently completed an order for 300 units to Nigeria and it’s working well. These were heavy duty 6x4 trucks, and will be assembled in Nigeria at our CKD facility. This is the package solution we are offering.” He jokes: “300 is not your typical daily order. I would be happy with 300 in a month!” While he is keen to emphasise the differences between the markets we discuss, including the necessary adaptions to the trucks themselves, he notes that some larger fleets in the region relate to MAN Truck & Bus in much the same way as their European counterparts. “In the UAE there is the state of the art from Europe as you have very professional customers like Almarai or Emirates; and they are demanding like a European customer - and that means you have to offer the same business solutions – not only the hardware, the truck – you have to offer consultancy, telematics, logistic processes, fleet management; you pay a maintenance contract and all the elements around the hardware. MOMMERTZ ON E-MOBILITY Whether it is buses or the TGe truck, MAN is placing itself at the forefront of e-mobility. Mommertz has doubts whether the region can keep adapt the technology in the near-term, even if there is demand in the market. “Of course, we are getting a lot of contacts, a lot of questions, and requests in the UAE. On the one hand, we are still running in the GCC in Euro 2, 3 and 4 and we want to jump to MaaS and full emobility... Of course we are talking to customers who want to be a fore-runner of new technologies and we can do something as a test case but there are limitations. We have had some products requirements for the World Cup that are completely out of reach. “To give you an example, we are in the process of delivering city buses to a customer and they have got the strongest air conditioning unit available on the market. This AC is sucking 44kW per hour. So there is a still a discompetency (in terms of current battery technology capacity), but in urban public transport I can see the first business cases for e-mobility.”
and I tell it straight, the golden age of the Middle East will not come back. This is the reality, it’s not blaming anybody, but as business people we have to be realistic. “In 2018, from my point of view, we were on the bottom although 2019 has been better than the back-end of 2018. I don’t think the local sales team could have squeezed out more trucks and buses. “I expect in the Middle East to see the smallest, but sustainable growth of between 5% and 10% for the coming years. There will always be oil fields, infrastructure and the distribution segment will depend on local consumption and let’s see what the market is offering us. I think public transport also has great potential.”
The biggest growth potential are markets outside Europe, and Africa is one”
Given his decades of experience, what advice does he have for local fleets dealing with this new reality? “We are always talking about TCO but customers, even in Europe, don’t always understand how to calculate it. Calculating TCO is a very complicated business. I did once meet a bus operator who had a complete picture of the TCO of his fleet but it is rare. My best advice is to focus on the safety of drivers. A good driver is reducing your costs. You also need the right vehicle for your business. Traditionally customers in the Middle East have had to buy what the dealer had on the yard this is why we are offering customised trucks. You always need optimal configuration for your business.”
THE STATE OF THE ART Some customers in the GCC are used to going for the stateof-the-art when they renew their fleet, says Mommertz.

OPINION
MAAS TRANSPORTATION AECOM’s Martin Tillman, on how smart mobility services can shape our cities
F
or many cities, shared Mobilityas-a-Service (MaaS) is emerging not only as a potential solution to improve transport services for their citizens, but also an opportunity to free up valuable urban space for more affordable housing and increase economic and social inclusion across communities. Living increasingly digitally-enabled lives, we are all getting used to accessing what we want at the touch of a button — from new clothes to groceries and take-out. Transportation is no exception. Following the rapid expansion of transportation network companies (TNCs), such as Uber, the app has become key to how millions of people move around, challenging fixed transit systems and timetables. With their services launched in cities almost overnight, initial collaboration between TNCs, bike share companies and city governments has been limited. In response, city authorities have had to quickly develop policies and legislation to respond to and regulate these new transportation solutions and platforms. One issue is that these services can often add to cities’ transportation challenges, such as congestion and pollution.
A more integrated approach
One potential solution to this and cities’ other transportation pressures is shared Mobilityas-a-Service (MaaS). This approach brings together individual MaaS options – both public and private – such as trains, buses, ride hailing and sharing schemes for cars and bikes, taxis, 18 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2019
and shuttles/pods, for first- and last- mile connections to high-capacity, fixed-route service; or point-to-point service when fixedroute service doesn’t exist or is infrequent – in one place; using the latest digital innovations to offer an integrated point-to-point service to users accessible via a single mobile application app and payment channel. Shared MaaS approaches create the opportunity for consumers to shift from an ownership and/or single provider model of transport use, to paying for travel as a service. If done well, shared MaaS can promotes more sustainable decision- making, enabling users to compare different transport modes on costs, emissions, and flexibility, and so on; and allowing cities to incentivise, support and encourage travel behaviours that promote the long-term success of their citizens and city. An inclusivity- focused MaaS approach could boost access to education, work and healthcare for groups sometimes underserved by public and private mobility solutions. This includes older people, and those with low incomes, with disabilities, or living who live further out of town. MaaS, when coupled with high-capacity, fixed-route, public transport services, could give cities the catalyst they need to deliver substantive reform,: increasing the utilization use of existing vehicles via share schemes and other incentives, and providing a cost-effective and reliable alternative to car ownership and use. This could open up valuable real estate for redevelopment as mixed-use neighbourhoods,

which offer affordable housing, flexible workspaces, parks and other shared community spaces. By increasing efficiency and optimising how we use public roads, promoting transport innovation and developing smart infrastructure, MaaS could help cities radically reduce their carbon footprint and make roads safer in the future. Finally, for private operators, MaaS is a chance for private operators to grow their market share in a highly competitive industry, ensure the most efficient utilisation of their resources, build improved community relations, and benefit from a more collaborative relationship with city and transportation authorities. This includes establishing valuable data-sharing agreements between public and private transportation providers. A transportation revolution is underway. MaaS gives cities the opportunity to: move more of their citizens to and from existing transportation systems more efficiently; provide point-to-point, multi-modal services accessible via a single system; and partner with private companies. To make this a reality, cities need a clear, strategic vision; more flexible, sustainable and holistic approaches to urban planning;, a focus on smart infrastructure and sustainable, efficient and affordable solutions;, and greater collaboration and trust with private sector providers. Crucially, they need to show the public that MaaS can work for them, making their city a better place to live, work and visit.

