Editorial Forget hedge funds, offshore bank accounts and company pension plans, because it seems the new way to accrue a nice little lump sum for your retirement is to stash an early example of a sports car in a garage...and forget about it for 40 years! That is what happened to a 1961 Jaguar E-Type ‘Flat Floor’ Roadster that was recently offered for sale by Bonham’s auction house with an estimate of £20-30,000 (see News Page 6). The car had been parked in a garage over four decades ago and was ‘rediscovered’ inside the dilapidated building covered in a thick layer of dirt and dust. The interior was covered in dirt, bird mess, mould and mildew and was way beyond a quick clean with a damp cloth, and just a cursory glance confirmed that the car would need a total ground up restoration, so you can imagine our amazement when the hammer finally fell at a whopping £102,020. Okay, we get that it’s a very early example of one of the most desirable cars ever made, but...wow! A little research on the web revealed that a similar, yet fully restored E-Type, also a 1961 ‘flat floor’ example, sold for just £35,280 in an auction last year. In fact, Bonham’s themselves sold a restored ‘flat floor’ car in 2011 for £53,200 including premium. That car was chassis number 850305, while the ‘barn find’ car was chassis number 850060, just a 245 car difference, so what’s going on here? To have the car professionally restored would probably cost upwards of £40,000, so the finished car could total nearly £150,000 when done. The auction catalogue said: “...there can be few of its kind left in such original condition,” which is great, but because it requires total restoration, all that originality will most likely disappear in a skip. Answers on a post card please, because we’re baffled. There is no denying that the new owner will end up with a very collectable car, but it’s never had a famous owner, and has no notable history as such, so not much in the way of provenance. We just can’t figure it out. I guess some people just like very dusty cars! On a different note, we have been blown away by the success of our new mobile friendly magazine format, with the March issue being viewed over 900,000 times! Simply incredible, I’m sure you’ll agree, and naturally we thank you for your support. We have been ironing out a few bugs on the new website and once we are completely happy with it we will take down the old site which we kept as a back-up. Forgotten ‘Barn Find’ E-Type Sells For £109,020 The Jaguar E-Type is a pretty memorable car, so it’s hard to believe that somebody ‘forgot’ that they had one sitting in a dusty barn for nigh on 30 years. But it seems that may have been the case for one of the cars in Bonham’s Hendon sale on April 29, where a ‘barn find’ E-Type sold for an amazing £109,020. The car is one of the earliest surviving examples of the marque, having rolled off the Jaguar line just a few weeks after production started. ‘564 DFJ’ was purchased by the vendor in February 1965 from Jaguar dealer A J Beal of Exeter, and used regularly until around 30 years ago. Taken off the road, it was stored outside, covered over, for the first five years and then garage stored until it was recently ‘discovered.’ The original hood was included in the sale and the car also comes with owner’s manual, data plate, old-style logbook and Swansea V5 document. New Concours Classes At Salon Privé 2013 This year’s prestigeous Salon Privé event, held at Sion Park in London on September 4-6, will feature eleven new classes in the hotly contested Chubb Insurance Concours d’Elégance competition. The new classes are: Celebrating 100 Years Of Aston Martin; The Iconic Porsche 911 At Fifty Years; 50 Years Of Legendary Lamborghinis; Wind In Your Hair; The Beauty Of Streamlining; ‘Little Saloons’: The Birth Of The Berlinetta; Graceful Pre-War Motoring; Post-War Competition Greats; The Art Of Design: Pininfarina; Sporting Motorcycles From The 1920s To 1970s, and finally, One-Offs And Oddball Motorcycles. One of the cars scheduled to take part is a stunning 1949 Riley 105 Transformable Coupé which is entered in ‘The beauty of Streamlining’ class. The unique and very special Riley from Swiss coachbuilder, Walter Koeng, was originally purchased from Riley in Coventry as a running chassis in 1948. Koeng proceeded to build his ultimate dream car from the chassis up. The art deco influenced shape and aerodynamic form, with its sweeping lines and attractive curves, make the Riley a true one off which will only to be seen this year at Salon Privé. www.salonprivelondon.com

Rimmer On Tour!

Red Dwarf Star Joins London To Brighton Classic Run Self-confessed petrol-head, Chris Barrie – who played Rimmer in the hit TV series ‘Red Dwarf’ - will be joining the immensely popular London to Brighton Classic Car Run on Sunday June 2. Chris takes part in several classic tours during the year and says he is ‘delighted’ to join the run which is organised by GE Classic Motor Events. He is looking forward to meeting other classic owners on the day and will be handing out awards at the finish as the run celebrates its 25th anniversary at Brighton Racecourse. Chris will be driving his MGB GT which should be a rather more comfortable means of getting to Brighton than on a previous occasion. Chris explains: ‘Last time I took part in a London – Brighton run with a machine of my own was in 1997 on my Raleigh Pioneer bicycle. Hopefully this time it will be less strenuous!’ Another ‘star’ entering the event this year is a classic Italian police Alfa Romeo Giulia that featured in the film ‘The Italian Job’. Owners of modern day sports cars and kit cars are also catered for, with a separate run that is now in its thirteenth year. A unique carbon fibre Ronart W152 will be making an appearance on this run for the first time too. www.classicmotorevents.co.uk

