Happy Mother’s Day!
have always believed Mother’s Day should be everyday! Bringing up a child and helping him or her grow, is the essence of motherhood. It is a challenge in itself, as she has to go through countless hardships in the process. We celebrate Mother’s Day to remember and acknowledge the everlasting bond of love and affection between a mother and child.
While this is the most natural thing to do, we find that kids these days are having trouble expressing their feelings and showing their love to their parents and vice versa. Is this becoming a norm? Read all about it on page 18. Also check out the Arts and Culture on page 10 which talks about transracial parenting. It may not be as simple as it sounds, as parents and children go through intense emotions to belong and to be part of the family.

Emma Watson
Since graduating Hogwarts of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Brown University), Emma Watson has been busy advocating gender equality. In July 2014, she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and launched the HeForShe Campaign. With an empowering speech (which was an internet sensation), Emma extended a formal invitation to men to actively take part in the movement for gender. Her speech was so powerful till Malala Yousafzai told the young actresshumanitarian that she had decided to call herself a feminist.
Ben Affleck is channelling his inner superman outside of the Hollywood scene by working tirelessly to change the lives of the less fortunate in Eastern Congo through an initiative he founded- the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI). Citizens in Eastern Congo have been given a chance at education and their businesses have started to pick up. Instead of solving problems using a big fat cheque, Ben Affleck believes that change is made “brick by brick” and, I quote “a life lived for yourself is not much of a life.”

HOPE FOSTERING
T
he blame game continues as the controversial issue of racism is getting way beyond our control and no one is taking a firm stand in ending this absurdly ongoing topic because let’s face it, it’s killing us. We can’t wait for another Malala Yousafzai to shine the light on such important yet disregarded matter. Transracial parents are one of the victims taking the bullets out of the blossoming hatred we have for each other - and this simply has to stop. As if parenthood isn’t tears inducing enough, the added pressure of becoming parents to a child of different race in this judgmental world might be unbearable for some if not all. Much like its name, transracial parenting is taking the responsibility of being deliberate parents to child with race that is different from them, often through adoptions. This noble act is becoming a du jour amongst hopeful parents unable to have their own life’s miracle.
TAKING A LEAP OF FAITH It’s a tough job. So why take the chance to begin with? One of the famous transracial parents are the Jolie-Pitt pair who adopted four out six of their children from different parts of the world. In an interview, Jolie said that she had a feeling her son was somewhere in the country, Cambodia, during her visit as goodwill ambassador. Other celebrities such as Katherine Heigl and Sandra Bullock followed suit when both welcomed a new family member through transracial adoption. Connie Wong, a kindergarten teacher who is also a Buddhist, adopted six Muslim children out of social obligations and the goodness of her heart. Raising a culturally proficient kids can be challenging as there is no one guide to help you through it. A lot of people do not consider the parenting aspect when applying for interracial adoption. They are more concerned on getting a baby. Nevertheless, nobody can argue that it takes a lot of courage to welcome someone that is culturally different from who we are.
TRIALS & TRIBULATIONS Being a transracial parent is a
lifelong commitment that requires one to fully dedicate themselves in preserving the child’s heritage while introducing their own. They can’t run from the feeling of being helpless given the fact that a child’s fate is in their hands and how they mold them will make all the difference. That is a heavy burden to put on someone’s shoulder especially when they are still trying to figure out the architecture of their new life. The adopted child does not have the chance to learn of their birth culture through everyday life as any normal family. Inter-racial families will also have to get used to being a stand out in the crowd and handling harsh criticisms coming their way. Furthermore, the child might struggle with identity crisis as they get older and parents will have to be ready to answer questions that might get them off guard. Many agree that no books can truly help in overcoming the trials but experience, patience and a little help from the people around them is a step to making it right.
The Other Side of the Coin Having a child itself can bring endless joy to life but one might argue raising a child with different heritage can add more colour to it. A single approach won’t be enough to create harmonisation within inter-racial family and this will drive parents
to be creative by forcing them out of their comfort zone. By seeing the world with wider perspective, they view everything with more clarity. A child raised in this environment will have lesser concern over adoption insecurities since they will be aware of it at a much younger age and if taught right, they can be unique individuals with vast mind.
Tips for Parents The only thing to do is to make the best out of everything and consider each challenge a blessing since not many have the opportunity of uniting culturally different people under one roof. Communication is the key. Create environment that allow the child to feel safe in sharing their feelings and thoughts with family members. Once a strong foundation is established, it will be much easier to overcome difficulties when bridging the cultural gap. Another point that needs to be emphasised is the significance of instilling racial pride in the child to avoid self-hatred and confusion in figuring out who they are. Additionally, befriend people with the same race as your child so that they are not totally cut off from their community and they have a role model to refer to when a culture-related questions arise. One extra tip is to personalise family traditions to ensure constant stability. However, at the end of day the first step is to educate yourself before making this decision. SE

