Both the website and the magazine itself have been given major revamps, and as you can probably imagine, there is much more to them than meets the eye. The magazine has been given a fresh new look, complete with a new logo. Many of the regular feature pages have been redesigned and now use a cleaner, faster loading layout with optimised images. The magazine is now also fully mobile compatible and can be read on most mobile smart-phones and devices, including the Apple iPhone and iPad. Our new state-of-the-art formula is so advanced that you don’t even need to download an App to view the magazine on Apple products, and there’s no need to go through iTunes either. Just go straight to our new website, punch in the password, and you can read every issue of Classic, Performance & Retro completely free of charge. Our new website is one of the most advanced on the internet as it is built using brand new HTML5 technology. What we have on there at the moment is just a taste of what is possible and we will be adding lots of exciting features to the site over the coming months. The website should be compatible with most mobile devices and should offer seamless navigation on phones, tablets and PCs, so you can access the magazine anytime, anywhere...even on the move! Silverstone Classic

Grand Prix Masters and Group C Top Silverstone Classic This summer’s Silverstone Classic (July 26-28) is all set to be another record breaker following confirmation of an action-packed programme of 24 races spanning eight decades of motor sport history. Already firmly established as the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival, the line-up for 2013’s festival features all the hugely popular historic Formula One, sportscar, GT and touring car grids that produced some close racing last year, plus a further three grids to be announced in the coming weeks. The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association (HGPCA) will be out in force with packed grids for both pre-1961 and pre-1966 F1 cars that revisit five decades of technical rivalries from the Bugattis of the 1920s, through the Maseratis and Ferraris of the 1950s to the dawn of the rear-engine era in the early 1960s when Britishbased constructors such as Brabham, Cooper and Lotus came to the fore. Grand Prix Masters puts the spotlight on the following generation of DFV-powered F1 cars, reliving a fantastic decade of GP racing from 1968 to 1978 as well as the rise of many of the British teams including Brabham, Lotus, McLaren, Tyrrell and Williams. Harking back to what many believe were the halcyon days of the world famous Le Mans 24 Hours event, no fewer than five sportscar and GT grids are also on the unrivalled Silverstone Classic bill. Heading these are the super-fast Group C prototypes that once again will race into dusk on Saturday evening. Last year’s entry featured legendary machinery from Jaguar, Mercedes, Peugeot and Porsche as well as a trio of Ferrariengined Lancia LC2s. An even more alluring line-up is promised for 2013. Tickets are on sale now at the Silverstone Classic website: www.silverstoneclassic.com

Breakfast Classics!

The pub is located on the A30 between Hartley Wintney and Blackbushe in Hampshire, and is run by car enthusiast and Triumph TR4 owner Jerry Mahoney, who says that the meets regularly attract around 80 cars. Shelsley Success

First Breakfast Club of the Year Hailed a Great Success The first Shelsley Walsh MAC Breakfast Club meeting of the year, held at the historic hillclimb course on February 10, has been hailed a great success after approximately 150 people braved the dismal weather to attend. The non-stop rain did not deter a good number of club members and visitors from dusting off their cherished machines and driving to Shelsley Walsh for a get-together and to partake in the celebrated Shelsley Breakfast, served in the Stratstone Restaurant. MAC commercial manager Mark Constanduros said: ‘All things considered, we were both surprised and delighted at the high turnout and thanks must go to all those attending for making the effort in such dreadful weather.’ First time visitor Shara Harrison, of Droitwitch, arrived with friends in her John Cooper Works Mini (pictured above) and commented: “It’s great to be able to come along and have a close look at such a wide variety of cars, to meet friendly people and have a leisurely stroll around the paddock which simply radiates heritage, and we will certainly being returning next month.” www.shelsley-walsh.co.uk

Morris Magic

Morris Cars To Star At Spring Autojumble Beaulieu’s popular Spring Autojumble, now in its 20th year, will be held on May 18-19, in the grounds of the world-famous Beaulieu attraction in Hampshire. Events Manager Judith Maddox said: “This year’s show will be celebrating a number of significant motoring anniversaries including the Morris centenary and 50 years of the Hillman Imp, as well as displays by a number of classic car clubs.” The 1,000 Autojumble spaces will be selling everything motorrelated including parts, automobilia, literature and accessories, while the Motormart, on the Beaulieu Arena, will have up to 200 vehicles for sale, ranging from concours classics to restorable relics. In the Dealermart there will be a selection of quality classic cars for sale. The show’s Motormarque feature celebrates a significant anniversary in the history of a model that went on to become a legend, or started an iconic design trend. This year, in celebration of 100 years of Morris cars the Dorset branch of the Morris Minor Owners’ Club are putting on a special display of up to 300 vehicles. The club hopes to round up as many different types of Morris as possible to have a vehicle representing each of the 70 years Morris were in production and so far over 200 vehicle owners have registered their interest. Sunday highlights include Old Sodbury’s Land Rover Sortout, selling Land Rover and 4x4 parts and accessories and Trunk Traders, with amateur autojumblers selling their surplus car bits from the back of their vehicles. The Walkabout Auction, introduced in 2012, was a great success and will be repeated again this year. Taking place on Sunday afternoon, it offers an ‘end of show’ chance to buy and sell, giving exhibitors an opportunity to sell off surplus items of stock they don’t want to take home with them. For just £1, exhibitors can buy a box to fill with bits (larger items can go alongside), to be auctioned at the end of the afternoon. It’s a simple and easy way of buying or selling those last bits from the show and there are no auction fees to pay. There is a special on-the-day, inclusive price of £9.70 for adults and £7.50 for children, or less if booked in advance on the ticket hotline: 01590 612888, or online at: www.beaulieushop.co.uk

Restoring Brooklands Brooklands

Museum secures Heritage Lottery Fund support

Brooklands Museum has received a firstround pass for a £4.85million bid from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the Brooklands Aircraft Factory & Race Track Revival Project. The project aims to relocate, restore and reinterpret the Museum’s Grade 2-listed Wellington Hangar as The Brooklands Aircraft Factory, with a new annexe to house more of the Museum’s outstanding collection of historic aircraft, and restore the section of original race track on which the Hangar currently stands. Included in the project, which aims to inspire current and future generations to embrace science, technology and engineering, will be enhanced learning opportunities, a training scheme in historic aircraft restoration and a raft of new activities on the race track. The initial funding allocated by the HLF for this project is £286,500, to which the Museum will add further cash and volunteer input to allow development work to a total value of almost £410,000 to be undertaken, helping Brooklands Museum progress its plans to apply for the remainder of the full grant in 2015. It is planned to completely restore the Hangar on a new site adjacent to its current one, allowing the Finishing Straight of the Race Track to be brought back into use for both motoring and aviation activities. Fittingly, in view of its original purpose, the Hangar itself will be presented as an aircraft factory, its displays showing how aircraft from the earliest pioneers to Concorde were designed, built and developed at Brooklands over an 80-year period. The “Factory” will be an interactive learning centre, in which visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an aircraft manufacturing plant and try for themselves many of the crafts and skills used by thousands of workers in Brooklands’ manufacturing heyday. In a new adjoining “Flight Shed”, the Museum’s active aircraft will be kept ready to roll out onto the refurbished Race Track for static and taxying demonstrations, while in new workshops underneath that building Museum volunteers will learn and practice aircraft restoration skills. Brooklands Museum Director Allan Winn commented: “This most welcome HLF funding will help us restore a famous historic building and safeguard internationally important aircraft, to give our visitors the only place in the country where they can see how aircraft were (and are) designed and built. It will also allow us to bring a significant part of the world’s first motor-racing circuit back to life – and to use all those elements to inspire youngsters, especially, to engage with the nationally-vital subjects of science, technology and engineering.” www.brooklandsmuseum.com

