YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST E-TIME

I’ve always considered myself a bit of a petrolhead, but MAN Truck & Bus facility in Munich might have just turned me into a volthead. I drove an electric bus, and let me tell you, it was a shockingly good time (ahem)!

For someone who has driven every vehicle bar a bus, I’m sure you can picture me, standing there in front of a gleaming, futuristic electric bus, feeling like a kid about to ride the world’s biggest, fanciest toy. I halfexpected it to start talking to me in a soothing, robotic voice, but alas, it remained silent, probably too sophisticated for small talk.

As I climbed aboard, the first thing I noticed was the absence of that familiar diesel engine growl. Instead, I was greeted by an almost eerie silence. It felt like stepping into a sci-fi movie. I was half-expecting to be teleported to my destination. Spoiler alert: teleportation wasn’t included, but the smooth ride made up for it.

Sitting in the driver’s seat, I was surrounded by more tech than you’d find in a James Bond car. Digital displays showed everything from battery life to range and performance metrics. I felt like I needed a pilot’s license just to understand all the information at my fingertips. But once I got the hang of it, I realized I was at the helm of something truly revolutionary.

Driving the electric bus was, in a word and ahem, electrifying. The acceleration was so smooth and responsive that it was easy to forget I was driving a bus and not a fancy sports car. Maneuvering through the

streets of Munich, I couldn’t help but enjoy the irony of this massive vehicle gliding as quietly as a whisper. Pedestrians didn’t know whether to be impressed or concerned about the stealthy giant approaching them.

Now, let’s talk about the environment. Driving this bus made me feel like a superhero doing my bit to save the planet. Electric buses are the caped crusaders of urban transportation — reducing air pollution, cutting down greenhouse gas emissions, and making cities quieter and frankly more livable.

Clearly, the folks at MAN Truck & Bus have poured their hearts, souls, and possibly some magic potions into these electric marvels. Their dedication to innovation and sustainability shines through in every aspect of the bus’s design and performance. It’s like they took a regular bus, sent it to a Swiss finishing school, and voila—a sophisticated, ecofriendly vehicle ready to take on the world.

Reflecting on my experience, I’m filled with a mix of amazement and excitement. The electric bus isn’t just a mode of transport; it’s a glimpse into the future — a future where our cities are cleaner, quieter, and a whole lot cooler. Well cooler if you forget the on-going problems with cooling those pesky batteries on top.

So, dear readers, let’s keep an eye on the developments in electric transportation. The road ahead is bright (and possibly very quiet), and I’m thrilled to be on this journey with you. Who knows? Maybe next time, we’ll be talking about flying buses. A person can dream, right?

THIERRY SABBAGH WELCOMES JUDGEMENT AFTER LEGAL DISPUTE INITIATED BY FORMER DISTRIBUTOR, AL DAHANA FZCO, CONCLUDES WITH COURT FAVOURING NISSAN

MANUFACTURERS

Nissan Motor Corporation has welcomed a final judgment from Dubai’s highest court, ruling in its favour and concluding a legal dispute initiated by a former distribution partner, Al Dahana FZCO.

Al Dahana FZCO had lodged various claims against Nissan following the end of their joint business venture in the Middle East (Nissan Gulf FZCO) in 2019.

In June 2022, the Dubai Court of Appeal issued a comprehensive judgment favouring Nissan, dismissing all of Al Dahana’s claims against Nissan.

Subsequently, in November 2022, the Dubai Court of Appeal issued another ruling in Nissan Motor’s favour, fully dismissing the case against it.

The Dubai Court of Appeal’s judgement was upheld by the Dubai Court of Cassation, which

rendered a final decision on April 30th, 2024, in favour of Nissan.

Thierry Sabbagh, the recently promoted Divisional Vice President, President Middle East, KSA - Nissan, INFINITI, said: “We welcome this judgement from the Dubai Court of Cassation, which maintains our position that we had acted properly and complied with all our contractual obligations.

He added: “Throughout these proceedings, we remained confident and cemented our trust in the Dubai judicial system.”

“The Middle East remains pivotal for Nissan, and we are proud of our heritage in the region which spans 30 years of operations and a long-standing legacy of dedicated service to our valued customers.

