As we were putting this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro together, it suddenly dawned on us what a truly international magazine this is. Not only is it read in over 50 countries across the globe, it also contains content and features from all over the world too! Take this issue for example; we have the Race Retro show and Coventry Transport Museum articles from the UK, then there is the ALMS 12 Hours of Sebring feature from the USA, a look back at the recent Retromobile show in France and a round-up of the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. International content for an international audience…and it’s free! Can it really get any better than that? Well, stand by, because it is about to. We are delighted to announce that Classic, Performance & Retro magazine has teamed up with the Robertson Racing ALMS Team in a joint Anglo-American partnership which should result in a series of exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ features on this highly competitive race outfit. The team competes in the American Le Mans Series with its impressive Ford GT Mk7 cars, and while they might look very similar to the iconic Ford GT40s that dominated the Le Mans 24 Hour race in the late 1960s, team owner David Robertson says they are very different cars. The team has also been selected to enter one of its cars in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour race in France. David described this as “a lifelong dream come true” and is looking forward immensely to the big race in June. If all goes to plan, you should be able to read more about the cars, the drivers and the team in future issues of Classic, Performance & Retro, so watch this space. Historic Maserati Goes On Sale Expected To Fetch Over $2 Million
One of the world’s most iconic racing cars has gone on sale in Switzerland and is expected to fetch in the region of $2 million. The Mille Miglia Maserati 200Si made its name back in the 1950s when it was driven to victory by Nando Pagliarini at races such as the Mille Miglia, Castell’Arquato Vernasca, Mont Ventoux, Aosta-Gran San Bernardo, Trieste-Opicina and Bologna-San Luca. Approximately 32 examples of the Maserati 200S and its evolutionary variant, the 200Si, were built for the factory’s works team and for drivers competing in the 2-litre class of late-1950s European and American sports-car racing. It was one of Maserati’s most successful models, combining user friendly handling, a powerful yet reliable powerplant and svelte bodywork which somehow just looked ‘right.’ It’s a car which is sought-after by collectors today for all the 6 CPR Magazine

same reasons: beauty, rarity and eligibility come together to make it an all-time classic. In 1959 the car was sold via the factory to Pete Lovely in the USA where it continued to race, albeit at a more sedate pace. Private enthusiasts and limited road use followed but ‘2415’ never disappeared from view. It occasionally appeared in historic events (the Mille Miglia and Monterey races, for example) and was restored by Mike Depugia circa 2000. At the turn of the century it returned to its birthplace to be cosseted in a private collection, taking part in the Mille Miglia (2005) before again retiring from front line action. The car is being offered for sale by Geneva-based company Kidson SA, an independent ‘boutique’ advisory firm for motor car collectors around the world. April 2011 7

Over 50 Rare Cars To Be Sold
A collection of rare vehicles will go ‘under the hammer’ on April 2, when the Strathmore Vintage Vehicle Club will auction off more than 50 vehicles and 1,000 lots of spare parts. Among the rare cars on offer are the 1935 British Salmson Drop Head Coupé, which has an estimate of between £9,000 and £16,000, a 1936 Hotchkiss Grand Sport Roadster, valued at around £14,000 and star billing goes to a 1939 McEvoy Steyr which is valued in the region of £16,000. The sale will be the first to be held at the club’s new headquarters building and there has already been a lot of interest in the sale with many enquiries from around the world. One potential buyer has already flown in by helicopter from the Isle of Man to inspect the collection. The cars are mostly non-runners and range in condition from total wrecks to solid cars that need a little work to obtain an MOT. The collection was the lifetime work of a man called William Cunningham. Mr Cunningham’s passion for cars took him all over the UK and even across to France where he would purchase the cars, often sight unseen. Prior to his death last year, he had agreed to let the club auction off the collection and club members have been working for several months to relocate the vehicles to the club building. Heritage Centre Open Day
Chance To See Vauxhall’s Classic Collection Famous British car maker Vauxhall will open its Heritage Centre to the public to mark the ‘Drive It Day’ celebrations of classic car motoring. On Sunday, April 17, the Centre will be open from 10:00am until 4:00pm for anyone to come along and have the opportunity to view Vauxhall’s own collection of classic cars. Organised by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, the day encourages owners to take their classic out on the road and celebrate motoring and heritage at its finest. Enthusiasts will have the opportunity to view the Vauxhall collection of over 50 cars, ranging from the 1900’s through to the present day. ‘Drive it Day’ represents the classic vehicle movement in the UK and owners are encouraged to drive their cars, anything old or interesting, and take to the road for one day to demonstrate their enthusiasm for classic cars. Robertson Racing Confirmed For Le Mans 24 Hour Debut USA-Based Ford GTs To Race In LM GTE-Am Class
The iconic Ford GT will return to La Sarthe in June after Robertson Racing were selected to make their maiden appearance at the world’s most famous endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Race organisers, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), confirmed that the team was among the 56 cars scheduled to start the twice-round-the-clock enduro in France on June 11-12. Robertson Racing was rewarded for its promising season in last year’s American Le Mans Series with an entry (#68) in the fiercely competitive LM GTE-Am class, while the team’s second Elan-powered, Michelin-shod Ford GT (#69) remains primed for action as the GT category’s first reserve, in the event of withdrawals elsewhere. ALMS regular David Robertson, who has been confirmed for the #68 car, revealed it was a dream come true to be contesting his first Le Mans 24 Hours. “Obviously I’m absolutely delighted to be contesting Le Mans for the first time. I remember wondering when racing as an amateur what a reasonable goal might be. Le Mans is certainly way beyond it! I’ll never forget as a 12-year-old boy watching Wide World of Sports’ coverage of Fords winning there, so to be taking our own GT is just a dream come true. In fact, we’d really love for Ford to get behind the project. Those victories of the 1960s weren’t just the greatest achievements in their history, but in American motorsport full stop.” 2011 might be Robertson Racing’s first trip to Le Mans, but a number of its key personnel already have experience of competing there. Chief Engineer Lee Penn masterminded Team LNT’s shock GT2 victory in 2006 and Team Manager Andrew ‘H’ Smith has helped run cars on four occasions. Most notable of all however is three-time Le Mans-winning driver Dick Barbour, who assists with Robertson Racing’s ALMS programme. Andrew ‘H’ Smith: “We were ecstatic when the ACO announced its line up. The whole team was at Sebring for the winter group test and you could feel the pride flowing through everyone. To get one car on the grid is a fantastic achievement for an independent team, so to have the second entry tantalisingly close too was an added bonus. Without wishing ill on any of our GT rivals, we would be absolutely ready to run two cars there.” Robertson Racing will be sending at least one Ford GT to the official Le Mans test day on April 24. A decision on the second car’s appearance will be made closer to the time.

Adjustable wings are a ‘test’ Says Whitmarsh
Changes Possible During Season CEO of McLaren Racing, Martin Whitmarsh, has said that the introduction of the controversial adjustable rear wings in F1 this season is “a test.” The McLaren boss said that new innovation was put in place after fans gave feedback saying they wanted to see more overtaking in races. That might sound like a good thing, but some industry insiders say that overtaking with assistance from the wing will be ‘too artificial.’ A group of drivers also say that controlling the wing, along with the recently introduced KERS device, will lead to excessively high cockpit workloads which could affect safety. Whitmarsh added that the instances of when a driver may use the wing in 2011 is “perhaps too complicated and not everyone will understand.” Formula 1 bosses will assess the wings as the season unfolds and have the option to change the regulations based on what happens in the early races. “We now have a system on the car by which we can make overtaking easier or more difficult,” said Whitmarsh. “Undoubtedly there will be the need for some fine-tuning. “This is a test,” he added. “If it is too complicated or it does not work, we can adjust it.”