Masters Two For 2013

Masters Historic Racing to run two FIA Historic Championships from 2013 Masters Historic Racing will run two FIA Historic Championships from 2013 onwards, after taking over the running of the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. In addition it will launch an FIA-sanctioned championship for sports cars in 2013, based on the series formerly known as World Sportscar Masters, running alongside each other at all events in 2013. In addition, the FIA Historic Formula One Championship will boast two champions in 2013, with a champion crowned from the later generation ground-effect and flat-bottomed cars and one from the earlier non-groundeffect era making sure that everyone has a title to aim for in 2013. While the concept of the new FIA Historic Sports Car Championship, and regulations pertaining to that series, have been approved by the FIA’s Historic Motor Sport Commission, the series still requires ratification by the World Motor Sport Council of the FIA. The WMSC next meets on March 8, 2013 in Geneva. Ron Maydon, President of Masters Historic Racing said: “I am delighted that we have been able to take on the FIA Historic Formula One Championship. We have worked closely with the FIA and are grateful to John Hughes for his efforts to make this happen. We are delighted with the terms of the FIA agreement, which offers us freedom and security to develop both series in the coming years. We are pleased to be able to maintain our entry fees similar to previous levels, with added the added benefit of FIA Championship status. We hope we will be able to provide a focus for an excellent Historic Formula One category in 2013 and beyond, running alongside the new FIA Historic Sports Car Championship.” John Hughes, President of the FIA Historic Motor Sport Commission, said: “This is a very exciting and important time for historic motor racing. By entering into this agreement with Masters Historic Racing, the FIA is able to provide drivers with a far stronger Historic Formula One Championship than in recent seasons and can proudly announce a new FIA championship for sports cars. By working with Masters, the FIA can give drivers an opportunity to race a number of cars over a race weekend allowing them to maximise track time. Owners of historic Formula One Cars will be able to enter other races for which they have cars rather than just one race that may have been the case before, as well as Masters keeping entry fees to an affordable level by economies of scale. We are confident that the future is bright for historic Formula One and for FIA historic championships.” “This is the start of a whole new era for Masters Historic Racing and a tribute to how far we have come in the last nine years” said Ron Maydon. “It is a new challenge for us and one that we are looking forward to immensely. We are thrilled to be able to play this important role in the future of historic motor sport.” The first event for both new FIA historic series will be Barcelona on April 12-14.

Mini Cooper Register

Beaulieu Birthday Bash for Mini Cooper Register

On Sunday 9 June, at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the Mini Cooper Register will be celebrating the 50th birthday of the all-conquering Mini Cooper S. “The first model off the production line in 1963 was the 1071 cc Cooper S so for this year’s National Mini Cooper Day we plan to bring together the largest gathering of 1071s since the first cars left the factory,” says event organiser Tony Salter. All 1071 cc Coopers are welcome and they will be given pride of place in a dedicated parking area by the main arena. Selected cars and their owners will be asked to parade their cars around the arena as part of the day’s many activities. There will also be a display of Cooper S models through the years from the earliest 1071 to the very latest new MINI variant of the Cooper S. Another annual Beaulieu attraction will be the rare collection of club members’ Ex-Works and Special Tuning cars and coach-built classics from Radford and Wood & Pickett. For 2013 the club is putting a lot effort into attracting more trade stands, particularly autojumble dealers, and there will again be a special area dedicated to private “trunk traders” who have spares to sell. The hotly contested concours competition is being slightly revised this year. Classes remain the same but entry will now be allowed on the day, providing the class has not been filled by pre-booked entries. Pre-booking will be cheaper at £5 per car plus the £9.75 cost of an advance admission ticket. Entry into the concours on the day will be £7.50 plus admission. Tickets for the 2013 National Mini Cooper Day are now on sale. Buying an advance ticket offers a significant saving on purchasing an admission ticket on the day. All tickets also provide entry on the day to the famous motor museum at Beaulieu. You can purchase tickets by clicking on the Beaulieu link at the club’s website. Traders and autojumblers who are interested in taking space on the day should call Tony Salter now on 02380 560073. www.minicooper.org

Race Retro Getting the historic racing season underway in style, Race Retro, held on February 2224, attracted its highest ever number of visitors. Simon Hazeldine went along.

f the Autosport show in Birmingham marks the start of the racing season each January, then Race Retro does more or less the same thing for the historic racing scene in February. This year the show celebrated its tenth anniversary and it has grown more popular with each passing year, and indeed the post-show attendance figures for this year confirmed a small increase over 2012.

Lets Go shopping!

The show gives both competitors and fans of historic motorsport a preview of the new season with organisations like the Historic Sports Car Club (HSCC), the Classic Sports Car Club (CSCC) and the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) all on hand to talk 16 www.cprmag.co.uk

Basically though, Race Retro is a giant historic motorsport themed shopping mall, with the added attraction of a little live action to keep people entertained, all set in the heart of Warwickshire at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh.

Alpine Fever Each year Race Retro tends to mark a notable automotive anniversary, and this year it was the turn of the Renault Alpine which is celebrating its 40th anniversary of its World

Unlike the Jaguar E-Type or the MGB, the Alpine isn’t one of the better ‘bread and butter’ classics, and despite being the product of a major manufacturer, the car remains

something of a mystery to many car enthusiasts. I still find that surprising, since in the right hands the Alpine will wipe the floor of nearly all its contemporaries, and is up there with the best rally cars ever produced. And then there are those drop dead gorgeous looks, especially those of the earlier cars. The Alpine is easily one of the most attractive things to ever emerge from France, rivalled only by the equally delectable actress, Emma De Caunes.

The first cars were built in 1961 and it was named the Renault A110 Alpine (pronounced ‘Al-peen’), although it was also known as the Berlinetta. There were two distinct body shapes associated with the Alpine; the early cars (1961 to 1977) with their Porsche-like curves with hints of 911, and then the later cars (1986 - 1991) known as the Alpine A610 GTA which

As usual, the show was laid out in the same format as previous years. There are four main exhibition halls at Stoneleigh and all are put to good use. impressive display came from the chaps at Classic Team Lotus. The Norfolk based outfit had really pulled out all the stops for this show and put on an outstanding display of Lotus cars and memorabilia to mark the 50th anniversary of the late Jim Clark’s World Championship. Norfolk, Trident was displaying its new Iceni, a biofuel powered car which can push 190mph and has a range of 2,000 miles on a single tank of fuel. It was causing a stir for two reasons; one, it was a brand new car and there was nothing ‘retro’ about it, and two, it was simply stunning to look at! Among those to take to the stage were Sir Stirling Moss, the voice of F1 Murray Walker, TV presenters Tiff Needell and Tony Mason, racing drivers Win Percy, Russell Brookes, Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams and Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis. Tiff Needell was also on the Thruxton Motorsport Centre stand which was promoting ‘fast lap’ experiences with the former Top Gear star (and one time Stig!) at the wheel.

Above Left: Tiff Needell was on the Thruxton stand. Right: Even the promo girls were ‘retro’ at Stoneleigh! Bottom: Lots for sale in the autojumble.