Together with our esteemed partners and committed workforce, we are excited about what the future holds for Nissan in the region.”

TADWEER’S MATERIAL RECOVERY FACILITY REACHES TENDERING STAGE

WASTE MANAGEMENT

Sustainable waste management specialist Tadweer has announced that bidding has now closed for the planned development of Abu Dhabi’s first greenfield Material Recovery Facility (MRF).

The state-of-the-art facility will recover recyclable materials derived from municipal solid waste, significantly maximising the diversion of waste from landfills through recycling and preparing feedstock for the Abu Dhabi Waste to Energy facility. This will help promote a ‘circular economy’ and supports Tadweer Group’s wider ambition of diverting 80% of Abu Dhabi’s waste away from landfill by 2030, the firm said.

The long-term objectives for the facility include providing feedstock for other waste conversion processes and products, such as waste to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Tadweer Group Managing Director and CEO, Ali Al Dhaheri noted, “As we continue to revolutionise waste management in Abu Dhabi, we’re delighted to share this important milestone. A key part of our circular cluster, the development of the greenfield Material Recovery Facility is clear progress for the emirate.

This aligns with our strategic vision to harness technology to extend the lifetime of recyclable materials for a sustainable future. The facility will also directly contribute to our longterm ambitions of waste conversion, as we take steps forward to achieve a circular economy, echoing the pillars of the UAE’s Net Zero agenda.”

RTA LAUNCHES SURVEY TO STUDY AND EASE TRAFFIC IN DUBAI

MOBILITY

In response to traffic challenges in Dubai, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a survey for feedback from motorists.

The RTA said the comprehensive survey is aimed at private sector employees and seeks to gather insights into traffic movement patterns, specifically exploring the potential impact of flexible work hours and remote working arrangements.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the RTA said: “In its effort to manage traffic flow and address congestion, #RTA, in cooperation with other relevant entities in the Emirate of Dubai, is conducting a survey that takes about 10 minutes to complete, to understand the current situation in the private sector in relation to ‘flexible work hours’ and ‘remote working’.”

attended by John Iossifidis, GCEO at Al Ghurair, and Yusef Ma, CEO at TAM-Europe, along with other senior representatives from both companies. A highlight of the event was the electric delivery van Model T600 displayed at the booth, which drew high interest from various leading logistics companies from around the world.

On the survey site the RTA clarified with the following statement: “Flexible work hours represent practices that provide flexibility in working hours and include the “flexible work start window“, which is the time window during which employees are allowed to start work (for example, the flexible work start window from 7 to 9 AM means that the employee can start work at any time between 7 and 9 AM and accordingly the departure time will depend on the time they start work and the required number of working hours.”

Glamour, glitz and Naomi Campbell

Glittering movie premieres, stars gracing the red carpet, and a high-performance vehicle that looks like nothing else: this is the Cannes Film Festival.

The 77th Cannes Film Festival was the ideal setting for the world premiere of the BMW XM Mystique Allure. Against the stunning backdrop of the French portside resort, Naomi Campbell presented the oneof-a-kind creation inspired by her to an audience of selected guests before making her way in the car to the red carpet outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.

“Witnessing BMW’s vision for the BMW XM Mystique Allure come to life has been truly

incredible,” says Campbell. “I feel deeply honored to have sparked the inspiration for their first-ever high-fashion show car, which stands as a unique masterpiece in every aspect.”

This is the third year in succession that BMW has stepped up as the Official Automotive Partner of the Cannes Film Festival. It will lay on an exclusive shuttle service of more than 200 vehicles – among them the all-electric BMW i7, BMW iX, and BMW i5, and the plugin hybrid BMW XM – to give participants and guests at the event the experience of locally emission-free premium mobility.

The BMW XM Mystique Allure is the first vehicle in the

brand’s history to be designed using materials from the high fashion industry. This unusual tie-up showcases the BMW XM in a whole new light: expressive, avant-garde, stylish, and luxurious in equal measure.

Inspired by Naomi’s favorite colour, the vehicle’s exterior boasts a deeply saturated ultramarine shade, accentuated by a lustrous matte finish. A contemporary translation of highfashion materials from luxury textile manufacturers, the design seamlessly brings the inside to the outside, featuring rich velvet and shimmering Frozen metallic sequins casting hues ranging from intense violet to deep ultramarine.

