CAN WE ASK

E-SCOOTERS TO FOLLOW THE SAME RULES?

Can we please ask those nutty e-scooter riders to follow the same rules as the rest of us?! I first started seeing e-scooters zipping around our communities about two years ago, and to be honest I wasn’t really paying much attention to them at the time. Seems like they weren’t either. They just seemed to be a bit of harmless fun as they bolted here and there. I even thought they could be useful AtoB’ers in some areas. More fool me. Ever since I started seeing them move onto all but the fastest of highways, I’m starting to see them as a real menace. E-scooters have rapidly become a popular way to navigate Dubai, offering quick and efficient transit for short deliveries. However, their increasing presence on our roads has also highlighted a significant gap in safety practices among some users. As much as we welcome e-scooters as an eco-friendly and practical alternative for short commutes, we must also confront the growing safety concerns they pose. Just last week, driving home in the dark, I encountered an e-scooter rider unexpectedly coming the wrong way down a busy street without any lights or reflective clothing. In the dimly lit evening, he seemed to appear out of nowhere, swerving past traffic with nothing but the faint hum of the wheels to alert anyone nearby. It was a stark reminder of how dangerous this can be — for both the rider and everyone else on the road.

Moments like these underline just how crucial it is for e-scooter riders to take responsibility for their own visibility and safety, especially in low-light conditions.

Dubai’s roads are bustling with cars, buses, motorbikes, and now, e-scooters, making it crucial for all users to adhere to road safety regulations. Unlike cyclists and motorcyclists, who are generally expected to wear helmets and protective clothing, many e-scooter riders can be seen weaving through traffic with little to no protection. This lack of safety equipment, combined with the relatively low visibility of e-scooters, places riders at high risk in the event of an accident.

I’m no longer suprised to see an e-scooter screaming around and reaching serious speed and often in close proximity to fast-moving vehicles. Riders have got to start adopting a mindset similar to motorcyclists, prioritisng visibility, awareness, and protection. Helmets, high-visibility clothing, and respect for road rules should be as standard for e-scooter riders as they are for any other two-wheeled vehicle.

The city has taken strides to educate all road-users on the reasons they need to stay safe. However, personal responsibility among riders is equally critical.

It’s time for e-scooter users to view safety not as an option but as an essential survival tactic. We want everyone, regardless of their mode of transportation, to take theirs and others lives seriously on the road.

A JOURNEY TO IMAGINATION

T&FME meets Iwona Blecharczyk’s to hear about her journey from teacher to trailblazer

in the Trucking World. Stephen White writes

Iwona Blecharczyk, a Polish lorry driver, YouTube sensation, and the visionary founder of Imagination Transport, has forged an extraordinary path in the male-dominated trucking industry.

Known to millions online as the “Trucking Girl,” Iwona’s journey is an inspiring tale of resilience, ambition, and an unyielding passion for the open road. During the Allison Transmission visit, T&FME had the chance to sit down with Iwona to delve deeper into her career and her journey to becoming one of the industry’s most influential figures.

Iwona’s entry into trucking was far from typical. Originally a teacher, she

struggled to find her way in an industry with no family connections to guide her.

“My dream was to be a truck driver, but my parents were teachers,” Iwona recalls.

Her first steps into the profession were challenging — sending out hundreds of CVs, facing countless rejections, and enduring six months of relentless job searching before finally landing her first role in 2011. Despite offers for office-based roles within the company, Iwona’s heart was set on driving.

“I wanted to drive these big trucks, to hit the road,” she says, capturing the ambition that would propel her career forward.

Her initial position allowed her to gain valuable experience with standard curtain-

sided trailers and exposed her to the basics of transport logistics. From there, Iwona explored various areas within the transport sector, including air cargo logistics and temperature-controlled transport, taking her all across Europe. “It was a huge company, and I got to change departments and learn new things,” she notes. Her determination to continuously evolve and challenge herself led her to specialise in heavy-duty transport.

