SCHOLARS’ DINNER
SIXTH FORM NEWS
This week within the Sixth Form we were delighted to welcome the 2023/24 Student Leadership Team.
On Monday all of the new leadership team members had individual hand over meetings with the previous students who worked within their area of responsibility last year. After having this important opportunity to get some advice and to ask any questions, the new team started to get stuck into their new roles! As the week has progressed all of our new student leaders have met with their link teachers to agree upon their projects for the year ahead and started to support the students throughout the school within their weekly duties in the Dining Room or Day Girls’ Study duty. Next week the team are meeting together to share their aims for their time in leadership and so we look forward to sharing some of their ideas with you over the coming weeks.
On behalf of all of the staff and students of St T's, I would like to take this opportunity to express a heartfelt thank you to all of the members of the 2022/23 student leadership team. They worked incredibly hard and have left a very valuable legacy for all of the students at St T's; we have all thoroughly enjoyed working with them over the last year.
Lastly, I am excited to share with you the news that our new Deputy Head Girl Julia will be taking over the responsibility of writing the Life In the Sixth Form section of the bulletin for you every week, beginning next Friday.
Thank you to Emma W who has diligently kept everyone up to date about Sixth Form Life for the last year. I am sure that you will agree with me that her wonderful writing style and dedication for Sixth Form life has provided us with highly enjoyable updates every week. Thank you to Emma for all of the time that she has dedicated to our section of the bulletin every week.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and a very warm congratulations to all of our new 2023/24 student leadership team, I am very much looking forward to working with them all.
- Miss Pitchford
SCHOLARS’ DINNER
On Thursday evening the Academic Scholars in Years 7, 8 and 9 were treated to their annual Scholars' Dinner. The dinner serves as an opportunity to celebrate the commitment of our community to the pursuit of academic excellence, and an enriching, sophisticated time was had by all (save the occasional slips of Mr. Melvin's table into a decidedly un-elevated conversation about recent Star Trek spin-offs).
The event began, as ever, with a traditional Latin grace read by Dr. McShane and Dr. Poffley. During the main course - Head Chef Gary's ever-popular Katsu Curry - the academic scholars were challenged to discuss a range of interesting and unusual topics, ranging from whether one can separate great art from a terrible artist to what one would say if given five minutes to justify humanity's existence to hostile aliens. These were delivered from table to table in Dr. McShane's now-legendary Jug of Conversation.
After the main course our star speaker - newly appointed Academic Prefect Corellia W - gave a heartfelt, quirky and erudite speech on why we should appreciate the moon. Apparently she was inspired to choose this topic by a recent dream, and we are glad she was. The girls sat riveted as she explained the motion of the tides, the reflection of light from the sun, and how we have immortalised the moon in art and poetry throughout human history. A well-deserved round of applause later and it was on to cake and ice-cream, with final words of encouragement from Dr. McShane.
INTERHOUSE MASTERMIND QUIZ
On Tuesday the houses had their Interhouse mastermind quiz. It was an extremely competitive and exciting event with both the Junior and Senior teams ending in a tie. This resulted in a playoff for the winners. The eventual winners were St Francis for the Junior section and St Benedict for the Senior section. Well done to all the participants and congratulations to the winning teams.
COMPETITION - WHO ISYOUR MODERN DAY MARY SEACOLE?
We have an exciting opportunity to enter the Young Seacole Trust's upcoming competition: 'Who is your modern-day Mary Seacole?' Entries can be a written story, a song or poem, a video or picture! there are plenty of options to unleash your creativity!
Please see the entry requirements and guidance booklet HERE to be considered. If you would like to enter, simply send your submission to: a.burgess@st-teresas.com
Deadline is the 5th March.
ART TRIP TO HORNIMAN MUSEUM
The girls had a lovely time on their visit to the Horniman Museum in London. They went to see the fantastic collections of natural history specimens, cultural artefacts, and musical instruments. The trip gave the pupils the chance to collect vital first-hand research which they will be able to use back in the classroom!
ART TRIP TO BRIGHTON
The pupils recently visited the Brighton Pavilion and Museum. The Royal Pavilion is one of the most extraordinary buildings in the country, given its Northern European location. The Museum next to the Pavilion houses a wide variety of fascinating artefacts, including paintings, ceramics, and furniture.
Afterwards they enjoyed lunch at a pizzeria before heading to the pier to take photos and observe the interesting structures.
INTERMEDIATE MATHEMATICS CHALLENGE
On the 1st of February 100 of our students in Years 9, 10 and 11 participated in the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge (IMC). They competed against thousands of students across the UK and the world.
The IMC encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. They are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience. The following students deserve a special mention: Sophie A, Lucie B, Emilie C, Veronica C, Isabel C, Katy H, Emily H-F, Hanna K, Lucy
Summer O, Pretoria R, Cara S and Amelia S-M who all received a bronze certificate.
The following students achieved a silver certificate: Jamie L, Alisa F, Kiara G, Julia L and Sophie S.
Congratulations to all our students who participated.