F1 To Return To The ‘Ring’? Austrian Track Meets F1 Standards
The Austrian co-founder of Red Bull has played down reports that the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix could return at some point in the future. Dietrich Mateschitz has rebuilt the former A1-Ring circuit at Spielberg, Austria, and the track – now called the Red Bull Ring – has been approved to F1 standards by Charlie Whiting. There has been speculation that the recent problems at Bahrain and rumours that Australia’s commitment to hosting Formula 1 are diminishing might signal a return to racing in Austria. However, Mateschitz said that wasn’t necessarily the case. Speaking to APA news agency, the Austrian billionaire said: “The probability of F1 returning to Spielberg is more than minor.”
VW Rules Out Joining F1
German car manufacturer Volkswagen has ruled out the possibility of joining the world of Formula 1. The company had been seen as an ideal partner for current world champions, Red Bull, but comments made recently by Volkswagen’s Head of Technical Development, Ulrich Hackenberg, ended the speculation. Speaking about his company’s possible involvement with F1, Hackenberg said the is “nothing for us” while at the same time ruling out any connections with NASCAR too. Speaking to news agency Reuters, he added: “I should know what I am talking about, since it would come out of my budget!”
BBC Considers Whether To Drop F1 TV Coverage
Recent reports suggest that the BBC may axe Formula 1 from its programming schedule. The future of the sport’s coverage is being discussed by senior BBC managers in London, who are reportedly also considering whether to cease broadcasting the famous Wimbledon tennis tournament as well. The move comes after the BBC was instructed to cut its budget by 20% before 2014. The BBC apparently spends up to £40 million on the sport each year after it won the contract to air the races from rival commercial channel ITV. A BBC spokesman said: “We are looking at a range of ideas and it would be wrong to comment on what is speculation.”

Club Scheme For Young Race Drivers The MG Owners’ Club Racing Championship gets under way at Brands Hatch on 9/10th April, and will feature a wide range of drivers of all ages and abilities, but this year the club is going that ‘extra mile’ to help younger drivers discover the thrills of motorsport. The club says that the future success of the Championship depends on younger drivers getting involved and learning the skills of circuit racing in what is a very competitive yet cost effective series. In a bold initiative designed to support young drivers taking their first steps onto the motor racing ladder, the MG Owners’ Club is launching a scheme whereby young novice drivers entering the Championship will receive a number of benefits including some direct financial sponsorship to reduce the costs of race entry fees and running costs. The first driver to benefit from this initiative is Downham Market based MGF driver Sam Smith, who is making the move to circuit racing after a successful early career in karting. Sam made his race debut at Snetterton in September 2010 and showed himself to be a real talent in the making gaining two top ten finishes in a car that he’d never driven before. He was awarded the Oselli Star Drive trophy at that meeting after an impressive debut performance and is expected to add many more trophies to his collection during the 2011 season. Minor Club - Major Rally! The Morris Minor Owners’ Club will be returning to Knebworth House for this year’s national rally on July 2-3. The venue was last used by the club in 2003 and work is now underway to make this year’s event one to remember. Among the attractions on offer at Knebworth are: the historic house with parts dating back to Tudor times; park and gardens; organically-run walled kitchen garden; Gertrude Jekyll Herb Garden; a maze; a Dinosaur Trail, with 72 life-sized dinosaurs and a miniature railway. As if that wasn’t enough, the club will also be putting on a variety of events and displays which will include a Minor Million display, Members’ autojumble (Saturday only), Technical Tips seminars with Rob Thomasson, Arena events hosted by MMOC Branches, Inter-Branch Challenge, Concours Display and Judging and a Saturday night party. was the European centre of motoring, your claim might well be met with one or two raised eyebrows. However, that is exactly what Geneva becomes for just over one week in March each year, when the
colossal Geneva Motor Show takes place. For some reason the Geneva Motor Show has never caught the imagination of motoring enthusiasts around the world in the same way the Paris,

When you think about it, it is a rather strange place to hold such a massive car show because Switzerland has no car industry of its own. The Swiss event seems to have an air of exclusivity around it and many regard it purely as a ‘trade only’ show. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, although
two days are reserved for media only and it is those days that see the vast majority of the new models being unveiled. During the first media day there was a staggering 64 separate press conferences and any journalists covering the event would seriously have their work cut out if they wanted to catch the most important announcements.
When speaking to some of the executives at the show, one thing that quickly becomes clear is just how popular it is with the manufacturers…and there is good reason for this. As I mentioned earlier there is no native car industry and this is seen as a huge bonus by many exhibitors because ‘home country’ manufacturers tend to get better deals at April 2011 19

The cost of exhibiting is also considerably less expensive than at some of the other main motor shows, and in these cash strapped times ‘every penny saved is a penny earned.’
Supercar Trio So what was actually on offer at this year’s show? Well, predictably there was little in the way of classic cars, but the performance cars were there in abundance, and many of those had never been seen anywhere before. It would be difficult to pick out the three most significant new releases at the show, but if I was pressed I would have to say they came from Pagani, Ferrari and Lamborghini, so 20 CPR Magazine
let’s take a closer look at each one of those in turn. From Pagani, it was the first time the new Huayra had been seen in public…and boy did it look good! A beaming Horacio Pagani – the company founder – obviously thought so too. Speaking at the launch, he said: Michelangelo once
said that perfection is shown in the details and that is what we have tried to follow. We have improved all the details and this car is very easy to drive and very comfortable on longer journeys.” Mr Pagani was also keen to talk up the aerodynamic properties of the Huayra. The car is fitted with

The Ferrari FF is another car we covered in the last issue, and while I wasn’t convinced when I saw the initial press photos, I’m pleased to say that it does indeed look much better in the flesh. I was keen to find out which particular market the FF is being pitched at and put the question to one of Ferrari’s staff. It was carefully explained that by creating a four-seat, four-wheel-drive car, Ferrari hoped the car would be more appealing to those people who desired a performance car, but who wanted the practically not found in the Italian manufacturer’s other models. 6.5 litre engine wrapped in a super-light carbon fibre body and looks that kill. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelman said: It’s a completely new car. It’s a jump of two generations because if we speak about a ‘supersports’ car it’s all about design and performance. The design is revolutionary, but it
is still easily recognisable as a Lamborghini.” From the front, the Aventador looks cool, a bit like a Ferrari Italia but with angles instead of curves, but it’s when you walk around the back of the car you get the biggest surprise. The rear end looks like it was designed on an alien planet – it’s like Cylon Raider meets Stealth Fighter!
In fact, some of the design features were almost certainly inspired by the F-22 Raptor jet fighter, particularly the ‘saw tooth’ patterns where the engine cover meets the rear wings. Winkelman more or less confirmed this by saying: “Our inspiration in terms of design is coming from fighter jets!” April 2011 23

The price is pretty frightening too, at least to a mere mortal like me, but then I suppose £242,280 is around the standard ‘supercar’ price tag these days. One thing that all three of these new cars have in common, apart from being Italian, is…how shall I put it…the names are a bit naff. Telling your mates down the pub that you have just “bought an FF” will hardly register on the ‘cool scale’ and an Aventador sounds a bit like the name of an air conditioning system in somebody’s office.
As for Huayra, if you say that while still in the previously mentioned pub, your friends will probably think you’ve had too much to drink and call you a taxi. Cars like these should have ‘uber-cool’ names; Ferrari nailed it with the Italia and Lamborghini with the Diablo, but it seems that the people tasked with choosing names for the new models

