Message from the Headmaster

A warm welcome back to everyone after the half-term break. It proved to be a busy period on-site with the new Science and Technology Centre rapidly taking shape. Our older pupils have already had a visit to the impressive building, and details will be shared about the opportunity for parents to tour the Centre towards the end of this term.

On Tuesday, all our pupils and staff were treated to delicious pancakes at lunchtime before the start of Lent. The following day, our school community came together to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass with Fr. Stephen. Thank you to the parents who joined us and I know they were particularly impressed with the powerful collective singing voice of our pupils.

I would like to congratulate the pupils from Cranmore who competed in the English Ski Championships in Bormio last week. All the boys skied very well with three finishing in the top 20 in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events .We are exceptionally proud of their performance and efforts. The Prep school hockey season began this week with a number of fixtures across many year groups. There was also time during a busy week for pupils to get involved in racquet sports and the pre-season cricket nets in the sports hall.

On Thursday, our Reception children enjoyed a visit to Painshill Park where they took part in a fairy tale Story Walk as part of their Happily Ever After topic learning this half term. They then had an opportunity to explore the Painshill Forest School.

Internet Safety Week

The Lower Prep celebrated Safer Internet Day with a variety of different activities and discussions. The theme this year is: Want to talk about it? Children and adults are asked to make space for conversations about life online. One of the activities, completed this week, was linked to a story called ‘Hanni and the Magic Window’. The story is about a girl called Hanni who has a magic window at home. When she sees something that upsets her, she struggles to explain what has happened. The story explores who she might talk to so that she can solve her problem. The Lower Prep created their own magic windows to express what they enjoy, understand and have discussed about technology and the Internet.

Come and See Afternoon for Years 2 and 3

On Friday 10th February, we were delighted to welcome Years 2 & 3 families into the classrooms to share their children’s beautiful work. The children took great pride in sharing their books and artwork displayed around the classrooms. Thank you so much for joining us for this special event.

Marbling in Year 5 Art Lessons

Year 5 pupils have been learning the art of marbling, making connections to their science lessons in the behaviour of oil and water, with joyful and unexpected results!

Nursery News

The children really enjoyed their Shrove Tuesday experience in the Nursery. They sampled pancakes with a choice of toppings for breakfast and then had fun tossing a pancake! The Pre-Nursery children had fun getting messy, mixing together flour, water and lemons for their Pancake Gloop. At Forest School the Nursery children also enjoyed making pancakes and cooking them over the fire with Ellie.

Year 2 Work on Christopher Columbus

This week, Year 2 started their new unit of significant people by learning about Christopher Columbus. Students acted out a short play about Columbus’s initial voyage to the Empire of the Indies when he ended up in the Caribbean Islands. In small groups, students acted out what happened when Columbus and his crew landed in the Caribbean. In art lessons, students used craft materials to make one of the ships that travelled in Columbus's fleet.

Sports Update

Thought for the week:

How will you mark Lent?

A Prayer for Lent

Almighty and ever living God, you invite us deeper into your world, your people, your Lent. May this time be one of outward focus; seeking you in those we often ignore. Help us live a Lent focused on freedom, generosity and encounter. Give us hearts hungry to serve you and those who need what we have to give.

Amen

REFLECTION

Why 40 days? The number 40 is significant in Scripture. In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the Earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain. The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God. Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. What will you do over the next 40 days?

Let us Pray: Our Father

Hail Mary

1 minute silence

To experience Lent with love means caring for those who suffer or feel abandoned and fearful.”

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