A life in oversized transport

By 2016, Iwona had found her niche in oversized transport—a specialisation that fulfilled her desire for adventure and mastery of unique skills. She began working for a

company that handled heavy-duty, oversized cargo, such as wind turbine blades. “I was transporting blades approximately 66 metres long across Europe,” she explains. This was a pivotal moment in her career, allowing her to handle complex cargo that few truckers dared to manage. Yet, true to her nature, Iwona was always seeking the next level.

“I had this big dream that made me become a truck driver in the first place— to drive American trucks on American highways,” she recalls. In 2018, she seized the opportunity to move to Canada, initially driving standard rigs across Canada and the U.S. However, the pull of oversized, high-risk cargo called her once again, leading her to pursue one of her most thrilling experiences yet—hauling goods on Canada’s infamous ice roads.

Conquering Canada’s Ice Roads

Transporting goods on the ice roads to remote diamond mines in Canada marked one of the highlights of Iwona’s career. “The average temperature was around minus 40 Celsius, with wind chill making it feel like minus 70,” she recounts. Equipped with boots designed for temperatures as low as minus 100 degrees, Iwona faced extreme conditions that tested her endurance and skill. The experience, though challenging, was deeply fulfilling. “Driving on the ice roads was my dream come true,” she says,

FROM THE ICE TO IMAGINATION

After a year in Canada, Iwona returned to Europe, but her time abroad had changed the way she would perceive how her career would work out

adding that it allowed her to witness the spectacular Aurora Borealis every night.

During her time on the ice roads, Iwona also learned invaluable survival skills. She recalls how she became adept at chaining up her truck quickly — something she had never done during her six years driving in Europe.

“On the oil fields, the roads were so greasy that I had to chain up the truck every day,” she explains. Working in the wild, surrounded by vast forests and wildlife, Iwona embraced the rugged side of trucking, an experience that would shape her resilience and confidence as a driver.

After a year in Canada, Iwona returned to Europe, but her time abroad had

I try to use my social media to talk about important matters, like working conditions”

THE BIRTH OF TRUCKING GIRL

Iwona launched her YouTube channel in 2013, Trucking Girl, where she shared insights into her life as a truck driver.

changed the way she would perceive how her career would work out. “It took me two years to find the courage to start my own transport company,” she admits. In 2021, after a decade of working in various transport roles, Iwona founded Imagination Transport — a name, she says, that was inspired by the dreams that had driven her career. Starting her business from scratch was no easy feat, especially without substantial financial backing. She recalls living on the road and surviving on minimal income during the company’s early days.

Yet, with perseverance, Iwona expanded her company, eventually adding a heavy-duty 4-axle truck with a 750-horsepower engine and a 7-axle trailer capable of carrying loads up to 120 tons. Today, she uses this truck to transport a range of heavy cargo, from wind turbine components to military equipment, across Europe. “When fully loaded, my truck can weigh up to 120 tons,” she says proudly. Her work requires a high level of technical skill and coordination, especially when handling extendable trailers that can stretch an additional 17 metres to accommodate oversized loads.

The Rise of “Trucking Girl”

Iwona’s influence extends far beyond the physical roads she travels. In 2013, she launched her YouTube channel, Trucking Girl, where she shared insights into her life as a truck driver. Her engaging personality and behind-the-scenes look at the trucking world quickly gained her a massive following. Over time, she expanded her social media presence to platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, amassing millions of followers. Iwona’s online popularity has allowed her to bridge the gap between truck

drivers and the general public, inspiring young women to enter the industry.

In 2019, her efforts were formally recognised when she received the “Barbie Shero” award, an accolade honouring women who serve as positive role models. Iwona’s social media presence has not only boosted her career but also provided her with a platform to discuss critical issues within the trucking industry. “I try to use my social media to talk about important matters, like the working conditions drivers face on the road,” she says. Her advocacy has resonated with fans around the world, positioning her as a powerful voice in the industry.

