here is a stream that meanders through the forest in its own sweet time, in its own sweet way. It’s a thread of water, narrow enough to leap over, modest in the grand scheme of nature and enjoyed by the residents of the forest.
Now imagine this – the stream that meanders in its own sweet way, is now full of hard, dried mud with aluminium cans and rubbish strewn all over. Soon, this beautiful stream complementing the lush green forest will only be a figment of our imagination. The environment is arguably the most important global issue of our time. If we destroy it, we destroy ourselves. Humankind is inescapably dependent on air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat and fuel for warmth and energy. Our technological and industrial practices seriously threaten to degrade or even exhaust these vital natural resources, at the risk of catastrophe for ourselves. Celebrating Earth Day on April 22 is not just about leaving the lights switched off for a couple of hours, it’s to consciously and continuously make a difference. So go on, do something; anything today. You could plant a tree, make a meal with locally-grown vegetables, clean up and separate trash in your neighbourhood. Remember, you don’t have to wait for Earth Day to show your love for the planet we call home. So, get into action and take small steps to preserve our home. We, especially the future generation, deserve a better home!

April is famously known among poets as NaPoWriMo or the National Poetry Writing Month. We got in touch with Spoken Word Poet Melizarani T. Selva, who has performed in Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Budapest, and Malaysia, to pick her brain on poetry in this country.
M
elizarani has been writing poetry since she was six and started doing spoken word five years ago. She writes poetry as a means of delivering messages that she does not know how to express in speech. She published a book of her poems entitled ‘Taboo’ which has made it to the MPH Top 10 Bestseller List. CP: How would you define spoken word? Melizarani: Spoken word is the performance side of poetry and it’s referred to as performance poetry. Spoken word is stage poetry and for a long time, it was the bastard of poetry. Nobody liked it. Over time, it has emerged as more than just a contemporary idea of poetry and we are slowly coming to the fore.
Of
oetry and
erforming Arts
CP: Is NaPoWriMo observed in Malaysia? Melizarani: There are certain Facebook groups that encourage poetry writing and there is the MaPoWriMo which is the Malaysian Poetry Writing month. The problem with spoken word and page poetry is that there is a divide. A lot of the poets who have been writing for the page for so long are afraid to go on stage because they never had to and they are used to a small audience where nobody really critiques or applaud their work. Spoken word is completely different: you’re baring your soul on stage. What I’ve tried to do over the years is that during these kinds of events, I try to bring poets of all backgrounds together and help them realise that they’re all writing poetry. I started ‘If Walls Could Talk’ – it’s a poetry open mic, the only one in KL - where I feature an established poet, an established singer-songwriter, and I have about 10 to 12 open mic-ers who are basically poets who are doing it for the first time. They come, meet and realise the different ways in which they can write their poetry so that it sounds more exciting. NaPoWriMo is once a year. It’s great, it’s fantastic and it’s going to make you write every day throughout the month but we need something consistent and that’s why the platform exists. CP: Are there many spoken word poets in Malaysia? Melizarani: Yes, there are plenty and the community has been around for more than a decade. Spoken word in Malaysia is actually rooted back to the Malay contemporary poetry and theatre scene. You have Usman Awang, for example. It’s the idea of breaking the fourth wall and writing everything in verse and that’s what he did. If you look into the Bahasa poetry scene, the way you would recite a sajak or syair – that’s spoken word, it’s just done in Malay. A syair may have its own tone and backbone which I don’t necessarily agree to but a sajak is a little bit more flowery and robust. In Malaysia, we have a huge number of spoken word talents such as Jamal Raslan, Sheena Baharudin and Elaine Foster. I have been doing spoken word for about five years and I’m actually considered one of the younger talents. CP: Tell us a little bit about ‘Poets in Progress’. Melizarani: Poets in Progress is a chapter under ‘If Walls Could Talk’. When I started this platform I wanted poets to come and share their work and meet other poets without them getting big headed about their work. I wanted to ground the poets and help them understand
that everything that they write, even for me, is still a progression. I don’t teach the ‘Poets in Progress’ workshop but I get other poets to come by. The first time we organised it, we had Australian Slam Poet Champion Zohab Zee Khan and he taught a group of people on the different styles and the different ways of doing poetry. Both ‘If Walls Could Talk’ & ‘Poets in Progress’ run once a month. CP: What’s on your plate at the moment, poetry-wise? Melizarani: Right now, I am editing the KL Spoken Word Anthology. It’s the first anthology for spoken word poets and that’s coming out later this year. One thing I learned from the anthology is that there is a huge demand for poetry in this country both in terms of the people wanting to produce it and the people wanting to consume it. People
“I wanted poets to come and share their work and meet other poets without them getting big headed about their work.”
have a lot to say. A lot of the poems that I’ve received for the anthology is about our country’s politics and everything that we cannot say. I also constantly have this issue of poets who come here to perform coming to check their poems with me and asking me if its seditious as they don’t want to get into trouble. CP: What’s your message to youth who are into poetry but don’t have an avenue for it? Melizarani: Create an avenue. When I was in Taylor’s doing my degree, I wanted to meet other poets so that I could learn from them. I organised my own poetry event at Taylor’s titled Candles & Coffee where I teamed up with Starbucks to provide the venue and the coffee. I posted it up on Facebook and I got poets coming in from different universities. It’s so easy now with social media – there’s no excuse. Create the avenue. Create the opportunity that you think you don’t have. SE

