4 Reasons Why AccurioPress C14000 is a Game-Changer Now available to Asia, the new Konica Minolta AccurioPress flagship models are designed to offer unprecedented print quality, media flexibility and a high degree of automation. Konica Minolta Business Solutions Asia (BSA) announced the availability of its flagship production printer, the AccurioPress C14000 and C12000 to the Asian region. With the AccurioPress C14000 series, Konica Minolta expanded into the high speed cut sheet toner print market. The AccurioPress C14000 series is Konica Minolta’s answer to the high speed production print segment. The new AccurioPress series is designed to distinguish with unprecedented print quality, amazing media flexibility and advanced automation. The AccurioPress C14000 offers stability, high durability and can be a strategic addition to business growth and transformation plans. Here are four ways how the AccurioPress series can transform a print business: 1- Optimal print speed of 140ppm One of the main differentiator is that print service providers (PSPs) can now print at 140 pages per minute (ppm) in A4. This makes the AccurioPress C14000 40% faster than the existing toner-based line up. This meant that the press allows PSPs to print 8,400 pages an hour and up to 200,000 pages a day. As a result of the higher productivity and shorter turnaround times, businesses can better utilise their time focusing on more important areas of the business. The fast printing speed enables PSPs to also take more jobs and increase revenue. 2-Opportunities for Business Expansion With resolution equivalent to 3600x2400 dpi and enhanced media capability up to 450 gsm, the AccurioPress C14000 series offers breath-taking productivity

Becoming a prin

turning multiple print proce

Taiwan’s Home Making Creative Printing installed the Iridesse Production Press to level up printing efficiency for its signature “Cocktail Business Coloured Cards”. TM

Founded in 1987, Home Making Creative Printing was the first ‘combined printing’ (combined different customers’ job into one in offset printing) company to use “computer combination” printing for business cards as its primary enterprise. The company has 180 employees and is the largest business of its type in Taiwan with the highest number of subscriptions for on-line printing. Home Making Creative Printing came to prominence for providing customers with a diversified range of printing

products. Its signature product, which caused a sensation in the industry, is the “Cocktail Business Coloured Cards.” “To integrate complex production procedures using digital printing technology to speed up the production efficiency of our signature product ‘Cocktail Business Coloured Cards’ was a major challenge that we were facing,” said Mr. Lin Chuan-Wang, founder of Home Making Creative Printing. In a market that now demands quick and diversified personalized products,

printing efficiency is a crucial concern. If a customer wishes to print two special colours, the dry ink needs to be changed and reprinted which would take much time and effort. With a project that needs two procedures to complete, it often leads to a delay in delivery. To be able to cope with such obstacles, Mr. Lin sought to purchase a new kind of printing machine. Introducing the Iridesse Production Press Mr. Lin consulted with a number of industry peers about digital printing brands. Many graphic arts operators recommended Fuji Xerox machines as well as their service team. In 2013, Home Making Creative Printing became a user of Fuji Xerox, with an expectation to increase production efficiency on combined printing for business cards with increased printing lengths. TM

As Home Making Creative Printing was trying to come up with a solution to speed up the production efficiency on digital business cards and integrate the complex procedures in printing “Cocktail Business Coloured Cards”, Mr. Lin was invited to the Iridesse Production Press Launch Press Conference.

nt megastore:

esses into one Immediately after seeing its powerful functions, the company decided to invest in the Iridesse Production Press. Mr. Lin was compelled by these main reasons for choosing the Iridesse Production Press: TM

4. Stabilized processing quality: Wide range of paper media, HD printing and long-sized banner printing materials are supported.

TM

1. Exclusive six-colour print engine: Special inks of gold, silver, white and clear ink dry can be added. 2. One of the smallest toners “EA Dry Ink” delivering breath-taking image quality. 3. Special base technology: Easy to have overprint performance

Enabling Signature ‘Cocktail Business Coloured Cards’ – and more First of all, Iridesse Production Press utilizes six-colour printing technology that no other type of digital machine has, and it allows you to adjust the shades of special colours freely. The performance of delivering colours exceeds previous models. TM

In the past, if a print needed both gold and silver, only methods such as gold

and silver hot stamping could complete the task. The procedures were complex that required two processes and the shades could not be changed due to the adjustment limit of colours. TM

Now, Iridesse Production Press combines the printing of gold and silver as well as general colours in single pass, making printing 20% faster in comparison with the previous models. With the free adjustment of the shades of gold and silver, it delivers a variety of mixed colours of gold and silver. The metallic effect of overprinting from special colours also surprised Mr. Lin. TM

Iridesse Production Press uses one of the world’s smallest particle size toners “HD EA Dry Ink” which enables smooth and high-resolution printing, controlling highly flexible dry ink particles with molecular grade. It utilizes printing technology that evenly transfers six layers of dry ink and provides an image that is in smooth high definition and at the same time maintains high productivity and a wide variety of print applications. Furthermore, Home Making Creative Printing’s service of “Cocktail Business Coloured Cards” uses digital printing that does not require ‘combined printing’. Apart from a few types of

having accumulated years of trust from their close cooperation. “I have been most satisfied working with Fuji Xerox Taiwan for many years. Among the reasons for my long-term investment in Fuji Xerox equipment are: the service team would come at once regardless of the weather in case of a sudden break-down of equipment that requires repairing, general professional machine maintenance services and providing consumables,” said Mr. Lin. As the pioneer of combined printing in Taiwan, Home Making Creative Printing insists on finding its own unique style through “transcendence and innovation.” Aside from enhancing its printing technology, the company has also established “Paper Goods” a Cloud-based photography platform and launched the world's very first “Shoot and Print” mobile app, which targets personalized products.

special paper materials, more than 70% of paper materials can be printed on. With the Iridesse Production Press’ outstanding specialty colours and the wide range of paper media, Home Making has introduced its unique and exquisite “Cocktail Business Coloured Cards”. TM

“Digital printing is certainly the trend at the moment and will continue into the future of the graphic arts market. ‘Cocktail Business Coloured Cards’ offers small-volume production of a wide range of multi-layer printing styles using ground-breaking and against-tradition printing methods; an inter-generational service that integrates digital printing and technology, traditional graphic arts and multi-processing. Iridesse Production Press is the key factor that helped push ‘Cocktail Business Coloured Cards’ to the next level,” said Mr. Lin. TM

On its way to becoming a Printing Megastore In addition to the qualities of the Iridesse, Home Making Creative Printing is more than happy to support and purchase Fuji Xerox products,

With its smart digital beauty editor, users can enjoy a customized layout and design. Home Making Creative Printing continues to develop its range of services in the hope of becoming a “Printing Mega-store”. Expanded Media Choic By: Gianluigi Rankin, Director Product Management at Memjet

Adoption of inkjet printing solutions continues to grow in print markets around the world. Print providers embrace inkjet technology because it gives them an affordable way to deliver short runs of the high-quality, customized print products their customers demand. As more providers embrace inkjet printing, many have been frustrated to discover that their choice of substrates is more limited – and often more expensive – than the cost of substrates used in their analog printing processes.

several critical advantages to users – they are lightfast, durable, and optimized for long printhead life. Because these inks contain a lot of water, they are also safer for people, products, and the environment.

As a leader in the development of inkjet printing technology, Memjet is investing in initiatives that expand the range and versatility of substrates used in inkjet printing while reducing the cost.

During the printing process, the water in aqueous ink can be removed in 2 ways. Either a porous surface or coating is used to absorb the water and allow it to slowly evaporate over time without impacting the print, or the colorants need to be immobilized as soon as they hit the surface of the print substrate and dryers are then used for rapid evaporation of the water.