There was even few complete project cars looking for new homes. This hall is great if you are part way through a restoration as the sheer volume of tools and parts on sale means you will almost certainly come home with something. Other highlights at the show included ‘Whistling Billy’, a 1905 steam-powered car that

once recorded a top speed of 120mph! ‘Billy’ was making his first appearance at Race Retro and the car has been restored to a very high standard. It would have been great to see it outside on the ‘track’ blowing steam everywhere, but visitors had to make do with seeing it on the stand promoting the new Sywell Pistons & Props show which takes place later this year.

rally stage Outside on the specially setup ‘rally stage,’ more than 50 historic Group B rally cars were put through their paces in front of an enthusiastic but freezing audience. The cars were certainly driven with gusto aplenty, with one or two sending straw bales flying as they made off-track excursions onto the Stoneleigh grass. I 22 www.cprmag.co.uk

managed to watch for about half an hour before giving in to the biting cold, which was a shame because it was a highly enjoyable spectacle. I’m always fascinated by ‘barn find’ cars, those machines that were put into ‘storage’ many decades ago and simply forgotten about. I guess it’s the stuff of boyhood dreams; finding that abandoned racing car which you can revive to its former glory and once again

race to victory and a fairytale ending. One car that fitted that bill at Stoneleigh was the Lotus 19 chassis which was displayed on the Crosthwaite and Gardiner stand in Hall 2. It had undoubtedly seen better days, and the car was bereft of any bodywork, but lurking under all those layers of dust and surface rust was a fairly solid looking frame and an engine emblazoned with the famous Coventry Climax logo. The car was one of only 17 built and its original owner used it for hillclimb events in Switzerland. Crosthwaite and Gardiner now plans to rebuild the car and make it competitive once again. Another rather special car was gracing the VSCC’s stand in Hall 1. It was a 1935 Aston Martin Ulster team car belonging to Pink Floyd drummer and veteran car enthusiast, Nick Mason. This rare car will be competing in a special centenary race for

hammer time! Across the road from the main halls, Silverstone Auctions was busy selling a variety of interesting cars. The highest price of the day went to a beautiful 1953 Connaught AL10 once raced by Roy Salvadori made £193,000, which was still below the estimated £200-250,000. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was the Lola T70 MkIIIB which was used in the epic 1971 film ‘Le Mans’ starring Steve McQueen. The car was estimated to sell for between £570,000 £650,000 but sadly the bidding tailed off way before those figures were reached and the car remained unsold. All things said, I quite enjoyed Race Retro again this year. If

I had to pick holes, I would say that there wasn’t really anything new there and it was more or less the same as the last few years. That said, why change a winning formula? I would also be neglecting my journalist ethics if I didn’t mention that I heard several people grumbling about the ticket prices. A full price adult ticket cost £25.00 on the door, which is actually more expensive than the Footman James Classic Motor Show which must be ten times bigger than

Renault Alpine. Race Retro. Still, there isn’t much else like this show and it is about the one and only time that historic racing car owners can actually go somewhere and get a bit of ‘retail therapy.’ Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face...as long as you leave the wife at home! Bremen Classic Motor Show

It might not be as famous as the mighty show at Essen, but the Bremen Classic Motor Show in Germany, held on February 1-3, still has a very impressive selection of cars on display as David Harrison found out when he paid a visit.

N

ow in its 11th year, the Bremen Classic motor Show is still a relatively new event on the international classic car calendar, but in that short time, it has established itself as one of those shows that is talked about in the highest echelons of the classic car industry. What we have here is very much a case of quality over quantity, and while nobody could argue that Germany’s premier classic car show at Essen is anything but slick, the Bremen show has a air of 24 www.cprmag.co.uk

exclusivity about it that the Essen show doesn’t. I hadn’t been to this particular show before, but since all the people I know that had been were full of praise for it, I thought it was time to give it some serious consideration. Now usually I would have ruled it out as being too far away and too expensive. We are in a recession after all! But on closer inspection of a certain budget airline’s website, I found I could get a flight direct into Bremen airport from London Stansted for

just £43.00 return. Seriously. I spent more than that on petrol last time I went to the classic motor show in Birmingham! Okay, I had the indignation of becoming ‘self-loading freight’ with ‘Europe’s most popular budget airline,’ but to be honest it wasn’t too bad. At least I didn’t have the company of the ‘bucket and spade brigade’ queuing up for the flight to Benidorm. An hour and twenty minutes later and I was in Bremen (yep, took longer to drive to Birmingham too!) and

after ruling out car hire as an unnecessary expense (after all, I was only here for the day), I managed to find a courtesy bus going straight to the exhibition halls.

themes The show was spread across seven medium sized halls with additional space being utilized outside for car sales. As with many shows, each hall at Bremen had its own particular subject or theme. Hall 1 catered for the motorcycle and scooter market; Hall 2 was mainly tools, models, books and other accessories; while Halls 3 and 4 were pretty much the same as Hall 2. Looking around these ‘retail’ halls it became apparent that the Germany classic car scene is a very healthy one indeed. Most of the vendors had gone to great lengths and spend a considerable amount of time and money putting their stands together, and the whole thing gave an overall impression of quality. Hall 5 held a variety of classic car clubs each with their own separate displays, while Hall 6 catered for the historic motorsport and modern classics and Hall 7 contained more club presentations.

British Minis So, enough of the background stuff, what about the cars? Well, the first ones to catch my eye (being a true Brit!) were to Mini Coopers on the makeshift grid belonging to the ‘FHR Touring Cars and GT Trophy’ stand. The cars were being used to promote the popular German race series which this year sees races taking place across

motorsport world, and if there is one thing the Germans are good at, it’s building fast cars. One of those was a car that ruled Le Mans in the mid1980s - the Kremer Porsche 962. The car on display wore Leyton House Racing Team colours and looked great in its original sky-blue finish. Of course, while we are talking about Porsche, it would be March 2013 27

unthinkable not to mention the iconic 911 at some point. Sure enough, there were several at the show, but the one that stood out for me was the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 3.0. Essentially, this was an evolution of the Carrera RSR 2.8, with some body-modifications, such as a larger rear wing, wider body and wider front bumper. Like the 962, the this car was very easy on the eye and I defy anybody not to be impressed 28 www.cprmag.co.uk

with the size of that massive rear wing! Stepping back a few decades, back to the 1950s to be precise, and one of the cars from this era was a real gem. It was a 1951 Jaguar C-Type and was in fact the actual car that won the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hour Race in the hands of Peter Walker and Peter Whitehead. It was a tough race, one remembered for its unforgiving nature which claimed the life of French

driver Jean Larivière in the opening stages. Average speeds reached 150mph and Stirling Moss recorded the fastest lap with a time of 4.46.8. To see this historic car at the Bremen show was a real treat and I still find it amazing that so many of these ex-Le Mans winners are still around. As I headed back to the airport I reflected on what I had seen and came to the conclusion that the Bremen

Classic Motor Show must be one of the classic car world’s best kept secrets. I’ll admit I found the language barrier to be hard going at times (I can get by if France and Spain, but German...no chance!) by I was on my own and happy to wander around and just take it all in. The show was well organised, in a way that only the Germans can do, and the quality of cars on display was second to none. I still cant get over the fact that it costs less to get to Bremen, and takes less time than it does to travel from my home in Hertfordshire to the NEC in Birmingham. Well, it does if

In the garages you don’t factor in the waiting around at the airport. Either way, I was impressed enough to go back again next year. Maybe I’ll even invest in a German phrase book... Object ‘art motorsport style!