AS GOOD AS IT GETS?
Almost. Noble, hi-tech and luxurious, the Audi A6 55 TFSI is the epitome of the modern sports sedan - and conveys enviable status, writes Paul Godfrey
I
n 2006, a friend of mine in London invited me to spend a weekend driving his prize possession – a 1974 Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer, one of the most sought-after models from the iconic brand and rated by many aficionados as among the greatest road cars ever made. Yet getting behind the wheel and driving the first 100 or so km was hugely perplexing massively heavy steering, a clutch that required more than 50kg of effort to depress in each shift and a weirdly far-from-the-controls seating position. It was only later that the marvels of the machine became apparent and it all started to make sense: the granite-like strength and marvellous feedback of the unassisted controls; the sky-rocket acceleration that left the best of today’s hot hatches floundering and distant in the rear-view mirror. The point is this: with 20 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2019
some cars, it just takes a while to ‘get it’, to fathom out what they’re really all about. That was never an issue with the Audi A6 55 TFSI quattro 3.0. From the get-go, it does exactly what you expect, epitomising pristinely-engineered ‘get the job done’ fare. For example: faced with intricate manoeuvres through a traffic jam within minutes of collecting the vehicle, there was never even a moment of concern; and needing to park-up in a packed free zone seemed second-nature. Any initial wariness of the full-size sedan’s dimensions was allayed by what was without doubt the best parking sensor system I’ve ever known – never over-reacting but giving help exactly where it was needed. (One of the secrets here is that the sensor bleep becomes continuous a metre from the obstacle - not at the point of imminent impact!).
Audi have visually transformed the A6 to an all-new look that’s imposing, noble”
But first things first. Audi have visually transformed the A6 from being every Jumeirah 5-star’s anonymous ‘hospitality car’ to an all-new look that’s imposing, noble – and to the uneducated eye, indistinguishable from the A8. Not anything to complain about for sure, but it left me asking the dealership how the A8 could possibly add anything to the equation. The test car’s Daytona Grey bodywork (complemented by Okapi brown-and-black upholstery) added to a perceived seniority and status – with several colleagues observing that “this looks like the best machine in the car park”. Opinions aside, the Audi’s scale and quality of finish had one very noticeable benefit: drive this and you’ll never be bullied by other drivers. Fellow road users are visibly more courteous and make way for the Audi’s stately profile. Just a small point on the coachwork, though:
TEST DRIVE
door fit (especially on the nearside rear) was noticeably less than 100% flush – disappointing given the overall presence, depth of paintwork and general impression of high quality. You’re sitting in first class
Cabin finish and quality is everything you expect from a ‘magic circle’ marque. Audi led the way in pulling German brands away from bland, plastic interiors to pristine choices of materials - and the A6’s altogether exemplary cabin is a case in point. Dashboard displays are (of course)100% digital, and while it may be true that no digital set-up has quite managed to match the intuitive userfriendliness that analogue controls took decades to master, there were no navigational challenges to speak of (except, Audi, please do something about those AC fan controls that really do require the driver to look away from the road). Materials choices were impeccable, with decorative inserts in what the manual calls ‘natural grey-brown, fine grain ash’ – twinned with matt-finish stainless steel surrounds. A special word is due for dashboard and interior lighting, taking the word ‘cabin’ to a new level – and creating a supportive, but never intrusive, environment that stops short, for example, of the R8’s glamour but nonetheless encourages eager passenger invites. Mention should go the blue up-lighting accents, extending around the entire cockpit and echoing the blue-lit door sills. Very nice. Both power-adjustable front seats include memory features which would be invaluable in family or multi-use settings – with the seats reverting to a neutral, easy-access position as the ignition shuts down. The panoramic glass sunroof – Audi quality engineering at its best – may not quite be unique, but is certainly very unusual in providing full-sky coverage for even the rear passengers.
A CLASS OF THEIR OWN Vehicles like the Audi A6 55 have created a genre of their own.
The performance paradox
The A6 successfully combines true sports car performance with a fullyappointed luxury sedan package”
Vehicles like the Audi A6 55 have really created a genre of their own: armed with 340bhp (that’s only 50 short of the Ferrari mentioned above!), the car leaps and bounds whenever requested – superb for lane-hopping when trying to break free from school-run jams. Use a heavy foot on the accelerator and down-change is instant; but use the most visceral of the drive modes – ‘S Dynamic’ to experience some g-force and tauter cornering power. In other words, the Audi successfully combines true sports car performance with a fully-appointed luxury sedan package. Let’s not, however, exaggerate: while the figures may be there, the overall experience is very much luxury cruising with a driver accent: it’s not an RS7, nor is it intended to be. But a very fast and highly driveable luxury sedan? Absolutely.
In terms of fuel consumption, obviously, the more you push, the more fuel you’ll use: avoid S Dynamic mode if you’re constrained to a frugal budget, for example. While the brochure describes consumption as 6.1L/100km, the reality on an around-town cycle was higher. Let’s not forget, though, that with a car of this value, scrupulously watching fuel consumption is never going to be your first priority. Regrettably, it’s necessary to add a caveat here: on the test car, the 11-bar fuel gauge didn’t move at all while driving the vehicle - and would then jump one or two bars as soon as the engine was restarted! Just as you thought Audi had cracked the secret of making a 340bhp unit as sparing as a Kia Rio… Audi commented that this may be an error in the test car, and would be investigated forthwith. Another small gripe: Paddle shifters are included on the basic package, but using the floor-mounted selector is not without its frustrations. At long red light intervals, moving the selector to ‘N’ could occasionally trigger a dashboard alert: “Please engage Parking Brake: car may roll away”. This is accompanied by the engine slipping into an idling mode, where revs go down dramatically – in two lurches – to around 300rpm. Following this, re-engaging ‘D’ mode, the car flatly refused to move – resulting in a crescendo of horns from angry drivers in the queue behind. Having said this, most of the time, the selector worked without incident. While previously mentioning the sheer manageability of the car, this is in no small part down to the excellent electromechanical steering, which is weightvariable according to speed. So three-point turns are effortless, but when changing lanes at 120km/h, there’s real feel and feedback. With nights drawing in, it was good to see the HD Matrix LED headlights come on remotely as soon as you press ‘unlock’ on the remote (which activates from a range of around 300 metres), flooding the area with their hugely brilliant white light. On struggling with arms-full of Spinney’s bags, the sensorcontrolled luggage compartment release was also a blessing – why can’t all cars do this? Verdict