TV Star On Display

Dad’s Army Van On Show A 1935 Ford BB Box Van immortalised as Lance Corporal Jones’ armoured car in the BBC TV series Dad’s Army has gone on display at the Charles Burrell Steam Museum in Thetford, Norfolk. The van made its screen debut in the first episode of the popular sit-com to be filmed in colour, back in 1969. It was sold in a recent Bonham’s auction and bought by Two Norfolk families, the Pearsons and the Jenkinses, benefactors of the Dad’s Army Museum. Starring Role For TS2 At Letchworth Show An important piece of motoring history will be on display at the Letchworth Garden City Classic & Vintage Car Club Annual Transport Picnic in June. TS2 is the first right-hand drive production Triumph TR and was completed along with its left-hand drive sister car TS1 at Standard Triumph’s Banner Lane, Coventry, plant on 22nd July 1953. Both cars were in many respects hand-built, as the production line had yet to be commissioned and they began the illustrious line of sporting Triumphs that won affection and fame on the road and in competition events. TS2 was purchased in 1976 by Keith Read, who was then motoring correspondent for the ‘Coventry Evening Telegraph’ newspaper. Keith commenced a full rebuild but unfortunately could not finish the restoration and, in a magnificent gesture, he donated this historic car to the TR Register. Picnic organising committee chairman David Davis said: ‘We are very excited to have such an historic Triumph joining us and are very grateful to the TS2 Trust and our club member Jon Marshall, who is also a member of the TR Register, for organising its appearance.’ The Picnic takes place on Saturday 8th June at Fairclough Hall Farm, Halls Green, Weston, Herts, SG4 7DP. £5 per vehicle on the gate. “The Biggest Touring Car Revival Yet!” The 2013 Silverstone Classic (July 26-28) will celebrate Britain’s evergreen passion for bumper-to-bumper touring car racing with a record number of saloon cars grids from the sport’s golden eras. For the first time in the evocative event’s history, the classic motor racing festival will include three packed touring car grids alongside as part of an amazing line-up of 24 races for unrivalled numbers of historic F1, GT and sportscars. With a capacity 58 car field, the Under 2-Litre Touring Car (U2TC) showdown for saloons from the early 60s is an established crowdpleaser at the Classic, and the Super Touring Trophy introduced in 2012 proved to be an instant success for fans of more modern tin-top racing in Eighties and Nineties. Both return in 2013 but now are joined by a new Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy grid featuring many of the mighty V8 muscle cars that dominated saloon car racing in the second half of the Sixties. Indeed it’s almost exactly 50 years ago that Silverstone witnessed the arrival of the first ‘Yank Tank’. It was on May 11, 1963, that saloon car legend Jack Sears debuted the 6.9-litre NASCAR sourced Ford Galaxie at Silverstone, promptly trounced the reigning Jaguars and totally transformed the sport for many decades. It was unquestionably a defining moment and two Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy races staged over the actionpacked weekend will mark the golden anniversary of Sears’ first win. Harking back to that halcyon era both will witness large numbers of the crowd-pleasing American machines taking on their more nimble European rivals from the same unforgettable period. The two-driver U2TC race also honours another important milestone in saloon car racing history – 50 years of the esteemed Lotus Cortina. Last year’s capacity 58-car grid included more than 25 of these racing deities and another huge turn out is guaranteed in July in a packed field that will also flaunt packs of battling Alfa Romeos, BMWs and Minis. www.silverstoneclassic.com

McCormack Tops WWRS RAC Rally Championship Round Two Marty McCormack and Phil Clarke swept to victory on the second round of the West Wales Rally Spares RAC Rally Championship, SG Petch Tour of Hamsterley on April 28. In a renewal of their tremendous sporting rivalry with fellow Ford Escort Mk2 crew Steve Bannister and Louise Sutherland that started on last year’s Roger Albert Clark Rally, McCormack and Clarke went 45s clear after seven tough and slippery stages in the Co Durham forest complex. Big crowds lined the stages to watch the spectacular action during an event that pumped an estimated half-million pounds into the local economy. “No real dramas,” said McCormack after taking the early championship lead with maximum points in the Rob Smith Rallying Series Three. However, round one winners Nick Elliott and Dave Price (Escort Mk2) had a rally to forget. “We were caught out by a slippery corner and put it in the ditch on its side,” said Elliott after sliding off the opening stage. Spectators finally got them out, and they levelled times with McCormack on two stages before pulling out, too far down to score useful points. www.rallies.info

FIA Masters Historic Championships Blast Off At Barcelona The new era of FIA Historic Championships kicked off in style at the Circuit de Catalunya last weekend, with Joaquin Folch and Bobby Verdon-Roe taking a win apiece in the FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship and Leo Voyazides/Simon Hadfield claiming honours in the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship. Under a cloudless sky, local hero Joaquin Folch (Brabham BT49C) triumphed in a stunning FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship openers, chased hard by Bobby Verdon-Roe (McLaren MP4-1/B). The two flashed over the finishing line just nine-tenths of a second apart, while Nathan Kinch brought his McLaren MP4-1/B home third. Verdon-Roe turned the tables in race two as Folch retired, but a stunning effort by Michael Lyons gave him second place in his Hesketh 308, while Belgian legend Jean-Michel Martin (Fittipaldi F8) was third. On the combined results of the two races, class wins went to Mike Wrigley (March 711), Michael Lyons, Ian Simmonds (Tyrell 012) and Verdon-Roe. Leo Voyazides/Simon Hadfield (Lola T70 Mk3B) were victorious in the new FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship as they won the opening 90-minute race. They were chased hard early on by the similar car of Martin Stretton/Grant Tromans but when that was halted with mechanical problems, Carlos Monteverde/ Gary Pearson (Lola T70) assumed second with Michael Lyons third sharing Mike Wrigley’s Chevron B16. Chris Jolly and Steve Farthing (Cooper T61) took the podium honours in the Pre-66 sports car section of the race in their Cooper Chevrolet, followed closely by Keith Ahlers/James Bellinger (Cooper Monaco) and Pedro Macedo da Silva and Andy Newall (Ford GT40 Spider). Class wins went to Voyazides/Hadfield, Wrigley/Lyons, Jolly/Farthing, Peter Hallford (Chevrolet Corvette), Macedo da Silva/Newall The second round of the FIA Masters Historic Championships is at Brands Hatch on May 26th-27th

Monterey Magic!

Over 500 Historic Racers Set For Monterey Over 500 historic racing cars will take part in the much anticipated Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca Raceway in California on August 1618. A wide variety of cars will be present, from vintage machines dating back to 1911, right up to more recent cars from the 1990s. Expect examples from Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, McLaren, Porsche, Jaguar and Bugatti. The cars will be split into 16 classes according to age, engine size and type. Chevrolet will also have a major presence at the event as the manufacturer celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Corvette.