umble and stunning are two things that come to mind when one meets the newly crowned Miss Universe Malaysia Kiran Jassal. A straight A’s student who describes herself as adventurous, thoughtful and friendly, feels that it’s important to enjoy life while attaining your goals. She completed her A-Levels at Kolej Tuanku Ja’afar, Negeri Sembilan and will be pursuing dentistry at the International Medical University after her reign as Miss Universe Malaysia. Having won the title, it goes without saying that Kiran exudes confidence from
How do you think teenagers can become more confident? Embrace your body for what it is as everyone’s different. Don’t compare yourself to others – they’re not you. You’re the best version of yourself and no matter what people say, they don’t know what it’s like to be you. Have confidence in yourself.
If you could go back to your school days and change one thing, what would it be? I was more serious in school and always completed my homework and listened to my teachers. If I could change one thing, I’d take a more backseat approach and be more laidback, relaxed and naughtier once in a while. Don’t be too uptight but take your studies seriously. It’s important to find balance.
How did you deal with bullies when you were a teenager? If I heard things about myself or if I heard people calling me names, I’d tell them how I feel and I would distance myself from them
if it still went on after that. They won’t continue with the bullying if you don’t retaliate and if it doesn’t bother you.
Being a straight A student and a student of classical harmonium for nine years from the age of seven, what time management tips can you share with teenagers? Everyone works differently. For me, I follow a schedule as it keeps me on the right path and keeps me from spending too much time doing one thing while eating up time which I could be spending doing something else. Have a schedule and plan in advance. On the environment
How will you promote saving the environment in your capacity as Miss Universe Malaysia? All of us have unsustainable lifestyles which is evident in the small things that we do like leaving the lights on when not in use and our usage of plastic bags but all of us can make a change. We need to revamp how we look at things as there are many other ways

to save the environment besides carpooling and this is what I aim to show Malaysians.
What steps do you take to conserve the environment? I do not litter at all regardless of whether it’s tissue paper or a soft drink can. Also, I make sure that I take quick showers.
Should water bills be increased to encourage water conservation? If not, how can we teach people to conserve water?
What have you done to reduce your carbon footprint? My entire family uses energy saving lightbulbs at home. We don’t keep the air conditioning at home on at 16°C and we switch it off once the room is cold. Small steps like these go a long way. SE
I feel that a two pronged approach is necessary in this case as people will feel the impact when it comes to money but it may only have a short term effect. To get people to save more

