Spotlight on the National Motor Museum

Editorial You might have noticed that we have a bit of a soft spot for historic racing here at Classic, Performance & Retro magazine, so to say that last month was an exciting one for us is a major understatement! Three events really stood out, and you can read about each one of them in detail right here in this very issue. First, the mighty Silverstone Classic. This event just seems to get better and better with each passing year. Over 1,000 racing cars taking part in 24 highly charged races makes for a truly astonishing spectacle. This year, the drivers not only had to contend with stifling 32 degree heat, but also torrential rain and a thunder storm, which made the Jim Clark Trophy race on Saturday evening look more like a power-boat race! Then there was the Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event that brings together some of the most famous cars and drivers in the world. It was another stunning show, marred only by the crash of the ex-Ayrton Senna Lotus 98T. Thankfully driver Gary Ward escaped with nothing more serious than dented pride, but the car looked to have taken a fairly heavy front-end impact. Unfortunately, that is often the price we pay if we want to see these cars where they belong - out on the track. Yes, we could keep these priceless machines in museums where they never turn a wheel again, but who wants that? Lastly, the Aston Martin Centenary event at Brands Hatch in Kent also provided some amazing racing, featuring both vintage and modern cars, driven by amateur and professional racing drivers alike. The racing was as hot as the weather, and seeing the really early Astons racing wheel-to-wheel was an unforgettable sight! It’s a shame that we wont see this event take place every year, as centenaries only happen every hundred years, but thankfully the Aston Martin Owners’ Club still holds regular race events around the UK on a regular basis. Make sure you check one out soon. Well, as always we hope you enjoy reading this latest issue of Classic, Performance & Retro. We make no apologies for featuring lots of events again as we have to make the most of the summer weather and get out of the office. We’ll get back to the car reviews and road tests when the Autumn weather arrives! Drive safe!

Bargain Sale

Prototype Jaguar XJ220 Snapped Up For Just £72,800 At Auction One lucky collector got an amazing bargain at the H&H Auctions’ Buxton sale on July 24, when a prototype Jaguar XJ220 that had been estimated to make £150180,000 sold for just £72,800 in a ‘no reserve’ sale. The car came with an interesting history as it was used as a development car, specifically to test brakes and tyres. The car - referred to as Prototype 002 by Jaguar - is also shorter and lighter than the production models and was cited in various Jaguar press releases as being responsible for two XJ220 developmental milestones: `in September 1990 Prototype 002 achieved 186mph at the Bruntingthorpe circuit. The following month the car successfully completed 24 hour durability tests at the Millbrook proving ground’. Handwritten notes on file from Kelvin Nevitt (a long serving Jaguar manager) reveal that 002 played an important role in high-speed endurance, transmission durability, ride / handling and Bridgestone tyre testing. It was also present at the Nurburgring in September 1991 when its sister car - Prototype 005 - set a new production car lap record of 7 minutes 46 seconds (which stood until 2000). 002 was Among the cars personally inspected by HRH Princess Diana during the official opening of Jaguar Sport’s Bloxham facility a month later, 002 was mothballed thereafter. The car was eventually sold on, but later became the subject of a legal battle to determine its ownership. More recently, it was recommissioned by marque specialists JD Classics, who carried out work to its engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and electrics. The overhaul took 791 man hours and £69,690.05 to complete. www.classic-auctions.com

Porsche Sale

200 Porsche Projects Offered For Sale Porsche fans might want to keep an eye on the Anglia Car Auctions website in the coming months. The Kings Lynn based outfit will be selling off an assortment of over 200 Porsches which have come from a collector in the USA, with the first cars going under the hammer on the August 24, sale. The collection of cars includes 50 early 911s, around 40 356s and 39 912s. Nearly all of the cars are left-hand drive and most require varying amounts of work to make roadworthy. Some of the cars look like they would benefit from fresh paint and trim, while others will need a thorough rebuild. The August sale includes a 1959 Porsche 356B Roadster which is described as a “Barn find in need of straightforward restoration” and comes with a very rare factory hard top. The car is expected to fetch between £59,000-£70,000. Other models from the same collector include two Range Rovers, a 1960 Peugeot 403 and a 1970 Austin J4. www.angliacarauctions.co.uk

Record Repairs

Repaired Bugatti Back In Action At Prescott A veteran Bugatti racer that was seriously damaged in a crash in May was repaired in record time to make its return at the Prescott Hill Climb on August 3-4. The car flipped over during the La Vie en Blue with Edmund Burgess at the wheel, who luckily escaped with just a few bruises. The accident happened after the Bugatti went into the Esses with too much speed, clipping the barrier and flipping his car upside down. Once the dust had settled, work began on returning the car to a driveable condition with specialists Ivan Dutton Bugatti and Gentry Restorations helping with the rebuild and Spencer Longland overseeing the repairs. Speaking about the crash, Burgess said: ““The accident has allowed me to witness at first hand the professionalism and dedication of the many volunteers marshals and I would like to thank all those who give up their time to allow us to enjoy our sport as safely as possible. Ultimately the incident brought home to me the wonderful camaraderie of the old car movement from the many phone calls, texts, emails , letters and cards that I received.” www.vscc.co.uk

Save Birkin’s Bentley

Deadline Looms For Birkin Bentley Export

The clock is ticking as efforts to raise the £5,149,800 needed to keep Sir Henry Birkin’s famous 1929 4½ Litre supercharged ‘Blower’ Bentley in the UK are stepped up. The Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey has deferred the granting of an export licence for the iconic machine until October 31, but has allowed a provision for that period to be extended through to May 31, 2014 if a group or individual expresses serious intent to raise the money. The development comes after a recommendation by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA). Explaining the decision, Mr Vaizey said: “It would be a tremendous loss to the nation if this wonderful car, that so beautifully epitomises the passion and glamour of motor racing in 1930s Britain, were to be exported overseas. I hope that a UK buyer can be found in the time now available so we can keep this magnificent piece of British racing history in the UK.” www.artscouncil.org.uk

5 Bedrooms & A Classic Car!

House With A View & A 1937 Talbot! If you are a classic car fan and just happen to be in the market for a new house, we might have found the perfect property for you. The fivebedroom, ‘art deco’ style property is located in Deal, Kent and is being offered for £765,000. But that’s not all; included in the price is a beautiful 1937 Talbot 105. The house is just yards from the beach and has views out over the English Channel and across Goodwin Sands, while the car appears to be in excellent condition and certainly looks at home parked outside the house. It is valued at somewhere in the region of £40,000, which is something potential house buyers need to keep in mind. Of course, if the property is bought by someone who has no interest in the car, it could end up being offered for sale at a knock-down price, so keep your eyes peeled! www.brightandbright.co.uk

