FMS 2024: PROGRESS IS STILL PROGRESS

This summer’s Fleet and Mobility Middle East Summit 2024 once against showcased the region’s progress in catching up with the global mobility sector. By embracing AI, telematics, data analytics, and sustainable practices, the Middle East is playing its part in driving the future of mobility, and it was great to be able to sample what that future may look like.

Post-COP28, there should be genuine questions asked about whether the region is being proactive enough, but the event certainly highlighted – and it was worth pointing out that these events can be a case of preaching to the converted – that there are many fleets and manufacturers out there that are willing to pick up the sustainability baton.

It is clear after the event that the business cases and technologies for fleets are becoming much broader and accessible to operators in the market. That doesn’t mean that it is always financially viable for many fleets to transition to a greener set of vehicles or an AI-powered overhaul currently. It is just much closer than it was. Let’s call that progress.

As the mobility sector continues to evolve, the region’s role as a leader will only grow stronger. The insights and trends discussed at the summit underscore a region that is not just

adapting to change but actively shaping the future of mobility. The Middle East is on the cusp of a mobility revolution, and it’s thrilling to witness this transformation firsthand.

As usual, the event provided a comprehensive overview of the current trends, challenges, and innovations shaping the future of the fleet and mobility industry in the Middle East. It became clear to me that the Middle East is not just a participant in the global mobility sector but has an opportunity to be leader in a new era of technological advancement and sustainable practices. If it chooses to accept facing up to the investment in infrastructure over the next decade that is still required.

One of the standout moments for me was the keynote by Jeferson Felipe Machado from UD Trucks Middle East. His vision of AI transforming mobility services resonated deeply. The idea that AI can shift us from traditional fleet operations to smart logistics solutions isn’t just futuristic – it’s happening now.

The Middle East, with its robust programme of infrastructure development and forward-thinking policies, is uniquely positioned to harness these advancements. AI’s role in predictive maintenance, operational efficiency, and datadriven decision-making is set to revolutionize how we manage fleets.

A JAC FOR THE TRADES

TThe robust and ready JS6 looks like a great

he fleet and car rental markets are always changing, and the JAC JS6 is here to shake things up. JAC Motors, known for their reliable vehicles, introduces the JS6, blending practicality, efficiency, and modern tech. Let’s dive into what makes the JS6 a great option for fleets and car rentals in the Middle East.

JAC cars are now readily available through a number of rental outlets in the UAE via the Habtoor Motors-owned franchise and the newest JS6 could be the best of the lot.

As the fleet and car rental markets continue to evolve, the introduction of the JAC JS6 late in 2023 into these sectors signifies a much more robust addition tailored for professional use than the less premium models such as the JS4. JAC Motors, is earning a reputation

for a diverse range of dependable vehicles, in the ever-increasing ranks of internationalfacing Chinese brands in the market.

In the JS6, JAC has a winning combination of practicality, efficiency, and modern technology. While it may not trouble the upper performance of similar cars in its segment, it is no slouch under power and has the functional utility and finish needed for professional fleets and car rental services in the market.

A lot of reviews have focused on the Chinese brand’s so-called “Aesthetic of the Times” design language, but what does that mean in practice? Well, clear your head of the jargon and focus your attention on its narrow LED light band and rugged front end.

The rear isn’t lacking either, with 3D-style lights, a stylish roof spoiler, fullwidth LED taillight, dual tailpipes, and

The JS6 is versatile and can adapt to different fleet needs”

bold black plastic trim on the bumper. The 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels and shiny trim from the door mirrors to the rear of the C-pillars add to its appeal.

Though it might not be the trendiest SUV out there, the JS6’s design will catch the eye of anyone who likes the JS4 but needs a bigger ride. It’s 4,605 mm long, 1,890 mm wide, and 1,700 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm – that’s 100 mm longer than the JS4.