it may be due to 99 other different reasons. The fact is, the heart is not to be blamed as intentions remain pure. It may be hard to ignore the Whatsapp chirps or getting the most heart-wrenching Insta caption for that artistic picture, and the tempting red on Snapchat, but these can wait. Think of it as conditioning. For example, before going to the temple, mosque or church, we prepare ourselves or before meeting grandparents, our stomachs are empty to savour the scrumptious delights prepared with love. Therefore, before meeting the hundreds of lost, lonely, longing people, there is a call for humility. “No, it will not be a waste of time” and “I am helping others and learning in the process” is a good first step. We’re living in a world that strives for sustainability; a form of commitment. Playing a part in a worthy cause (or any cause at all) is not a one-off job— it’s a lifetime duty. The earlier
we accept our responsibilities as humans to humans, the deeper we understand the extra mile that we need to run. “Responsibility” sounds like a drag but it most definitely does not have to be! Involve classmates and siblings, make a day out of it with your family, introduce these causes to groups you belong to and share the responsibility. If time is not on your side, there are websites dedicated to collecting funds and goods for the underfed and underclothed. If you can tell yourself, you have a good life, then you already have it better than 3 billion people who live on less than $2.5 a day! Maybe it takes being surrounded with those who don’t have much at all to trigger the hearts on our sleeves. Munirah calls to mind that these are simply humans who should be served fairly and treated equally. In a routine that’s ever-changing, they expect uniformity and familiarity. They want to forge a relationship with these constantly in their lives— to feel belonged. Munirah was overwhelmed as she recounted the many stories of her homeless friends who left for more blessed lives. Her parting advice, “Don’t treat them differently. These are people who were born at the bottom. Like a baby born a heroin addict. The odds are ever stacked against them.” So put down those phones and tabs just for a little while when you’re in service of others. Because in the end, we don’t know their stories either. We’re here to find out. SE

hat good has come from the transition from Gen X to Gen Y other than Gen Y’s ‘contributions’ to the English Language (“selfie”, “bae” and “baeritto”), many people forget to mention. The millennials are also considered to be the most empathetic and compassionate generation based on research. Feelings aside, the millennials are notorious for not doing anything about it. Here’s what PERTIWI (Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam) chief executive officer Munirah Hamid observed about the Gen Y. “They’re just so caught up with themselves and their selfies”. Gen Y loves to participate in social causes but is always distracted from their social obligations that their focus on the task at hand is never 100%,” she added. PERTIWI is an NGO that has taken on projects like the PERTIWI Soup Kitchen, Kasih PERTIWI, PERTIWI Health Services and the Foster Child Project since 1967. She also said that there is an innate need to tell the world they are doing something noble— which often turns out to be not very noble. “These kids enter the real world and expect to be spoon-fed. If they want gloves, we should get them those gloves. Where to stand, where to wait, who to assist, even to smile”. “It’s a habit picked up from young. “A habit that will never go away unless they experience something positive from this,” she cited, adding that it’s important to know what helping means instead of just taking selfies and documenting their every move. Appalled? Flabbergasted? Boggled? Downright disappointed? Don’t be— laziness is a far cry from hopelessness. It’s easy to forget that there is always room to improve these impressions. This generation may come off that way; possibly the embodiment of misconceived notions. The youth simply find it hard to grow along with their responsibilities or