Regularity Run

London to Brighton Veteran Run Adds ‘Regularity Trial’ A regularity trial has been added to this year’s 60-mile London to Brighton Veteran Car Run which sets off from Hyde Park in London on November 3, and finishes on Brighton’s Madeira Drive later the same day. Entrants in the run can nominate a particular time to aim for; for example, a time of three hours would return an average speed of 20mph, and there is a choice of hourly targets up to a maximum of six hours which gives an average speed of just 10mph. Ben Cussons, Chairman of the VCR Steering Group and Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “The Steering Group is committed to evolving the event and adding value and involvement for the participants. We are restricting the Trial to 150 entries for the first year as it is a new initiative.” The 2013 Veteran Car Run will attract as many as 500 automobiles from the dawn of motoring. As the longest running motoring event in the world and an estimated 500,000 spectators are set to turn out to enjoy the spectacle. And, in line with tradition, the event takes place as close as possible to the date of the original 1896 run. The special weekend also features the Regent Street Motor Show on Saturday November 2, which now hosts the world’s premier Concours d’Elegance for veteran cars. www.veterancarrun.com

Shark On Display

Unique Shark Car Goes On Display At AACA Museum A unique 1962 El Tiburon ‘Shark’ owned by Geoffrey Hacker has just gone on show in Pennsylvania. Hacker, who is well known for tracking down and restoring rare and unusual classic cars, has owned the car for over 30 years, first seeing it when he was just 18 years old, and eventually persuading the owner to sell it to him two years later for $350. He completely rebuilt the car in the early 1980s, and swapped the original Renault 4CV engine and gearbox for units taken from a 1971 Renault R10. To finish off the project, Hacker gave the car its ‘shark-inspired’ paintwork which made the car stand out from the crowd. The Shark, which was also one of the restorer’s first glass-fibre cars, is set to go on display as part of the Pop Culture and Cars Exhibit at the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Museum, in Hershey, PA. Among other cars going on display in the new exhibition are two ‘Superfly cars’ courtesy of coach builder Les Dunham. The Cadillac El Dorado Superfly car was used in Fort Apache - The Bronx and the Corvorado (Corvette made to look like an El Dorado) was featured in both Live and Let Die and Superman The Movie. Another icon of the silver screen is the 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans-AM (Bandit Car) from the movie Smokey and the Bandit, starring Burt Reynolds. www.aacamuseum.org

Date For Your Diary

Dates Confirmed For 2014 Donington Festival The dates of the fourth Donington Historic Festival have been confirmed as Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 3rd, 4th and 5th 2014. Tickets will go on sale in November this year, giving UK and international enthusiasts plenty of time to plan their visit to what is now a firm favourite on the worldwide historic motorsport calendar. Festival organiser Duncan Wiltshire said, “2013 was our first ever three-day Festival, and it was a great success. Consequently we are delighted to be keeping to three days again for 2014 and, in response to popular demand, this will be Saturday, Sunday and Monday. This will allow the drivers and fans to enjoy superb historic racing – and all our off-track attractions such as the rally car demonstrations – for the entire Bank Holiday weekend, which we hope will make the event even more accessible for spectators new to the sport, as well as satisfying the most dedicated historic car enthusiasts.” The 2014 Donington Historic Festival is guaranteed to deliver a thrilling array of huge, international grids of the very best historic single-seaters, sportscars and Touring Cars, driven by top drivers, providing the mix of exhilarating racing, remarkable and priceless cars and the famous Donington Historic open-access paddock that always proves so entertaining. Car clubs will, of course, remain integral to the event, with clubs large and small invited to form the displays which traditionally draw huge crowds of interested enthusiasts, who love the opportunity to wander around the ‘living motoring museum’ that assembles on the infield, and to see the car club parades. Other attractions will include historic rally car action, fast demonstration laps from special race cars, the popular trade village and the Donington Grand Prix Collection museum. Ticket prices for the 2014 Donington Historic Festival will be announced later this year. www.doningtonhistoric.com

Welsh Valley Stages

Neath Valley Set For WWRS RAC Rally Championship Round 4 The classic Wales Rally GB stages of South Wales will be the setting for the Neath Valley Stages, round four of the West Wales Rally Spares RAC Rally Championship (Saturday August 10). With 14 models of car from 11 manufacturers and a vast array of quality drivers, including five-time British Rally Champion Jimmy McRae, it is another superb entry for the championship. The historic cars will run first on the road, competing over prime gravel stages in the Rheola and Margam forest complexes. The very compact route, based at Rheola, covers 45 stages miles and just over 60 road miles and the forest tracks are reported as being in prime condition. The Roger Albert Clark Rally Motor Club has developed the RAC Championship, which focuses on historic rally cars complying with MSA and FIA historic regulations. But, significantly, it also opens up the chance for the next generation of cars to join the historic fraternity. The 2013 championship is running over six one-day gravel rallies in England, Scotland and Wales. The championship caters for cars from MSA historic Categories One, Two and Three as well as cars prepared to FIA Appendix K. Additional classes accommodate cars built up to the end of 1986 as well as other pre ’87 cars that do not fully comply with historic regulations. www.threecountiescarclub.co.uk

NSX Breaks Cover

Honda NSX Prototype Excites Race Fans at Mid-Ohio Demo Lap The Honda NSX prototype lapped the 2.4-mile MidOhio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, just prior to the running of the Honda Indy 200 on August 4, showcasing the steady progress being made toward the planned 2015 launch of Honda’s nextgeneration, mid-engine supercar. Ted Klaus, Chief engineer of Honda R&D Americas, Inc. said: “With leadership from our R&D and manufacturing teams here in Ohio, we are developing a next generation sports car that will be equally at home on the street and on the race track, so it is natural for us to showcase the prototype vehicle here at Mid-Ohio. It is exciting for us to see the prototype running on track, reflecting the great progress we’re making toward the 2015 global launch of the NSX, as we engineer a new sports-car experience for customers around the world.” Targeting next-generation supercar dynamic capabilities with advanced environmental performance, the NSX will be powered by a mid-mounted, direct-injected V-6 engine mated to Honda’s Sport Hybrid SHAWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system. Sport Hybrid SH-AWD is an all-new, three-motor highperformance hybrid system that combines torque vectoring all-wheel drive with advanced hybrid efficiency through the use of three electric motors - one motor integrated with the V6 engine and its all-new dualclutch transmission (DCT) driving the rear wheels, and two motors driving the front wheels. The system enables instant delivery of negative or positive torque to the front wheels during cornering to achieve a new level of driving performance unparalleled by current AWD systems. The next-generation sports car will be produced in nearby Marysville, Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts, at the newly established, state-of-the-art Performance Manufacturing Centre, now under construction. www.honda.co.uk