While I’m At It...

Part III

(...or Mind your Ps & Qs!) Charlie Costa brings us the latest installment of his Triumph TR3 restoration project.

I

n this, part three of my article called ‘While we’re at it’, I’d like to change course a bit and, if I may, drift from the present namesake title and change the name to ‘Mind your P’s and Q’s.’ For all you Brits reading this, please don’t confuse that phrase with that proverbial last call at the Pub referring to Pints and Quarts. Although I wish it did mean that; I’ll have to disappoint you and say that I’m writing this to convince you, before you start that restoration, to pay attention to what won’t seem important at the time... or...to better explain it, and to put it into a more succinct phrase...while dissembling 30 www.cprmag.co.uk

your LBC (Little British Car), please pay careful attention to where stuff goes or better yet, where stuff came from. I’m talking here about every part, no matter how small. And to take it one giant step further, every nut, bolt, and

screw. Not only where it goes, but take the time to draw out even where that nut, bolt, and screw came out of, or onto it’s neighbouring nut, bolt, or screw. Sound confusing? Well, if you don’t bother to do what I’m

suggesting here, then it will be confusing...very confusing, indeed. How do I know that? Yup, you guessed it! I didn’t log how every nut, bolt and screw came out during that very easy dis-assembly. Oh I was having so much fun

taking things apart six years ago when this all so innocently began. Listening to my radio in the background, whistling along with those old fifties tunes, joyously bringing me back to the day when I bought my first 1960 TR3a. Oh yes,

I should have listened when more than one restorer had mentioned to me that I should bag and label everything. “When the time comes,” I can hear them now... “You won’t remember where things went.” “What me?” I said as I whistled March 2013 31

and sang my way into oblivion. So, long story short? Here I stand six years hence, in front of a table with many unlabeled zip-loc baggies, all loaded with those nuts, bolts, and screws I mentioned, lined up like soldiers all in a row. All unlabeled, and not having the slightest idea where they belong. They sit now, just as I left them, ahem....six years 32 www.cprmag.co.uk

Let’s see now...where did our last article end. Let me check that May 2012 article on page seventy. Ahhh...I had just finished up fitting the panels before bringing ‘Trumpy’ to the painter for her final dress-up. Ah yes...and my wife Pam and I had decided on Signal Red. “If I had it to do all over again, what would I change?” We’ve all said that before, so let’s talk about that one. Trying the hardtop for size! What would I change? Well, to mention a few: I’d learn ago. Now it’s payback time. how to weld...learn how to I won’t dwell on this any metal fabricate...learn how to longer for fear of embarrassing do body work...learn how to myself further, except for spray paint so it looks like a one thing, and another bit of professional job. wisdom I’d like to pass on. and hard work can suffice in making us any of those things. So what’s left? Somewhere along the way, we will have to hire those tradesmen. Now... how does one know which ones to hire? Which ones will do good by us? In plain language...how can we find

one we can trust? Scary, huh? Not so fast! There are plenty of nice folks out there...many honest folks, too. All it takes is a little old-fashioned gumshoe work. Ask around at your club. restoration. Listen to what they say, while heeding the mistakes they made along the way. Yes, learn from their mistakes. That being said... determine where you want to go with your restoration. How good do you want it to be? Leave it the way you bought it, and fix little things along the way? Will having a ‘driver’ satisfy your needs? Will a repaint do the trick? Or perhaps a good wet-sanding instead? Then there’s the ‘drive it for a while’...maybe a few years to decide what she really needs. What ever your final decision... go For It! And enjoy! But keep one train of thought while traveling that road. After deciding on how much money and time you think it will take...double the first item and triple the second. Yes, rest assured, it will cost twice the money and triple the time you had planned. Or is it the other way around? I forget! It March 2013 33

doesn’t matter anyway. The most fun of any restoration, or at least mine, is when it’s in your hands. When you are doing the things you can tackle yourself. The most frustrating times is when your baby is off to any of those professionals mentioned earlier: the metal fabricator, the body man, or the painter. And it’s not only because you have to pay for labour here, but just for the fact that it’s out of your hands, plus the fact that you have a feeling of inadequacy. Oh, how I wish I could weld...paint...etc. Enough of that, Charlie! You can’t weld...paint...etc. Get over it!

So, all assembled once again, and snugging up the panels and tub as best I could I sent ‘Trumpy’ off to the paint shop for her final dress-up, but not before I had the idea that I would save money. After the car came back from John O’Connor, the body man, said: “Why don’t you block sand it yourself?” That would save some more money, and besides, how difficult could it be? Loud buzzer! Wrong! After ruining a perfect primer and guide coat, I went to a local body shop here in Stoughton, Massachusetts,

Who To Trust? So, like I said in part two of this saga, off to the welder/ metal fabricator she went. Jim Walcott, of Rutland, Massachusetts, is a well known Volkswagen enthusiast, and one of the best metal fabricators around. We paid him an honest wage for an honest job well done. called Apex Auto Body, where I met Sean. His thick Irish brogue keyed something in this restoration weary brain of mine, telling me that he may... just may...know something about my ‘Little British Car.’ So, being apprehensive about how one of those fly-by-night paint jobs would ruin all of the careful work put into ‘Trumpy’ to this point, I shook Sean’s hand the moment he said he’d tackle this job. It ended up being the most important and smartest agreement of my adult life. Ahem...don’t tell my wife, Pam!! I’ll have to stop here and

Primer applied in professional spray booth. explain just what that agreement consisted of before I move on with the story. Sean came to my barn to check out the TR3, and, looking at the body sitting back on the chassis, decided that the body work was to his liking, and that all he’d have to do was a little final block sanding, some seam-sealing here and there, a re-seal with a final coat of epoxy primer. We decided on a one stage paint for the tub, with a two stage paint and clear-coat on the wings, bonnet, and generally, just about all that showed at a curbside view. I was pleased with his price and, most of all, with his attitude. Sean also mentioned that it would have to be on his back burner most of the time, because he’d have to tend to what really paid the bills...his insurance cases. I could well understand that. We agreed!

Removing the body from the chassis, once again, I put the tub back onto the rolling jig I had made and trailered the car to Sean’s paint shop. That was in the beginning of July 2012. Long story short here, so as

not to bore you with details... Each time I’d visit ‘Trumpy’ in her new surroundings, Sean would point out something he hadn’t seen in his first assessment. A tiny ding here, a misalignment there, too

Sean loads the car onto the trailer for delivery back to Charlie. big of a gap here, some other thing he didn’t like there. All in all, he just about redid the complete tub; filling, sanding, and then some. He re-primed the whole thing and sprayed rubber undercoating on the underside before sealing and block-sanding the panels for it’s last hurrah. Oh, and did I tell you that Sean said that he gave me a price that he would 36 www.cprmag.co.uk

her back to me for the final assembly. The two Richies (as I call them), my son and cousin, helped me take ‘Trumpy’ back to my barn and, using a chain hoist, we took the tub off of the rolling jig and lowered it back onto the chassis for the last time, and proceeded in placing and fitting panels in situ. We found a few very small things amiss. The left wing didn’t quite meet the A-post perfectly, the front lower corners of the doors didn’t stick to. What was happening quite meet the backs of the here is that Sean took ‘Trumpy’ wings. We decided it looked under his wing, giving her all good enough to bring her back the TLC he would give if she to Sean for the final painting. were his own. And to top it You guessed it! Sean did not off, I found out very quickly agree! Being the perfectionist that Sean is a true perfectionist, that he is, he spent the better leaving nothing to chance. part of the following few days “getting it right,” as he’d Seeking Perfection say. Not only did everything All primed, and ready for her fit when he was finished, but final painting, Sean gave I’d venture to say that the fit