Expanding Substrates for Growing Markets Once a provider makes a move to inkjet, it is essential to understand the range of substrates available to them – and how these substrates differ from the choices they have with an analog solution. Their knowledge must start with inks. Memjet’s aqueous pigment inks offer

Currently, printers using inkjet printing solutions have access to three categories for paper-based substrates to choose from: Uncoated offset/bond/plain paper Because these papers are porous, they are printable with inkjet inks. However,

the colors are generally not very vibrant, and the print quality not as sharp. Inkjet treated paper These papers are similar to an uncoated offset paper but have been treated to boost the vibrancy of the prints by keeping the colorants/pigments close to the surface of the substrate. Inkjet coated paper An inkjet coating is generally applied to the paper by the paper mill. The inkjet coating allows for the absorption of the ink vehicle, and similar to offset coated paper it provides the paper with the intended look and feel. Film-based media is not porous, so the only option is an inkjet coated film. Understanding Your Substrate Options Inkjet treated and coated substrates are more expensive than substrates optimized for flexo or offset printing. This higher price is due to the cost of the treatments or coatings that are applied.

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 7 2020

ices for Inkjet Printing of media for offset and flexo is still far higher than inkjet media. Also, some paper mills have shut down in recent years. Today, the concentration of paper production is focused on a few mills, reducing the selection of papers and driving up prices. A Lower Cost Alternative To meet these challenges and help print providers fully realize the benefits of inkjet technology, Memjet has invested in the development of primers and coatings incorporated into the printing solutions developed by our OEM partners. These primers and coatings can be applied with existing equipment either nearline or inline with the printing solution or provided to a toll coater who can apply the fluid to a customer supplied print substrate. Paper sellers charge a premium for inkjet coated and treated papers. The cost premium for an inkjet treated paper is relatively small, in the range of 10 percent over the equivalent uncoated offset paper. However, the cost premium for inkjet coated papers and films is much higher, ranging from 30 percent to greater than 100 percent. This higher cost premium creates a barrier for some applications. It also limits the inkjet-printed volumes required for media suppliers to bring down the cost of the materials. Economics also plays a role in the cost of these substrates. While the use of inkjet printing is growing, the current demand for inkjet compatible substrates is still a fraction of what is being manufactured for other print processes, so manufacturing processes are not as efficient and, therefore, more costly. Availability of Media Despite inkjet’s growth, the selection

By integrating primers and coatings into their printing process, providers have a much broader selection of media substrates available and at a lower cost than the current selection of inkjet coated substrates.

These printing and coating R&D efforts go beyond just paper and film-based applications. Providers developing applications where the print surface is not flat (i.e., direct to shape, cans, and other cylindrical objects) can also use primers and coatings to facilitate highquality printing processes. A Win-Win for Print Providers The integration of primers and coatings into the printing process will increase the volume of digital printing. That’s good news for print providers because more volume means media manufacturers will be able to more efficiently manufacture inkjet printready substrates – and to make them more affordable than they have been in the past. If this expanded manufacturing does happen, print providers will have more options open to them; choosing to buy inkjet media from a supplier or treat it themselves. This expansion of choice gives print providers more options and greater control of their substrate choices and, ultimately, their business.

The increasing demand for large format printers for home furnishing & decor and vehicle wrap applications, the rising requirement for large format printing from the in-plant market, as well as the availability of varieties of large format printers with a varied price range, are creating tremendous growth opportunities for the players in the large format printer market. Décor applications is especially highlighted to grow at a high CAGR. Decor is high-volume, open-edition art printing and custom imaging used for decoration. Decor is a lucrative, fastgrowing segment of the large format printer market. Decor applications include wallcoverings and photo murals, canvases, wall decals, window

covering, professional photography, and fine art and decoration. 1.6m and Inkjet Printers projected to grow at a high CAGR The market for large format printers with a print width ranging from 60" to 70" (about 1.5m to 1.8m) is expected to grow at the highest CAGR during the forecast period. These printers are mostly used in large-scale commercial applications, such as banners, large vehicle graphics, and advertisements. They offer an output with great details and high quality. Ink-based (inkjet) printers are also projected to grow at a high CAGR. Inkjet printer manufacturers have started providing faster inkjet printers

with reduced running costs for large format printing, which has led to the widespread adoption of inkjet printers in this industry. The reason behind the decreasing demand for the toner-based printer is the replacement of these printers with inkjet printers due to their benefits such as low cost and low maintenance. Canon Oce Colorado 1650 The Canon Océ Colorado 1650 printer is 1.6m wide roll-to-roll device that prints resolutions of 1,800dpi at up to 159sqm/hr. The Océ Colorado 1650 features two innovations in the form of a new Canon UVgel flexible ink, and Océ FLXfinish technology. The Océ Colorado 1650 is aimed at print service providers (PSPs) that are producing high volumes of large format applications, such as self-adhesive vinyls, wall coverings, canvasses, soft signage and vehicle graphics that require a high degree of flexibility for mounting and framing. The Océ Colorado 1650 incorporates Canon’s Océ FLXfinish technology, a new approach to LED curing which allows the user to choose between matte or gloss modes for each individual print without changing inks or paper. In addition, the Océ Colorado 1650 works with a new version of Canon UVgel ink. The ink is designed for maximum flexibility by increasing the ‘stretchability’ of each cured ink droplet. This results in output optimal for applications that require cutting, bending, creasing and folding without risk of cracking, such as in soft signage.

The partnership between Xian Jun Long and Heidelberg goes back twenty years – and the Speedmaster CD 102 with the 999th printing unit from the Shanghai plant is also in production there. “We already have the first Speedmaster CD 102-8+L from the Heidelberg Shanghai plant and look forward to the new Speedmaster CD 102-9+L in the usual Heidelberg quality due to be installed here in the near future. We will have another two sets of Speedmaster CD 102-8+L presses delivered to China Xian Jun Long Printing Group in August this year. Our goal is to grow successfully and to offer our customers products with more added value,” explained Kelvin Chong, Information Engineering Director of China Xian Jun Long Printing Group.

The anniversary press is in operation as part of an extensive fleet of Speedmaster CD 102 and CX 102 systems. Growth market China Packaging printing in China is growing with greater speed and sustainability than globally. The Speedmaster CD 102 has long been a bestseller in the Chinese market – it is highly versatile, whether for long or short runs, thin substrates or cardboard with thicknesses of up to a millimeter – the press offers outstanding productivity, quality, and value retention, and thus a high degree of investment security for customers. “The market in Asia is evolving, and we are seeing strong demand for customer-specific machines and a wealth of variants, especially

delivers 9,999th fed printing press for packaging, label, and commercial printing companies featuring increasingly innovative and optimized technologies that is widely accepted by and popular with Chinese users.” Heidelberg Shanghai: a success story The Shanghai production site has a workforce of around 430 people. Printing presses in 50 x 70 cm and 70 x 100 cm formats are produced there, mainly intended for sale in China, but also for other Asian markets and the rest of the world. Over 10,000 printing units have now been delivered over fifteen years.

for packaging printing,” explained Achim Mergenthaler, manager of the Heidelberg site in Shanghai. “We are proud of our high quality, which – thanks to the high standards of the Heidelberg production network – is equal to that of the machines from the production facility in WieslochWalldorf.” Heidelberg intends to further accelerate the expansion of its production in China. Over 30 percent of all printing units are already built in China. The Shanghai production site will further increase the manufacture of standard models for the Chinese and Asian market and add special machine configurations, especially in packaging printing, to the portfolio. This will result in a competitive offering, particularly for the up-and-coming

printing companies in China, which need the best machines in terms of productivity and quality and offer comprehensive solutions. Heidelberg is therefore the only printing press manufacturer with the flexibility to offers its customers both locally manufactured machines as well as high-end machines from Germany. “With the extended portfolio and higher production capacity in the Shanghai plant, we have reached a new milestone for Heidelberg China in further expanding our solutions for packaging printing,” said Benny Huang, CEO of Heidelberg Greater China at the festive presentation ceremony. “We have been producing the Speedmaster CD 102 in the Shanghai plant since 2009. The modularity of Xeikon’s Cheetah 2.0 “Interket is one of Europe’s leading label groups operating out of 5 production sites in Europe: Germany, the Netherlands, UK, Denmark and Sweden”, begins Carl Parkander, CEO of the Interket Group. Each site caters to its local market and every site is slightly different from the others. The overall strategy of the Interket Group is to be close to its local markets. The company supplies a wide variety of labels that range from basic labels to complex label solutions as well as security applications to satisfy customer requirements. Its customer base ranges from small local businesses to large Blue Chip and pan-European clients, all of whom are represented across all industry sectors and labelling applications and demand a high level of service. While we have digital equipment installed at different sites, we did not yet have a production digital press in Sweden. This investment in a Xeikon digital press is a major milestone for Interket. We are gradually moving away from high volume label production to short-run label production with more added value solutions. This means increasing service levels and working with faster turnaround times. This requirement is of course a perfect fit for digital printing.