Vantage S Anyway, back to the show. Another car that was unveiled in Geneva was the Aston Martin V8 Vantage S.
Available as both a convertible and a GT Coupé, the new version of the Vantage is powered by a 430bhp 4.7 litre V8 engine giving it 20bhp more than the Vantage N24 and 30bhp over the N400 special editions. The Vantage S is also fitted with an allnew ‘Sportshift II’ sevenspeed automated manual transmission, which the maker
claims will allow for “slingshot acceleration through the gears.” On the outside it’s easily recognisable as a Vantage, although there have been a few subtle tweaks such as a new front bumper with its larger air intake feeding the engine and brakes and a carbon fibre splitter, and the rear end has a new bumper assembly too. eye was the Spanish-built GTA Spano. This attractive ‘supercar’ is fitted with an 8.3 litre V10 engine producing 780hp, and that, says the manufacturer, will be enough to propel the car at a speed of over 350kmh and give a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds. The Spano also has a couple of neat gadgets to help keep the sun out of your eyes. It uses liquid crystal technology to automatically darken the glass on the car and this can be adjusted to set whatever light-level you require. The sunvisors use the same system and will automatically darken when needed. The 26 CPR Magazine
manufacturer says that only 99 Spanos will be built, so if you want one you’d better be quick. Among the other performance car highlights at Geneva was the Gumpert Tornante by Touring – a 4.2-litre twinturbocharged V8 powered car which produces 700hp. Then there was the Koenigsegg Agera R which is powered by an all-aluminium 5.0-litre V8 fitted with twin turbos and pumps out an impressive 1,099bhp at 6900rpm. The 0-62mph time is said to be just 2.9secs, while the claimed top speed is 275mph. There was also a rather
smart looking concept car from Saab…yes, Saab! The Swedish car maker known best for its slightly dowdy saloons was offering something that looked like it could compete with any of the Italian ‘supercars.’ Sadly, its looks are about the only thing that could compete with the exotic machines. The Phoenix combines what Saab calls its ‘aeromotional’ design with an advanced petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain, and it is power comes from a 1.6 litre engine producing just 200hp. The Phoenix is fitted with Saab’s eXWD system which uses regenerative braking to charge

a small battery pack which then provides 25kW (34hp) of power to the rear wheels via a small electric motor. All clever stuff, but unfortunately there are no plans to put the Phoenix into production which is a shame, because while it certainly doesn’t have ‘supercar performance, it sure does look good! The 81st Geneva Motor Show was hailed as a success by manufacturers and public alike. An amazing 735,000 visitors attended the show which marked a 6% increase over the 2010 figure. Next year’s show is scheduled to take place on March 8-18.

12 Hours Of The 2011 American Le Mans Series kicked off in spectacular style at the Sebring International Raceway on March 19, setting the tone for what should be an excellent year of racing. Words: Phil Sullivan - Photos: James Boone.

he 2011 American Le Mans Series got of cars racing at Sebring, 20 of the entrants are to a flying start on March 19, when the competing in the ILMC series, including Level annual ’12 Hours of Sebring’ race was 5 Motorsports (LMP2) and Krohn Racing (GTE Am). held at the Sebring International Raceway Eleven LMP1 entries dotted the Sebring entry in Florida. In addition, Team ORECA Matmut gave the governing body of the Le Mans 24 Hours an outing to its 2010-spec Peugeot 908 HDi event. The 2011 ILMC will consist of seven FAP. The Peugeot Sport cars were hotly tipped races including the Petit Le Mans in Atlanta, and championships will be awarded to favourites to win the race, and while it was manufacturers and teams in the LMP1, LMP2, indeed a Peugeot that crossed the line first… GTE Am and GTE Pro categories. Loic’s codrivers were Nicolas Lapierre and ex-Formula 1 driver Olivier Panis. Speaking after the race, Duval said: “We attacked a lot! At the beginning, we probably had more difficulties with the traffic than others, but we had a good rhythm. When it was time to start my last stint, I was really stressing. To be honest, I hadn’t imagined that I would be in that position!

One of the great success stories of this year’s race was the Robertson Racing Team Ford GT Mk7 finishing 8th in the GT Class - the highest place of any independant team! With ten laps to go, things got better. I wasn’t taking any risks and I knew it was going to happen. I still don’t believe what’s happened! I think we did something big and it will sink in during the coming days. And to share in this victory with the team and my team mates is just great!“ Olivier Panis added: “I’ve won before with the Team ORECA-Matmut, but this time it’s not the same. We had a great car in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP. We’ve been waiting for this for a long time. It’s a great reward for everyone.
I’d like to thank Hugues, the crew and my teammates, who were excellent. Sebring will stay an important moment in my career. Now, we need to continue working to arrive ready at Spa and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This first place, we didn’t luck into it, we went to get it!” The works Peugeots dominated the early laps, threatening to leave Oreca Peugeot and the two Audi Sport Team cars behind, but a string of safety car incidents kept the group packed tightly together. Things quickly
started to unravel for the #01 Audi when Mike Rockenfeller picked up two successive punctures that resulted in them dropping seven laps off the pace. Then Audi #02 and Peugeot #07 hit problems which again rearranged the leader board. Four hours into the race, Spanish driver Marc Gene tried to pass a car down the inside of the final corner. The ensuing collision sent Audi #02 – driven by Dindo Capello, Allan McNish and Tom Kristensen – spinning across the track. Luckily, both cars April 2011 33

managed to rejoin, and while they were out of contention for this race, they were still competing for ILMC points. The crash made the event a three car race, between the Team ORECA-Matmut 908 HDI FAP, the remaining works Peugeot 908 and Highcroft Racing’s HPD ARX-01e, which ultimately was won by the ORECA-Matmut car. One GT class team that deserves a very honourable mention is the Robertson
Racing Team which was running two Ford GT Mk7s in the race. Husband and wife duo David and Andrea Robertson, along with codriver Colin Said in the #40 car, finished a creditable 26th overall and 8th in the GT Class – the highest placing by any non-works or works supported team. The team’s other #04 car sadly had to retire with mechanical problems just one and a half hours before the

The Robertson Racing team has also just announced that it will be running its #40 car at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour Race in June, so it’s shaping up to be a big year for this adventurous independent team. All in all, it was a great way to start the new ALMS season. The next race takes place at Long Beach in California on April 16, and I for one can’t wait. See you there!

he 36th annual Retromobile show was held on January 22-31, at the Expo Porte De Versailles in Paris, France. The much anticipated show attracted classic car enthusiasts from all over the world, and despite the harsh economic climate, visitor numbers seemed to be up on last year. The star of the show was a 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia which was recovered from the bottom of a lake in Italy last summer. The badly decayed car was sold during the show at the Bonham’s auction and fetched a staggering £228,000 ($350,000). It was purchased by the Mullin Museum in Oxnard, California, which intends to put the car on display in its current unrestored state. Retromobile has an air of elegance and class that is often lacking at other major car shows and the show is well supported by many of the major manufacturers. Among these were Citroen who were celebrating 40 years of the SM; Mercedes Benz were showing off a stunning 300SL ‘Gull-Wing’ prototype and Peugeot also impressed visitors with a beautiful 1930s 601 hard-top retractable. As car shows go, they don’t get much better than this! Next year’s show takes place on February 1-5, 2012...don’t miss it!

