Amazing cars bask in Bank Holiday Heatwave!
A special track day at Faye de Bretagne in France
Editorial It feels like we are getting ever closer to a true all electric solution to our motoring needs. The introduction of hybrid fuel systems which combine alternative means of power with more conventional petrol or diesel engines are a step in the right direction, but ultimately, they are still a compromise. Those manufacturers who have taken the plunge and produced 100% electrically powered cars, albeit in prototype or concept form, have been plagued by low endurance, massive batteries and ridiculously long re-charging times, all of which make the cars about as useful as an ejector seat in a helicopter! However, as our ace roving reported Chris McEvoy found out recently, these ‘hybrids’ really aren’t that bad, especially the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid that he tested in our feature. It certainly sounds like a viable prospect, even if it does lack the power and speed of its all-petrol stable-mates. Check out our feature on page 52 to find out more about this impressive performance car. So, what other delights does this issue hold, I hear you ask. Well, we sent our Editor to the deepest, darkest parts of Bedfordshire (that’s Santa Pod!) to check out the awesome ‘Mini in the Park,’ which showcased a mix of concours, custom and club cars, and also gave some of the more adventurous drivers a chance to blast their cars down the famous ‘quarter mile’ drag strip. Venturing slightly further afield, Desmond Finnan led a group of cars to France for a track day at Faye de Bretagne that featured an amazing mix of cars and even a Jaguar E-Type. Another great event, although not quite so high octane, was the Knebworth Classic Motor Show. A well established date on the calendar, this show has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years, and this year was no exception with a fantastic display of cars over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Well, as always we hope you enjoy reading this latest issue of Classic, Performance & Retro. Drive safe!

Beaulieu Bonanza!
Beaulieu Simply Classics A Bank Holiday Success! Beaulieu kick-started it’s motor-fuelled August bank holiday weekend with Simply Classics on Sunday August 25. This popular event saw a stunning range of pre-1988 vehicles drive into the grounds of the National Motor Museum to create an impressive beautiful display of classic cars. A number of clubs were in attendance, including the TR Register, Austin Healey Club and the C5Alive Sinclair C5 Owners’ Club, all of them bringing along a fine selection of their cars for visitors to admire. Motoring artist, Ian Cook, of Popbang Colour, was present at the event, allowing visitors to watch as he created an image of a Volkswagen Golf Mk1. Ian is known for his use of unconventional painting tools, including radio controlled cars, actual car tyres and toy car wheels. He had a number of paintings for sale on his stand with special show offers available. On the day, visitors to Beaulieu were asked to vote for their favourite vehicle on display in the People’s Choice Awards. The winner was Mark Young of Witchampton, Dorset, with his beautiful 1958 Jaguar XK150 SE drop-head coupé (see pic). Mark was presented with a Beaulieu Trophy and Autoglym gift pack by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu in an afternoon presentation ceremony on the Beaulieu Arena. The top 12 vehicles voted for in the awards took part in a cavalcade through the grounds, and were followed by a parade of ten quirky Sinclair C5s that provided great entertainment for visitors as they whizzed through the parkland almost soundlessly. The provisional date for next year’s Simply Classics event is Sunday 24th August 2014. www.beaulieu.co.uk
Kop Run
Napier Railton Lined Up For Kop Hill Climb If you are the sort of person who gets excited at the thought of seeing some incredibly rare pre-war racers thundering up a hill (and let’s face it...who doesn’t!) then you might want to head to Buckinghamshire on September 21-22 for this year’s Kop Hill Climb. One of the star attractions will be the iconic Napier Railton which will be making a rare appearance away from its home in the Brooklands museum. The car still holds the lap record at Brooklands after it clocked an impressive average of 143.44 mph around the Surrey race circuit back in 1935. It sounds incredible too, with its 12 cylinder, 24-litre Napier Lion aircraft engine pushing out 502bhp. Among the other cars blasting up Kop Hill will be a ‘Blower Bentley’ and a Talbot GO 54. Over 400 cars are expected to take part during the weekend with an additiona 200 on static display in the paddock. Other attractions will include a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust Flight, a ‘wall of death’ motorcycle display and live music. There will also be a ‘Soapbox Challenge’ which youngsters can take part in. Single day tickets are charged at £8 for adults in advance, while children under-12 go free. Weekend entry is £16 per person. www.kophillclimb.info

Rare Auto Cobra Sells
Rare Cobra Stars At Auctions America A rare 1964 Shelby Cobra that sold for $825,000 was the highlight of the California Collector Car Auction which was run by Auctions America in Burbanks, California, on August 1-3. The car was built with the rare automatic gearbox option and had recently been restored to an exceptionally high standard. The second most expensive car sold at the event was a stunning 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, which once belonged to actor Robert Stack, selling for $808,500. Other top sellers included: a 1952 Cunningham C3 Coupe ($407,000), a 1971 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona ($401,500) and a 1974 Ferrari 246GTS Dino ($291,500). The cars were just a small selection of around 400 lots being offered at the sale which returned a combined sales total of over $17.2 million. www.auctionsamerica.com

Grab A Rusty Roller!
Rolls-Royce ‘Barn Finds’ Under Offer And the barn finds just keep coming! Last month we reported on a cache of 200 Porsches being sold by Anglia Car Auctions in Kings Lynn, but now it seems H&H Auctions are offering an equally impressive collection of restoration projects. The haul, which is made up of 13 Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, was found at a what the auctioneer calls a ‘small town garage.’ The majority of the cars being offered are 20/25 variants, but there is also two Phantom IIs and a pair of Silver Wraiths. None of the cars are in a running state, and haven’t moved for decades, and most are being offered in the sale with ‘no reserve.’ Perhaps the most desirable example in the collection is the 1933 Olympia Motor Show 1933 Phantom II Continental Touring Saloon which is estimated to sell for £20-30,000. www.classic-auctions.com