The key reason we chose Xeikon is the modularity of the different types of presses and of course top printing quality which is a given. We are now investing in a specific model – the CX300. With this machine we will still have the possibility to upgrade in the future. If the printing volumes in Sweden require a higher capacity, which we hope, then we can easily increase the production capacity of the press. The fact that the investment is scalable in the future represents a unique value for our company. In that respect, the Xeikon CX300 is second to none in the industry today. It is a 330 mm wide press with a production speed of 30 m/min. We can go wider and be more productive in the future if needed, and it leaves all options open to develop our strategy together with our other production facilities. The Xeikon press will also serve as a backup solution for our other facilities, and in the future it might make sense to have a 520 mm press. Even though we are investing in a 330 mm wide press today, we have the possibility to

upgrade or convert our Xeikon press into a 520 mm capable press. Our decision to go for Xeikon is a choice for flexibility. For Interket, modularity, and thus flexibility, is a major advantage! Secondly, the workflow capability of Xeikon with its X-800 digital frontend is very appealing. We realize that in order to stay successful in the label market, you need to look further than just your digital press. You need a support infrastructure for the press and you need to look at the total process as well. The press will be integrated to our production plant and connected to our MIS system. Xeikon has demonstrated the power of its front-end and how this can lead us into a true digital transformation.” Stefan Gustafsson, Managing Director Interket AB, continues, “We are really looking forward to utilising the clever technology and flexibility of the Xeikon CX300 so that we at Interket Sweden can make the most of the digital transformation. The Xeikon solution really fits in to our current business model of high service offering. The workflow aspect is very important for us. On top of what Carl has explained, I would also like to add

the fact that the quality of the white toner is state-of-the-art with the best result in opaqueness. Furthermore, the fact that the Xeikon toners are food safety approved really makes sense for us: food labels and health care labels are a major part of our business. Finally, Xeikon has a subsidiary with direct sales and excellent service in Sweden. There is extra security in having your digital partner nearby. We used to rely on our colleagues from the Netherlands for help with digital label jobs. Now we can produce them directly in our own plant. The logistical benefits including cost savings deliver an immediate advantage to our customers in Sweden. The combination of having both conventional and digital printing here in Sweden will make it easier to attract new customers locally. We will also sell in a different way. Of course, we will sell short run labels, but in addition we will also aim at the complete supply chain of goods and that will bring in jobs that we could not have sold before. Variable

data labels are just one example. What’s more, Xeikon will help us train our salespeople with tools that they have developed just for that purpose. There is a clear strategy behind our investments. We first developed a specific application at a customer’s request, and the next step was to implement an MIS system in Sweden. This MIS is now implemented on all our sites. The Xeikon press, together with an offline finishing device, is the last investment enabling us to better serve our customers in Sweden. Until recently, for short runs we either had to print with conventional equipment here in Helsingborg, or our colleagues in the other countries would help us with production on their digital press. From now on, we can serve our Swedish customers even better thanks to the Xeikon label press.” Filip Weymans, VP Marketing at Xeikon concludes, “For the past 3 decades, we have experienced the importance of workflow first-hand and

we keep innovating to optimize and simplify our X-800. The Cheetah 2.0 series, with the Xeikon CX300 as the new kid on the block, features builtin technology that reports in real time on performance, availability, etc., via a cloud connection, providing data that translates into information for factbased decision making. The machine-to-machine interface allows for the integration of preand post-equipment either inline or offline. This interface transfers all relevant information about the jobs to the appropriate finishing module to eliminate human errors. The information flows seamlessly through the manufacturing process and contributes to the overall equipment effectiveness (OEE). The man-tomachine interface has been designed in a way that allows the operator to assess the status of his press either live or remotely. This helps Interket, with their different production sites, to cooperate in an efficient way across the group.”

Assessments, Platforms with Workflow The most expensive things you do in your printing plant every day involve talking to clients and physically touching their work. You talk to clients to better understand the work they want you to do, and you touch the work, in prepress or at other points in the process, to ensure that the client’s intent is rendered on to the substrate. But every conversation and every touch has a financial impact. While you rely on workflow tools to aid the process, in most companies there are also spreadsheets, whiteboards, and sticky notes used to gather and communicate information about the jobs-in-progress. It’s only natural! However, the more you talk and touch, the less money you make on the job.

team members add additional steps, circumvent steps, create spreadsheets to track things that the workflow software isn’t tracking, and before you realise what has happened, your workflow is a series of disconnect steps that is undocumented and inefficient.

Workflow should be the infrastructure that allows you to do the most work at the least cost – but over time the solutions put in place to meet a specific set of needs, job types and clients begins to wear and rub. Well-meaning

Assessing Where You Are to Plan for the Future Workflow has never been the big talk track in printing. Some look at workflow software as a necessary evil. The complaints range from difficulties

How can you tell if your work is no longer flowing, but moving through a series of hoops and hurdles? Start by taking a quick look at what you have, and then begin looking at the emerging solutions that can help you become more efficient. in installation and set-up to complicated user interfaces that take too much time to understand. The complaints have some basis in the reality of dealing with software that was often created to meet the needs of a specific print shop configuration before being marketed to the print industry at large. Then add the changes in print production over the last decade, and the odds that the workflow installed is perfectly suited to the work being done today are not good. Some of the common symptoms of a workflow that is out of sync with the current print work mix are: 1. Trouble getting a larger number of short run/small batch jobs onboarded, into production, and out the door so they can be invoiced. 2. A growing number of overtime shifts impacting job profit margins. 3. Automation solutions that require manual touchpoints – islands of automation.

s and Making Money

4. Installed software that no one is using.

edit! The next stop is the point where you begin to work with a print job.

5. Multiple processes for the same function – sometimes the result of mergers and acquisitions.

Some organisations have embraced web-to-print solutions, bought or built, while others still work by taking orders over the phone or exclusively through a salesperson or print broker. You may have all these onboarding points. You may discover that you have several webto-print solutions as well as different onboarding methods depending on the salesperson or broker you work with.

