LIZ MOAD’S QUILLING MASTERCLASS
Vegetable Patch
HOW DOES OUR GARDEN GROW? WITH PRETTY QUILLS ALL IN A ROW! Summer veg made from quilled paper strips are just the cutest miniatures around! They appeal to all ages and suit many special occasions such as retirement and birthdays. These radishes, peas and snails are created by coiling lengths and doming them, making these easy projects incredibly satisfying for crafters of all skill levels. The size of the cup shape depends on the number of lengths glued end-to-end, so the longer the strip the larger the shape will be.
Happy quilling, Liz x
Start with... Quilling papers: red, pink, brown, light brown, 3mm; green, 2mm Card: green, pink, brown, cream Paper: Basic Grey Herbs and Honey; plain green Quilling tool Mini Mold tool

end-to-end, then stick a 20cm light pink length to one end. Fix a 3cm pink length at a right angle close to the end. Quill from the bottom of the long pink strip to make a tight coil, then glue the end in place. Make a radish top from three 45cm red lengths and a 20cm one. Attach two small green strips at one end at right angles. Coil tightly so that the green stalks are in the centre of the coil. Place the top and bottom coils onto a Mini Mold dome, then gently push them over the shape with your fingers. Remove

the cups, then coat the insides of both generously with glue and leave to dry. Adhere both cups together, then attach a thin strip of red around the centre to both hide the join and to give support. Cut two leaf shapes from green paper by hand. Draw veins onto the leaves using a Pastel Beige ProMarker pen, then glue them to the radish stalks to finish.

Gift Box Decorate a green box by attaching three radishes, a mini wooden spool with string and a plant marker with 'Happy Birthday' written on it. Wrap raffia around the box to finish.
Liz says...
“If you don’t have a Mini Mould tool, use your finger or a pen lid to push the centre of the coil up”

Fresh talent
Gillian Arnold, an artist and surface pattern designer with her own label, has just concluded a workshop series taking eight young designers from their initial concepts all the way through to producing a finished product. Sessions were conducted twice weekly from Gillian’s studio in Bishop Auckland. Each designer left with a finished range of products using their own ideas, with which they are able to set up their own online business and advertise. Visit gillianarnold.co.uk for more information.

Greenhouse & The Tool Shed Collage-a-Card set. Before folding along the score lines to construct the shed, create a bespoke collage. Pop out all the desired images from the elements sheet and carefully fix into place. Make sure to work on the inside of the shed; the notice board should be on the back and the paint splodges appear on the front. Stick the blue work bench with foam pads to provide dimension, then add a selection of tools, some with foam pads, others with glue to give a variety of depths. Include a Happy Father’s Day sentiment on the tool rack, within the shed. Once you are happy with the arrangement, pop out the die-cut edge of the door from its frame, and lift. Fold the shed base card at all the scored fold lines, and fix the tabbed edge in place on the inside using double-sided tape. To finish stick the ‘Dad’s Tool Shed Enter at your own risk’ sentiment into place above the shed door with a large foam pad. The printed notice board at the back of the shed can be used to write your personal message. CB

GET CRAFTY CAREER ADVICE FROM SOME OF THE MAKERS WHO HAVE TURNED A PASSION INTO THEIR JOB The saying goes, 'do a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life', and we're inclined to agree, especially when it comes to crafty start-ups! Read on for some inspiring stories from people who have taken a hobby and created a job that they love to do, every day. Plus, find out how you could do it, too.
Folksy Camilla works for Folksy, the UK's most popular site for independently crafted and designed gifts and supplies. She also knows just what it takes to turn a craft into a career...
My mother is a ceramicist and when I was growing up she had her studio at home and a kiln in our cellar. Watching her work has given me an incredible respect for the skill, knowledge and determination you need to be a professional maker. After graduating with a degree in Art History, I worked as a freelance sub-editor, but when the recession hit, I moved back to my hometown of Sheffield. I came up with the idea of a homewares brand that told a different story with each piece. This became Butterscotch & Beesting, the tale of an imaginary, magical circus told through ceramics and textiles. The highpoint was when Liberty placed an order; selling there had been my goal when I started out, but I found it really hard to grow. I still made all my products myself and I couldn’t physically make enough pieces to supply everyone and, because everything was made by hand, I couldn’t give retailers the guarantee that every product would be exactly the same. It was when I was trying to work out how to tackle this that I had a conversation with James Boardwell. He founded Folksy in 2008 because he wanted to offer British designers and makers a way to reach mainstream audiences without having to pay a huge commission.
He gave me loads of advice; that I should stay niche, focus on one thing and grow my fanbase. I now write and commission selling tips for the Folksy blog, interview makers for our Meet the Maker series and write our newsletter, to help spread the word about Folksy and our wonderful makers. Butterscotch & Beesting has been put in the back seat for now. I like to think it’s just on hold while I concentrate on using the experiences I’ve had growing my own business to help other makers become more successful. Draw inspiration from your garden with Jecelyn Latimer’s ideas
S
ometimes it feels like the world rushes by in a blur of work and responsibilities, but it’s important to slow down every now and then and take some time to focus on something creative. Gardening is not only relaxing, it’s also great for your health and allows you to make a gradual difference to a space that will eventually blossom into a thing of beauty. Gardens are also great for inspiring other creative interests, so I’ve gathered an array of projects and ideas to get you going.

fashion a flower wreath The best things in life are free, and this wreath made using foraged florals from your garden certainly falls into this category! This project would be a perfect tabletop decoration for a summer garden party, and the best part is that it takes no time at all to make! Simply weave dried grasses together into a ring and position freshly cut blooms around one side. You could even dust the petals with glitter for a glam look. Once you’re done, pop a vase filled with more flowers in the centre of the wreath to finish.

Add red candle dye to make it pink and gently stir. Pour the wax into a sundae glass, leaving a gap of 2cm at the top. Melt white candles as before and remove the wicks. Add brown dye to make a chocolate colour. Leave the molten wax to cool for a few minutes, then whisk until opaque and to the consistency of whipped cream. Make a ball using an ice-cream scoop, then leave it to set in the tool and resting on greaseproofpaper. Leave the pink wax until the surface is opaque, then melt more white candles. your fingers and place it onto greaseproof-paper. Allow the wax to cool for a few minutes, then whisk as before. Carefully add the whipped wax over the top of the pink. Leave for five minutes, then place the brown wax scoop in the centre. Leave the wax to set for an hour, then heat a skewer and push it gently but firmly through the centre of the brown wax and down to the bottom of the glass. Insert the wick. Roll mouldable red wax in your hands to make a cherry. Pierce a hole through the centre. Thread the wick through the cherry and trim to 2cm tall.

Papercutting
1 download the A4 template. Go to our website and
Print onto good quality paper, suitable for papercutting: 160gsm in cream or ivory is perfect. Position the template on a self-healing mat. Using a craft knife or scalpel, begin to cut away the grey areas of the design, making sure that you keep the tip of the blade steady and working in even strokes. Using your other hand, carefully hold the template onto the cutting mat and cut pulling the blade away from your fingers. To avoid the blade snagging the paper as you are cutting, change it every 15 minutes, this will ensure that you’re always working with a sharp blade. When the papercutting is completed, carefully lift it onto A4 coloured card; this will help the design stand out clearly against the darker background. CB