Restoration Show Gears Up To Welcome Thousands Of Visitors Organisers of the 13th Footman James Classic Vehicle Restoration Show in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, say they are expecting over 5,000 visitors to attend the event which takes place on November 2-3. It promises to be a well supported show too, with over 150 exhibitors, including car clubs, autojumblers and traders, having already booked stand space across the four large exhibition halls. Naturally, being a restoration show, visitors can expect a number of ‘live’ displays showing various repair and restoration techniques. Event organiser Nigel Stevens said: “Clubs are registering their displays all the time, but there are already confirmed entries for extensive restoration projects.” He added: “Others will focus squarely on aspects of car restoration, be it engine or chassis, general overhaul or finishing touches, such as chromework and polishing. “Many of our visitors are looking for advice, services and spares to restore or maintain their vehicles over the winter months.” For information on ticketing and location, visit the show’s website: www.bccsl.co.uk
Show Success!
Hampshire Show Grows In Size And Stature! Breamore House, near Fordingbridge, Hampshire, provided the backdrop to the second Hampshire Classic Motor Show in August. The team at Gemini Events worked hard to build on last year’s relaunch of the once-popular show, which had been absent from the calendar for eight years, and their efforts were rewarded by an excellent turnout of local clubs and individual owners who displayed their classic vehicles in the grounds of the magnificent Elizabethan manor house. A highlight of the show was the special display of over eighty cars from the Standard Motor Club who enjoyed a reserved area of the showground and ran their own concours competition as part of their national rally weekend. Darrell Cunningham, press officer of the Standard Motor Club said: ‘We were delighted to be part of this year’s show. Gemini Events really looked after us and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were able to organise our own show within a show at no cost to the club. I’d recommend other clubs contact Gemini to do something similar at other venues next year.’ Stephen Smith, Events Director at Gemini Events, was enthusiastic about the show. ‘This year saw pre-bookings increase by over 50%, there were many more club stands and a lot more visitors. I think we can safely say that the Hampshire Classic Motor Show is firmly back on the calendar!’ www.classicmotorshows.co.uk

Historic F1
Masters Expands Into American Historic Racing Masters Historic Racing is expanding into America by acquiring the operations of Historic Grand Prix Inc, America’s historic Formula One organiser. The new American organisation will continue to organise events at America’s iconic circuits as well as canvassing organisers and HGP members to get their feedback. The organisation will be provisionally run from the Masters existing UK office, with a satellite office in the USA, organising the events under the Masters Historic Racing umbrella. Going forward the American series will be called Masters HGP. Ron Maydon of Masters said: “I am delighted to be able to announce this news which underlines Masters’ commitment to historic Formula One racing around the World. Historic Grand Prix Inc is the only series concentrating on historic F1 in America, and we want to build on that hard work and enhance the image of historic F1 further. With one set of regulations in operation across both continents, we are hoping that it will promote more European drivers to race in America and vice versa. I’d like to pay tribute to James King, Phil Reilly and Rebecca Evans for all their hard work in the past and their confidence in Masters to allow us to take HGP forward into the future and look forward to personally meeting the drivers and car owners at future events.” HGP Director, James King, said: “Having shared values and standards with Masters for many years, Rebecca, Phil and I are very pleased to pass the torch to Ron and his proven, enthusiastic Masters Team. The HGP car owners, drivers and teams, as well as Formula One fans and the entire historic motor sport community, will benefit from this exciting development” www.themastersseries.com

Classic Stages In Store For Red Kite The classic special stages in Crychan, Cefn Llwydlo and Caio are in prime condition ahead of the Red Kite Stages which will be held on Sunday September 8, round five of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship. “We drove the Stages on Tuesday evening and Crychan and Cefn Llwydlo have been totally re-graded and are in the best condition we have seen for years,” said Secretary of the Meeting John Morgan. Meanwhile, the 8.5-mile Caio stage has not been used since the Red Kite in January 2011. Heavy snow on the original January date forced the team at Amman and District Motor Club to postpone the 2013 event, which will now run over the same route on Sunday 8 September. Entries are now coming in well, from both R.A.C. contenders and crews in the concurrent modern event. The compact rally will again be based at the Castle Hotel in Llandovery and offers 45 miles of classic gravel stages for £450 in a route that includes 100 road miles. The first car is scheduled to leave Llandovery at 9am and return to the finish at around 3pm. Scrutineering and documentation inspection will be held from 1pm to 6pm on Saturday. www.redkitestages.co.uk

Stormy Success!
Rain Fails To Dampen VSCC Prescott Speed Hill Climb Mac Hulbert’s ‘R4D’ claimed ‘Fastest Time of the Day’ at this year’s Vintage Sports-Car Club Prescott Speed Hill Climb on August 3-4, in a battle that came down to the wire in the closing minutes of a thrilling weekend’s competition. Practice on Saturday enjoyed warm sunshine which saw many drivers achieving respectable times, and after partying to the sounds of ‘Eureka Jazz’ and ‘Black Elvis’ in Prescott Clubhouse on Saturday evening, they all dreamt of breaking class records on Sunday; but it was not to be, as storms gathered and the first runs on Sunday morning were all taken in very wet conditions. A unique gathering of very early Aston Martin cars from the Pre-1927 Bamford and Martin era paraded up the hill during the lunch break, after which, the weather improved with periods of sunshine allowing some to take the upper hand against their fellow competitors as the track began to dry. As the faster cars of the latter classes took to the hill, the overall accolades were all still to play for. Robert Cobden had the fastest practice time (42.03 seconds) after Saturday, but he was over exuberant and spun the Riley Falcon Special at ‘Pardon Corner’ so at this stage, 2012 victor, Terry Crabb was ahead of the field with a climb of 45.89 seconds in ERA R12C, which gave him the Class 14 win. Charlie Martin put the ‘RIP’ Special in prime position in the Vintage stakes with a blistering run of 46.28 seconds to take first Vintage in the Class. Tension in the paddock rose as Classes 15 and 16 warmed up and the two ERAs of James Baxter (R4A) and Mac Hulbert (R4D) made their way to the start line to duel for the spoils. Commentator Chris Hartley had the crowd on the edge of their seats as he relayed the pair’s split times on the course. Hulbert put all his vast experience into his run and crossed the line a nail biting 0.36 seconds faster to collect the crown of ‘Fastest Time of the Day’ and the coveted Mays Berthon Trophy. The action was far from over however as the crowd cheered their hero, Nick Topliss, who took first Vintage in his GN ‘Gnome’ in the same class. The paddock was rumbling to the sounds of Chris Williams’s 24 litre Napier Bentley making for the line, whilst Robin Baker achieved Fastest Vintage and topped Class 16 with his 1930 Hispano Amilcar Special. Two plucky females were also in the awards in this class with Anne Scaldwell taking 2nd overall and 2nd Vintage with the 1908 GN/JAP Grand Prix, and Amber McHamish winning 1st Handicap in her 1929 Stinson Special. www.vscc.co.uk