Father-Son Unconventional Communication Mailing is a dying art form. The suspense of a longawaited mail or the surprise of receiving a mail without the bill falling out the envelope are communication ecstasies long lost. Once in a while, however, the curiosity rekindles and a dad may randomly send his son a mail, like in the case of Reddit user blooper2112. He
received a chunky package mail addressed to him and oh, did his excitement peak! When he opened it, he found a letter from his dad, a few dollars and…an axe? Apparently, his dad was curious to find out if he could send an axe through the mail. Blooper snapped a picture of his thoughtful gift and posted it online captioned “I don’t
always get packages from my father but when I do….” The million dollar question, why did his father need to know?
People can get jaded with the rat-race of life and sometimes, they manage to pick up the guts to switch things up. Dwayne Molock, stage name ‘Moshow’, switched it up a tad bit too much. “I grew up in the projects, so I was a rapping gangster stuff and pretending a life that I didn’t really live.” Realising he was living a lie, he stopped rapping about it. Inspiration clawed him in the face in the form of his friend’s sphynx cat. Moshow clicked with the feline and said how the sphynx appealed to him most because of their similarities — agility, quirkiness and lack of hair. He now dates his friend and owns 4 sphynxes. He’s got a few singles up too! Check out “Love Your Cats!”, “Cats and Christmas” and our personal favourite “Cat World”. The videography is superb.

Live and Let the Dead Attend Their Own Funeral Puerto Ricans, though predominantly Catholic, adopt influences from Africa and Latin America when it comes to the traditional ceremonies— preventing them from being traditional whatsoever. Carlos M. Cabrera Merchado looked up to the Argentinian Revolutionary, Che Guevara. Before he died, he wanted to play dress up one last time after his death and who did he ask to dress as? You guessed it, Che Guevara. The queerness didn’t stop there. At his wake, where his close friends and family were very seriously praying for his soul, Carlos was displayed at the park he had spent most of his time— his body was embalmed and posed cross-legged, bowed and with a cigar in his hand. He definitely left this world in style.

uraini Mohd Noor, or better known as Tuti, became a household name when she became the first person of Malay ethnicity to qualify for Asia’s Next Top Model (AsNTM). As a participant of AsNTM’s fourth cycle, she admits that the competition is not easy and it gets tougher by the day. “After the makeover episode all of us felt that the competition was getting tough because some of the girls went from long hair to really short hair, so features such as strong cheekbones become prominent,” she shared. Having studied library science, this model says she would have been a librarian if she was not a model - which started when she was scouted by a senior in university. “I didn’t really know anything about modelling at first. When I began my studies at UiTM, I got scouted out by a senior of mine and I decided to give a shot. We started out with a test shoot and from there I got a call from a designer to book me for jobs and shows.” Citing former Malaysian supermodel Tengku Azura as her role model, Tuti advised youth who aspire to be a model to understand what it takes to be one instead of self-proclaiming that one is a model without being seen on runways or ad campaigns.
“You need to have certain requirements like the height, the features or even have a weird yet exotic look. For me, if you have what it takes then refer to someone and ask for approval,” she said.
“Learn about your body. Once you know your body, you’ll know what suits you. The opinions of others don’t matter.” Tuti also offers some words of wisdom for those of you who are in your formative years and are conscious about your bodies. “Learn about your body. Once you know your body, you’ll know what suits you. The opinions of others don’t matter. If you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing, then why do you even care? Learn to dress for your body type.” For those of you who are wondering what a model like Tuti looks for in a life partner, “Someone who can just play along with me and how I am – someone who isn’t too uptight.” Edgy but friendly at the same time, Tuti provides some tips and tricks when posing for pictures alone.

that do not necessarily involve “I love you” or physical love. When affection for your parents get lumped into the “awkward feelings” category, it will become hard for children to receive love as well. Attempts of affection by parents are often diluted by standoffish reactions and somewhat-cold responses from children until they decide to give up trying. Even when children truly need some TLC, they struggle to ask for it because they feel “unworthy” due to years of giving the cold shoulder. In reality, children crave connection and attention like we crave chocolates- so yes, the need is real. After all, we humans are social beings. Yet because of this aversion to intimacy which has snowballed over the years, families struggle to create that connection and the children affected are often disconnected emotionally, cynical and described as being somewhat cold. According to Taylor’s University, Lakeside Campus Head of Counselling and Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) & Health Services Centre (HSC) Marian E. Arumugam, culture and belief has influenced the way many families portray love to one another. In Asia, most parents use an authoritative style of parenting which revolves around the pillars of respect for elders, reasoning, discipline and guidance. Don’t confuse authoritative parenting for a totalitarianmilitary type family which is void of affection and warmth. Plenty of families that use authoritative parenting methods are warm and loving. Love manifests in different ways,
whilst some show it through bear-hugs and kisses, others may show it by sweating blood and tears in order to give their family a comfortable life. However, the definition of “love” and the lines of affection may be blurred- many families claim they love each other but struggle to manifest that said love physically, especially in public. Asian parents also tend to be less empathetic towards their children- not because they don’t love them but because they want them to build emotional resilience and strength. When we reach a certain age, phrases like “Aw are you okay? Everything will be all right sayang” followed by kisses and comforting pats are replaced with the hard truth “Pull yourself together, don’t wallow in self-pity”- all with the intention of toughening up their children to face the brutal real world. It is moments such as these where children feel like a rug has been pulled from beneath them and they become less and less confident in expressing or requesting for affection. The practice of inhibiting emotions and self-control lead to a collective struggle of children unable to fully express their feelings to not only their parents but friends as well. This is sad because now, there are plenty of children who say “Yes, I do love my parents” but when you ask them why, they furrow their brows and look like they’re trying to solve the Riemann hypothesis and at the end of the day they reply, “Because they’re my parents.” Or children grow up surrounded by many acquaintances but no true friends because they’ve never truly opened up to those around them.
What should you do if you feel emotionally detached from your parents? •