The iridescent surfaces

were created with precise handcraftsmanship and a fine eye for detail. They take their cues from the eye-catching geometric forms of the BMW XM and bring a special visual richness to the car’s extrovert aesthetic. The design of the BMW XM Mystique Allure provides a meeting point for high performance and haute couture, painting a unique picture of progressive luxury that continues into the interior.

All of the surfaces inside the car, including the M Lounge in the rear, are covered in purple velvet. At its heart is a bespoke adaptation of the BMW IconicSounds Electric developed as part of the collaboration between BMW Group Sound

Jack Uppal, President & Managing Director of General Motors Africa & Middle East, expressed his enthusiasm for the new vehicles. “This year is for the books. We are thrilled to introduce two amazing additions to our line-up of premium trucks and SUVs, set to redefine the future of off-roading,” Uppal stated.

“The GMC HUMMER EV marks our first step into electric mobility in the region, while the Canyon AT4X brings unprecedented off-road capability to the midsize truck segment.”

The new models complement GMC’s existing lineup, which includes the GMC Yukon, Terrain, and Acadia, the latter of which has also seen significant upgrades this year.

The introduction of the GMC HUMMER EV and Canyon AT4X is part of GMC’s broader strategy to cater to a diverse range of preferences and tastes across the region, ensuring that GMC remains at the forefront of innovation and quality in the

automotive sector. The GMC HUMMER EV has garnered a significant following since its initial reveal. Unique is the CrabWalk feature, which allows the vehicle to move diagonally, enhancing maneuverability in challenging terrains. The HUMMER EV is set to be available starting this summer. Also arriving in the summer, the GMC Canyon AT4X is an off-road midsize truck. It combines robust off-road equipment with advanced technology for maximum capability. FEELING

Buying a new car today presents an interesting challenge for would be buyers; a number of automotive brands have expanded their model offerings significantly in the last decade, to the point that they offer a product for every micro-niche. As an automotive enthusiast, this journalist has always believed choice is a good thing, and while there’s certainly tons of metal out there today, proceedings take a sharp U-turn when it comes to finding something that offers bang for your buck.

A variety of elements from increasing material costs, to chip shortages and - lets face it - the thirst for greater profits by manufacturers has seen prices for new vehicles increase significantly in the last decade. As an example, the last time this journalist was in the market for a car in the late 2000s, a budget of AED80,000 opened the door to several vehicles including a midspec Toyota RAV4 or Nissan X-Trail (both compact crossovers). Alternatively, for that spend at that point in time, you could also get slightly better specified compact crossovers from brands like Hyundai and KIA, and could consider at least a dozen other cars.

Today however, things are quite different; both the aforementioned Japanese contenders boast a starting price of AED99,900, while getting into a basic Hyundai Tucson will run you approximately AED90,000. Those base vehicles offer precious little in terms of features, and are rather dull to look at, and there aren’t many other solid choices for under AED100,000 at present.

So, if you are a young adult or young couple and want a vehicle that doesn’t break the bank yet offers modern features, a decent driving experience, and stands out in a sea of forgettable metal, the million dollar question is: what are your options? Thankfully, help is at hand from the Far East.

Enter the COOLRAY

Geely features two subcompact models, with the Coolray first breaking cover late in 2018 (it is known as the Geely Binyue in its home market), and since its introduction all those years ago, Geely has kept the platform up-to-date with constant tweaks and updates. The T&FME tester costs AED 79,900 and was finished in an attractive ‘Lavender’ colour (a recent introduction). The vehicle is also offered in grey, white, red and blue at the time of going to press, however as a nice

extra – the vehicle’s 18-inch tomahawk style wheels are exclusively offered in purple only on lavender finished vehicles (black rims are offered as standard on the other colour options). T&FME has been quoted rental rates in the UAE, where the vehicle was tested, at 159 AED (daily); 1,059 AED (weekly); 2,999 AED (monthly) on some sites, but can be as low as 1720 AED (monthly). This seems more in line with other Chinese brands and equivalent vehicles in its class.