Historics At Donington!

Iconic P3 Alfas And ERAs To Star At Donington The HGPCA Nuvolari Trophy Race in association with Hall & Hall won’t simply evoke memories of pre-War Grand Prix racing at Donington Park, it will recreate it. Pioneering cars will race in their national colours and a number that originally raced there almost 80 years ago will compete at the track once more. Two iconic Alfa Romeo Tipo B (P3) masterpieces, including the 1935 Donington Grand Prix winner, head the fast-growing entry, which currently includes Alfa Romeo Monza and 1750GS models, Bugatti T35s and T37s and a T39, a bevy of ERAs built in Hall & Hall’s home town of Bourne, the raucous Frazer Nash Nurburg, four, six and eight cylinder Maseratis, the Parnell-MG and a wonderfully gruff Talbot-Lago T26SS. The sight, sound and smell of rare and historically very important racing machines returning to the circuit after so many years, cornering at Redgate and Coppice, negotiating the Craner Curves and barrelling along the Wheatcroft Straight, will provide an unforgettable spectacle that’s sure to have Festival visitors reaching for their cameras. The HGPCA cars will be out every day of the Festival, with qualifying on the Friday morning, Race One at 12.30pm on Saturday and Race Two at 2pm on Sunday. Of the ‘Donington’ cars taking part, the priceless straight-eight Alfa Romeo P3 of music impresario Tony Smith is of particular significance to venue historians as it is the very car in which celebrated Bedfordshire aviator Richard ‘Mad Jack’ Shuttleworth won the inaugural Donington Grand Prix in 1935. A sister car will be handled by German driver Stephan Rettenmaier. Richard Last’s Parnell-MG also competed in a pre-war GP at the circuit, and will wear number 17, as it did when Humphrey Cuddon-Fletcher raced it (as a K3 Magnette) in 1938. Richard Pilkington’s Talbot-Lago is another machine with great period history, including Grands Prix and Le Mans. Quickest of the Maseratis is likely to be the 1934 8CM driven for owner Chris Jacques by Dorset farmer Rob Newall, who raced Formula Ford single-seaters in the 1970s and remains one of Britain’s quickest Jaguar XK pilots. This car is dark blue rather than the traditional red of Italy, as it was originally raced by Prince Birabongese of Siam. English Racing Automobiles (ERA) were successful in the 1930s and the voiturettes, with their supercharged Riley-based engines, remain hugely popular. There are seven examples on the entry to date: R3A, R4, R4A, R5B, R9B, R10B and GP1. R3A – driven by Briton Mark Gillies, who is commuting from the USA to race – was the first ERA to compete at Donington Park, in April 1935, while new ERA owner Nick Topliss’ R4A won the 150-mile Nuffield Trophy at Donington in July of that year, in the hands of Liverpudlian Pat Fairfield. Pat Fairfield would die two years later, in a crash at Le Mans, and a memorial to him can be found at Donington Park. Peter Whitehead and Peter Walker drove R10B to third in the 1936 Donington Grand Prix, behind a pair of Alfa Romeos, and Whitehead went on to win the 1938 Australian GP in it. US-domiciled Irishman Paddins Dowling will race it this time, while Germany’s Rainer Ott plans to bring R9B – Charlie Martin’s 1936 Donington Park Nuffield Trophy winner. Another period podium car due to appear is R5B ‘Remus’, in which Prince Birabongse of Siam scored a second place and Tony Rolt won club races in 1938. It is now owned by American Charles McCabe. www.doningtonhistoric.com

SPYDERCARS continues to develop and expand its capabilities to now include the Spyder Zetec Conversion. This replaces the existing chassis and all suspension parts with reliable components. The engine and gearbox are replaced with a modern 2 litre 16 valve twin cam engine and a five speed gearbox. The suspension has been developed using double wishbone front and rear. The brakes are also fully replaced with larger vented disc brakes at the front and solid discs at the rear, which also have larger modern brake callipers. The annual National Austin 7 Rally, organised by the 750 Motor Club, takes place on Sunday 7th July on the Beaulieu Estate in Hampshire. On Sunday 9 June, at the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the Mini Cooper Register will be celebrating the 50th birthday of the all-conquering Mini Cooper S. “The first model off the production line in 1963 was the 1071 cc Cooper S so for this year’s National Mini Cooper Day we plan to bring together the largest gathering of 1071s since the first cars left the factory,” says event organiser Tony Salter. All 1,071cc Coopers are welcome and they will be given pride of place in a dedicated parking area by the main arena. Selected cars and their owners will be asked to parade their cars around the arena as part of the day’s many activities. Apart the Formula1 British Grand Prix, this should be the biggest event on the UK’s motorsport calendar. The World Endurance Championship’s ‘6 Hours of Silverstone’ boasts names like Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Corvette, Audi, Nissan and Toyota among the types lining up on the grid. Sitting in the drivers’ seats were well-respected names like Alexander Wurz, Allan McNish, Anthony Davidson, Tom Kristensen, Bruno Senna, Darren Turner, Sebastian Buemi, Nick Heifeld and Nicholas Prost. On paper, the ‘6 Hours of

Silverstone’ is a mouthwatering prospect, where a little slice of Le Mans comes to the UK for one weekend only. So what went wrong, I ask myself, as I look out at empty grandstands all around the circuit. Quite frankly, it’s embarrassing. Yes it is cold, damp and windy, but racing fans are a hardy lot and it takes a bit more than some inclement weather to keep them away from a good event. We have a round of one of the world’s top motorsport competitions right here at the self proclaimed ‘home of British motorsport’ and yet hardly anyone has turned up to see it. Some serious questions need answering. Now it could be unfair to blame the race fans for staying away. The tickets were for once very reasonably priced with a full weekend adult ticket for just £38.00. That’s all three days for less than forty quid!