ove our parents. It’s such a basic concept; you would think that it’s ingrained in every child since the day they’re born. Yet surprisingly, quite a number of children nowadays struggle to show affection to their parents and cases of parents being abused at the hands of their own children are becoming more and more common. The question is, why? According to Global Times, parents are left bewildered and “shocked” when their children tell them “I love you” over the phone. Entering the teen years is always a big and often difficult transition. It’s like getting inducted into the long awaited “cool club” thus they feel the need to carry themselves in a different manner in order to seem more grown up and fit into a society notorious for critical opinions and judgmental views. Feeling the pressure of such scrutiny, children often reject PDA (public displays of affection) from their parents because it’s stereotyped as “childish” and “embarrassing”. Instead of seeking guidance from parents, problems and feelings are often kept a secret because teens often claim “they (parents) wouldn’t understand”. As a result, this can often lead to a rift between children and parents that will only grow over time. Both parties become less intimate and slowly but surely, they lose the confidence to express love with the ease they once did when they were younger and be free from those psychological “walls” we put over time. Many children end up feeling uncomfortable and forceful when showing affection to their parents while some avoid it altogether and choose to express it in different roundabout ways

The five pillars to child development: The development of these five aspects in a child till they become a young adult is the responsibility of every parent. They can easily be remembered by the unfortunate acronym “PILES” (not the haemorrhoids kind)
Intellectual development covers a wide range of areas from memory to attention span to visual-motor skills.
“P” for Physical Development: This includes development of gross motor skills (movements of large muscles), fine motor skills (movement of small muscles), coordination and kinaesthetic feedback.
“L” for Linguistic Development: This refers to language and communication skills. It can be broken into sub-divisions such as receptive language which is the ability to understand a language, expressive language which is the ability to use a language, self-talk ability, reasoning and creative thinking.
“I” for Intellectual Development: This relates to the general level of intelligence of a child that links to the overall ability.
“E” for Emotional Development: Probably the most complex and important aspect in child development. This includes

tolerance, anger management, intrapersonal intelligence (understanding your own attitudes and emotions), impulse control and inter-personal awareness (understanding attitudes and emotions of others). “S” for Social Development: This ties in closely with emotional development as it determines how well you get along with your family and friends. This includes the ability to co-operate, collaboration skills, “turn-taking-knowing” which is to know when to do something or when not to.
WELLNESS
MAY 2016
T
he next time you rush out in the morning without eating anything, think about this: Skipping breakfast could cause you to overeat. Research has shown that skipping breakfast will result in you feeling hungrier later in the day, which may result in binging on snacks. Filling up on breakfast however, will give you better energy, concentration and in the long run, increase your productivity. So we’ve established that eating breakfast is good. But what makes an ideal breakfast? First of all, it should consist of no more than five grams of sugar. Consuming too much sugar in the morning will make you feel sleepy later on in the day. Next, an ideal breakfast should contain numerous healthy foods that provide fibre, protein and complex carbohydrates that is sufficient to keep you fuelled until lunch. Don’t worry, there are plenty of healthy breakfast options! Here are some healthy, nutritious, delicious and energypacked recommendations you can start your day with.
Oatmeal It takes you about 15 minutes to have a bowl of hearty oatmeal to keep you satisfied and to help you lower your cholesterol level.
However, you’ll have to eat this on a regular basis in order for it to take effect. Also, just to be clear, when we say oatmeal, we mean plain oatmeal. Say no to instant and flavoured oatmeal. Of course, you can still add flavour by using natural ingredients such as fruits, honey, nuts, or even cinnamon.
Yogurt Yogurt is loaded with calcium, protein, vitamin D and beneficial bacteria that is good for your health. You can also add some nutritious ingredients like fresh fruits and nuts to give it some sweetness and flavour. It’s a tasty yet healthy way to start your day!
Eggs Eggs are an “eggspecially” good choice for breakfast. They are a good source of protein and vitamin D. Also, eggs are low in calories and provide a great source of energy to fuel your day! They’re also amazingly flexible as you can have them scrambled, hardboiled, poached, pan fried or steamed. Just make sure you use olive oil if you’re frying
them. However, if you are worried about your cholesterol, you may want to limit yourself to two eggs – one with the yolk, and another without.
Fruits and Vegetables There’s really no need to emphasise just how important fruits and vegetables are when it comes to your well-being. They’re an important source of nutrients, fibre, minerals, antioxidants, and so much more. If you like, you could blend your favourite fruits together to create your very own blend of “power” juice every morning!
Whole-Wheat Breads and Cereal When it comes to bread and cereal, it’s best to stick with bread made from whole wheat and cereal that uses whole grains. They provide a bunch of essential nutrients and are also high in fibre. Do take note of the amount of sugar in your cereal! There should be no more than 10 grams of sugar per serving. In short, stop skipping breakfast from now on! It is the most vital meal of the day. A healthy breakfast tastes great and gives you a positive start to your day. You’ll also have more energy for your morning classes and be able to concentrate better. SE