WELL-CONSIDERED LUXURY The A6 offers speed and luxury, as well as a formidable range of gadgets.
Would I own one? Categorically, yes. But there’s a (good) caveat. While far from bland, the A6 simply didn’t require any adjusting to at all. It naturally became a part of my lifestyle in the first day of ownership. At the end of the day, it’s an incredibly well-considered luxury sedan – with a formidable range of gadgets – but it’s not going to challenge you to reinvent your world. But then again, if that’s what you wanted, you might be better scanning the classifieds for a used Evolution 9… DECEMBER 2019 TRUCK&FLEET ME 21
INTERVIEW
A LINK IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN Enoc Link’s chief business officer Saeed Amiri talks to Angitha Pradeep about the fuel delivery service
F
ollowing a successful trial earlier in the year, Saeed Amiri explains how the service can provide fleets with convenient access to fuel delivery via its own fleet of purpose-built vehicles. It would be great to get an overview of how Enoc Link works
Enoc Link is an extension to our existing gas network stations, so with Enoc Link we are bringing the services of a gas station to clients. So, we have two different business models: we have B2B and B2C. B2C customers are individual people who will require fuel to be delivered to their homes, offices or wherever they are. And then we have the other model which is based on B2B, which 22 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2019
is mainly about corporate and commercial customers. For them, we have all the three products, we have Special, Diesel and Super. So, our model is based on an application, it’s an app-based on-demand service and the end-user has to just download the application, register his vehicle and credit card and then he can order anytime he wants and the vehicle will reach him and everything is done seamlessly and the client is not required to be around. Its an end-to-end digital base, so customers can do everything online. So, for business customers, every customer has his own dashboard where he can view all the transactions online. Customers can track each and every transaction, including what vehicle fuel (has been used), how many kms the vehicle can run, the utilisation of those
vehicles. The reason why we provide this is to help them in their business as well.
It took us lots of time to design the truck, understand the customers better, and keep on modifying our truck”
Is the service only available to customers in Dubai?
For B2C, which we piloted recently in September, we have not yet launched it to the entire city. We have a few locations and from there we will grow to new locations. We have signed a couple of deals with some developers also to exclusively deliver to their tenants in residential areas. On the B2B side, we started piloting it from April and, as you know, this is related to fuel delivery and it took us lots of time to design the truck, understand the customers better, and keep on modifying our truck, and our offering and our metering system
INTERVIEW
or apps, so from April we started till now and now we are launching it officially. What are the challenges you have encountered since launching?
When it comes to B2C, we at Enoc, already have more than 130 network of gas stations, and we believe that- especially with Expo coming - we are anticipating 25 million visitors for Expo by 2020. So, we believe that the requirements for petrol will actually increase dramatically and by end of 2020 we will have more than 190 gas stations. We have launched the compact station, which is again a smaller model of gas station, which is relocatable so we can actually we can relocate it wherever you want, so it is an extension to the existing gas stations we have. Enoc Link, similarly, is another extension to our gas stations. We see a need for customers in locations where we are not available. That’s why you don’t see us in the entire city. We believe that there are specific areas in Dubai and other emirates also where gas stations are not available and people really need service like this, and they need someone who is trusted to deliver fuel to them. This is an extension to the B2C offering that we already have. On the B2B side, we have identified via market research and studies that many of the B2B customers really need fuel to reach to them, for various reasons. Many equipment like cranes and construction machinery cant actually cant reach gas stations and are not designed to go to a gas station. Those type of clients really need fuel to be delivered to them. Unfortunately, we were not in that industry (construction) before, so they used to source their requirement from the market; which are not reliable suppliers. We knew that there was a need for these customers to have a trusted supplier to ensure the continuity of their businesses. They need a supplier to have diesel delivered to them every day or whenever they want. And with Enoc, we have our own refinery and are a trusted supplier. Other types of B2B customers that really need our services are logistics companies, for example. They want to increase their productivity and efficiency, they don’t want to go to a gas station and waste time, fuelling. Instead, they want to have their vehicles always filled, at their location, and ready to be operational. So, that will not only help them but us also to reduce the traffic in our stations with big buses and equipment. Are you prepared to take on competition in the market?
Enoc Next is a programme that enoc really needed to transform us to our new era of digitalisation”
We actually believe that competition is good for the market. And in a market like dubai, where even the leaders always encourage people to come up with innovative products, innovative businesses, I think it is always good to have competitors in the market: for the market and for the customers as well. Customers today have different choices and different suppliers to chose from; so, we believe that competition is healthy, good for the market and, at the end of the day, we are all here to make Dubai a happier city, a more innovative city. Competition, we believe, is a very good thing to have in the market. What are your current expansion plans?
At this point of time, we are focusing on Dubai and the UAE market. We are currently available
in certain locations only, and we are growing gradually now. It will be a gradual growth, you can download the app, you can look at the areas we sell, but we are in certain areas only. Where does Enoc Link fit into Enoc’s overall digitalisation plan?
Enoc launched the Enoc Next programme last year. It’s an acceleration programme for businesses and out of that we came up with two businesses that we have now launched. One was BEEMA, which is a pay per km insurance, and the other one is Enoc Link, which we are launching now. The programme actually enabled Enoc to transform from its existing business to a more digital-based business, and to adapt to the market and customer requirements. In today’s