Knebworth Classic Motor Show
Held at Knebworth Park on August 25-26, the Knebworth Classic Motor Show has become one of the biggest independent classic car shows in southern England. Simon Hazeldine dropped in to catch the action.
B
eing a bit of an old rocker (can you believe my kids ask me to turn MY music down!), the name Knebworth will always be associated primarily with music, in my mind at least. The Tudor Gothic style house, 16 www.cprmag.co.uk
set in the rolling grounds of the Knebworth Estate, has witnessed some amazing open-air concerts from the likes of likes of The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen, Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Genesis, The
Beach Boys, Deep Purple, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Dire Straits, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Oasis. The list reads like a Who’s Who of music royalty. There is no denying that Knebworth is up there with Donington, Reading,
Glastonbury and Woodstock as one of great music venues, but it’s not just in the music world that Knebworth has made a name for itself, it is also pretty well known in motoring circles too. As if to underline that point, this year marked the 23rd anniversary of the Knebworth Classic Motor Show, a show that has undergone a few
changes in recent years, thanks to the event’s new organisers, Gemini Exhibitions, who took over its running in 2011. Since then, it has grown is size and stature, and this year saw previous records smashed when over 2,000 vehicles turned up along with several thousand enthusiastic visitors, to make this the biggest Knebworth car show
for many years. Of course, that success isn’t just down to the work of the organisers, oh no. It was also down to that rarest of phenomena - a hot and sunny British Bank Holiday!
If It Aint Broke... As usual, the show was held over two days, and thanks mainly to the changing September 2013 17
weather each day turned out to be very different from the other one. The Sunday started off dull and damp, and there was a steady drizzle as the first cars arrived to take up their place on the showground. The owners of these cars really deserve credit for turning up despite the inclement weather. A lot of owners who had promised their cars simply failed to turn up, leaving several holes in what was otherwise a superb display of vehicles. I am used to attending cars shows in the rain now, and always carry my wellies in the boot of my car... just in case. Following the mantra of ‘if

Right: The beautiful gardens in front of Knebworth House. it aint broke...don’t fix it,’ the organisers followed the same successful formula as in previous years, where cars were displayed according to year and type. For example, all the ‘1945-59 Sports & GTs’ were parked together, as too were the ‘70-88 Saloons &
Open Tourers’ and so on. In fact, there were 13 different classes of vehicle on show, all displayed in their own specific areas.
Club Classics The only cars at the event which were not part of these displays were those on their own particular club stands, among which were the Letchworth Classic & Vintage Car Club, which arrived on the Monday with a fascinating arena cavalcade of motoring history spanning more than 80 years, the Classic Z Register, The Singer Owners’ Club, the Volvo Owners’ Club, the Bedfordshire RS Owners’ Club and around 30 others. An award was presented to the

club with what was deemed to be the best stand at the show, and this year it went to the Classic Z Register for its beautiful display of cars. The register’s Chairman - Stuart Saunders - was enthusiastic about the show. “We’ve had the best turnout of club vehicles in years and everyone was commenting on how the show has come alive again. The new layout is excellent and the growing number of proper trade stands is a big attraction. We are already looking forward to
Immaculate MGTC.

and the afternoon was warm and sunny. That however, was nothing compared to the weather on the following day which was an absolute scorcher! What a difference a day makes, as hundreds of classic cars arrived at the gates on Knebworth early in the morning for what would be an amazing day of motoring magic. Once again, the cars were parked in the same layout as used on the previous day, but this time there were no gaps. In fact, it was a struggle to get them all in, and the guys arranging the parking certainly deserve credit for a job well done. September 2013 19

Period ‘in-car entertainment.’
Away from the clubs and the main car displays, a central arena played host to some special displays, the highlight of which was the famous ‘Decibel Duel.’ This is where some of the louder car at the show are invited to demonstrate just how loud their cars are by revving their engines in front of an appreciative audience. The onlookers then vote on which one is the loudest. It’s all done in the name of fun, and it is certainly entertaining, made more so by the show’s excellent commentator Steve Redway.

themselves on some of the fairground rides and bouncy castles, or browse some of the craft stalls that were selling everything from homemade jam to jewellery. Then of course there were the usual Knebworth attractions, such as the house with its beautifully tranquil gardens, the adventure playground, or the Dinosaur Trail with its 72 life-sized dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures. It’s simply impossible to get bored here! I must also give a mention to the food vendors at this show, who for once seemed to be charging sensible prices for their offerings. With the number of shows and events I attend each year, I am starting to get a feel of which ones offer good food at reasonable prices, and which one serve up junk and charge a fortune for it. Silverstone falls into that latter category for charging

Of course, the main attraction was the cars, and among the automotive highlights at this year’s show were Chris Parkhurst’s battered and much travelled Austin Seven which he has driven to places such as

Stephen Smith, Events Director at Gemini Events, said he was delighted by the record turnout. “The weather on Sunday tried to spoil our weekend but we still had some fabulous vehicles on display and plenty for the visitors to see as the sunshine developed. It was followed by a glorious Bank Holiday Monday with the most extensive display of vehicles I have seen since we took over

It will be a spectacular and unique gathering to celebrate the silver anniversary of what is now re-established as a really great motor show.”

mitp Mini In The Park
Mini In The Park
Mini In The Park gives owners of both classic and new Minis the opportunity to meet, chat...and burn some rubber on Santa Pod’s famous drag strip! Simon Hazeldine called in to find out more.
T
he humble Austin Mini has undergone something of a rebirth over the last decade, making the transition from cheap rusty run-around to highly sought after classic car before anyone really had time to notice. In the 1980s and 90s, the Mini was the ultimate ‘throw-away’ car, one which you could run into the ground and eventually scrap 24 www.cprmag.co.uk
without giving it a second These days, the Mini seems thought. Run it, wear it out, to have a more enthusiastic scrap it became the norm with following than ever before, Minis, and this ‘disposable car’ with numerous well attended attitude continued on, even events being held all over the after production stopped in UK during the summer months. 2000. Ten years later and One of these was the massive all those old Minis had been Mini in the Park show which scrapped; suddenly it became was held at Santa Pod Raceway apparent that the once in Bedfordshire on August 11. extremely common Mini had MITP - as it is know in Mini become a rarity. circles - caters for owners
of both the original ‘classic’ Minis and the newer BMW Minis, which if nothing else, guarantees a good turn out of cars. It also stirs up a certain amount of politics, with some classic Mini owners looking at the newer cars with a certain amount of disdain, and viceversa. Don’t get me wrong, there isn’t any animosity, it’s just friendly rivalry and lighthearted banter.
Look what those meddling kids did to this 69 Mini Van!
Park...What Park? So, what’s in a name? Well Mini in the Park is a confusing one at best because although Santa Pod is a good location, by no stretch of the imagination can it be called a park. There isn’t a tree in sight and the place is as flat as a pancake...hardly parkland material. Still, Mini in the Park has a nice ring to it, so best not be too picky. In fact, Santa Pod is an ideal place to hold an event such as this. For a start it is one of the few venues that has some form of race track which anyone with a car and driving licence can drive on. It also has acres of hard-standing (so no boggy ground to worry about) and massive parking and camping areas which can handle as many visitors as the show can attract.