The car looks superb back in Charlie’s workshop. was better than the factory fit was, some fifty odd years ago. Sean had gone ‘above and beyond’ what was expected of him once again. Needless to say at this point. I had found a true craftsman... and I knew it! I was getting used to hearing things like: “I had to redo this wing,” or “I didn’t like the way this looked, so I did it over again,” or “We decided to put more seam sealer here.” It went on and on, until he felt confident that he’d done all he could before the final painting. I being a true believer now that, if Sean thought it was good enough, then it WAS good enough. Pam and I were planning on leaving for our usual Florida wintering on December 30th. Wouldn’t you know that on December 29, 2012, all of five months since leaving for the paint shop, I got a call from

Sean telling me that Trumpy was ready to be taken back to her barn. He said that she was all painted, except for a few of the body panels. Calling the ‘Richies’ back, we promptly returned to see her unveiling.

Classy Lady Even though she had not been out of the paint booth for more than two hours, and before her final buffing, her shine and beauty easily looked better than anything I had ever seen. She sat proudly, showing off her classic lines to her peers. I could see ‘Trumpy’ feeling her best now, as she stood there in her new dress-up. Oh, by the way, did I tell you that Pam and I had changed our minds on painting her Signal Red? Yes, we decided that ‘Trumpy’ would need a more conservative colour to

match her new classy look. Red would have been too flashy for such a beautiful lady. The next step will be her final assembly. That dreaded wiring harness, the upholstery, and that chrome trim. How will I do that without scratching the paint? There is so much more. Then, of course, those unexpected surprises that we all know will be sure to happen along the way. I’m looking forward to these final stages, because the work will finally be back in my hands, like it was when this all began, six years ago. I’ll be able to do it at my own pace, sometimes even being able sit with the two ‘Richies’ and ‘Trumpy,’ alone in the barn, the three of us sipping that well earned cup of coffee. I would imagine that ‘Trumpy’ would prefer tea! March 2013 37

Rétromobile, held in Paris on February 6-10, promised an automotive feast that any petrohead would enjoy, and as Phil Sullivan found out, it didn’t disappoint.

I

t’s a bitterly cold morning in the French capital. I have to remind myself that I am in Paris, France, and not Moscow in Russia, as the icy wind stings my face. Thankfully, sanctuary is not far away, and it’s not long before I pass through the doors of the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre, home of Rétromobile. I spend a few minutes thawing out; this place is busy! Hardly 42 www.cprmag.co.uk

Exotic metal on the Fiskens stand. surprising as Rétromobile has gained a reputation for being the best classic car show that France has to offer, and the standard of cars on display is always extremely high. As I was about to find out, this year would be no exception.

Naturally, there seemed to be classic Renaults and Citroens nearly everywhere I looked, but the ‘petrolhead’ inside me guided me straight towards some of the historic motorsport gems on display. After all, I was in France, home of the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, Le Mans Legends so you could be sure that there would be at least a The hustle and bustle inside the main halls was incredible. few battle weary warriors from the world’s greatest It was clear that the cold endurance race on display. temperatures had done Sure enough, the sleek lines little to deter the car mad of a 1989 Porsche 962C Parisians from visiting the catch my eye. this impressive Group C car at the Silverstone Classic some years ago, but despite regular outings on the track, it still looked every inch a show car. It had history too, having been raced at Le Mans in the hands of the Almeras Brothers. Elsewhere, the stand belonging to the Fédération Française du Sport Automobile featured three rally prepared Renault A110 Alpines and a 1978 Renault F3 car once driven by Alain Prost. I should add that the FFSA stand was just as impressive for its construction as its cars, as the whole display was housed under a massive custom built pagoda. Very impressive!

Ooo la la! Auction house Osenat had some impressive cars.

Dark & Gloomy One thing that Retromobile does suffer from is poor lighting. Sometimes, the halls are really dark and dingy, and the cars seem to be lurking in the shadows. Some might think the low lighting give the place atmosphere, but in reality it just makes it harder to enjoy the cars. This isn’t a problem unique to this event though; the NEC back home in the UK also suffers from terrible lighting, but it isn’t

quite as bad as this. As usual, there is an auction being held at Retromobile, and this year sees some stunning cars pass under the gavel. Top seller this year was a 1936

Talbot-Lago T150, which made €1,461,800, but perhaps the most unusual lot was the one that was on display outside the main doors of the exhibition halls. It was a Dassault March 2013 43

Mirage V jet fighter. It failed to sell during the auction, although what a new owner is supposed to do with it, Lord only knows as it has no engine and would be banned from flying in most countries anyway! Still, a certain Mr Clarkson once purchased a Lightning jet to use as a garden ornament, so who knows! Once again I really enjoyed my time at Rétromobile. Yes it was dark and gloomy in places, and no, you can’t get a decent cup of tea there, but the cars on display are quite simply stunning, and that is what the show is all about, right? If you haven’t been to this show before, I can highly recommend it, and if you are travelling from the UK like I did, just hop on the train and it will take you straight to Paris in no time at all. In fact it is so fast, you can go to the show and still be home in time for a quick nightcap before bedtime. Give it a try...you wont regret it!

Held at the NEC, Birmingham, on January 10-13, Autosport - The Racing Car Show and The Engineering Show marked the start of the 2013 racing season. Simon Hazeldine went along to see what was on offer.

J

ust sometimes, going to these major car shows gives me an inescapable feeling of déjà vu, and when you think about it, it’s hardly surprising. Same venues, same exhibitors and same people; it makes you wonder why anybody would go back a second time. But go back

48 www.cprmag.co.uk

they do. Year after year, the loyal followers of these events buy their tickets and make their annual pilgrimage to view the acres of alloy, steel and carbon fibre laid out before them with military precision. Yep, sometimes you wonder why. But Autosport International is a

little different from your average car show. Yes, it does attract a sizeable public attendance, many of whom turn up to drool over the F1 cars and gaze at the glamour models (or is that the other way around?), but the event also acts as a trade show where the latest developments

in the motorsport industry are presented before the men in suits with big cheque books. Consequently, the first two days of the show (Thursday and Friday) are ‘trade only’ days, while the weekend sees the doors thrown open to the general public, race fans and assorted

tyre kickers. Usually one day at the Autosport show would suffice, but this year I was lucky(?) enough to go on two days - one trade day, and one public day. The contrast was remarkable. The first two days of the show take on a more relaxed atmosphere than the public days,

which can be a little frantic. In fact, I had heard the public days described as being like a cross between a zombie apocalypse and the London Riots, perhaps a tad harshly, but more on that later. The trade days are graced with a far more serious clientele, with most serious racing teams

sending representatives to do a little ‘networking’ and perhaps even some big spending. To cater for this, Hall 9 was used to house The Engineering Show during the trade days, and even though I wasn’t in the market for £million computerized milling machine or carbon fibre oven, I still found it extremely enjoyable. Seeing some of the machinery in action and watching as a complex part was cut from a solid aluminium block right before my eyes was an unusual, though fascinating, form of entertainment. It is perhaps here in The Engineering Show where most of the serious money changes hands, and according to the organisers, last year’s event saw £800 million of new business created between 700 exhibiting suppliers and the visiting 28,000

More Of The Same? Back in the main part of the event, affectionately named The Racing Car Show, things were much the same as the previous years. Don’t get me wrong, that isn’t necessarily a criticism, far from it. If you’ve hit on a winning formula, why change it? After all, ‘if it aint broke...don’t fix it’, right? And to some degree, that is what this show does. It follows the tried and tested format and deviates as little as possible from that each year. Of course, there are some that might argue that ‘familiarity breeds contempt’ and there is of course a danger that no matter how slick the show is, it can all get a bit dull. With the cheapest adult tickets costing over £30,

LMP2 car from Status Racing. plus £10 to park the car, then add in food and petrol expenses, a visit the show might cost close to £100 in total. That’s a lot of money to see a show that isn’t that different to last year’s, no matter how good it is. Anyway,

enough of me playing Devil’s advocate.