Croft Classic

Croft Nostalgia Weekend Is Big Hit With Drivers The third running of the Croft Nostalgia Weekend (3/4 August) has been judged a big success as the Historic Sports Car Club ran the 16-race programme at the North Yorkshire track. Close racing, good grids and a wonderful retro atmosphere made the event a big hit, both with the drivers and the thousands of local fans who came along to enjoy the weekend. “The stand-out meeting of the year so far for me,” said historic racing ace Simon Hadfield, who took his Lotus 47 to victory from a capacity grid for the Guards Trophy race. Driving the rare Lotus for the first time for several years, Hadfield marked 30 years of racing with the HSCC by seeing off the Chevron B8 of Charles Allison and the Lenham P69 of John Waggitt. In his Lotus Europa, the road-going version of the 47, Oliver Ford moved closer to the 70s Road Sports Championship title with two narrow wins over the TVR 3000M of Julian Barter. Meanwhile, Peter Shaw maintained the Lotus successes by taking his Elan to a brace of wins in the Historic Road Sports races. Another champion-elect is young Sam Mitchell in Historic FF1600 and he swept to two commanding wins in his Merlyn Mk20. In the Historic FF2000 pack, reigning champion Nelson Rowe (Reynard SF79) took two more wins, but was run close by Andrew Park (Reynard SF81) and Callum Grant (Delta T78). Another double-winner was Jonathan Hughes (Brabham BT6) in the Formula Junior races, but Jack Woodhouse (Lotus 20/22) pushed him very close in the opening race. Among the on-track stars was Yorkshireman Dean Forward with his Tecno, which proved the class of the Historic Formula 3 field. In the opening race he went from last on the grid to victory and later added another win. Just as in 2012, Forward was in unstoppable form and this year he was racing his Tecno for the first time. Meanwhile, Peter Thompson, Leif Bosson and Jim Timms all scaled the podium during the pair of races. The earlier story of F3 was marked by a race for the 500cc cars, which was won by the Cooper Mk10 of Steve Jones. In two crowd-pleasing Historic Touring Car races, Neil Brown (Lotus Cortina) and Warren Briggs (Ford Mustang) took a win apiece. Brown narrowly beat his good friend Richard Dutton (Ford Mustang) on Saturday and then finished threetenths of a second down on Briggs in Sunday’s race. The HSCC season will continue at the Oulton Park Gold Cup on the August Bank Holiday weekend (25/26 August) www. hscc.org.uk

MG Car Club

MG Car Club Welcomes J.U.L.E. For Club Tour July 27 was a busy day for the MG Car Club! As well as running a club stand at the Silverstone Classic, the club also received a welcome visit from the MGB Jubilee and LE Owners Owners’ Club at its Kimber House headquarters in Abingdon. Members from the J.U.L.E group visited Kimber House for a tour of the building and to see the factory site where there cars rolled off the line some thirty years ago. MG Car Club General Manager Julian White was happy to greet members from J.U.L.E and recalled selling the LE models during his time working at a MG dealership. The stop-off at Kimber house was part of a road run by the group to Nuffield House, where they had been given special permission to display their cars on the front lawn of Lord Nuffield’s home. www.mgcc.co.uk

750 Motor Club

MGCC Revives Abingdon Works Car Show The 750 Motor Club has hailed its annual rally, held at Beaulieu on July 7, a great success. Over 200 Austin cars descended on the Hampshire museum, including an impressive collection of long-distance Sevens, starting with John Coleman’s famous Chummy in which he travelled from Buenos Aires to New York in 1959. There was also some more up-to-date ‘Austin adventurers’, like Guy Butcher and Eunice Kratky’s Chummy, which has very recently returned from their epic journey from New York to Alaska, then all the way through South America to Tierra del Fuego. A total journey of 18,000 miles. The 750 Trials section put on a spectacular display with their three trials cars on the grass banking. Meanwhile in the heat of the midday sun, Mike Griffiths and Penny Chew organised a marathon session of Austin 7 driving tests and the inter-club relay race. Lining the top of the field were the visiting cars from our friends Tacot Club from Calais. There were more Autojumble stalls than ever, record sales of ice creams, and a record attendance (100) at the Saturday evening grand barbecue dinner. www.750mc.co.uk

GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club

GT40 Club Puts On A Show At Goodwood & Silverstone The GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club pulled out all the stops in July to display its cars at both the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Silverstone Classic. It was a big undertaking for a small club (and we mean that in a nice way!) and to say the results were impressive would be an understatement. Club member David Scaife was the man behind the sterling efforts, particularly for the Goodwood event, and the high-quality appearance of the club stand certainly reflected the huge effort involved. Club Chairman Andrew Komosa is also looking for GT40s to take part in the Simply Classics show at Beaulieu on August 25-26. The club has been invited to take part in the event by the show’s organiser, and as Andrew says, “We have an unique opportunity to show our GT40s at a prestigious automobile museum. Beaulieu is one of our premier motor museums...probably one of the finest in the World.” If you have a suitable car, contact the club via its website. www.gt40enthusiastsclub.com

that later. The Silverstone Classic is run a bit like a military exercise, in so much as the organisers have found out what works, and have more or less stuck to that format rigidly. It was therefore surprising to discover

that a couple of key changes had been made to this year’s show, one of them good, and one maybe no so good. The best addition was that for the first time, visitors could now walk along the roadway between the trade village and the new Silverstone Wing complex. Okay, it is a long walk, and getting a bus is undoubtedly

quicker, but at least now you have the option, and it gives some great views of the track at Aintree, The Loop, Maggotts and Becketts. The one surprise omission from the Classic this year was the popular Celebrity Challenge race. Now at first I thought a race like that would be rather cheesy, but it kind of grew on me, especially last year when

some serious ‘petrolheads’ like Brian Johnston and Jay Kay got involved, and gave us some pretty competitive racing. It also brought a touch of showbiz to the paddock, and even if some of the celebs were not exactly ‘A-listers,’ it was still fun seeing how many you could recognise. Nobody I spoke to seemed to know why the celebrity race got binned, August 2013 19

the mouth-watering prospect of an incredible 24 full races. It would be impossible to give detailed reports on each race, we simply don’t have enough space, so I’ll just pick out some of the highlights. One of those was the Stirling Moss Trophy. Racing in front of HRH The Duke of Kent, triple Formula 1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart, Murray Walker and numerous Lotus dignitaries (present to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark’s first world title in 1963), Oliver Bryant driving the Lotus 15 won the thrilling Stirling Moss Trophy pre-1961 sports cars race. Walker. Graeme Dodd (Cooper Monaco) led the chase initially, hounded by the closelymatched triumvirate of Jason Minshaw (Maserati Tipo 61 ‘Birdcage’) – who went past when Dodd thought he’d lost a tooth in his ERSA gearbox – Shaun Lynn (ex-John Bekaert

Lister-Jaguar) and Anthony Reid in Nigel Webb’s gloriously befinned Jaguar D-type, soon to pull up. There had already been drama as the top-quality 37-car field descended upon Brooklands corner on the opening lap. The shapely aluminium tail of David Cottingham’s Ferrari 500 TRC was savaged here by the Elva Mk5 of Germany’s Ralf Emmerling. The latter – curiously presented in the national colours of Latvia, its wounds bandaged with tank tape. Dodd had been content to stay close to Minshaw, knowing that he could relay son James in 15 seconds, while soloist Jason would have to stop for 30 – but before he could do so second gear stripped and he drove the Cooper forlornly into retirement. Scot Andrew Smith (JD Classics Lister-Jaguar Costin) briefly went ahead of Lynn before putting Chris Ward in to bat, in what was to be the drive of the race. The Silverstone Driving Experience chief danced the big car into corners and retrieved its pendulous tail from remarkable angles on the exits of the slower turns. Apparently unfazed by steam billowing from a breather, Ward had hacked Bryant’s advantage back from 30 seconds to 7.2 by the time his rival had regained the lead, Minshaw and Pearson (who installed Carlos Monteverde) having pitted late. Encouraged by his pit signals, Ward had sight of his prey with five laps remaining. Teammate John Young obligingly

drove his Austin-Healey 100S over the greensward at Becketts to avoid impeding him, but even when the D-type of Jaguar founder William Lyons’ grandson Mike

