TWO OLD MEN TAKE A HISTORY TRIP

In a rare quiet afternoon at our offices this month, my fellow scribe Jason Saundalkar and I disappeared down some old pictures of Dubai going back 30-plus years. Cue: two old men getting dewy eyed at shots of empty beach roads and sand traps around the city’s iconic World Trade Centre building.

Jason and his family represent thousands of other shared histories of generations of Indian and South East Asian families that have put down roots and forged links between their home country and their adopted home. I mention this as in this issue, we feature an in-depth look at Tata Motors’ significant presence and impact in our region, underscoring a partnership that has been built on mutual respect and shared goals.

The history of automotive collaboration between the Middle East and India is another rich tapestry woven with threads of progress, resilience, and visionary leadership. For decades, Indian automotive giants like Tata Motors have been instrumental in shaping the commercial vehicle landscape in the Middle East. It is a flourishing relationship, thanks to the complementary strengths and shared ambitions of both regions.

Tata Motors, one of the leading automotive players in India, is playing its own pivotal role in this journey. Since its entry into the Middle Eastern market, Tata Motors has consistently demonstrated its commitment to providing innovative and reliable mobility solutions tailored to the unique needs of our region. From robust trucks to versatile buses, Tata Motors’ vehicles

have become synonymous with durability, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology.

The August issue of Truck & Fleet Middle East highlights Tata Motors’ remarkable journey in the region. Over the past five decades, Tata Motors has not only introduced state-of-theart vehicles but also set new benchmarks in areas such as total cost of ownership, performance, functionality, connectivity, and safety. The company’s unwavering dedication to sustainability and innovation has made it a trusted partner for businesses across the Middle East.

In our cover story, we delve into the Indian giant’s comprehensive range of commercial vehicles, meticulously engineered to cater to the diverse requirements of markets in the UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar. From the flagship Tata Prima platform to the versatile Tata Ultra trucks, these vehicles are designed to meet the complex demands of various industries, including construction, logistics, and urban deliveries.

In some ways, Tata Motors and its fellow Indian flagbearers like Ashok Leyland, Eicher, and others, typify one of the great stories of the region, namely the contribution of the subcontinent to the remarkable foundation of the modern Middle East. As we celebrate this shared automotive history, it is essential to recognize the broader context of this collaboration. The Middle East and India share deep-rooted cultural ties and economic partnerships that extend beyond the automotive sector, and this issue, in its way, pays homage to that spirit of cooperation and mutual growth that defines our relationship.

GFH RAISES FINANCING IN THE US

LOGISTICS

GFH Partners Ltd has successfully launched and closed its seventh logistics and industrial fund in the United States. Keeping with GFH Partners’ thematic investment approach, the Fund comprises two types of assets: industrial and transportation logistics. With a total transaction value of US$300 million, the Fund’s portfolio includes 25 industrial and transportation logistics assets in more than seven locations across the US.

The Fund’s transportation logistics assets are comprised of around 20 small to medium sites used for truck parking/ servicing, sorting and fulfilment of goods, and electric vehicle battery charging, loading/unloading, and transportation worker facilities. They are 100% occupied and spread across 600 square feet of rentable area leased to the likes of SRS Distribution, Steiner, AT&T, and Penske. Industrial assets within the Fund include six Class A, newly built mission-critical properties. The assets are well-diversified in terms of location, space usage, and tenant base with long-lease terms and investment grade occupants such as Tesla, Teleflex, Tower Health, and UGI Energy Services. The industrial real estate sector has shown to be very resilient in challenging times including the pandemic and high inflationary and interest rate environments. Supported by strong demand from continued e-commerce, manufacturing, as well as nearshoring/offshoring of a variety of production facilities to North America, the sector, unlike other real estate asset classes, has the potential to continue displaying strong growth in key metrics largely driven by the positive market fundamentals and growing demand for industrial space. Given the limited supply in the market and low vacancy rates, the sector is prevailing across the US.