LIFEHACKS/DIY
Totally Tote
MAY 2016
A
re you looking to re-purpose last season’s T-shirts, which are probably now left unloved in your wardrobe? Take a look at our DIY project this month to find simple steps on how to turn an old T-shirt into an eco-friendly (and beautiful!) tote bag in just 15 minutes. This is a clever project that costs almost nothing to create; a sewing machine isn’t even needed (amazing, right?). With just an old T-shirt, some fast cutting and of course, a little bit of patience, you’ll be able to turn rags into...bags.
What you will need: • Heavy-weight cotton T-shirt • Sharp scissors • Measuring Tape • Washable marker (optional) • Beads with larger holes (try Daiso)
1 2 3 4
LET’S GET STARTED Choose an old T-shirt and lay it flat on a table. Use scissors to cut and remove the sleeves on both sides (roughly an inch past the seam will do). If you are particular about getting both sides to stay identical, you can fold the T-shirt in half and then cut both sleeves at once.
Position a medium-size bowl (you can basically replace it with any rounded object, we used a cake base) about halfway over the neck hole. Using a marker pen, trace along the edge of the bowl. Cut along the outline, making sure to go through the front and back of the shirt in order to create an opening for the bag that’s larger than what the neck hole allows. Next, it’s the fringe part of your bag. Turn your shirt inside out as we will be tracing a lot of dots on it. For the width between each fringe, we dotted half inch marks across the bottom of the shirt.
Similarly, by using the measurement tape, determine how deep you want the bag to be and trace a few dots or draw a vertical line across the bottom of the shirt (we used six inches). Keep in mind that depending on the fabric used, your tote is likely to stretch and become longer when it’s filled with stuff.

5 6 7
Now that we have traced out the guidelines, grab your scissors and cut slits from the bottom of the shirt up to the line marking the bottom of your bag. You’ll want to cut both the front and back layers together because they need to match up for the next step.
This is going to look really complicated, but it’s not! We promise. Keep the slits lined up and starting with one end, give the first pair a couple of tucks and then start knotting the top to the bottom by tying a set of slits together. Do double the knots to create a secure base for your bag. Repeat that until you have completed the entire row. When you are done, grab a handful of these freshly tied-up fringes and give them a couple more tugs. Lift up your shirt, and you should get a similar result as seen in the picture on the far right. Notice the sturdy design on the base of your bag.
8
Turn your new T-shirt tote inside out again, and you’re ready to go!
ANOTHER FUN VARIATION... 1.
2.
3. 4.
If you are opting for a more boho and chic design, you can keep the fringes out instead of tucking them in. During step six, rather than solely tying down the knots, we attempted to decorate them with silver beads! Taking the first pair of slit, focus on the end by twisting them together while threading them through the bead hole. Pull the bead all the way to the top and tie a double knot. For the beading part, we alternate between a silver bead and then a no bead pattern and repeat it until we are done with the entire row. Now carry your goodies in your own stylish tote!
Tips • Pick a T-shirt with a thicker fabric as it will create a sturdier bag. • For tying the knots, pick up the two ends and tie the left over right, and then the right over left. • Apply minimal force while stretching out the fringes.
Did you know? Plastic shopping bags are typically used for less than 30 minutes and only 1% of them are recycled? It’s a scary statistic but we can all do small things to help our earth! This is a great alternative from buying “green” shopping bags and it is much more fashionable and durable. There you go, appearance and practicality in a tote.

Us and the Night | 3 Doors Down
Telluric
Having released their last studio album in 2011, Us and the Night, the band’s sixth studio album, marks their longest gap between albums. The album starts off on high energy with youth anthem ‘The Broken’ before going to hit single ‘In The Dark’, which peaked at number two on Billboard’s US Mainstream Rock chart. Tracks to look out for include ‘Still Alive’, ‘Living In Your Hell’, ‘Pieces Of Me’, and title track ‘Us And the Night’.
Chill is one word that comes to mind when one puts on this debut studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Matt Corby. Having immersed himself in the various aspects of recording an album after burying his original debut album which was recorded 2 years ago, we must say that his hard work certainly has paid off. Our favourites in this album are ‘Monday’, ‘Do you No Harm’, ‘Why Dream’, and ‘Good to Be Alone’.
All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend
After Party | Adore Delano
| Aurora
All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend is Norwegian singer Aurora’s debut album who started writing songs from the age of 10. If you feel like she sounds familiar, that’s probably because tracks ‘Under Stars’ and ‘Runaway’ were released followed by breakthrough track ‘Running With The Wolves’ prior to the release of the album. On this album look out for ‘Conqueror’, ‘Winter Bird’, ‘Home’ and ‘Half the World Away’.