Step inside, and you’ll see the JS6’s cabin is a big upgrade from the JS4. It’s cleaner, more modern, and packed with tech. The materials feel premium with stitched effects and cool patterns on the door pads and speakers. There are metallic and faux leather trims, a fancy touch-sensitive HVAC panel, paddle shifters, and a rotary transmission knob with a knurled finish. The front seats

A SMOOTH RIDE

are sporty and well-bolstered, and the dual-pane sunroof makes the cabin feel spacious. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the rear seats offer more legroom and plenty of storage cubbies for added practicality.

The JAC JS6 is loaded with features that today’s drivers expect. Think automatic climate control, power front seats with memory and heating, an 8-speaker audio system, wireless charging, automatic wipers, LED headlights, an electric tailgate, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety is key for fleet and rental managers, and the JS6 delivers. It includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, frontal collision warning, blind-spot warning, rear parking sensors, 360-degree cameras, TPMS, and up to 6 airbags.

The JAC JS6 should be a wellrounded option for professional fleets and car rentals”

These features keep occupants safe and reduce potential liabilities for operators.

Under the hood, the JS6 has a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine that pumps out 181 hp and 280 Nm of torque. It’s paired with a 6-speed wet-clutch DCT gearbox driving the front wheels. It’s not a speed demon when driving, but it’s reliable and efficient, hitting 180 km/h if needed. This balance of power and fuel efficiency is perfect for fleet operators who want to keep costs down without sacrificing performance. The JS6 handles well in both city and highway conditions, ensuring a smooth ride for long-term use and rental customers.

The JS6 offers plenty of cargo space, making it great for various professional uses, from transporting goods to carrying equipment for service businesses. It’s versatile and can adapt to different fleet needs, whether for corporate

transportation, logistics, or rental services.

One of the best things about the JAC JS6 for fleets and car rentals is its cost efficiency. It’s priced competitively, offering great value for money. Plus, its low maintenance costs and fuel efficiency mean lower total ownership costs, making it a smart investment for businesses.

All in all, the JAC JS6 should be a wellrounded option for professional fleets and car rentals. It combines modern design, reliable performance, top-notch safety features, and cost efficiency, making it a versatile and practical choice. As the fleet and car rental markets grow in the Middle East, the JS6 is a great option for businesses looking to expand or upgrade their fleets. If you’re after a larger, more techsavvy version of the JS4, the JAC JS6 won’t disappoint. For a closer look, head over to an Al Habtoor Motors showroom in Dubai.

THE BEST WAY TO TRAVEL?

Ever wondered what it’s like to drive a massive, silent, eco-friendly beast through the urban jungle? Well, I got the chance to test drive a MAN Lion City E bus, and let me tell you, it’s as exciting as it sounds. Picture yourself in control of a zero-emission, passengerhauling machine that’s smoother than your morning coffee and quieter than a librarian on their day off. Here’s the lowdown on my joyride with this futuristic bus in Munich. First things first, let’s talk looks. The MAN Lion City isn’t just any bus; it’s the

T&FME takes the MAN Lion City E bus out on the track in Germany Safety is paramount in the design”

supermodel of the bus world. This baby’s got curves in all the right places, with a sleek, streamlined body that screams, “Look at me, I’m eco-friendly and I know it!”

The bus is designed to glide through city streets like a hot knife through butter. Inside, it’s all high-quality materials and thoughtful design. No cheap plastic that’ll crack after a few heavy-duty passenger runs. The seating is so comfy, you might mistake it for your living room couch. Plus, there’s plenty of standing room, because who doesn’t love a good bus ride where you’re not crammed in like sardines? Now,

let’s get to the fun part - driving this big boy. The Lion City E runs on an electric drivetrain, which means it’s smoother than a jazz saxophonist at a wine bar. The electric motors give you instant torque, so when you put your foot down, this bus moves. And I mean, it really moves. You can imagine navigating city traffic is a breeze; it’s like the bus is dancing around the other vehicles. Handling? You’d think a large bus would be like steering a brick through a maze, but no. This thing turns like a dream, with a tight radius that makes city corners feel like gentle curves. And let’s talk braking -

regenerative braking, to be precise. It not only stops you on a dime but also helps recharge the batteries, so you feel like an eco-warrior every time you hit the brakes.

