Editorial Well, it’s certainly been another busy month here in Classic, Performance & Retro land. The undoubted highlight for us was getting invited to go along to a very special track day at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool. It was here that the Sporting Bears Motor Club staged a very worthy and inspirational ‘track day’ that brightened up the lives of some very special children. To see the work being done by the club first hand was extremely moving, yet at the same time it really brought home to me just how many genuinely nice people there are in the world of classic and performance cars. These guys gave up their free time, their cars and even paid for their own expenses so that disadvantaged kids could have a day to really remember. It was an amazing gesture and you can read all about it in our feature in this issue. There has also been some very unseasonable weather over the last few weeks too, with temperatures here in the UK hitting record levels for the month of October. Of course this meant a few extra days when we could get out in our cars, get the tops down, and really enjoy being out on the roads. Not so great if you don’t own a convertible or don’t have air-conditioning, but still better than driving in the rain! As usual, we hope you enjoy reading this issue of Classic, Performance & Retro magazine. We always love to hear your thoughts and ideas, so please feel free to get in touch and let us know what you think or what you would like to see in the magazine.

Ferrari 458 Spider Launched At Frankfurt Ferrari’s new 458 Spider has finally been unveiled to the public at the 64th Frankfurt International Motor Show. The latest addition to the Ferrari range is a mid-rear-engined twoseater featuring a fully retractable aluminium hard-top, which Ferrari says is a world first for a sports car with this layout. The 458 Spider’s new hard-top is not only 25 kg lighter than a traditional folding soft-top, but is also quieter too. Aside from taking just 14 seconds to open or close, the hard-top was engineered to occupy a very small space when stored so that the designers were able to include a rear bench for luggage behind the two seats. The rear windscreen doubles as an effective wind-stop which is electrically adjustable. When the hard-top is folded away the wind-stop opens to the height that guarantees the most efficient aerodynamics, reducing buffeting in the cockpit. The 458 Spider is powered by Ferrari’s 570 CV 4,499cc V8 which was named International Engine of the Year 2011. This is coupled with Ferrari’s dual-clutch F1 paddle-shift transmission which delivers 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in under 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 320 km/h. The all-aluminium chassis incorporates new alloys and castings, also adopted on the coupé, which ensure the 458 Spider already conforms to 2020 safety legislation.

New Jensen Interceptor Planned For 2012 An all-new Jensen Interceptor will be launched next year, after CPP Global Holdings was appointed to engineer, develop and build the new car by the brands’ owners, Healey Sports Cars Switzerland Ltd (HSCS). CPP, the British specialist automotive group, will finalise the new car’s development in Coventry and manufacture it at a new production facility on Browns Lane from 2014. A team of Coventry-based design consultants employed by HSCS has completed the design of the new Interceptor, which has already gained significant customer interest. The new Jensen Interceptor – echoing the four-seat grand tourer layout of the much-loved original built between 1966 and 1976 – is based on an all-new aluminium chassis and handcrafted aluminium body. The public unveiling of the Interceptor is planned for late 2012, with deliveries to customers beginning in 2014. Annual production numbers and pricing are yet to be confirmed, but CPP says they will be fixed to ensure ‘ultra-exclusivity.’ Brendan O’Toole, founder and co-owner of CPP, said: “I started my career by restoring bodies and components for classic British sports cars, so for CPP to take the lead role in reviving this iconic brand is very exciting for the business, and for me personally. The Jensen design team has respected and honoured the great heritage and attributes of the original Interceptor, while injecting a contemporary edge and advanced technologies that will ensure it appeals to the passionate, discerning motoring enthusiast of today. “This work is at an advanced stage, and married to CPP’s expert coachbuilding, craftsmanship and engineering skills, the new Interceptor will be an exceptional example of British automotive excellence,” he said. Liam Cardiff, director of Healey Sports Cars Switzerland, said: “CPP is the perfect partner to revive the iconic Jensen Interceptor. With the Jensen design team integrated into an organisation with much greater resources and broader expertise, our dream of seeing the Jensen and Interceptor badges once again adorning the bonnets of beautiful, modern, British-built GT cars has come closer to reality.” HSCS owns all assets, intellectual property, designs, and brand rights for the Jensen and Interceptor brands. Surf’s Up At Coventry! Coventry Transport Museum may be situated as far from the coast as it’s possible to be in the UK, but from October 20, 2011, to March 18, 2012, the museum will bring the sights, the sounds and swell of the sea to the Midlands, for its latest major exhibition Wheels & Waves. The display will show off vehicles used by British surfers from the 1950s to the present day, along with a display of surf art, boards and memorabilia from the Museum of British Surfing. The Museum has brought together an eclectic range of vehicles for this exhibition, and all have one thing in common – they have all belonged to surfers; and at some point someone has strapped a surf board to them and driven to the British seaside to catch some waves. Visitors will of course know about VW campers and maybe even Beetles being used as surfer transportation, but the Museum also has a few surprises in store! The vehicles will be displayed on specially built ‘seaside’ sets – after entering the exhibition through the surf shack visitors will be met with sand dunes, surf boards and of course the stars of the show, a tremendous range of surf vehicles including a 1968 Split-Screen Dodge Camper, a range of VW Campers and Beetles and some iconic ‘woodie’ cars. The display of vehicles will be complemented by an array of surf art, surfboards and memorabilia from British surfers past and present, including original British surfboards dating back almost a century. These items will be on loan from the Museum of British Surfing, to really bring this intriguing world to life.

Teewave AR1 Electric Sports Car Revealed Gordon Murray Design Limited and Toray Industries Inc have revealed a brand new prototype electric sports car named Teewave AR.1. The car is the result of a commission from Toray for Gordon Murray Design to design, tool and build a fully functioning prototype vehicle. The entire programme from concept discussions to a running vehicle took just nine months and was delivered on target, both in terms of cost and final handover. The power train fitted to the car has apparently been used in another commercial electric vehicle, but the “unique electrical architecture and control units” were developed by Gordon Murray Design. The AR.1 has a remarkably low weight of just 850kg (including the 240kg battery) putting the car firmly in Lotus Elise territory and some 400kg lighter than a Tesla. The ultimate performance is limited by an output figure of 47kw but a torque of 180 Nm available from a standing start results in lively acceleration. A great deal of attention has been given to the low weight, low centre of gravity and suspension geometry which the maker says has resulted in excellent ride and handling balance. Speaking about the new car, Gordon Murray said: “It has been a pleasure to work with Toray Industries’ team on this challenging project. The resultant vehicle weight of just 850Kg achieved using Toray’s carbon fibre once again proves that performance through light weight is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to achieve power to weight targets.”

Radical SR3 SL Launched At Frankfurt Show Radical Sportscars launched its SR3 SL road car during its first-ever attendance at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Radical presented the SL in its production-ready form at Europe’s largest motor expo, with two demo cars on the stand, in contrasting pearlescent white and metallic black liveries. The Peterborough-based company has already gained a dozen orders for the new car and is confident of taking orders for another 40, over double the company’s original forecast for 2011/12. Nick Dove, Radical’s Commercial Director, said: “This is only Radical’s second international motorshow after attending the Shanghai International Motor Show in 2009, and the reaction to the SL from the world’s media has been unanimously positive. This is the right time and the right place to launch Radical’s first road-focused car, and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both the SR range, and Radical as a global brand.”