Quinn inadvertently held Bryant up, time was ticking away too quickly for an upset. As the chequered flag greeted Bryant, class winner Ward was two seconds adrift, rueing

Pre-event favourites, the Pearson brothers, duly won it in their Jaguar D-type, but the local lads had to toil for glory come Sunday morning. Gary Pearson was already a few lengths clear as the peloton – compressed by the tricky infield section between Village and Aintree corners – blasted onto the Wellington Straight for the first time, whereupon pursuer Owen’s Kurtis gyrated like a top across the track, delaying everybody else. “Geraint was sideways in my mirrors as I changed up, and when I looked again he was still spinning,” chuckled Gary afterwards. Once the dust had settled, Smith led the chase, with

American Fred Wakeman gunning his sleeker CooperJaguar into third, ahead of Young in the bronze C-type, Bourne’s Lotus and Patrick Watts’ Allard J2. Monteverde recovered from an early spin, but stopped a lap too early for Pearson, thus the Brazilian had to go round again while the leader came in at 10½ laps – the timing line being after Club, while teams worked out of the traditional pits. John Pearson resumed third, behind Smith and Wakeman, and regained the lead from Young (now in the silver Cooper-Jag) on lap 20. But Ward was bearing down on them both in the C-type and a lap later passed his teammate into Stowe. Chris then threw caution to the wind as he homed in on Pearson in a succession of opposite lock flurries. John’s focus remained steadfast, though, and despite the growing threat he crossed

Young thus finished second (with Ward) and third, ahead of spinner Patrick BlakeneyEdwards (in for Wakeman), while Gary Pearson and Simon Hadfield hauled their partners’ cars brilliantly back to fifth and sixth, the latter having made up a lot of time. YBest of the Healeys was the Martyn Corfield/Jeremy Welch 100/4 in 17th place, although Welch (in the car shared with

Rob Huff gave a spirited drive in the Trans-Atlantic Touring Cars race. Swede Nils-Fredrik Nyblaeus) had previously enjoyed a terrific 100M tussle with Mike Thorne’s closed version and the hairy Harvey Woods. Alas, David Wenman’s Jaguar C-type took a wallop from Nick Ruddell’s Aston Martin DB2 when a suspected mechanical problem threw the Jag into a spin at Becketts on the opening lap. The Kurtis didn’t last much longer, another lairy rotation (out of Luffield this time) persuading Owen to throw in the towel.

Spirited Drive Another highlight on the Saturday afternoon was the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy race that saw Mini Coopers racing against the much larger Ford Mustangs and Galaxies. It provided some of the most exciting racing of the whole weekend, not least because current World Touring Car Champion Rob Huff was at the controls of the No47 Mini. He took on the larger cars August 2013 27

like a man possessed and his car quickly picked up a hefty knock that rearranged his front bumper, giving the car a curiously un-Mini like smile. Undeterred, his fought his way up the field until he eventually led his class and stayed there until the chequered flag. Speaking after the race, Rob said: “I loved every minute! It’s a great little car and it’s really well balanced. I was managing to gain places on the corners when I could out-brake the larger American 28 www.cprmag.co.uk

cars, but couldn’t match their straight-line speed. It was loads of fun though - a great experience!”

Thunder & lightning! One race that didn’t go quite to plan was the Jim Clark Trophy for Pre-66 Grand Prix Cars. The race started just as black storm clouds pushed towards Silverstone from the east. Sure enough, as the veteran racers hammered around the track, there was a clap of

thunder, a flash of lightning, and then the skies opened. Within minutes, the track was awash with water and the focus switched from racing to just getting the cars back to the pit lane without any of them spinning off the track. With conditions so bad, the decision was quickly taken to ‘red flag’ the race. You simply had to feel sorry for the soggy drivers coming back into the pit lane - wet doesn’t even begin to cover it. The rain continued for some

time before it stopped long enough to get the GT cars out on track. It was a spectacular sight as the swarm of cars lunged down the start/finish straight, headlights blazing, in a huge cloud of spray. Sadly, it would be the last race of the day as the conditions were considered to treacherous for the Group C cars to race in. The following day saw a big improvement in the weather which allowed the racing to

continue uninterrupted, and the Group C cars to do their stuff. In fact, all the races on the Sunday went ahead as planned, and by the time the F2 cars lined up for the final race of the weekend, many of the spectators were already heading home. It hardly needs saying, but once again the Silverstone Classic was a massive success. It is in a different league to most other automotive events. Where as the Goodwood

Festival of Speed is more relaxed with the emphasis on having fun, the Silverstone Classic really delivers as a serious historic motorsport event where no quarter is given or expected. If proof was needed, you only had to look at the bent metal in Park Ferme after each race. The racing was great, the music was good, the weather was mostly okay...and the cars were just sensational. If it ain’t broke...don’t fix it. More of the same next year please! August 2013 29

100 Years Of Aston Martin To mark the 100th anniversary of Aston Martin, a huge centenary celebration was held at Brands Hatch on July 6-7. The result was a staggering display of cars and racing. Phil Sullivan joined the celebrations. Photos: Chris McEvoy.

a few hundred cars and a few thousand gallons of high octane fuel. And that’s exactly what we got. Held at Brands Hatch race circuit in Kent on July 6-7, this event was a cross between a car show and a race meeting, with some live demonstrations thrown in for good measure. A full weekend of racing was

planned which would feature not just Aston Martins, but lots of other prestigious classic and sports cars too.

Timeline Of course, not everyone who is into Aston Martins is into racing, but there was still enough on offer to keep even the most

Race & Track While it’s fair to say that Bond has done a lot for the company’s image, you would have to say that Aston Martin’s sporting success has played a big role too. While the manufacturer has only won the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans just once back in 1959, the company’s cars have played a major role in GT and endurance cars racing with numerous outright victories and class wins at major events. Since the centenary meeting 34 www.cprmag.co.uk

was being held at a race track, it would be silly not to show off at least a few of these sporting legends, and thankfully, that is exactly what we got. Among these cars was the awesome Aston Martin Nimrod, a car from the Group C heyday. The Aston Martin-engined, Lola-bodied Nimrod had the unenviable task of competing against the Rothmans Porsche 956 in the early 1980s, but still performed admirably. Also from the Group C era, the AMR1 lined up next to the

nimrod. This car competed in the 1989 World Sports Prototype Championship and 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans with David Leslie behind the wheel alongside numerous teammates. The car was the product of Aston Martin’s link-up with Ecurie Ecosse, the long-running Scottish race team. It looked and sounded amazing as it pounded around the Brands Hatch tarmac. Bringing things right up to date and dressed in iconic Gulf livery, the Aston Martin GTE began the 2013 season in dominant fashion, with Bruno Senna, Darren Turner and Stefan Mucke driving the #97 car to third place in the GTE Pro class at Le Mans

Then there was the DB7GT prototype which was developed for use in a single-make racing series in 1995. Only two cars were made, and the one at the show is the only one still in existence. Banburybased company Prodrive was enlisted to build the car alongside Aston Martin Lagonda, and Le Mans winner Andy Wallace was the test driver. Sir Stirling Moss demonstrated the car at Goodwood too before the project was eventually shelved.