Beauty Cheat A
When you’re a busy bee at school, there’s nothing wrong with using a few shortcuts. Here are some beauty tips to save you time, money, and make your life a whole lot easier!
Sheet That’ll Make Your Life Easier!
Free Brow
Brush
The next time you replace your mascara (every three to six months to protect your eyes from bacteria), save the wand and run it through soap and water for a free brow spoolie!
SHARP
Shadows
Magic tape is your best friend! Line the tape from the corner of your eyelid to the edge of your eyebrow for a perfect guide. Use your finger or a clean brush to gently blend the harsh edges of eyeshadow to soften the look. Perfection!
Clump-less Lashes
Forever
BY: JQ LEE
Some new mascaras come with a wet and heavy formula. This may weigh your lashes down and cause clumping. A simple tip is to wipe off the excess product on the brush with tissue before application. You’ll get those beautifully separated lashes every time!
22
| CP SCHOOL ED
Just add two to three drops of contact lens solution or eye drops and stir the tube with the wand. Voila, as good as new! Of course, the rule of thumb is not to pump your mascara because it pushes air in and dries out your mascara quickly. Also, if your mascara is too old, trash it because it is not worth saving.
FAST DRYING
Hair
Don’t fancy going out with damp hair and no time to blow-dry? Use paper towels to soak up excess water instead of regular towels. It’s effective and doesn’t frizz your hair up.
Glow EASY
Don’t fret when you’re out of your usual BB cream. Mix 1:1 ratio of foundation and moisturiser for fresh and dewy looking skin. Use a moisturiser that comes with SPF+++ so you can skip applying sunscreen separately to save time. Fabulous!
QUICK FRESH
Hair
Dry shampoo can be expensive. Try using a pinch of corn starch and massage it gently on your scalp until it absorbs most of the oil. If you think that using corn starch is yucky, baby powder works just as well too. It may be a little messy and can make your roots look like you have dandruff if you don’t massage it thoroughly. So take some time to rub it in completely with your fingers.
EVERLASTING contoured
Lips Remember these formulas. Lipstick can double up as a cream blusher; lip balm works great to tame unruly brows; and matte brown eye shadow can be used to fill in those scanty brows and contour your face too. Multitasking your products will help you keep your makeup bag light and save your money too!
Make your lip colour last longer by blotting the first layer with tissue paper then gently dust a light layer of loose or translucent powder over your lips. Finally, add another layer of lipstick with a lip brush for that precise ‘done-up’ up.
DRY NAIL POLISH IN A
Jiffy
Just dip your painted nails into a bowl of ice water and wait until it no longer feels sticky.

any youngsters tend to shy away from hybrid cars due to the higher price tag. Take for example, the difference in price between the Honda Civic and its hybrid counterpart where the difference in the starting price of these two cars is just below RM70,000. In truth, when driven properly, hybrid cars provide savings in the long run in terms of fuel costs largely due to one unavoidable phenomenon when you live in the city: traffic jams. This is simply due to the fact that when not much power is required, the cars system will activate the battery in order to keep the car moving. As many of you ponder on the many choices out there when it comes to getting your brand new set of wheels, check out these hybrid cars.

LIFEHACKS/DIY
Show Me the Light:

emember the glass marbles that you played with when you were little? If you’re still keeping some of them, you could actually use them for an entirely different purpose! In this DIY project, we will guide you through the simple steps of creating an exceptional marble candle holder (which also happens to look like an expensive crystal decoration). It’s super easy to make and serves as a practical way to recycle your old CDs as well as marbles. Be prepared to be blown away by the mesmerising effect it generates in the dark as the light shines through the marbles!
Let’s Get Started! 1.
Grab an old CD or DVD as the base for the candle holder. 2. Begin by gluing marbles in a circle on the CD, staying close to the edge (make sure you apply glue to the points of the marble that actually touch the base as well as the adjoining marble). 3. Once you have gone full circle for the first row, allow it to set well.
1
What you need:
• Glass marbles (feel free to choose between the transparent or coloured types). • Old CD or DVD. • Super glue. • Hot glue gun. • Tealight candle
4.
5. 6. 7.
Now that it is firm, you can go around doing the same process for the second and third rows (make sure each marble of the second layer sit on the gap between the two marbles of the first layer). Continue to stack the marbles until you’ve reached the desired number of layers. After you have finished, allow it to sit and dry for at least three hours. Place a tealight candle inside and enjoy!
2
3
4
Tips
• For the first layer, we applied the marbles with super glue (or UHU glue) in order to set a firm base. • After the first layer, we switched to using hot glue gun. The glue dried almost instantaneously and the project finished up very fast!
You will be surprised with how enchanting it looks since the reflective covering of the CD will amplify the light through the marbles. Try and place all sorts of votive candles inside this holder to add a cosy atmosphere to your home, or even office.