Any of these conditions will cost you time and money, but as they add up, they can seriously impact your ability to run profitably. Sadly, these situations do not fix themselves over time, and trying to add more software on top of a challenged workflow often only adds more cost without repairing the underlying problems. Before you write that check for a new workflow solution, do a self-assessment that starts with a walk through your workflow. This is a best practice recommended by most workflow experts as the starting point for the move to operational excellence. Begin your workflow walk with a whiteboard. Identify the types of work you do at the highest level. List your equipment and your software. If you have asset lists, start with them – but be prepared to

Make some notes on the ways work comes to you because this is the area cited in industry surveys as being the most disruptive. This is especially true for companies who have transitioned with their customers from long runs of static work that was on the same cadence year in and year out to shorter runs with more variations. Once you look at how jobs come on board into the print shop, walk with the different types of jobs through the shop. Listen for how many phone calls back to customers are needed to confirm

specifications, decide on substrates, adjust expectations on delivery. As the jobs move into prepress and pre-flight, how many jobs are rejected for missing elements? Is everyone using the installed workflow solutions, or are private spreadsheets and notebooks the true measure of job progress? Review the job scheduling and watch for the number of reworks. Is there work that has been printed that is waiting on finishing? If you have production dashboards, how close are their indicators to what you found on your walk? Record everything you see. Now go back to your asset lists and look for the software that is installed and compare it to what is being used. Do you have unused software packages for which you still pay maintenance? Here is a place to capture some savings. Look at every software tool that is installed and identify where it is used and how it moves the workflow process forward. Once you have this refreshed view of your print production workflow, it’s time to consider the trends and

30 All types of applications, regardless of the eventual printing method, require well-defined workflow steps from preflighting to colour management. As a result, print workflow platforms are well-suited to support the changing industry needs by leveraging best-inclass components that create a universal workflow for processing and routing orders intelligently in one system.”

emerging technologies that can help you eliminate the inefficiencies and make money with your workflow! Build your Workflow Platform From the data-centric solutions that are informed by Industry 4.0 to the platform and framework orientations of an emerging set of Software-as-aService (SaaS) workflow options, the opportunity to remake your production workflow is in your grasp. Since drupa 2016 the industry has seen established workflow solutions retool to take advantage of cloudbased computing, subscription models for both delivery and payment, and compatibility with an emerging set of platforms designed to allow a workflow architect to create a bespoke flow by plugging tools into platforms and frameworks. Platforms as a method to allow disparate software tools to work together in a workflow provide distinct advantages. Consider a platform like Enfocus Switch, with more than 70 apps available for integration into the Switch platform. From CloudPrinter to handwriting generators, PDF tools and metadata handling applications, the Switch platform allows a workflow architect to assemble tools to optimise large segments of the production workflow. HP offers a similar approach with its PrintOS platform, introduced at drupa 2016, and continuing to expand with new solutions added to the PrintOS marketplace regularly.

The defining characteristic of these platforms is that applications used well-defined application programming interfaces (APIs) to integrate into the platform, making it easier to try a tool before committing to it. Expect to see more platforms introduced by the key workflow vendors and announcements of well-recognised tools available as plug-ins to existing platforms. Ryan McAbee, Director of Production Workflow for Keypoint Intelligence, makes this statement on platforms: “The need for workflow platforms will only intensify as the industry converges and analogue-heavy segments like packaging undergo further digital transformation.

Production printers should also take note of the emerging world of print customisation platforms that connect print buyers with print producers. Companies like Cimpress, Cloudprinter, Gelato, and InkRouter have developed global network platforms that make it easier to access print providers with different capabilities and delivery locations that can expand the footprint of any printer, anywhere. If you aren’t quite ready for a platform, look for tools and suites that can be integrated into your current environment that can capture data on jobs at every touchpoint and relay that information to production dashboards that inform not only the production floor but management. In the modern print shop, it is essential to be able to identify every cost associated with every job to ensure that margins are met. Bring your shopping list to drupa 2020 and spend time with both the independent software providers and the partner solutions features in

the hardware solutions stands. Ask questions about scalability as your business changes and grows and take the time to review any case studies that are offered. A few minutes of reading may prove extremely useful. Making Money with Workflow The promise of a well-designed workflow is that it includes only the needed software tools, captures and provides usable data to production and business dashboards. It can be scaled up or down over time to accommodate new product lines and new printing and finishing technologies is operational excellence. It provides the infrastructure that eliminates

unnecessary costs, unnecessary touchpoints, and unnecessary handling. In the 2019 InfoTrends European Software Investment Outlook, workflow was identified as the most overlooked 1.4 million euro cost centre. The goal should be to turn that into a profit centre by proactively managing prepress activities, how jobs are sold and files are received. Your workflow assessment should help you identify the real costs of job onboarding, which is the single biggest point of cost in the workflow process. Other surveys support the identification of job onboarding – getting the job from the point of sale to the point of print – as a key element to investigate when looking for places to streamline. If you have multiple web-to-print and file capture portals, this is a good time to consolidate on one. It should be scalable and secure. If jobs are arriving in email or through FTP it is difficult to automate. The best solutions make it easy for customers to upload files and provide options to automatically check the files for assets, pre-flight, and ensure that all job specifications are complete for the job. That alone can save hours of time. More sophisticated solutions might automatically route jobs based on business rules you establish, again taking the people out of that process. Remember that any of these solutions will require a keen understanding of your work processes and time to set up and implement. Once done, however, the cost savings will follow. And that is how you make money with your

Rapida 106 X – the ne benchmark in industria With the Rapida 106 X, Koenig & Bauer is unveiling a new high-performance sheetfed offset press for the medium format 740 × 1060mm. It meets every conceivable demand that today’s market makes of a press in terms of automation, digitisation and workflow solutions, thereby making it the latest in a line of trendsetting developments defining the future of industrial offset. Superior, dynamic and of lasting value – these are properties that the Rapida 106 X embodies with its new awardwinning design. Glass side panels, a new touchscreen operating concept and an expressive design language immediately identify the press as an ultra-modern automated printing system. What becomes evident with just a glance is that this is the most powerful Rapida that the market has ever seen. The new Rapida 106 X series aims to lend performance a further boost in order to make companies even more profitable. There are five criteria that play an especially decisive role in this: 1. Shorter makeready times – faster into print To avoid wasting even a second during makeready, the Rapida 106 X incorporates a host of pioneering and

New: PlateTronic plate logistics right up to the loading channels on the press. From the platesetter to intermediate plate storage and even the plate changer, all processes run fully automatically precisely coordinated features. These range from simultaneous plate changing in less than a minute with unbent and process-free plates to a multitude of parallel makeready processes, and also includes autonomous printing of a whole sequence of jobs with automatic activation of the good-sheet counter (AutoRun). At this level of automation, the Rapida 106 X is truly a perfect automatic printing system. As soon as the sheet counter reaches the specified run length for the current job, the impression is thrown off and the Rapida 106 X automatically begins the job changeover. Once makeready is completed, printing resumes for the next job without any intervention by the operator. The measuring and control systems detect when the Smart operating concept: the ErgoTronicApp makes the control console mobile

specified print quality has been attained and re-activate the sheet counter. After printing the required number of sheets for the second job, the press switches back into job changeover mode. This process is then repeated as often as is necessary to complete the whole sequence of jobs. Plate logistics right up to the printing unit A similarly high level of automation characterises the new PlateTronic plate logistics system. It can be incorporated into the new Rapida 106 X upon request. It has been designed as a modular system and exhibits the versatility to adapt to the requirements of each individual print company. From job preparation in the PPS system LogoTronic Professional to plate exposure and delivery up to the designated printing units on the press, as well as the removal of the old plates,

Typical commercial press: Rapida 106 X as an eight-colour press with perfecting unit for 4-over-4 production and an additional coater the process is completed without any manual intervention whatsoever. Assignment of the plates to the individual printing units is managed by the logistics system, meaning that the order in which the plates actually reach the press can be varied as required. The Koenig & Bauer logistics system guides the plates directly into the plate changers. The operator’s work consists solely of process monitoring. At commercial printing companies with short runs and frequent language or section changes in particular, the plate logistics system offers key benefits in terms of productivity. Imagine printing a job with a run length of around 350 sheets requiring removal of the old plates from eight or more changers, and loading of the same number of new plates ready for subsequent mounting, all while the job is proceeding – an operator could only keep pace with the press for a short time. The technology provides a distinct advantage in this case, and helps to ensure that the Rapida 106 X is always back in production as quickly as possible.

2. Higher speed – even faster in production As a world first, the Rapida 106 X reaches production speeds of up to 20,000 sheets per hour in perfecting mode. It thereby opens the door to entirely new levels of performance for perfector presses. Commercial printers that use eight-colour presses for 4-over4 production will be delighted, as they now have access to the same highperformance technology as companies working with straight presses only. Optimising job sequences offers additional potential for raising the daily output of sheetfed offset presses. With this in mind, Koenig & Bauer is launching a brand new tool together with the Rapida 106 X: the Job Optimizer. This tool acts as a link between MIS and PPS, and optimises the order of the jobs preset in the MIS scheduling module in accordance with technological or press-related considerations. The former include aspects such as the sheet format, substrate weight, type of coating and quality levels of complex formes.