Before long Brooke had definitely asserted his authority and disappeared into the distance, as a five car train battled for second place. As Fowler defended his second place, James Walpole’s MGB was soon forced to defend his third place, as the hard charging Peter Bramble in an MG ZR 160 launched an attack from fourth. As Brooke developed a gap of 7.4 seconds, his lead quickly evaporated when he suffered a bouncy moment across the grass on the penultimate lap. Glorious Goodwood With current Formula1 cars and high tech Le Mans machines combined with several land speed record setting cars, you could say that the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the fastest show on Earth! David Harrison reports. Photos: Chris McEvoy.

I

remember some years ago speaking to a friend about the possibility of going down to the Goodwood Festival of Speed; it sounded like a great event and there was more than enough there to make it worth the journey south. I didn’t get quite the reaction I was expecting. “Don’t you mean the Festival of greed?” he replied with more than a hint of sarcasm. You see, it turned out that he had been before, and being of a rather thrifty nature, he 46 www.cprmag.co.uk

found some of the prices being charged a little on the high side. He might have a point, but the thing is, quite often it’s a case of you get what you pay for, and that is certainly the case with the Festival of Speed. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that show organisers are doing what they do to make money, since this is after all a ‘hobby industry.’

One Of A Kind With the possible exception of the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power, nothing else in the UK comes close to the Festival of Speed. Want to see current F1 drivers hurling team cars round the course? How about seeing some of this year’s Le Mans 24 Hour Race machines up close? Or maybe you get a kick out of watching some incredibly rare and valuable historic cars thundering around the track, bringing back the sights and sounds from the golden years of motorsport. If any of that appeals, you’ll be delighted to hear that it’s all part of the Festival of Speed. While Goodwood’s location makes it a particularly attractive setting for an event such as this, the surrounding country lanes are less than ideal for handling the vast amount of traffic generated by the festival. The trick is to get there early and beat the queues. Ideally, get a hotel room and travel down the night before so you can get an early start, but be warned. Nearly all the local hotels have cottoned on to the high demand for rooms while the festival is on and many inflate their prices by more than double their normal rate. Yep, there is making a living, and then there’s making a killing.

Automotive Art Once I was eventually through the gates, the first thing to catch my eye was the huge towering sculpture in front of Goodwood August 2013 47

Sir Henry Segrave’s 1,000hp Sunbeam.

Lots of parts on offer!

Record Breakers As usual, no effort had been spared on any of the numerous static displays scattered around the grounds. One particular favourite of mine was the display showcasing some of the famous Land Speed Record

cars, nearly all of which had adorned my bedroom wall in my younger years. Most of these epic machines were positioned on mocked-up sandy beaches, some of which even had extra additions like palm trees and sunbathing girls! Among the machines on show were Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird V which broke the Land Speed Record in 1935 and Sir Henry Segrave’s

Breaking History Out on the track, some famous names from motorsport past and present thundered around

the circuit, holding little in reserve. Unfortunately, it didn’t always go quite to plan. It’s fair to say that historic Formula1 cars don’t get much more famous than the ex-Ayrton Senna Lotus 98T, resplendent in black and gold JPS colours, and driven at Goodwood by Gary Ward. Regrettably, the driver lost control of the iconic car as it came out of Molcomb August 2013 49

The same corner later claimed another victim when the #17 Porsche 962C (Chassis 006) raced to victory by Derek Bell, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Al Holbert in the 1987 24 Hours of Le Mans ran off the track. Cool Stuff To Spend Your Money On! Power Wheel Nut Wrench Available from: Laser Tools Prices From: £116 + VAT See: www.lasertools.co.uk It’s a problem that I’m sure we have all faced at one time or another; you’re stuck on the side of the road with a puncture and the gorilla who fitted your last set of tyres seems to have welded the wheel nuts on. The spanner supplied with the car is next to useless, and no matter how hard you try, the nut wont shift. Well, one answer to that problem is to keep a Laser Tools’ Power Wheel Nut Wrench in the boot of your car. It uses a clever reflex bar design which uses basic physics to shift even the most stubborn of wheel nuts. When the reflex bar of the wrench is placed against the ground the ratchet handle increases torque applied by a factor of 3.5, and if that doesn’t shift them, then nothing will! The 1/2” drive shank can also be pushed through to enable the wrench to be used as an ordinary ratchet handle to initially tighten up wheel nuts or bolts before final tightening with a torque wrench. Three commonly used wheel nut deep sockets are also included, which are: 17mm, 19mm and 21mm. The kit is supplied in a sturdy blow-mould case and is priced at £116.00 (+ VAT). It’s perhaps not the cheapest solution (a scaffolding bar and a sturdy spanner spring to mind!) but if you are looking for a tidy but effective solution that you can carry around with you or use in the workshop, then this ticks all the boxes. Momo Rookie Race Suits Available from: BG Direct Price: £299.99 inc VAT See: www.b-gdirect.com Thanks to our frequent coverage of historic motorsport, we seem to have quite a decent number of aspiring racing drivers among our readership. Now if you want to take up racing, there are certain essential pieces of equipment that every driver must have, and one of the first things you will need before you venture out on the race track is a good quality FIA approved race suit. With the novice driver firmly in mind, Italian company Momo has produced an attractive range of racing suits designed to meet all the current standards. The new ‘Rookie Race Suit’ is produced from two-layer, high quality, 100% Nomex III material resulting in a lightweight suit that offers good breathability, and comes with a Hans consistent epaulet. The Rookie is approved to FIA standard 8856/2000 and SFI 3.2a/5. It is available in Continental sizes 48 to 64 (Sizes 48, 62 and 64 are to special order only) and is available in a choice of colours: Blue, Ecru, Black and Red. In fact, the look and construction of the suits should have them flying off the shelves since most similar novice-level race suits are all one colour and resemble badly made boiler-suits! Retailing at £299.99 including VAT makes the Mono Rookie Suits competitively priced with similar novice racing suits. 54 www.cprmag.co.uk

TR2-4A Spin-on Filter And Oil Cooler Adapter Available From: Cambridge Motorsport Parts Prices From: £195.00 + VAT See: www.cambridgemotorsport.com Up until now, if you wanted to replace the old canister and element type oil filter on a Triumph TR2 - 4 with a modern spin on type, or add an oil cooler you would need to add a sandwich plate - and if you wanted to do both you would need a degree in plumbing! The net result would probably be a series of oil leaks and a conglomeration of parts taking up lots of room under the bonnet. Cambridge Motorsport Parts say they can now offer a much better solution; a complete spin-on oil filter mount and oil cooler take-off in one clever adaptor. To make things even tidier, the adaptor also accepts the original oil pressure relief valve and is supplied with gasket, bolts and seals, and even a spin on filter is included in the kit.

Want to see your new product mentioned here?

Dino Nero Wallet Available From: Greycar Price: £179.17 + VAT See: www.greycar.com If you are one of those people who likes classy accessories, then you’ll love this. The Dino Nero Wallet from Greycar has been given a real ‘retro’ look which closely mimics the style of seat covers fitted to the Ferrari Dino and many other performance and classic cars in the 1950s and 60s. Handmade using the finest Italian leather, this product oozes quality. The exterior is finished in black, while the inside face of the wallet is lined with tan leather and carries a small metal GTO London badge. This isn’t a cheap wallet for everyday use; it should be used at only the finest establishments and would be most at home on the bar of a casino in Monaco as you order your Martini, shaken...not stirred.