Aston Martin Wins At ALMS Laguna Seca

Aston Martin won the annual Laguna Seca American Le Mans Series Race on September 17. Under sunny skies, in a race dominated by yellow flags, the team ran faultlessly for six hours to take the top spot on the podium. Drivers Adrian Fernandez (MEX), Stefan Mücke (D) and Harold Primat (CH) drove the Aston Martin DBR1-2 consistently in the top three, and in the final hour remained dominant in first position. In qualifying the day before, Fernandez put in a 1:14.621 lap in the factory entered Lowes-sponsored DBR1-2, which successfully gained the team third on the grid for the race. Mücke started the race and within five laps he’d moved up to second position after a smart overtaking manoeuvre. By the seventh lap he was leading the race and making good progress. The remaining five hours, the blue and orange Gulf Oil liveried DBR1-2 stayed in the top three throughout.

Isle Of Man Not To Be Replaced In 2011 BHRC Following the news that the 2011 Rally Isle of Man has been cancelled, organisers of the Dunlop/WONAGO MSA British Historic Rally Championship have confirmed that the event will not be replaced in the 2011 schedule and that this year’s championship will now be held over seven events. The Rally Isle of Man, scheduled for 28/29 October, was to have been the final round of the championship, but that honour will now fall to the Colin McRae Stages on Saturday 1 October. In line with the championship regulations, scores will now be counted from competitors’ best five results from the seven rounds. “We are very, very sorry to learn of cancellation of the Rally Isle of Man,” said BHRC manager Simon Marks. “The event has provided very well for us in recent years but the advent of much tighter times financially, plus the move to the October date, appear to have been two large steps too far for us all this year.” The schedule for the 2012 BHRC will be announced within the next week.

Stouf Plots Roger Albert Clark Rally defence Belgians Stefaan Stouf and Joris Erard have unveiled plans to defend their 2010 victory when this year’s Roger Albert Clark Rally starts in Yorkshire on Friday 2 December. Traditionally, Stouf has used his Ford Escort Mk1 on British gravel rallies and has kept his Ford Escort Mk2 for asphalt events in Belgium. However, the move to encourage FIA specification cars into the Roger Albert Clark Rally helped persuade Stouf to enter the more powerful Mk2 for the challenging 2-5 December event. “We are doing the Trackrod Rally this weekend as a shakedown on gravel for the Mk2 and it is also good practice on the Yorkshire stages for the RAC,” said Stouf, who famously won the 2010 Roger Albert Clark Rally when deep snow and ice hit the four-day event. “We have not driven the Mk2 on gravel before, but we hope that we have now got it reliable,” he added, after recently finishing third overall on the Tour of Flanders.

Alesi Returns To Competitive Racing In 2012 Indy 500 Jean Alesi will make his return to competitive racing at next year’s Indy 500 in the USA. Despite his considerable experience, Jean has never before taken on competitive oval racing. Following a 12 year stint in F1 from 1989 to 2001, Alesi moved onto DTM racing and then last year made his most recent competitive race appearance in the Le Mans Series. In January 2011 he joined Group Lotus as a brand ambassador and development consultant on the F1 customer race car, the T125. Although never straying far from the race track, the Indy 500 and oval racing represent completely new challenges for Jean. Commenting on the announcement Jean Alesi said: “I’m thrilled that Lotus has given me the opportunity to compete in such a world famous race. I’m very focused on the task I’m facing – I’m taking my training very seriously, I have some amazing support on this front from a ‘comeback’ expert and of course I will be testing extensively. I’m really excited about the race.”

Stafford Kit Car Show

Showery weather meant that attendance was down at this year’s Stafford Kit Car Show, but there was still some stunning cars on display . Simon Hazeldine went along to see what was on offer.

J

ust what exactly is a kit car? That’s a question I asked myself when I visited the Stafford Kit Car Show on September 17/18 at the Bingley Hall in the sprawling Staffordshire County

18 CPR Magazine

Showground. To some people, they represent the most complete form of motoring enjoyment. The ‘build it, drive it’ ethos is one is one that should be familiar to many car enthusiasts, and if you’re

reading this, then chances are that you probably carry out your own maintenance, or maybe you even restored your car. That being the case, the idea of ‘building’ your own car should be easy to understand.

For many kit builders the enjoyment comes from the actual building of the car, with the end product being less important. Some owners finish building the kit, drive the car for a few months, and then sell the finished car so they can start another kit.

Dedicated Mechanics There is a similar movement in the world of aviation. The Light Aircraft Association here in the UK exists primarily to support pilots who are building their own aircraft. Many of these aeroplanes come in kit form just like the cars. Some people however, prefer to work just from a set of plans and build their plane from scratch using wood and fibre-glass.

Beautiful detailing in this Cobra replica. Just like the cars, many of the kit planes are sold once complete so the owner can embark upon another project. I guess what we are dealing with here is a group of people best described as ‘dedicated

mechanics.’ In other words, guys who get immense enjoyment from creating cars… or even planes! So why do we cover kit cars in Classic, Performance & Retro? Well, take a look

and insane top speeds, so that alone allows many of these kits to sit nicely in the ‘performance’ category.

Different Format The show at Stafford took on a format that I have not come across before. Entry

to the showground itself was free, which meant that it cost you nothing if you wanted to wander around the outdoor displays put on by some of the attending car clubs. That in itself was pretty good value since there was a great selection of cars on display

A Haldane Healey replica parked in the showground. on the grass outside the main hall. Everything from replica classics like the Sebring Austin Healey and Challenger E-Type to numerous Lotus Seven copies and Cobras, there was certainly plenty to see. If you wanted to go into the main hall where all the trade stands were located, then you had to pay an entry fee of £10.00. The kit car industry is a fairly small part of the motoring world, so this show isn’t as big as some of the huge classic car shows held around the country. Never the less, there was still a lot of very appealing cars inside the hall, ranging from replicas to extreme track machines.

Challenger E-Type looks stunning!

Of course, the truth is that this car can be built for around £30,000, which is a fraction of the price of a real Ferrari, but we won’t tell the neighbours that, will we.

Even the door mirrors are exactly the same as on the real Ferrari. Italian Replica Club which had a mouth-watering selection of Ferrari looky-likeys on display. The DNA 4Thirty is designed to look like the Ferrari F430, but like a lot of these Ferrari kits, it is in fact built using a Toyota MR2

Another manufacturer that was attracting a lot of attention was Mills Extreme vehicles Ltd, or MEV for short. I kept hearing people talk about the MEV Rocket, so I had to check it out. The Rocket turns out to be a car that resembles the Aerial Atom; it’s formed around a triangulated space frame chassis and uses a Ford Focus 1.8 as the main donor

vehicle. According to MEV, the 1.8 Focus engine, even in standard spec, will propel the Rocket from 0-60mph in under five seconds, so Rocket by name, Rocket by nature! Being Focus based means there is an almost endless list of upgrades and mods that can be made to the car and it would almost certainly be an excellent track day machine. However, as a practical everyday runabout, think more along the lines of motorbike!

lightning on ice One car that really caught my eye was the beautiful Murtaya Roadster R. This small twoseater sportscar uses a Subaru Impreza as a donor car, and as anyone with any motoring knowledge knows, the ‘Scooby’ is a pretty quick car. Now imagine the Subaru’s engine and mechanical parts transplanted into a car that is just over half its weight and you begin to get the picture! The Murtaya has a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds and punches out 341bhp at 6,200rpm from its turbocharged 2.5litre engine. Its weight of just 923kg compared to the Impreza’s 1,405kg means this car is like lightning on ice!

this year the cars were sent on their way by non other than Stirling Moss. The 2012 run will start from the famous Brooklands racing circuit in Surrey and finish up on Madeira Drive in Brighton. I was surprised at just how little it costs to enter a car on

kit for kids One of the problems with attending car shows, at least if you have young children, is that they always expect you to bring something back for them. Usually a sticker, pen or similar freebie will just about do the job, but if you happened to be feeling particularly generous while at Stafford, you could always have bought junior his own kit to build. “It’s the Future”

Professional racing teams incorporate a vast array of modern technology into their cars, but now that same technology is also being used to train drivers, as Simon Hazeldine discovered when he dropped in to try out the stunning Base Performance racing simulator.