Examples for the latter are the option of implementing parallel processes, or formes that are suitable for use of the print-clean function rather than resorting to more time-consuming washing processes. An optimised job sequence can shorten makeready times by a further 30 to 50 per cent, depending on the parameters of the specific job. Information on compliance with OEE criteria, used for overall equipment efficiency, is provided by the new LogoTronic Cockpit. Justin-time analyses are performed on all production data and times, and the results are presented in clearly structured diagrams. It is possible to compare the current production performance and makeready times with reference settings at just a glance. At the same time, production data can be used in costing analyses to enable comparisons with the planned values. Profits and losses are quantified in real time. 3. Reliable processes – stable in production

36 to manage store inventories, track consumables batches and much more. The app provides an accurate overview of which print jobs were produced with which batches of substrates, inks and consumables, even after the job is finished.

Coating plate changes are similarly automated on the Rapida 106 X and can be completed without the need for tools in under two minutes thanks to SAPC When it comes to measuring systems, too, Koenig & Bauer has set the benchmark. A single camera system (with two cameras on perfector presses) covers three functions: inline colour control, sheet inspection with continuous production monitoring, and comparison of the printed sheets with the pre-press PDF. QualiTronic ColorControl measures the ink densities in colour bars on every single sheet. The system uses the measured values to calculate corrections to the ink settings every ten sheets. In conjunction with the fast reaction by inking unit of the Rapida 106 X, jobs are brought into colour in next to no time – the number of waste sheets at start-up and after production stoppages decreases tangibly: just 25 to 50 sheets, depending on the job and quality parameters. QualiTronic PrintCheck upgrades inline colour control by adding a production monitoring function. When printing starts, the system scans a set number of good sheets to generate a reference. All printed sheets are subsequently compared with this reference. Any deviations that are detected are displayed on the monitor and can also be marked in the pile by using an optional tag inserter. A comparison of the printed sheet with a customer PDF is performed using QualiTronic PDFCheck. This system allows flaws to be detected before the actual production run even commences – a major bonus, especially for Internet or packaging printers. The PDF comparison is performed for

every single sheet during production, at a scan resolution of 100dpi. If the system spots any differences between print and PDF, the operator is alerted and is prompted to intervene. A report is created to document the print quality. QualiTronic PDF HighRes conducts sheet inspection with even greater precision. The content of each printed sheet is checked at a resolution of 290dpi. Even the tiniest flaws and deviations as minute as approx. 90µm can be detected, visualised and logged. To this end, two additional cameras are installed on the Rapida 106 X. Smart tools for intuitive processes Once the colour is within the specified tolerances, the Traffic Light function provides information about the overall quality of the production. Three different quality levels can be defined. If a green light is displayed, the quality meets the specifications and the goodsheet counter is activated automatically. Traffic Light allows waste to be reduced while printing in a defined, comparable quality and maintaining effective control over the whole length of a run. Koenig & Bauer is offering a pair of smart tools for the print process in the form of the Rapida LiveApps. ErgoTronicApp allows the entire press to be visualised on a mobile device. Printers can view all job data for the current and next job, production times, notifications and maintenance instructions, including support, to enable them to carry out the work. This makes the press console mobile. The ProductionApp can be used

4. Less maintenance – more time in production Data-driven services and digital business processes lay the foundations for optimised maintenance processes for sheetfed offset presses from Koenig & Bauer. Most of the customer-oriented services are based on performance data from the presses and their log files. PressCall improves communication with the remote maintenance service and optimises communication by eliminating language barriers. Visual PressSupport increases the scope of services that can be provided by remote maintenance by enabling direct insight into the press using the operator’s smartphone. Photos, videos, audio and a comment function help provide a much clearer description of the situation that results in a remote maintenance call, and also make it easier to provide assistance in relation to process technologies or mechanical press components. A monthly performance report shows performance data and key performance indicators of presses in an easy-tounderstand graphic form. 5. Digitalization – top in profitability Thanks to artificial intelligence and by making use of sensor data from the presses, a steady stream of features has been, and continues to be, developed to ensure the Rapida 106 X operates with ultimate productivity, to increase its production availability and to promote a detailed exchange of information between users and the manufacturer using digital channels. What we call our Customer Community is the central point of contact. This is where new tickets can be created, open tickets and performance reports can be viewed, and a range of other digital services can be accessed. All these details add up to make the Rapida 106 X the most powerful and most efficient medium-format Rapida that the market has ever seen.

Sustainable Packagin When it comes to addressing the plastic pollution issue in packaging, paper and bioplastics are two materials that often gets discussed. We scope out some of the latest sustainable packaging materials to have come out of Asia’s world of packaging in recent times. Toppan develops paper-based tube-pouch Paper-based material for body of easy to squeeze tube-shaped pouch further reduces plastic volume. Toppan Printing (Toppan), has developed the paper tube-pouch, a new paper-based version of the existing tube-pouch, which is shaped like a tube and easy to squeeze like a pouch. The paper tube-pouch is ideal for use in the food, toiletry, and pharmaceutical sectors, and full-scale sales are scheduled to be launched in Japan in fiscal 2020. Due to the use of thinner film material, the conventional tube-pouch is easier to squeeze and uses 30% less plastic than the type of laminated tube widely used for toothpaste. The new paper tube-pouch maintains the tube-pouch’s functionality while demonstrating even better environmental performance by employing a paper-based material for the body, making possible a 50% reduction in plastic volume according to Toppan.

Coupled with a redesign of the plastic parts of the head section, this enables plastic to be reduced by a total of 65%. Although plastic has been replaced with paper, the tube-pouch still maintains its shape even when the volume of content inside decreases, and the use of Toppan’s proprietary GL BARRIER film on the inner surface ensures the world-class and complete barrier performance required for such items as food and cosmetics. Pinyapel – the sustainable pineapple paper from the Philippines Made from discarded pineapple leaves, Pinyapel is food-safe, naturally waterresistant and 100% biodegradable, making it a viable packaging option. Developed by the Design Center of the Philippines, Pinyapel is a specialty paper that is processed and manufactured from the locally sourced pineapple leaves. The Philippines is the second largest pineapple producer in the world, and Pinyapel is made from the discarded leaves of its plants.

Pinyapel is reinforced and print-ready for packaging applications. The specialty paper can be used to make a number of products from paper shopping bags to coffee cups, most of which in the market are lined with plastic to make them water resistant. Pinyapel requires no extra plastic film layer, as pineapple leaves are naturally water-resistant. Pinyapel-made packaging can be in direct contact with food, making them a feasible alternative for food packaging. Pinyapel is 100% biodegradable. It can also decompose faster than other paper products. According to tests by the Design Center of the Philippines, Pinyapel reached about 55% mass loss in four weeks, much higher than the 21% mass loss in commercial paper bags. The innovation won the 2019 Wood Pencil award by the UK-based charity D&AD Future Impact for sustainability. It is also the Philippines’ first award for the category. based packaging is biodegradable and chemical-free. It can be dissolved in warm water, and has a two-year shelf life without preservatives. The company first launched Elle Jello, edible seaweed cups that come in a variety of colours and flavours. Evoware also produces edible food wrapping such as burger wrappers and single-use sachets, typically used for instant coffee or food condiments. Indonesia is the second biggest source of ocean plastic waste. With the use of seaweed, the company hopes to help the country cut down on plastic use, as well as providing income to local seaweed farmers. ndonesia produces some 10 million tonnes of seaweed each year, and targets 19 million tonnes by 2020. Seaweed do not take up land space and does not pose a risk to deforestation. Seaweed is also free from chemicals as it does not require fertilizers. No thorny issue: durian-based packaging Malaysian researchers developed biodegradable packaging from durian skin. A research team from Malaysia has created biodegradable food packaging made from the skin of the durian fruit. The team from the International Islamic University Malaysia combined