authorities, we at enoc we are of cours, proud to be a player that has always been with the government helping to stop the illegal trade of fuel and fuel safety. I think safety has to be top for anyone wishing to do a business like this. With Enoc Link also, our offer is completely based on customer need. As I said, we conducted many studies in the market and, based on that, we believe that our model provides customers with what they are looking for. What other benefits and technology do you provide?

market, customers really need things to be faster, easier, digitally-based so we believe Enoc Next is a programme that enoc really needed to transform us to our new era of digitalisation. Do you see this as part of the sustainable and diversified economy
We are reducing traffic on the road, we are reducing traffic at the station, similarly, with BEEMA, where you pay per km, the lesser you drive, the more you use the public transportation, the less you pay for bill. So, all these programmes are in line with the government’s vision.
that UAE is trying to achieve?
Again, as I said, the UAE market is a market that is evolving and we at Enoc believe that these new innovative products like Enoc Link, and even BEEMA are all in-line with the vision of our government. We need the city to be smarter, we need the innovation. For example, if you take Enoc Link: you will find less customers driving and changing the route to go to the gas station. You can be in your office and we come fill your car and go.
What sort of legal framework have you needed to adhere to?
We started this concept a long time back, a year ago actually, (and) most of this time was taken to perfect this model because of fuel safety. In any industry, safety is important. We have given lots of thought to safety and every component of the truck has been designed based on the highest safety standards. Coming to the licensing and the

We see a need for customers in locations where we are not available. That’s why you don’t see us in the entire city”
We have a complete fraud-free solution, our truck is a completely online truck, so we have eliminated the human interference in the transaction. What that means is that the communication happens between the metre and the vehicle, so we have isolated humans between the transaction to ensure that there is no wrong delivery or any fraud possible. Another thing we have done is that customers want reliable suppliers that there can always be supply. With other small traders in the market; sometimes they have fuel, sometimes they don’t. As a business, you don’t want to wake up one morning and realise there is no fuel. So, as Enoc, we act as a reliable supplier that can always deliver fuel to our customer. Those companies can check, because companies have different types of suppliers and different types of vehicles so by looking at their fuel consumption and efficiencies of those engines, they can decide on their future purchases of equipment’s, they can monitor their consumption, its like a complete business solution to business owners.

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE
Electric vehicles dominate this year’s Dubai International Motor Show
M
ore than any previous event, this year’s Dubai International Motor Show showed that the auto-industry, at least, believes that electric vehicles are here to stay in the region. It also offered a tease of an autonomous future. There were plenty of the batterypowered cars that the organisers described as taking the motoring industry by storm. The UAE home of the show has certainly committed itself to lowering emissions and using clean energy, encouraging manufacturers to offer electric vehicles (EVs) as a future-now solution. on Nissan’s stand at the show, the brand demonstrated its expertise from almost a decade of developing electric vehicles “to inspire conversations” about sustainability. Visitors had the opportunity to produce energy as a currency to pay for their cup of freshly brewed cappuccino or hotchocolate prepared at a barista station that runs purely off the iconic Nissan LEAF – the world’s best-selling electric car. As an extra attraction, participants could opt to have their photo, taken at the station, or select one of the many Nissan images, on their beverage. Nissan said it wants to use cutting-edge technology to allow owners of Nissan’s electric vehicles “to be able to easily connect their cars with energy systems and charge
their batteries, power homes and businesses or feed energy back to power grids.” Thierry Sabbagh, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East, added: “Electric vehicles are just one element of Nissan’s vision. Our ‘Energy Sharing Corner’ is the perfect way to showcase to customers how we can potentially revolutionise the way in which we generate and utilise energy. “We want customers to experience the electric lifestyle for themselves and see that future living involves using their electric cars for much more than just driving – they can be used in nearly every aspect of their lives. Our Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision calls for changing how cars are integrated with society, and Nissan Energy turns that vision into reality.” According to Sabbagh, Nissan has been a pioneer in EV technology for decades. “In 2010 we introduced the world’s first mass-market EV, Nissan LEAF, that today is the world’s best-selling electric car surpassing 560,000 unit sales, solidifying the model’s role in the global shift toward sustainable mobility,” he said. “This year, through our ‘Energy Sharing Corner’, we showcased how we can potentially revolutionise the way in which we generate and utilise energy. We want customers to see that future living involves using their electric cars for much more than just driving – they can be used in nearly every aspect of their lives.” That’s not to say the Japanese giant has turned its back on traditional power just yet. Indeed, inspired by one of the most iconic animals to inhabit the desert sands, the fleet-footed Gazelle, Nissan unveiled two exciting new concept cars - Gazelle Storm and Navara Gazelle at the show. The company said the Gazelle Storm has been exclusively developed for customers in the Middle East, describing it as a oneoff concept vehicle, that takes the iconic Nissan Patrol Super Safari concept of offering “an off-road experience that can conquer anywhere” with a higher approach angle and an on-board tire compressor. This fits in perfectly with the offroading culture of the region, it said: “It provides the key aspects for dune bashing, as well as extreme overland experiences that adventure enthusiasts are thirsty for. The Gazelle Storm Concept is powered by a 4.8L 6-cylinder powerhouse, and in a nod to local tastes, embraces a premium and tough ‘Gazelle Storm’ leather interior and varying mood lights. “Ready to conquer the great outdoors, the concept car also comes with a builtDECEMBER 2019 TRUCK&FLEET ME 27

