SAYING GOODBYE TO THE MAN THAT TOOK ON FORD – AND WON
Beyond his business achievements, Ratan Tata was deeply admired for his upstanding character and humanitarian spirit. Known for his humility, integrity, and unwavering commitment to ethical business practices, he was a role model for countless entrepreneurs and professionals. His emphasis on putting people first and fostering a culture of inclusivity and innovation resonated not only within the Tata Group but across the entire business community.
One of the most memorable anecdotes that reflects Ratan Tata’s resilience and determination comes from his experience with Ford. In the late 1990s, when Tata Motors was struggling with its passenger car division, Ratan Tata sought to sell the business to Ford. During the meeting in Detroit, Ford executives reportedly dismissed the idea, questioning Tata’s capability in the automotive sector and suggesting that the company was doing him a favor by considering the acquisition. Ratan Tata left the meeting feeling humiliated but determined.
Less than a decade later, fortunes reversed. In 2008, during the global financial crisis, it was Ford that found itself in trouble. In a turn of events, Ratan Tata led the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) from Ford, saving the storied British brands and turning them into one of the most profitable ventures of Tata Motors. The acquisition is now hailed as a masterstroke, transforming JLR into a global luxury powerhouse. The story not only highlights Ratan Tata’s tenacity but also his commitment to building a global legacy
for the Tata Group with grace and vision. The world bade farewell to Ratan Tata, the notable visionary leader, industrialist, and philanthropist, who passed away at the age of 87 in early October. As the former Chairman of Tata Sons, Ratan Tata’s legacy spans industries and continents, but his impact on the commercial vehicle sector and his strong ties with the UAE remain particularly significant. Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, Ratan Tata went on to lead the Tata Group, steering one of India’s most influential conglomerates through a period of remarkable growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Tata Motors evolved into a global force in the automotive industry, known for its high-quality commercial vehicles that serve as the backbone of transportation and logistics in many regions around the world. His guiding vision was instrumental in the development of iconic vehicles such as the Tata 407 and Tata Ace, which helped revolutionised transportation in India and beyond. Ratan Tata’s connection to the UAE was both personal and professional. A frequent visitor to the region, he built enduring relationships with key industry leaders and governments in the Gulf. Under his leadership, Tata Motors made significant inroads into the Middle Eastern market, contributing to the modernisation of the region’s commercial vehicle fleets. His efforts helped cement the Tata brand as a trusted name in the UAE, providing reliable and efficient transport solutions that have become a familiar sight on the roads of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and beyond.

Autonomous driving technology leader WeRide has announced a strategic partnership with Uber, the world’s largest mobility and delivery platform, to introduce self-driving vehicles on the Uber platform in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The partnership will initially launch in Abu Dhabi later this year, marking a major step in the evolution of autonomous mobility in the region.
Through the agreement, a dedicated fleet of WeRide autonomous vehicles will be integrated into Uber’s app, allowing riders in Abu Dhabi to select a WeRide vehicle when booking a trip. Riders using the Uber app will have the option to experience a self-driving vehicle, a first for the platform in the region. The partnership, however, does not include plans for expansion into the United States or China at this stage.

In July 2023, the company was awarded the UAE’s first national license for self-driving vehicles, allowing it to test and operate its fleet on public roads nationwide. This new partnership with Uber will further cement WeRide’s presence in the UAE’s mobility landscape.
Tony Han, Founder and CEO of WeRide, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are honored to partner with Uber to bring our autonomous technology to a global audience. We aim to provide affordable, sustainable, and safe mobility solutions, starting in the UAE.”