This is the second studio album from American singer-songwriter Adore Delano. An alumnus of American Idol and RuPaul’s Drag Race, Delano manages to stay true to the name of the album in terms of the music. Having said that, this is definitely not something you would want to put on when your parents are within earshot. Look out for ‘Dynamite’, ‘Better Than The Movies’, and ‘I Can’t Love You’.
ANIME
MAY 2016
1. 1. BUNNY DROP Who wouldn’t want to take care of their late grandfather’s illegitimate daughter? Yes, you read that right; grandfather’s daughter. The family tree just got messier for Daikichi’s family when the most prized inheritance left behind by his grandfather is a six year old Rin Kaga. Being a workaholic single man, taking care of a child is not in his plan at all but his empathetic heart has spoken, thus he’s now a single father who does not know the first thing about handling a little girl. These 11 episodes of emotional rollercoaster will make and break you in all the right way. Aside from being a rare A+ anime, you should definitely watch it, as it will open your eyes to the beauty and heartache of parenthood.
2.
s t n e Parreciation
App
At one point in life, we fail to remember the adversity of parenthood; when a disagreement arises at dinner table or when our parents simply forget to bank in our pocket money. At those moments, it is difficult to recall the sacrifices they make to raise us. Until the day your own child is in your arm, there’s no way of truly knowing the hardship, so this list of anime will function as a little reminder.
2. SHOWA MONOGATARI
3. AISHITERUZE BABY
If simplicity is what you’re looking for, Showa Monogatari should be on your list. This anime proves that parenting is pretty much the same in 1960s. Originally a movie released in 2011, this anime was later turned into a TV series. The story revolves around Yamazaki family that struggles with typical family disagreement on daily basis; over protective dad, rebellious daughter and the list goes on. However, it’s simple, yet relatable. The element that adds a little bit of colour in this anime is the iconic old school settings that took place in 1964 which was a monumental year for Japan, as they will be hosting the Summer Olympics and re-establish their image to the world for the first time since WWII. So for those curious of what the land of the rising sun looks like 50 years ago, do check it out in
Good looking, popular and humourous. As a teenage boy, Kippei has everything going for him and life never felt so easy. Drown in selflove, the irresponsible playboy finds himself caught in between making lunchboxes and tending to his niece who was abandoned by her mum. This manga based anime has been the talk of the town in the anime community. Many expected the anime to be a classic food for moppets but anime creators are famous for throwing us off the cliff when it comes to expectation. Instead, Aishiteruze Baby turned out to be a heartfelt shoujo drama that tackles some of the world’s silently kept issues in a light hearted manner. On lazy weekends, plop on the couch with your family and turn on this anime. Who knows, you might learn a thing or two from these characters. You’ll laugh and then cry; or probably both at the same time. It sounds pretty promising to me.
Showa Monogatari!

4. TOKYO GODFATHERS (MOVIE) From the creation of the late Satoshi Kon who was a respected animator and manga artist in the scene, comes a touching story of Tokyo Godfathers. Famous for his admirable understanding of humanity, the characters portrayal in this one and half hour movie was done brilliantly. This story took place during the most exciting holiday of the year; Christmas. Three homeless misfits are lost in the face of another life’s challenge when they found an abandoned baby. Along the journey of searching for the baby’s parents, these characters will discover more about life and most importantly, about who they are individually. If you need to get away from the action, fantasy or romance genre anime and find one to clean your soul for one day, this one fit the bill.