RENTAL A ‘PRACTICAL WAY’ TO SAVE ON COSTS

CAR RENTAL

As summer temperatures soar in the UAE, incidents of tyre bursts and engine overheating become more frequent, posing significant risks for drivers. Vehicle maintenance is crucial to prevent such accidents, yet the rising costs of car ownership − especially maintenance and parts − can be daunting. In response, SelfDrive.ae, the Middle East’s largest mobility tech platform, advocates car rentals as a practical and economical solution, potentially offering a 100% saving on maintenance costs.

Car ownership comes with numerous hidden expenses, with maintenance and repairs being a major component. Routine servicing, unexpected repairs, and the cost of replacement parts can accumulate quickly, often catching

car owners off guard. Renting a car shifts these financial responsibilities to the rental company, offering a worry-free alternative. “By opting to rent a car, consumers can avoid the unpredictable costs of maintaining or servicing a vehicle. Our customers enjoy the convenience of a wellmaintained car without the hassle and expense of upkeep. This allows them to allocate their resources

more efficiently,” said Soham Shah, CEO of SelfDrive.ae. SelfDrive.ae manages all maintenance at dealership levels, including routine services like oil changes, tyre rotations, and brake inspections, as well as covering unexpected repairs. It frequently updates its fleet with new models, ensuring clients have access to the latest vehicles.

EMX ‘CAN’ REVOLUTIONISE GCC E-COMMERCE

EMX consolidates shipments to the GCC region, allowing enterprises to utilise Dubai as a gateway and optimise their logistics. EMX efficiently handles first mile to last mile journeys, including customs clearance, ensuring remarkable transit times of 2-4 days for customers. This new service is in line with 7X’s strategic

plans to enhance its service capabilities and extend its reach. To deliver a better customer experience, EMX has partnered with a network of reputable courier service providers across the GCC. This partnership ensures high quality service levels, including strong customs clearance processes, specialised infrastructure (such as geographic coverage, fleet and manpower), and use of cutting-edge technologies. Tariq Al Wahedi, General Manager of EMX, commented: “We are delighted to launch the ‘EMX International,’ the latest product to be rolled out following the launch of EMX. This represents a significant step forward in our mission to further cement our posi-tion as a leading provider of CEP services. EMX is committed to customers’ convenience and reshaping the logistics landscape with an eye on future advancements and expansion. With EMX, the future of logistics is within reach, and it is more connected than ever.”

A FAMILY FUN DRIVE

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport keeps the Japanese brand ahead of the SUV competition

There are some people that would argue that the Pajero Evolution that came out ‘hot and hotted’ from Mitsubishi’s support of the Dakar Rally back around the beginning of noughties is the original Super SUV. Long before this golden era for SUVs where Porsche and Bentley can muddle about with KIA and BMW in the segment, you simply wanted an SUV because you needed space and capability.

But, then, along came the Pajero Evolution and it’s 3.5l V6 mounted on independent suspension and drivers suddenly had performance and handling – and the rest was history.

Well, not exactly. Sadly, barely a few thousand were made and the name Pajero – along with its other guises as the Montero and Shogun – has continued to be synonymous with more considered and sensible priorities for the car buyer.

However, T&FME had the pleasure

One of the Montero’s strongest suits is its off-road prowess”

of testing the Mitsubishi Montero Sport, a midsize SUV that offers a combination of rugged off-road capability and refined on-road manners, last month and for the right driver and wallet it should hit the sweet spot between their daily commute and the odd week-end adventure.

The mid-size segment is being rapidly stuffed by new competition particularly from Chinese brands such as Geely, Chery and Haval that come packed with modern features and performance to rival

car-makers like Mitsubishi. However, the Montero Sport comes with its own set of temptations even as a family-friendly set of wheels, including being equipped with a robust and snorting 3.0-liter V6 engine that produces 215 horsepower and 285 lb-ft of torque – not quite the 276hp and 256 lb-ft of torque delivered by that Pajero Evolution but still mighty close when factoring in modern car design.

In fact, it is an engine which provides more than enough power for highway cruising and off-road excursions. The 8-speed automatic transmission, meanwhile, ensures smooth shifting, enhancing the driving experience. The Super Select 4WD-II system is a standout feature, offering multiple driving modes to tackle various terrains, from mud and sand to snow (!!) and rocks.