I

f you are a regular reader of Classic, Performance & Retro, you may recall that we tagged along with the drivers from the Robertson Racing Team when they visited the Base Performance simulator to help them prepare 30 CPR Magazine

for the gruelling Le Mans 24 Hour Race. At the time we were concentrating on the team, but we couldn’t help but be impressed with the simulator and the benefits it can bring to competitive drivers, so when Base

Performance owner Darren Turner invited us back to look at the simulator in more detail, we jumped at the chance. Darren has been involved with motorsport since his early teens and is currently a works driver with Aston Martin

Racing, but his foray into the simulation world is a fairly recent thing. “Base Performance has been running for about two years now, although we only moved into these premises here in Banbury 18 months ago,” said Darren. “I first got involved with racing simulators back in 1998 when I was a junior test driver with the McLaren F1 team. They started their

simulator programme which I became involved with and then I moved on to the Red Bull and Toyota F1 teams where I worked on their simulators too. That experience helped me see the cutting edge of what race simulators can be and it has also helped me produce what we have here at Base Performance. Having that experience at the top end gave me an insight to what

works very well, what is cost effective and what is important to younger drivers as they start using simulators as part of their training.”

Lapping Le Mans My last experience of the simulator saw me lapping the famous Le Mans circuit in 5.04, which was about 30 seconds slower than the Robertson drivers were doing it in. My October 2011 31

Behind these doors, racing drivers are made! also interested to see how Alex would get on with the sim since he has never driven anything with gears, but he has spent hours lapping Silverstone in F1 cars on his X-Box.

silverstone circuit

Walk this way... first impression was just how fast things move on the sim and that it certainly wasn’t as easy as it looks. I have in the past been fortunate enough to play with some fairly advanced flight simulation equipment and I found that to be a lot easier than the car sim. Although most aeroplanes travel at higher speeds than cars, the immediate environment around you 32 CPR Magazine

changes very little, apart from the take-off and landing stages. With the car simulator, your surroundings change by the second, so it’s a far more intense experience. On my last visit, I told Darren about my son Alex who has been into Karting for about a year now, and he suggested that I bring him along to have a go on the simulator to see what he thought of it. I was

The simulator was set up for the Silverstone National Circuit while the virtual car we would be driving was a Ginetta G40. The simulator itself is actually based on the chassis of a single-seater which is positioned in front of a large 180° wrap-around screen. Inside the cockpit there is just a seat, a steering wheel and the pedals. The steering wheel is similar to those found in modern F1 cars, though not quite as complex. However, it has enough lights and buttons on it to make it seem rather daunting if you’re not used to that sort of thing. On the back of the wheel are two paddles

which change the gears up and down. The seating position is comfortable and a button on the cockpit wall allows you to electrically adjust the pedals so they are easy to reach. The first thing to hit me as I pulled away out of the pit lane was just how realistic the controls feel. The pedals are stiffer than I expect and the steering seems heavy at low speeds; in other words it replicates a real car perfectly. As I touch the red and white kerb on the apex of the first corner, I can feel the vibration through the steering wheel and I actually find myself leaning slightly into each turn. The level of immersion is impressive, and were it not for Darren standing behind talking me around the circuit, I could easily have forgotten where I was and convinced myself that I was in a real car.

Darren Turner (left) runs Base Performance.

brace for impact! I like the way the simulator plays with my subconscious, the way the scenery seems to flash by and disappear from my peripheral vision, and I find myself so immersed in the drive that when I lose it and head towards a tyre wall at 100mph, I tense up and brace myself for the impact. Thankfully, there was no pain… virtual or otherwise, but that is the beauty of this simulator. You can take your race car to a circuit and practice as much as you like, but you are putting wear on the mechanical parts, burning fuel, using tyres and if you lose it at speed, you could end up with a massive bill to fix the damage. You don’t get any of that with the sim; you can do as many laps as you like to learn a particular circuit

As real as it gets without burning gas! and if you crash, you just press the reset button! I climb out of the simulator and Alex gets in. Darren tells me the Alex is the youngest and smallest ‘driver’ to ever use the sim so it should be an interesting experience. A few extra seat cushions are required to move Alex forward so he can reach the pedals, and once adjusted he sets off. I watch from the control room behind the simulator where Michael Japp monitors the telemetry readouts during each session. It is interesting to see that Alex has little

trouble adjusting to the gears, and as Darren stands behind him talking him through the corners, I keep hearing him say the word “perfect.” This could be embarrassing! Luckily for me, Alex’s session comes to an end just as he comes within a tenth of a second of my best time.

Closet Geek? I asked Darren how he got into working with simulators; was he a closet computer geek? “No, not at all. I was just a driver at McLaren and they needed a driver to help October 2011 33

develop

it; someone who would know what was right and what was wrong. I’m just a race driver and I guess I was just in the right place at the right time when the simulator boom started.” I was keen to find out what sort of people use the Base Performance simulator. Were they all professional racing drivers or perhaps affluent people who wanted that ultimate ‘X-box experience’? 34 CPR Magazine

“It’s a mix of people really,” said Darren. “They are either young drivers who are on their way to the single-seater path aiming for Formula1, but we also get drivers from Formula Renault, Formula3, GP3 and GP2 and these are our core singleseater customers. Then we have another side of the business made up from GT drivers, some professional and others are drivers who want some extra testing or circuit familiarisation. We also do corporate events where companies send their staff along for a day out. Obviously their skill levels are very mixed; some have done

track days while others are complete novices and we try to teach them how to get the car around the track as quickly as possible.”

Training Aid It is interesting to hear that the simulator is used by such a varied group of people. Obviously its main use is as a training aid, but it is very different from the ones used by the Formula1 teams. Those simulators are used to test engineering aspects such as how new bodywork will affect the car, or which is the best set-up to use for a particular circuit. So what is the Base Performance simulator most commonly used for? “Again, it’s a bit of a mix. We

might have 16-year-olds doing their first year in Formula Renault or similar class, and for them it’s used to learn the circuits. We have international drivers who also use it to learn the circuits, but some use it to work on their technique. Some bring their driving coaches and race engineers along with them and use it like a full-on test day. The thing with racing is that between each race, the driver might have to wait a number of weeks before he gets back in the car again. A footballer can go outside and kick a ball around to keep fit and stay sharp, but a racing driver can’t do that. Sure, you can eat the right things, try and keep fit and even use sports psychology to keep your mind in the right place, but without access to a car and track there is only so much you can do. 36 CPR Magazine

The sim uses Motec telemetry which is monitored in the control room.