A BIG LEAP
Sinotruk says it has gone from ‘Zero to Hero’ as it shines at IAA 2024
On 17th September 2024, the IAA Transportation exhibition in Hannover, Germany, became the stage for the latest innovations in the commercial vehicle industry and T&FME is looking at some of the biggest stories from the event in this issue. Certainly, Sinotruk, a major player in this field, made a grand impression with its striking showcase themed ‘Zero to Hero’. In total, the Chinese brand presented seven advanced models, reflecting its commitment to green, intelligent, and efficient transport solutions. Sinotruk’s stand at the exhibition captured attention and highlighted its vision of a sustainable future for transportation.
The Yellow River Hydrogen Tractor
One day before the official launch of IAA 2024, Sinotruk unveiled its upgraded Yellow River hydrogen internal combustion engine traction tractor. This model stands out with a remarkable drag coefficient of 0.286, setting a new benchmark in the field of
commercial heavy trucks. This achievement, which pushes the boundaries of low drag coefficient technology, earned a Guinness World Record by covering 4,871 kilometres with a single tank of fuel while fully loaded.
The design of the Yellow River hydrogen tractor-head is inspired by the shape of water droplets. Its streamlined cab narrows at the front and widens towards the rear, providing a base for ultra-low wind resistance. Measuring 2,150 mm at the front and 2,500 mm at the rear, the cab’s water droplet shape is complemented by a trailer designed with a bionic ‘fish back’ concept to further enhance drag reduction. The model integrates over 20 active and passive drag reduction technologies, such as an active air intake grille, electronic rear-view mirrors, hidden door handles, and fluid guidance throughout the vehicle.
These advancements help the truck achieve its record-breaking drag coefficient, enabling a 15% reduction in energy consumption.
‘Zero to Hero’ was central to Sinotruk’s presence at IAA 2024”
Beyond the Yellow River hydrogen tractor, the 7-strong lineup featured the SITRAK hydrogen fuel cell tractor, the HOWO Commander pure electric light truck, and the Bolden pickup. These models cater to various segments, including heavy trucks, light trucks, new energy vehicles, and pickup trucks, reflecting Sinotruk’s extensive product range and robust market presence.
The SITRAK hydrogen fuel cell tractor is equipped with electric drive axles, this model boasts a range of up to 450 km. Its three-motor configuration delivers a power output of 825 kW and a maximum torque of 75,000 N·m, with a transmission efficiency exceeding 94.5%, ensuring exceptional performance for long-haul logistics.
The HOWO Commander Pro new energy light truck was another standout model, featuring a 100 kWh mid-mounted blade battery pack. This light truck can recharge from 20% to 80% in just 20 minutes, offering a peak power output of 140 kW. Its two-speed integrated electric drive axle boosts torque

output by 50% while reducing overall energy consumption by 10%, making it an efficient solution for urban and regional deliveries.
Sinotruk’s Bolden pickup, a rising star in the company’s lineup, is equipped with the Weichai Power WP2H2.0 T diesel engine, delivering a peak power of 140 kW and a maximum torque of 420 N·m. It features Sinotruk’s self-developed 8AT transmission and incorporates six advanced technologies, including an innovative AdBlue dual injection system. These features enable the Bolden pickup to perform reliably even in extremely cold conditions, starting instantly at nearly -40°C, and maintaining power without sacrificing speed or torque.
The theme ‘Zero to Hero’ was central to Sinotruk’s presence at IAA 2024, symbolising the journey from zero-emission technology to impactful new technology. Drawing from the ‘drop of water’ concept, which reflects the emission-free nature of hydrogen energy, Sinotruk’s exhibit embraced the symbolism of water as the source of life in ancient oriental culture. This theme underscores the company’s belief that small actions can collectively drive significant change. By
advancing towards global low-carbon and zerocarbon targets, Sinotruk aims to contribute to the green industry ecosystem and lead the charge towards a more sustainable future.
Sinotruk’s story began in 1956 as China’s first manufacturer of heavy-duty trucks, laying the foundation for the country’s commercial vehicle industry.
It gained national recognition with the creation of the HUANGHE branded JN150 8-ton truck in 1960, marking a historic milestone as China’s first heavy-duty truck. In 1983, Sinotruk made another leap forward by introducing the STEYR heavyduty truck project from Austria, becoming the first Chinese company to integrate foreign truck manufacturing technology.
Following a significant reform and restructuring in 2001, Sinotruk transformed into a leading conglomerate known for research, development, and manufacturing in the heavy-duty truck sector. The company’s assets were listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2007, while its collaboration with German MAN Group in 2009 saw MAN acquiring a 25%+1 stake in Sinotruk (Hong Kong) Limited. This strategic

partnership has been pivotal in enhancing Sinotruk’s technological capabilities. Today, Sinotruk is headquartered in Jinan, Shandong province, and stands as the third-largest truck manufacturer in China. Its global presence extends across various markets, including South America, Pakistan, and the Philippines, where it has built manufacturing plants and established key partnerships. Sinotruk’s history is marked by continuous innovation, such as its development of the HOWO and SITRAK models, integrating advanced technologies from global leaders like Volvo and MAN.