ECO REQUEST!!!!!
The green fingered students have started introducing indoor plants into the Form Rooms across the school in an Eco boosting initiative. In the spirit of the Eco Club the plants have either been re-homed or have been propagated, but we are still a few short so if you happen to have any that you would like to donate we would appreciate it.
In the same spirit of re-using we are also looking for any saucers or medium sized plant pots
Thank you from the Eco Council
ONE OCEAN
We have extra spaces available to attend the One Ocean workshops, you do not need to be an eco team member. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
If you have an interest in marine biology, conservation and microplastics this may be worthwhile; you can also add this to your UCAS application.
There will be a trip in the Summer Term to Brighton, so if you sign up and attend the talks you will automatically receive an invite.
There will be a further two workshops on the 2nd and 9th of March at 13:30 in Room 35.

This Week
This week we marked the beginning of the Church’s season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Services. The forty days of Lent remind us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his final journey to Jerusalem where he would face his condemnation and arrest.
During this season we are called to engage in the three great practices of Lent - to pray, to fast, and to give to others.
Prayer is perhaps both the easiest and the hardest. You can pray at any time, in any place, using whatever words are most natural to you. Yet it also requires both discipline and, perhaps most importantly, honesty. God, our loving father, knows us better than we know ourselves, so prayer isn’t intended to change God. Instead, by spending time in the presence of God, sharing our hopes and desires with Him, we find our will being shaped by God’s loving plan for us.
Fasting, or ‘giving things up’ is often where people start their Lenten observance. Many of us start with those familiar themes of giving up treats like chocolate, sweets and cake. This isn’t a bad place to start, but don’t stop there. The main idea is that we fast from those things that keep us away from God. So consider fasting from selfishness, self-centredness and pride. Pope Francis gives us some great ideas on the next page.
Finally, we are called to reach out to others and give generously. Certainly it is a time to consider what it is that you do for charities. Perhaps consider doing more than you would usually go. But again, that is the starting point. Our aim is to recognise that all the gifts, talents and opportunities that we are given are intended to help us serve others.
We wish everyone a happy and holy Lent!
On this first anniversary of the tragic war in Ukraine we join with all people of goodwill and pray for peace

We had a lovely half term and a very quiet start to the second half of the term.
The staff focused on getting the horses ridden and exercised before we are back to lessons from next Monday!
Over the half term there was NSEA training with Georgie and they had competitions which they did really well in! There were fun Pony Days arranged which the ponies and riders really enjoyed! They run every holiday so if you want to book one you can go onto the STE website. This week was really quiet as there were no lessons and the team focused on exercising the ponies, though there will be lessons and volunteering again as normal next week. The horse of the week is… Roxy!
~ Libby C
The NSEA riders have had a busy half term.
Some riders were out competing at the NSEA County Challenge dressage at Parwood as well as the Pony Club Spring Championships held at Arena UK.
At Parwood, Lilly S and Teddy were crowned County Challenge Prelim Champions as the only combination to achieve over 70%. Rosie C and Briggs were very close behind in 3rd with over 69%. Rosie also did a great test with Majyk for 7th.
At Arena UK for the Pony Club Spring Championships, Lulu S had a very successful show finishing 3rd in the Novice warm up class with +69% and then winning her arena in the Intermediate Championship with another +69% score. Well worth the long trip up to Grantham!
We then enjoyed a great afternoon of show jumping training here at STE on Thursday and over the weekend we had several riders out competing.
Lilly S was at Felbridge NSEA showjumping, jumping double clear in the 80cm and the 90cm for 9th and 12th in large classes.
Rosie C went to Pyecombe and won the 60cm and finished 3rd in the 70cm.
Congratulations to Saskia T-V who went to her first competition and finished 6th in the 80cm at Parwood.
Well done all and we are looking forward to another successful half term of competitions!