The simulator changes that and can allow a driver to work on his technique, learn the tracks and to a certain degree stay current.”

Choose Your Car One great feature of the simulator is that even though

the chassis you sit in is a single seater, it can be set up to handle like just about any car you can mention. “The virtual car model can be anything from a Grand Prix car to a Morris Minor,” said Darren. “We can actually build a specific car model for any

The F1 style steering wheel feels surprisingly realistic. individual race team and the accuracy of the car model is determined by the amount of time we can spend with the race team that we are working with. For instance, if someone turns up and just wants to learn a circuit, it doesn’t really matter what the car model is like, as long as it is similar to the pace of whatever they drive. If they are going to be a regular customer then they will want something more accurate, so we try and replicate the way the car changes gear, the physical lap times, braking efficiency and so on.”

but what about the circuits? Is it just the British tracks that are represented? “Most of the international circuits and most of the national circuits in each country are available. We

have also had some circuits built from scratch at the customer’s request. Some of these are built purely for testing or training purposes. For example, the team might want a track where they can

work on braking technique, so they ask for a circuit that consists of two straights and two hairpins. We can build a track full of chicanes if that’s what they want to practice, so they get to do the same thing over and over again. On a normal track they might just have one chicane and then have to drive another lap before they get to practice it again.” I asked Darren how long a typical session runs for and he said that usually evening sessions last for three hours, full morning or afternoon sessions are four hours or a driver can book a whole day. “Basically we hire out the simulator along with Michael to run it. We can also supply driver coaches for an extra cost or the drivers can bring their own along with them and we are more than happy for them to do that.” So does Darren do any driver training himself? “I do occasionally, but usually I am busy with my race programme and quite often I am not even here. The 38 CPR Magazine

business has to be able to run without me, but I guess if it wasn’t racing then I would probably do a lot more.”

global business Base Performance also sells simulators and installs them for racing teams around the world. During my visit, Darren showed me a simulator which was about to be shipped out to Japan for a customer. The company has also supplied equipment to teams in the UK, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, so it’s a truly international business. I have seen other simulators that use similar single-seater chassis’ as the basis of the sim, but usually they just have a single, small flat screen mounted on the nose of the chassis. The full-sized screen certainly adds an extra dimension of realism, but is it difficult to set up? “We use three projectors to get the image and we have a very nice piece of software that warps the image around the curve and merges the October 2011 39

Darren talks through a session with a driver.

The to find out if Darren had any software is constantly being plans in the pipeline to make it an even better experience. updated to improve the image so it is getting better and better “We are working on a motion all the time” simulator at the moment but it’s still in the early stages. We adding motion have had the engineer guy in and had some parts drawn It certainly seems to be a hit up, but we’re not going to go with the drivers, and I was for a six-axis machine like certainly very impressed with 40 CPR Magazine

the F1 teams use. For what we are trying to achieve here we just need pitch, roll and heave to give some road noise and kerb strikes. If we can add that in a realistic manner that feels right, then we have achieved it. If we add it and it becomes detrimental to the driving experience because it’s a miscue, then we won’t be using it. Other than that, the only other plans we have are to hopefully move to a bigger unit so we can get two motion sims running side by side along with a smaller static one that could be self operated. Obviously the full simulator needs an operator to run it, but a self-operated sim would be cheaper for the driver and help those with smaller budgets to make use of the technology.”

why use it? I finished of by asking Darren to sum up in one sentence why drivers should make use

The helmet looks cool, but it allows two-way communication between driver and control desk.

of a simulator. “Any serious driver or team that doesn’t make use of a simulator will always be playing catch up with those that do. All the people who are leading the championships use simulators to give them that extra element over the competition and in motorsport that can be the difference between winning and losing. If you use a simulator, you’re going to give yourself a better chance of winning, and that is ultimately what every driver wants.” That’s great Darren, but it was more than one sentence! “Er…okay, one sentence, how about: it’s the future!” That works for me. ‘It’s the future’ really sums up what sort of impact a simulator can have on the future of motorsport. When you think about it, many teams use computer technology in engineering, telemetry and designing the cars, so it would

be crazy not to use it to help driver training too. Airlines have been using simulators to train their pilots for many years now, so why not drivers? I came away from Base Performance feeling impressed with what I had seen and with the professionalism with which the business is run. The sim sessions might not be cheap, but then this is a professional

tool for drivers to train with and not some glorified X-Box. We will be running a feature about Darren’s racing career in a coming issue, and it’s one not to be missed, especially if you want to know how to become a racing driver, but in the meantime just remember Darren’s words; if anyone asks you why drivers should use simulators, just tell them…’it’s the future!’ October 2011 41

Bentley

Mulsanne It might be the size of a small apartment block, but the Bentley Mulsanne has a surprising amount of performance in its locker, and as David Harrison explains, it could even embarrass the odd supercar or two!

Bentley might not have the foul smelling elevators or graffiti encrusted walls that seem to plague such communal dwellings, there’s no denying that it’s big.

You see, the problem with big cars is that they usually have the same performance as a London bus and handle like a supertanker, so the only thing most have going

for them is the lavish luxury that can be found inside. The big Bentley is never going to beat a Ferrari or similar sportscar in a race, but even so it has some pretty impressive performance figures for a car that weighs over 2.5 tons.

Under the bonnet sits a 6.75 litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine which pumps out a whopping 505bhp and generates a massive 1020Nm of torque. The engine also has some clever tricks up its sleeve. It uses two new electromechanical control systems;

cam phasing and variable displacement and when used in combination they allow the Mulsanne’s engine management system not only to actively adjust the V8’s breathing, but to effectively throttle back four of the cylinders entirely, independently of the others, October 2011 47

when not required. The manufacturer says that this helps the engine to operate in an economical manner when ‘more relaxed motoring is the order of the day.’

Irony There is a certain amount of irony there; if you can afford one of these cars, surely its rate of fuel consumption is going to be the least of your concerns! Still, fuel economy seem to be ‘buzz words’ of the modern automotive world, so a fuel efficient Bentley it is. Some say the exterior styling

This is as extravagant as the car itself as it powers no less than 20 individual speakers at 2,200 watts. The V8 powered TVR Chimaera was designed as a ‘sports tourer’ but as Simon Hazeldine found out, this sporty two-seater actually offers lots more, and for only £11K...it’s a steal!

T

he Lancashire seaside resort of Blackpool is famous for many things; its colourful illuminations; trams; donkey rides and rollercoasters to name just a few, but from 1956 until 2006, the town was also home to one of Britain’s most successful lowvolume sportscar manufacturers – TVR. During the company’s 50 year history it became known for producing stylish two-seaters, which by and large stuck to the same basic format – a steel chassis, a fibre-glass body and a V8 engine up front to supply the power. In 1992 it launched the oddly named Chimaera, which took its name from a bizarre looking creature in Greek mythology. Thankfully, the car looked a lot better than its namesake, which took the form of a lion with the head of a goat on its back and a snake for its tail. The TVR Chimaera on the other hand looks fantastic, with flowing lines that hint of great performance and high speed, yet somehow it looks unfussy and almost minimalist…or at least on the outside it does. It October 2011 59

This set-up makes the Chimaera an appealing proposition as it gives the car an unburstable feel and spares are easy to obtain too. It also sounds great, but more on that later.