It was a fantastic feeling to see the students’ faces when their designs were unveiled.” Nicky Stimpson, mother of Zac Stimpson, whose design was brought to life in 3D by Italdesign, said, “I am so thrilled that he is one of the finalists; he was so keen to enter because he has loved cars his whole life. His idea started with flying as the main factor in his design and then he was inspired by the falcon so the bonnet is a beak, the spoiler in the back is the tail of the falcon and of course the wings and the headlights are the claws of the falcon, with the indicators inside as well.”
“Drive your Ambition” strategy to a new level, with the Middle East premiere of the much-awaited all-electric high-performance “Mitsubishi e-Evolution” SUV concept car. The Mitsubishi e-Evolution is described by the company as a technical prototype that illustrates the strategic directions of a renewed Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) brand that incorporates the strengths of SUV, EV, and the ability to integrate new systems for a connected mobility customer experience. Masahiko Takahashi, President at Mitsubishi Motors Middle East and Africa said: “Our global tagline “Drive your Ambition” amplifies Mitsubishi Motors’ commitment and efforts in creating vehicles that are exciting, dynamic, tough, Innovative, and smart to cater for customers’ needs around the world. This year, we are proud to present for the first time ever in the Middle East the Regional Preview of the Mitsubishi e-Evolution concept car, which embodies the company’s new adventurous and progressive brand strategy.” The Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept design uses all four-wheels, and the agility of a high-performance cross-country tourer coupled with MMC’s long and strong heritage of proven off-road performance, along with superior 4WD control. The front face is a fresh take on MMC’s Archetypal Dynamic Shield – Now can be seen on the new 2020 Outlander PHEV, 2020 Montero Sport and 2020 ASX – design. The black grille is shielded under glass to give the car a subtle rendition that it is a high-performance electric vehicle. Adding to the vehicle’s honed aerodynamics, the drawn-in air passes jet tailfins on the C-pillars before exiting on either side of the rear bumper. A sharply slanted front windshield and short overhangs give the vehicle a unique side profile that has not been possible before the arrival of electric propulsion. High ground clearance, short overhangs, strong shoulders, and narrow hips project nimbleness and agility. Muscular tyres that protrude at the four corners communicate powerful 4WD torque. Bars running from front to rear along either side of the roof to enhance the vehicle’s muscular attitude. The large hexagon shape at the rear, draws inspiration from the spare tire cover of the quintessential SUV, the legendary Pajero. The triple motor 4WD system employs

Vladimir Chekhuta explores the history of the Foundation Berliet
V
isiting France this year, I was able to get to the beautiful city of Lyon and visit the Foundation of automotive heritage Marius Berliet (Fondation De L’ Automobile Marius Berliet). This organisation keeps a huge array of archival materials about old trucks, buses and cars. The Foundation itself has two main missions: preserving history of all Berliet vehicles, as well as safeguarding and enhancing the truck, coach and bus history for all the French automative manufacturers (there were more than 150 vehicles). I do not want to delve deep into the history of brand Berliet, as it has been written about a lot (read Truck & Fleet, July 2019), but I would like to tell a few words about 30 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2019
how the French auto-giant was absorbed by a (at the time) very average automaker. In the late 1960s, Berliet’s management made an important strategic decision to exchange shares with French firms Berliet, Citroën and Michelin; forming a new industrial group. Enjoying moderate success it began to churn out earnings for shareholders while enabling optimisation across the brands, such as the production of Citroën trucks coming into Berliet factories in 1967. However, on 17 October, 1973, the oil crisis struck. On this day, all the members of OAPEC decided not to supply oil to Western countries and during the next year the price of oil quadrupled. The rising prices on fuel hit global automakers hard at at time where both Citroën and Berliet were lumbered with bad

deals. While the production of trucks did not stop, the industrial group was very much in need of money and it sent its representatives to the French government asking for help. The government at that time already owned a truck brand Renault, which in most characteristics was weaker than Berliet. With the government sympathetic to industrialists, the money was secured, but in exchange for this support it demanded shares of the company Berliet. This sitting head of company Paul Berlier (son of Marius Berlier) could not influence the partners which had shares of his company and thus the “petty blackmail” ended with a transfer of the controlling stake of Berliet to the French government. In 1975, the factories of the company employed a total of 24,000