So if it wasn’t the weather, and the costs were not the problem, what else could it be? If I had to take a wild guess I would say it was probably down to poor marketing. A lot of people I spoke to after the race were unaware that it had even taken place, and when I told then how much it cost, most said they would almost certainly have gone had they have known. If that is indeed the case, then somebody has to stand up

and take responsibility for this shambles, whether it is the people at the ACO, Silverstone or an outside agency. If this had happened at a Formula1 event, you can be sure that a certain Mr Ecclestone wouldn’t hesitate to cancel all future events at the same venue. It’s such a shame, because the otherwise deserted Silverstone saw some incredible racing over the weekend, as tight and competitive as you’re ever likely to see. May 2013 25


Legend Reborn A car that survived the World War Two only to be destroyed years later, few thought they would ever see the historic BMW 325 Kamm Coupé again. But then BMW Classic stepped in, and now the legend is reborn.

T

he famous BMW racing cars which made history in the 1940 Mille Miglia continue to enthral and delight wherever they go, but for many years, the fleet of silver BMW racers has been one car short. The BMW 328 Kamm Coupé, named after the German aerodynamics pioneer Wunibald Kamm, disappeared without trace back in 1953. However, 70 years after BMW’s Mille Miglia victory – BMW Classic has recreated this iconic racing car, once again illuminating an important milestone in both motor sport history and the development of vehicle aerodynamics. “We are very proud to be able to bring this car back into the public spotlight,” said Karl Baumer, Director of 26 www.cprmag.co.uk

Spare wheel storage is rather crude. the early 1950s. There was certainly no denying the historical value of this very special car and, after BMW founded BMW Mobile Tradition in the mid-1990s to oversee an extended reappraisal of the company’s history, plans were put together to build a reproduction. But the resurrection project proved to be a tricky undertaking. All design drawings for the car seemed to have disappeared into thin air and there

was hardly a rich supply of historical photos around either. It was only with the hands-on assistance of a private collector in Munich that the project team were able to gather together a much larger selection of photos showing the car from a wide variety of angles. Indeed, these even included a good number of shots detailing the car’s tubular frame construction. It was then the time to tackle the exacting task of piecing together a likeness

of the complete car from the available information. BMW’s computer specialists in the design department embraced the challenge. They started by scanning in the most detailed photos to use as a basis for a 3D geometry program. Then the few reliable constants, such as the wheel rim diameters, wheel offset, headlight size, door handles, wing nuts, indicators and BMW logos, were added until they appeared in the same position in every projection. Every image provided a fresh series of reference points for wheel arches, windows and other parts linked to the fixed constants. Gradually, the well of information deepened until the experts were able to produce a virtual solid model, in which every detail looked right in every view of the car. This was used to generate a program for a five-axis milling machine, which would cut an original-size model from a massive block of highly compacted foam. A restorer was then commissioned to stretch an original BMW chassis by 20 cm and build a steel space frame according to the templates provided by the photos. However, not long afterwards the project was put on ice. As part of the concept design process for the new BMW Museum an idea 30 www.cprmag.co.uk

was floated of rebuilding the intricate Elektron space frame of the Kamm Coupé as a showpiece for the ‘Lightweight design’ area of the museum. An exact copy of the original space frame was duly produced with the help of a specialist based near Munich. Aluminium was chosen as the material in place of the original Elektron, and the frame’s weight duly came very close to that of the original. Although this display frame was never intended to be used in an actual car, the Kamm Coupé idea remained on the table. In the end, it was a project initiated by the Meisterschule für Karosserie- und Fahrzeugbau Leipzig-Leisnig-Erlbach (master craftsmen’’s college for body and vehicle construction serving Leipzig, Leisnig and Erlbach) in partnership with the

BMW plant in Leipzig that got the ball rolling. The original plan was to cover the existing steel space frame with aluminium body panels to replicate the external appearance of the car at least. The Meisterschule produced moulds of the foam model in which the panels of the outer skin could be shaped. The finished body has since been on display at the Leipzig plant. With the 70th anniversary of the Mille Miglia victory fast approaching, BMW Classic was determined to bring its plan to recreate the Kamm Coupé to fruition. However, highly skilled specialists were required to turn the collection of individual parts into a car that could actually be driven. The BMW 328 Kamm Coupé was finally handed over to BMW Classic in a brief ceremony in March 2010. That left only a short amount of time to prepare the newly created racing car for its big day at the 2010 Mille Miglia – 70 years after its last, memorable appearance in the race.

Racing Lines A quick look at our own track day diary showed that there was a lot of track action happening around the country, so we though we had better check it out! Simon Hazeldine went to Blyton Park in Lincolnshire to find out what all the fuss was about.

hanks to some rather persistent snowy weather, the first few months of 2013 have largely been a bit of a wash-out when it comes to track days. I mean, who would want to go screaming into a hairpin at 120mph on show and ice? Nobody in their right mind... 32 www.cprmag.co.uk

Regular readers may recall that we paid a visit to this relatively new circuit last year, when the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club was using the facilities to lay a bit of rubber down on the new track. Suitably impressed by my previous visit, I decided to go back again and see how things

Sure enough, the paddock area at Blyton was filled with a wide variety of cars, ranging from Renault Clios and Ford Fiestas right up to GT40s and Ultimas. There was even a Radical SR3 taking part, and several Westfields, so there was certainly a great mix of cars. Since I wasn’t driving myself

(my Triumph TR4 would have been the slowest car on the track, and my Ford Mondeo... well, it’s not exactly a track car is it!) I had to rough it with the other spectators. The owners of Blyton Park have thoughtfully constructed a long grassy bank which spectators can stand on to get a view of the action. Normally, Cool paintwork!

that would be fine, but on this occasion the strong, gusting wind was doing its best to blow me off the bank and half way across the track! Just standing upright was a challenge. Since my last visit, Blyton Park has gained a new traffic light system to release cars onto the track with. It is just a

basic red/green light operated by the chap sitting in the adjacent hut, but it looks more professional than the previous ‘man with flag’ set-up.