Remarkable Value

has an almost timeless look about it; only the dowdy circular headlights give any real clue as to what era it comes from, but look at the car from just about any other angle and it could have rolled off a production line yesterday. The Chimaera was offered 60 CPR Magazine

with a variety of different engine sizes, ranging from the entry level 4.0 litre to a 4.3, 4.5 or 5.0 litre units. All the engines on offer were derivatives of the tried and tested Rover V8 which TVR first used on its 350i model back in 1983. The gearbox

The car that we used for our road test is a 1999 4.0 litre model with 67,000 on the clock and is (at the time of writing) being offered for sale by Sebring International in Cambridgeshire for ÂŁ10,995. Although the 4.0 litre model is often shunned in favour of Chimaeras with the bigger engines, I was keen to find out exactly what you get for your

money, since a V8 powered sportscar of this pedigree seems to be remarkable value at that price.

Educated For those not educated in the ways of the Chimaera, the first problem is getting into the car as there are no door handles! To open the door you press a discrete button on the bottom of the door mirror and the door obligingly swings open. Climbing in presents no problems and the leather seats seem to wrap themselves around me as I adjust to the low driving position. There is plenty of leg room too; I had to move the seat forward to reach the pedals comfortably and I’m 5’11” so the TVR is a great car for taller drivers. It’s not just the seats that seem to wrap themselves around you; the interior of the Chimarea seems to be full of padded cushions and panels, and the curved dash sweeps across the car to meet the centre console which sits high between the two seats. Large bulbous padded arm rests flack the centre console giving the driver extra support but can feel slightly intrusive when changing gear. The short, stubby gearstick itself sits on top of the centre console just in front of the dashboard and is easy to reach when driving, although might be a little too high up for some people.

chunky knurled aluminium heater controls have a solid, unbreakable feel about them. The gauges and controls are wrapped with polished walnut veneer panels which sit deep in the leather-padded fascia. The central air-vents are

almost hidden from view below the dashboard, and in practical terms aren’t that effective, but this is a convertible, so some would say who needs them anyway. Having said that, the heating system pumps out plenty of hot air. Even with the

The austere black steering wheel isn’t particularly attractive and looks like it was pulled out of a 1980s kit car. Behind it sit the black plastic 62 CPR Magazine

indicator and windscreen wiper stalks which look rather out of place in the classy leather and walnut trimmed interior. It’s a bit like going for lunch at the Ritz only to find it served on paper plates with plastic knives and forks. The electric window buttons

The only real oddity inside the car is what appears to be a large aluminium ‘door knob’ set into the centre console between the seats. In fact, that is exactly what it is – it’s a door knob! You twist the knob towards the door you want to release and with a clunk it pops open. Gimmick? Maybe, but it’s pretty neat all the same. Once settled into the car, I turn the key and the engine fires up. The sound from the growling V8 bounces off a nearby wall and it’s one of those sounds

Twin exhausts amplify that superb V8 rumble. that you never tire of hearing. A squeeze of the throttle and the noise level goes up a few decibels as the car rocks gently from the increase in torque. It feels every inch a sportscar…and we haven’t even started moving yet! I drop the clutch and select first gear and find that the pedals seem light, but the short gearstick makes the box seem a little stiff. A little throttle and we’re accelerating up one of the many straight fen roads that occupy this part of Cambridgeshire. The centre section of the roof has been removed and the more I squeeze the throttle, the more I can hear that superb exhaust noise – the faster you go, the better it sounds, but don’t try using that as an excuse in

court! Being ‘only’ the 4.0 litre version of the Chimaera, I wasn’t sure if the performance would be that impressive, however on that front I was pleasantly surprised. The car pulls like a train and I glided effortlessly past any slower

traffic that got in my way. From a standing start, the car doesn’t disappoint. It will do that statute 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, and the only thing that could prevent that is the slightly stiff gear change. You also run out of first gear very quickly, so you need to make

firm, fast gear changes if you want to maximise the car’s speed potential.

Traditional magnolia faced gauges.

Stopping Power Of course, having lots of speed is great…as long as the brakes work! Thankfully, the Chimaera has some of the best brakes I have come across on a non-race prepared car. Even at high speed, the brakes seem to bite hard and slow the car surprisingly quickly. Not only is this reassuring, it also means that you can hurl the car at corners with a lot more confidence, and while TVR may have intended the Chimaera to be a long-distance ‘sports tourer,’ it really wouldn’t take much work to turn it into a very good trackday car.

The suspension is set up to give a firm-ish ride; enough to give the car some sporty handling while at the same time giving being comfortable enough on long journeys. It’s a good compromise and it makes the car a joy to drive.

The steering is responsive, yet has that slightly ‘aged’ feel about it. For example, the steering feels heavier than the more modern Ford Mondeo I had arrived in and not quite as sharp, but I had no problem keeping an accurate line October 2011 65

through the corners and once you get used to it, you hardly notice. In fact it probably a good trait, since the last thing you want when travelling at high speed is a light, twitchy steering wheel.

Viceless Overall, I’d have to say the car is pretty viceless on the road. The strong chassis absorbs everything you throw at it and 66 CPR Magazine

even cornering at speed, there is no hint of oversteer. The Chimaera is a driver’s car in every sense of the word. It wants to be driven fast; you have to grip the steering wheel with both hands and haul it around as you fly through the corners. You can’t make lazy, half-hearted gear changes either, you have to be firm with it if you want to get the most from the TVR.

The thing is, all the above points hint at a car that is pretty sporty and fun to drive, yet that was never the intention for the Chimaera. As mentioned earlier, the car was designed as a sports tourer, so the fact you can wang it through the corners with a silly grin on your face should be seen as something of a bonus. If you did want to use the car for touring though, the

Chimaera excels at this too. For a start, those leather seats are as comfortable as any armchair so long journeys are a breeze. The boot is massive, or at least it is when compared to other sportscars and will easily swallow a couple of suitcases and probably a few sports bags too. The only down side is that the space is considerably reduced if you stow the roof centre section

in the boot, so if you really are touring and have lots of luggage in the boot, then the roof stays on. While I’m on the subject of the roof, I have to say I was impressed with how easy it was to remove the centre panel. It is basically clamped between the top windscreen rail and the top of the fixed rear hood section. To remove the panel, you simply take 68 CPR Magazine

the tension off the two rear upright supports, pull the rear section down slightly and the panel just lifts away. No clips, fasteners or clamps and it takes less than 10 seconds to remove it.

Problem Areas As far as potential problem areas go when buying a Chimaera, they are few and far between. The engine

and gearbox are solid and the fibreglass body means you never have to worry about rust, however, the main point to look for is the state of the chassis outrigger frames. These are notorious for trapping moisture and road dirt and the tubes can rot from the top down. Sebring International can supply new outrigger sections which can be welded in to fix the problem. The company has also modified the repair section to allow for better drainage, so hopefully the problem wont come back. To have the work done professionally costs over ÂŁ1,000, so if you are looking to buy a Chimaera, check the outriggers thoroughly, or better still, find a car where they have been replaced already. Spares for the Chimaera are also readily available from a network of parts suppliers

that cater for the car. Many of the parts can also be found on other models too, so if you know where to look and what to ask for, you can probably find most items locally. For example, door mirrors (Citroen CX), indicator/wiper stalks (Vauxhall Cavalier), front and rear hubs (Ford Sierra) and the interior light (Ford Escort). Many of the parts could even be obtained cheaply from a breaker’s yard; try doing that with a Ferrari! The TVR Chimaera is an excellent all-rounder that combines great performance with a decent amount of practicality. It takes everything you throw at it in its stride and still comes back for more. Whether you want power and performance or just a highspeed tourer, the Chimaera ticks all the boxes and with good examples like the car we drove selling for just over £10,000, you certainly get a lot of car for your money.