BMW 2002
Some say that the BMW 2002 was the car that shaped the future success of the German manufacturer and that it is one of the most famous BMWs ever built. Simon Hazeldine takes a closer look at this wonderful ‘Bavarian Beauty.’

Mercedes were often thought of as upmarket vehicles favoured by diplomats and foreign dignitaries. BMW, a name that we take for granted today, had yet to really establish itself in the UK market. Up until that decade, the German company was perhaps best known for the BMW Isetta ‘bubble-car’ which gained a ‘cult’ following during the 1960s.
New Class One of the models BMW produced in the 1970s was the 2002, a car which would ultimately help establish the German manufacturer as a producer of high-quality ‘sports saloons’ and some might say it was largely responsible for shaping what the company is today. The 2002 was the culmination of BMW’s ‘Neue Klasse’ (New
Class) series of cars, the first of which was introduced in 1962. This was the rather more pedestrian BMW 1500; a four-door saloon powered by BMW’s 4-cylinder 1,499cc M10 engine. The 1500 later evolved into the 1600 and 1800 models, both of which had similar four-door bodies. The cars recorded modest sales and it was BMW’s US importer Max Hoffman that April 2011 47

suggested that a restyled two-door version of the car would have greater appeal. The manufacturer agreed and enlisted the services of widely respected designer Giovanni Michelotti, who had designed the Triumph Spitfire and TR4 among others, to recreate 48 CPR Magazine
the bodywork. The result was the BMW 1600-2, or 1602 as it came to be known, and it made its first public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966. Natural progression took its course and it wasn’t long before the 1600 engine was replaced
Three Generations One man who certainly appreciates the 2002’s finer qualities is John Paulding. John has owned his car since 1979 when he used it as his everyday car. Back then, it was just a means of getting from A to B, but now it is so much more than that…it’s is part of the family. John is someone who isn’t afraid to make improvements to his car if he thinks it will make it more ‘driver friendly,’ and as a result, the 2002 has been considerably ‘accessorized.’ The BMW 2002 was built in three distinct ‘generations.’ The first generation was

built from 1968 to 1971, the second from 1971 to 1973 and the third from 1973 until production ceased in 1976. John’s car was built in 1973 and is a second generation car, though some of the modifications made over the years have left it looking more like a third generation car. When the front panel was damaged in an accident, the only replacement part John could find was for a later ‘third generation’ car which had a plastic grille in place of the earlier metal one. With nothing else available, John had no option but to fit the part. This of course made the rear end look rather out of place, so John opted to change the rear panel for a later spec part too. Originally the rear panel was fitted with circular light units, but the later cars used
Ultra-rare lamp wipers were a factory option. square tail lights. While he was at it, he made a few changes to the front lighting too. The headlights currently fitted are US-spec units which John found in a breakers yard in Suffolk. These differ from the UK lights which used sealed-beam units.
They also have tiny wipers fitted to them which were an original option from Bosch and John has never seen another set of them on any other car. They came with a pair of tiny chrome washer jets which are located on the front bumper. The wipers work well, but April 2011 49

John has yet to find a set of replacement rubber blades. The front fog lights are off a much more modern car, but they still have a BMW connection. They are off one of the new style Minis, currently being produced by BMW and the relays even 50 CPR Magazine
have tiny BMW logos printed on them. Under The Bonnet The engine is standard spec and was rebuilt in the early 1990s. Having said that, the engine is about the only standard item under the
bonnet! The red powder coated rocker cover looks fantastic, and the air filter housing, also finished in red, contains a K&N performance filter. The carburettor lurking underneath the filter is also non-standard and is actually from an automatic 2002, the same type fitted to the early 3-series BMWs such as the 318 and 320. It has electric choke and pre-heater and John reckons it is the best carburettor you can fit. The next step is to fit custom built throttle-bodies and convert the car to full EFi fuel injection, something John is already planning for the future. To improve the ignition system, John has fitted a Lumenition Optronic kit which replaces the

points in the distributor with an ‘electric eye’ and rotor. The ‘bob-weights’ have also been welded in place inside the distributor and the advance/ retard is now controlled by a ‘Supachips’ engine mapping system. This clever bit of kit allows John to optimise the performance by simply plugging a laptop computer into the control box and setting the desired configuration on screen. The car is fitted with silicone plug leads, which unlike traditional copper core leads, won’t absorb moisture and degrade over a period of time. However, John did experience problems with them arcing across and after a little experimentation, he solved the problem by fitting DEI heat

insulation sleeves. He also fitted a heat insulation blanket which has helped eliminate one of the common problems often associated with the M10 engine. The way the engine has been designed means that the spark plugs are right next to the exhaust
manifold so the plugs can get very hot; the blanket prevents this from happening and generally keeps the under bonnet temperature to an acceptable level. A full stainless steel exhaust system allows the exhaust gasses to flow freely and adds a little

Most Collectable? The BMW 2002 came in a variety of different models. Among them were the 2002 Tii, a Cabriolet, a 2002 Touring and even a Turbo version. The powerful, fuelinjected Tii cars produced 130hp at 5,800rpm, could hit speeds of 130mph and are highly sought after by collectors. The Tii cars also had larger front brake discs, a larger diameter exhaust manifold and a bigger brake master cylinder. Oh, and it had an interior clock too!
Did You Know... Austrian racing driver Dieter Quester raced a BMW 2002 in the European Rally Championships in 1968, finishing 1st overall in Division 3 with a score of 42.5 points. The following year he picked up 46.5 points and won the division again. Quester went on to race F2 cars and even had a brief stint in F1. 52 CPR Magazine

John’s car has a 5-speed gearbox fitted in place of the original 4-speed unit. extra horsepower too. Keeping Cool One of the major additions John has made to the car was to fit an air conditioning system. This fits in rather neatly just behind the radiator; in fact the whole installation is surprisingly tidy and looks like it could have been installed at the factory. He obtained a pair of marker lights that were fitted on the rear wings of the US-spec 2002s and ran the wiring into each door, connected them up and they work brilliantly.

them with a pair of panels from a 2002 LUX. These had map pockets built into them, which are absent on the standard panels, and also had a decorative wooden finisher, however John thought the wood looked rather out of place so he covered it in
Exterior Despite John’s desire to modify and make improvements, one area he has left more or less as the designer intended is the bodywork. I have already mentioned that the front and rear panels were changed out of necessity, but those were the only major changes that have been made. There have been a few other subtle tweaks though, such as the door

mirrors, which are authentic to the car’s era, but are in fact from an S-Type Jaguar. John found them in a breaker’s yard and sent them away to be re-chromed and the finished result is excellent. The rear fog lights came from a Volkswagen Transporter van but John has reworked them so they now house a cluster of LEDs in place of the original bulbs. Again, they work brilliantly, far better than the original lights. On the boot lid is a ‘turbostyle’ rear spoiler. This is a reproduction plastic item, where as the factory part was made from rubber. The rubber spoilers are no longer available, and while the plastic item looks fine to my easily pleased eyes, John isn’t happy with it. However, as always, he has a plan; he has
found a company that will coat the spoiler in rubber, which should give it a more authentic appearance. Suspension The BMW 2002 had pretty good handling from the day it left the factory, but John being the perfectionist he is
thought there was still room for improvement. He obtained a set of Gaz fully adjustable coil-over kits and fitted the struts to both the front and rear ends of the car. These have transformed the handling and the 02 positively bites into the road on corners. They do give the car a slightly LEDs fitted inside the rear fog lamps.