Varied Line-Up

The day got started with drivers’ briefings for the early arrivals between 9am and 10am, with the first sighting laps taking place at 09.30am. It was certainly a varied line-up, with Westfields and Ultimas sharing the track with Ford Fiestas and Renault Clios, and pretty much anything else you care to mention. Some of these machines were obviously dedicated track day cars, and a great deal of money had been thrown at them to wring out every last drop of performance and handling, yet others were just ordinary, every day unmodified road cars. I have always like the ethos behind cars like the Westfields; you buy the kit, build the car to the spec you want, and May 2013 35

then take it on the track and see what it can do. It is because the cars are ownerbuilt that no two are ever the same, so essentially these track days are an opportunity to see if the builder ‘got his sums right.’

Westfield Fun

the day to take advantage to the reasonable weather, while others had come along as part of an organised meeting of Westfield Sports Car Club (WSCC) members. Among those was Andrew Reeves who had a rather impressive black Westfield with full rollcage fitted, and Ian Murray who turned up in a very similar car except it wore the classic

Lotus colours of green and yellow. The WSCC guys joined some of the regulars associated to the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club who have been to Blyton Park for the last couple of years. Sadly, this year didn’t see quite as many GT40s on track as last year - in fact there was just one single example! Still, at least it was a nice one.

One of the more serious racing machines at Blyton was a Radical SR3. Now if you have one of these as a track day car then you really know your onions; I mean, you even need someone with an external power unit to start the car for you, so not a car for ‘fair weather’ drivers.

Three-Wheeler former GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club media liaison person has sold his GT40 and bought a Lotus Elise SC. He certainly rates the Lotus and says it is great on the track, but being an old fashioned sort, I can’t help but prefer the lines of the iconic Ford.

Hairy Spyder

Another man in attendance who was positively chewing 38 www.cprmag.co.uk

up the Blyton track was Chris Varey in his Ultima Spyder. The dark blue ‘Awesome Hairy Beastie’ (that is what is written on the car and we’re assuming it refers to the car and not the driver!) is a seriously quick machine, but lacks those creature comforts that many of us find necessary...like a roof. Great car - if you like seat of the pants driving and chewing on flies!

One chap who seemed to be having an amazing amount of fun was the driver of the dark blue Renault Clio. Now the humble Clio wouldn’t usually even warrant a mention in the pages of an esteemed publication such as this, but the way he was pushing the limits of the car was entertaining to say the least. Spectators could be seen placing bets on whether


he would exit the corner the right way up, as the little ‘hot hatch’ hammered into ‘Ushers’ and emerged the other side on three wheels with a rear wheel hanging in the air. It looked pretty cool, but then there is a fine line between cool and an upside-down car!

Rally Escort It was also good to see Steve North’s ‘rally spec’ Ford Escort Mk2 out on the track. This is a car that is more used to going round corners sideways, much as it did at last September’s Nottingham Sports Car Sprint at Thoresby Hall, so the Blyton circuit probably didn’t prove too challenging. The Escort looked and sounded great though, and was certainly driven with some enthusiasm.

Overall, Javelin racked up another successful track day. There was a great mix of cars with classic, retro and modern machines all making the most of the ever improving

facilities at Blyton Park. It’s always good to see the track day scene thriving, and if this outing was anything to go by, then it should be a great summer.

For people who love classic cars. My friends tried to put me off her at first. They said I should go for a younger model. But deep down, I knew she was the one. It’s those good old fashioned values. They don’t make them like her anymore.

Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance When it comes to concours competitions, one of the most respected, and hotly contested, is the event held annually at Amelia Island in Florida. Words Jon Backshaw. Pictures Daren Winckel.

bsessive. That is the only word for it. If you enter the intense world of the classic car concours d’elegance competitions, you will encounter some of the most dedicated and competitive individuals that you will ever meet, regardless of which walk of life you care to tread. Now that may seem like insanity to many people, but that is exactly the sort of dedication that is required to become a 46 www.cprmag.co.uk

concours champion. And then some. It seemed somewhat bizarre, and slightly crazy, yet the more I learned about this mysterious art, the more I came to appreciate it. Originality is king in the concours world; a winning car will look exactly as it did when

it rolled out of the factory, and considering I wasn’t around when most of these cars were made, it gives a rare chance to see just what they were like back in the day. ‘Automotive time-capsules’ if you like. Now one of the best things about concours d’elegance competitions is that they


can feature just about every type of car, from the humble family saloons, right up to the priceless automotive exotica that all car enthusiasts dream about. One event which has gained a reputation for hosting the best concours cars in the world is the one held at Amelia Island

in Florida each year. Classic car owners travel from all over the world to take part in this prestigious event, and as expected, this year’s competition didn’t disappoint. Amelia Island 2013 will be remembered mainly for two types of car; the Ford GT40 and the lesser known, yet no

less desirable, Miller racing cars. I have always been a fan of the GT40, and have read many books on the type’s dominance of Le Mans back in the 60s, so to see the actual car that won the famous French endurance race in two consecutive years was a real thrill. GT40 chassis number May 2013 47

which included rare rear-drive 122s along with a front-drive Packard Cable Special and even a 1932 Four Wheel Drive,

a car which raced in the 1934 Indianapolis 500. 2014 Corvette Other prevalent marques included the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the Porsche 911 and Lamborghini, all of which were celebrating 50th anniversaries. And talking of Corvettes, Chevrolet chose Amelia Island to showcase the new 2014 Corvette Stingray, and boy does it look impressive! The ‘Vette


has finally shaken off that 90s styling and has a much fresher look about it, yet still retains the menacing presence of its ancestors. According to Chevrolet, the new car boasts 450hp and 450lbs/ft of torque from its new LT1 6.2 litre ‘Active Fuel Management’ small block V-8 engine, which means that the 2014 Stingray is the fastest and most fuel efficient Corvette ever produced. Back to the older cars (that’s what we’re here for, right?)