DeltaWing So what was at the show? Well, fans of Le Mans and sports car racing might have noticed the

concept, but park it next to a Ferrari 458 or any of the LMP cars and it just looks darn ugly! While we are on the subject of sports car racing, it was interesting to see the LMP2 car from the Status GP team gracing the K&N Filters stand. The Lola built chassis features a 3600cc Judd engine which powered the car to a podium finish in its first ever ELMS race. The team is planning to run cars in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race, World Endurance Championships and the GP3 race series.

Last Year’s Cars? It was interesting to see how little interest was being shown in the F1 Racing Display, with its dazzling selection of F1 cars, during the trade only days. On the public days, the F1 cars are constantly surrounded by a large crowd of visitors, but during the trade days they attracted very little attention. I guess the trade boys had other things on their minds, but it was a good display all the same. The idea is that there is one of last year’s cars from each of the Formula1 teams on show, but in reality what you get is mainly mock-ups, exhibition cars or older machines dressed to look like newer cars. One such example was the car from Ferrari. The 2012 car from Maranello was distinctive thanks ‘boxer’s nose’ which featured an

54 www.cprmag.co.uk

up to the ‘last year’s cars’ billing, but the Ferrari was the most noticeable to my eye.

New Cars Revealed Of course, there were new cars at the show, some of which

were even being unveiled for the first time. Sadly none of the F1 teams decided to reveal their 2013 cars at the event, but that didn’t detract form those that did grab a slice of the limelight. One of these was the ultra-cool Radical RXC (or Radical Xtreme Coupe). Peterborough-based Radical Racing is perhaps best known for its one-make race series where the factory supplied cars are driven by owner/drivers in hotly contested races. The RXC however is aimed more at ‘track day’ drivers as it can be driven on both road and track. Looking rather like a scaled down LMP Le Mans racer, the RXC has an impressive spec sheet. This is a clean sheet design, and not as you might expect just one of the Radical racing cars with a roof. The Radical’s engineering team set out three-and-a-half years ago in an attempt to design and develop the world’s most extreme road-legal coupe. The car boasts a 3.7 litre Ford V6 engine producing 380bhp, returning a top speed of 175mph and 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds. To put that in perspective, the Bugatti Veyron does 0-62mph in 2.6 seconds. The body - which is mounted on a space-frame type chassis - features full width carbon bi-plane rear wing and ‘gullwing’ doors.

It’s A Sin! Another eye-catching new car on show at Autosport was the Sin - a sleek white two seater designed to offer similar levels of performance to a GT Sportscar. The car is a collaboration between Britain’s Pro Formance Metals and Sin Car GmbH from Munich in Germany, and like the Radical, is based on a spaceframe chassis. The manufacturer

This 1966 ‘427’ AC Shelby Cobra sold for £205,000. plans to produce a road legal version powered by a 6.2 Chevrolet V8 engine producing a whopping 500bhp. Should be quite some machine. Across in Hall 19, the latest version of the Ariel Atom was being unveiled to much fanfare, even if it did look pretty much the same as all the other Ariel Atoms. The imaginatively titled Ariel Atom 3.5 can hit 62mph in 2.7 seconds and has

a top speed of 155mph. First thoughts are that those specs are remarkably similar to the aforementioned Radical RXC, but that has a roof and somewhere to put your sandwiches (though no actual cup holder!). Having said that, the RXC will sell for £107k while the Atom will set you back around £30k. Now some might argue that the extra £77k for the Radical car is a lot of money for some snazzy bodywork, especially

since the Atom will scare you just as effectively, but to use a topical term, it’s very much ‘horses for courses.’ So what does the Atom 3.5 offer? Well, according to Ariel you get a stiffer chassis with improved traction and balance while the supercharged version of the 2.0 litre Honda iVTEC K20Z4 engine gets a boost to 310bhp. Ariel also used the show to unveil its new race car, the Ariel Cup. The

‘track only’ machine will take part in a UK-based one-make race series based on a similar series in the USA. It differs from the road car in that it has more enclosed bodywork, full roll-over protection and Honda’s 245bhp 2.0 litre Type R engine.

Meet The Stars! One of the main attractions of Autosport, at least as far as the public visitors are concerned, is the chance to meet some of the great names from the world of motorsport, and this year’s line-up of stars certainly didn’t disappoint. Biggest name was undoubtedly Sir Jackie Stewart, while other talented drivers such as Johnnie Herbert, Paul Di Resta, Allan McNish and Derek Bell also signed autographs for visitors. Newly crowned World Touring Car Championship Rub Huff also made an appearance at the

56 www.cprmag.co.uk

show, and so did Jason Plato, BBC’s Jake Humphrey and DTM Champion Gary Paffett.

Live Action Arena If you are a fan of screeching tyres, get turned on by handbrake turns and love the aroma of burning rubber, then you would have enjoyed the Live Action Arena. I saw it last year and was distinctly underwhelmed, so gave it a miss this year, although speaking to another journalist confirmed that it was pretty much the same. Top Gear does it better - leave it at that.

Iconic Collection Across in Hall 20 was a stunning display featuring some of the racing cars and vehicles associated with Sir Jackie Stewart’s long career. Among these was the 1973 Tyrrell 006 F1 car that carried Stewart to his third and final world championship title.

Also on display was a Stewart Ford SF01 Formula1 car from 1997 which was driven by Jan Magnussen, while a large 1970 Team Tyrrell Leyland Commer car transporter at the back of the display was, according to Stewart himself, actually recovered from a sunken ship and bought by the team for a knock-down price!

Under The Hammer Then there was the collection of cars assembled for the Coys auction which was held on the Saturday afternoon. Among the cars on offer was ‘Del Boys’ bright green Ford Capri Ghia complete with full Tiger fur interior. This was the actual car used during the filming of later episodes of the TV comedy, ‘Only fools and horses’ and was still fitted with all the ‘tasteful’ additions seen in the programme. The car failed to attract any bids high enough to reach its reserve and remained unsold when

bidding finished, although Coys stated that a deal was in the process of being done after the show ended. Another car that failed to sell during the auction was a stunning black Schuppan Porsche 962CR. This is basically a road legal Group C car and is ultra rare being one of just six such car built. Another ‘star’ car was a 1974 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow once owned by flamboyant Queen singer Freddie Mercury. The car smashed its pre-sale estimate of £10,000 and eventually sold to a Russian businessman for £74,600. It was a hefty price for the car, especially considering its poor condition and the fact the Queen singer never actually drove it himself. Chris Routledge of international auctioneers COYS, said: “Autosport 2013 proved to be another successful event for COYS in Birmingham on Saturday January 12th. It underlined the

global reach of this event with the Freddie Mercury Rolls Royce selling to Russia and other notable sales being made to Japan, the west coast of the US and Colombia.”