In the metal, the Coolray is an attractive thing and is one of those vehicles you feel the designers just couldn’t stop designing. While that can sometimes be a bad thing,

It’s quite possibly one of the best value buys on the market today”

the Coolray has a cohesiveness to its design – those front bumper slats, hood vents, rear wing, creases and body lines come together well, and give the car an attractive and sporty look. The subtle purple rims match the lavender paint job brilliantly and there’s tasteful use of faux carbon fibre, as well as contrasting black and red elements (roof, mirrors, grille etc.), all of which give the vehicle a decent bit of presence.

The Coolray even has quad exhausts integrated on either side of its rear bumper (in pairs of two) – the great news is on conducting a close-up visual inspection, those exhaust finishers actually lead to actual exhaust pipes. Fake exhausts on sporty vehicles are a personal bugbear (I’m looking at you NISMO Patrol) that really put this reviewer off, so it’s brilliant the Coolray sidesteps that faux pas.

Stepping into the vehicle, the sense of ‘they went all out on the design’ continues – the cabin is awash with interesting design elements, a mix of different materials and backs up the car’s sporty exterior well. Two screens dominate the Coolray’s dashboard, however Geely has also included physical buttons and controls on the steering wheel and dash for features like intelligent cruise control, air conditioning and audio – Geely gets points here for avoiding haptic touch controls, which seem to be finding their way into more and more vehicles each year.

Geely’s buttons and controls all had a nice tactile feel to them, and as their function

THE CHOICE IS YOURS There are four different trims of Coolray in the market, however the powertrain remains the same across the board – a 1.5 litre four cylinder engine with 172hp and 214ft/lb of torque mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

doesn’t change in context to what you’re doing, it’s easy to build muscle memory and habits – you’ll therefore get comfortable and familiar with the Coolray quite quickly.

The only real complaint this reviewer had with the Coolray’s interior from a design standpoint was with regards to the use of the black plastic trim around the gear selector and around the door handles –those picked up fingerprints and were dust magnets, and needed a wipe down every couple of days to look presentable. The other issue was with the lack of support for Apple Carplay and Android Auto – this is a disappointing omission that this reviewer hopes is remedied in future iterations of the vehicle. That said - if you have to have it on your Coolray now, there do seem to be ways to install both using third party

The Coolray is an attractive thing and is one of those vehicles you feel the designers just couldn’t stop designing”

USB add-ons (feel free to YouTube that).

The vehicle’s user interface (UI) is fairly straightforward and easy to navigate, though it isn’t the most polished in terms of its looks and the way information is sometimes presented (in the vehicle health status section, the text “The car in good condition” was displayed for example).

Apart from those issues, the Coolray’s cabin is a pleasant place to be, with a clean mix of contrasting black and red elements. Controls are logically laid out and within arm’s reach, while the cabin is airy whether you’ve got the large panoramic sunroof open or closed, and offers good all-around visibility. Given the vehicle’s subcompact size, rear legroom might be a bit of a pinch for taller passengers but that’s to be expected given the vehicle’s 2600mm wheelbase.

The T&FME tester had about 5,631KM on the clock when this reviewer collected it, and over the four-day test period, there were no detectable squeaks or rattles at all. Interior trim touchpoints felt good and was solidly bolted into the car with zero play when pushed and prodded.

A cool contender for Dubai’s roads? There’s four different specs of the Coolray on offer, however the powertrain remains the same across the board – a 1.5 litre four cylinder engine with 172hp and 214ft/lb of torque mated to a seven-speed dualclutch transmission. The powertrain is a fine match for the vehicle; the engine and transmission are fairly refined operators and in comfort driving mode (you can choose from sport, comfort, eco and

adaptive) the car gets off the line well, and the transmission does a good job of keeping the engine in its power band as you go about your business, and most overtaking moves don’t require much consideration.

In mixed use driving the Coolray proved frugal in terms of petrol consumption. On the highway, with the intelligent cruise control maintaining 100km/h (the cruise control even follows vehicles well around bends and turns which is fantastic), the Coolray reported it was doing 4.6l/100km, while mixed used driving (slow and high-speed on city roads and highways) saw average fuel consumption of about 8.4l/100km.

