card underneath, then cover the whole design with a thick coating of varnish and allow it to soak into the paper. Once it takes on a see-through appearance, wipe off the excess varnish with kitchen roll and leave to dry. Paint the back of a wooden heart in Sweet Basil and the front in Aged White. You will need a heart with pre-drilled holes at the top, or you can make them yourself, though be sure to remove any paint from the insides using a needle so it doesn’t dry and block off the access. Cut out the scroll, then cover the back in PVA and stick to the front of the heart. Alternatively, paint the scroll directly onto the heart using the template as a guide. Add the fork and earth in brown and grey shades. Paint the rest of the heart using basil.

Use a white POSCA pen for the stems, then paint white cloud-like circles to the tops for rose heads. Build up curved pink lines until all the blooms are complete. Fix rustic twine through the holes to finish. For outside use, spray matt varnish in a well-ventilated area.

square card pieces: mount pink card, 13.5cm, to green, 14.1cm, then adhere to a blank, 14.7cm. Print out three birthday panels and trace stems, leaves and roses onto each using a pencil before painting on flower heads, five on each strip. Take a green ProMarker pen and gently colour the panel backgrounds, leaving a little gap all the way around the roses, then shade the leaves. The ink will bleed a little so keep the pressure light. Colour the scrolls in Vanilla. Use a white gel pen to add veins on the leaves, then mount the panels to white card. Cut out and adhere to the blank using foam pads.

and the rest in Sweet Basil. Print, varnish and stick on a long scroll design, following the same process as for the heart. Mark the panel into position first using a pencil. Fill the front in with Sweet Basil and add flower designs as before. Leave to dry, then place shredded kraft paper into the trug to cushion the gifts you will put inside. Next, copy and paint a ‘Happy Birthday’ scroll, then cut out. Round the corners of a small pink card rectangle, punch a hole at the top, then mount the scroll to the middle. Thread embellished pink ribbon through the hole and tie to the trug for a gift tag. Add the tools, card, the heart hanger and a packet of seeds to complete this gift set. CB

Patchwork Coasters

Use the hexagon on our pattern pages to make a template, then use it to create seven shapes from paper. Secure one to red apple fabric using a pin and cut out a hexagon shape, leaving a
7mm border around each side. Repeat to make two more red ones, three from checked green and one from garden sentiments material. Fold the fabric around each paper hexagon and tack into place with

contrasting threads. Arrange the shapes using the picture as a guide and sew them right sides together using small whip stitches. Press the patchwork and remove the tacking stitches and paper, leaving the hexagons folded in at the edges. Cut waste canvas to cover the central hexagon and tack into place. Following the chart on our pattern pages, stitch an apple and a bee to the centre of the shape using two strands of cotton for the cross-stitch and one for the backstitch. When the design is complete, dampen the waste canvas and carefully remove the threads before pressing. Place the patchwork facedown onto green felt and pin together. Stitch two rows around the outer edges and one to the central shape of the coaster using white thread. Trim away the excess felt. To make a bee and beehive button coaster, sew a bee only to the central hexagon, then add a beehive button. This coaster uses red check and green apple fabrics.

Tack waste canvas to the middle of the circle. Follow the chart for the apple and bee and stitch over one block of waste canvas using two strands of cotton. Once complete, dampen the canvas and draw out the threads. Press, then use it to cover a jam lid and secure with an elastic band. Fix bakers twine over the band and in a bow to finish. CB

Corinne’s Craft Space “Making small things means that there’s half a chance of finding somewhere to put it ” Corinne Bradd talks miniature crafts and shares her latest woodland delights
“T
here is simply not enough wall space in my house to display all of the beautiful pieces I’ve gathered over the years. Subsequently I have cardboard boxes in the shed full of art in frames that are unlikely to see the light of day in the next decade. Nothing’s that big – I’ve learnt that there is nowhere to hang anything larger than A3, so the collection is mainly small, detailed pieces that can fit between bookshelves or in that peculiar alcove that seems to serve no purpose (we’ve all got them!). I’ve learned to embrace the tiny. A few years ago, I would have embarked on a 3ft square collage; these days I tend to opt for art in miniature. It has its upsides, because most projects can be completed in a day and you can always find a scrap of paper or fabric big enough. Making things on a smaller scale also means that there’s half a chance of finding somewhere to put it. I’m currently envisaging a floor to ceiling display of random but interesting prints along the passageway... once I’ve found somewhere else to put the furniture that is.
Corinne x
There’s more where that came from…
Mini Shadow Box I’ve got a big shoebox of pretty paper scraps for those ‘just in case’ moments. Mini papercut pictures are a great way to lift them into the light. Cut a rectangle of thick mountboard and four strips, 2.5cm wide, to fit