For the passengers, the Lion City E is like a mobile spa day. Wide doors, low floors, and a climate control system that makes you forget the blazing sun or freezing winds outside.

The interior layout is spacious, giving everyone their personal bubble — a luxury in public transport.

As the driver, I felt like I was in the cockpit of a spaceship. The ergonomic seat is adjustable in all the right ways, and the digital dashboard provides all the info you need without making you feel like you’re deciphering the Matrix. Battery status, range, system diagnostics — it’s all there, clear as day.

This bus is like KITT from Knight Rider had a baby with a Tesla. The Lion City E is packed with tech that makes driving it feel like playing a really advanced video game. There’s an intelligent energy management system that optimises battery use, and the onboard telematics system gives you real-time data, so you always know what’s going on under the hood.

Safety? Oh, it’s got that covered too. We’re talking collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, and a 360-degree camera system that makes sure you can see everything around you. It’s like having eyes in the back of your head, plus a few extra sets for good measure.

Obivously the biggest benefit on paper is the environmental impact. The Lion City E is an all-electric vehicle, which means

zero tailpipe emissions. You can drive this bus around the city all day and not add a single puff of pollution to the air. More immediately, the lack of vibration and noise is the major asset of the bus. It runs quieter than a mouse sneaking into a cheese factory, which means less noise pollution.

This truly is a transformative experience from a passenger point of view and after spending a morning with the MAN Lion City E, I can confidently say this – and

The bus delivers a smooth and quiet ride”

other vehicle like it – is the future of urban transport. But you probably knew that already. It’s efficient, eco-friendly, and surprisingly, ridiculously fun to drive. Electric buses might cost more upfront, but the savings on fuel and maintenance, plus the environmental benefits, make it a no-brainer if there is a budget and infrastructure available for it. If the positive indications of the battery cooling testing in hot weather is anything to go by, MAN Truck & Bus has nailed it with this one.

INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT

Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO,

MAN

Truck & Bus takes a deep dive into leading one of world’s biggest truck-makers

Alexander Vlaskamp, the CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, picks up a pen and starts scribbling on a white board. A few minutes later, the lesson is over, and he clicks the pen top back in place. Pointing at the words and arrows, he tells T&FME that this is how he sees the next two decades of the commercial vehicles industry will play out. Insightful, dynamic and with a dash of the arch educator it is easy to understand why his tenure at the German giant was recently renewed by Traton Group.

Tasked with leading MAN Truck & Bus’ transition into a new era of transport, Vlaskamp, shows few signs of jet-lag as he sits down with T&FME to reflect on his leadership at the German giant and share a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of his role as CEO. At a time of massive change in his industry, Vlaskamp emphasises to T&FME the importance of strategic alignment and adaptability, “ensuring that the company’s long-term goals are met while responding swiftly to market changes.”

Vlaskamp’s approach as CEO of MAN Truck & Bus SE has been characterised by a relentless focus on innovation and market exploration.

“It’s crucial to explore what new technologies, what new production methods, what new markets to explore, and understand where we are in this adoption curve,” he notes, adding that this involves a comprehensive understanding of emerging technologies and how they fit into the company’s strategic vision.

Transitioning to the role of CEO, according to Vlaskamp, involved a significant shift in perspective.

“As CEO, I am the one who has to connect the dots. That’s my main assignment,” he says. Every CEO of a company the size of MAN will approach their responsibilities differently and for Vlaskamp, the role demands a holistic view of the business, integrating various aspects from production to market strategy, ensuring that the company not only stays on course but also adapts effectively to short-term needs.

The conversation quickly delves into the broader global market trends influencing the commercial vehicles industry.

Vlaskamp highlights the crucial role of transportation in driving economic growth, particularly in regions experiencing rapid population growth and GDP expansion.

“Transportation is driven by growth of population and GDP growth. In the Middle East and Southeast Asia, we see an exponential need for transportation of goods and people as middle incomes grow,” he observes.

Vlaskamp is admirably clear of where MAN stands in an ever-competitive landscape and emphasises MAN Truck & Bus’s strengths in various segments, including oil rigs, construction, fire and rescue, and general cargo.