The band’s fifth album will bring you back to your days as a teenager while still managing to be relevant to your life today, especially if you’ve been following their music from the beginning. Besides hit singles ‘I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed’ and ‘Opinion Overload’, tracks to look out for include ‘Kiss Me Like Nobody’s Watching’, ‘Singing In The Rain’, ‘I Refuse’, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be Sad’, and ‘P.S. I Hate You’.
While The Knocks, an electronic music duo consisting of Ben "B-Roc" Ruttner and James "JPatt" Patterson, have come out with EPs and have been around since 2010, ‘55’ is their debut album. Full of familiar names, the album features collaborations with Fetty Wap, Wyclef Jean, Carly Rae Jepsen, Matthew Koma, Magic Man, Alex Newell, POWERS, Phoebe Ryan, Justin Tranter, Walk The Moon, and X Ambassadors. Tracks to look out for include ‘Classic’, ‘Dancing With Myself’, ‘I Wish (My Taylor Swift)’, ‘Cinderella’, and ‘Best For Last’.

The hip hop duo’s second studio album stays true to their style of delivering lyrics that matter. All in all, we’re glad that the duo are still staying true to their sound and not falling into the trend of going mainstream. Besides hit singles ‘Downtown’ and ‘Growing Up’, tracks that stand out in particular are ‘Light Tunnels’, ‘St. Ides’, and ‘The Train’.

This album from Stranger Things, which is their third, was interestingly enough recorded primarily in frontman Max Bloom’s parents’ house. Despite the band’s name, their music is anything but. In fact, the band has been compared by critics to the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, and Sonic Youth. Besides the title track, other tracks to look out for include ‘Cannonball’, ‘Only Silence’, ‘As I Walk Away’, and ‘Down’.

MOVIE REVIEW
R
yan Reynolds as Deadpool truly found his calling in a superhero and it isn’t “green nor animated”. The snarky, witty and surprisingly human villain come hero is a ballpark away from the rest of Marvel’s comic book supers. He takes Tony Stark’s humour to a higher, albeit darker level. Wade Wilson, ex-mercenary living in New York City, does his job and he does it well. Although he only agrees to assignments where the target’s death is deserved, he refused being titled a hero. Bearing a past-life that was messed up - a mother who died of cancer and an abusive father, Wade falls in love with Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), who’s crazy and equally messed-up past, matches his. He decides to put a ring on it right before he is diagnosed with cancer. He takes up an offer by a random dude in a suit, called The Recruiter (Jed Rees) to cure his cancer. Leaving Vanessa, Wade joins a facility to test his fate only to be tortured and mutated by Ajax aka Francis (Ed Skrein) and the main goon, Angel Dust (Gina Carano), into a creature as skillful as he is physically deformed. Successfully wrecking immense havoc at the facility after his mutation and left for dead by Ajax, Deadpool comes back with relentless humour paired with the mercenary in him. Due to his physical appearance, he stays away from Vanessa. After finding Ajax, The X-Men interrupt to bring Deadpool to the X-Mansion but Ajax escapes. While Deadpool recovers from a self-inflicted lost limb, Ajax becomes the hunter. Finding a picture of Vanessa at Weasel’s bar, he kidnaps her and thus begins the
cliché superhero-saves-his-girl, albeit with a whole lot more humour. Deadpool shows up out of nowhere with a badass suit, crazy posters and puny public service announcements and just takes the Internet by storm! So much so singles and couples alike looked forward to spending their Valentine’s Day watching Deadpool! From all the hype that was created, Marvel fans will be proud of the fact that the film lived up to it. It was a joyous occasion, especially for Ryan Reynolds, when it was learned that the studio was as dedicated to making the film exactly like the comics. Now, some may not have appreciated the screenplay. Some even say it was the dialog that saved the movie. When you have a character like Deadpool, there’s heavy pressure of doing his complex personality justice. To break the fourth wall without overdoing it but keep to the authenticity of the comic-book. Let’s face it, the storyline has its clichés. A man falls in love and at the peak of their relationship, realised he’s a dying man, becomes indestructible, has his girl kidnapped and saves the day. Introducing the plot in the present with past flashbacks fits in perfectly well with the intention to smash the barrier between the actor and audience in a way only Deadpool can. We’ve
watched Wolverine get pulverised progressively and Spiderman/Viper progressively struggle with their identity. Imagine watching Captain America, strong and handsome facing the ugly Red Skull then flashback to skinny, scrawny Steve Rogers and German, normal-faced Johann Shmidt but without the good Captain telling you what the heck is going on. Not only did they keep their promise in maintaining Deadpool as wittily sadistic as in the comics but they managed to leverage on his ability to speak to the audience by giving him something to talk about. The producers admit it was a huge risk to have the film Rated R. As a comic, Deadpool attracted a fan base of all ages but limiting the film’s audience could have either been a make or break for the current blockbuster (By the way, it walloped the Matrix first week record sales). What with the F-bombs and prostitutes, it was a gutsy yet necessary move to rate the movie as such. Brutal honesty is trait of the Deadpool creators it just happened to pay off. SE