Necessities There are track days...and then there are track days, but the Dream Rides day held recently by the Sporting Bears Motor Club at Aintree, Liverpool, must surely rank as one of the most worthwhile events of its kind, as Simon Hazeldine discovered.

76 CPR Magazine

I

t was late one Friday afternoon when the phone rang. As the CPR office was closed, and I half expected it to be another of those annoying recorded sales calls, I picked up the phone and said “Hello.” The following conversation went something like this. “Hi, is that Classic, Performance & Retro magazine?” “Er…yes it is.” “Great….this is Max Walker from the Sporting Bears Motor Club and I was wondering if you would like to join us for a day at Aintree Race Course in Liverpool, home of the Grand National?” “Hmmm…well it’s very kind

of you to offer Max, but I’m not really into horse racing; I prefer horsepower of a different kind.” Oh, don’t worry,” said Max, “there will be plenty of that there for you!” For those of you that don’t know, the Sporting Bears Motor Club is made up from a group of people spread all over the UK who use their classic and performance cars to help raise money for charity. The club’s main event of each year is the fabulous ‘Dream Rides’ venture, which it stages at the Classic Motor Show in Birmingham. This is where

a large section of the club’s membership turns up at the NEC with their cars, such as Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Jaguars and Austin Healeys, and visitors to the show can get a ‘Dream Ride’ in one of the cars in exchange for a charitable donation. It is a superb event, and last year the club raised a staggering £35,000 during the course of the three day show. Perhaps even more impressive is that over £400,000 has been raised over the 17 years that the Dream Rides scheme has been running for. Back to that phone call, and

I am getting more confused by the minute! “Okay….so it’s not horses, it’s cars…but how are you going to get a Ferrari over Becher’s Brook?” (If you don’t know your horse racing, Becher’s Brook is a notorious 7ft high steeplechase fence on Aintree Race Course). Max went on to explain that although Aintree is indeed most famous for its equine events, it was also once one of the UK’s top motor racing circuits and even staged the

in 1954 by Earl Howe and Raymond Mays, remains Britain’s only purpose-built Grand Prix circuit and it still exists in its entirety. It staged the British Grand Prix in 1955, 1957, 1959, 1961 and 1962 and veteran racing driver Stirling Moss scored his first World Championship Grand Prix victory in the 1955 race at Aintree. This also marked the first occasion on which a British driver had won his home Grand Prix. The first British driver/ British car victory in a British Grand Prix also took place at Aintree in 1957 when Moss and Tony Brooks shared a Vanwall in an event which was also honoured with the title ‘Grand Prix d’Europe.’ Aintree also staged a further eleven non-Championship Aintree ‘200’ Formula1 events.

Tom brings back another smiling passenger! My conversation with Max was starting to make sense now. So this would be an event run along the lines of the Dream Rides, where people could get rides in exotic cars in exchange for a donation? Not quite. Max explained that the Dream Rides scheme was

an excellent way of raising money, but the club wanted to do a little more for some of the children supported by the charities and give them a day they would really remember. As a result, seriously ill, recovering or disadvantaged children from about ten local charities October 2011 81

gate. “Excuse me mate… how do I get to the motor racing circuit?” It turned out that the circuit was on the opposite side of Aintree from the famous grandstands that tower over the main entrance; I would have to go back out and find my way to Melling Road, the equally famous thoroughfare that the Grand National riders cross during the big race. Despite the security guy’s over-complicated directions, I soon found it and could see a dazzling selection of cars as I headed through the gate. The ‘Bears’ were out in force, and there must have been at least 50 very desirable cars lined up near the start of the Aintree circuit. I wandered through the collection of machinery, stopping to look at an immaculate Mk1 Ford Cortina fitted with a 2.0litre Zetec engine and a variety of other non-standard fittings to improve performance.

Janet McPherson worked tirelessly making sure all the kids got a ride.

I know the way! The date was set for Sunday September 4, and another early morning start saw me heading up the M6 towards Liverpool. I know the city 82 CPR Magazine

Getting On Track well, since my father grew up there and I still regard it as something of a second home. I also knew where Aintree Race Course was, so I didn’t bother looking at Max’s carefully written directions. That was mistake No.1. I made good time and was feeling pleased with myself as I drove through the main gates of the famous race course just after 9am. It seemed very quiet so I caught the attention of the security guard on the

The plan was for all the drivers to complete a ‘sighting lap’ before the children started arriving and Max kindly invited me to come along with him for the ride. He had borrowed a car for the day…and not just any car! He had the wonderful Bentley Mulsanne (which you can read about elsewhere in this issue) which had generously been loaned for the day by the Bentley UK factory down the road in Crewe. In fact Bentley

also supplied a Continental Supersports, the fastest fourseat convertible in the world, and local car dealership Cheshire Oaks Alfa sent along an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Cloverleaf while Chester Porsche kindly lent a Porsche Panamera and a Porsche Cayman for the children to enjoy. Also sending vehicles along for the day were Merseyside Police, who sent two Police cars along and Merseyside Fire & Rescue sent one of their fire engines. A drivers’ safety briefing was held to ensure that all the cars stayed on the track. The rules were simple; keep it safe and no overtaking or racing. This wasn’t a race meeting or track day, so the idea was to have fun and

Rob’s lightning fast Porsche 964RS. make it a memorable day for the children.

Liverpool Motor Club Marshals for the day were supplied by the Liverpool Motor Club who did a fantastic job of organising the cars, and it was one of

their team who stood at the start line to wave each car off in turn with a wave of his flag. I took my very luxurious seat in the Bentley with Max at the controls and one of Liverpool’s finest fire-fighters riding in the back. As the October 2011 83

The actual circuit in use for the day is known as the Club Circuit and this uses about half of the original Grand Prix track, and there is good reason for this. The

complete circuit, like the race course, crosses Melling Road in not one, but two places, and the good people of Aintree Village probably wouldn’t appreciate high performance cars flashing across the road in front of them at 150mph! The other reason is that the recently extended grandstands near the Aintree paddock now encroach onto the track, so Raffle prizes donated by Premiership football clubs (but not Man Utd!).

84 CPR Magazine

that stretch is no longer suitable for high speed driving. The Club Circuit is not particularly challenging and is made up from several sweeping bends linked with some fast, level straights. This gave the drivers a chance to show the children what the cars could do without them having worry too much about keeping the cars on the track. As the first group of children began to arrive, the Sporting Bear’s members sprang into action and helped with the inevitable filling out of registration forms. As many of the kids were confined to wheelchairs, getting them into the cars wasn’t going to be a straightforward operation, but the club was determined to give rides to the all the youngsters and overcome any obstacles that might crop up.