One of the Montero Sport’s strongest suits is its off-road prowess and where it is likely to score against its rivals in the Middle East. With a high ground clearance of 8.5 inches and a wading depth of 27.6 inches, it’s well-prepared for challenging terrains. The vehicle’s body-on-frame construction adds to its durability and toughness, making it a reliable choice for off-road enthusiasts. The rear differential lock also further enhances traction on slippery surfaces.

Inside, the Montero Sport offers a spacious and comfortable cabin. The materials used are of high quality, and the layout is driver-centric. The leather seats are supportive and adjustable, ensuring comfort on long drives. The third-row seating provides additional passenger capacity, though it may be a bit tight for adults on longer journeys. The cargo space is ample, and with the third row folded down, it becomes even more generous.

The Montero Sport also comes equipped with a range of modern technology features. The infotainment system includes an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, allowing seamless smartphone integration. The 360-degree camera system is particularly useful for navigating tight spots and enhancing overall safety. Additional features include keyless entry, push-button start, and a multi-zone climate control system.

Safety is a key consideration for any family-oriented SUV, and the Montero Sport doesn’t disappoint. It includes advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane

de-parture warning, and forward collision mitigation. The robust build quality and multiple airbags pro-vide an added layer of protection in the event of a collision.

While the Montero Sport excels in many areas, its fuel efficiency is average for its class. It offers around 7.2 km/l in the city and 9.8 km/l on the highway. This is decent for a vehicle with such strong performance and off-road capabilities but may be a consideration for those prioritising fuel economy.

It’s a great choice for families and adventure seekers alike”

VERDICT

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport is a wellrounded SUV that excels in versatility, offering a balance of performance, comfort, and off-road capability. It’s a great choice for families and adventure seekers alike, providing a reliable and enjoyable driving experience both on and off the road. While it may not be the most fuel-efficient option in its class, its strengths in other areas make it a compelling choice for those in need of a robust and versatile vehicle.

Mitsubishi is now introducing an all-new next-generation model of the Montero Sport for 2025 in some markets. In the UAE, the Montero Sport is currently available in its refined current look and is offered in three variants.

THE RACE IS ON

Evocargo’s autonomous trials success puts the UAE into a global competition to make driverless T&L a reality

Arace is on globally to see which market can turn the potential of autonomous transport and logistics into a practical reality. Last month, the UAE entered this global competition to pioneer autonomous logistics, with Dubai South successfully completing the first phase of its autonomous vehicle trials with Evocargo. It’s a milestone, that marks the UAE’s own determined effort to position itself among the leading nations in the race to modernise transportation.

Dubai South is the largest single-urban master development focusing on aviation, logistics, and real estate and over the early part of the summer hosted potentially historic trials in its Logistics District. During testing, Evocargo’s unmanned electric truck, the Evocargo N1, was put to the test on a predefined route in a controlled environment.

The trials aimed to rigorously validate the truck’s hardware, software, and reliability in real-world scenarios involving interactions with other vehicles and pedestrians.

The Evocargo N1 was tested for its ability to detect objects, prevent accidents, avoid collisions with moving obstacles, and execute emergency stops. The truck’s autopilot system was also put through various manoeuvres, including parking and turning, all without a hitch. This flawless performance underscores the promise of a future where autonomous vehicles are integral to logistics operations.

Evocargo prepared a detailed report on the trial results, spanning two stages. In the second stage, the Evocargo N1 excelled in performing freight transportation tasks on a standard route, demonstrating high validation standards in mixed traffic environments.

Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of the Logistics District - Dubai South, tried to capture the

The trials follow Einride, a freight mobility company known for its digital, electric, and autonomous technology, entering into a joint cooperation with the Integrated Transport Center (ITC) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) to scale the electrification of road freight throughout the region. This collaboration aims to build out the Abu Dhabi portion of the Falcon Rise Grid, a significant component of a broader regional project.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will see the deployment of Einride’s full freight mobility offering across Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. This includes 1,000 electric heavy-duty trucks, but also 100 autonomous vehicles, and strategically placed charging infrastructure, all optimised with the AI-powered freight operating system, Einride Saga. The initiative supports the DMT’s goal of decarbonising road freight transport by 30% by 2030.