The National Motor Museum

Beaulieu Tucked away down on the south coast of England is one of the real treasures of the automotive world - the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu. Simon Hazeldine dropped in for a closer look.

W

e have been meaning to do a feature on the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu for some time now, and as luck would have it, a recent run of events down on the south coast meant that it would be easy for us to pop in and see what was on offer. Situated on the edge of the New Forest in Hampshire, Beaulieu isn’t exactly what you would call a central location. Some might

56 www.cprmag.co.uk

say it is an odd place to situate a ‘national motor museum’ as it doesn’t get much in the way of passing traffic, and it’s not really the sort of place you can visit in a single day if you are based in the Midlands or the north of the country. It is however an exquisite location and perfect if you fancy a motoring-themed weekend away. If you are visiting the museum by car, you will need to take a

little extra care as you near the village of Beaulieu. Its location on the edge of the New Forest means that the famous New Forest Ponies - the wild horses that populate the area - are often seen roaming on the surrounding roads. In the village itself, swans, ducks, geese and even donkeys wander around without a care in the world. It really is ‘picturepostcard’ pretty, but do try and keep your eyes on the road if

driving! To you, me and lots of other motoring enthusiasts, the name Beaulieu will instantly be associated with cars, but actually there is much more to this place than a feast of automotive gems. The Beaulieu Estate, which hosts the National Motor Museum, is also home to Beaulieu Palace, which for generations has been home to the Montagu family, and also Beaulieu Abbey, an ancient

monastery dating back to the 14th Century. In short, it’s the sort of place you can really spend a full day at and not get bored. Now I won’t dwell on the palace or abbey for too long, as obviously this feature is really about the motor museum, but it would be wrong not to mention them at all. Sections of the palace are open to the public, although as it is still the residence of the Montagu family,

a large part of it isn’t. Some of the rooms have been restored to how they would have looked in the 1800s and there are lots of period antiques on show. The Abbey is partially ruined, but the Refectory still remains and now acts as Beaulieu Parish Church, while the Domus Conversorum (or large hall) has been restored as a museum and function hall, and is indeed a remarkable building.

To get to either the abbey or the palace, visitors have to go through the main motor museum entrance which also acts as the gift shop and ticket office. It is a modern, purpose-built building, and the shop is well stocked with lots of motoring related goodies.

Rockets & Trains! Once outside you are free to wander where ever you like, and while the main museum building was tempting, I couldn’t resist taking a look at the ‘World of Top Gear’ exhibition first, as it was right next to the entrance. As you might expect, this display features some of the weird and wacky cars that have been used to make the popular BBC TV series, including the Amphibious Cars, the Grannymobile, the Reliant Rocket ‘Space Shuttle’ and the TGV12 (Jaguar) Sports Train. There are loads more too, and TV screens mounted near the exhibits play footage from the programme showing how the

cars were used during the filming. Next to the Top Gear exhibition is another small display showing ‘On Screen Cars’ which hosts machines like Mr Bean’s Austin Mini, Del Trotter’s Reliant Regal van from ‘Only Fools and Horses’ and the Ford Anglia from the Harry Potter films.

Ancient & Modern From the film cars exhibition it is just a short walk to the main museum building, also a modern, purpose built structure. The large entrance hall hosts a range of cars designed to give visitors just a taste of what is to come, with machines from the very earliest days of motoring facing much more modern cars like the Cosworth Sierra and Citroen Saxo. From there you enter the cavernous main display hall where most of the museum exhibits are displayed. They seem to be arranged loosely in date order with the earliest

If you follow the walkway around this part of the museum, the cars get progressively newer and the fragile machines from the early 1900s merge into more modern cars like the Ferrari 246GT Dino, the Jaguar E-Type, Triumph TR2

There is a great collection of racing cars lined up on the floor, including Jaques Villeneuve’s 1996 William Renault FW18, Ayrton Senna’s 1988 McLaren Honda MP4/4 and Jim Clark’s 1967 Lotus 49, while high above a selection of Grand Prix cars are frozen in motion on a steel track, slanted precariously at 45 degrees. While on the subject of fast cars, there is also a great display of Land Speed Record setting machines, which include Donald Campbell’s Bluebird which set a new World Land Speed Record of 403.10mph/648.73kph July 17, 1964, and alongside that sits Henry Segrave’s Golden Arrow

There is so much history connected to these two cars that it’s difficult to take it all in. Next to the record-breaking cars is a brilliant mock-up of a vintage garage, complete with authentic petrol pumps and a workshop crammed with all those traditional tools (remember the days before electric screwdrivers?). In fact, there are a number of historical recreations throughout the museum and they definitely help bring the exhibits to life. I particularly liked the vintage street scene with its wooden fronted shops and cobbled road; very atmospheric.

Whether it’s aquatic Lotus Esprits or rocket-firing Aston Martins, they are all here, as too are many of the other gadgets and machines which starred in the films. For example, there is ‘Little Nellie,’ the heavily-armed autogyro from ‘You Only Live Twice’ and the Acrostar ‘mini-jet’ from ‘Octopussy.’ It’s fascinating stuff, and brilliantly displayed too. Back in the main display area, the amazing cars just keep on

coming. There is a 1924 Bugatti Type 35 which was built for the French Grand Prix in Lyon and driven by Ferdinand de Vizcaya, and nearby is a dark green 1930 Bentley 4.1/2 Litre Supercharged, or ‘Blower Bentley’ as it is often called.

Touring The Grounds Perhaps one of the more surprising aspects of the museum is its mono-rail system which carries passengers on an elevated tour of the estate grounds. What’s surprising about

that you might ask. Well, after passing overhead the outside exhibits, the mono-rail makes a turn and heads through a doorway and into the main museum building. It passes right through the main display hall, just inches from the ceiling, and gives visitors a great ‘birds-eye’ view of the exhibits. Outside the main hall, a vintage bus pulls up and takes visitors around the grounds, making stops at Beaulieu Palace and the abbey. It’s not a long walk to be fair, but

The only other main building that I haven’t yet mentioned is the museum’s restaurant which serves a wide range of hot and cold snacks. You always pay a little over the odds at any ‘daytrip destination’ and Beaulieu is no exception, but the food I tried was of good quality and not too badly priced. The restaurant itself is a spacious and well laid out venue, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating.

Beaulieu Palace is open to museum visitors.

Delightful Destination You could probably say the same about any motoring museum, but if you like cars, you’ll just love Beaulieu. The whole place came into being thanks to the current Lord Montagu’s passion for vintage cars, and he certainly has a few. In fact, if you drive around the local roads near Beaulieu on a sunny Sunday afternoon, you will probably see him at the helm of a 100 year old car of some sort. There can’t be many places on earth that have so many famous cars in one place which means that even non-petrolheads will still find it interesting, but in the unlikely event that they don’t, you can always pack them off to look around the palace or the abbey. If you plan to make a weekend of it, then the south coast is just a stones-throw away with

views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight, while the cities of Portsmouth and Southampton are just are only half an hour’s drive and offer numerous attractions. Yep, Beaulieu might be a little off the ‘beaten track,’ but it is certainly worth making the effort to get there, because what awaits you is one of the best automotive collections in the country. Just watch out for that wildlife!

WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME

OUR DOCTRINE REMAINS THE SAME...

• Keep stocks high - you cannot sell a product if you don’t have the stock • Never lie to a customer - if supply is going to be 6 weeks, be honest and tell them so • Try to get every order out the same day • Keep the customer informed • Never take a credit card swipe or raise an invoice unless the goods are to hand • Sell value for money products - not the cheapest nor necessarily the best, but that which our experience suggests is good for the job • Offer advice if you feel capable of doing so but don’t talk rubbish!

Back in the 70’s, a Quick Ratio Escort Rack cost £200 plus. We developed an inexpensive DIY quick conversion kit and sold thousands, but now competively priced as a complete rack.

With the passage of time it’s easy to forget the ideas that Rally Design have developed that has kept the good old RWD Escort parts affordable to all. Some of our present customers were not even born when we first started from our lock-up garage unit!

http://www.rallydesign.co.uk Tel. 01227 792792 www.rallydesign.co.uk

We were the pioneers of bolt-on dedicated 4pot braking kits using the inexpensive Wilwood ally racing callipers, copied now by some of the biggest names in performance braking, but we were the first!

Still the only company to produce polyurethane suspension bushes by the injection moulding process, resulting in a high quality bush together with stainless crush sleeve at a very low price.

Such an inexpensive way to convert any 2” (50mm) old strut into a coil over unit. Simple ideas are sometimes the best. The roller top mount has always been a critical service item. Rally Design invested in press and moulding tools to ensure this vital part continued in production

Until Rally Design invested in new tooling, the industry relied on reconditioned old struts - now many in the shock absorber industry use Rally Design’s stub axles in their performance strut units.

All our coil springs are produced on OEM style N. C. Coilers - Minimum order of 300 coils per size. Our stock investment of over 20,000 springs has transformed the unit cost and quality of this vital suspension part.

Adjustable ‘in-situ’ TCA’s manufactured from new drop forged tooling eliminating all welding for a stronger, smarter and cheaper product. Weld-on double width kit eliminating the problem of TCA ‘pull forward’ or ‘tuck back’ positioned the double width unit exactly to your requirements. Combined with Polyrace bushes to suit varying roll bar dimensions.

Twin cam roll bar similar story to springs. Settled on 2000 pieces to ensure continuity of supply.

Taper leaf springs - we searched Europe and then Asia for a Taper Rolling Mill - Yes Sir! Minimum order quantity 20 tons. How many springs is that? - 20 tons worth Sir!

Roll cage padding - We invested in new tooling to buy direct from a foam converter. Minimum hands in the supply chain results in a BI fire retardant product which is well priced.

Our buyers found a battery produced for medical applications in large numbers which had the right spec and at an amazingly low price. Thousands in use.

Classic Ford Wheels - Purchased from one of the largest OEM wheel manufacturers to JWL standard, the best quality wheels at such a good price. Wheels always available ex-stock.

We searched the world to find the source manufacturer of the genuine Vermiculite manifold wrap. Now badge engineered by others but we are the European source.

AND NOW... Rally Design have invested in 15

new press tools to produce the Escort 1 or 2 balance Bar pedal Box with pressed pedals and design similar to the original Boreham converted box but at a price similar to box section pedals - doing the job right!

The RMD Maximum protection seat, priced at £99.50 plus VAT receives glowing reviews from our customers.

Silicon hoses - Fed up with the terrible delivery of UK hose manufacturers we invested in 500 new mandrel tools to produce this product direct from the moulder - we now have over 20,000 hoses in stock for instant dispatch. No delivery problems ever again.

All automotive auctions have their ‘star’ lot but few will surpass the much anticipated sale of the ex-Juan Manuel Fangio 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 car at Coys’ recent sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Some impressive estimates were quoted ahead of the sale, but when the hammer eventually fell the historic racer became the most expensive car ever sold at auction, fetching an incredible £19,601,500. Some might say that is a crazy amount to pay for a car, but it’s not difficult to see its appeal. For a start it has a remarkable history. On July 4, 1954, at the Reims-Gueux circuit in France, Juan Manuel Fangio drove the W196 home to win the French Grand Prix. It was a success that marked Mercedes-Benz’s post-war Grand Prix come-back for the first time since 1939. The car is Coys’ sales is the only W196 out of factory or institutional captivity; the only survivor not preserved within either Daimler-Benz or an International museum. Yet it is the most successful of all surviving W196s. It is the only surviving Mercedes-Benz W196 to have won not just one World Championship-qualifying Grand Prix race, but two. It is the first open-wheel version of the landmark W196 design ever to have won a race, and it is the actual car in which Fangio clinched the second of his five Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship 72 www.cprmag.co.uk

WWW.CPRMAG.CO.UK titles. It was also sold in remarkably unspoiled, almost ‘barn-find’ condition, with its sophisticated mechanicals believed to be complete and in running order after proper preparation. There were audible gasps as the hammer finally fell and a spontaneous round of applause broke out to make the conclusion of bidding. With such a highlight, the rest of the auction almost seemed irrelevant, yet there was still some amazing cars being offered for sale. Among these was a stunning 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 ‘Le Mans’ Tourer which sold for £1,905,500. Described as a matching numbers car of undoubted integrity, the rare Alfa came with a continuous and well documented history confirming its provenance. It is a car that has been extensively and successfully campaigned, competing four times in the testing Mille Miglia and winning the Best British cup on that event in 1998. It has been rallied in Denmark, driven with spirit at Zandvoort and Angouleme and completed a long distance tour in South Africa. Closer to home it has taken part in countless VSCC and Alfa Romeo Section events in the UK, and is no stranger to ascending Prescott Hill. Second highest bid of the day secured a beautiful ex-Bill Spear/ Sherwood Johnston 1955 Maserati 300S SportsRacing Spider. Selling for £4,033,500, this example was the third sports-racing car of its type to be ordered by the great American entrant Briggs Swift Cunningham for the use of his old friend and team driver Bill Spear. Upon delivery in the USA, Maserati

This beautiful Alfa Romeo 8C went to a new home for £1,905,500.

Tidy replica of the Dukes of Hazzard ‘General Lee’ Dodge Charger - a bargain at just £21,850.