Jet pipes glowing red as the Turbonator makes a run.
Jet Power! The show itself features a mixture of track action, where Mini owners can take their cars for a blast down Santa Pod’s famous ‘quarter mile,’ along with other static attractions like the concours competition, trade stands, a ‘tech tent’ and club displays. Down at the far end of the display area is the ‘live action arena’ which was showcasing various acts like September 2013 25

One of the star attractions at this year’s MITP was the debut appearance of two jet-powered Minis. One of these - going by the name of the ‘Turbonator’ was built by Mini enthusiast Dan Goodwin. Amazingly, the tiny Mini is powered by not 26 www.cprmag.co.uk

The enthusiast who had previously twin Garrett TV94 powerplants appeared on the ‘Scrapheap consume around a gallon of Challenge’ TV programme in jet-fuel per minute and the an episode that was filmed at Turbonator is fitted with a Santa Pod. Norfolk. His car only has the one engine, but it does happen to be a pretty impressive one. It is a Rolls-Royce Nimbus Mk105 gas turbine helicopter engine complete with ‘afterburner.’ The jet throws out a massive 1,200lbs of thrust and burns around 40 litres of jet fuel per minute, so while it might be
fast, you wouldn’t want to do any long journeys in it! Both cars made runs up Santa Pod’s quarter mile drag strip several times during the day, along with some jet-powered go-karts (I kid you not!) and the awesome jet-powered Fireforce dragster which rattled the windows and set off car
alarms for miles around.
Bugatti Beater! The ‘Run What Ya Brung’ part of the show gave visitors a chance to drive their own Minis down the drag strip and see what sort of time they could set. Some were taking it more seriously than others, but one September 2013 27
BMW Minis were welcome at MITP too. Lining up for a run at MITP.
Some great cars on show!
The only thing we can say about this is...why? man who wiped the floor with all opposition was Stuart Meads who owns and drives the ‘world’s fastest Mini.’ He bought the car over 15 years ago for just £500 but has since spent around £95,000 upgrading it to its current spec. The car will do 0-60mph in less than two seconds and would frighten even a Bugatti Veyron if it were road legal. Pushing out a massive 700hp, Stuart’s Mini relies on a parachute packed into the boot to help slow the 28 www.cprmag.co.uk

The paintwork had been brilliantly done and it was an instant hit with the (meddling!) kids at the show. If fact, despite this being a show for just one particular type of car, it was surprising just how much variety there actually was. Yes they were all Minis, but there were customs cars, funny cars, racing cars, concours cars, everyday cars and of course jet cars.
Some great concours contenders. Great detailing.
Grab A Bargain There was plenty of variety in the trade area too, where visitors could buy just about any Mini part they could ever wish for. There were some great deals too; one stand selling brand new front panels, complete with two front wings, September 2013 29

static cars. The jet cars would have to be my highlight, simply because I have never seen a jet-powered Mini before, but there were literally hundreds of really cool cars there. Perhaps the best comment I heard during the day, and it’s one that pretty much assures the Mini’s future
as a highly collectable car, was when one highly regarded and knowledgeable Mini enthusiasts told me that Minis were currently appreciating in value faster than gold! Now that’s quite impressive, especially for a ‘throw-away’ car that was created to offer cheap motoring to the masses.

Refined Speed Avid Bentley enthusiast Phil Sullivan takes the new Bentley Flying Spur for a drive. It is a car that Bentley says is the most powerful four-door model it has ever made, but Will it live up to Phil’s expectations?
E
arlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show, British luxury car maker Bentley unveiled the all-new ‘Flying Spur’ - a car that offered impressive speed along with the finest quality that money can buy.
32 www.cprmag.co.uk
Refined speed if you like. The company say it is the “ most powerful four-door model” it has ever made, and having seen and driven some of the previous cars to emerge from its Cheshire headquarters, that claim alone is more than
enough to get my attention. Bentley’s styling team has developed an athletic design for the new Flying Spur that combines traditional Bentley styling cues with a sporting stance and contemporary details. Sharp feature lines
Paul Khouri and Howard Grundon battle for position.
complement muscular rear haunches, while LED daytime running lights, dipped headlights and taillights characterise the front and rear profiles. Its fair to say the exterior fits the current ‘house style’ that Bentley has adopted in recent years, with many of the styling features being common across its range. For example, those lights are almost identical to the ones September 2013 33
Elegance and power - the Bentley Flying Spur has it in abundance.
Entertainment suite and a new hand-held Touch Screen Remote which allows rearcabin occupants to control an extensive range of features from the comfort of their seat. An eight-channel, eightspeaker audio system with Balanced Mode Radiators provides high quality sound clarity, with the 1100W Naim for Bentley premium system available as an option.
The driver has lots of gadgets to play with!
Massive Power fitted to the Mulsanne, and so on.
Gentleman’s Club Bentley’s interior designers have created a well appointed, spacious cabin that wraps advanced acoustic and electronic technologies in beautiful hand-crafted leather hides and wood veneers. This really is a ‘gentleman’s club’ 34 www.cprmag.co.uk
on wheels. Just add cigar smoke for full effect! There are gadgets galore for both driver and passengers, and it’s hard to imagine anyone getting bored on a journey in this car. The Bentley is fitted with what the manufacturer calls ‘touchscreen infotainment,’ and has mobile connectivity including Wi-Fi, a Rear Seat
Things are just as impressive under that massive bonnet. Powering the Flying Spur is Bentley’s renowned 6.0-litre, twin turbo W12 engine, coupled to a ZF eight-speed transmission. Pumping out a massive 625 PS (616bhp) and 800Nm of torque, the new Flying Spur features more power than any other Bentley four-door in history.
Stunning lines make this an attractive Bentley.
A 14% improvement in the power-to-weight ratio over the previous model, it delivers a breath-taking 0-60mph time of 4.3 seconds and a topspeed of 200mph (322 km/h). In keeping with the modern Bentley tradition, power is delivered to the road via allwheel drive with a 40:60 rear-
biased torque split for a surefooted, engaging drive in all road and weather conditions. In my all too brief stint behind the wheel, I find myself feeling remarkably at ease, despite the abundance of power below my right foot. The steering feels light; you just know it is going to, but it still seems
odd on a car of this size. The throttle response is instant, and on a quiet rural road, I experiment with launching the car from a standstill and building up speed as quickly as possible. I am not disappointed! The car takes off like a scalded cat, digging its read end into the road and rearing up at the front as I am pressed back into the seat. Wow! This really is a beast of a car.
Improved Control
Passengers kept well entertained.
The W12 engine has recently undergone a complete engine management system upgrade to the latest Bosch ME17 interface, which results in improved torque management, turbocharger control, driveability and emissions performance, which gives a vast improvement in low speed responsiveness. September 2013 35
The Flying Spur’s responsive power delivery means it can handle city streets just as well as open roads.
36 www.cprmag.co.uk
The ZF transmission gives seamless and imperceptible shifts in under 200 milliseconds. The gearbox is not only designed to handle the mighty torque output of the W12 but also to ensure smooth and refined delivery of power to the wheels. An optimised set of gear ratios keep the engine in its most efficient operating range during light loads and cruise, contributing in an overall improvement in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of more than 13 per
cent over the outgoing model. You might thing that the Flying Spur is a ‘gas guzzler,’ and it is when compared to most lesser models, but it’s probably not as bad as you think. It delivers a combined cycle fuel economy of 19.2 mpg (14.7 litres/100 km), and CO2 emissions of 343 g/ km – impressive figures for a 12-cylinder ultra-luxury, high performance saloon. Overall the is one amazing car. Crass yet beautiful, stylish yet extravagant, it oozes charisma and power in a way that other
cars in its class could never match. It achieves exactly what it sets out to do - to deliver as much power as possible, in a dignified and elegant way. It perhaps doesn’t have quite the same presence as the slightly larger Bentley Mulsanne, but there really isn’t much in it, and you can almost feel the mere mortals jumping out of the way in their lesser cars as you approach. If you want to travel in style, and get there quickly, then this is the car for you September 2013 37