A full tank on the Coolray at the time of going to press (AED 3.22 per litre for Special 95) costs AED 145 and gave a range of 402km

- you’ll probably be able to manage more than that if you spend more time on highways rather than sitting in constant city traffic. Switching to the other drive modes changes the character of the Coolray slightly, though

The cabin is awash with interesting design elements, a mix of different materials and backs up the car’s sporty exterior well”

at all costs, as it makes the vehicle feel sluggish.

If you floorboard the accelerator from a standing start, you can get a bit of torque steer (the Coolray is front wheel drive after all), as the car steps off the line – it will do 0-100km/h in under 8 seconds. Being a small displacement turbo engine, the engine runs out of huff at high-way speeds beyond 140km/h but that scenario will be quite rare for most people (unless you frequently drive to Oman or Saudi Arabia from the UAE).

Considering the Coolray’s 18-inch wheels and low profile rubber, ride quality is a nice blend of sporty and compliant. T&FME visits MAN Truck and Bus ultra-modern plant in Krakow TO FREIGHT

The message on a sunlit spring day at MAN’s gleaming plant in Krakow was straightforward. Here is a Polish plant that is producing state-of-the-art vehicles using the latest technologies and manufacturing practices. The trucks may not have Made in Germany stamped onto the chassis but this is an operation which has been built to surpass even the highest of European standards. After just 16 months from laying the foundation stone, MAN successfully completed the expansion of its plant in Krakow in 2021. Truck production is now

running in three shifts and will continue to ramp up until the end of the year. MAN invested around 200 million euros in the expansion of the Polish production site. The plant was enlarged by about a third of its area and now covers 41 hectares – the equivalent of almost 60 football pitches. Previously, only heavy-duty trucks were manufactured here, but now the site also handles the production of light and medium-duty series. Following the conversion, roughly 300 vehicles and cabs can now come off the assembly line in Krakow every day, more than tripling the previous capacity. Additionally, a new pellet heating plant

has been built, contributing to the planned CO2-neutrality of the site.

With approximately 1,500 new jobs created, there are now also three times as many employees at the site as before the conversion, totaling over 2,600 employees. This means that only 15 years after its opening, the youngest plant in the truck production network is now a major contributor to MAN’s global manufacturing footprint and one of Poland’s top employers.

“Krakow is a highly efficient and highly qualified location. Around two-thirds of all MAN trucks and truck cabs are assembled here in top quality. In addition, with the

modified trucks, we offer vehicles individually adapted to the needs of our customers,” explained MAN production board member Michael Kobriger at the opening.

As part of the expansion, a 32,000sqm hall for cab production and a 10,000 square meter hall for the Truck Modification Centre and final assembly were newly built. The essential certifications and acceptances were successfully completed. The intensive training of the new employees on equipment and with tools took place at the Munich plant, ensuring uniform standards within the production network.

With the takeover of the light and medium series, the MAN plant in Krakow is now able to offer the complete truck range in the highest quality. For the heavy range, Krakow also acts as a volume balancing plant for the main plant in Munich, where space is needed for the mixed production of conventional and battery-electric trucks. Munich is currently undergoing a conversion for electrification, with series production of the first MAN eTruck set to start there as early as next year. Krakow and Munich thus form a strong partner duo in the truck alliance.

Sitting down with T&FME, Joerg Mommertz, Senior Vice President – Head of Center Importer Middle East, Africa, Latin America & CIS countries, and Dr. Richard Slovák, Plant Manager at MAN Krakow, delved into how the MAN Bus and Truck plant in Krakow has become an elite site in MAN’s factory network and why it could yet play a role in the evolution of new vehicle drivelines. Over the course of an hour, the architects of the new plant highlighted its journey, potential future investments, and its role in the inevitable shift towards e-mobility and alternative energy sources in commercial vehicles.

Evolution of MAN Krakow Plant

The changes we’ve seen today are a big leap compared to the old years”

Dr Slovák outlined the substantial changes at the MAN Krakow plant, noting a marked transformation from previous years. The plant has seen significant investments aimed at modernization and expansion. One of the major future investments under consideration is the establishment of a new battery plant. Although this project is still in the negotiation phase and not yet decided, it represents a strategic move towards embracing new technologies and future-proofing the plant’s operations.