As you would expect, there were some stunning cars competing

in the category, but the eventual winner was the 1936 Duesenberg SJN Roadster belonging to Jack and Helen Nethercutt. This was the May 2013 49

This year, the award went to Judy O’Steen for her FMR Messerschmitt Tg 500 ‘Bubblecar.’ It was perhaps a surprising choice since there were some really odd looking cars on show, especially the 1974 Fascination built by the Highway Aircraft Corp which

looks like somebody welded parts of a boat, a plane and a car together to create... something that actually looks quite cool! Then there was the unrestored 1949 Veritas SP90 belonging to Dale Walkster. Not really a contender for a concours award considering its ‘barn find’ condition, but sporting

a whacky cartoon-like body built by Hermann Spohn Karosseriebau, of Ravensburg, this unique machine was once the main exhibit in the Lee Roy Hartung Collection. Atmosphere There were so many incredible cars at Amelia Island this year but it’s impossible to mention them all, and while the cars are the undoubted stars of the show, there is actually so much more that makes this a very special event. It has a wonderful atmosphere, helped considerably by the almost constant Florida sunshine, and

there can’t be many better ways of whiling away the hours than sitting in the shade of a tree sipping a chilled, ice-laden drink, surrounded by some

of the most expensive cars on Earth. If you happen to be in Florida on March 7-9, next year, make sure you head to Amelia Island and join in the fun. May 2013 51

The inner-workings of the distributor can be accessed via a PC or laptop computer, which can be used to map the ignition settings and advance curve. The 123\Tune software can be downloaded to the connected computer and the distributor will then power an electronic ‘dashboard’ with temperature gauge, manifold pressure, rev-counter, spark-energy gauge, and total-advance gauge. It looks superb, and would certainly make a beautiful, if rather over-sized, paperweight. Joking aside though, if you are serious about wringing every last drop of horsepower from your B-series engine, then this head is for you. It is exactly the same as the original in its five port layout, but being made from alloy it is some 60% lighter and is less prone to cracking. Being the same in all other respects means that owners can use their old valves or stock replacements, torque the head up to the same values, and use the same gaskets as usual. For those intending to rework the head, there is also the added advantage that aluminium is far easier to work and gas flow than cast iron. The Bubblecar Museum They might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s no denying that ‘Bubble Cars’ have bags of character and are loads of fun. Simon Hazeldine called in at ‘The Bubblecar Museum’ to find out more about these quirky cars.

I

f you one of those people who have an slightly eccentric and quirky personality, then you probably find the whole concept of the ‘Bubblecar’ quite appealing. It doesn’t matter to you that the cars are often too small to carry any practical load or sometimes even a passenger, or that they have questionable handling and laughable top speeds, or that some are even bereft of a reverse gear. No, all those points just add to the character of these odd little cars, and in your book at least, that makes them very collectable vehicles.

On the other hand, if you tend to be rather more traditional in your outlook, then you probably see Bubble Cars as unpractical, under-powered oddities with poor handling and a laughable top speed. I mean, what’s the point in a car that might as well have a calendar in place of the speedo and can’t be driven backwards? Surely it’s just a moped with a roof, isn’t it?

Remote Location Well, which ever camp you fall into, there is one thing that nearly everyone agrees on, and that is that Bubble Cars make people smile. They’re great fun, and because of that, there is actually quite a strong following for these miniature motors here in the UK. There is even a ‘Bubble Car’ museum which has been opened to showcase the very best (and worst!) from the world of ‘Bubbles’, so when a recent trip saw me in the Boston

Uninspiring building is home to motoring treasures!

area of Lincolnshire, I decided to drop in and see what was on offer. The first thing to strike me is just how remote this place is. As I drive across the Lincolnshire Fens, the landscape reminds me of the American Mid-West, with its massive, flat, featureless plains stretching out for miles. Lincolnshire is a bit smaller than the Mid-West, but still just as flat!

Noisy Neighbours!

Thankfully, the museum itself is pretty easy to find as it’s on a long straight road that runs from just outside Boston up to Coningsby. Now if you are an aviation enthusiast, you wont need me to tell you that Coningsby is home to a massive RAF station which is where the RAF’s very loud Typhoon jets are based, along with the Spitfires, Hurricanes and Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. More on that later though.

A sign on the gate marks the entrance to the Bubblecar Museum. Driving in, it feels like I have taken a wrong turn as it appears I have driven into a farm! No need to panic though as a glance at the address confirms that the museum is located at ‘Clover Farm,’ so this must be the right place. Apart from a collection of aging cars in

various states of disrepair parked adjacent to the car park, there is little here to suggest that this is a haven for ‘Bubblecar’ fans.

area where you pay the £3.00 admission fee plus an optional £1.00 for a guide book. First impressions are good, as the café at least has a nice ‘farmhouse kitchen’ feel about it. Another uninspiring door leads into the main museum building, which is, or rather was, previously a

barn. It is a little gloomy inside, but light enough to see all the exhibits of which there are plenty. Straight away it is apparent that the owners have made a bit of effort with the displays, as many cars are displayed as part of a diorama, with various props and scenery complimenting them.

The first one to catch my eye as I walk in is perhaps one of the most popular ‘Bubblecars’ of all time, the BMW Isetta, although this actual car is an early ISO built example. It is displayed emerging from a large replica ‘Tri-Ang’ model box, although at first glace I just assumed it was a box trailer! The car had no reverse gear and owners had to climb in and out of it via the large forward-opening single door mounted on the front of the car. This combination spawned one of those great motoring legends, about how some Isetta owners would arrive home and drive their car into the garage and right up to the wall. Since the only door opened forward, the owner couldn’t open it more than a few inches, and with no reverse gear to back the car away from the wall, the unfortunate driver was effectively trapped! It’s an amusing story,

but how true it is, is anyone’s guess.