skin fibres of the durian with epoxidized palm oil, transforming it into a biodegradable polymer that can be moulded into food packaging containers. The team found that after three months of being buried in soil, about 83% of the packaging has degraded. In comparison, consumer plastic packaging reportedly take hundreds of years to degrade. The polymer is also found to be antimicrobial. The material can also be used as filament for 3D printing. Alibaba-funded Green Packaging Ecoinno is a Hong Kong-based green material company focused on providing alternatives to single-use plastics. It recently announced the closing of a US$6 million funding from Alibaba. The company plans to use the funds to begin industrial-scale production of its proprietary Green Composite Material (GCM) and to strengthen its material research and engineering platform to help meet pressing consumer packaging needs. Ecoinno has developed a patented Green Composite Material (GCM) and related processes, based 100% purely on natural plant fibres, an abundant, renewable, and naturally occurring polymer on earth. By repositioning nature's plant fibres, GCM harnesses the natural attributes of plant fibres. Notably it is 100% biodegradable in

the natural environment within 75 days and has extreme temperature tolerance (allowing freezing and oven reheating). GCM is also three times stronger than plastic and bioplastic in tensile strength. It is impermeable to oxygen, with an extremely low transmission rate, on par with even metal. The material is water and oil-resistance, and most importantly, has passed FDA tests to be toxic free. With its breakthrough GCM technology, Ecoinno aims to provide the global consumer and industry with an attractive and viable 'Third Option' that is a break-out from the traditional choice between petroleum-derived plastic and bio-plastic (consisting of mostly non-naturally occurring polymers) in a significant step towards creating a sustainable, circular economy.

Hong Kong's Hung Hing makes major investment Mediatama Perkasa is a family-owned offset printing company founded in 1994 by Director and Owner Sukirman Pardi. With its office and factory located near Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, the printer rapidly acquired customers and developed into the thriving business it is today. Chief Operating Officer Richard Lim of Hung Hing describes the company's growth this way: "In the 1950s, Hung Hing had only a few employees, but today we have more than 8,000. We have grown from a tiny firm to running seven plants today in mainland China, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Our business covers packaging for overseas use as well as for domestic use, including toys, foods and products such as daily necessities, cosmetics and skin care. We are also engaged in paper trading. Annual sales amount to more than 3.3 billon Hong Kong dollars (430 million US dollars)." The company also has a prominent place in commercial and publishing printing and is well known both in China and overseas.

In making Hung Hing the driving force in the printing market, the support of the premier manufacturer of printing presses is undeniable. Komori is that manufacturer. Not just creating trust Hung Hing provides the newest, most up-to-date printing technology to mid- and high-grade markets and meets the needs of diverse users and brand companies. Over the years, Hung Hing has installed more than 60 printing presses. When replacing old machines with new equipment, Hung Hing decides on the press after comprehensive research and analysis. In the beginning, the machines installed by Hung Hing were not Komori

presses However, the company has now installed seven Komori machines, from the 'granddaddy' four-color Lithrone S40 to the latest Impremia IS29 digital printing system, and is deepening its confidence as a loyal user of Komori presses. On this point Mr. Lim states, "With regard to service and cost, the nonKomori presses do not meet our current standard. In contrast, Komori actively provides services before the sale of a press and regularly updates us with the latest information on market trends. Komori's after-service is even greater, so they deliver customer kando in the true sense. Being close to Komori, we took a big step ahead of the competition."

energy, and protects the environment, thereby improving production efficiency, reducing costs and increasing competitiveness. The latest machine's high-level automation systems free up manpower and increase machine utilization from 25-30 percent to 35-40 percent. Looking ahead to digital technology from market trends According to the latest report from Smithers Pira, inkjet printing is becoming increasingly important and valuable in the digital printing arena. The market share of digital printing is expected to reach 21.1 percent by 2024. Regarding future trends in digital, Lim states: "Full-size machines will become mainstream in the industry, and customized printing may affect the entire small-lot printing market. The Komori Impremia NS40 is expected to open new pages in the industry, and the advantages of digital presses are becoming increasingly clear." Industry trends as seen in equipment replacement Increasing plant productivity, lowering costs, meeting customer needs consistently and maintaining the readiness to quickly introduce new technologies are critical requirements as packaging operations expand. Knowing that the future holds challenges, Hung Hing is tightening the reins in both corporate management and equipment acquisition in order to continue changing and meeting very demanding market needs. After drupa 2016, Hung Hing invested in an eight-color Lithrone GX40RP, and just before China Print 2017, the company acquired its second eightcolor Lithrone GX40RP equipped with H-UV. Moreover, in the same year, the company acquired an additional sevencolor Lithrone G40 with coater for package printing. In 2018, Hung Hing commissioned the latest nine-color Lithrone G44 IR/H-

Industry 5.0: The Future o The Factory of 2035 will look vastly different than the factory of today. Ever since the first Industrial Revolution when mechanisation, water, and steam power started to automate work previously carried out manually, more work has been taken on by machines. Each technological advancement – from computers and robotics to the Internet – has brought about additional automation. Advancement in technologies will remain significant, but the trend of "human touch" will also be in demand in Factory of 2035. People, machines and fear Today, internet-enabled "Industry 4.0” – including the robots that form a growing part of its connected technologies – has given rise to new fears that technology is replacing human workers. Representing Industry 4.0 as they do, robots are also bearing the brunt of the latest “technology is replacing us” myths. People have misconceptions that automation technologies and robots threaten people’s livelihoods. Automation does not replace jobs, in fact, it creates new jobs.

According to a recent Harvard Business Review article on automated tasks, 20% and 80% of a given job can involve automatable tasks, but no jobs are 100% automatable. This means that even with all the advancements, robots will not replace humans entirely. The fact is that robots help to increase productivity and companies are in the position to employ more people. Hence, robots will create jobs instead of eliminating them. A new type of factory The promise of the latest industrial revolution, Industry 4.0, is not just complete factory automation. Manufacturers move towards "light out factory" setups where they can produce goods people demand quickly, with consistently high quality, at unprecedented low cost, and with little human intervention. However, when

the ‘lights out factory’ has started to gain traction in actual manufacturing setups, different global consumer trend has emerged - The return of human touch in Industry 5.0. Mass demand for the human touch, or what is often described as “mass personalisation,” will never be met by large scale lights-out type manufacturing nor by traditional craftspeople working in their own small shops. Today, people want to experience the human touch in mass-manufactured goods. The type of factory needed to produce such goods at a scale and cost that makes production economically feasible will depend on technology. It is not the technology operating without human involvement in a lightsout factory. It will be the technology that collaborates with workers and, where the human touch is involved,

of Manufacturing in 2035

By: Darrell Adams, Head of Southeast Asia & Oceania, Universal Robots

needs millions of products that do not require any human touch in order to be valuable. There will also be many more Industry 5.0 factories in 2035, and these factories will employ workers, with uniquely human skills. Requiring uniquely human talents like creativity, artistry, materials and process understanding, discerning tastes, understanding of various customs, and complex judgement, these jobs will be nothing like the factory jobs we think of today. It will be jobs that defy the definition of work as "doing things I don't like to do", instead, people will love their jobs. These jobs and trends will help humanise labour and make the world a better place to work.

serves as a tool that enables the workers to contribute the value they add to the product. A new type of worker The workers who will be needed in these new setups are workers who have particular value to add to the product. They must have expertise in an area that is required to give the product the degree of human touch the market demands of it. They may practice a craft or use a discerning eye or other senses to assess work and make adjustments. They may have a special understanding of materials and manufacturing processes. They may be experts in the practice of creativity. What will not be needed are workers who spend their days performing boring, repetitive tasks, or dangerous work. Robots and other machinery can and will do this

work better. The days of the old-school line worker will be over. The factory job in 2035 In 2035, Industry 4.0 and lightsout factories will be a vital part of product manufacturing. The world

In the current global age, Industry 4.0 is a marriage of IT and manufacturing operations. We have seen the maturation of digital technologies in the manufacturing industry. The smart factories of 2035 will accommodate the new collaborative model. The collaboration between man and machines, in which robots do the strenuous and repetitive work while humans act as the "creative architects". Human creativity and smart technologies will become a decisive force in 2035.