firmer ride, but it certainly isn’t uncomfortable. The rear coil-over is also given additional support from a strutbrace which runs between the two mounting points inside the boot. A brace will soon be added to the front struts too, once the EFi conversion has been completed. The standard factory steel wheels have been replaced by a set of BMW alloys which John thinks came from an early 3-series car. They look great and are shod with 185/70 R13 tyres which are slightly wider than the original 165s. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that changing the tyre size was just a straightforward swap-over. The wider tyres caught on the bodywork at the rear end and John got around the problem by raising the boot floor by

about half an inch. New Class John’s 2002 is a fantastic example of what a ‘retro’ car can be. It has been modified to make it a more driveable car but everything has been done sympathetically. He has avoided the temptation to fit big flared wheel arches

and an overly loud exhaust, concentrating instead on improvements to handling, comfort and performance. From the outside, it still looks beautiful…just as Mr Michelotti intended. The BMW 2002 played a big part in transforming the manufacturer from a small German car maker into one of the biggest

Race Retro - the event that showcases the very best of Historic Motorsport was held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, on February 25-27. Simon Hazeldine called in to catch all the action.

ace Retro, the annual show that features some of the biggest names in historic motorsport, was held at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, on February 25-27. Each year it brings together hundreds of exhibitors, all eager to part with their wares to the many eager visitors looking to grab a bargain. One of the main themes of this year’s show was the 50th anniversary of the E-Type Jaguar and perhaps unsurprisingly there were several stunning examples of the marque on show. Two immaculate examples wearing hardtops and race numbers greeted visitors as they walked through the main foyer near the show entrance. One in British Racing Green, the other in red; both cars offering just a taste of what awaited inside the halls. The man responsible for developing
More Jaguars on display in the main halls. the E-Type – Norman Dewis – was also at the show, chatting with visitors and signing autographs. However, the E-Type wasn’t the only ‘big cat’ on display showing off its racing heritage; there was also an XK120, C-Type, D-Type, Mk2
Saloons, an XJ12C, the ‘Silk Cut’ XJR and even a Jaguar R3 Formula 1 car which was raced by Eddie Irvine. Most of the Jaguars were in Hall 2 which was called the ‘Racing and Speed Hall.’ It was perhaps this particular hall that housed the most April 2011 61
The legenday Lotus Type 25. interesting exhibits…to my mind at least. On the McGurk Performance Cars stand there was a rather tasty Ferrari F50 and an equally tidy Porsche 356 convertible; a nice contrast of old and new. In the same hall was also a rather striking Spice SE89 Pontiac which raced between 1989 and 1991 in the IMSA GT Championship. The car was also twice driven by Hollywood legend Paul Newman. On the Historic Grand Prix Cars stand was a stunning 1962 Lotus Type 25. The Colin Chapman designed Type 25 was a revolutionary machine in its day, being the first fully stressed monocoque chassis to appear in Formula 1. Racing legend Jim Clark raced a Type 25 and won seven of the ten championship races 62 CPR Magazine
The Spice SE89 Pontiac driven by Paul Newman. in 1963, giving him his first F1 drivers’ title and Lotus the constructors’ championship. Racing cars really don’t get much more iconic than this! Across in Hall 1 (yep, we started in two…and then moved to one!) were the
exhibitors offering technical innovations and bits to make your car go faster. There were less of the highly polished display cars in this hall as you might expect, but still there was plenty to catch your eye. One such display was the

Rally Monte Carlo Centenary stand which featured some beautiful cars, among which were an ex-works Triumph TR3A (WVC 247) and a wonderfully presented Standard 10. These were flanked by a 1968 Mini Cooper S 1275 which claimed third place overall in the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally. The car was crewed by Rauno Aaltonen and Henry Liddon and actually finished ahead of Mini ‘supremo’ Paddy Hopkirk who finished the race in fifth place. Liddon had previously been Hopkirk’s co-driver since 1964. Also on the ‘Monte’ stand was a stunning 1931 Invicta which was crewed by Donald Healey, Lewis Pearce and Humphrey Symonds and finished the race first overall. In something of a contrast, next to this exquisite piece of automotive history was a stand celebrating Lancia’s involvement in world rallying. On this stand was a (mostly) blue Lancia Stratos. I am fairly sure I have seen this car taking part in various historic rallies over the years, only back then it was fitted with yellow wheels which didn’t

look too bad. At Race Retro it was sporting some hideous bright pink alloys which did the car no favours at all. Still, cars like this are all about speed, and the bodywork or external appearance is usually influenced by the team’s sponsors, so I’ll have to give them the benefit of the doubt this time. I’m sure the ‘taste police’ will catch up with them eventually! Another rather striking car on 64 CPR Magazine
display in Hall 1 was the bright orange Ford Mustang ‘Mach 1’ on the Endurance Rally Association stand. The car was there to promote the 2012 Trans-America ‘New York to Alaska’ rally, and if ever there was a ‘road run’ to test a car’s reliability, this is it! Hall 3 seemed to contain a real ‘mish-mash’ of themes. It was where those strange twowheeled machines were on show, and although not a fan
of them myself, you still had to admire the quality of finish on most of the bikes. Over on the far side of the hall was a huge American themed diner and if the size of the queue was anything to go by, the food on offer must have been good. I opted to grab a burger and a Coke from a vendor in Hall 4, and tasty as it was, it wasn’t worth the £7.00 I had to pay for it. Maybe that was why I didn’t have to queue! Talking of Hall 4, this was even stranger than Hall 3, and it
Classic motorcycles on display in Hall 3. took on the appearance of a massive motoring themed ‘car boot’ sale. What might have appeared as piles of junk to many people, probably contained those rare and elusive parts that are vital to complete that difficult project at home in the garage. One stall was selling a huge variety of second-hand motoring books and the owner certainly had a sense of humour. When one potential customer picked up a driver autobiography and asked if this was the guy that raced for XY & Z back in the 1950s, the proprietor responded by saying: “I dunno mate…I sell books; I don’t give history lessons!”
Hall 4 also contained a display of cars from the Lancia Motor Club and the ‘Parc Ferme’ for the live action rally stage cars. The latter gave visitors a chance to get up close to
some of the vehicles that had campaigned fearlessly as ‘works cars’ in years gone by, many of which are now part of the historic rallying scene. There were some very familiar sights to those of us old enough to remember them, such as the Triumph TR7s in Unipart colours and the MkII Ford Escort in its Rothmans livery. Outside, these same cars were being put through their paces on a ‘live rally stage’ which saw the cars racing around the grounds of Stoneleigh Hall in front of spectators. It has to be said that the weather on the Saturday when I was there was perfect for rallying – four seasons in one day! It was grey and overcast and the light drizzle allowed the cars to go around the corners sideways with considerable ease. It isn’t often that you get a chance to see so many famous Group B rally cars in one place, and seeing them all in ‘action’ was a treat not to be missed. There was also lots of historic karting action too, and on the Sunday former F1 driver Johnny Herbert could be seen