“We are very strong in oil rigs, construction, and fire and rescue segments. We are now putting more focus on the general cargo business, and we are gaining more foothold in this area,” he says.

You’ve seen these urban areas grow up and it’s starting to get denser. Now we need to bring in even more greener solutions to stick to COP28 targets”

Vlaskamp is speaking to T&FME from inside MAN’s regional hub in Dubai – a sign of how important it remains as Saudi booms and Africa and Asia still beckon. When discussing market entry strategies, Vlaskamp points out the unique challenges and opportunities he sees in different regions.

“You have markets which are pretty close, like India, where entry barriers are high. In contrast, regions like the Emirates offer superior infrastructure, making them ideal for our high-mileage, sophisticated products,” he explains. It is a nuanced understanding of regional market dynamics and critical for formulating effective entry strategies and ensuring sustainable growth.

The Middle East, with its rapid urbanisation and population growth, presents a unique market for commercial vehicles, he adds.

“You’ve seen these urban areas grow up and it’s starting to get denser. Now we need to bring in even more greener solutions to stick to COP28 targets,” Vlaskamp remarks, stressing the importance of having a robust dealer network and local partnerships, which are essential for providing consistent service levels and support to customers.

Ultimately, he wants MAN Truck & Bus to be strategically focused on simplifying business processes for customers, a philosophy that Vlaskamp believes is crucial in this market: “Our philosophy is to simplify business for our customers, making it easy to do business with us, and ensuring access to local service points with high standards of repair and availability of spare parts.”

The company’s commitment towards long-term relationships with local partners in the region is evident in a series of ongoing strategic initiatives, as Vlaskamp underlines to T&FME: “We have the partners in place for a long journey, and it is of utmost importance for us to ensure a stable growth of competences at our service dealers and sales dealer teams – this is what we are known for in more than 70 countries globally.”

While this focus on building a skilled and dedicated local workforce among its dealer network is crucial for sustaining growth and maintaining high service

standards, the conversation shifts to another look at that word sustainability.

Focused on decarbonisation

Throughout, sustainability emerges as a critical theme in the discussion, reflecting the industry’s shift towards greener solutions. Vlaskamp shares his overview of MAN Truck & Bus’s journey towards sustainable transport to date, highlighting the adoption of electric buses in Europe and the planned expansion of battery electric and hydrogen trucks.

“In 2023, with close to 800 electric city buses delivered in Europe, we are market

leader in battery electric buses. We are now also ramping up our battery electric truck production,” he says as he points to the whiteboard once more before drawing on the letter and number combination of H2. As he enthusiastically explains the technology from his perspective, it becomes clear where he sees the potential of hydrogen: long-haul applications.

“Hydrogen produced through solar power is an opportunity here. Yes, you have transformation losses, but at least you can use the solar power efficiently,” Vlaskamp says enthusiastically.

Hydrogen technology applied in the Middle East represents a significant opportunity for the commercial vehicles industry

Vlaskamp elaborates: “Hydrogen produced through solar power can be an effective way to utilise excess renewable energy. While there are transformation losses, the ability to store and use solar power efficiently makes hydrogen a viable option.”

He says the company is actively exploring hydrogen solutions, with a focus on long-haul applications where fast refuelling and continuous operation are critical.

“Hydrogen lends itself well to applications requiring fast refuelling and heavier transportation, where battery electric solutions may not be as practical in some cases,” Vlaskamp explains, highlighing ongoing collaborations with energy providers and the positive response from customers interested in hydrogen-powered vehicles.

TAKING A LEAD IN THE MARKET
Under Alexander Vlaskamp’s leadership, MAN Truck & Bus is committed to driving forward in the region with a customercentric approach, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, and maintaining high standards of quality and service.

Discussing the technical aspects of hydrogen and battery electric vehicles, Vlaskamp focuses on the importance of infrastructure: “For battery electric trucks, we are working on setting up the right charging infrastructure. It’s crucial to have the grids in place to support fast charging, especially for long-haul operations,” he explains.