The Falcon Rise Grid, developed over five years, will stretch 550 km across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah, encompassing a total of 2,000 electric trucks, 200 autonomous trucks, and eight charging stations with over 500 charging points. Einride’s freight ecosystem, planned, optimised, and monitored using the Einride Saga platform, will simplify road freight management, remove industry inefficiencies, provide uninterrupted operations, and significantly reduce emissions within the region.

A Global Phenomenon

The autonomous truck industry is experiencing a resurgence globally, with record-setting delivery numbers. Companies across Asia, Europe, and the United States are vigorously

pursuing commercialisation testing, driven by the need to reduce transportation costs and optimise TCO. By 2044, the global trucking fleet is expected to include an additional half a million L4 autonomous drivers, transitioning human drivers to supervisory roles or work in less developed regions.

The competition to commercialise autonomous trucking is fierce, with each market striving to be the first to deploy these advanced vehicles at scale. technological, and logistical challenges In China, firms like Inceptio and DeepWay are spearheading the mass production and commercial delivery of autonomous trucks. These firms are leveraging their vertical integration and dominance in the supply chain to accelerate deployment. The Chinese freight industry, facing significant safety and labour challenges, stands to benefit immensely from autonomous technology. The high accident rates

and insurance costs present a strong incentive for rapid adoption of autonomous trucks, which promise to enhance safety and efficiency.

In Europe, Einride is excelling with its L4 level commercial operations. The company focuses on establishing high-quality fixed routes for autonomous transport, meticulously planning routes and setting up necessary infrastructure. Einride’s “Grids” network in the UK, Norway, and Sweden addresses fleet optimisation, tractor swaps, and battery management. This method ensures that L4 autonomous trucks operate efficiently on dedicated routes, maximising their potential and reliability. In the US, despite regulatory hurdles, companies like Kodiak and Aurora are making significant strides in test mileage. These companies are at the forefront of autonomous technology, conducting extensive road testing to refine their systems.

IDTechEx identifies two main pathways to commercialising autonomous trucks. The first involves a gradual upgrade from Level 2 (L2) to Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving systems. Companies like Inceptio are enhancing in-vehicle systems from L2 advanced driver assistance systems to L4 fully autonomous systems. L2 systems provide immediate benefits by reducing driver fatigue and enhancing safety, paving the way for L4 capabilities. In China, this approach allows carriers to reduce the number of drivers from two to one on longer routes, significantly improving efficiency and safety.

A second pathway focuses on establishing high-quality L4 fixed routes for unmanned transportation. Companies are pioneering this approach by setting up pre-planned routes and auxiliary facilities to ensure smooth operations. Einride’s “Grids” network in the UK, Norway, and Sweden addresses fleet optimisation, tractor swaps, and battery management, creating a seamless system for autonomous transport. This method ensures that L4 autonomous trucks operate efficiently on dedicated routes, maximising their potential and reliability.

As the race intensifies, regional leaders emerge, each with unique strengths. In China, Inceptio and DeepWay leverage their vertical integration and supply chain dominance to maintain leadership. In Europe, Einride excels with its highly integrated platform overseeing fleet operations and energy management. Kodiak and Aurora continue to push the envelope in the US. The successful trials of autonomous trucks in Dubai South symbolise more than just technological achievement; they show the Middle East is also ready to lead the way.

GETTING USED TO IT

AutoData Middle

East’s new report backs up what the used market knew already: it’s booming

The UAE’s used car market is witnessing unprecedented growth, setting the stage for a transformative decade ahead, a new report from AutoData Middle East has claimed.

Valued at $20.15 billion in 2022, this market is projected to nearly double by 2030, reaching an impressive $48.15 billion. This growth is driven by an 11.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), reflecting the increasing demand for preowned vehicles among UAE consumers.