oy, what are you doing with your computer? Why are you still playing computer games? Go and do your homework now. No homework? Go back to your room and start your revision.” “Girl, still watching drama series? I told you many times already, go and prepare for your exam.” Does it sound familiar to you? Does it happen to you when you just want to take a break, want to do something that is not related to academics? Although these questions seemed annoying and unpleasant to us, we cannot deny the good motives behind them - the care and love, the concern and worries, the expectation and the hope of seeing us to be successful in life. Because only those who love us, will discipline us and usually discipline comes with a painful process. However, does it mean that computer games and drama series, or electronic entertainment in general, is a bad thing to do? If it is true, why are there so many forms of such entertainment available in the market? Why do some government bodies and tertiary education institutions endorse and promote programmes related to electronic entertainment? To understand this dilemma better, let us look back at the history of human
development. Most of them, at their ages of between 40 and 50 currently, were born in 1960s and 1970s. During their first 20 to 30 years of their lives, the main economy contributors in Malaysia were from the sectors of agriculture such as rice harvesting and rubber tapping, and manufacturing such as in the industries of electronics, electrical machinery and appliance, and steel and metal production. Some of them might be blessed with higher education which allowed them to work as white collars. Across these various sectors of jobs and careers, a similarity can be found; they never sat at home doing “nothing” in order to earn their livings. Even if they were at home, they were most probably studying to improve themselves, with the hope to obtain a better job or career upon graduation. Besides, during
NEGATIVE
POSITIVE
Table 1: The Positive and Negative Effects of Video Games
their time, computer was not commonly available in every household due to the high production cost and limited computational resources. Asking about Internet? Internet was like a man-controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air aeroplane before December 17, 1903, which was not real and beyond their imagination. To most of them then, higher education with flying colours in the exams would lead to professional careers such as medical doctors, lawyers, engineers and accountants, which had nothing to do with computer technology. With these professional jobs, they were able to accommodate to household and personal living expenses. To get these jobs, they spent numerous days and nights to study, to do revision, to search for extra reading resources and the list goes on. At least, with these understandings, it is not hard to acknowledge the good intention of our parents when they urge us for study. “Time for entertainment or doing nothing at home? No way!” “But I feel good when playing computer games or watching movie.” It is unwise to deny our feelings. We shouldn’t reject what we feel,
being happy or sad, being enjoyable or stressed, but “Should we do it? Where and when should we do it?” are something that we need to think and decide diligently. For example, the typical society perceives playing computer games as an act of wasting time and brings no benefits to the players. In contrary, some researches and studies show the opposite. According to OnlineUniversities.com, it summarises both the positive and negative effects of video game to its players. Parts of the findings are shown in Table 1 and Figure 1. Therefore, from some of these findings, it is clearly stated that playing video games does bring both benefits and weaknesses to its players. In fact, in many other cases such as driving a car or using a knife, if we use it or practice it with a correct behaviour, they are beneficial and useful to us. Otherwise, it may bring harm to us and the society. Similar understandings go to electronic
FIGURE 1 entertainment. It is about applying moderation in enjoying such electronic entertainment. Getting addicted to computer games or video watching until studies are neglected is still a no-no; however studying with no entertainment is unacceptable as well. As the saying goes, “All work but no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Hence, selfdiscipline and proper time management are keys to achieve a balanced life. While electronic entertainment seems enjoyable and fun to us, creating or producing such creative media involves more than that. In producing multimedia products such as a video clip or a web page, it involves more than just the content to be delivered. For instance, when designing and developing a web page, a web developer has to consider the size of the content (text, images and etc), the layout of the web page (location of placing the content), the usability of the page (convenient for viewer to access to certain features
such as the menu and navigation panel), the theme (colour or font type) of the web page, apart from the content itself. Similarly, when producing an animation, besides the storyline, animator has to look into the gesture movement and the simulation aspect too. In the recent released movie by Disney, Zootopia, Kendra Penningroth reported that in order to create the realistic perception of the animal fur, a designated team studied animal fur microscopically and had created numerous types of animated fur that will react according to different lighting systems. Moreover, in producing computer games, more aspects are to be considered such as the difficulty of the levels, intelligent level of the characters, stunning visual effects, eye catching game assets and others elements which seem to be arbitrary to players. In short, it could be summarised that producing creative content such as these could be challenging and to do it well, professional skills are needed. Therefore, the range of skillful professions has been widened from the typical professional jobs as recognised in 1970s to these creative technologists in 2010s worldwide.
Based on the statistical data provided by newzoo.com, an online market research company, it has been reported that in year 2014, there was a total of 81.5 billion dollar of revenue generated in the global games market. It may surprise you that the region with the largest revenue generated (45% of the generated revenue) was Asia Pacific, compared to Europe or America regions. In Malaysia, there were 293 million dollar of revenue generated despite the relatively smaller population of 30.7 million. Furthermore, the Malaysian government has also noticed the potential economic growth and job opportunities in the sector of creative technology (which includes computer games development, animation, multimedia development and design). Hence, it has strategised its policies towards knowledge economy. The Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), started to collaborate with some of the pioneer companies in this area, such as GameFounders, to accelerate Malaysia’s
vision of becoming Asia’s games hub by year 2020. With the evolving trend in the global market and the initiatives taken by both government and industries, it is anticipated to have more job openings and demand in this relatively newer sector. In order to achieve this vision, new job openings such as the game artist, game concept designer, game programmer, mobile game developer, animator, technical artist, assistant producer, audio engineer and many others are surely to be in demand. Our world has changed drastically in the past 30 to 40 years, electronic entertainment was once unavailable, becomes a reality now,
thanks to the advancement of computer technology and the Internet. While practicing such entertainment correctly is enjoyable, preparing and developing it will require more knowledge and consideration from subject experts. In the market of creative technology, particularly the multimedia and computer games related sector, it will become one of the main drivers to boost the economy of Malaysia, as Malaysia is transforming to a high income, knowledge-oriented nation. In the generation to come, those well-known professionals such as medical practitioners, engineers and lawyers will remain as in demand, but more and more skillful specialists in new professions, inclusive of these creative technologists, will join their coalition to impact the world, both economically and socially. In Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU), as a university aiming to produce professionals to meet the market needs, we support the creative technology sector, particularly by offering programmes in multimedia, computer games development, animation and creative design. Lecturers with academic and/or industrial experiences are ready to provide consultation and guidance to students, apart from the usual teaching and learning process. Besides, industrial partners are invited to jointly develop and refine the academic syllabus in order to meet the industrial standards and needs, as part of the efforts in producing skillful workforce in the respective areas. In terms of facilities, APU provides lab computers with various ranges of specifications to tailor different needs of teaching and learning. For instance, Apple desktop (iMac), Windows based desktop, interactive drawing pad (Wacom) and gaming desktop (Alienware) have been made available to students for different development experiences. Moreover, cutting-edge software for creative content development such as Adobe Creative Cloud package, Unity, 3D Studio Max, Maya and many more are ready for the deployment of tutorials, assignments and projects. By doing so, we, as the university, hope to see our graduates to be successful in their careers of creative technology upon graduation. SE