E-mobility is a significant focus for MAN Truck & Bus, and it has looked to outside partners who can bring in their own world-leading expertise such as ABB and Siemens. Collaborations like these are ensuring a robust and scalable support system for MAN’s electric vehicles and the fleets that are using them. Vlaskamp admits that MAN has had some catching up to do with some of its closest rivals unveiling their e-trucks and buses far earlier. He says the wait for MAN was justifiable.

“We were not the earliest on the market with full battery electric vehicles, but we wanted to have a strong and compelling product and the right modularity of our battery systems together with the right modularity of our new bus platform,” he explains. This approach ensures that the company delivers vehicles that meet customer needs in terms of passenger capacity, range, and overall performance.

The company’s success in the European market with electric buses has provided valuable lessons for the expansion into electric trucks.

“We have seen with battery electric buses in Europe that the market is now demanding battery electric vehicles for city transportation. We expect a similar trajectory for trucks. Only seven months after start of sales we already received 2,000 orders or order requests. This great customer interest clearly exceeds our expectations,” Vlaskamp states.

Addressing the specific needs of the Middle Eastern market, Vlaskamp discloses that there are adaptations being developed for electric vehicles in extreme climates.

“We are working on further optimising the battery and HVAC systems to ensure that the vehicles can operate efficiently in high temperatures without excessive battery consumption,” he says. These technical adaptations are crucial for ensuring the viability of electric vehicles in regions with extreme weather conditions.

the industry. It’s an opportunity to see how far he, and the industry. has come.

We will bring our TGE van to the market. It’s an obvious choice given the demand for versatile, highquality commercial vehicles”

“I’m nearly 30 years in the industry, and of course, diesel is very much in my blood, but this is the sign of the times – and zero emission will be the future,” he says.

Vlaskamp identifies a turning point in his perspective on sustainability in 2018.

“I saw the adoption rate of battery electric buses going up. That was when I realized that hybrids might be too complex and expensive for trucks, and it’s better to go the whole way with battery electric,” he recalls.

This shift in thinking underscores the importance of fully committing to sustainable technologies to achieve meaningful reductions in CO2 emissions.

Strategic Initiatives and Future Plans

During his talk with T&FME, Vlaskamp frequently outlines parts of the strategic initiatives and future plans he and the local team have for MAN Truck & Bus in the Middle East. The ultimate aim is to build on its success in the region, including its best-ever performance last

year, by enhancing its product offerings and expanding its market presence.

“Last year, we had a record year, and we will try to even top it,” he states.

One of the key focus areas is the introduction of the MAN TGE van to the Middle Eastern market.

“We will bring our TGE van to the market. It’s an obvious choice given the demand for versatile, high-quality commercial vehicles,” Vlaskamp remarks.

Tentatively arriving later in the year, the TGE van is expected to complement the company’s existing product range, offering customers a reliable and efficient solution for light-duty and specialized applications.

The imminent arrival of the TGE shows MAN Truck & Bus remains committed to ensuring that its vehicles meet the highest quality standards, even when adapted for local market needs.

“We are bringing competences closer to our factories to ensure that adaptations are made to the same highquality standards. Our customers will notice that it’s not just a base truck with add-ons, but a tailor-made solution with consistent quality,” Vlaskamp emphasises.

A customer-centric approach will also always be at the heart of MAN Truck & Bus’s strategy in the Middle East and Vlaskamp stresses the importance of understanding customer needs and ensuring a seamless experience throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

“We aim to simplify business for our customers, ensuring that it’s easy to do business with us, from acquiring a new truck and offering proper finance solutions to accessing local service points,” he says.

The company’s robust dealer network is a critical component of this strategy.

“We have the right partners in place for a long journey, and we are focused on growing competences at our service dealers and sales dealers teams,” Vlaskamp notes, again highlighting an emphasis on building a skilled and dedicated local workforce that ensures customers receive consistent, high-quality service.

With a clear focus on sustainability and innovation, MAN Truck & Bus is poised to navigate the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly changing landscape. As Vlaskamp succinctly puts it: “Our strategy is to simplify business for our customers and ensure sustainable, long-term relationships.”