Cross-Channel Capers At Fay de Bretagne Like track days, but tired of Silverstone, Donington and Brand Hatch? Then why not cross the Channel and head to France where some exciting tracks, great food and wonderful attractions await, as Desmond Finnan explains.
L
ike a lot of fellow Englishmen, my wife and I like to head across to France each summer to sample some of the delights that this wonderful country has to offer. However, unlike most of my fellow countrymen, my holiday wasn’t organised by Thomas Cook...it was arranged by track day specialists Wheelsports and our destination was the Circuit de Bretagne near Nantes. Our hosts were staging a track day at the circuit on August 16-17, which would be attended by cars and drivers from Jersey and the mainland UK, and I thought it would be a great opportunity to 42 www.cprmag.co.uk

too much. For my wife this is a chauffeur’s holiday; I just cannot keep her from driving my Lotus! To get in the holiday mood we met up with some members from the GT40 Enthusiasts’ Club in the restaurant on the ferry, and caught up with each others news. I should perhaps
point out that prior to buying the Lotus, I myself had a GT40, hence my association with the club, with which I still have strong ties and many friends. The restaurant on the ferry was surprisingly good, and highly recommended for passing the time on the

affair, but more importantly, it gave me plenty of time to go and get some more petrol. One of the more pleasing aspects of this particular track day was the wonderful variety of cars taking part in the event. There were numerous makes taking part, among which were Porsches, GT40s, Ultimas, Caterhams, Westfields, Lotus, Alfa Romeos, Renaults, Fords, BMWs, Mercedes, and even an E Type Jaguar. turnout! And all gentlemen on the track too. We also had the services of Doctor John Laycock, an ARDS instructor to help us refine our driving technique. This was my fifth visit to this circuit and each time I have been here I have been blessed with beautiful sunny weather, and now that I have the Lotus, the sunshine means the roof can stay off for the duration of the visit. That’s one luxury I didn’t have
with the GT40 which could get quite hot in the sunshine.
Fun To Drive The track itself is great fun to drive and has two main straights. On the longest one of the two, my Elise S/E could just touch 130mph and the braking can be left till almost the last cone. On the shorter one, past the pits, I could usually hit about 100mph. The cars feed onto the circuit from the pits halfway along the pit straight. This leads into a 180 degree left hand bend which in turn leads to a right/ left chicane. This should be taken very wide, staying midtrack until the last moment. From there it gets quite intense. A series of chicanes and 180 degree bends lead to the main straight. As you approach, it
is important to keep the revs up so that you come on to the main straight with maximum acceleration, reaching 130mph before braking for a right hander and taking a late apex. Head straight for marshal’s post, brakes, turn right, late apex, change of direction for the left hander mid apex, then a right hander, late apex, on to a 90 degree left-hand bend using the gutter and the all the track including the escape road, then back on to the pit straight past the pits. Lap is now completed and very exciting! On the last session of the event, I will admit to missing a gear change into the first

Quality Cars We were on track Friday and/ or Saturday by choice. It was possible to do one day or both. The Porsches were very quick as indeed, was the Ultima Spyder of Chris Varey, a track day veteran. He was very generous and took many passengers out in his car. Then there were the GT40s which looked and sounded
awesome. The GT40s of Paul Walton and Chris Champion were built by each respective owner and both cars were a credit to their workmanship. The immaculate GT40 of Tony Hunt was built by GTD and maintained by Frank Catt of Wealden Engineering. Paul Brameld’s GT40 recently had an engine rebuild and is also a Wealden Engineering sorted car. Special mention should go to the Jaguar E Type which looked majestic out on the track. The BMW M3 was September 2013 47

driven with great enthusiasm buy Ian Stewart, while the Ford Focus RS of Damian Warman was driven sensibly and getting faster with time as it was his first ever track day. The Caterham and Westfields did not hang about as they were in the hands of some very experienced drivers. The Renault Sport was driven with great gusto too. A good time 48 www.cprmag.co.uk
was had by all and thankfully there were no accidents. Finally, just to end the session on a different note, we drove round the rack in convoy in the opposite direction and it was certainly a strange experience to take the corners ‘backwards.’ The three main clubs attending the weekend were the GT40 Enthusiasts Club, with nine
members and four cars, OF Racing had eleven members attending, and the Westfield contingent from Cirencester which also had several cars and drivers at the circuit. On the final evening we had drinks beside the swimming pool followed by a dinner, which rounded off our expedition in grand style. It was a boisterous and good
humoured dinner with balloons being flown from table to table, the Sage of Cirencester Choir and a number of complimentary speeches were orated.
Heading For Home We set off for home on Sunday and drove to Caen to catch the early evening boat to Portsmouth. This got us in at
22.30 and by 23.30 we were back home in Guildford in Surrey. We could have easily spent some more time in France seeing all the various sights. For example, it is possible to visit the famous Bayeux Tapestry, Pegasus Bridge, the beaches and museums at the site of the Normandy Landings or some of the many war
cemeteries. We opted to save these for another time, but we did stop at Fourgeres for lunch, a beautiful castle that is well worth a visit. Overall, we had a great action packed weekend, with a visit to a superb motor museum, two track days and some worthwhile sight-seeing. Aluminium Radiators For Classic Jaguars Available from: Cambridge Motorsport Parts Prices From: £615.00 + VAT See: www.cambridgemotorsport.com If your classic Jaguar has experienced cooling problems over the summer, Cambridge Motorsport Parts might just have the answer. At the moment, radiators are available for the XK series and most E-Types. MOMO ‘Prototipo’ Steering Wheel Available from: BG Direct Price: £166.00 inc VAT See: www.b-gdirect.com Italian company MOMO has long been associated with some very impressive steering wheels, though it has been said that many of their products are too ‘modernlooking’ to sit comfortably in your average classic. Consequently, other manufacturers have dominated the classic market for some time now, but the introduction of the new MOMO retro look Prototipo Steering Wheel could see that changing. The Prototipo is produced from the finest materials; leather, and aluminium to achieve a unique design in an attractive retro style. The sculpted grip section offers that distinctive MOMO driving sensation, with a perfect blend of comfort and sensitivity, that gives a pleasing experience behind the wheel. Features of the Prototipo steering wheel include: Full leather rim with contrasting stitch detail, wide rim for improved grip, machined centre spoke and MOMO horn push. The Prototipo is available in 350mm diameter and a choice of black or natural aluminium spokes. 50 www.cprmag.co.uk

