LIZ MOAD’S QUILLING MASTERCLASS

Frilly summer blooms GET YOUR GROOVE ON WITH RETRO PRINTS TO MAKE A PUNCHY FLORAL SET Fringed or ‘frilly’ flowers are guaranteed to wow everyone! They are deceptively easy to make and you don’t need a specialist tool to achieve the look – instead, long strips of paper are snipped into and coiled. The best part is that you can make a whole selection of differently sized blooms with interesting colour schemes simply by sticking lengths together. Gift wrap is ideal for making these flowers, and with lots of pretty patterns available on the high street, they’re very easy on your purse!

Happy quilling, Liz x

3mm in on one long edge. Fold the strip four times and add a bulldog clip to the pencilled edge. Cut across the strip at 1mm intervals until the whole section is fringed. Repeat this process with purple paper, 2.5cm x 30cm. Take an orange quilling strip, 40cm, and glue to the end of the purple fringed piece at the uncut margin. Start coiling tightly from the orange paper, then glue the end in place and put aside. Attach purple, 40cm, to the patterned fringed paper and coil. Use your fingers to ruffle both flowers out and use a bone folder to curl the lengths. Glue the smaller flower on top of the other. Measure 13cm down the side of a purple blank, 13cm x 18cm,

Fold over and attach a 9cm turquoise square to the panel. Stick patterned paper to the back and front of the card, then glue the flower to the front. Write ‘Thank You’ on turquoise and secure below.

squares from a variety of red, white and blue printed fabrics. Lay all the squares out in rows of four until you are happy with the arrangement, then sew the patches together, row by row. Press the seams, ensuring each row is pressed the opposite way to the previous row so the seams will nest together. Cut 14 count waste canvas to the size of a square and tack to a white one, making sure it aligns with the edges. Follow the boat chart from our pattern pages and stitch over one block of waste canvas. Use two strands of cotton and cross-stitch. When complete, dampen the waste canvas and carefully draw out the threads one by one. Repeat on another square.

Iron fusible webbing onto the back of red fabric and trace eight stars onto it. Cut them out carefully and place onto the remaining white squares. Peel off the paper backing and iron in place. Sew around the edges using

red embroidery thread and blanket stitch. Trim the edges of the quilt to neaten. Place backing fabric, 12.5” x 15.5”, wrong side up. Lay wadding on top, followed by the quilt top facing upwards. Pin the layers

TWEEZERS ARE REALLY USEFUL FOR DRAWING OUT THREADS WHEN CROSS-STITCHING

Stitching

“If you want to use the boat motif for something else, how about decorating bathroom towels?” Helen Phillips, Designer together with curved tacking pins. Quilt by stitching along the seams in a simple grid and around the stars. Quilt a circle behind the boat cross-stitch motifs. When complete, make binding by cutting 2.5” strips of fabric. Join them together until you have enough to fit around the quilt edge with 3” extra. Fold the binding in half and press, then pin to the edge of the quilt, sewing it in place and making

a neat join. Turn the binding over and hand stitch it down on the back of the quilt. Add a blue striped button to the quilt to finish.

Follow the boat chart and stitch over one block of Aida. Use two strands of thread for the cross-stitch. Sew a line of running stitch around the motif using one strand. When complete, trim

the design two holes away from the running stitch. Back the motif with white card using double-sided tape. Cut white card, 6.5cm x 7cm, and cover the front with blue and white striped paper. Stamp some stars randomly on the right-hand side in red ink. Matt the boat onto red card, then add to the left-hand side. Thread bakers twine through the tag to finish. CB
