“I always knew I would have a creative career” SAMMY CLARIDGE
Sew Crafty has always been a family business. My mum and I still work together most days, even though she is semi-retired, and my dad helps out with the business side. Although he isn’t on the payroll, my husband, Steve, is our unofficial tech support. He makes sure our gadgets are running smoothly.
W
e chat to Sammy Claridge, owner of the beautiful online haberdashery, Sew Crafty. Find out what a day in the life of this creative business lady is like, the challenges she faced starting her company, and the joy of doing a job she loves. I wake up around 8am, check my emails and have a quick scroll through Instagram! The first work task of the day is checking orders, then I get admin and boring financial bits out of the way. A quick lunch is usually followed by either photography, photo editing, listing new products or dealing with deliveries. My husband gets home around 6pm, so I sign off to make dinner, relax and watch Netflix. Then I head back up to the office to work on the blog. I aim to be tucked into bed before midnight. Three days a week are spent working from home, sometimes more depending on what there is to do. This means I usually manage to get some household chores done in-between emails and editing. But to be honest, home stuff tends to get pushed to the weekends. I have the luxury of having my own office/craft room, so it’s not too hard to walk out in the evening and close the door. When growing up, I was lucky enough to benefit from my talented family who encouraged my creativity. When my mum asked if I wanted to join her in buying our local haberdashery shop, I jumped at the chance. Over the past 14 years our family-run business has aimed to supply customers with gorgeous things. I never imagined how much I would love what I do!
I love the freedom of being my own boss, and being able to develop our products. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. It is amazing to work with other independent businesses. Also, the flexibility of working when it’s comfortable for me is great. I am really productive in the afternoon and find it hard to be creative in the morning, so I work at the times when I can get the best out of myself. There is nothing I don’t like about being my own boss, though it can be hard making all the big decisions. I’m lucky to have a great support system. I do all of the photography for Sew Crafty, it is one of the most important things for me. It’s the first impression our customers have of us and our products. After years of being tied to a physical shop, I had a strong vision for the online version. The freedom we have now is wonderful. I run our blog, Live it. Love it. Make it, with my best friend Heather. It’s a collaborative effort, and we are both equally involved in every aspect.
As someone who has always made things, crafts and sewing never really go away. Styles and techniques, like fashion, come back around. However, with blogs and platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, we can show a wider audience that a creative lifestyle can be achieved with minimal effort. The resurgence of independent businesses offering on-trend materials and dressmaking patterns has been a massive boost! If you’re looking to turn your craft into a business, be prepared to turn your hand to anything! At the start, you will have to be deal with designing, making, photography, admin, finance, public relations and social media all at once. Futher down the road, you can outsource the parts you don’t like or are not so good at. But until then, embrace the jack of all trades mindset. Do your research, and most important of all – be yourself, stay authentic and be brave.

I
t's good to reminisce. I occasionally get lost for a while in my memories, especially at this time of year when the nights draw in and it's better to stay on the sofa with my dogs and a hot drink than to brave the British winter weather. One of my fondest memories from a Christmas past is of a meal I shared with my mum and grandparents. We decided to go around the table and tell one another what our favourite ever Christmas present had been. I was only 12, so mine was a toy called My Secret Diary, which at the time was a very advanced electronic way to store my most precious secrets! It was bright purple. My mum and my nan both said jewellery passed down from my great aunt Mary, an extremely cantankerous woman who lived in Glasgow. She would buy something in every colour it came in and then label it in her meticulous handwriting (when she died, it took us a week to clear out her studio flat because she owned so many things – all terrifyingly co-ordinated).
Christmas celebrations were very short and sweet in the 30s and 40s. The family worked together to make the Christmas pudding, silver coins were stirred into the mixture, and each member granted a wish when it was their turn to stir on Stir Sunday. queensofvintage.com
Top of the Pops
It was my pop's turn to tell us his favourite ever gift. He was a very serious Scot, and although he had a sense of humour, it was very much on his terms. He told us that the best present he ever got was a balaclava from his parents. After this announcement I looked at my mum and nan, and we all burst out laughing. He couldn't understand us, explaining over our chuckles that winters in Dumfries are very cold affairs, so the gift was both kind and practical – two words I most associate with my grandfather – but we just couldn't get past how funny he was, even though he hadn't intended to be.
Film fest
My pops passed away nearly two years ago, and although this will be my second Christmas without him, I still miss him very much and I will never tire of telling that story. The festive period can kick up all kinds of nostalgic memories for all of us. As we wind down for the holidays and prepare to celebrate with our friends and family, we remember the good times we've spent with our favourite people over the years. Christmas traditions are a fantastic way to preserve these memories, and you can repeat the old, or ring in some new ones of your very own. Creating your
very own nostalgia can be as simple as snuggling up to watch your favourite festive film with a treat, or gathering up the kids or your friends to make cards to send to everyone in your neighbourhood. As long as it means something to you, it matters! For me, it's about decorating my tree with trinkets that have been gifted to me, or that I have handmade or bought from somewhere special, like a German Christmas market or Liberty's. That way, each one tells me a story, and as I fill up the branches I can reminisce about the time that each came from and marvel at how far I've come.
Create lasting memories of nights snuggled up with your favourite movie and a mince pie (or four). Here's CB's top three festive films to watch over the holidays

Carol singing became an important part of Christmas from the 40s onwards, but especially in the late 50s and early 60s. Everyone would let the children sing before giving them a sixpence, a mince pie or a sausage roll. queensofvintage.com
In Germany, the first Christmas trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold-covered apples. Glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. whychristmas.com

Egg shells have been decorated for many centuries in different ways, and the egg shape has been used to create exquisite gifts by artists such as Fabergé and his contemporaries. They were often used to embellish Christmas trees or provide a festive centrepiece. Egg art appeals to people who have many crafts at their fingertips, such as papercrafts, beading, needlework skills and even sugarcraft. MY TREAT THIS M ONTH…
It isn’t for me , but I know I’ll bene fit - I’ve treated my h usband to the Chicken & Egg book by the Hai ry Bikers!
Something I’ve learned... Tattered Lace recently launched the Goldwork Lace Collection, a nod to an embroidery craft that is hundreds of years old. I am in awe of the amazing crafters who spend hours creating opulent stitched masterpieces. Unfortunately, I don’t have time for it at the moment, but it is definitely on my retirement list!

CRAFT OF THE MONTH
M
y next big thrill is updating our wreath, which I change each Christmas. Sometimes it's just about switching the colours, but this year I'm planning a bit of fusion. I'm going to dry orange slices in a cool oven, tie them to cinnamon sticks and wire them into the display, so it will look rustic and smell great. However, I'm also going to wind in some gorgeous gold-wired ribbon from Create and Craft, along with a massive bow to crown the top.
Hot Product A spanking new ink range is coming to town, and it's called Rare Earth. Luckily, I've been given some preview products to play with, and I have to say they're fabulous. I'm especially loving the metallics. Team with a clever stamping solution for an ink effect so dynamic it will shimmer. Coming soon to createandcraft.tv
FAVE THING!
I just love the Bright Heart Craft Lights. For a pretty centrepiece, just glitter some glass or plastic baubles, and pop in a vase with the lights. Magic!
Look what I made!
Every Christmas card can benefit from a touch of sparkle. This shaker greeting, which features the Festive Star die set, is dressed up with gilding flakes set against classic white. An elegant sentiment and some matting and layering is all it takes. Pop Bright Heart Lights behind the shaker for a twinkly finish.