Dual Circuit Master Cylinder For Classic Minis Available From: Mini Spares Price: £102.00 inc VAT See: www.minispares.com It goes without saying that braking systems need to be in tip-top condition if you are going to be safe in your car, and with some classics having brakes that can only be described as ‘poor’ it makes sense to make sure you have a top quality master cylinder fitted. Question is, can you still get the right part for your model? Well, those awfully nice chaps at Mini Spares can now offer replacement dual-circuit master cylinders for use on the diagonal split systems of the 1976-80 classic Minis. These last diagonal split models can be recognised by the rectangular plastic reservoir, the small cap and the switch in the body casting. This master cylinder also has metric unions and can be ordered under the original BL part number GMC167.

More and more car manufacturers are turning their attention to electric and hybrid powerplants to produce economic and environmentally friendly cars, but how will that affect performance cars? Chris McEvoy found out when he tested the new 2013 Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid at the Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.
T
he celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 has taken most of the headlines in the sporting press this year. It is fitting testament to the basic concept of the 911 and the continuous development of the breed that has maintained its popularity over those 50 (and counting) years. However those clever chaps in Stuttgart have also been hard at work combining the latest eco-technology with other cars in their range.

around the dash. The lineage is still there. The centre console alone has more buttons than a Pearly King’s jacket. As with all Porsches, the driving experience is what it’s all about, and so a drive around the Millbrook Alpine circuit was the ideal opportunity to test the new Panamera S E-Hybrid.
Above: A layout showing how the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid uses both a conventional petrol engine and electric motor to drive the wheels. The batteries can be charged by the petrol engine when not being used. Not too long ago a diesel Porsche would have had aficionados wailing and gnashing their teeth. But now it’s accepted. Well almost. So the development of hybrid vehicles was inevitable, and today they are available. But

has the formula been diluted, has the essence of Porsche been lost? In a word no. The Cayenne and Panamera hybrids are true Porsches, from their driving characteristics to the plethora of dials and information scattered
Electric power The powerplant retains the previously fitted supercharged petrol V6, but now mates it to a higher output electric motor. The new electric motor offers 95hp compared to the 47hp of its predecessor, and it has an improved 9.4kWhr lithium-ion battery. The combined packaged with 415hp is capable of 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and a top speed of

187mph. Even on battery power alone it will do a potentially licence losing 84mph. To get the power to the rear wheels, an eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic system is used and this is unique to the E-Hybrid. During the drive over the famous Millbrook Alpine route, the E-Hybrid swallowed everything without a murmur. It easily rode the rough bits, ascended

the steep up hills and cornered in true Porsche style. Flat and unruffled. Heading on to the high speed bowl it cruised easily at the ton (the maximum allowed on the day) pulling just over 2,000rpm, thanks to a super slick 8 auto box. The absence of wind or tyre noise even on

the concrete roadway of the bowl set standards that others will struggle to achieve. Ample proof that any journey, short or trans-continent can be driven in a relaxed and cosseted manner. This is going green with the emphasis on going. If you’re looking for something that will

(91.1), CO2 emissions in g/km 71. In real life it will depend upon a number of factors, not least of which will be how you’ve set the car up, what mood you’re in and how heavy your right foot is. The E-Hybrid offers three driving modes; E-Power, E-Charge and Sport. In E-Power only the
electric motor is used, ideal for town/city driving and this is the mode the vehicle starts in. In E-Charge, the battery pack is recharged from the petrol engine. This is very useful if you used a significant amount of battery power at the start of the journey and want to use it again at the
end. In many ways a typical city to city via a motorway journey. On arrival you can hook up to a suitable power outlet and recharge. And then there’s Sport mode. This uses the combined power of both motors, at greater than 80% throttle, to enjoy full

performance motoring. A mode I suspect will be used a great deal. Think KERS on F1 for the effect of the extra boost. Even within these settings there are subtle ways of increasing range and reducing consumption, a cruise feature and predictive stop start are examples.

Are there issues? Yes, but to paraphrase Frank Sinatra; ‘complaints, I’ve got a few’. The principle one being rear visibility, there isn’t much. And it’s expensive; prices in the UK will start around £90,000 and that’s before you’ve indulged yourself with added toys from
the options list. However the positives far outweigh the niggles. If you enjoy sporty driving, want to go green, but also want to go fast and can afford a bit of style and panache, then the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid could well be just what the doctor ordered

WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME
OUR DOCTRINE REMAINS THE SAME...
• Keep stocks high - you cannot sell a product if you don’t have the stock • Never lie to a customer - if supply is going to be 6 weeks, be honest and tell them so • Try to get every order out the same day • Keep the customer informed • Never take a credit card swipe or raise an invoice unless the goods are to hand • Sell value for money products - not the cheapest nor necessarily the best, but that which our experience suggests is good for the job • Offer advice if you feel capable of doing so but don’t talk rubbish!
Back in the 70’s, a Quick Ratio Escort Rack cost £200 plus. We developed an inexpensive DIY quick conversion kit and sold thousands, but now competively priced as a complete rack.
With the passage of time it’s easy to forget the ideas that Rally Design have developed that has kept the good old RWD Escort parts affordable to all. Some of our present customers were not even born when we first started from our lock-up garage unit!
http://www.rallydesign.co.uk Tel. 01227 792792 www.rallydesign.co.uk
We were the pioneers of bolt-on dedicated 4pot braking kits using the inexpensive Wilwood ally racing callipers, copied now by some of the biggest names in performance braking, but we were the first!
Still the only company to produce polyurethane suspension bushes by the injection moulding process, resulting in a high quality bush together with stainless crush sleeve at a very low price.
Such an inexpensive way to convert any 2” (50mm) old strut into a coil over unit. Simple ideas are sometimes the best. The roller top mount has always been a critical service item. Rally Design invested in press and moulding tools to ensure this vital part continued in production
Until Rally Design invested in new tooling, the industry relied on reconditioned old struts - now many in the shock absorber industry use Rally Design’s stub axles in their performance strut units.
All our coil springs are produced on OEM style N. C. Coilers - Minimum order of 300 coils per size. Our stock investment of over 20,000 springs has transformed the unit cost and quality of this vital suspension part.
Adjustable ‘in-situ’ TCA’s manufactured from new drop forged tooling eliminating all welding for a stronger, smarter and cheaper product. Weld-on double width kit eliminating the problem of TCA ‘pull forward’ or ‘tuck back’ positioned the double width unit exactly to your requirements. Combined with Polyrace bushes to suit varying roll bar dimensions.
Twin cam roll bar similar story to springs. Settled on 2000 pieces to ensure continuity of supply.
Taper leaf springs - we searched Europe and then Asia for a Taper Rolling Mill - Yes Sir! Minimum order quantity 20 tons. How many springs is that? - 20 tons worth Sir!
Roll cage padding - We invested in new tooling to buy direct from a foam converter. Minimum hands in the supply chain results in a BI fire retardant product which is well priced.
Our buyers found a battery produced for medical applications in large numbers which had the right spec and at an amazingly low price. Thousands in use.
Classic Ford Wheels - Purchased from one of the largest OEM wheel manufacturers to JWL standard, the best quality wheels at such a good price. Wheels always available ex-stock.
We searched the world to find the source manufacturer of the genuine Vermiculite manifold wrap. Now badge engineered by others but we are the European source.
AND NOW... Rally Design have invested in 15
new press tools to produce the Escort 1 or 2 balance Bar pedal Box with pressed pedals and design similar to the original Boreham converted box but at a price similar to box section pedals - doing the job right!
The RMD Maximum protection seat, priced at £99.50 plus VAT receives glowing reviews from our customers.
Silicon hoses - Fed up with the terrible delivery of UK hose manufacturers we invested in 500 new mandrel tools to produce this product direct from the moulder - we now have over 20,000 hoses in stock for instant dispatch. No delivery problems ever again.

With some of the world’s most enthusiastic car collectors jetting in to Pebble Beach for the annual Concours d’Elegance motoring week, it was hardly surprising that the planned auctions attracted the very best from the classic and performance car worlds. There was some stunning machinery on offer, most of which had equally stunning price tags to match, but the RM Auctions sale on August 17, certainly provided one of the week’s biggest highlights. Amongst the numerous blue-chip cars to go under the hammer during the first night of the sale, a fabulous 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider which boasts an incredible racing history and a unique pontoon fender body, stole the limelight by selling for $9,075,000. Bought new by Jim Kimberly of the Kimberly-Clark business empire, the car was campaigned extensively in period and won the SCCA National. The sale of this historic car confirmed the strength of the Ferrari marque and the demand for blue-chip examples with exceptional provenance and continuous documented history. The 375 MM was just one of numerous cars to achieve exceptional prices during the sale. Another car to attract significant pre-sale interest from collectors around the world was the 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K 66 www.cprmag.co.uk
WWW.CPRMAG.CO.UK Special Roadster, a rare and stunning pre-war grand touring car with one-off coachwork by Sindelfingen. Offered in outstanding, restored condition, this wonderful car garnered $7,480,000. Two further lots enjoyed exceptional bidding, including the 1955 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider, another spectacular sports racing Ferrari from the golden era of motorsport, which sold for $4,070,000 and the 1955 Jaguar D-Type, which sold for $3,905,000. Other notable cars changing hands during the Friday sale included an incredible, fully restored 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB Daytona, described as one of the best in the world, which exceeded its pre-sale estimate, selling for $770,000 and established a world record auction price for a production specification, noncompetition Daytona. Another car always in demand, a remarkably original 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra proved its appeal by selling for $924,000, while a rare car and a ‘modern’ classic, the awesome 1985 Porsche 959 ‘Vorserie’ sold for $670,000. A beautifully restored 1932 Chrysler CH Imperial Cabriolet, which established a new world record for the model at public auction, sold for $660,000, while an immaculate 1961 MercedesBenz 190SL Roadster, in stunning colours, sold for $269,500, also establishing a new world record for the model at public auction. If Friday’s auction reached great heights, then the sale on the following night went stratospheric! History was made when the ultrarare and exceptionally-desirable 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider, smashed its way

into the record books by selling for an incredible $27,500,000. With all proceeds being donated to charity by the consigning family, the car established a new worldrecord for a road-going car sold at public auction, whilst also lodging itself in the all-time record books as the second most expensive car ever sold at auction. Saturday night also witnessed another wonderful MercedesBenz, the 2012 Pebble Beach
Best of Show-winning 1928 680S Saoutchik Torpedo Roadster, secure $8,250,000, rounding off the top four places in a list of no less than 26 cars which exceeded $1,000,000 sale totals. The sale total of $125,000,000, a more than 30 percent increase over RM’s 2012 Monterey results, correspondingly establishes an average sale value in excess of $1,000,000 for each of the 120 lots sold. Stirling Moss A Racing Life Format: PAL Running Time: 100 minutes Price: £14.00 Available From: www.dukevideo.com Sir Stirling Moss is a true sporting legend, a man whose exceptional skills and determined character saw him overcome the odds again and again on his way to victory in motorsport’s most famous events. Although never crowned Formula One World Champion, Moss is rightly regarded as one of the greatest drivers ever. In 1963, after recovering from an horrific accident which nearly cost him his life, Moss retired from racing. In this remarkable film from the BP archive, he talks openly about his career, the cars, his rivals and leaving the sport which had been his life. In conversation with Raymond Baxter at Goodwood - scene of his career-ending accident - he reflects on his time with BRM, ERA, Maserati, Mercedes, Vanwall and Lotus, why he never raced for Ferrari and what he thought about the other racing greats of the era. The revealing interview is interspersed with archive race footage and photos. From the emotional pain of losing the F1 World Championship by a single point to the physical pain of his awful 1962 crash, Moss speaks candidly about a life lived at full speed, including the personal cost of racing and celebrity. The cameras are even allowed inside his London home, and the man reveals which of his more than 450 races he considers the greatest. The DVD features four individual films with each one looking at a particular aspect relating to Moss, Much of the footage was shot during Moss’ racing career and provides an outstanding glimpse into the world of Formula1 in what surely must have been its most dangerous era. In Moss on the Monte, he visits the 1967 MonteCarlo Rally and explains how the sport works with input from greats like Paddy Hopkirk. Moss

- The First Ten Years is a fascinating retrospective charting his career in archive footage from Grand Prix and sportscar racing, including the legendary Le Mans showdowns. Finally, Two Laps of Honour showcases his incredible skills at the Monaco and European GPs of 1961, guiding his Rob Walker Lotus to unlikely wins ahead of the all-conquering Ferraris. There is nothing particularly new on this DVD (which was first released in 2010) but it does provide a wonderful account of one of Britain’s most celebrated racing drivers and some excellent footage from the golden years on motorsport. Well worth watching!