Good Show Overall I’d have to say that this year’s Autosport show was okay. It wasn’t one of the best, but there was more than enough there to keep most visitors amused for a whole day.

Perhaps the highlight for me was seeing the collection of Jackie Stewart’s cars and getting to hear the man himself talk about the machines on display as well as his illustrious racing career.

It will be interesting to see if next year’s show deviates at all for the current formula. I’m guessing that it probably wont, but whether that is a good thing or not, I’ll leave for you to decide. I’m still looking forward to it.

WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME

OUR DOCTRINE REMAINS THE SAME...

• Keep stocks high - you cannot sell a product if you don’t have the stock • Never lie to a customer - if supply is going to be 6 weeks, be honest and tell them so • Try to get every order out the same day • Keep the customer informed • Never take a credit card swipe or raise an invoice unless the goods are to hand • Sell value for money products - not the cheapest nor necessarily the best, but that which our experience suggests is good for the job • Offer advice if you feel capable of doing so but don’t talk rubbish!

Back in the 70’s, a Quick Ratio Escort Rack cost £200 plus. We developed an inexpensive DIY quick conversion kit and sold thousands, but now competively priced as a complete rack.

With the passage of time it’s easy to forget the ideas that Rally Design have developed that has kept the good old RWD Escort parts affordable to all. Some of our present customers were not even born when we first started from our lock-up garage unit!

We were the pioneers of bolt-on dedicated 4pot braking kits using the inexpensive Wilwood ally racing callipers, copied now by some of the biggest names in performance braking, but we were the first!

Still the only company to produce polyurethane suspension bushes by the injection moulding process, resulting in a high quality bush together with stainless crush sleeve at a very low price.

Such an inexpensive way to convert any 2” (50mm) old strut into a coil over unit. Simple ideas are sometimes the best. The roller top mount has always been a critical service item. Rally Design invested in press and moulding tools to ensure this vital part continued in production

Until Rally Design invested in new tooling, the industry relied on reconditioned old struts - now many in the shock absorber industry use Rally Design’s stub axles in their performance strut units.

All our coil springs are produced on OEM style N. C. Coilers - Minimum order of 300 coils per size. Our stock investment of over 20,000 springs has transformed the unit cost and quality of this vital suspension part.

Adjustable ‘in-situ’ TCA’s manufactured from new drop forged tooling eliminating all welding for a stronger, smarter and cheaper product. Weld-on double width kit eliminating the problem of TCA ‘pull forward’ or ‘tuck back’ positioned the double width unit exactly to your requirements. Combined with Polyrace bushes to suit varying roll bar dimensions.

Twin cam roll bar similar story to springs. Settled on 2000 pieces to ensure continuity of supply.

Taper leaf springs - we searched Europe and then Asia for a Taper Rolling Mill - Yes Sir! Minimum order quantity 20 tons. How many springs is that? - 20 tons worth Sir!

Roll cage padding - We invested in new tooling to buy direct from a foam converter. Minimum hands in the supply chain results in a BI fire retardant product which is well priced.

Our buyers found a battery produced for medical applications in large numbers which had the right spec and at an amazingly low price. Thousands in use.

Classic Ford Wheels - Purchased from one of the largest OEM wheel manufacturers to JWL standard, the best quality wheels at such a good price. Wheels always available ex-stock.

We searched the world to find the source manufacturer of the genuine Vermiculite manifold wrap. Now badge engineered by others but we are the European source.

AND NOW... Rally Design have invested in 15

new press tools to produce the Escort 1 or 2 balance Bar pedal Box with pressed pedals and design similar to the original Boreham converted box but at a price similar to box section pedals - doing the job right!

The RMD Maximum protection seat, priced at £99.50 plus VAT receives glowing reviews from our customers.

Silicon hoses - Fed up with the terrible delivery of UK hose manufacturers we invested in 500 new mandrel tools to produce this product direct from the moulder - we now have over 20,000 hoses in stock for instant dispatch. No delivery problems ever again.

Coys managed to assemble a good selection of cars for Autosport.

COYS Autosport International auction saw bidders battling for Freddie Mercury’s Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, which reached £74,600, more than six times its guide price. This very special Rolls Royce Silver Shadow was bought for Freddie Mercury’s personal use by his managing company Goose Productions Ltd. in 1979 and pre-sale expectations estimated it could sell for just £9,000 to £11,000. After fierce bidding, on the telephone, with four active callers at one point, the car was finally sold to a Russian businessman. Chris Routledge of international auctioneers COYS, said: “Autosport 2013 proved to be another successful event for COYS in Birmingham on Saturday January 12th. It underlined the global reach of this event with the Freddie Mercury Rolls Royce selling to Russia and other notable sales being made to Japan, the west coast of the US and Colombia.” The auction also featured the 1980 Ford Capri S from BBC sitcom ‘Only Fools and Horses’, exactly as seen on television, complete with the garish green paintwork, tiger fur interior and pink aerials, but this exotic car didn’t reach the guide price with a highest bid of £12,000. A post sale deal is currently being negotiated. 64 www.cprmag.co.uk

Bidding fizzled out at £12,000 - not enough to buy Del Boy’s Capri Ghia!

Other important collectors’ cars that went under the hammer included a unique 1935 BMW Typ. 309/328 Veritas with FIA papers that sold for £249,000, a 1966 ‘427’ AC Shelby Cobra that hit £205,000 and a 1955 Alfa Romeo ‘Disco Volante’ Evocazione that went for £91,700. Chris Routledge called it a Porsche day as two 911 Carrera RSR Spezifikation’s hit £60,900 and £84,000, a 1972 Porsche 911S Rebuilt to ST went for £124,700 and a 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Speedster3.2 was sold £63,100.

Shelby Cobra made £205,000 at the auction.

Bentley Tops Bonham’s Paris Sale

A 1929 Bentley 6½ Litre Speed Six Tourer attracted the highest bid of the day at Bonhams’ Paris sale on February 8, earning a respectable €828,000. In the late 1990s the Speed Six was purchased by German collector Helmut Karbe, who had it specially prepared for the ‘Around The World’ rally, an 80-day marathon run between 1st May and 18th July 2000. Modifications made for this most arduous undertaking included installing a roll bar, under-tray, special seats and safety belts, altered exhaust system (to enable the car to ford rivers) and twin fuel tanks of 150 litres each. This immaculate Ferrari 275 GTB/4 went for $1.8million.

RM Auctions kicked off its 2013 auction season on a strong note on January 18, with an impressive $36.4 million in sales and a strong 89 percent of all lots sold at its single-day Phoenix, Arizona sale. Held at the prestigious Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa, the results represent an all-time high for the international auction house in Arizona, and more significantly, a more than 42 percent increase over the company’s 2012 sale. Headlined by the record-setting sale of the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione’, as many as eight cars achieved million-dollar-plus results, with numerous new auction records being set. Bidders hailed from 17 countries around the world, with a strong showing of European enthusiasts as well as collectors from as far afield as Brazil, Argentina and Australia. “Our fourteenth foray into Arizona this year was as exciting as ever; our clients from around the world were joined by our equally international team of specialists, from California to the UK and it made for a spectacular, history-making event,” says Shelby Myers, Managing Director, RM 66 www.cprmag.co.uk

One of just 29 built, this Shelby 427 ‘Semi-Competition’ Cobra sold for just over $2million.