“The changes we’ve seen today are a big leap compared to the old years,” remarked Dr Slovák, emphasising the ongoing transformation at the MAN Krakow plant. These changes are part of a broader strategy to modernize the facility

and prepare for future demands. One of the major future investments under consideration is a new battery plant. “We are currently in negotiations to possibly open a new battery plant here, but that has not yet been decided,” he explained.

Despite these advancements, Dr. Slovák emphasized that the journey is far from over. The plant is continually planning further investments to stay ahead of industry trends and meet future demands.

“We are still planning further investments here in Krakow,” he said.

One of the notable initiatives discussed was “Project Speed,” introduced by Dr Slovák. This project involves the production of a small fleet of light electric vehicles. Although it is a small-scale project, it signifies MAN Krakow’s commitment to integrating e-mobility into

its production capabilities. The project name, “Speed,” reflects the rapid development and deployment of these electric vehicles.

“It will be a small project, but it will be a small fleet of light vehicles,” he said, highlighting the plant’s commitment to integrating e-mobility into its production capabilities. The project reflects MAN Krakow’s strategy to explore and expand its electric vehicle offerings, he added.

As a leader in the MAN Truck and Bus effort to grow in non-European markets like the Middle East and Africa, Joerg Mommertz is almost uniquely placed to provide insights into the varying demands for alternative energy vehicles across different regions.

While there is growing interest in electric vehicles (EVs) and hydrogen-powered vehicles, the transition is not uniform across all markets. For instance, the Middle East faces unique challenges related to thermal management, making e-mobility less feasible currently. However, hydrogen combustion engines present a promising alternative for this region, he told T&FME

“For our core markets, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America, there are some

spot demands for alternative drives,” he noted. He also pointed out that the transition is not uniform across all markets. For instance, the Middle East faces unique challenges related to thermal management, making e-mobility less feasible currently. The transition to e-mobility and alternative energy sources is expected to take longer in certain markets, ensuring that MAN can cater to current customer needs while gradually shifting towards greener technologies, he said.

“E-mobility is not a case yet and is still a challenge for all truck producers,” he explained, adding that hydrogen should now be taken seriously. “We are in close contact now with some big potential customers which are interested in the hydrogen combustion engine and we have already announced a small series of 200 vehicles.

“They will be produced in Munich and not here. E-mobility, I see in Latin America here and there, but it’s not a business case yet for the customer, and similar to Europe it depends on the speed of developing the charging infrastructure. In Morocco and Middle East we are seeing e-mobility in city buses, but hydrogen currently for the

Middle East countries is an interesting project. We have some close contact to some potential customers. But these are small individual business cases. I would say 99% of demand in these markets is still for ICE (internal combustion engines).”

Focusing on traditional engines and drivelines for a moment, Mommertz emphasised MAN’s commitment to continue producing combustion engines as long as there is customer demand.

“We will not stop building combustion engines until the end of the engine, as long as our customers need it,” he stated.

Attracting Young Talent and Diversity

Returning to the Krakow operation, Dr. Slovák highlighted the plant’s efforts to attract and retain young professionals and women in the workforce. Over the past two and a half years, the percentage of women in production roles has increased from 2.5-3% to 14%. This shift reflects MAN Krakow’s inclusive approach and commitment to diversity, he said.

“When I started here, we asked ourselves this question: How are we

going to motivate the new employees to come to work for us?” he recalled.

Innovative workplace practices, such as playing music on the production floor, have been introduced to enhance employee motivation and satisfaction. This practice, though seemingly small, has had a positive impact on the work environment, making the plant an attractive place for young professionals.

“The employees said that it motivates them, and we are more motivated to work in the line,” said Dr Slovák, describing the positive impact of this practice.

Poland has a proud union movement and MAN has consulted with them throughout the transition. The clean and modern halls that house the production lines are served by an army of robots that perform heavy tasks, transporting parts to where and when they are needed. Initially, automation at MAN Krakow was seen both as a challenge and an

opportunity, but has been embraced fully by the workforce through careful consultation.

While there are concerns about job losses, the focus is on retraining employees for more specialised roles, said Mommertz.

“You get more flexible. You can qualify those people to become more expert, which you need also in the future for mobility,” explained Mommertz.