The Jupiter was produced between 1950 and 1954 with about 900 cars in total rolling of the Bradford based production line. The cars featured a 1.5 litre ‘flat-four’ engine which gave lively performance, so it wasn’t long before special-bodied Jupiters were raced and rallied and played their part in making motoring (not just Jowett) history. To reflect that, one chapter in this book deals with specials-builders like Maurice Gomm and John Willment and others who were involved in special-bodied Jupiters and helped restart motor racing after the end of World War Two. Gomm incidentally also designed the chassis for the EMKA Aston Martin Group C cars which raced at Le Mans in the early 1980s. In fact, a good portion of the book’s 205 pages are dedicated to over 60 different coachbuilders from nine countries including Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, France and Australia and of course the UK, and the specials they created. The author has done a superb job of collecting together a wonderful assortment of photographs, and while writing the words can often be challenging, trying to find photographs of some of these incredibly rare cars must have been an extremely difficult task. Unsurprisingly, the vast majority of the images are black and white, with 446 monochrome and 14 colour illustrations in total. Overall, this is a well written book which features some detailed accounts of the Jupiter’s development and the many spinoffs it inspired, along with the people who created them. A ‘must have’ for any Jowett fan, but still a very readable book for any classic motoring enthusiast. Jaguar: XK120 Explored Author: Bernard Viart Price: £110.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 1 9086580 05 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk This incredibly detailed book from Bernard Viart covers both LHD and RHD models and all body styles of the iconic Jaguar XK120 sports car from the 1950s. It could be described as an alternative, or better still, a companion to, the popular ‘Original Jaguar XK’ book which has come to be regarded as the Jaguar restorer’s bible by professional and amateur restorers alike. This book will also serve the same role, but concentrates on just the one model and is therefore somewhat more comprehensive. All the cars are covered, starting with the aluminium-bodied open two seaters and their wood frames, moving on to the production steel-bodied Roadsters (early and late types), then the Fixed Head and Drop Head Coupes. The cars are dissected by means of some 2,500 individual drawings in some 413 plates, most in colour, and almost every part, nut, bolt and washer is shown, and most importantly, where they are located on the car. In addition to the drawings, conventional chapters provide a full description of the car and its production and competition career, plus special bodied examples. The evolution of the XK engine which powered it is also covered in detail. All chapters are profusely illustrated with superb period photographs and literature, many of which have rarely been seen before.

www.cprmag.co.uk Route 66 Lost & Found - Mother Road Ruins & Relics Author: Russell Olsen RRP: £18.00 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 9780760339985 Available From: www.chaters.co.uk For almost as long as I can remember it has been an ambition of mine to drive on America’s famous Route 66 which spanned the United States from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica in California. Much of the original road is gone now, with many of the route’s towns bypassed by a modern interstate road, but in many places, the spirit of Route 66 lives on. This book was compiled to help anyone travelling the ‘Mother Road’ discover those hidden gems along the route which most people pass by without even realising. Shops where time has stood still, abandoned towns, curious statues and bizarre museums, they are all part of the hidden Route 66 experience, and with the help of this book, you should be one step closer to finding them. It is well written and illustrated with wonderfully atmospheric shots that make this a book that’s difficult to put down. This latest edition is in fact a compilation of sorts, as it combines author Russ Olsen’s successful Route 66 Lost & Found volumes 1 and 2 and adds more than 50 new sites along the route which were not included in those two editions. All of the sites featured, more than 200 in all, are re-ordered from Illinois to California to provide a continuous journey along 66. The maps included in the previous two volumes are updated to feature the locations of the new sites included here. And The Revs Keep Rising - Great Drives In Fast Cars Author: Mel Nichols RRP: £18.49 Format: Hardback. ISBN: 978 0 85733 2707 Available From: www.motorbooks.co.uk Interesting one this. Former Car magazine writer Mel Nichols digs out some of his finest literary moments and has bundled them together to create ‘And the Revs Keep Rising: Great Drives in Fast Cars.’ It is a book that should certainly appeal to readers of this magazine, since the main subject matter takes in Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Jaguars and other exotic classic or supercars. The author has fans in high places too. Describing in November 2010 the influence of Mel Nichols on motoring writing, Jeremy Clarkson said: “I still think his story about driving three Lamborghinis from Italy is the best-ever drive story... I m trying to do stuff like that now, only on television.” This book is a collection of Nichols best writings, mostly covering supercars of the 1970s and 1980s, and mostly published in Car magazine at the time when, under Nichols leadership, it was regarded by the industry and enthusiasts as the best motoring magazine in the world. There are 50 highly readable stories in this book which are notable for their panache and nostalgia. Early days in Australia: Holden Monaro GTS 350 125 miles in one hour dead; Ford Falcon GT-HO Phase III down the Hume Highway at 141mph. Formative Italian experiences: the first Lamborghini Countach Monaco to Modena with Bob Wallace; meeting Enzo Ferrari a day at Ferrari, and into the Old Man s lair; Maserati Bora London to Glasgow through the night. German supercars: Porsche 911 Turbo Porsche raises the ante; BMW 3.0CSL skating on the ice to Munich; BMW M1 blitzing the North York Moors; Porsche 959 maxing out at 197mph. More Ferraris: 308GTB Signor, you go more slow, eh? ; 512BB In the clearing stands a Boxer ; 250GTO mine for a week ; 365GTB/4 Daytona romping through Dorset; F40 finding the limit at Fiorano. More Lamborghinis: Espada Modena to London, 900 miles in 11 hours; three Lamborghinis flat-out through France; Countach S at 186mph the straight is running out; Silhouette sad, sweet song of the last Silhouette. And some other marques: Jaguar D-type pipping a Porsche on the M4; Lotus Esprit Turbo carving through the Dales; Audi Sport Quattro S1 flat out through Dyfi forest with Hannu Mikkola; McLaren F1 210mph and rising; Corvette Stingray driving the Targa Florio circuit. You get the idea. It’s kind of ‘Top Gear’ on paper. Unfortunately the pictures accompanying the text are nowhere near as good as the ones that were used originally in the magazines, but the stories have more than stood the test of time and still make great reading.

Be Wise When You Advertise! When you advertise always take steps to guard against identity fraud. Do not place personal details in your adverts. If you are selling a car, remember that there are a lot of unscrupulous people out there who will use every trick in the book to part you from your car or your money. Take sensible precautions. If you are buying a car; make sure you check it thoroughly. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! Never meet a vendor on the street or at service stations. Research the type of car you are buying so you know what to look for. If you are unsure, take an expert along with you.