The Caterham Driving Experience certainly produced plenty of tyre smoke! hurling a retro kart around the track. Very entertaining, but next year I’ll remember to take an umbrella! Also outside the main hall was the Caterham Driving Experience. This was basically the same set up that recently featured at the Autosport Show in Birmingham, where visitors could pay a small fee to ride as a passenger in a Caterham, while the driver did his best to make them dizzy. It certainly looked like lots of fun, as smoke poured from the Caterham’s protesting tyres as it performed ‘doughnuts’ around a set of strategically placed barrels. Another eagerly awaited highlight of Race Retro was the H&H classic auction which was held in Stoneleigh’s Warwick Hall. A stunning display of Lancia Stratos cars outside the main entrance. this issue, but the top seller was a stunning 1950 Healey Silverstone which had been in the same ownership for the last 26 year. There was a lot of interest in this particular lot, but the hammer eventually fell when bidding peaked at £121,000. Race Retro was an interesting show and there was plenty to interest the die-hard fans of historic motorsport. I felt the entrance prices were perhaps a little steep for what the show offered. The organisers of events like this need to remember that 90% of the exhibitors are trying to sell something, so effectively Race Retro is a large motoring themed shopping mall and they are charging the ‘shoppers’ quite a high price to come in and spend their money. The live rally stage provided visitors with some value for money because it was entertaining. If shows such
Ex-Eddie Irvine Jaguar R3 Formula 1 car. as Race Retro want to charge more than a token entrance fee, they need to provide a lot more entertainment if they want visitors to keep coming back year after year. Stoneleigh Park as a venue also needs looking at. With several car related shows, such as the MG and Triumph spares days and Race Retro, taking place here during February and March, it is hardly unsurprising that the grass car parks quickly turn into a swampy, unusable mess. When I arrived the main car park had been closed and I
had to queue up for 45 minutes just to get on the site! I strongly believe that if Stoneleigh wants to continue to host these shows it should invest some money into concreting over the grass car parks, so at least they are usable all year round. If you like historic motorsport, Race Retro is an excellent show which is not to be missed, especially if you want to pick up some new parts or equipment for you car before the new season starts. Just remember to take your ‘wellies’ and an umbrella! April 2011 67

The Coventry Transport Museum
Coventry was once England’s ‘Motor City’ and the centre of car production in the UK. Simon Hazeldine visits the amazing Coventry Transport Museum which houses some of the Britain’s best automotive treasures.
I
t’s probably fair to say that the city of Coventry is the spiritual home of British motoring. For decades it was England’s ‘Motor City,’ the UK’s equivalent of Detroit, and home to some of the biggest names in automotive history such as Jaguar, Triumph, Rover, Alvis, Armstrong Siddeley, Allard, Daimler, 74 CPR Magazine
Hillman, Humber, Riley, Standard and many more. In fact over 100 manufacturers have been based in or around the city since the late 1800s and one can only guess at how many millions of cars have been built there over the years. Sadly, all that is now just a distant memory. One by one
the factories closed as the manufacturers either moved production elsewhere or simply went out of business. Hundreds of thousands of skilled workers found themselves out of work and having to adapt to other lines of work or leave the area and move to wherever they could find employment.

However, the industry left behind a rich heritage and the people of Coventry are justifiably proud of what they achieved, so it is fitting that the city should host a museum dedicated to the varied transport produced in the area, from bicycles to buses…and of course cars. Heart of the City The Coventry Transport Museum is located right in the heart of the city centre.
Getting there is a breeze if you are using public transport as the city’s bus station is just across the road from the museum. Arriving by car can be a little more challenging, as you might have to battle your way through heavy traffic and then fight with the shoppers for parking spaces in the surrounding car parks. Thankfully, there are several car parks within easy walking distance of the museum, so this shouldn’t present too
much of a problem. The façade of the museum itself is impressive; a large triangular paved area leads up to a modern purpose built, glass-fronted building. It looks modern, clean and spacious; quite a contrast to many of the dusty and rather dated museums I have visited over the years. The fresh, modern feel continues as you walk through the main doors – everything is immaculate! If it wasn’t for April 2011 75

the presence of several ex-Le Mans cars near the entrance it would be easy to believe that you had accidentally walked into an upmarket office building.

There is no need to queue to get in; there is no ticket desk either. Once inside you are free to wander wherever your fancy takes you and I figured that as the Le Mans cars were
right in front of me, I might as well start there. This is actually a temporary exhibition and separate from the main museum. ‘Le Mans through the ages’ charts the history of the Le Mans 24 hour race and features some of the cars that have campaigned on the famous French circuit. Among the cars on display are a 1970 Lola T297 and a 1987 Porsche 962 owned by avid car collector and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason. There is also the ‘Silk Cut’ Jaguar XJR-9 which won the race in 1988, 2001 Bentley EXP8, a 2002 Audi R8 Le Mans and a 2002 Spyker C8 Double 12 Le Mans. Some of the older machines on display are simply exquisite,

such as the 1931 Bentley 4.5 litre Tourer, the 1929 Lea Francis Hyper and a genuine ex-works Triumph Spitfire Mk1 that competed at Le Mans in 1964 and 1965. This is serious automotive treasure… and I haven’t even gone into the main museum yet! When I eventually tear myself away from the Le Mans cars, I head up a small flight of steps which leads to the main exhibition halls. (I should point out that there is also a ramp near the steps and the whole museum is very ‘wheelchair friendly,’ so don’t be put off by the steps.) but all this required was giving the first part of my postcode to the friendly staff member on duty. And that was it – no money was asked for or changed hands; entry to the Coventry Transport Museum is

completely free of charge! Most of the vehicles in the museum were either built in Coventry or have connections with the city, and sure enough the first cars you see as you enter the museum are a 1904
6hp Rover, a 1910 Maudslay 32hp Tourer and a 1901 7hp Payne & Bates all of which were built a mere ‘stones throw’ from the museum entrance. The cars are in beautiful condition too and look like they rolled out of the factories yesterday, not over a hundred years ago. Moving on, the visitor is confronted with more of the same; exceptionally rare cars in pristine condition: a 1923 Albatross, a 1909 Rover complete with shield-shaped radiator grille, a 1925 Lea Francis, a 1913 Swift Cyclecar and a 1920 Alvis, each one with a detailed caption board placed carefully in front of them. Landmark Gallery From there you move into the Landmark Gallery which has

Not only does it contain yet more priceless motoring artefacts, many of them are set period Coventry ‘street scenes’ which are surprisingly realistic. The days when motor cars faced their biggest competition from four-legged beasts are faithfully recreated, as vintage bicycles and cars jostle for space while the eerie sound of an invisible blacksmith hammers hot iron into shape. Around the corner, you walk along the cobbled street before stepping into the local ‘ale house’ where a friendly barman beckons you towards the bar while a couple of regulars enjoy a ‘pint’ in the corner. Parked outside the pub and blacksmiths are a 1904 Humber Olympia Forecar and a 1910 Standard, the latter containing some rather jolly looking occupants. A little further on and you step into a 1920s Standard car factory which gives you April 2011 79

an idea as to just how the earliest cars were made. A small production line shows Standard cars being hand-built while the ancient ‘clocking-in machine’ on the wall waits patiently for the workers to finish their shift. Time Travelling As you walk on, you get a sense that you are moving 80 CPR Magazine
through time as the cars gradually get more modern. A small village garage is faithfully recreated and shows two dedicated mechanics working on an Austin Seven. Of course it’s not long before you time-travelling stroll takes you into Coventry’s darkest period. During World War Two, the city was heavily bombed as part of Hitler’s
‘Blitz’ campaign. The plan was to knock out large chunks of Britain’s industrial capability and disrupt the supply of military arms and equipment. In reality, many of the bombs fell on civilian areas. On the night of November 14, 1940, more than 4,000 homes in Coventry were destroyed, along with around three quarters of the city’s factories. Around 600 people were killed and the city’s famous Cathedral was destroyed after it was hit by numerous incendiary bombs. The ruins of the bombed out cathedral still stand to this day just around the corner from the museum and are well worth a look. The Coventry Blitz display doesn’t feature much in the way of vehicles, but it does give a good representation of what life was like during