Pioneering in a MaleDominated Industry

Throughout her career, Iwona has continually challenged stereotypes and expectations. Trucking, particularly in specialised fields like heavy-duty and ice road transport,

BLUSMART UAE: THE FIRST

SIX MONTHS

BluSmart arrived in the UAE promising to pioneer mobility in the UAE, Sreejith Hrishikesh looks back on the launch with T&FME

Since launching on June 1, BluSmart has set a precedent in the UAE as the country’s first fully electric ride-hailing service. Starting up operationsduring the summer — a traditionally slower period for many businesses in the UAE — was a calculated decision that, for now, seems like paid off. “The lean season worked well for us,” Sreejith Hrishikesh, Country

Head of BluSmart UAE tells T&FME, before explaining that it provided time to understand operational complexities such as traffic patterns, travel times, and, most importantly, charging logistics. “It was an invaluable period that allowed us to refine our service processes, experiment with new ideas, and set a foundation for efficient operations.”

Starting ‘small’ has allowed BluSmart to scale gradually while building a base

There’s been a lot of love for BluSmart”

of satisfied customers. The company recently reached a milestone of 5,000 trips, accumulating over 71,000 “clean kilometres”—a term BluSmart uses to describe emissions-free travel—saving an estimated 6.8 tons of CO₂ in just six months.

Sreejith proudly notes that BluSmart UAE has achieved a customer satisfaction rating of 4.96 out of 5, surpassing even the company’s already high rating in India. “Every trip is rated, and we

monitor feedback closely to maintain high standards,” he shares. The team responds proactively to any rating below 5. Even a 4 is a cue for improvement.

“Our drivers and support teams take immediate action to address any issues, reinforcing our commitment to quality.”

For BluSmart, customer satisfaction isn’t just about comfort; it’s about building long-term relationships. In addition to high ratings, BluSmart closely monitors repeat business and customer loyalty, focusing on building a customer base that values sustainable and premium service. “Repeat customers and high ratings are not just numbers; they are signs that we’re on the right track,” Sreejith emphasises.

Data-Driven Operations

Technology is at the core of BluSmart’s service, enabling the brand to adapt its operations to the UAE’s unique requirements. From optimising routes to managing charging schedules, BluSmart leverages a range of digital tools and algorithms that streamline operations.

“We’re able to monitor trips almost in realtime,” Sreejith explains, noting that this data helps the team make informed decisions onthe-fly and optimise the efficiency of its fleet.

One innovation that stands out is BluSmart’s strategy for charging. Unlike conventional fuel-dependent fleets, electric vehicles require structured charging schedules. “We’ve ensured that our charging infrastructure is in place before expanding our fleet,” Sreejith highlighted, adding that BluSmart operates a centralised charging model where vehicles are charged during low-demand periods. This strategic charging not only keeps the fleet ready for peak times but also supports cost-effective operations.

BluSmart is also experimenting with a “pay-as-you-go” charging model in specific cases, where vehicles are allowed to charge at third-party stations when far from BluSmart hubs. “This flexibility has been valuable, allowing us to balance cost-effectiveness with operational efficiency,” Sreejith says. Coupled with a real-time approach to monitoring and trip optimisation, they have made BluSmart’s service more adaptable and reliable.

BluSmart’s fleet, composed entirely of electric vehicles, is at the centre. Sreejith explains that BluSmart currently operates with Audi e-tron models, selected for

their performance and premium feel.

“The e-trons have been excellent in terms of customer feedback and operational performance,” he comments. Designed for fast charging, these vehicles can operate almost continuously, a crucial factor for BluSmart’s near 24/7 fleet activity.

The e-trons have been tested rigorously over the past months, especially during the UAE’s peak summer temperatures. “We were curious to see how the batteries would hold up, but they’ve performed brilliantly without any noticeable degradation,”

Sreejith notes. He sees the early success of the e-trons as a testament to BluSmart’s commitment to quality and sustainability, and the company plans to introduce more models in the coming months to cater to a broader spectrum of customers.

BluSmart’s strategic mix of B2B and B2C services has been instrumental in driving its growth. While individual consumers form a significant portion of its customer base, corporate clients have provided consistent business. “Our partnerships with hotels and event venues have helped build visibility and attract high-value customers,” Sreejith shares. The company has also received organic interest from local businesses eager to partner with BluSmart, reinforcing its reputation as a premium, eco-friendly alternative in the transportation sector.