EFI Nozomi White Ink achieves White UV LED inks for the EFI Nozomi C18000 single-pass inkjet printers has achieved the certification from the Western Michigan University (WMU) Recycling, Paper and Coating Pilot Plant, a leading certification organization for corrugated recycling. The certification verifies the recycling and repulpability of boards printed with white EFI Nozomi UV LED inks. The WMU Pilot Plant provided an OCC (old corrugated containers) certification to EFI Nozomi white inks, extending the research-driven evidence that Nozomi inkjet-printed corrugated boards can safely, efficiently and effectively enter recycling streams. This new certification follows the WMU Pilot Plant’s initial OCC certification provided for the EFI Nozomi C18000 printer’s CMYK four-color process ink set. According to EFI, the Nozomi inks are the first and only single-pass digital corrugated printer inks to achieve the certification, a key validation developed by modeling wax coating replacement protocols of the Fiber Boxboard Association, a group that represents approximately 95% of all U.S. corrugators. The ability to recycle digitally printed corrugated board remains an important topic as corrugators and boxmakers adopt single-pass inkjet to implement highly efficient supply chains that reflect their customers’ need for

customization quantities.

and

shorter

order

Given the prevalence of OCC in packaging, the certification is important to ensure that corrugated packaging is safely recycled. According to the American Forest & Paper Association, on average, a corrugated box contains roughly 50% recycled fiber. Around 51% of OCC is used to make new corrugated board, with 11.5% used for boxboard materials, such as cereal

boxes. An average of 92.3% of old corrugated containers are recycled according to AF&PA data, amounting to more than 32,000 tons worldwide. In fact, corrugated reaches higher sustainably levels than other packaging options. Most corrugated fibers are recycled up to seven times, and that reuse of resources is a strong example of how corrugators and packaging converters can contribute to the circular economy. “Sustainability is a key component of EFI’s R&D efforts, and this additional certification speaks to the growing opportunities the packaging industry has to adopt efficient, greener practices with corrugated board,” said Evandro Matteucci, vice president and general manager for EFI’s Packaging and Building Materials businesses. “The industry is already producing approximately five corrugated boxes per second worldwide using EFI Nozomi C18000 printers. With this new certification, Nozomi customers can be comfortable adding white ink to create premium boxes without worrying about any negative impact on

recyclability.” Greater versatility in digital corrugated printing with white ink Using EFI Nozomi white ink underneath process-color inks on corrugated boxes extends the color gamut Nozomi users can achieve and gives them the ability to accurately represent their clients’ brand colors on brown kraft board. The white ink also allows for accurate printing of

photographic images, including vivid designs, while maintaining the ecofriendly look of the brown board surface. Plus, Nozomi users can achieve a higher-value appearance for many jobs using white ink as a base under color designs, as it transforms the matte appearance of CMYK inks on uncoated boards into a highly attractive gloss. EFI UV LED low-odor inks are also GREENGUARD certified. They contain no hazardous volatile organic compounds and do not require vapor recovery. In addition, the print research institute Fogra has certified that the Nozomi C18000 is the most energyefficient printer in its class based on the ISO 20690 Energy Standard. Digital printing with the EFI Nozomi C18000 printer generates virtually no waste due to make-ready or rejects and rework, compared to analog flexo and litho lamination processes. All of this adds up to a smaller environmental footprint for packaging companies, while opening the door to new and profitable applications.

Printing Innovation Asia Issue 7 2020

s sustainability certification

The EFI Nozomi C18000 prints at up 246 linear feet (75 linear meters) per minute; it can produce up to 10,000 35x35-inch (890x890-mm) boards per hour two-up. Its in-line primer allows dot gain and ink absorption control over a range of corrugated top sheets. Users gain a distinct production advantage for cost-effective, ondemand and just-in-time jobs, fast-cycle proofs and prototypes, and customized

campaigns. EFI Nozomi C18000 direct-to-substrate, production-level digital printing reduces process steps and costs – eliminating the long, upfront make-ready times and plate costs required in analog processes. Many of the world’s leading pulp and paper companies, along with independent corrugators, boxmakers, and display graphics producers, rely on the EFI Nozomi C18000 for high-

graphic production. Several users have gained as much as 30% additional analog capacity by transitioning analog jobs to more-efficient production on their Nozomi C18000 printer. With installations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, it is the leading single-pass inkjet, direct-toboard corrugated printer.

A RETROSPECT IVE

56

After 17 years as a President & CEO, Werner M. Dornscheidt will retire from Messe Düsseldorf on 30 June 2020. The 66-year old Dornscheidt has served almost 37 years with the company. “Trade fairs are my life,” said Dornscheidt. “What we have built up together with my team over all those years benefits the company today. While conditions are difficult at present, it is comforting to know that ‘my’ company is in good hands. The team is already busy working on a re-start and developing further digital add-ons so that Messe Düsseldorf will also remain the successful, reputable company in future that it is today. I have made my contribution.” Profitable, subsidy-free management and financial stability are two trademarks of the Dornscheidt era. The Messe Düsseldorf Group closed the last full business year under his leadership with a sales increase of 28.7% to EUR 378.5 million (previous year: EUR 294 million). Group earnings after tax more than doubled in 2019 at EUR 56.6 million (previous year: EUR 24.3 million). In 2004 Dornscheidt took over as CEO of the company when the Messe Düsseldorf Group posted an ROI of 6.4% and a core capital ratio of 34.4%. Its ROI recently rose to 14.8% and its core equity ratio to 66%. All of these are the best prerequisites for buffering the effects of the Corona pandemic. In March, Messe Düsseldorf was forced to reschedule drupa 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new drupa dates are 20-30 April 2021. Replacing Dornscheidt is Wolfram N. Diener, who has served Messe Düsseldorf as Managing Director Operative Business since 2018. He will take over as CEO from 1 July 2020. Erhard Wienkamp and Bernhard J. Stempfle will complete the management team.

INTERNATIONALITY/FOREIGN BUSINESS

Internationality as a Win-Win Situation

Pioneered the Eastern business for Messe Düsseldorf in Moscow, expanded portfolios, extended international distribution structures, made Düsseldorf's No. 1 trade fairs more international

Werner Dornscheidt has decisively driven both these themes. While in 2004 Messe Düsseldorf had 65 foreign representatives for 104 countries, today 77 foreign representations look after 141 countries. The share of foreign exhibitors in Düsseldorf rose from 58% to the recent figure of 73.4% and the share of foreign visitors from 34% to 37.1%.

“All of these international guests benefit the city,” said Dornscheidt. According to a study by the Munichbased ifo Institute, Düsseldorf ’s trade fair and congress business alone generates annual sales worth EUR 2.98 billion across Germany (in Düsseldorf: EUR 1.66 billion), securing 27,692 jobs (16,664 in Düsseldorf) and producing EUR 567 million in additional tax revenue (EUR 36.3 million). Numerous sectors of industry depend on the events – such as skilled craftspeople, exhibition stand construction companies, catering, hospitality, retail and local public transport.

2019

Werner Dornscheidt, president and CEO of Drupa organiser Messe Düsseldorf, leaves end-June; new replacement appointed.

