In The Spotlight

at home with

JULIE &WENDY TV presenters Julie Peasgood and Wendy Turner-Webster from Crafty Beggars get spruced up for some Easter crafting...

Crafty Beggars is the brand new TV show that puts the competition into crafts. TV presenters and dedicated crafters Julie Peasgood and Wendy Turner-Webster produce as well as host the show, and when they’re not busy filming, are never far away from a pot of glue and a pair of scissors!

Spring Cleaning

Wendy: One night I had a dream about a rainbow melting and the pot of gold splashed its magic onto all the Easter bunnies. Unlike most dreams this one was quite useful as it was my inspiration to create some melted crayon art. I wanted to have a go at this for ages but was trying to think of a creative spin. My dream of golden bunnies was just the idea I was looking for.

THIS IS THE TIME OF YEAR WHEN A LOT OF TIME IS TAKEN UP WITH THE MAKING OF CRAFTY BEGGARS, BUT WE STILL FIND DAYS FOR OUR OWN CRAFTING PROJECTS. WHEN THE GLUE STARTS TO FLOW, WE ARE REMINDED INSTANTLY WHY CREATING SOMETHING WITH OUR OWN FAIR HANDS NEVER FAILS TO PUT A SPRING IN OUR STEP.

{

It’s a crafter’s paradise to have all one’s supplies and materials in their own special room. Just visualise a little slice of this heaven – jars of colour coded buttons standing shoulder to shoulder and a vast array of pristine tools in a clearly labelled set of drawers. This room is your sanctuary... close the door and woe betide anyone who distracts you from your task, or even worse, messes with your kit! Well, it’s good to dream about the perfect craft room but now that spring is finally here we are determined to organise our nightmare of crafting jumble into a Crafty Beggars workspace that dreams are made of. The space we have in mind for this spectacular spring clear out is Wendy’s garage. No car is ever going to live there and with its vaulted ceiling it reminds us of a giant beach hut. Well, it will remind us of a giant beach hut when we’ve finished with it. At the moment however, it’s home to a mountain of random crafting stuff, not to mention a plentiful supply of big hairy spiders, which, incidentally, both of us are terrified of! Julie was bitten by a false widow spider last year but that’s another story. Suffice to say that before we begin whitewashing the walls and sorting out those buttons, our jam jars will be put to good use with the rescue of some scarily large eightlegged creatures. But of course we can’t be expected to clean, clean, clean and not do any crafting. Everyone knows that ‘all cleaning and no crafting’ makes for a very dull existence! So, inspired by the first whiff of spring and all things Easter related, we’ve both been busy driving our husbands mad by leaving craft projects scattered over the kitchen table...

{

Julie: Obviously one shouldn’t play with matches but I’ve had great fun playing around with the boxes. The pleasure of lighting candles increases significantly when the match is pulled from a special box of your own creation and they are also a great storage idea for lots of things, like a special pair of earrings, a spare key or some emergency pound coins.

HOUSE CARD Create, score and fold a white stepper card using the template on the pattern pages. Stick light green to the bottom strip using double-sided tape. Add green to the middle level and dark green to the top. Trim yellow zig zag paper to the width of the central panel, 12cm high. Fix to the front. Trim a roof from patterned lilac, cut a small spotty blue rectangle, stick to the right, and mount the section to the house top. Die-cut a fence from white card, a bird house from blue and a small bird from yellow patterned paper. Layer both onto the fence over their matching motifs. Adhere foam pads to the outer posts only and mount to the front. Make six hearts using the middle pieces of the bird die and stick to the light green panel. Embellish each with gold gems. Tie yellow ribbon through the top of a seed packet, then slot it behind the fence.

Don't want to emboss the bird? Add clear nail varnish on top to achieve a glossy look

SEED GREETING Mount pink circles paper to the front of an A6 blank. Trim yellow zig zag paper slightly smaller, round the corners, then stick to the card. Cut five white strips, 3cm wide, and snip the tops of each into a point. Trim one strip to 9cm, two to 7.5cm and the final two to 6.5cm. Cut a further two narrow panels, 2cm wide, then assemble the strips to create a fence. Stick foam pads to the outer posts and fix to the front.

Colour a wooden bird using a dark blue ink-pad. Build up the tone and highlight its face with light blue, then emboss using clear powder. Stick to the fence using foam pads and embellish each fence panel with two gold gems. Tie blue ribbon through the top of a seed packet and slot behind the fence to finish. CB

WORKSHOP

Stitch

Craft tip If you want your tidy to be cushioned, stitch in a layer of wadding between the front and back panels

“FOR ME, SEWING IS AS MUCH ABOUT THE FABRIC AS THE MAKING, SO I HAD A LOT OF FUN CHOOSING WHICH PRINTS AND PATTERNS TO SELECT FOR MY BOOK'S PROJECTS” Cath Kidston

Coming next time... Sew a vintage throw for the summer months

Cut a back panel from floral fabric, 52cm x 72cm. Create a patchwork front panel to the same size, stitching various squares together. Sew a patchwork pocket, 17cm x 52cm. Press each piece, then press under 1cm along the top edge of the pocket and machine stitch, 6mm from the fold. Position the pocket along the bottom edge of the front panel, both pieces right side up. Pin and tack the side and bottom edges of the pocket to the front panel. With right sides together, place the front panel over the back one so the pocket is sandwiched between. Pin together along the side and bottom edges. Stitch, taking a 1cm

seam allowance, and clip the corners. Press the seams inwards, then press under 1cm along the top. Turn out, ease out the seams and corners, and press. Pin the front and back top edges together, then sew using a 6mm seam allowance. Draw two vertical lines on the pocket, one halfway along and the other 10cm from the left edge. Pin the three layers together so they don’t shift, and stitch along the lines. Reinforce the top end of each seam with a few reverse stitches. Sew along the first edge and stop at the end of the seam allowance. With the needle still down, lift the presser foot and turn the

fabric 90 degrees. Lower the foot and sew along the second edge. Trim two small triangles from the seam allowance. Turn out, ease out the corner with a knitting needle, and press. CB