Several factors contribute to the robust growth of the used car market in the UAE. One significant driver is the rising preference for GCC-spec vehicles. According to AutoData Middle East, a subsidiary of the World Automotive Group (WAG), 74% of used car market participants seek vehicles

specifically designed for GCC conditions. These vehicles are built to withstand the harsh climate and driving conditions prevalent in the region, making them highly desirable.

Another critical factor is the price sensitivity of buyers. AutoData’s research indicates that the most sought-after used cars fall within the AED 20,000 – AED 30,000 price range, followed by vehicles priced between AED 50,000 – AED 80,000 and AED 150,000 and above. The recent flooding in April 2024 has also introduced a new price bracket of AED 30,000 to AED 50,000, driven by the increased demand for replacement cars.

The market is also witnessing a shift towards hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs), driven by rising fuel prices and a broader transition towards sustainable mobility. Demand for EVs increased by 33% in 2023, reflecting a growing interest in eco-friendly options. This

trend aligns with the UAE’s commitment to green mobility through initiatives like the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to increase the adoption of EVs and hybrids.

Likewise, the used car market in the UAE witnessed its own record growth in 2023, with dubizzle Cars reporting that the platform was experiencing a bump for used car buyers and sellers.

The last dubizzle Pre-Owned Car Market Report 2023 indicated that the uptick in the demand for used cars was accompanied by a simultaneous increase in available inventory – ie. more and more people are circumventing the traditional retail channel and turning to selling their vehicles

As Haider Ali Khan, the CEO of dubizzle and the Head of dubizzle Group MENA, said earlier this year: “The broader context of the UAE’s pre-owned car market growth

in 2023 reflects a compelling narrative. The market has witnessed an unprecedented surge in demand, driven by factors such as shifting consumer preferences, strategic government policies and continuous improvements in traffic systems and infrastructure.

While sellers may be dipping into selling via online marketplaces, distributors are also moving rapidly into the space, hoping to develop a solid stream of income. For instance, Al-Futtaim Automotive, one of the UAE’s largest automotive groups, recently revealed it had crossed another successful milestone in the pre-owned car segment, selling over 25,000 used vehicles in 2023.

Leveraging over 23 years of “trust, expertise and reliability”, Al-Futtaim Automotive believes it is setting an “unparalleled standard of excellence” across its used-car operations that covers Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles from its brand portfolio as well as its own multi-brand used-car business, Automall.

In the latest business figures shared by the used-car division of the distributor, SUVs dominated the market at 48% sales, followed by sedans at 29%; while the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Prado took the top three spots as the best-selling models in their used car portfolio. Amongst its brands, Toyota and Honda ranked first in terms of residual value, with Prado, Yaris, and RAV4 models being the most in demand.

remains strong among UAE consumers. Brands like Toyota and Nissan lead the market, accounting for 32.8% and 19.2% of the demand in 2024, respectively. In the luxury segment, German brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW dominate, with the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 5-Series being particularly popular. The Lexus LS-Series and Porsche 911 also maintain significant demand.

The integration of advanced technologies like the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) in luxury cars has enhanced their appeal. Features such as autonomous driving and smart safety systems

FIGHTING INACCURATE EVALUATIONS

are becoming more prevalent, making used luxury cars an attractive option for buyers Despite the growth, the market faces challenges such as the potential for inaccurate car evaluations due to missing trimline information. To address this, AutoData Middle East has launched its Vehicle Report platform, providing comprehensive vehicle histories, accurate valuations, and detailed damage reports based on Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs). This tool helps buyers and sellers make well-informed decisions, enhancing market transparency and confidence.

As the used car market grows, so does the demand for competitive car insurance premiums. Over the past six months, AutoData Middle East recorded over 12 million vehicle insurance queries, indicating the critical role of insurance in the vehicle ownership experience. The launch of AutoData’s Claim Hub B2B platform has further streamlined the claims process, benefiting both insurers and consumers.

The future of the UAE’s used car market looks promising, with substantial growth expected over the next decade. Sebastian Fuchs, Managing Director of AutoData Middle East, reflects this optimism: “We are witnessing a transformative period in UAE’s used car market. At AutoData Middle East, we strive to enhance market transparency and confidence in the sector. Our solutions will support consumers with well-informed decision-making and navigate complex market conditions.”