people but by 1978 an epic and complete reformatting of French automotive industry was underway with the appearance of a new automaker Renault V. I., which with the help of the government completely absorbed the brands of Berliet and Saviem. Building the Berliet
The Berliet Foundation is not a museum, but ... it has a conservatory... Established in 1982, the Marius Berliet (1866-1949) automotive heritage Foundation initially received many archival materials that had belonged to the now de-funct company Berliet. The first President of Foundation was Paul Berlier (1918 -2012) – the son of the founder of the company and its last head (from 1950 to 1978). Today in its Lyon vaults are more than 300,000 collected and carefully stored documents. They include original chassis and engine drawings from the first models, corporate photographs, brochures and catalogues, automobile Newspapers and magazines from different eras, and personal belongings of owner’s company. All this is stored in the Villa, which was built in 1916 in Lyon on the Avenue Esquirol, and once belonged to the Berliet family. The basement of the building was equipped with special climatic equipment that supports special conditions of humidity and temperature. Here are stored most the valuable documents: original drawings of vehicles, many of which have already passed for 100 years. Located in a village 30 km north of Lyon, the Berliet Foundation’s Conservatoire (a hangar with a total area 7200 m2) contains a collection of vehicles that form the “metal memory” of the Foundation. The collection today totals more than 280 fully restored cars, buses, trucks, tractors and engines. More than 60 vehicles are currently in the process of restoration. In total, the collection contains vehicles of 30 different auto-brands produced between 1886 and the late 1990s. The high status of the organisation has enabled it to gain the title of historic landmarks for vehicles in its collection. This title was awarded by the Ministry Culture of France in 1988 to the truck Berliet type M (1910), and in 1992 a similar title was awarded to the Latil truck built in 1899. Later, in 1994, the road locomotive Patay (1886) also gained the title. How do old trucks get into the collection? This happens in different ways. At first, the base of the collection was formed by vehicles belonging to company Berliet but donations have become an important second way with people

sometimes giving it their old trucks or sometimes reporting the location of other potentially interesting automobiles. In most cases, the old machines go into the Foundation in a very degraded condition but the process of restoring is made easier thanks to huge repository of photographs and drawings which belong to Foundation. As I noted, today the Foundation isn’t an official museum. Yes, there is no ticket office, electronic guides, caretakers and guides. We can say that it is very difficult to get here, even for journalists. Although, you join the Association of Friends Foundation. Annual membership will cost you 49 €. All friends of the Foundation, of which there are
already more than 1,500 around the world, regularly receive a newsletter (an official magazine published by the organisation). The Foundation also occasionally announces a holiday, an open day for all friends. I must to say that this holiday happens no often than the New year, but on this day every friend of the Foundation can visit the Conservatory for free. And each participant of the holiday receives an invitation not only for himself, but for three people who can accompany him at this event. Perhaps it will seem to some to not be very convenient, well, then there is only one way: to buy a magazine with article about old automobiles of the Berliet Foundation.
125 YEARS OF HISTORY The Foundation’s Conservatoire is a treasure trove of vehicles from the entire French automotive industry stretching back 125 years.

As the only point of contact between the vehicle and road, the tyre communicates with the vehicle, driver and can use a 5G network to transmit data the entire roadway infrastructure. The Pirelli Cyber Tyre’s internal sensor registers kilometers clocked, dynamic load and, for the first time, situations of potential danger on road surfaces0; from the presence of water to poor grip. This information will enable the car to adapt its control and

NO PLANS TO RAISE VAT IN ‘NEAR FUTURE’ FINANCE
Reports that the UAE is planning on raising VAT and introduce further direct taxation have been refuted by a senior government minister. Younis Haji Al Khouri, Undersecretary of Ministry of Finance, told local media that, “there are no plans or decisions to raise VAT or impose new taxes in the near future.” Quoted by Gulf News, he added: “There is no validity [in the rumours] on direct taxes or increasing VAT. Since the introduction of the VAT, it was decided that there will be no increases for five years, after which the matter will be reviewed and an appropriate decision taken.” An article published by Khaleej Times quoted industry experts who said that residents and companies must be prepared for new direct and indirect taxes down the line, as oil prices remain low. Tax experts in the region reportedly told the daily that new taxes are expected to be applied on wealth and property, as well on businesses.

SAFETY: BATTERY HACKS
Ford on caring for your car’s battery – and what you need when your car won’t start
A
healthy battery is one of the many key components to proper vehicle operation. It helps start the engine and helps keep the electronics running. It also lets you charge your phone and play your music – even when the engine is off. As you might expect, automotive batteries gradually lose power over time, and hot weather is especially hard on them – but a few simple preventive measures will go a long way toward keeping your car battery in tip-top condition.
TAKING CARE OF IT Almost any dealership service centre can check the condition of your battery and charging system in a matter of minutes and many perform this service free of charge.
Safety
One of the main safety concerns with batteries is the small possibility of shock. Car batteries are referred to as “lead-acid” because they contain lead plates submerged in sulphuric acid to store and release electricity. Even if it’s too weak to start your car, a battery may still be able to give you a shock – so don’t smoke near it. Also, be careful with tools when tightening or loosening terminal connectors; tools can easily slip and bridge the gap between the positive and negative terminals, which could lead to burns or a shock Maintenance
Keep the cable connections clean and tight. Corroded battery terminals and connectors will compromise the ability of the starter motor to draw current from the battery, and for the charging system to keep it topped up. You can remove corrosion from the terminals and connectors with a stiff brush, sandpaper or a wire brush. If the battery has caps that let you check the water level, keep it up to the full-mark, usually just under an inch from the top of the cell. You can use distilled water but tap water is also fine. Do wear eye protection – safety glasses or goggles – when doing so. The battery is normally held in place with a retaining strap – and this should be tightly clamped so the battery can’t slide around.
Jump-starting
If the battery is sound but too weak to start your car, the alternator may be able to recharge it as you drive. The trick is to get the car going, and jump-starting will often do the job. But before you get out the cables, check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for detailed instructions of what to do. Some carmakers advise against jump-starting to protect the car’s electronics from a power surge. Some batteries have a “state of charge” indicator: a fully charged battery has a coloured indicator, usually green or red. Black or clear means the battery is completely discharged and you should