The well-known director, writer and animator, Makoto Shinkai is about to spread his wings again in August 2016 as he has revealed his next anime feature, named “Your Name”.
M
akoto Shinkai got his start in the industry in 1997 directing the short film “Other Worlds”. His first major breakthrough in the industry was 2002’s “Voices of a Distant Star”, which won various awards. Since his debut 20 years ago, his films have received recognition for the films’ plot - simple yet mature themes and breathtaking visuals. If you still can’t remember him, this might help you - his recent hits, “5 Centimeters Per Second”, which won the Best Animated Feature Film Award at the 2007 Asia Pacific Screen Awards as well as his recent feature film in 2013, “The Garden of Words”. “Your Name” is likely to take our breath away with more stunning visuals and stories dripping with emotions.
It’s a story of miracles and love revolving around Mitsuha and Taki and is set one month after a comet has fallen for the first time in a thousand years in Japan. Mitsuha, a female high school student who lives in a rural town nestled deep in the mountains, is tired of life in the rural town. Her father is the mayor and isn’t at home much, and she lives with her elementary school-aged little sister and her grandmother. Mitsuha has an honest personality, but she doesn’t like the customs of her family’s Shinto shrine, nor does she like her father participating in an election campaign. She laments that she lives in a confined rural town and yearns for the wonderful lifestyle of living in Tokyo. Then there’s Taki, a male high school student who lives in central Tokyo with his friends while working as a part-timer at an Italian restaurant. He also has a strong interest in architecture and fine arts. One day, Mitsuha dreams of herself as a young man. On the other hand, Taki also has a dream where he is a female high school student in a town in the mountains that he has never been to. What is the secret behind their dreams? “I am searching for you, to whom I have never met.” SE