For BluSmart, the B2B market is not just about revenue; it’s an opportunity to establish itself as a trusted brand among leading businesses. “The inbound interest from corporate clients is promising,” Sreejith says, noting that the organic growth reflects a genuine demand for sustainable, premium mobility options in the UAE.

BluSmart’s UAE operations have allowed the team to test innovative strategies, some of which are now being applied in India. For example, the company’s use of premium electric cars in the UAE has inspired a similar approach in its Indian

We’re showing the market that an electric fleet can operate efficiently at scale”

markets, ensuring consistency in BluSmart’s brand image. “We’re also learning from the UAE’s fast adoption of new tech, which has informed some of our processes back in India,” Sreejith shares. Interestingly, while BluSmart is a leader in India’s EV mobility space, the UAE’s infrastructure and market dynamics have presented unique challenges and opportunities. The team has had to adapt to the UAE’s relatively nascent EV infrastructure, pushing BluSmart to innovate and adjust its operations. This two-way exchange of insights has enriched BluSmart’s global strategy, enabling it to optimise operations across both regions.

As a fully electric fleet, BluSmart has encountered challenges with charging infrastructure, a relatively new concept in the UAE. However, Sreejith views this as an opportunity for BluSmart to set the standard in EV fleet operations. “We’re showing the market that an electric fleet can operate efficiently at scale,” he explains. BluSmart’s proactive approach—ensuring that charging infrastructure is set up before vehicle deployment — has enabled seamless operations and minimised downtime. BluSmart is also exploring different charging models to maximise fleet utilisation. By charging vehicles during non-peak hours, the company has been able to keep cars ready for the busiest times of day, demonstrating the operational flexibility that comes with a well-structured EV strategy. “Having control over our charging schedule is critical, especially in a market like the UAE, where demand peaks and road rules vary widely,” Sreejith remarks. In addition to traditional marketing, BluSmart has harnessed the power of social media and word of mouth to build its brand in the UAE. Many early customers, familiar with BluSmart from India, have shared their positive experiences online, driving organic interest. “There’s been a lot of love for BluSmart on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram,”

Sreejith notes. Rather than relying solely on influencer partnerships, BluSmart aims to grow its following organically, driven by customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The firm’s approach to social media focuses on authentic engagement rather than large-scale influencer campaigns.

“We want word of mouth to be a key driver, just as it was in India,” Sreejith shares. BluSmart has also seen inbound interest from potential B2B partners through social media, an indication that its brand awareness is growing steadily.

Scaling Up and Expanding

BluSmart has ambitious plans for the future, including fleet expansion within the UAE and potential entry into other Middle Eastern markets. The company aims to have around 2,000 vehicles in the UAE within a few years, targeting a 10% market share. “Our goal is to build a solid base here before moving to other cities like Abu Dhabi and eventually Riyadh,” Sreejith shared, emphasising the importance of sustainable, gradual growth.By refining its processes and infrastructure, BluSmart hopes to establish a scalable model that can be replicated across the region. “Our focus is on sustainable growth, ensuring

we’re prepared operationally before taking the next step,” Sreejith says.

Our focus is on sustainable growth”

BluSmart has meticulously built its brand as a premium service provider, and this commitment is evident in every aspect of the customer experience. From the luxury of Audi e-trons to the professionalism of its “driver partners” (a term BluSmart uses to underline its drivers), the company ensures a seamless,

high-quality experience. “Our driver partners are well-trained and dedicated to providing exceptional service,” Sreejith says.

With each milestone — whether it’s 5,000 trips, a new B2B partnership, or a high customer rating — BluSmart inches closer to its vision of becoming a leader in sustainable transportation in the Middle East. “It’s been very satisfying to see BluSmart’s growth in the UAE,” he reflects.

AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE

T&FME visits Allison Transmission’s Customer Experience Centre for a behind the wheel showcase of its automatic technology

Allison Transmission recently hosted a select group at its Allison Customer Experience Centre (ACE) in Szentgotthárd, Hungary. This sprawling 100,000-square-metre facility, featuring both a comprehensive driving circuit and a rugged off-road track, provided a unique opportunity to experience Allison’s cutting-edge automatic transmission technology firsthand. As Allison continues to expand its footprint, especially in the Middle East, this event underscored the steps the US brand is taking to ensure it keeps its edge at a time of great change in its industry.