‘3053’ was co-driven by Bill Spear and Sherwood Johnston in the 1955 Sebring 12-Hours race, American road racing’s round of the FIA Sports Car World Championship. The car remains in remarkably original condition which more than justified its impressive sale price. For those who like a touch of irony, how about this. Despite some truly eye-watering sale prices, the one car in this sale that would attract the most attention if you parked it at your local village fete sold for just £21,850. Yep, even Fangio’s car would struggle to

attract young boys away from the replica ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Dodge Charger. The car was a faithful reproduction (apart from the Union Jack on the roof) but featured some notable additions such as a totally rebuilt 440ci engine stroked to 500ci (8.2 litres) producing 460bhp and 550ft/ lbs of torque. All that power is transmitted via a ‘four-on-the-floor’ T4 manual gearbox to proper ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ specification wheels shod with Yokohama 038 road/track tyres. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes it does have ‘that’ horn too! August 2013 73

Epic Road Trips 1965 - 1970 Format: PAL Running Time: 96 minutes Price: £14.99 Available From: www.classiccarproducts.co.uk A driver, a car and an open road are pretty much all you need to make a motoring DVD, but throw in snow, extreme heat, mountains, racing and the odd bit of fishing and you have all the ingredients for an epic road trip. The words ‘road trip’ might conjure up memories of a misspent youth or maybe some of the notorious National Lampoon films, but thankfully the road trip on this DVD isn’t quite so raucous. The footage is taken from BP’s extensive Video Library and the archive film details three very different motoring journeys. There’s adventure, danger, fierce contest and humour set against the most spectacular scenery which gives a breathtaking tour of the world without leaving your armchair! Crossroads Alice recounts the epic 12,000 journey around Australia in which four men, armed with only a Mini and an Austin 1800, embarked on in November 1965. The figure-of-eight route saw the team, which included ‘Gelignite’ Jack Murray, contend with snow, mountains, storms, dust, floods and searing temperatures. As well as discovering how the team and cars cope with the demanding conditions, this is a chance to see the fascinating people, places, landscape, wildlife and history of Australia. Inca Road documents the 1970 running of the incredible Los Caminos del Incas Rally. The 2,700 kilometre route climbs 16,000 feet into the Andes of Peru and pitches the skill and bravery of rally drivers against snow, mud, dust and terrifying ravines. Motoring legend Hannu Mikkola is among those to take the start, but the race is all about local drivers Henry Bradley and Luis Carlessi as the field of Ford Escorts, Mustangs, Volvos, Fiats, Minis and BMWs roar through the

76 www.cprmag.co.uk

iconic mountain range. Finally, The Taking Mood is a light hearted film telling the story of two men as they drive more than 1,500 miles across New Zealand as part of a bet to land three fish and make it home first. It is humorous viewing as the pair are beset by distractions and disasters on their road trip, but it is also a wonderful chance to enjoy the spectacular scenery of this incredible country. If you are looking for pin-sharp footage and state-of-theart production, then this DVD probably wont appeal to you. However, if you like your classic cars served up with a slice of fun mixed in with a large wedge of nostalgia, then this should tick all the boxes!

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads! Bentley Four-cylinder Models in Detail: 1921-1930 Author: James Taylor Price: £37.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 1 906133 306 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk For more than 80 years these legendary Bentleys, the creation of the celebrated W O Bentley, and not to be confused with the Bentleys produced by Rolls-Royce since its acquisition of the remains of Bentley Motors in 1931, have remained the object of fascination and desire of all motoring enthusiasts. WO launched his first model, the 3-litre, in 1921, as a sporting car for the discerning driver, intending that it should provide 80mph performance, with exceptional reliability based on the quality of its engineering and construction. It became the favourite of wealthy young sportsmen and, to prove a point, 3-Litre cars won at Le Mans in 1924 and 1927. While still in production it was joined in 1927 by the 90mph 4½-litre, still a four-cylinder, which won at Le Mans in 1928. The best-known Bentley, the supercharged 4½, was offered in 1929 and was a genuine 110mph car at a time when most cars struggled to achieve 60mph. This book opens with an account of the design and development of the 3-litre prototypes against the background of WO’s experience as a designer, particularly his work on aero engine design in World War I. Then comes a detailed examination and analysis of the production 3-Litre – its engine, transmission, chassis and running gear – and its evolution through the ‘Standard’ model, Speed Model and Super Sports, with extracts from contemporary reports and road tests. This is followed by equivalent coverage of the 4½-litre and 4½-litre supercharged models. The author gives an account of the cars’ illustrious competition history, principally at Le Mans, and reviews the range of bodies offered by coachbuilders, from stark two-seaters to overweight limousines. Ten outstanding examples of the cars have been photographed specially for this book and are featured in detail in some 150 colour shots. There are also more than 150 black-and-white photographs drawn from archive sources. Offering an in-depth examination of theses splendid, charismatic Bentleys, this book provides a detailed point of reference for the many who care passionately about them, and makes a nice tribute to the men who made them. Jaguar: All the Cars (3rd Edition) Author: Nigel Thorley Price: £27.50 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 0 85733 3490 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk I have never really been a fan of books like this; ones that attempt to cover every model of one particular manufacturer. Often they try to be the marque ‘Bible,’ but usually the sections on each model are condensed to fit in with the book’s pagination and suffer accordingly. They offer a snapshot of each model rather than a definitive history. Thankfully, this book is much better than most. First published in 2003, and now brought right up to date with this 3rd edition, this extensively researched guide provides exhaustive reference detail for all Jaguar models, supported by facts, figures and photographs. Information provided includes technical specifications, production changes, chassis numbers, production quantities, colour schemes, options and accessories. For ease of reference, each model is covered in a separate chapter, and all information is presented in clear tabular form. Brought right up to date for this third edition to include all the latest models of XF, XJ and XK, this is a definitive reference work for enthusiasts, those looking to buy a Jaguar and anyone with a general interest in the marque.

www.cprmag.co.uk Volvo P1800 - From Idea To Prototype And Production Author: Mats Eriksson & Kenneth Collander RRP: £44.95 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 918627571 6 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk This book tells the story of the Volvo P1800, about the time when the first idea was born and the process that led up to its design, engineering and the first years of series production. A story which had no given answers, a story full of dramatic and exciting events, a story filled with challenges and problems. The story brings the reader back to 1956 and covers the events up to 1963, letting the people who were part of the project and process behind it tell us what really happened, richly illustrated with photographs that have never been published before. This book is the Svenska Volvo P1800 club tribute to the Volvo P1800, to the people who made the car, put it into production, created the myth, and the enthusiasts of the world that care for the Volvo P1800, its heritage, its history and its future. Morris Minor Traveller : The Complete Companion Author: Ray Newell RRP: £32.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 1 906133 450 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk For 60 years the Morris Minor Traveller has been a familiar feature on British roads. Unpretentious, uncomplaining and half-timbered, in an age of sleek pressed steel, Travellers were to be seen everywhere, laden with schoolchildren, dogs, or jumble for the jumble sale, buzzing bravely along at no great speed. The book’s author Ray Newell is an acknowledged authority on Minor matters, and here he begins by providing in-depth descriptions of all the 803cc, 948cc and 1098cc Traveller models, with details of production and specification changes. Following a chapter on building the Traveller, the book covers topics such as the Danish-built 1000 Combi, military, naval and police Travellers, one-offs and variations, and commercial Traveller conversions – even a hearse. Especially intriguing is the stretched three-door ‘Shooting Brake’, first converted in the late 1950s, and its recent restoration is covered in words and pictures. Countless Traveller owners have had to face – with a sinking heart – the need for replacement of the timber framework of the body, a major undertaking. A unique and outstanding feature of this book are the chapters devoted to this task by specialist Steve Foreman, set out in step-by-step format with 150 accompanying photographs and covering dismantling and replacement as well as restoration and partial replacement. The final section of the book deals with upgrades available to bring the Minor’s performance, braking and suspension up to more modern standards. These include engine replacements, five-speed gearboxes and disc brakes as well as less radical modifications. With some 450 colour and black-and-white illustrations in all, including specially commissioned photography of outstanding examples of the cars, this is truly the owner’s complete companion to the Minor Traveller.

Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations.