Portman was semifinalist. One may relate Portman’s scientific background to Rowan Atkinson, the famous Mr. Bean comedian, who has both master and bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Oxford and Newcastle University respectively. And yes, this shows gift in acting and talent in science are not mutually exclusive. Portman’s excellence in research and her stardom rise in Hollywood are all down to her two best characters – determination and focus, as described by Stephen Kosslyn, her former Harvard Psychology Professor, “It was very clear when she was a student that she is a very determined person and capable of focused effort over a sustained period. She is now demonstrating the results of that determination and focus.” Alan Dershowitz, who worked with Portman when she was his research assistant, viewed her as a brilliant student, “She was in my seminar called
Neuropsychology and the Law, and I didn’t know who she was because her name was Natalie Hershlag. It was a few weeks into the semester that I learned she was an actress, but she was a terrific student.” Dershowitz gave Portman an A+ for her research on new methods of lie detection. The testimonies from her mentors basically demolish any doubt that Portman had an easier route in Harvard because of her fame and acting talent. Underneath the gorgeous and elegant looks, she is a very intelligent woman. Abigail Baird, Portman’s mentor in Harvard once said, “I’ve taught at Harvard, Dartmouth and Vassar, and I’ve had the privilege of teaching a lot of very bright kids. There are very few who are as inherently bright as Natalie is, who have as much intellectual horsepower, who work as hard as she did. She didn’t take a single thing for granted.” Until today, the society still has the stereotype that there is
nothing behind a pretty face. However, the very fundamental logic is that your face has nothing to do with how smart and intelligent you are, and Portman is the embodiment of the best of both. Perhaps, this is also the time we should start to celebrate individual’s talent diversity. Yet, that is not even the most striking message which we can learn from Portman. The most remarkable lesson from Natalie Portman’s both acting and academic career is that no matter where your talent lies, it still needs the same characters – determination and focus, to succeed. M LSI JOURNA ST ILL MATTERS Facebook and Instagram are not how you can help change the world. It’s Journalism, and here’s why.

T
he Panama Press fiasco that recently headlined across the world has certainly brought some excitement back into journalism. But for many years, many educational institutions saw a decline of interest in studying journalism as many reporters and photojournalists were reported missing, kidnapped by terrorists, or worse, killed in conflicted territories. When US journo James Foley was interviewed after surviving his first detainment for 44 days in 2011 by Gaddafi loyalist forces, he said being a journalist gave him the strength to endure his condition, “You go through different emotions when you’re in captivity... These weird extreme ideas of where you are based on this capture. You don’t want to be defined as that guy who got captured in 2011. I believe front line journalism is important [without it] we can’t tell the world how bad it might be.” Foley’s death in 2014 at the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq (ISIS) was brutal but his legacy was a profound reminder of why it still matters be a journalist, the passion and determination required in the pursuit of being one. Journalism is a life-changing course. Here’s a take on what you need to know about becoming a journalist – and why it’s still awesome. The job scope of a journalist is endless. A journalist is like a chameleon. One can adapt to many situation and thus, easily migrate into any other areas of expertise because of the skill set you acquire that are
useful in almost every type of industry: a fast-learner, penmanship, savvy in research, exposed to high-pressured and stressful conditions, confident with a high level of communication skills and a prolific reader. Weakness, you ask? Journalists are not fashionable people. That would be the least of their concern. However, Anderson Cooper has changed that perception. Journalism is not just about writing, but your versatility in writing. Journalists are people who love writing not as a form of therapy, but as a way to bridge communities with the rest of the world. Writing acts as a medium of understanding the world we live in. Journalists are skilled with the necessary writing skills to educate the mass and to keep us informed with what is happening. The next time you read the news, think of
how you are obtaining this piece of information. Someone reported it. Journalists are the ones who literally journey to ground zero when everyone else is escaping it when a disaster strike, be it at Fukushima surrounded by deadly radiation, Bandar Aceh after the devastating tsunami, or New York after the September 11 attack. It’s not danger that brought them there, but their passion for writing. To inform and protect the public is what got them to ground zero and that takes courage. Journalism is risk-taking, but no more dangerous than the odds of 1 out of 1,200 people being struck by lightning and 1 in 3.4 million people being killed in a plane crash. Journalists are brave people who are willing to take risks because they are passionate in making a difference in people’s lives. Knowledge is key and journalists are courageous because they find it their mission to educate the public in order to enrich and empower societies. As a result, journalists are often successful as team leaders, motivation speakers and
powerful advocates of social awareness. They are the movers and shakers of the world. The world is your office. Journalists will tell you they hate being stuck in an office because nothing happens within a solitary confinement. They go where the action is, and so journalists are powerful players in any organisation because they are willing to venture into unknown territories and write about it, to give voices to the marginalised, and to discover areas beyond our comfort zones. Their writings may be within five columns or a few pages, but their adventures extend beyond cities and communities which make them highly knowledgeable, avid learners and prolific readers. Companies love hiring people with journalism expertise
because they are willing to question ideas, provide critical analyses, be creative and imaginative and above all, are seasoned travellers. In short, it is difficult to say a journalist is merely a professional writer belonging to a magazine, newspaper or a broadcast centre. A journalist is skillful enough to take on any occupation; confident to lead or manage businesses; and passionate to take on challenging projects knowing it will help improve people’s lives. So if you think you’ve got what it takes to be a journalist, take the leap and let a whole new world open up for you. You are definitely going to change the world. SE