The Middle East has become a pivotal market for Allison, with the company seeing a steady increase in the adoption of automatic transmissions across various industries.

Muhammad Ibrahim Khan, Area Sales & OEM Account Manager for the Middle East & Pakistan, highlighted the region’s growing demand for these solutions, which align with the evolving needs of fleet operators. “The Middle East market is rapidly embracing the shift towards automatic transmissions, and Allison Transmission is well-positioned to meet this growing demand,” said Khan.

“We are witnessing a strong trend across the commercial industry, where fleet operators

The Middle East market is rapidly embracing the shift”

are recognising the significant benefits in total cost of ownership (TCO) from moving to fully automatic solutions. This transition isn’t just about convenience — it’s about efficiency, reliability, and long-term savings.”

Visitors to the ACE had the chance to see these benefits in action, starting with a side-by-side demonstration featuring two Scania P340 trucks powered by identical 340 hp engines. The only difference between the vehicles was their transmissions: while one truck was equipped with an Opticruise automated manual transmission, the other featured an Allison 3000 fully automatic transmission. The result? The Allison-

equipped truck quickly outpaced its counterpart thanks to its torque converter, which amplified engine torque and delivered a seamless acceleration advantage.

This hands-on comparison showcased the performance advantages of Allison’s technology, giving fleet operators a clear understanding of how automatic transmissions could enhance operational efficiency. This kind of adaptability is critical in the Middle East, where industries such as transport, waste management, and passenger transit require reliable, low-maintenance solutions.

The event continued with an array of vehicles designed to push the boundaries of Allison’s transmissions. One standout was the Iveco Powerstar EVO 3.2 Dakar Truck, a powerhouse equipped with a 1,000 hp Iveco Cursor 13 engine and an Allison 4000 transmission. Weighing 8,500 kg, under the unerring control of Gerard de Rooy this Dakar Truck demonstrated the durability and responsiveness of Allison’s transmission under extreme driving conditions, offering attendees a memorable high-speed experience.

The ACE facility also featured militarygrade vehicles that underscored the adaptability of Allison’s technology. The Komondor RDO 3221, a 17-tonne 4×4 scout vehicle manufactured by Gamma Technical Corporation, tackled the offroad track with ease thanks to its Allison 3200SP transmission. Despite getting briefly stuck in deep mud—an issue exacerbated by its smaller tires — the Komondor’s performance highlighted the reliability and adaptability of Allison transmissions, even in challenging environments.

At the IDEX 2023 trade fair, Czech company Excalibur Army signed a contract worth 47 million euros with Resource Industries from the UAE. The contract means the production and supply of more than two hundred vehicles with Tatra chassis for military and civilian purposes for the UAE market. During the event, the Tatra Defence Vehicle-bult Titus 6×6 armoured vehicle, equipped with a Cummins 10.8-litre engine paired with an Allison 3000 transmission, showcased its capability on rough terrain, climbing muddy inclines with ease. Built on a Tatra chassis, the Titus has a gross vehicle weight of 23 tonnes and provides Level 4 protection, further proving Allison’s effectiveness in heavy-duty applications requiring both power and control.

The Customer Experience Centre

showcased the versatility of Allison’s transmission technology across a range of civilian and military vehicles. Among them, two Mercedes Zetros models demonstrated the dual-use potential of Allison-equipped vehicles. The Zetros 2051 AK, powered by a 520 hp engine with an Allison 4500SP transmission, and the slightly lighter Zetros 1833A, featuring an Allison 3000SP transmission, both performed admirably on the ACE track. These vehicles underscored the adaptability of Allison’s transmissions for both rugged and urban environments, highlighting how this technology meets the needs of Middle Eastern fleets that operate across

The adoption of fully AT is accelerating”

diverse terrains and conditions. This versatility is key for Allison as it looks to expand in the Middle East, where demand for automatic transmissions is spreading across sectors.