Changes for the better are coming our way, thanks to the fusion of the real and digital worlds where concepts and technical components are brought together.
T
he “Internet of Things” or IoT in short, was originally coined by an engineer named Kevin Ashton in 1999. It is a term that describes a world in which physical devices or “things” are connected to the Internet. These devices can be synchronised and controlled by users from a single app; creating a new ecosystem of smart, interconnected devices. As such, IoT creates opportunities for more direct integration between the physical world and computerbased systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit. Although the concept was mentioned in 1999, the Internet of Things has been in development for decades. The first Internet appliance, for example, was a Coke machine at Carnegie Mellon University in the early 1980s. The programmers could connect the machine over the Internet, check the status of the machine and determine whether or not there would be a cold drink awaiting them, should they decide to make the trip down to the machine. In short, it
With IoT, many changes are coming to our everyday lives. Below are a few examples:
Monitoring your health
When a prescription is running low, an appointment will be made with your physician through connected RX bottles. Doctors will be kept informed with how often and when their patients are taking their medicine. Those with ongoing health issues will be able to have their blood pressure and sugar levels monitored remotely.
Energy consumption
means intelligence is installed into devices around us so that they can communicate with us to better assist or improve our lives. IoT is different from the current usage model of internet in the way that the “things” are designed to be able to collect the desired data on its own and transfer data over a network to the users without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. These “things” are equipped with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data. IoT is expected to offer advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes
High-energy consumption household appliances will adjust based on dynamic price signals to lower your electric bill. Thermostats and lighting will learn your habits to create the optimal setting based on your daily life, such as turning to your ideal temperature just before you arrive home. These gadgets will also sense when no one is in the house and turn off automatically to reduce wastes and costs.
Driving and traffic jams
Driving will get a lot safer. Traffic lights will be able to adjust to real-time traffic conditions such as when an emergency vehicle is approaching. Road sensors will make changes to the speed limit based on weather and accidents, while also communicating directly to car dashboards about unsafe conditions (e.g. “Slow down. The turn-in at 500m is slippery”). In addition, data from roadside sensors could be used to analyse traffic patterns around the city and adjust traffic light operations to minimise or perhaps eliminate traffic jams.
Grocery lists
Smart refrigerators will sense when you are running low on staples such as eggs or milk and will automatically update your grocery list. Stores will push reminders to add items to your list when it predicts you are about to run out based on your historical purchasing behaviour and average buying trends. When you are walking through the store, reminders will get pushed to you to ensure you never have to make that dreaded second trip.
Knowing where everything is, all the time
IoT has the potential to make the workplace life and business processes much more productive and efficient. One significant way IoT will increase productivity and efficiency is by making location tracking much simpler and seamless. As currently done in hospitals, Internet-connected equipment and devices will be all geographically tagged, which will save worker’s time hunting things down and save money by reducing the loss rate. Companies can track every aspect of their business, from managing inventory and fulfilling orders as quickly as possible to locating and deploying field service staff. Tools and factories and vehicles will all be connected and reporting their locations.

beyond machine-to-machine communications (M2M) and covers a variety of protocols, domains and applications. In other words, IoT is the convergence of wireless technologies, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), the internet and artificial intelligence. Not far from now, IoT will be the world’s most massive device. IoT is a trillion dollar industry. It has been estimated that there will be 50 billion digital devices by 2020, which will dwarf the mobile industry. There are also predictions that the number of cars connected to the Internet worldwide will grow more than six fold to 152 million in 2020 from 23 million in 2013. It has been said that by 2020, there will be over 100 million Internet connected wireless light bulbs and lamps worldwide up from 2.4 million in 2013. GE estimates that IoT has the potential to add US$10 trillion (RM42.5 trillion) to US$15 trillion (RM64 trillion) to global GDP over the next 20 years while Cisco forecasts that the economic value created by the IoT in 2020 will increase to US$19 trillion (RM81 trillion). However, there are a few challenges. Deploying IoT apps on a global scale, which means getting thousands or even millions of
users simultaneously on the Internet, is a very challenging task. It is a whole other ball game as compared to what we are using today and there is need for a new type of network for connecting these IoT devices. It is important to immediately know when an IoT device drops off the network and goes offline. When the device comes back online, we need to know that as well. Detection of IoT devices, which is also a big challenge, gives an exact, up to the second state of all devices on a network so that we are able to monitor our IoT devices and fix any problems that may arise with the network. Next challenge is the power constraints of the devices. As these “things tend to get smaller and potentially wearable, even connecting to batteries will not be desirable. It is essential to re-design these devices to consume less power as well as to get their power through
alternative means such as wireless charging at a distance, energy harvesting or solar. No matter how great it sounds and how it could impact and improve lives, security and protection of data is the major concern. According to research from Hewlett Packard, 80% of IoT devices are vulnerable to data theft. IoT devices are poised to become more pervasive in our lives than mobile phones and will have access to the most sensitive personal data such as identification numbers and banking information. Currently, smart phones are collecting some form of personal information such as name, address, date of birth, health information, and even credit card numbers. Those concerns are multiplied when you add in cloud services and mobile applications that work alongside the devices in IoT. This is because many devices are transmitting this information unencrypted on their home network. But users are not taking enough measures to protect and prevent their data. SE