Janet McPherson One lady who was doing a fantastic job was Sporting Bears Membership Secretary Janet McPherson. Janet was organising the kids, selling raffle tickets, helping to lift children out of wheelchairs into the cars and taking care of any special needs or requests. “Who wants to go in the Ferrari?” she shouted, and nearly every young boy at the event put his hand up! Nobody would be going home disappointed, as Janet made sure each and every one of them got a ride in

Tom’s Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder made a lot of smiles during the day. their chosen car. It must have taken a great deal of effort for Janet to stay away from the cars and the track as she has been known to do the odd bit of racing herself. In 1972 she took up karting and a few years later switched to single-seater racing in her Lotus MX61 and raced against some talented drivers, including ex-F1 team owner Eddie Jordan.

Football Clubs Working alongside Janet and her team were the guys from the ‘Everton in the Community’ scheme. This is a programme run by Everton Football Club which gets involved with charitable work in the local area. The EFC team set up football games for the children and even did

Ferrari 360 out on track. some face painting for some of the younger kids. The Everton crew also brought along a football shirt, signed by the entire premiership team, which was being donated as one of the raffle prizes. In fact, all the major football and rugby clubs in the northwest were contacted and

asked if they would donate a prize to help the Bears raise extra funds for the charities. Liverpool Football Club sent a shirt signed by the entire squad, Manchester City sent a very nice signed football, Wigan Athletic offered two match tickets plus dinner in the players lounge after the game and St Helens October 2011 85

Chester Porsche kindly loaned two cars for the day including this Panamera.

The famous Aintree stands make a great setting. Rugby Club also donated a signed shirt. Sadly, the one club that sent nothing was Manchester United; especially disappointing since two of the organisations benefiting from the raffle were actually Manchester-based children’s charities.

Amazing Cars So, what other cars were there? Well, it’s a long list, but; several Porsches, Ferrari 360, 308GTS and a Dino, two Aston Martin V8 Vantage, two Lamborghini Gallardo Spyders, a TVR Tuscan, a 86 CPR Magazine

Noble M12, a Lancia Stratos, a Maserati Spyder and Coupe, an Austin Healey 3000, a couple of Lotus’, an X-Bow and even a Brooklands Capri 280. There were lots more too, so apologies to those I have left out. There were a few comedy moments during the day, like when the Ferrari 360 set off down the track with a Merseyside Police BMW in hot pursuit, only for the Police driver to watch the Ferrari disappear into the distance at a highly illegal speed. Good job this wasn’t a public road!

In fact, the Police guys really got into the spirit of the day and were happy to clamp some of the kids in handcuffs and take them around the track with blue lights flashing and sirens wailing. The only aspect that I personally found disappointing was when I heard that Aintree hadn’t provided the track for nothing; despite being home to the ‘Sport of Kings’, the Aintree hierarchy still wanted payment for use of the track. It seemed a bit mean, considering what it was being used for, but thankfully Bentley UK Ltd kindly stepped in and paid for the cost of the circuit. It was an incredibly generous gesture and without it the day simply wouldn’t have gone ahead. Nice one Bentley! I should also mention that CES UK Limited provided the marquees, lunches and support vans, while Liverpool Audi laid on the breakfast and water, so as you can see, a lot of local businesses pulled together to make this day happen.

Moving The glorious weather was to play its part in more ways than one. Max told me after the event that one driver came up to him and said he was so glad it was sunny because it meant he could keep his sunglasses on all day. When quizzed as to why he needed the eyewear, he replied “so the kids can’t

see the tears.” It really was that moving, but to see the children having such a great time made it all very worthwhile.

A Ferrari 308GTS heads for the track.

Messages It wasn’t just the club and the drivers who thought the day was worthwhile. Shortly after the event the club received messages of thanks from many of the parents. One of them read: “I was invited by Claire house children’s hospice, which is a very special place my family loved to visit with my son Harvey. Sadly we lost Harvey last year aged four, but our whole family are continually offered support by Claire House. This event was especially important to my nine-year-old son Charlie as he misses visiting Claire House and meeting his friends. I did not know quite what to expect of the day and to be very honest the first hour was very emotional for me as I know Harvey would have loved to travel in a racing car! I have never in all my years of attending Claire House events seen so many happy, excited, smiling children’s faces. It is difficult to find an event that the whole family can enjoy together but you succeeded. I could see whole families with healthy children and children with health problems all smiling and enjoying the thrill of being a passenger in a fast car. The look of joy on

Merseyside Fire & Rescue sent along a fire engine. Impressive line-up!

He just wanted to say a huge thank you for yesterday. Andrew was genuinely moved by the gesture and could

honestly say, quote, “it was the best day they have had in their lives.” Due to Emily’s condition the family are not often able to a) afford or b) have the time to go out with the boys so for this to happen was a true gift for them as a family.” And finally: “I just wanted to write to say a massive thank you from myself and my family for providing us with such a wonderful day. daughter Holly has complex health needs so it is very rare for us as a family to be able to go out and enjoy an activity all together. Myself and my husband were blown away by everyone’s kindness today and the fact that they all give up there time and petrol and of course their amazing cars so that our children can enjoy a day out is just so lovely. Today my daughter Holly got to ride in a Bentley and feel

the sensation of driving at speeds of up to 100mph and that is something I never thought I would see and it’s a memory I will treasure forever and without each and every one of you that would not have been possible. My other two children Josh and Ruby have not stopped talking about it since we arrived home and Josh said it was one of the best days of his life, so from the bottom of my heart thank

no exception. To see a club like the Sporting Bears using those cars for such a great cause is both moving and inspirational and it will probably come as no surprise when I say that the club is hoping to do it all again next year, although possibly at a different location. It’s not a public event, so no spectators are allowed, but if you are in a position to offer support, a suitable car or even a race circuit, then get

in touch with the club via its website at: www.sportingbears.org.uk or drop Max an e-mail at: maxnw-sbmc@hotmail.co.uk You can also catch the Sporting Bears at the NEC, Birmingham in November when they will be running their Dream Rides at the Classic Motor Show, so why now head along to the show and grab a ride in your dream car? It’s all for a good cause and it’s great fun too, and what can be better than that?

With two podium places already this year, anticipation was high as the Robertson Racing Team headed to Elkhart Lake in Wisconsin for the ALMS Road America Race.

Tidy example of a Ferrari 365 Daytona went for £159,500.

The undoubted star of H&H Auction’s sale on September 21, staged among the aircraft of the Imperial War Museum, Duxford, was a 1929 Bentley 41/2 Litre ‘Le Mans’ Tourer. The car was first registered to Captain Woolf Barnato and most recently part of the Litchfield Collection. One of two normally aspirated 41/2 Litre models owned by the legendary three-times Le Mans winner, GU 1927 is arguably the most important such Bentley to come to auction in recent years and made notably above estimate at £528,000. It was purchased by a private collector from the north of England who intends to ‘drive and enjoy the car with his family for many years to come’. Heading a quartet of strongly performing Aston Martins was a beautifully turned out 1970 Olive Green DB6 MK2 Vantage that also greatly exceeded expectations at £209,000. A second MK2 of the same year, but in need of some general TLC, confirmed the increasing strength of the model by still fetching 98 CPR Magazine

The former concours-winning 1953 DB2 from the Litchfield Collection drew deserved applause when it was finally knocked down for £118,000, while the very rare 1937 2 Litre 15/98 Four Seater Tourer from the same stable returned £66,000. The Lichfield Collection’s Rosso Corsa 1973 Ferrari Daytona was on the money at £159,500. H&H has achieved significant prices for a number of AC Aces in the last few years and had little trouble selling the delightful ex-Hubert Patthey Ecurie des Trois Chevron 1956 Bristolengined example for £155,400. Lagondas are another strong suit for the Warrington-based auction house and it was no real surprise when the multiple-concours winning 1932 2 Litre Low Chassis Continental surpassed predictions to return £93,500.