Automation is also bringing ergonomic benefits, such as adjusting heights for work teams on the lines, ensuring that nothing is overlaboured or anyone overworked. Initiatives and improvements are designed to make working at the plant more attractive to younger employees and ensuring that everyone benefits from better working conditions for employees, said Dr Slovak.

MAN Krakow has furthermore established a partnership with the Technical University in Krakow to prepare students for future industry needs.

“We have to prepare young people for the new technology,” Dr. Slovák emphasised. This collaboration aims to ensure a steady pipeline of skilled workers adept in new technologies, benefiting both the plant and the broader automotive industry.

Consistent Quality Across Locations

Both Slovák and Mommertz stressed that MAN vehicles produced in Poland adhere to the same high standards as those made in Germany. This consistency in quality is a testament to the stringent standards and practices followed across all MAN production facilities.

“It’s always the same quality,” stated Dr. Slovák, underscoring both the stringent standards and practices followed across all MAN production facilities, and why MAN Krakow is poised for a sustainable and progressive future in the automotive industry.

GORICA Industries LLC, a cornerstone in the truck trailer manufacturing industry, has built a legacy of innovation and customer satisfaction since its founding in 1990. Indeed, GORICA has evolved from a trading company in Dubai’s AlAweer Industrial Area into a formidable manufacturing entity headquartered in Jebel Ali Industrial Area 2. Under the careful leadership of Ivan Fornazaric, GORICA has expanded its footprint across the Middle East, establishing itself as a market leader with a diverse range of products tailored to meet the unique needs of its clients.

GORICA’s strategic growth in the Middle East began in earnest in 1998 with the establishment of a full-scale manufacturing facility in Jebel Ali. This facility marked the company’s transition from trading to manufacturing, enabling GORICA to produce a wide range of standard and non-standard commercial bodies and trailers. Today, GORICA’s product lineup includes trailers, semi-trailers, general cargo semi-trailers, curtain side semi-trailers, light cargo bodies, tipping semi-trailers, low bed semi-trailers, tank semi-trailers, truck-mounted tankers, transit mixers, municipal utility equipment, vacuum jetting combination units, refuse compactors, oil-field pressure vessels, and refrigerated truck-mounted bodies.

To support its growing stature in the market, GORICA has established sales and manufacturing operations throughout the GCC. In 2005, the firm opened a sales office in Kuwait City, followed by the establishment of GORICA Vehicles & Co LLC in Oman in 2009.

In 2011, GORICA Vehicles Qatar WLL was launched in Doha, and in 2020, GORICA Industrial LLC was established in Saudi Arabia. The company’s latest venture, a new sales, service, and manufacturing site in Riyadh Industrial Zone #2, was inaugurated in 2023, positioning GORICA to further expand within Saudi Arabia and potentially into East Africa.

GORICA’s commitment to innovation is evident in its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, which are equipped with advanced technology and machinery. Each factory is designed to optimise production efficiency and quality, featuring cutting, shearing, assembly, welding, painting, and blasting stations. GORICA’s focus on

quality is underscored by its adherence to rigorous quality control processes and certifications, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, OHSAS 18001:2007, and various ASME and UL stamps.

“Quality is the cornerstone of our brand,” says Domen Bockor, General Manager, Sales and Marketing at GORICA. “There is no compromise on it, and that is why we have become the leading body builder in the MEA region.”

The company’s dedication to research and development ensures that GORICA remains at the forefront of industry advancements. By investing in cutting-edge technologies and collaborating with key suppliers, GORICA continuously enhances the durability, reliability, and performance of its products. This commitment to excellence is reflected in the high resale value of GORICA products, adds Bockor: “Due to the high quality, GORICA products have become to hold highest re-sale value in the second-hand market reaching over a 20% higher re-sale value compared to any of our competitors.”

Bockor believes GORICA’s ability to customise its products to meet specific client requirements is a key differentiator in the Middle East market.

The company’s flexibility in design and manufacturing allows it to accommodate varying road regulations and industry demands across the region, he adds, with GORICA’s sales and engineering teams working closely with clients to develop bespoke solutions that align with local regulations and market needs, “ensuring a perfect fit for each project.”

