Corinne’s Craft Space “Make it bright and unique, add a simple buckle clasp and stitch on a strong leather strap” Corinne Bradd chats about her perfect bag and makes a festival-ready cross-body satchel

“I

do love a nice bag. Nothing too expensive; I prefer to keep my money inside my bag, not to spend on it, just something neat and a bit different. Surprisingly I tend to keep all the important stuff like keys, phone and money in jeans pockets and my bag is often left in the boot of my car because I can’t be bothered to carry it around. Cross-body bags are the ideal solution, especially small ones that will hold your essentials. They’re perfect for festivals as they’ll leave your hands free for waving in the air like you just don’t care while still staying firmly attached to you in a crowd. Make it bright and unique, add a simple buckle clasp and stitch on a strong leather strap.”

There’s more where that came from... Add another to your collection by stitching a tote I made for Make It Today! Magazine, issue 14. Perfect for using up a fat quarter bundle!

1 8cm. Sew five of them, right sides

Cut lots of fabric rectangles, 4cm x

together, into a strip. Take another five, cut one piece in half and sew together as before, putting the halves at the ends. Stitch the two strips together so they make a ‘brick’ pattern. Continue sewing strips and stitching them together in this way to make a panel, 24cm x 35cm.

2 thin wadding and brightly coloured Press, then pin the patchwork onto

backing fabric. Topstitch the layers in a diamond pattern before using the template on our pattern pages to cut out the bag shape. Make several 3cm wide backing fabric strips and sew end-to-end to create a binding strip. Stitch this around the raw edges of the patchwork and fold over to bind.

3 wadding and backing and bind Cut a front panel from fabric,

together in the same way. Sew the two sections together using backstitch, sewing along the edges of the binding to disguise the stitching. Secure a buckle to the centre front of the bag and add a leather strip to the flap to fasten, sewing in place with several strands of thread.

4 gluing lengths together if necessary Cut a strip of leather, 2cm wide,

to achieve a long enough piece. Cut a similar length strip of backing fabric, 4cm wide, fold the sides to the middle and press. Clip the fabric to the leather, wrong sides together, and topstitch 3mm in from each long edge, stopping 2cm from each end. Clip the ends of the leather into a curve, fold them under the fabric strip and glue. Hand stitch the ends of the strap to the sides of the bag. CB

Crafts Tip

b Felt: coloured, white b Fabric, blue patterned b Thread, various colours b Twine, coloured, 15cm b Wooden embroidery hoop b Toy stuffing b Interfacing, iron-on b Scissor snips b Fabric glue

Use snips to cut out tiny pieces, they’ll create more accurate shapes than fabric scissors

See our shopping list below

Rainbow hoop

1 ring of an embroidery hoop Draw around the inside

onto iron-on-interfacing, then cut an inch around the outside of that line, to create a larger circle. Iron the interfacing onto the back of patterned fabric and cut out the bigger shape. Using the template, draw and cut out each shape from felt. Lay the pieces in place on the circle, using the hoop as a frame. Pin or glue the shapes in place, then machine sew using various coloured threads. Add the clouds to each end of the rainbow, and stitch in place. Press the piece, then insert it into the hoop. Pull the fabric tightly, then use the metal fixture to secure it. Once you are happy with the positioning trim any excess threads, then add a piece of twine to the hoop for hanging.

Painterly ways

ou don’t need to be Picasso to make a statement with paint – all you need is a little inspiration and guidance to start your artistic journey! Painting something to feature in your home is very special and can bring a family together in a beautiful way. When I was 14, my mum decided that a great way for me to spend my summer holiday was to help her decorate the kitchen ceiling. She wanted birds, so we painted a pink and blue sky with a warm yellow sun, then I stencilled on lots of swallows. Ten years later and the ceiling is still the same!

Start with... b Plain terracotta pots b White chalk paint b Acrylic paint, various colours b Paintbrush

paint a trio of pots Paint a pot white, then pour paint into a bowl and add a little water. Mix a little coloured acrylic into it to create a pale shade. Load a brush and apply a wide stripe around the pot, just down

from the rim. Add a little more colour to the paint, then position another stripe below the first. Continue in this way, darkening the mixture each time to create an ombré effect.