Grand Prix : The Killer Years Format: PAL/Colour & B/W Running Time: 60 Minutes Price: £19.99 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk In the 60s and early 70s it was common for Grand Prix drivers to be killed racing, often televised for millions to see. Mechanical failure, lethal track design, fire and incompetence snuffed out dozens of young lives. They had become almost expendable as eager young wannabes queued up at the top teams gates waiting to take their place. Grand Prix: The Killer Years tells the story of the decades when Formula1 racing was out of control. Featuring many famous drivers including three times world champion Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, twice world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and John Surtees OBE, this exciting but shocking DVD explores how Grand Prix drivers grew sick of their closest friends being killed, to finally take control of their destiny. After much waste of life, the prestigious Belgian and German Grand Prix’s would be boycotted, drivers insisting that safety be put first, but it would be a long and painful time before anything would change. The DVD contains a mixture of race footage cut with interviews from several drivers as they look back on the most dangerous years in the sport’s history. The film is both shocking and moving. The footage of heroic driver David Purley trying to rescue a trapped and burning Roger Williamson while cars continue to race around him is uncomfortable to watch, but it makes you realise just how far the sport has come over the last few decades. This isn’t a particularly new film, and it has been shown on TV a few times, but if you haven’t seen it then grab a copy of this DVD. If nothing else it will give you an appreciation of just why there are so many safety related rules in F1 today and why they are so very necessary.

In a word, it makes owning a Porsche Boxster an unqualified thrill! How To Rebuild Pontiac V8s Author: R. Rotella Price: £17.95 Format: Paperback. ISBN: 9781934709412 Available From: www.chaters.co.uk Under the guidance of Semon “Bunkie” Knutson, John DeLorean, and a host of creative and innovative people, Pontiac established its own identity and distinct V-8 engine platform under the GM banner. In 1955, Pontiac’s V-8 started out at a meager 287 cubic inches, but it was an auspicious beginning to an illustrious line of engines. The potent powerplant grew and evolved over the coming decades, which included the 389 Tri-Power, 421, Ram Air IV 400, 428, and the Super Duty 455. These V-8s powered a number of legendary cars – the GTO, Firebird, Trans-Am, and many others. This Workbench series book will guide proud owners who will rebuild these engines and give them a new lease on life. Long-time Pontiac expert and magazine writer Rocky Rotella guides the reader through the entire rebuild process. Drawing on his vast experience, Rotella uses detailed captions and explanatory photos to show each crucial step of the disassembly, inspection, machine work, parts selection, assembly, and break-in process. The book instructs the reader how to skillfully pull the engine and prevent damage to the car. It documents how to carefully inspect the components for problems and fix these issues that could spell doom for a newly rebuilt engine. The book discusses finding a reputable and professional machine shop that specializes in Pontiac engines, as well as aftermarket parts and OEM parts interchange for high-performance, so you can select the best parts for a particular engine. All essential machine shop procedures are covered in detail. Inspection and pre-assembly are thoroughly explained. Most importantly, the methodical and practical approach provides the insight and vital information required for the task, as with all Workbench series titles. This, the first-ever book dedicated to rebuilding the Pontiac V-8 engine, is a valuable addition to any Pontiac enthusiast’s library. Includes key machining information specific to Pontiac V-8 engines. With 144 pages & 390 colour photos. MG: Haynes Classic Makes Series (3rd Edition) Author: Malcolm Green & Updated by Andrew Roberts Price: £25.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780857331076 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk Little needs saying about MG’s contribution to the classic car world, but unlike many long defunct manufacturers, the MG story still rolls on and on. Of course, that means that any books previously written about the marque are already out of date. With that in mind, Haynes has re-released it respected Classic Make Series book to include the most recent chapter in MG’s history. The third edition of this highly respected book brings MG’s rollercoaster story right up to date, to include the new models produced by today’s Chinese owners. The core appeal of this colourful book, though, is the classic MGs and all models from 1923 are covered, with special emphasis on the T-types, the MGA and the MGB - the most popular British sports car ever. The authoritative text is supported with buying tips, personal impressions of individual models and detailed data.

www.cprmag.com Le Mans 24 Hours: The Official History 1949-59 Author: Quentin Spurring RRP: £45.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9781844255375 Available From: www.haynes.co.uk This book, the third in Haynes’ series of officially endorsed titles about the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours, covers the period of this world-renowned event’s revival and evolution following the Second World War. The story is told in great detail by means of a commentary accompanying over 400 photographs, many of them not previously published. Le Mans 24 Hours: The Official History of the World’s Greatest Motor Race 1949-59 is an irresistible book for any enthusiast of long-distance sports car racing. The post-war revival of the Le Mans 24 Hours took four years. The site had been used as an air force base by both the British and the occupying Nazis, and bombed often. It had been mined when converted later to a prison camp. Completely new pits and grandstands had to be built for the resumption of the world’s most famous motor race in 1949. Only six years on, those new facilities had to be demolished, in response to the worst accident in motor racing history. Two cars collided in a kink in the start/finish straight, and the parts of one of them scythed 100 metres through the spectators. Eighty lost their lives. The shock was widespread, and threatened the very existence of the race. It survived, but major reconstruction was again needed for a second renaissance. The distressing catastrophe of 1955 was the most significant event of the 11-year period covered by this book. Yet there is so much more to know about the 1950s - a very important decade in the Le Mans story. Ferrari and Jaguar raced to stake claims as the foremost manufacturers of high-performance cars. Mercedes-Benz came back from war-ravaged Germany and again set the standards in race car engineering. Aston Martin finally won at its 20th attempt. Enormous crowds - approaching half a million people - saw the first rear-engined saloons to compete at Le Mans, the first mid-engined sports-racing cars, the first diesels. As the victorious manufacturers actively promoted their successes, their commercial rivals also set out to win. As many as 15 brought ‘works’ teams every June, with purpose-built cars. On-track performance soared. In 1949, the fastest car hit 135mph (217kph) on the unique Mulsanne straight. Before the end of the 1950s, top speeds exceeded 180mph (290kph). Le Mans 24 Hours: The Official History of the World’s Greatest Motor Race 1949-59 tells the stories of these increasingly potent racing cars and conveys the punishing nature of an incomparable event - the ultimate test of the mental and physical abilities of the fragile individuals who make up racing teams, be they drivers, engineers, strategists or mechanics. Million Dollar Classics Author: Martin Derrick/Simon Clay RRP: £27.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9789079761968 Available From: www.chaters.co.uk The allure of beautiful and rare cars is endless, since the beginning of the motoring age people have aspired to own and drive the quickest, the coolest, and the most expensive cars. Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations. Research the type of car you are buying so you know what to look for. If you are unsure, take an expert along with you.