As is now tradition at IAA in Hannover, Scania arrived at its corner of the event to set out its own compelling vision for the future of sustainable transport, emphasising its advances and technology in electric trucks, smart urban mobility, and the strength of its ‘Super-based’ powertrains.
Leading the presentation, CEO Christian Levin, Head of Communication and Sustainability Camilla Dewoon, Head of Sales and Marketing Stefano Fedel, and Head of Commercial Operations Mats Gunnarsson, each shared their perspectives on Scania’s strategies and goals for a cleaner, more efficient transportation ecosystem.
Opening the press conference, Christian Levin set the tone by reflecting on Scania’s progress since the last IAA event. “It is truly great to be back,” he remarked, emphasising how much has been achieved in just two years.
He highlighted Scania’s unwavering commitment to a fossil-free future for heavy commercial transport, saying, “We have made significant steps towards a fossil-free future for heavy commercial transport. We have adopted our entire value chain from our suppliers all the way out to our workshops and dealers.”
Levin underscored Scania’s readiness to deliver a world-class electric truck that meets the needs of various sectors, including heavy-duty applications. “We’re ready to deliver what is the world’s best electric truck for nearly all applications and all segments,” Levin stated, highlighting its versatility, from handling “heavy-duty tippers in mining” to managing “cold, arctic conditions.”
The company’s investment in a new battery assembly factory in Sweden reflects its determination to lead the transition. Levin shared ambitious goals for the future, targeting 50% battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales by 2030. He also spoke about the charging infrastructure Scania is building to support this shift, including plans for 40,000 charging points.
“What all customers ask for when transitioning to battery electric vehicles is charging—not on the highway but at the depot and at the destination,” he explained. This approach aims to address one of the primary barriers to widespread electric truck adoption: convenient and efficient charging solutions.
Levin also acknowledged that the transition to electric mobility faces challenges that require broader industry support. “The transformation is going too slow,” he admitted, calling for help from policymakers to make
progress in charging infrastructure and green electricity production. “This is doable, but we need your support,” he urged.
Sustainability at every level?
Camilla Dewoon, Head of Communication and Sustainability, expanded on Scania’s holistic approach to sustainability, describing how the company has integrated environmentally responsible practices into every aspect of its operations.
“Sustainability for us is not only a strategy; it is really something that is implemented into all our targets and into all our actions,” she emphasised. Dewoon highlighted Scania’s recent accolade, the 2024 Gold Medal from the independent EcoVadis assessment, which recognised the company for its leadership in environmental performance, human rights,

and sustainable procurement practices.
A key part of Scania’s sustainability efforts involves reducing the environmental impact of its packaging materials. Dewoon elaborated: “In our parts logistics, we have made a life cycle analysis and looked upon packaging material. This analysis made us decide to move away from 100% plastic in our void fill materials to 100% recycled and recyclable paper.”
This decision not only has a positive environmental impact but also benefits Scania’s employees through improved ergonomics, she claimed.
She also pointed to Scania’s progress in reducing emissions from vehicle materials, targeting low-carbon steel, batteries, and aluminum by 2030.
“In 2030, you will see from our European operations that we have low carbon emissions for all steel, batteries, aluminum, and cast iron,” Dewoon noted. This shift aims to reduce emissions beyond just tailpipe reductions, ensuring that Scania’s vehicles have a lower total lifecycle impact.
Modular electrification
While manufacturers may often scrap to claim they created or invented a notable this or that in the industry, Scania is definitively the pioneer of using modular production.
Stefano Fedel, Head of Sales and Marketing, highlighted Scania’s advancements in electrification and the flexibility provided by its much-vaunted system of design and manufacture.
MODULAR APPROACH
Scania’s modular approach means electric solutions from urban distribution to regional and long-haul applications can be tailored to match fleet requirements.
he explained, “Our message here today is not to go for the highest energy but to go to the energy that is really needed for the transport operation to maximize the payload.” He detailed how Scania’s new long-haul electric tractors, equipped with batteries under the cab and along the frame, provide flexibility to customers with powertrain options ranging from 270 to 450 kW.
Fedel emphasised the benefits of Scania’s modular system, which allows the company to adapt its offerings to diverse customer needs.
“Through the modular system, we were able to cover all transport needs with different packs, different driveline options, including different axles and different cabs,” he said.
This flexibility extends Scania’s electric