According to AutoData Middle East, the market faces challenges such as the potential for inaccurate car evaluations due to missing trimline information.

MINDS OVER

MATTERS

T&FME listens in as the CEO of Daimler Truck and E.ON sit down to talk the future of the energy transition

In the latest episode of Transportation Matters, the CEO podcast of Daimler Truck, Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Truck AG, engages in a profound discussion with Dr. Leonard Birnbaum, CEO of the international energy group E.ON. The conversation delves into the crucial topic of transitioning to a CO2-free economy, emphasizing the foundational role of green energy.

The regular podcast is worth your time as the discussion encapsulates the dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape of green energy and transportation, emphasising the importance of infrastructure, flexibility, and proactive investment. The insights from Martin Daum and Dr. Leonard Birnbaum provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the journey towards a sustainable future.

Daum begins by reflecting on the industry’s historical challenges in predicting the future. He notes, “Our industry traditionally has always been wrong when anticipating ten years forward what the world will look like. Always. We have always been wrong.”

This acknowledgment sets the stage for a conversation centered on the uncertainties and evolving dynamics of the energy and transportation sectors.

Daum stresses the importance of green energy for achieving a sustainable economy and transportation system. He introduces Birnbaum, highlighting E.ON’s critical role in shaping the energy transition in Germany and Europe. Birnbaum, with a PhD in engineering and extensive experience in the energy sector, shares his insights on the journey towards decarbonization.

Birnbaum recounts his entry into the energy industry, driven by his fascination with large-scale machinery and the prospect of significant industry transformation. He recalls starting his career in a lignite mine, where he was captivated by the scale of the operations and the people involved. “I love the people. I really love the miners. They’re just great guys,” Birnbaum says, highlighting the human element of his early career. He continues, “I truly enjoyed it. I love the machinery, and I was fascinated by the large scale of it, because we are a large-scale industry.”

Birnbaum’s early career coincided with the industry’s transition phases, from coal to oil, then to nuclear, gas, and eventually renewables. He explains, “Our industry,

every 25 years, was basically reinvented. In the 20s of the last century, we went for pulverized coal for the first time. Then after the Second World War, we really went for oil. In the 70s, after the oil crisis, we went for nuclear. At the end of the last century, we went for gas and in Germany, lignite.”

According to Birnbaum, the significant shift towards decarbonization began after the Kyoto Protocol and gained momentum with the introduction of the emission trading scheme around 2005. He notes: “The decarbonisation journey with renewables and everything that goes with it really maybe started 2005 when we introduced the emission trading scheme.”

Birnbaum further elaborates on the continuous evolution within the energy sector, stating, “We had energy transitions before. But the decarbonisation journey with renewables and everything that goes with it really maybe started 2005 when we introduced the emission trading scheme.”

Daum and Birnbaum discuss the broader implications of decarbonization, including the electrification of various industries. Birnbaum mentions that around 2015, it became clear that the energy sector would need to support the decarbonisation of other industries, such as transportation and heating. He emphasises the rapid pace of change and the necessity for the energy sector to adapt.

“The fact that whole industries are coming our way, you know, e-cars, EV cars, and that maybe even e-transport comes, which ten years ago we really didn’t believe. Everybody told us it would be hydrogen, fuel cells, whatever, and now we’re looking at e-transport also on the truck side,” Birnbaum explains.

Birnbaum highlights the critical role of infrastructure in the energy transition. He explains that while adding renewable energy sources was initially the focus, the current bottleneck lies in the infrastructure needed to support these sources. This includes the capacity of the grid and the need for significant investments in grid reinforcement.

“We are moving in the energy transition from a phase in which we had to focus on the supply side, it was all about adding renewables, towards a phase in which the crucial bottleneck is really the infrastructure,” he states.