Parked next to the Isetta display is another well known, and highly collectable ‘Bubblecar,’ the Messerschmitt KR200. This twoseater car carries its occupants in a tandem configuration under a hinged aircraft-style canopy. The car was designed by Fritz Fend and built at Messerschmitt’s Regensburg factory, the same facility that was used to produce Messerschmitt Bf109 fighter aircraft during World War Two. The public walkway leads visitors past a long line of ‘Bubblecars,’ such as the Meadows Frisky, the Bond Mark B, Mark C and Mark F, a Scootacar and a Goggomobil, while visitors are left to ponder why there is a recreation of a 1950s style kitchen squeezed in between the car displays. I guess it’s there to add to the 50s and

60s ambiance, since that was the era when most ‘Bubblecars’ were made. The kitchen isn’t the only domestic display though; there is also a 50s style ‘living room’ and a number of shop fronts have also been recreated. It’s an interesting distraction, but the connection with Bubblecars is vague at best.

Microcars Too I perhaps should have pointed out earlier that this museum also caters for ‘Microcars’ and not just ‘Bubblecars.’ One such ‘Microcar’ manufacturer was Bedfordshire-based Berkeley, and the museum has three examples on display from the miniature car maker. The Berkeley T60 was a tiny three-wheeler, big enough to carry two people, but only just. It had a single wheel at the rear end and was powered by a 328cc two-stroke, air-cooled engine. The Berkeley SE328 is a more conventional four-wheeler

and is actually a very pretty little sports car. The museum’s example still wears rally plates from the 2008 Liège-BresciaLiège rally which ran from Belgium to Italy and back; quite a test of endurance for such a small car!

Heinkels Too! Following the walkway around the hall leads me past some interesting displays, including a ‘scrap yard’ which contains a small collection of decaying micro cars (along with some rather over-sized rats!) and a display of a garage which seems to be owned by Fester Addams! Like the Messerschmitt mentioned earlier, another ‘Bubblecar’ with Luftwaffe heritage is the Heinkel (Trojan) Kabine. It seems that many of Germany’s best aircraft designers turned to car manufacturing after the war,

and designer of this small 175cc microcar - Ernst Heinkel - was no exception. It looks similar to the BMW Isetta, but utilises more Perspex and has thinner window frames. In fact, anyone familiar with the Heinkel He111 bomber will know what I mean when I say that the glazing on the ‘Bubblecar’ is strangely reminiscent of that on the

aircraft. The Heinkel ‘Bubblecars’ - which were later badged Trojan were built in Germany, Argentina, Ireland and later Croydon in England.

ten more cars on display on the first floor, along with a small collection of mopeds and even a hovercraft! Racing fans will no doubt be interested to hear that the Bubblecar Museum also has a Ligier car on display upstairs too. However, if you were expecting one of the famous Formula1 machines from the 70s and 80s, you’ll be disappointed. This particular Ligier is a JS4 designed

by Philippe Ligier and has a Motobecane engine, automatic gearbox and steel bodywork. Nearly 7,000 of these cars were sold, most due to its racing heritage.

Make A Day Of It! Overall I would have to say that the Bubblecar Museum actually offered a lot more than I was expecting, and at only ÂŁ3.00 to

get in, it did represent good value for money. Sure, some of the exhibits are a little rough around the edges, but when you consider that the whole thing relies on funding from the owner and money from admission tickets, you can understand that there is only so much that can be spent. That said, the museum also offers camping facilities to anyone who wants to stop over for a while, and the field behind the museum is available for club rallies too. It would certainly make an interesting alternative to some of the usual venues. You would probably struggle to spend a whole day looking around the Bubblecar Museum, but if you wanted to use your time wisely and really make

As mentioned earlier, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitor Centre is just a couple of miles up the road, so if you like planes and wartime history as well as cars, why not combine the two? I did just that, and it was fascinating to see ‘behind the scenes’ of one of the UK’s most famous, and thought-provoking, airshow acts. You get to see the mighty Lancaster bomber up close, along with all the Spitfires and Hurricanes currently at the flight’s disposal. They are all housed in one large hangar, and as well as the fighters and bomber, there is also the Flight’s Douglas C-47 Dakota, which sometimes stands in for the Lancaster, and the deHavilland

DHC-1 Chipmunks which the new pilots use to gain ‘tail-wheel’ experience. Outside the hangar, the main Visitor Centre contains a superb collection of displays which detail the history of the Flight, along with operations of the Royal Air Force during World War Two. There is also a small shop selling a nice range of gifts and souvenirs, which include some very attractive aviation wall art. I should mention that there are no refreshments available at the visitor centre though, so make sure you use the cafe at the Bubblecar Museum if you are visiting both locations. I enjoyed my visit to the BBMF, but I had to smile to myself when I remembered that just down the road in the Bubblecar Museum were products of Messerschmitt

and Heinkel, two of the companies that the RAF tried its hardest to wipe out during the war. Irony doesn’t even begin to cover it! If you’re in the Boston area, make sure you pay a visit to the Bubblecar Museum - you wont regret it!

The classic car sales held regularly at Anglia Car Auction’s Norfolk base in Kings Lynn are notoriously This Bentley MkVI Donington difficult to predict. Being somewhat off the beaten Special sold for £36,750. track, these sales can at times present some amazing bargains, while on other days it seems like every collector in the country has turned up and the prices go sky high. They do however also offer a superb variety of cars ranging from ‘starter classics’ for a couple of grand, up to serious automotive investment prospects with telephone number sale prices. The auction held on April 6, was well attended and there was a good deal of interest among the cars parked inside the viewing hall. A great selection of British classics was on offer and once bidding had got underway it seemed it would be a day of sensible prices. Perhaps the ‘star car’ of the day was an attractive 1967 Jaguar E-type Series 1 Roadster which sold for £44,362. Oddly, the chassis number indicates that the car started life as a Coupe before it was at some point converted into a Roadster, but that didn’t seem to dampen the lively bidding. The car also featured Coopercraft brakes, adjustable rear shock absorbers, a stainless exhaust and had a triple Weber carburettor conversion. 70 www.cprmag.co.uk