those dark days. Two men stand outside a burned and blackened building as smoke drifts from the ruins. Further along, two soldiers tackle an unexploded bomb that has come through the roof of a garage workshop. The low lighting adds considerably to the overall dramatic effect inside these exhibitions, so much so that I saw a few young children refuse to go into the Blitz display. ‘Boomtown’ Leaving World War Two behind, we step into ‘Boomtown,’ an exhibition that charts Coventry’s motor industry in its heyday during the 1950s, 60s and 70s. Again, the quality of the displays is superb and a big part of it is occupied by cars from one of the city’s most famous manufacturers April 2011 81
The absolutely stunning Triumph Italia. something that the Coventry Transport Museum excels at; it doesn’t just park the cars in stuffy halls like many other museums do, it creates an experience for the visitor. It makes the cars come alive and immerses you in their history. As I said earlier, I have been to many museums, but I have never been to one that presents its exhibits as well as this one.

Among the cars on display are a Triumph TR2, a Stag, GT6, a Spitfire MkIII, a TR7, a 2500TC Police car and a stunning red Triumph Italia sits centre-stage on a revolving turn-table. The cobbled streets of the previous exhibitions have now been replaced by a tarmac road, complete with reflective road 82 CPR Magazine
studs and white lines. A mock sewer pipe houses a Morris Mini in a great recreation of a scene from the 1969 film, The Italian Job, which starred Michael Caine. The song ‘Self Preservation Society’ booms from the tunnel and the period music really make you feel like you are back in the 60s! I have to say that this is

houses immaculate examples of a Mk1 Ford Escort, a Triumph Dolomite and an Austin Allegro to represent just some of the cars built in that era. From ‘Boomtown’ our journey leads us into the Spirit of Speed Gallery. If you still had any lingering doubts as to the quality of the exhibits on show, just look in here, for you will find none other than the two fastest ‘cars’ in the world – Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC. These are not mock-ups, they are the ‘real deal.’

Record Breakers In 1983 Richard Noble drove Thrust 2 and set a new Land Speed Record of 633.468mph and the first section of this display tells the story of this record attempt. A cinema style screen hanging over Thrust 2 shows a film about speed records and the lighting is kept low so visitors can see the film. April 2011 83

is made worse in the latter because it is displayed in a sort of ‘Nissen hut,’ and while the walkway allows you to get up close to the machine, it is almost impossible to capture the whole thing in a photograph. Exhibits of this stature should be well and truly in the spotlight rather than lurking in the shadows. But then, they are exceptionally large machines, and giving them extra space would almost certainly mean losing other exhibits, so maybe this compromise is the best solution. The next gallery showcases the museum’s model collection where over 20,000 items are displayed from plastic kits to expensive, detailed scale replicas. This collection was the work of a man called Tibor Reich who ran a textile business in Stafford, and if your kids don’t appreciate the real cars, they’ll just love this! It is split over two floors and you follow the stairs to the upper floor where more fullsize vehicles await. Ghost Town

can also get a taste of Thrust SSC’s speed for themselves by riding in a simulator which is part of the exhibition. If I had to find fault with any of the exhibitions at this museum, then I would have to say that the low lighting in the Thrust 2 hall doesn’t really allow you to appreciate the car fully and the same problem exists in the Thrust SSC hall. It

displayed in this exhibition, but most of the cars are Rovers, Jaguars or Peugeots. That last name might seem like a strange one to include, but the French manufacturer did indeed produce many cars in Coventry at its plant in Ryton. In fact, the last car was built there as recently as 2006, but the company closed the plant later that same year and it was demolished in 2007. There is still some car production in the area though. Last year Dutch ‘supercar’ builder Spyker transferred assembly of its C8 Aileron car to the city, and only last month, the company tasked with the assembly work announced it was planning to buy Spyker from its current owners. The ‘Ghost Town’ gallery left me with a lasting impression of just how great a loss the motor industry was to this city. While its decline was almost inevitable, mostly due to cheap overseas labour, it is still heartbreaking to think of all that skill and craftsmanship going to waste.

Motorsport Cars The next room contained the Motorsport Gallery, which as the name suggests, was crammed full of racing cars. The first car I see is a beautiful 1955 Maserati 250F which is parked next to a much more
modern racer – a 1993 Jaguar R4 Formula1 car. It is a strange pairing, but illustrates beautifully how technology evolved over a 40 year period. Two bright yellow cars come into view next; a 1967 Lola T70 Mk3 Coupé and a stunning 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB. A selection of other cars on display includes a Porsche
911, another Lola T70, a 1967 4WD Techcraft BRM that campaigned successfully as a hill-climber, a 1977 Tyrell P34 ‘six-wheeler’ and a WRC Peugeot 206.Alongside some of the cars are examples of race engines, including the famous Coventry Climax 1.5 litre V8 that was used in Lotus, Cooper and Brabham F1 cars during the 1960s. on loan from Martin Stretton Racing and are still used in historic race events. This means that the exhibits on display are constantly changing, so always check before setting out if you are
interested in one specific car. It would be a shame to get there and find it has gone. Next-door to the Motorsport Gallery is the Curator’s Choice Gallery. As its name suggests, it contains a selection of cars that have been chosen by the museum’s curator as particular favourites. Among these cars are an Aston Martin DB7 prototype, a DMC De Lorean, a 1913
Morris Oxford, a bright pink ‘Barbie’ Jaguar XJS, a Rover P5 and a rather striking MGA Developments Ltd ‘Baltic’ concept car. Opposite the cars is a small collection of motorcycles – including the ‘world’s most travelled motorbike’ – and even a couple of Sinclair C5s (remember them?) That was the last of the museum galleries and a set of stairs lead visitors back down to the ground floor where you exit through the museum