Daum illustrates the scale of the challenge by comparing the energy requirements of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations to those of small towns. He describes

the need for extensive grid upgrades to support the increasing number of EVs, particularly heavy-duty trucks. Birnbaum concurs, noting that connecting highcapacity charging stations to the existing grid requires substantial reinforcement and planning. He says: “If I need to build now 400 such charging stations along the German highways to have one every 60 or whatever kilometers, that for me is the equivalent of 400 times 15,000 people materializing out of nowhere, so to say, in Germany.”

Birnbaum acknowledges the difficulties of planning infrastructure ahead of demand. He explains that traditionally, investments in grid infrastructure required proof of necessity, making it challenging to build anticipatory capacity. However, this paradigm is shifting, and there is now a greater emphasis on proactive investments to support future needs.

“We now try to do what we call anticipatory investment. We assume that in a certain area there will be so much wind and so much truck charging, and therefore we assume that based on this we will need so much high-voltage lines,” he explains.

Both Daum and Birnbaum emphasise the importance of collaboration between the energy and transportation sectors. Birnbaum suggests that fleet operators should consider installing charging points at depots and that charging networks should be non-exclusive and open to different

We now try to do what we call anticipatory investment”

brands. He also highlights the need for digital communication standards between the grid and vehicles to optimize charging behaviour and maintain system stability.

“We need to make sure that we also build standards for digital communications between the grid and the vehicles because we will certainly need to optimize the charging behaviour when it comes to these high capacities to keep the system stable,” Birnbaum asserts.

Birnbaum argues that flexibility in energy consumption can create economic opportunities. By providing flexibility

in charging times, truck operators can potentially access cheaper energy, creating a win-win situation for both the energy and transportation sectors.

This flexibility is crucial for managing peak demand and avoiding overloading the grid. “If the trucks and the grid talk to each other, this is a money-making opportunity for the trucks, because by providing flexibility, they might get very cheap energy, because flexibility will be valuable,” he suggests.

Daum envisions a future where every parking spot at a truck stop has a charger, allowing trucks to charge during mandatory rest periods. He suggests that this approach could provide the necessary flexibility for the grid while meeting the charging needs of truck operators. Birnbaum agrees that a mix of high-capacity and lower-capacity chargers could be beneficial, providing both rapid and flexible charging options. “So it’s probably a mix between 1 megawatt chargers and 300 kV chargers,” Birnbaum concludes.

Birnbaum outlines E.ON’s significant investments in grid infrastructure, which have doubled in recent years to meet the growing demands of the energy transition. He emphasizes that infrastructure requires money, time, resources, and regulation, with all four elements being critical to success. “Infrastructure needs money, time, permits and regulation. Need all four. So, infrastructure is really the bottleneck,” he asserts.

Martin Daum envisions a future where every parking spot at a truck stop has a charger, allowing trucks to charge during mandatory rest periods.

The discussion briefly touches on hydrogen as an alternative energy source. Birnbaum expresses skepticism about meeting the ambitious hydrogen targets set by the EU and German government by 2030, citing delays in project implementation and a lack of sufficient demand. Daum acknowledges the challenges but highlights the potential for hydrogen to play a significant role in decarbonising the transport sector.

“If you would have hydrogen, I would produce the trucks and we would have the demands. I have a couple of really large customers who would say, I buy from you 2,000, 3,000 hydrogen power trucks, but you have to provide me a five-year guarantee for the price of hydrogen and the supply of hydrogen,” Daum explains.

Throughout this insightful conversation, Daum and Birnbaum shed light on the complexities and challenges of transitioning to a CO2-free economy. They emphasise the need for collaboration, proactive investments, and flexible solutions to support the growing demands of the energy and transportation sectors. As the world moves towards a greener future, the insights shared by these industry leaders provide a valuable roadmap for navigating the uncertainties and opportunities ahead.

“When I read your resume and saw that you dedicated a lot of your life to the energy industry, I start thinking that when I was young, energy stocks were considered as stocks for widows and

Infrastructure needs money, time, permits and regulation”

orphans, meaning absolutely boring, you get dividend and nothing else happens. Why did you go into that sector?” Asked Daum.