Another car that generated great interest was a 1952 Bentley MkVI Donington Special by Johnard. The car was one of just 16 examples built and was fitted with a powerful R Type 4566cc engine which had just had a £6k rebuild. Despite the interest, the bidding just failed to reach the lower estimate of £37,000, the car eventually selling at £36,750. A well-prepared 1956 Triumph TR3 Rally Car with a seemingly endless spec list also failed to reach its lower estimate but still sold for £26,985, while a tidy 1958 Triumph TR3A that hadn’t been messed about with exceeded its highest estimate and went for £23,415. Make of that what you will. A ‘barn find’ 1936 MG PB was offered more or less as found complete with several decades worth of dirt and dust, although at some point its engine had been removed with a view to restoration. The car still had its original registration mark of DGP348 and it came with a current V5c document. It was estimated to sell

for between £8,000 and £14,000 but exceeded those prices and sold for £16,275. Those with an eye for a bargain didn’t go home disappointed as a number of solid cars represented excellent value for money. Among these was a 1978 MG Midget 1500 which still had a current MOT, selling for just £1,375. That is less than £2k for open-top classic motoring in a pretty little two-seater sportscar which is ready to drive away - amazing! Another sale that gave the new owner a lot of car for his money

was that of a 1984 Porsche 944 in Guards Red which appeared to be in good condition, was taxed and MOT’d and sold for just £1,575. A great price for a car with good handling qualities and plenty of pace, wouldn’t it make a brilliant track day car? Overall the day resulted a mix of high and low prices which seemed to satisfy everyone at the sale, from those looking for a bargain to the serious collectors chasing the high end stuff. RM Auctions continued its strong track record in Texas on April 27, with the record-breaking sale of the Don Davis Collection in Fort Worth, Texas. Held onsite at Mr Davis’ estate, the singleday auction of the esteemed collector’s collection saw 64 desirable cars sell for more than $21.2 million before a packed house. The exceptional quality of the collection was reflected in the strong global interest in the sale, with bidders hailing from 14 countries around the world, including from as far away as Brazil, Australia, and Kuwait. In fact, the sporty ‘wedge’ was perhaps one of the most controversial designs to ever emerge from any British car factory, as nearly every feature of the new car enraged the traditionalist sportscar fans. As the successor to the phenomenally successful TR6, the last thing the British public expected was a monocoque bodyshell, a fixed tin roof and that ‘love it or loathe it’ wedge styling. The TR7 should have flopped and been consigned to the automotive history books, but then something strange happened. Instead of selling to the traditional Triumph market, the car found favour with a whole new set of owners; ones who loved the futuristic styling and ‘pop-up’ headlights, who liked the idea of not having to live with a leaky roof, and appreciated the cheaper running costs associated with the smaller engine. Amazingly, Triumph’s most controversial TR would go on to become its best selling sportscar ever. To mark the TR7s success, the chaps at British Motor Heritage have had a trawl through the British Leyland film archives and put together this fascinating DVD containing footage of Triumph’s ‘wedge.’ ‘Triumph TR7 - A Touch Of The Devil’ is made up from a compilation of re-mastered films which show the TR7 in action. The first one, and the one from which the DVD takes its title, is an amusing promo film aimed squarely at the allimportant US market, where the plot centres on a New York salesman who is magically transported to the BL’s Speke factory in Liverpool. There is some fairly unique film lurking among the promotional spin, and if you are a fan of the TR7, then you’ll just love it. The other three films on this DVD look at the

TR7’s rallying credentials, with ‘Buffam & Co’ following husband and wife team John and Vicki Buffam as the go rallying in the USA, and ‘Tour de Corse’ features rally driver Brian Culcheth and two TR7s romping through the dramatic Corsican landscape. Finally, ‘Triumph – A Sporting Success’ shows the TR7 V8 taking part in the Ypres, Manx and Mintex rallies during 1978-9. Among the drivers featured are Tony Pond and Murray Walker. Overall it is a very watchable DVD. It has been well put together and will greatly appeal to Triumph fans, and if you own a TR7, you’ve just got to have this in your collection!

Speedy Stories & Revving Reads! BRM V16 in Camera Author: Anthony Pritchard Price: £60.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857332356 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk The BRM V16 looks every inch like the perfect vintage racing car, but looks can be deceptive. This attractive single seater has had much said about it over the years, but perhaps the most defining (and damning) words came from Sir Stirling Moss who described it as “without doubt the worst car I ever drove.” He wasn’t alone either; Mike Hawthorn was asked to drive the car in 1953, but after driving it complained: “It was no use, every time I came to a corner and went below the 8,000rpm mark, the power went right off. Then, suddenly, as you reached the 8,000 mark the full power would come in and you had a job to hold the car straight. At 8,000rpm it really did motor, but the steering was nothing to write home about.” Interestingly, this book does little to counter these claims, but instead looks at how the car was designed, built and raced during its short competitive career. It also closely describes the key personalities associated with the car, along with some of the ‘wheeling and dealing’ that went on back in the immediate post-war period. However, it is the photographs that make this book special, and not just because of the car. Many of the pictures were taken at the races that the BRM competed in between 1950 and 1955, and some of the early colour shots are quite simply magical. A great part of their appeal in not the car, which admittedly does look wonderful, but the backgrounds, which show racing scenes from the 1950s reproduced in breathtaking, pin-sharp colour. This is down to the original photographers, who captured the vibrant scenes in the first place, and to the book’s graphic designer who has worked wonders in bringing these images back to life. There are black and white photos too, which capture the atmosphere of the period well, but they don’t have the same impact as the colour shots. The author has also done a wonderful job of describing the personalities of key BRM team members such as Raymond Mays & Peter Berthon, and he goes some way to lifting the lid on exactly what went on behind the closed doors of the BRM factory. It’s fascinating stuff, and the book as a whole is well thought out and nicely presented. As an all-round package on a historic racing car, you will struggle to find one that is better than this, and while it delivers all the facts and figures as you’d expect, it also gives a great insight into BRM.