regional and long-haul applications, enabling customers to find tailored solutions that match their operations, he said, while also acknowledging that the pace of industry electrification varies across regions, with some countries facing infrastructure challenges.
“We know that in some countries, the lack of charging infrastructure and the difficulties in accessing the grid can slow down the transition,” he noted. As a solution, Fedel pointed to Scania’s continued investment in alternative fuels, such as biodiesel and biogas, which offer viable low-carbon options for markets not yet ready for full electrification.
Mats Gunnarsson, Head of Commercial Operations, discussed Scania’s approach
to digital services and their role in supporting customers throughout the electrification journey.
“The future is electric, but we know that even these state-of-the-art battery electric trucks need service and support to stay at peak performance,” Gunnarsson remarked. He introduced two new digital tools designed to improve operational efficiency: the ProDrive app and Scania Services 360.
The ProDrive app, a digital tool for drivers, aims to make eco-driving more engaging and effective. “ProDrive is an app that will help drivers save fuel and CO2, bringing eco-driving into the gaming world,” Gunnarsson explained.
“By allowing drivers to compete with each other on fuel efficiency, the app incentivizes better driving practices and reduces environmental impact. “Drivers can compete with their fellow drivers in the same fleet or even across different fleets,” he added, with a smile, “but that wouldn’t be fair to the other brands, I think.”
Scania Services 360 offers a comprehensive approach to service packages, allowing customers to customise their support needs. “It’s a way where we can even further modularize and simplify our service offering,” Gunnarsson noted.
By offering everything from maintenance
and repair to financial services and connected services, Scania ensures that operators have access to the tools they need to maintain uptime and reduce costs.
“These innovations bring real benefits for our customers, making them more efficient and more profitable,” he emphasized.
A Shared Vision
Throughout the press conference, the Scania leadership team highlighted the importance of partnerships in achieving their ambitious sustainability goals.
“We don’t do this alone. We team up in partnership with customers, suppliers, transport buyers, energy suppliers, and even competitors to succeed,” Camilla Dewoon stated, emphasizing the collaborative nature of Scania’s approach.
Christian Levin echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for collective action to achieve the industry’s transformation. “I call out for firm commitments inside and outside of our industry,” he said.
He urged policymakers and stakeholders to work together, particularly in the development of green electricity and charging infrastructure, to make the shift to battery electric trucks more viable. “This industry is at a critical point. We need to take some decisive decisions,” he remarked.
In addition to their focus on electrification, Scania’s leadership also highlighted the potential of biofuels as a bridging solution.
RAPID ADVANCES
“Look at that beautiful truck down there – the biofuels option is the perfect bridging solution available here and now, both for biofuels and for biogas,” Levin pointed out, emphasising that such solutions can help reduce emissions in markets where electrification may be slower to take hold.
Scania’s vision for heavy transport
As the conference drew to a close, Christian Levin reiterated Scania’s confidence in its path forward. “We continue to believe that the future of heavy commercial transport is battery electric,” he affirmed. “Scania is ready, together with all our customers, to lead this transition with the greatest loading capacity, the fastest charging, and with the by far best driving experience in the world of heavy commercial trucks.”
This vision, supported by a strong commitment to innovation, digital services, and collaborative partnerships, positions Scania as a key player in shaping the future of sustainable transport.
With a comprehensive range of solutions—spanning from cuttingedge electric trucks to industry-leading services — Scania is not just preparing for the future; it is actively building it. This diversified approach is designed to meet the varied needs of the transport sector while advancing towards a fossil-free future.
Modern heavy-duty trucks are highly sophisticated, equipped with over 100 sensors that continuously generate vast amounts of data—up to 20 gigabytes per minute. Volvo’s Head of Data, Analytics & AI, Robert Valton, sees this as an opportunity rather than a challenge: “With our data science expertise and advanced analytical methods, we can extract deeper insights into a truck’s behaviour and better understand how to optimise transportation for our customers.”
Since the first connected trucks were launched in the 1990s, the use of data has evolved dramatically. Volvo Trucks now applies AI and machine learning to predict and prevent breakdowns, improving uptime for fleet operators. By identifying patterns in data, Volvo can proactively alert workshops to potential issues, allowing for timely repairs and avoiding unplanned breakdowns. This approach has proven effective, with 77% of alerts successfully preventing unplanned downtime.
AI-Enhanced Trucks
Looking ahead, Volvo is exploring how AI can further enhance the capabilities of connected trucks. With AI, more data analysis could be conducted directly onboard the vehicle, allowing trucks to diagnose and resolve issues autonomously. “It would almost be like a cognitive and self-healing truck that can optimise uptime and reduce climate impact,” says Valton.
In addition to their advancements in electric vehicle technology, Volvo Trucks is introducing new services aimed at simplifying the charging process for electric truck operators. The recently launched Charging Management service allows transport companies to manage private charging at depots efficiently. This service helps ensure that trucks are fully charged when needed, reducing unplanned charging sessions and enhancing productivity.
Moreover, Volvo Open Charge, introduced last year, has made public charging more predictable and accessible. The service enables operators to locate, book,
and pay for charging at partnered stations, with further enhancements on the way, such as the ability to pre-book charging times.
Expanding low-CO2 emission steel
Volvo Trucks is also taking strides in reducing emissions through the materials used in truck manufacturing. Following the introduction of low-CO2-emission steel in its electric trucks in 2022, Volvo is expanding this to all driveline models starting next year. Produced by SSAB, the steel is made from recycled materials using fossil-free energy, reducing CO2 emissions by approximately 80% compared to conventional steel.
By incorporating low-CO2-emission steel into the frame rails of around 12,000 trucks, Volvo estimates that it will save

6,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalents in 2025. As availability increases, Volvo plans to use this steel in more models and explore lower-emission alternatives for other materials such as aluminium and plastics. Volvo Trucks’ ambitious goals and recent innovations underscore its position at the forefront of the transport industry’s transition to sustainable and zero-emission solutions. From next-generation electric trucks with unprecedented range capabilities to leveraging data and AI for smarter operations, Volvo is driving the change towards a greener, more efficient future. With the introduction of low-CO2-emission materials and new charging solutions, the company is proving that it is not just keeping pace with change — it is leading it.