A
s part of its 30th anniversary, INFINITI Motor Company is supporting a mini expedition in Petra, Jordan, employing NASA imaging technology and a fleet of its versatile SUVs, to visit a new discovery emblematic of the evolution of modern archaeology. Following in the footsteps of National Geographic Fellow and Archaeology Professor Sarah Parcak, who helped discover a new site in Petra using remote sensing satellites and drones, INFINITI, in a fleet of QX80s and QX50s, followed the ancient King’s Road from the Dead Sea to the historic trading center of Petra. Parcak that “had been hiding in plain sight.” With the help of satellite and drone remote sensing technology, Parcak and a colleague discovered a 50m by 100m platform just south of the ancient city. According to the scientific survey, the platform has no known parallels to any other structure in Petra. Parcak is a leader in using remote sensing in archaeology, and this year published a book called: “Archaeology from Space.” “Satellites are one of a number of tools available to help archaeologists gain a better understanding of the landscapes around the sites where they work, and a way for them to discover features on sites or even entire sites in time and cost-efficient ways,” said the history expert. “It can take decades to survey regions, and satellites can help archaeological teams to

to empower our customers on the road and in life. What better place than Jordan to recognize those who have challenged convention? “Not only has there been cutting edge technology used to discover more aspects of Petra, which has been explored so many times; but to stand in the footsteps of Jordanian leaders as well as Faisal I bin Hussein bin Ali al-Hashemi and T.E. Lawrence, who changed the rules of military engagement 100 years ago during their famous ‘march to Aqaba’, as well as later attempts to unify the region.” “I challenge convention by making archaeology accessible for everyone,” said Parcak forthrightly. “Right now, I think we world sees archaeology as too disconnected from their everyday lives, and that it is something that only academics can do. increased for archaeologists to engage more with the public, especially in the younger generation of archaeologists, we haven’t done enough. He added: “The public, especially students, need to see women and Indigenous and black and Asian archaeologists elevated on public platforms. “They need to know that their contributions are valid and essential, which is one of the main reasons I started Globalxplorer. I want to empower as many people as possible to feel like they can play an important role in telling our shared human story.” Using TEDtalk prize money she earned, Parcak started Globalxplorer, an online platform that uses the power of the crowd to analyse the incredible wealth of satellite images currently available to archaeologists. GlobalXplorer° aims to bring the wonder of archaeological discovery to all, and to help better understand our connection to the past. So far, Dr. Parcak’s techniques have helped locate 17 potential pyramids, in addition to 3,100 potential forgotten settlements and 1,000 potential lost tombs in Egypt — and she’s also made significant discoveries in the Viking world and Roman Empire. With the help of citizen scientists across the globe, she hopes to uncover much, much more. “The INFINITI Jordan experience represents the convergence of persistence, resilience and innovation, as we celebrate the brand’s 30 year journey. We chose Petra for this adventure, one of the oldest known civilizations in the world, for its symbolism of the progressive challenger spirit. “The historic Nabatean community were opportunists, entrepreneurial at heart, and forged their own path in life – qualities that find synergies with our own brand and INFINITI customers. “As we explore their lasting legacy with new discoveries in Petra, we celebrate those who challenge convention”, said Markus Leithe, Managing Director, INFINITI Middle East. The expedition to Petra follows a very successful Qxploration expedition last year in the Gobi Desert. Partnering with The Explorers Club, INFINITI supported an expedition which pioneered similar remote sensing technology to update the way paleontology is conducted. The expedition revisited the route of famed American explorer Roy Chapman Andrews (considered the inspiration for Indiana Jones) 100 years after he discovered dinosaur eggs at the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi. Andrews was the first explorer to use motorized vehicles, making his expedition much more efficient. This expedition employed similar advanced mapping technology to pinpoint likely fossil locations across enormous swaths of land. The 35-person multidisciplinary team found possible evidence of three new dinosaur species, more than 250 new fossil locations, five entirely new areas previously not known to contain fossils, and hundreds of fossilized bones, including those of mammals, which were not previously known to have existed in the area. Paleontologists were able to analyse an enormous amount of data collected from satellite and drone imagery to pinpoint high probability locations for fossilization, based on geological and sedimentary markers. The team could then travel quickly to the sites in a fleet of INFINITI SUVs to prospect for fossils. The combination of satellite and drone imaging, together with a team of paleontologists– all working together – has never be done before. DECEMBER 2019 TRUCK&FLEET ME 37

WORKING TOWARDS ZERO ACCIDENTS Volvo Trucks Accident Research Team on trying to rid our roads of accidents

nna Theander says she is passionate about safety. She has been working in the field of active safety, preventing accidents and saving lives, for 15 years. Since 2018, she’s the head of the Volvo Accident Research Team. She says to achieve Volvo Truck’s vision of zero accidents with Volvo trucks, it is important for it to understand all aspects of traffic safety. “2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the inception of the Accident Research Team. It all began when we started to investigate accidents involving trucks in Sweden, in order understand why these accidents occurred. The accumulated knowledge from accident research is valuable input for us when developing even safer and more ergonomic trucks for the future”, says Anna Theander. The scope is wider today and the methods have been 38 TRUCK&FLEET ME DECEMBER 2019
refined, but the main objective remains. It is all about avoiding accidents and build a safer future. To achieve the vision of zero accidents with our products, it is important for us to understand all aspects of traffic safety. “The insights are valuable input for us to create even safer and more ergonomic trucks for the future. And even though technological development has advanced, the scope is wider and the methods have been refined – the main objective remains. It’s all about help avoiding accidents and build a safer future. To achieve our vision of zero accidents with Volvo trucks, it is important for us to understand all aspects of traffic safety.” She adds that Volvo Trucks is collaborating with the Swedish Transport Administration, rescue services, dealers and sometimes the police. Collaboration is central to her work.