shop. This is well stocked with collectable model cars and other motoring related memorabilia. As far as food and drink goes, Esquires Coffee Shop is located just inside the main door of the museum, where you can get drinks, hot and cold sandwiches and soup. If you want a more substantial meal, there are many cafes, pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance, and 88 CPR Magazine
most do food. Overall I was extremely impressed with the Coventry Transport Museum. I was aware of its existence, but I didn’t know just how good it is, and I am glad I have finally got to see this fascinating collection for myself. With the latest H&H auction taking place at the Race Retro show at Stoneleigh, Coventry, it is perhaps unsurprising that it featured a splendid array of dedicated competition machinery. However, the auction’s undisputed star was neither a forest flyer nor a one-trick track car, but a road-going veteran of road rallies, classic races and hillclimbs from Italy to the Isle of Man – a 1950 E-Series Healey Silverstone. In the same ownership for the last 26 years, the blue, ‘matching numbers’ Healey has never required a comprehensive restoration and, though no concours contender, is a pleasingly patinated all-rounder which is potentially capable of gaining its new owner entry to such prestigious events as the Goodwood Revival and Mille Miglia Storica. The venerable Silverstone comfortably exceeded its top estimate to sell for £121,000. Good classic Jaguars are excellent currency these days and all the road-going examples in this sale fared well. The cream of the cat crop was a delightful 1967 E-Type 4.2 Roadster finished in British Racing Green - one of only circa 863 RHD Series I examples made. A ‘matching numbers’ car, it 90 CPR Magazine
WWW.CPRMAG.COM had travelled just 3,840 miles in the last 25 years and was knocked down for £89,100. The ‘fast road’ Opalescent Blue 1966 E-Type 4.2 Coupe, complete with arch-filling peg-drive alloy wheels, could win a beauty contest any day and doubtless humble most modern performance cars into the bargain – immense fun per pound at £68,200. Perhaps of still more appeal to the purists, was the very well presented LHD red 1963 E-Type 3.8 Roadster that fetched £61,600. Looking every inch a Le Mans veteran, the 1977 LR (RAM) D-Type Evocation changed hands for £30,800, while the very pretty Green 1962 3.4-litre-engined MKII made £25,300. Even if you could afford an original Aston Martin DBR2 or DB3S, finding one to buy would be a major problem. Small wonder then that the splendid 1968/2006 ARA DBR2 and 1969/2006 W.A.M DB3S Evocations both sold for good money - £38,500 and £35,200 respectively. One of several competition cars to attract both admiring glances and a bevy of bids was the Green and White 1957 Austin Healey 100-Six/3000. For those more adept with spanners than racing gloves there were some alluring restoration projects on offer, including: an ultra rare 1954/1955 Jensen 541 Drophead Coupe (£19,250); one of no more than five production Britannia GTs ever made (£9,020), and a former BMC press Austin Healey 3000 MKIII (£7,700) from 1964. Although, unsold under the hammer the exPentti Airikkala 1979 Vauxhall Chevette HSR Works Rally Car and ex-Tony Brise 1971 Elden Mk8 single-seater have since changed hands for £66,000 and £12,000 respectively. Finally, not the most prestigious lot, but one that certainly made everybody smile was the Reliant Regal van which was apparently one of the vehicles used in the UK comedy series ‘Only fools and horses.’ This was reportedly one of three such cars used during the filming and if its provenance is correct, its new owner got an absolute bargain for only £3,190. One of the two other cars used to make the series was bought a few years ago by retired British boxer Ricky Hatton for £44,000. Okay, so it was a non-runner and had a flat tyre, but something so trivial certainly wouldn’t have deterred ‘Del-Boy’… would it? April 2011 91

...And The One That Got Away! $140,000 Not Enough To Secure ‘Beatnik’ Bubbletop
One of the cars in the Amelia Island sale was the amazing ‘Beatnik’ bubbletop, and while it didn’t attract a bid high enough to part it from its current owner, it did look absolutely stunning! We were so taken with it that we thought it warranted a closer look. Bubbletops are a fascinating part of the American custom-car world. Pioneered by such restyling maestros as Ed ‘Big Daddy’ Roth and Darryl Starbird, Bubbletop cars wonderfully combine fascination of 1950s Americana with rockets, space travel and above all the promise of the future, both real and imagined. The builder of this super cool car, Gary ‘Chopit’ Fioto, admits that as a kid growing up on Long Island, New York, he was fascinated with Bubbletops, particularly those of Darryl Starbird. Fioto’s nickname, ‘Chopit,’ artfully describes his

fundamental customizing philosophy. After he impressed customcar traditionalists with his new interpretation on an old theme, a chopped ’50 Merc transformed into the sleek hardtop called ‘Tuf Enuff,’ Gary Fioto performed his unique take on the Bubbletop genre. As is his style, he did it like no other: Fioto’s resulting effort, dubbed ‘Beatnik’ after his car club, the famed ‘Beatniks,’ is a lavender 1955 Ford-
based custom he’s skillfully reworked into a Bubbletop. However, instead of lowering the roof of his donor ’55 Ford, he raised it, handcrafting the largest-ever Bubbletop custom. In 2006, ‘Beatnik’ won the coveted $20,000 Grand Prize at Darryl Starbird’s National Rod and Custom Car Show, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The win was a poetic one for Fioto, who read Starbird’s magazine feature articles as a youngster and chopped
WWW.CPRMAG.COM his first top at age 11. ‘Chopit’ used aluminium detailing and a great deal of steel in the car’s build. He’s immensely skilled in every car construction medium; he uses no written plans, and he thinks in three dimensions. “I don’t always know what I’ll do when I start,” Fioto says, “but I can see the result as I’m working.” He’s an expert at taking seemingly disparate automotive elements and blending them to a state of perfection. This one-of-a-kind, award-winning effort is simply stunning with its scooped, full teardrop skirts front and rear, pancaked bonnet, rolled and pleated pearl white Naugahyde interior and razor-like tailfins. The radical interior, complete with its aircraft control yoke-inspired steering wheel and bulbous dash pod, ‘Beatnik’ is a wheeled tribute to the late 1950s and early 1960s – and it’s truly the work of an artist in metal. ‘Beatnik’ was an extensive, fouryear project and ‘Chopit’ started by completely removing the roof from a ’55 Ford. There’s not much left of the original Ford now. The car rides on a modified ’88 Lincoln Town Car chassis. Fioto likes to replace ‘ancient’ running gear with newer components, reasoning that if there’s a mechanical problem, it’s easier to find late-model, rather than vintage, parts. For ‘Beatnik,’ Fioto used an eclectic mix of Cadillac, Chrysler and Lincoln components, including the canted quad headlights. The front bumper was adapted from a ’59 Cadillac, while the rear bumper was fashioned
from the front bumper of a ’58 Cadillac. The finned taillights are 1960 Chrysler. The front and rear wings, the door skins and the entire rear section of the car are all steel, hand-formed and oxy-acetylene welded.

The engine, with its period-style six-carb induction system jutting through a large hood opening, is a highly detailed Chevrolet 350-cubic inch small-block V-8 with stainlesssteel braided hoses and polished goodies, plus a serpentine belt system, Hedman Hedders and finned Moon valve covers. And yes, there’s air conditioning for those warm, sunny days under the big, tinted Lexan bubble, which was formed to a
pattern and mould created by Fioto himself. The ‘Beatnik’ retains very few elements of the original ’55 Ford; if you look closely, you’ll note the cowl is still there, as are the insides of the doors and their hinges, the hood and its hinges, the boot lock, and a few of the original boot elements. The rest is hand-formed and custom-built. ‘Beatnik’ has received a slew of top awards wherever it has appeared. It won ‘Blackie’ Gejeian’s 2005 Fresno Autorama Sweepstakes Award and made the Top 5 Customs list at Paso Robles in 2005. It was the ‘Outstanding Custom’ at the 2006 Grand National Roadster Show and won the George Barris Kustom d’Elegance Award. All these accolades are in addition to the $20,000 top prize at the Darryl Starbird Show and First Place in the ‘Fine Nine’ competition. ‘Beatnik’ took the ‘Roth Rageous’ trophy and was the First Place winner in the Hand-built Custom category at the Detroit Autorama. Fioto’s ‘Bubbletop’ was also awarded the American Cup, the top award at Carl Casper’s 2006 Custom Car Show in Louisville, Kentucky. ‘Beatnik’ is a truly unique custom and an inspired design statement. Admired today, like its talented builder, this extraordinary car will be even more highly respected in the future. It remains a fitting tribute to a creative era where a few imaginative builders tried to envision the future and succeeded in their own unique way.

Triumph TR4A. U.K. Car with Overdrive in Royal Blue with Blue Interior and Painted Wire Wheels. The paint has extensive micro blistering but the body including the floors and sills is generally sound. The interior is faded, the hood is not torn and still fits well but is also faded. The dashboard has suffered from delamination. Te chassis is in very good condition with the exception of one small repair needed on the left hand T-Shirt panel, this has not effected the outrigger which is sound.