around the edges. Cover the pieces with patterned paper and use a thick PVA to fix the strips around the rectangle to make a deep frame. Add washi tape to strengthen the joins. Fix a hanging loop to the back of the frame. Trim a small deer silhouette from brown paper and sponge with darker ink, adding details with a fineliner. Glue the deer to the inside of the frame. Cut several tall triangles of paper in shades of green. Clip into the slanted edges of the triangles to create fir trees, crease in half and glue to the base of the frame, overlapping for a more natural look. Cut pointed fringes into narrow strips of green paper. Curl the strips gently and glue in front of the trees. Make tiny toadstools from small red cap shapes fixed onto short stems of brown paper. Add decoration with a white fineliner pen and glue to the foreground. CB

Stamp and emboss an apple, lemon, orange and peach onto white, colour in and trim. Cut two polaroids: one in white, another in black. Adhere the fruit onto the black centre so they overlap the edges. Trim away the excess. Stick lime paper to an A6 blank at an angle. Remove the excess, attach the white polaroid outer and insert the fruit. Stamp a sentiment. Tie twine around the top. Add three pieces of washi tape and finish with black gems for eyes.
Bananas 4 U!
Print and emboss five bananas onto white. Colour in and cut out using a die. Trim along one edge of honeycomb paper, following the lines. Trim to 7cm x 12.5cm and fix across a white blank, 12.5cm square. Secure the bananas in a row, tucking the top of each under the edge of the paper. Tie two lengths of twine around the card. Create a sentiment, cut into an arrow, matt onto black and fix to the right. Add black gems for banana eyes.
Totally Sweet
Stamp and emboss two cherries and two leaves onto white. Colour in and cut out using corresponding dies. Trim a 7.5cm circle from white. Print two stalks onto it and fix the cherries and leaves with foam tape. Stamp a sentiment. Matt onto a black circle. Add black gems to the eyes and clear ones around the words. Stick a strip of lime to the left of an A6 blank. Cover the right side with red. Tie twine around the left of the lime and adhere the circle on top. CB

In the Spotlight
JULIE & WENDY TV crafters Julie Peasgood and Wendy Turner-Webster share painting tips in this month’s fun peek into their world Julie: I am completely smitten with Annie Sloan’s chalk paints, which are proving wonderful for transforming everything from an old pine stool to concrete and metal. Not only do they dry incredibly quickly, but there’s no priming required, which is heaven if you hate preparation and are always itching to get down to the fun part like I am! And of course they’re water-based, meaning it’s easy to clean up afterwards. I sealed the paints with wax and mixed in some darker wax to age it slightly. I didn’t actually need a paintbrush for the decoration on the little storage jars, I used some glass painting pens straight onto the glass – the Nutty Putty monkeys and palm trees are optional!
Julie and Wendy have been monkeying around in the Mexican jungle and we will soon see their adventures brought to the screen. The talented duo’s achievements don’t just extend to presenting Crafty Beggars – they’re also accomplished fund raisers and are excited about the launch of their new show, Julie and Wendy’s Monkey Business in September. In between jetting around the world and craft show commitments, they’ve found time to share a little recreational crafting with us.
{
Well we’ve ditched the popcorn in favour of monkey nuts and at 6pm on Sunday 27th September, we will be glued to the Community Channel. We’ll no doubt be sipping a few delicious Spider Monkey cocktails too, kindly created by Joe Allen’s restaurant in honour of The Jungle Place, the spider monkey sanctuary in Mexico, which is our company’s chosen charity. Together with Alphabet Pie (creators of versatile Nutty Putty) we have shot ‘Wendy and Julie’s Monkey Business’ to raise awareness. It will have ten showings in total on the channel, so do catch us if you can! Meanwhile, we have both been painting furiously – Julie has been rediscovering the joys of upcycling old pine furniture, whilst Wendy has been discovering an amazing painting app on her phone and wielding her paintbrush to support another favourite charity.
Join us!
OF COURSE YOU COULD TRY HEADING TO THE KEYBOARD FOR A PAINTING TO BE PROUD OF – I TURNED A PHOTO OF A ROSE INTO A ‘PAINTING’ WITH THE HELP OF AN APP ON MY PHONE! (THE STUDIO FUNCTION ON MY SAMSUNG NOTE 4)
{
Wendy: The wonderful thing about painting is that you can create something worthy of a wall even if you haven’t been born with paintbrushes in place of fingers… buy a blank canvas and cover it with some bold paint splatters and you’ll see what I mean! Painting isn’t really my strong point, but I was quite pleased with this oil painting I did for the Born Free Foundation as part of a fund raising auction (but crikey it took such a long time to dry!).