Scania Middle East

targets drivers as it launches a comprehensive road safety campaign in the

SUAE ENHANCING AWARENESS

cania Middle East recently launched an extensive road safety campaign in collaboration with Al Shirawi Enterprises LLC in Dubai and Bin Brook Motors & Equipment LLC in Abu Dhabi. This initiative, part of Scania’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, emphasises the critical role of road safety, targeting truck drivers who are integral to road transportation.

Improving road safety is a collective responsibility shared by all stakeholders, from manufacturers to drivers, pedestrians, and policymakers. With this ethos in mind, Scania Middle East’s campaign focuses on educating truck drivers – individuals whose professional roles place them at the forefront of road safety. The “Road Safety Heroes” initiative aims to promote smart and safe driving behaviors through educational outreach at public truck resting areas in the UAE.

The campaign started in Dubai/ Northern Emirates, with strong support

from Al Shirawi Enterprises. During this phase, Scania interacted with over 60 drivers, encouraging them to adopt safer driving habits. Following this, the initiative extended to Abu Dhabi in partnership with Bin Brook Motors & Equipment. Here, more than 70 drivers participated, pledging to prioritise road safety regardless of whether they drive Scania vehicles or other brands. This underscores the universal importance of road safety awareness.

Beyond immediate engagement, Scania promotes its Driver Training and Driver Evaluation/Coaching programs through the Fleet Management System. This long-term approach ensures that drivers receive continuous education and support, reinforcing safe driving behaviours. Scania Middle East is committed to extending this initiative throughout the region, driving meaningful impact and fostering a culture of responsibility among drivers.

The campaign being rolled out in the UAE is built around ten essential safety tips and is designed to enhance road safety for truck drivers.

Staying focused on the road and using hands-free devices when necessary ensures that attention remains on driving”

For example, regularly performing pre-trip safety checks is essential to ensure that your vehicle is in optimal condition. Fleets should focus particularly on critical components like tyres and brakes, as proper tire inflation and brake function are vital for safe driving, especially under heavy loads. Securing a load properly prevents shifting that could destabilise your vehicle.

Being informed about current road conditions, detours, and vehicle restrictions also allows for better trip planning and can help avoid unexpected delays or hazards. This preparation can reduce stress and enhance safety by ensuring you are prepared for any road conditions you may encounter. Truckdrivers share the road with other users, including pedestrians and smaller vehicles. Slowing down at pedestrian crossings and remaining vigilant of other vehicles enhances safety for everyone. This consideration can help prevent accidents and fosters a more cooperative road environment.

Furthermore, seatbelts are a fundamental safety feature that can save lives in the event of an accident. Always wearing a seatbelt, whether driving or riding as a passenger, reduces the risk of severe injury by keeping the driver secured in their seat. Clear communication with other road users through signals and early braking is crucial to help prevent misunderstandings and accidents by informing others of intended actions, allowing them to react accordingly.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of accidents. Staying focused on the road and using hands-free devices when necessary ensures that attention remains on driving. This focus is critical for reacting promptly to changing road conditions. Road signs and signals provide important information and instructions that help regulate traffic and ensure safety. Following these signs and signals diligently helps prevent accidents and ensures smooth traffic flow.

Driving at a safe speed is also crucial, especially when considering your vehicle’s load and the surrounding environment.

Speeding increases the risk of accidents and makes it harder to react to unexpected situations. Maintaining a safe speed helps ensure better control of a vehicle. Trucks require more distance to stop compared to smaller vehicles, particularly when carrying heavy loads. Being aware of this and slowing down for curves or ramps can prevent rollovers or crashes, ensuring safer navigation through different road conditions.

Trucks have larger blind spots than smaller vehicles. By regularly checking mirrors every 8-10 seconds helps drivers stay aware of the vehicles around them, reducing the risk of collisions during lane changes or turns.

The initiative highlights Scania Middle East’s commitment to road safety and its proactive approach to engaging and educating the trucking community. With the road safety campaign aiming to foster a culture of safety among truck drivers, implementing these safety tips, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and contribute to safer roads.