expected to get 2 As and a B, at least. I’d been so blase about the results, I ignored the anxious throng who gathered outside the programme coordinator’s office for their results at mid noon and breezed into the cafeteria, mentally making plans for the first university term. The real results were a tremendous shock. Actually, the overriding emotion was shame that I’d disappointed so many people; my parents, my teachers and myself. And shame that it was my own fault. I’d been lazy. My dad wanted answers. My Mother gave me what I called the ‘sideview look’. In the absence of any easy ones, I just wanted to run away to any place where no one knew me! As things worked out, it wasn’t the end of the world. I appealed the marking, expecting and getting no change. I had a re-think about the future, deciding if I really wanted to go for my degree . I did. So I went back into office and filled out the form to re-sit the exams, put my head down and re-sat the lot. And got the grades I needed- albeit one year behind! That was the hardest weekend for me, time seemed to have stood still-my mother was still giving me that ‘side-view’ look yet I still had my baby sisters on my side - they still spoke to me because they had no clue what my A levels marks were! If not for anything I learnt humility and I also learnt one
need not be a rocket scientist to study at A Levels. Well, I gained some other things. I got an extra year at home with my baby sisters, a time that was irreplaceable. I learned I wasn’t as clever as I thought I was, and there’s no substitute for hard work. And I realised that you can build success from failure, if you’ve got a good friend willing to kick your backside hard enough. This is one article in which I will need to say – work backwards!! Know the rules and then we can contemplate about breaking them – How many A Levels students actually know the syllabus and use

that as a steering to work towards the exam? Knowing what you will be tested on rather than to drag yourself into lectures can help you in more ways than one. Students in general also need to look at pacing themselves. A levels is not a regurgitation of facts or examples straight from the text – understanding and then applying it to the exam question is of utmost importance so don’t be a boiled egg because you need to ‘un-learn’ the way you studied for your form 5 or 6 and be able to look at this with a fresh mind. An analytical mind! Have you tried teaching your friend or family on the topics you learnt in your lectures? Have you tried forming a study group where you meet up at the least twice a week to discuss topics? Well you should as it helps
greatly in your understanding of the subject. Revising for the A Levels exam should not be just about going for revision classes - you will need to revise general exam technique. This helps with controlling your mind from wandering off during exams and help you put your answers in perspective plus minimise time wastage. SE

Why do we think so differently about the same object or subject? This got me exploring the different thinking patterns in all of us, especially the creative thinkers. We have often heard of the left brainers vs the right brainers… but here’s taking it one step further. As I explored the thinking patterns of creative minds I found a few traits that were very interesting… I will discuss four major areas in particular.

DELIBERATE
TIP
The Deliberators are very goal orientated. They are very focused and are good time managers.
Use them to head your group projects. They are fantastic time-keepers.
EMOTIONAL
TIP
This group of people is very affected by their personal feelings and emotions and they are not easily persuaded to change.
They will give you good personal insights about your products and services and add colourful suggestions to them
SPONTANEOUS
TIP
Depending very much on intuition this group of thinkers are very random and spontaneous. They are sometimes known to have short attention spans.
Fantastic to have in a brainstorm session. They will give you endless suggestions or ideas to take the discussion further.
COGNITIVE
TIP
Good at problem solving with great language and comprehension skills they are often focused and rationale.
Logical and rational, they are perfect to troubleshoot with.
When it comes to creative thinkers, they are often made up of at least two of these traits. For instance, Steve Jobs falls into the Spontaneous and Cognitive categories, showing his strength as a CONNECTOR. He did not invent computers however he saw through consumer needs and introduced us all to the beautiful world of personal computing with APPLE. It is very important to recognise which category we fall into as it helps us develop our thinking further. Besides having a better understanding of how we make decisions, this also gives us a clearer indication to the types of careers we may want to get into. If you fall into the categories of Emotional and Spontaneous, you should really consider going into the fields of art and design.