nity in diversity is achieving oneness through the spirit, soul and mind. Malaysia is a living example of this phenomena that has been a precedent practised for many years. It is a multi-racial country comprising predominantly the Malays, Chinese and Indians with other native habitants who occupy East Malaysia. They may have different religions, languages and cultures but have maintained unity through respect. Respect, a simple virtue with a magnanimous meaning has been instilled in all the different cultures and this trait has been emphasised from generation to generation. Therefore, people living in Malaysia consider themselves as the children of one mother that is the Mother of Malaysia. Colonisation has not robbed that unity and sentiment despite the practice of different faiths like Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Sikhism, Jainism and Christianity. People here are God fearing in nature and believe in purification of soul, rebirth, and salvation, luxury of heaven and punishments of hell. They observe festivals like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Wesak Day, Thaipusam, and Christmas which is unanimously celebrated. This joyous occasion is carried out with invites that gets everyone to sit and drink and eat various cuisines that are identified with each race. In the course of this hearty sit in session, communication transpires in different languages which if statistically observed is approximately 1650 languages and dialects. There is a feeling of brotherhood that
is permeated irrespective of race and religion. It is unity through love, respect and bond that has kept Malaysia intact all these years. The importance of respect, kindness, honesty, courage, perseverance, self- discipline, compassion, generosity and dependability are important values. It is the vision of many parents to ensure all these values are rooted in their children when they are young. In carrying this out, it would shelter them from potentially grave societal influences and set the foundation to become good citizens. The failure in not fully realising these responsibilities is considered a fatal consequence. This vision is tough as teaching values consumes time, which is a rare commodity for many parents today. It has been proven that many parents are engaging with their work and commitments and spend very little time with their young ones.
The consequence of other influences like peer pressure and the entertainment industry through the Internet television, movies, video games and music have an overwhelming influence on children. Conversations with children on a consistent basis on what is right and wrong, and what makes good behaviour and what doesn’t will pave the way for children to share moral conundrums with you rather than your peers. If this approach is not inculcated, children will turn to their peers rather than their parents. This is a difficult feat as the norm is “What’s for dinner? Or “Where’s the remote control?. Still, there are many ways to weave lessons about values into your everyday interactions with your children. If you want your children to exhibit values like honesty, self-respect and compassion,
then you need to show these qualities yourself. All the teaching in the world can be undone if your children watch you behave in ways that contradict with what is said. When you fall short with your children, not only do you need to acknowledge your mistake, you also need to tell them you’re sorry. This shows them that you value and respect their thoughts, perspectives and feelings. You’re also modeling an important way to show respect to others, and how to accept responsibility for your mistakes. These are some of the solutions which would intiate good values in a positive way that is tuned in to their wavelength of thinking as it is the norm that allows nurturing. It is important to share our personal experiences in a way that a moral dilemma is passed on and the manner in which this decision was attained. Children should be held
accountable for their mistakes and know the result of their bad decisions. Children should not be allowed to take the short cut out of any situation. They should finish what they have started even if it is challenging. Children should be encouraged to help others whenever they can. This would be done through simple acts of kindness such as CSR projects and acts of helping those who are sick, shy or new kids at school. The actions of children should be applauded even if it is simple chores like cleaning the rooms, getting along with their sibling or just talking without getting angry. In conclusion values are nurtured and not existing innately but through effort, time and sacrifice. SE