Auctions – California. Top sales honours went to the sale catalogue’s cover car - the alloy-bodied 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta ‘Competizione’, chassis 1905 GT. Widely revered by collectors as one of Ferrari’s most prized Berlinettas, 1905 GT spurred a fierce bidding war between multiple collectors in the room and on the phones, eventually selling to its fifth owner for a remarkable $8,140,000. The outstanding sales price represents a new world record for a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta sold at auction. It was not the only car bearing the ‘prancing horse’ emblem at the auction as there were no less than 11 examples from the famed Italian marque. Among a long list of additional highlights were a truly stunning, Ferrari Classiche certified 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 for $1,842,500 and a magnificently restored, concoursstandard 1954 Ferrari 250 Europa Coupe for $1,017,500. American-built cars also attracted strong

attention at RM’s Arizona sale. Headlining this group was a genuine and fully documented 1967 Shelby 427 ‘Semi-Competition’ Cobra, one of just 29 S/C Cobras built, which well-exceeded its pre-sale estimate resulting in a final sales price of $2,007,500. A 1931 Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster, offered for the first time in more than 40 years, was also hotly contested, realizing a strong $1,320,000. Rare Duesenberg Model J Derham Tourster fetched an impressive $1,320,000.

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads! The DeLorean Story - The Car, The People, The Scandal Author: Nick Sutton Price: £17.99 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857333148 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk Many people associate the DeLorean car with the Back to the Future films, but this insider story of the rise and fall of the DeLorean Motor Company, The DeLorean Story, is just as incredible, featuring embezzlement, sectarian violence, an FBI drugs sting and the direct involvement of Margaret Thatcher and her government – all told by a senior member of staff who was there from start to finish. The DeLorean Story is the first account of the scandal written by a former employee, Nick Sutton, who was a senior manager at the DeLorean Motor Company (DMC), and sheds light on the political, business and social story from within the factory. The short life of the eye-catching DeLorean DMC-12 sports car – a vision of the future with its gullwing doors and stainless steel body – began after John DeLorean secured financial backing from the British government to produce the cars in Northern Ireland, bringing muchneeded employment and investment to a troubled region. In a blaze of publicity, the DeLorean dream arrived in Belfast in the summer of 1978, attracting the brightest managers from the global automotive industry. The challenge was to build a car and a factory in 18 months with two prototypes and 72 acres of muddy fields in West Belfast as the basic ingredients. The arrival brought newfound optimism to the area and created hundreds of jobs in the city, but money shortages and civil disturbances – the IRA hunger strike campaign occurred at this time – caused major disruptions. Four years and almost 9,000 cars later the company went bust and John DeLorean’s dream turned into a nightmare as he was tried for alleged drug offences, eventually to be found ‘not guilty’ due to entrapment by the FBI. His apparent charmed life continued when he was also found ‘not guilty’ of embezzling the missing equity money from the Belfast factory. His big ally, Colin Chapman of Lotus, also drew posthumous scrutiny. Prior to John DeLorean’s trials, Margaret Thatcher vetoed a plan by a UK consortium to restart the DeLorean site, which would have provided over 1,000 jobs. This book suggests, for the first time, that the former Prime Minister may have had knowledge about both the embezzlement and the drugs sting, and chose to reject the proposal to rid the country of a company whose name was about to be dragged through the mud. The DeLorean Story reveals everything about the car, the people and the scandal, from 1978 to 2004, and is written by a man who was there from beginning to end. Ford Mustang - First Generation 1964 to 1973 - The Essential Buyer’s Guide Author: Matt Cook Price: £9.99 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 978-1-845844-47-9 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk Ah, the classic Mustang. Perhaps the Daddy of all American ‘muscle’ cars and responsible for upstaging more than a few Hollywood legends in films like ‘Bullitt’ and ‘Gone in 60 Seconds.’ Buying a good one it tougher than you might think, since a lot of these cars have been badly restored over the years by unscrupulous dealers looking to make a quick buck. This book however, will help reduce your chances of buying a ‘lemon’ and hopefully guide you to the car of your dreams. Learn the strengths and weaknesses of Mustangs from an author with years of experience performing ground-up restorations of these iconic cars. Learn what models and variants are on offer and what popular upgrades are commonly performed by owners, and their effect on market values. Whether you want a show-car, a daily driver or a restoration project, all the key points and checks are here, ranging from paperwork to market values and from trim to engine condition. This book is the essential companion when looking to buy one of America’s original Pony Cars.

www.cprmag.co.uk Build Your Own Dream Camper Van for less than £1000 - That’s including the cost of the van! Author: Matthew & Stuart Ball RRP: £19.99 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 978-1-845845-24-7 Available From: www.veloce.co.uk Hmmm...not exactly a classic or performance car book, but having given it some thought, this could in fact make quite a good addition to your bookshelf, especially if you are into historic racing or rallying and spend many weekends away at events. I wont tell you what this book is about as the title pretty much covers it. Suffice to say, it is written in a light-hearted style, and despite the limited budget, the end results are actually quite impressive. The book works on keeping any technical expertise down to a minimum and everything is explained in easy to understand, step-by-step instructions. There are even tips on how to source a suitable van, with our intrepid authors settling eventually on an LDV having ruled Transits out as ‘too expensive!’ Everything is explained in detail; fitting windows, building a bed and cupboard units, fitting a gas oven (seriously!) and fridge/freezer and even a kitchen sink! The end result would make a perfect ‘race support’ vehicle or you could just use it to tour the numerous classic car shows held across Europe each year. An entertaining read, and if you’ve never wanted to build your own camper van, you will after reading this! Motor Sport Greats Author: Simon Taylor RRP: £19.99 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857332509 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk In 2006 Motor Sport magazine asked Simon Taylor to take memorable motor racing names out to lunch for a monthly in-depth interview. The ‘Lunch With…’ series soon became a renowned and much-loved feature, and now the best interviews have been collected into book form for all motor sport fans to enjoy and to treasure - Motor Sport Greats. Motor Sport Greats presents in-depth interviews with 24 ‘motor sport greats’, all characters with a story to tell. The idea was to get them to suggest their favourite pub or restaurant for a good meal and a halfdecent bottle, and gently prod them into opening up their memories and opinions with frank and honest insights about themselves, about the people they’d known and worked with, and about the people they’d raced against. The result is a compelling read, beautifully crafted by one of Britain’s top motor sport writers. Charismatic Formula 1 World Champions from the seventies to the nineties are here, including Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Jody Scheckter, Alan Jones, Keke Rosberg, Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell, all of whom share colourful memories over a diverse array of lunches. Andretti chose a cheeseburger in his home town of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, while Rosberg preferred to chat in Monaco with only an espresso, to save his waistline. Modern British heroes from contrasting arenas of motor sport are included: triple Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, Formula 1 driver-turned-pundit David Coulthard and Land Speed Record holder Andy Green. Other great racing drivers in Motor Sport Greats are Chris Amon, Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Brian Redman. Three interviewees are sadly no longer with us: the great Professor Sid Watkins, who entertained the author in the drawing room of his Scottish manse; Tom Wheatcroft, owner of Donington; and Roy Salvadori, gentleman, story-teller and racing all-rounder. Lunches with Christian Horner, Gordon Murray, Roger Penske, Ross Brawn and Jo Ramirez complete this collection.

Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations. Research the type of car you are buying so you know what to look for. If you are unsure, take an expert along with you.