“From buses transporting millions of pilgrims during the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia to waste collection vehicles ensuring cleaner cities, and distribution trucks maintaining stock levels of essential goods, the adoption of fully automatic transmissions is accelerating across diverse sectors,” Khan explained. “We expect the trend to continue its upward trajectory as more operators see the value of Allison’s technology in enhancing their operations.”

THE MCB WAY

As Mineral Circles Bearings celebrates four decades in the Middle East, Managing Director Hassanein
Alwan reflects on the company’s journey from humble beginnings to a significant industry player

Mineral Circles Bearings (MCB) has expanded its Middle East team from just two employees in 1984 to over 120 today, a testament to its consistent growth and strong network of partnerships across the region. Managing Director Hassanein Alwan, with a background in aeronautical engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and a business and marketing diploma from the University of Cambridge, has brought a holistic approach to guiding Mineral Circles Bearings.

In this exclusive Q&A, Alwan shares insights into the strategies that have defined Mineral Circles Bearings’ growth, the

technological shifts reshaping the industry, and his vision for the future. Reflecting on the company’s journey, he speaks passionately about the importance of adaptability and forward-thinking in an evolving landscape influenced by trends such as artificial intelligence and big data. Alwan’s emphasis on structured planning and a customercentric approach continues to drive the company forward, ensuring that MCB remains well-positioned to meet the changing needs of the power transmission in-dustry.

Congratulations to Mineral Circles Bearings for the 40 years milestone, how does that make you feel?

This is a significant milestone for the company. We are proud of our past

Witnessing

achievements and excited about the future.

Witnessing our growth from two people in 1984 to over 120 today is remarkable. The company now impacts thousands through its sales network and part-nerships, which fills us with immense pride.

Beyond business growth and milestones, what vision and values would you say got the company where it is today?

As a company, we plan and operate in a structured manner with a forward-thinking approach. We focus on planning for the future and fostering a culture that is inclusive and supports individual differences.

We call it the MCB way; straightforward and well structured, support and respect

the individual differences. We are always forward thinking, reliable and trustworthy

With rapid technological advancements, how have customer expectations evolved, and what innovative approaches has Mineral Circles Bearings adopted to meet these new demands, especially in product development and customer service?

To stay at the forefront of the market, companies must continuously evolve. We have established a new Research and Innovation (R&I) department to push our limits and keep us ahead. Recognising rapid changes in customers and the market, we aim to adapt swiftly. Instead of focusing on competitors, we strive to be the best version of ourselves, ensuring continuous evolution and reinvention. The market will naturally address our competitors, so our focus remains on our progress.

How has the landscape of the industry changed since Mineral Circles Bearings was founded, and what do you believe will be the next big change? The power transmission industry is influenced by major market trends, such as the Internet of Things, sustainability, social media, big data, and AI. These trends impact our business both directly and indirectly. We foresee the B2B market adopting traits of the B2C market, with customers expecting more personalised and immediate interactions. This requires us to adopt agile, customer-centric approaches. AI and sustainability will play crucial roles in shaping the industry’s future. AI will transform our processes, from product development to customer service, enhancing efficiency and anticipating market needs. Sustainability will drive responsible innovation, ensuring our growth aligns with environmental and social well-being.

As you reflect on the past 40 years, what are some lessons learned that you believe are essential for future leaders in the industry?

One fundamental lesson we’ve learned is the importance of resilience and perseverance. Don’t be afraid to take bold decisions. It is a marathon, not a sprint. Plan well, push consistently, and keep looking forward. Don’t get distracted by everything around us. Keep the focus, as small consistent steps can make a big difference over a period

of time. There is no magic but to work smarter and harder than everyone else. Another critical insight is that success is built on a foundation of strong values and a clear vision. For future leaders in the industry, embracing change while staying true to core principles is essential. The ability to adapt and pivot in response to market dynamics, techno-logical advancements, and evolving customer expectations is what will set apart the leaders of tomorrow.

How is Mineral Circles Bearings engaging with and empowering the next generation of professionals in the industry to embrace sustainability and innovation?