“Internally we have a cross-disciplinary team of ten experts in their fields with whom I work closely. Our work comes in towards the end of the development process. We pass on the results of our work to the product development teams for them to improve safety even further. So yes, it is very important.” Traffic safety is complex and preventing accidents stretches far beyond the design and use of trucks. Behind the wheel, you interact with other road users. How road users behave, how they interact and whether they are focused or distracted play a huge role and need to be considered. In traffic, technology can both help and distract us. Volvo Trucks Traffic & Product Safety Director, Anna Wrige Berling explains: “Take smartphones for instance, they steal our attention. And not only for drivers behind the steering wheel – many

THE TECH POWERING THE DRIVE TO ZERO ACCIDENTS Today, Volvo trucks has several systems that can increase safety levels – such as Volvo Dynamic Steering, which is designed to provide increased stability at high speeds and assist the driver in critical situations. The system has recently been further developed with two new safety enhancing functions. Volvo Dynamic Steering with Stability Assist is designed to help the driver avoid skidding and Volvo Dynamic Steering with Lane Keeping Assist gives the driver a helping hand when the system detects that the truck is showing signs of drifting towards the lane markings. The Collision Warning with Emergency Brake system is another example. If the system detects an upcoming collision, it alerts and actively helps the driver to brake the truck to avoid or mitigate a collision. Volvo Trucks also offer systems which attract drivers’ attention if they are distracted or tired. Theander believes that we will come closer to zero accidents: “We must continue to work towards achieving our zero accident vision. There is no other alternative.”
pedestrians and even bicyclists look at their phones when crossing the road and fail to pay attention to the traffic situation for truck drivers and other road users.” Conclusions about smartphones, seat belt use and other findings from Volvo Trucks are accessible in the Volvo Trucks Safety Report 2017. The report is a result of the Accident Research Team’s efforts. And since traffic safety is complex, different skills are needed. The Accident Research Team is crossdisciplinary and consists of a safety research network, all experts in their field. Their work falls into three different categories. The operational activities include being on standby to investigate accidents. The road safety category involves taking part in various forums. The third category concerns accident statistics and analysis. “The members of my team visit the scenes of accidents, investigate what has happened and carry out analyses and indepth studies,” explains Anna Theander. “Our work comes after the development process, when the trucks are out in real traffic. We pass on the result of our work to the product development teams so they can improve safety even further. We are currently focusing on Sweden and other European countries, but in the future we will also be looking at Asia and the rest of the world to find out more about how accidents can be prevented there as well.” Today’s technology also helps the team to understand the scenarios leading to accidents and how to minimize the damages. Information is collected, analysed and in the end, the team members can actually read a scenario in detail.

BEHIND THE CAUSES Anna Theander and Anna Wrige Berling (left) say accident prevention stretches far beyond the design and use of trucks.
The team is also investigating how new technologies such as automation can improve safety. “When we develop autonomous systems, they must fulfil the high standards we have set within safety. Autonomous systems can bring major benefits in a driver’s everyday work, as an example they can be an advantage in workplaces where drivers can be put at risk. It is important to remember that drivers prevent more accidents than they cause and therefore we need to consider every aspect of traffic safety in our development”, says Anna Theander. “The future in the field of safety looks bright. Because safety is fundamental in automation, we will be pushed to develop even more sophisticated safety systems. And possibly at a higher pace than has been the case in the past.” explains Anna Theander. In the end, the insights and knowledge gained by the Accident Research Team’s efforts are used as input when creating safety systems for Volvo trucks. “The future in the field of safety looks bright. Safety is fundamental when it comes to automation, and we will be pushed to develop even more sophisticated safety systems. The Accident Research Team will continue to provide important insights and contribute to proactively improve road safety – for traditional human drivers as well as for new autonomous vehicles. “To reach the vison of zero accidents, we need to collaborate with external partners and stakeholders. As legislation is introduced to standardise safety systems, I believe that we will come closer to the vision of zero accidents with Volvo Group products.”. DECEMBER 2019 TRUCK&FLEET ME 39

CCIONA says it is has proven that zero-emission electric vehicles can take on the extreme conditions of the Emirates Desert Championship rally. Its zero-emission electric vehicle, the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered, took part in the sixth edition of the Emirates Desert Championship, which was held in Dubai between the 15th and 17th of November. The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered is the outcome of over five years of research and development work spearheaded by ACCIONA. It is the most energy-efficient electric car in the world, with a 250 kW synchronous electric motor, equivalent to 340 horsepower. The car is powered by six ultra-fast charging lithium battery modules plus a 100W solar panel. It became the first electric model to
compete in this extreme rally after the organisers created a new category “to showcase the potential of clean energy compared to fossil in extreme tournament conditions.” The challengeing race covers 411Km and will be divided into two stages. “Practically the entire track will run through the Liwa desert, where the track crossing the sand dunes illustrates the tournament’s uniquely extreme and tough conditions,” explained ACCIONA. The ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered was the first electric vehicle to complete the iconic Dakar Rally and has subsequently joined other FIA World Championship events, such as the Italian Baja or the Morocco Rally, as well as regional competitions such as the Tatts Finke Desert Race (Australia). Joining the Emirates Desert Championship saw the vehicle become the only 100% electric vehicle to participate in homologated
rally events across five continents. 2017 Dakar pilot Ariel Jaton returned behind the wheel of the ACCIONA 100% EcoPowered with veteran co-driver and team manager Edu Blanco completing the team. ACCIONA says this new challenge is proof its continuous efforts to promote sustainability through putting clean energy to the test and raising awareness of the need to mitigate climate change. ACCIONA’s 100% Ecopowered car will also tour some of the company’s most emblematic projects in UAE, such as the Dubai 2020 Expo Metro and the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. Both workers and visitors will be able to learn firsthand about the vehicle’s technology and to fully appreciate the green bet it embodies in the motor industry. ACCIONA’s electric car will also be presented at various universities and schools in order to bring its sustainable concept closer to new generations.