Bockor explains: “Flexibility is one of our core values. Due to the diverse and developing economies within the GCC, customisation of our products is a necessity. This is our competitive advantage in the Middle East region.”

Wherever they are deployed in the region all GORICA products are fully compliant with the law and road regulations for the destination market and country, he adds.

“For example, we hold SASO certifications for all our products sold to KSA, and for every particular market we know, understand and build accordingly our bodies and trailers. This is crucial for the sales process as compliance is one of key prerogative of GORICA Group.”

With the mention of compliance, Bockor further elaborates on the current regulatory landscape for trailers. He

explains that the company is advocating for regulatory reforms to enhance the quality and safety of refrigerated transport in the GCC. For example, GORICA emphasises the need for regulations similar to Europe’s ATP standards to ensure the integrity of the cold chain and protect consumer health and safety.

“Road regulation and its enforcement is still lacking in the GCC and the broader MEA region. In Europe, for example, the 45 ton GVW (Gross vehicles weight) limits to truck-trailer loads are in place to ensure safe road transportation and protect other road-users.

Bockor continues: “Currently, road regulations vary by each market, but, looking generally, the lack of implementation of uniform, nation-wide or GCC-wide road and weight regulations is allowing non-conforming and low quality products to be sold in the market. And when these inferior and potentially dangerous truck-trailer combinations are driven on our roads, they have a direct impact on road safety for everyone.”

The low level of working regulations is also an issue in the refrigerated transportation sector, where the lack of ATP regulations allows second hand products – generally older than the seven

the Middle East and driven on our roads.

“Basically this has direct negative impact on quality and safety of food transportation as refrigerated semi trailers and bodies are not being checked against fungus, constant K value along the entire space,” Bockor explains.

GORICA supports for adopting regulations similar to Europe’s ATP standards in the GCC to enhance the quality and safety of refrigerated transport. “The UAE and the entire GCC need regulations

for the transportation of perishable goods, similar to ATP in Europe,” says Bockor. “Currently, there are practically no regulations for refrigerated transport when it comes to refrigerated semi-trailers. This results in a very low quality of the cold chain in countries that import outdated refrigerated semi-trailers from Europe.”

He continues, “GCC roads are filled with refrigerated semi-trailers that have been used for over 10 years, with many units being between 15-20 years old. The impact on health and safety is detrimental,

and we hope the region’s cold chain will soon be regulated to ensure high standards and protect consumers.”

One market in the GCC that GORICA sees significant potential is Saudi Arabia with its economy placed into high-speed by the country’s Vision 2030 programme and a plethora of ongoing economic reforms. Explaining the opening of the new facility in Riyadh, Bockor explains that the Kingdom holds exciting potential and opportunity for investors.

“It has the largest gross domestic product in the Middle East, equal to the combined GDP of all other GCC economies. With a young, highly educated population and strategic location, Saudi Arabia is poised for substantial growth,” says Bockor. “The government’s commitment to creating new business opportunities and improving the overall business environment makes Saudi Arabia a key focus for our expansion. Our new facility in Riyadh is just the beginning of our plans to deepen our presence and support the Kingdom’s ambitious goals.”

GORICA is committed to sustainable manufacturing practices and has implemented several eco-friendly initiatives.

The company’s GORICA Green Line programme is at the forefront of its sustainability efforts, focusing on developing fully electric and hydrogenpowered trailers and bodies.

At both the OEM and the fleet operator level, the region is beginning to explore greener forms of transportation, making it essential for truck trailer manufacturers to

deliver their own products and solutions. This led GORICA to launching its first fully electric truck and trailer combination last year and additional green products are planned to be rolled out in 2024.

Bockor explains that the firm has fully committed to sustainability throughout the organisation.

“Sustainability for GORICA Group is not only in the product but also in our culture and way of achieving our targets,” he says. “We believe that embracing a green growth strategy will help create more jobs,

reduce the gender gap, and ultimately result in the diversification of the economy.” Looking ahead, GORICA sees significant growth opportunities in the Middle East and Africa and is strategically focused on expanding its product portfolio while deepening its presence in key regions. With a robust pipeline of new products tied to its on-going commitment to quality and sustainability, GORICA is a company primed to drive forward with growth and set new benchmarks in excellence for years to come.