Maybe I have mentioned it earlier. We have the R&I team, a team full of young bright minds that are not afraid to say and do things differently. We also bring interns and young professionals to engage in our discussions and help the business evolve. Innovation and sustainability are just part of what we do in this department. This empowers the younger generation to grow, evolve, and bring changes. These young minds work directly

We strive to be the best version of ourselves, ensuring continuous evolution and reinvention”

with top man-agement, bridging the gap and getting things done in no time.

As the industry evolves, what do you see as the biggest opportunities for innovation within Mineral Circles Bearings, and how do you plan to leverage them?

We are working in a very traditional business that primarily operates through conventional transactions. However, digitalisation is becoming the new normal, and we aim to leverage this shift to provide customers with 24/7 support and service.

We also believe that our 40 years of accumulated data represents a veritable goldmine that we must explore and utilise. By employing advanced AI technologies, we can unlock valuable insights from this data, driving innovation and enhancing our decision-making processes. These changes will not only improve efficiency but also help us better meet the evolving needs of our customers in real-time.

TAKING A LEAP FORWARDS

Powered by government spending, the data suggest the GCC’s commercial vehicle market is turning to technology, Glasgow Consulting Group (GCG)’s Vishal Pandey reports

The commercial vehicle market in the GCC region has shown substantial growth, driven by several critical factors, including evolving customer demands, emerging market trends, regional characteristics, and robust economic conditions.

A recent analysis by Glasgow Consulting Group (GCG) valued the market at $13.7 billion in 2023, with a projected Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.6% from 2023 to 2028. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) currently dominate the market, making up 55.5% of total sales in 2023, a trend expected to continue due to their versatility and efficiency for various commercial applications.

According to GCG director Vishal Pandey a key driver of growth is the GCC region’s strong economic expansion, fuelled by the construction, oil and gas, and tourism sectors, coupled with supportive government policies and infrastructure investments.

“Consumer demand in the GCC favours commercial vehicles that prioritise reliability, durability, and fuel efficiency, characteristics that are highly valued in sectors such as construction, oil and gas, and retail,” says Pandey. “The shift away from an oil-dependent economy has encouraged governments to diversify into sectors like manufacturing, retail, and tourism, further boosting the need for commercial vehicles to support this development.

“Additionally, the rise of cold chain logistics, essential for sectors like pharmaceuticals and perishable goods, has heightened the demand for specialised vehicles with temperature control capabilities. Infrastructure projects, including investments in seaports, airports, roads, and logistics hubs, are critical components of the GCC’s development plans, amplifying the demand for commercial vehicles designed to support these initiatives efficiently.”

Rising fuel prices have also spurred an increased interest in fuel-efficient commercial vehicles, a trend aligned with the GCC’s strategic geographical position. Located near Europe, Asia, and Africa, the region serves as a crucial hub for international trade, where fuel efficiency plays a pivotal role in cost-effective logistics.

Moreover, government policies promoting eco-friendly vehicles have accelerated the adoption of electric and hybrid commercial vehicles. The rapid growth of e-commerce across the GCC further drives demand for LCVs, especially for last-mile deliveries, as more goods are transported directly to consumers.

Technological advancements in areas such as automation, IoT, and data analytics are – despite some ‘scepticism’, increasingly integrated into fleet management, offering businesses greater operational efficiencies and improved asset tracking, notes Pandey.

Despite these growth factors, the GCC commercial vehicle market faces several challenges. The unique climate and terrain in the region necessitate commercial vehicles equipped with high ground clearance, all-wheel drive, and heavy-duty suspension to navigate harsh conditions. Additionally, the volatility in oil prices presents a challenge, as fluctuations impact vehicle demand, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on fuel. The market is also marked by intense competition among manufacturers, making it difficult for individual companies to capture significant market share. Increasingly stringent emission norms and safety regulations add to the complexities, as companies must continuously adapt their vehicles to meet new requirements, which can drive up costs.

Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the leaders in the GCC commercial vehicle market, especially within the truck segment, which includes pickups, light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty trucks. Key industries such as manufacturing, construction, retail, and transportation drive the demand for trucks in these countries. Economic reforms and diversification initiatives in KSA and UAE have accelerated this growth, with both countries heavily investing in infrastructure and logistics to support their expanding economies.

Technological advancements, particularly in telematics, have significantly impacted the commercial vehicle market in the GCC. Although telematics faced initial resistance due to high installation costs and limited awareness, it has now become a major selling point as fleet owners recognize its benefits.

“Initially, telematics services faced scepticism in the market, as many potential users were unfamiliar with the

technology, which hindered its acceptance. Additionally, the installation costs posed a challenge to demand,” Pandey expands. “As trucks regained their foothold in this sector, telematics emerged as a crucial factor in driving vehicle sales.”

Telematics allows fleet operators to monitor vehicle performance, track locations, and manage fleet status in real-time, offering insights into areas such as fuel consumption, emissions, and driving distances.

“Long-haul truck drivers often travel across the GCC to deliver goods for the logistics and construction industries. Vehicle telematics enables fleet managers to track vehicles accurately, providing details such as truck speed, load, and tachograph data. Given that fuel consumption is a major concern during long journeys, telematics simplifies the monitoring process and identifies potential savings,” says Pandey.

“Fleet managers can access precise reports on driving distances, emissions, and fuel consumption, along with timely updates on vehicle status to ensure optimal performance. Easy-to-understand alerts provide information on issues, odometer readings, engine hours, and more. Due to its numerous advantages, telematics has become a key selling point for truck manufacturers. Transport companies are actively integrating telematics into their

fleet management systems, with 50-60% of customers currently benefiting from this technology in their heavy-duty fleets.”

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has mandated telematics for heavy vehicles to reduce accidents, enhance safe driving practices, and minimise environmental impact. Few sectors are having to take sustainability more seriously than waste management.

“For example, municipal trucks involved

in waste management are now equipped with telematics systems to streamline waste collection and management,” Pandey explains. “Utilising advanced IoT-based devices, waste bins are outfitted with sensors, creating a highly integrated system that allows for effective monitoring, management, and transportation of trash bins, drivers, and vehicles.”

The electric commercial vehicle (EV) market in KSA and UAE is poised for significant growth due to supportive government policies and private sector investment.

“Driven by government support, private investment, and favourable policies, new models and technological advancements are fuelling demand,” says Pandey. “Electric trucks featuring cutting-edge technologies such as telematics, GPS, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and IoT are driving the growth of commercial electric vehicles. Additionally, numerous manufacturing companies are channelling investments into the electric automotive sector to enhance battery efficiency for long-distance performance and to develop improved technologies, paving the way for superior electric vehicles in the years ahead.”

While light and medium electric commercial vehicles from European and Japanese manufacturers lead this sector, the demand for long-haul heavy electric

trucks is hindered by current battery limitations. However, manufacturers are investing heavily in research to enhance battery efficiency and performance for long-distance transport, which is essential for the GCC’s logistics needs.

As economic diversification continues, the demand for highperformance trucks across sectors such as construction, manufacturing, retail, and logistics will likely sustain. Although high production costs remain a barrier to the adoption of electric trucks in the commercial sector, advancements by leading automotive innovators like Tesla, GM, and Volvo promise to shape a cleaner, more efficient future for the region’s commercial vehicle market.

“Environmental concerns and regulatory compliance are driving the commercial vehicle sector towards electrification. Light and medium electric commercial vehicles are already available, with European and

Japanese brands leading the market,” continues Pandey. “However, meeting the power demands of long-haul heavy electric vehicles remains a challenge. As such, Manufacturers are investing heavily in electric automotive research, focusing on: advancing battery technology for efficient long-haul performance and developing improved electronic vehicles. This concerted effort is expected to transform the region’s electric vehicle landscape.”

With a renewed focus on drivers, market challenges, and technological shifts, the future of the GCC commercial vehicle market will be one of strategic importance to the regional economy.

“As GCC governments pursue economic diversification and invest in construction, food and beverage, manufacturing, retail, and transportation, high-performance trucks will remain in high demand due to their heavy-load capacity.”