“That was long before any transition was on the horizon. I have maybe two answers. One is I’m an engineer, so I never looked at a ‘stock’. I looked at the assets first and the assets were actually pretty cool. So I actually started in a lignite mine in Gadsweiler. That was my first touchpoint with the energy industry. And I love the people. I really love the miners,” said Birnbaum.

“They’re just great guys. And then the

second reason is I was wondering that if this industry is going to be deregulated, it’s going to be transformed tremendously. And for young people, this is an opportunity because if the industry is changing so much, it means that fresh minds, which have not a predetermined way of thinking, maybe have an advantage versus an experienced mind. So it’s a great place to be for a young person”

The CEO of Daimler Truck said he had a similar way into the trucking business – and is more than ever excited at its futures.

“Today it’s an absolutely exciting part because I would say we haven’t seen so much change like we see now in the last couple of years and upcoming years as we ever have seen in the history of our industry. But when did it start on the energy side? I remember on the trucking side, I would say 10, 15 years ago, we were always talking of energy efficiency, less diesel. But whenever the talk comes on battery electric truck or zero emission trucks, it was always clear that is so expensive, that is so out of the use case of our customers, that will be always an exotic afterthought. That was about 15 years ago. It has changed at a dramatic pace.” Transportation Matters and other related podcasts, such as E.ON’s Jetzt Machen, der Energiewende-Podcast, offer further exploration into the transformative changes shaping the future of energy and transportation. These discussions highlight the importance of staying informed and engaged with the ongoing developments in these critical industries.

As a leading regional trade fair for Malaysia’s automotive aftermarket for some 20 years, the platform brings international resources to the country, providing comprehensive services and solutions tailored to the evolving needs of its market. This year’s show marks a significant milestone, shifting from a biennial event to yearly in order to support Malaysia’s progress and growth in a rapidly transforming industry,” said Ms Chiew. Malaysia’s new vehicle sales grew by eight percent to 260,236 units in the first four months of 2024 compared to the corresponding period of last year. To keep pace with the market development, Malaysia’s automotive market is undergoing a transition driven by new energy vehicle development and technological advancement.

The nation’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) has also provided policy support for the growth of electric vehicle industry through governance, incentives, regulations and harmonisation of standards and more.

According to Chiew “Smart mobility, electrification, digitalisation and sustainability are guiding the transition of the automotive industry, while the uptake of electric vehicles is driving technological innovation and sustainable development.”

While there is progress, the transition in Malaysia is still also a work in progress. Reminiscient of the pilot schemes seen in the Middle East, large fleets, such as Swift Logisitics are trialling electric prime movers (tractor heads incombinations with semitrailers), but as one person told T&FME on

the sidelines, most of these schemes seem like PR exercises first and fleet purchases second.

It is a view that could be easily corroborated by taking a look at the exhibition. Sitting between the funk of the autoFEST@ KL and a conference line-up that was churning government targets into the potential for new energy vehicles in the market, the bookended exhibition filled half a dozen halls with transmissions, tyres and lubricants. Everything you have seen at Automechanika for years.

But of course, the automotive industry is having to face a growing demand for soft services as well as hardware. Meeting the demand for e-commerce, ridesharing and food delivery services, the Commercial Vehicle & Fleet Zone introduced parts & components solutions, tools for the maintenance of buses and trucks, as well as fleets like motorcycles, cars and light vehicles.

Elsewhere, the Automotive Repair, Maintenance & Care / Body & Paint / Accessories & Customising Zone will showcase a wide range of products, technologies and solutions in the aftermarket, including diagnostic and repair, equipment and tools, car wash, car care, detailing, oils, lubricants, body and paint, and replacement parts.

To equip participants with updated knowledge in the automotive aftermarket, the Collision Repair Training Workshop introduced the Whole Vehicle Training Platform, which invited industry experts to share their in-depth insights into the market. For example, ESnet Academy offered a detailed overview of electric vehicle systems, diagnostics and efficiency, while ISQ and 3M explored topics related to PPE as well as body and paint.

From hardware to services, EVs to classic cars, in many ways Automechanika KL summed up an industry at a crossroads.