“I am delighted at the trust placed in me. We can perfectly build on Werner Dornscheidt’s achievements and jointly rise to the challenges ahead,” said Diener. “Here in Düsseldorf we boast an inimitable brand profile that can be made even more successful through the drivers that are internationalisation and digitalisation; and what’s just as important: a powerful team.”

year will see the completion of the new South Entrance with its 20 m high cantilevered roof measuring 7,800 square metres. “In time for re-booting trade fair operations in autumn Messe Düsseldorf will have a new architectural highlight in the offing,” said Dornscheidt. Up until the lockdown in March the adjacent Hall 1 had been fully booked from the outset. At the same time, Werner Dornscheidt also drove the further development of digital presentation possibilities. Messe Düsseldorf makes it possible for its exhibitors to showcase themselves and their products in a multi-media format and make contact with other industry representatives. Messe Düsseldorf is constantly working towards making their customers’ content more attractive and user-friendly. The digitalisation of the trade fair format itself has gone hand in hand with the digital transformation of the company as a whole. “On our online portals our trade fairs have long been in operation 365 days a year,” said Dornscheidt. “This pays off both during and after Covid-19.” EFI’s new software gives print and packaging businesses easy entry to fulfilment services EFI introduced a new, automated offering for printing and packaging businesses seeking growth by offering pick-and-pack fulfilment. INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT postponed to 2 – 5 June 2021 Set to occur in September this year, the event has been postponed to 2 – 5 June 2021 The Indonesian International Plastics, Packaging and Printing Exhibitions scheduled for September this year will be postponed to 2 – 5 June 2021. The venue remains unchanged at Jakarta International Expo (JIExpo), Indonesia. Organisers Messe Düsseldorf Asia deemed the rescheduling necessary with the continued fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “It was a difficult but necessary decision and after discussions with our Indonesian partners - WAKENI, we

felt it was in the best interest of all participants involved to postpone INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT to 2021. The health and safety of all stakeholders is our top priority. With the move to next year, we also believe this will place all participants in the co-related industries in a stronger position to carry over the successful status of the trade fair to 2021,” said Gernot Ringling, Managing Director, Messe Düsseldorf Asia. “We are committed to meeting the expectations of our partners, local and international exhibitors and trade visitors, and look forward to further nurturing these trusted relationships as we work together towards the 2021 edition,” he added. “We would like to thank all our industry partners, exhibitors, and registered visitors from all over the world who have stood by the trade fair as we make these difficult decisions and appreciate their continued support with the new dates. We are taking immediate steps to provide all parties with the required support necessary,” said Rini Sumardi, director of event co-organisers Wahana Kemalaniaga Makmur, PT (WAKENI). “We are pleased that together we were able to find suitable alternative dates in order to provide all those affected with reliability in planning,” she said. The INDOPLAS, INDOPACK and INDOPRINT team will reach out to all industry partners, confirmed exhibitors and participants regarding event logistics and planning.

Spandex, the one-stop supplier of innovative solutions to the sign, graphics and display industries is launching ImagePerfect SafeTouch, an antimicrobial laminate for use in environments where it’s important to minimise the spread of bacteria on surfaces. ImagePerfect SafeTouch (IP 2830-111) is an 80 micron clear film, available in gloss and matt finishes. The film incorporates the highly effective antimicrobial agent zinc pyrithione and delivers over 99.99% proven protection against the growth of a range of common bacteria, fungi and parasites. These include Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococcus aureus (Golden Staph), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA),

Salmonella, Listeria, Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella pneumophila. The antimicrobial agents are encapsulated in the film layer rather than being applied as a coating. This ensures that the product’s protective properties are preserved even with regular abrasive cleaning, delivering guaranteed protection for three years. The product is designed for interior flat applications such as markings and decorations, counters, desks and doors in environments requiring high levels of hygiene, for example retail spaces, public transport, healthcare and education settings, hospitality and leisure businesses, and event locations. The anti-microbial laminate inhibits the growth of microbes on the surface by depriving them of the conditions they need to survive and spread. Thanks to its clean-peel, semipermanent, solvent-based adhesive, ImagePerfect SafeTouch is suitable for direct application to surfaces. The film’s high transparency means that the natural aesthetic of the original surface can be retained. It can also be used for over-lamination of printed surfaces, after 48-hour ink drying time. ImagePerfect SafeTouch is fully resistant to frequent cleaning with solvents such as 70.0% ethanol, 0.1% IPA and 5.0% benzalkonium chloride. Stefano Nigrone, Director of ImagePerfect at Spandex, explains: “ImagePerfect SafeTouch gives customers an important new choice – the maximum level of anti-microbial

protection, guaranteed for three years, with the application flexibility of a PVC material and a solventbased adhesive, at a competitive price point. Ultimately, this will help more businesses to safeguard their staff and customers by adding bacterial protection to a variety of surfaces, at a time when public sensitivity around hygiene has never been higher.” ImagePerfect SafeTouch has been independently tested by 3A Laboratori (accredited UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025, and certified UNI EN ISO 9001). The product will be available from stock from July 2020.

64 “The launch of Secure IPP Print Server is in direct response to our clients’ requests Solimar Systems, Inc., provider of leading workflow solutions for print production and digital communications, has today launched Secure IPP Print Server™ for digital print environments. The server delivers support for encrypted data transmission using the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) in addition to enabling print job optimization and workflow automation. This flexible solution enables companies to better comply with data security regulations, policies and best practices including GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation and CCPA, the California Consumer Privacy Act. It is commonplace for host systems to transmit data to printers over unencrypted channels using protocols like LPR, IPDS, shared folders and JMF/JDF. Secure IPP printing leverages on-the-fly data encryption to protect print content from network “sniffers” that can expose sensitive information embedded in print data. In addition, Secure IPP Print Server™ provides more granular feedback on job status than alternative workflows, allowing systems that support IPP to provide more accurate and timely information about the actual disposition of work. “Governments have been busy tightening rules around the handling of consumer data to better protect the public against accidental or

criminal data breaches. Everyone handling personal information has to be prepared to exercise reasonable caution to protect that information from disclosure risks,” commented Jonathan Malone-McGrew, Senior Director of Engagement at Solimar Systems. “Secure IPP Print Server provides users with a means to do this, enabling them to operate with complete, end-to-end workflow security. The system also benefits from Solimar’s renowned expertise in job tracking, reporting, as well as streamlining and reducing workflow inefficiencies, when integrated with other cutting-edge Solimar solutions.” For nearly 30 years, Solimar Systems has been delivering solutions to organizations that process high volumes of sensitive, personal data. These solutions provide missioncritical workflow capabilities in secure environments. They feature granular, rights-based access controls, as well as password-based document controls such as PDF encryption. Secure IPP Print Server leverages these reliable, comprehensive systems and incorporates new functionality to ensure an increased level of data security. “The launch of Secure IPP Print Server is in direct response to our clients’ requests for help to better secure digital content and documents in transactional and variable data print workflows,” says Mary Ann Rowan, Chief Experience Officer at Solimar Systems. “At present, printing is too often vulnerable to gaps in end-toend security. This print server can run

as an automated, ‘lights out’ service, securing incoming and outgoing print data, providing governments, enterprises and print service providers around the globe with additional confidence in the security of their production processes.”

SINGAPORE - THAILAND - INDIA - MALAYSIA - JAPAN - HONG KONG - CHINA - KOREA - TAIWAN - VIETNAM - INDONESIA - SRI LANKA - PHILIPPINES - CAMBODIA - MYNAMAR The annual Asian Print Awards was founded to recognise outstanding achievement in the print and packaging industries across Asia. With more than half the world’s population represented in this fast growing area, communication in the form of printed matter links Asia’s diverse cultures. It is imperative that such print achievements do not go unrecognised, especially among the population base that Asia enjoys. The Awards are judged on a wholly quality-oriented set of criteria to ensure that fair play is enacted at all times. The Independent Judging Panel comprises highly qualified personnel from within Asia and around the world. The independent judging panel has no knowledge of the actual entrants details. ALL ENTRIES ARE NUMBER-CODED. Entries must be commercially produced work. The Asian Print Awards is the only regional print quality competition of its kind in Asia. Supported by leading industry-supply companies, any progressive quality print house should enter and prove that they are the best - by winning the Gold, Silver or Bronze award. Proving pride in quality awareness is what customers love to see. It’s not just empty words, you can prove it.
