growth, root structure, and top playing conditions, the maintenance staff aggressively applies horticultural practices necessary for maintaining healthy and mature year-round growth. In addition to aerification which we’ve discussed in past newsletters, verticutting and topdressing are practices that are completed during the summer months.

Verticutting Vertical mowing is a maintenance practice periodically performed to accomplish the following objectives: • Remove excessive leaf growth that contributes to puffy, spongy surface conditions. • Improve mowing quality and surface smoothness. • Cut laterally growing stolons and promote an upright growth habit. • Open grooves in the turf canopy for the incorporation of sand topdressing.

2

CORAL RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB

The process involves using a putting green mower fitted with thin, tightly spaced blades that cut vertically into the turf. The depth of the blades is typically adjusted 1/16 inch to 1/8 inch below the effective cutting height so that the blades penetrate the turf canopy. The goal is to thin the turf canopy while maintaining a proper balance of leaf growth and turf density. There is no standard recommendation for the frequency of vertical mowing. It is a judgment call made by the superintendent based on the condition and growth rate of the grass. Poa annua greens tend to grow more rapidly during the spring and fall, while bermudagrass is more aggressive in the summer. During these times, vertical mowing is often performed every one to two weeks. Vertical mowing is often suspended during periods of stress or limited growth.

C O U R S E U P D AT E S

An Extraordinary Day, for an Extraordinary Golfer I T WA S N O T T H E I R N O R M A L

Thursday 9:14 am tee time.“Sis” Ertley, Mary Grace Bauer and Edith O’Rourke were “Playing with the Pro,” Taylor Collins. And when Taylor teed off and drove 287 yards landing in the greenside bunker, then made her putt for a birdie, something happened to Edith O’Rourke—competition! At age 91, and sometimes shooting in the low- to mid-90s, Edith ended the day shooting an 88. “When you are motivated to play with your friends and with someone as good as Taylor, you rise to the occasion,” Edith commented later. Edith Margaret O’Rourke was born in Edith O'Rourke 1926 and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana to athletic and influential parents who belonged to the Fort Wayne Country Club. Her mother was very social and instrumental in bringing young Edith along to many sports tournaments. Edith credits her parents for numerous opportunities and blessings received. It was their dedication to integrity and sportsmanship

that were foundational to her values and strength of character. After graduating with a Masters from Notre Dame and serving as a sister of the Holy Cross, Edith relocated to Fort Lauderdale in 1970 and taught elementary school. She learned how to play golf on the old American Golfers Club, now the site of the Rees 9 and The Enclave. However, she has no regrets in its passing. “It is just so beautiful to see what is there now, there is just no comparison,” she says. Edith plays golf regularly at Coral Ridge year-round whether or not she has a partner, although she welcomes the opportunity to share her love of the sport with others. “When I play CRCC I have a strategy. I play down the middle, stay out of the bunkers and then play the angles.” Being a true advocate of the sport, Edith also thinks it is very important for players to know golf etiquette, the rules of golf and cart management. Whether it was basketball, tennis or table tennis, Edith has always considered herself a natural athlete. And as is evidenced by the many tournaments played over the years at CRCC, she is also “very competitive,” something her friends would agree upon!

GOLF ETIQUETTE LOOKING AHEAD

It’s All About Respect Etiquette is an integral part of golf, defining the game’s core values. It’s the manner in which the game is played that ensures maximum enjoyment for all players. In short, it’s about “respect.” Respect for the course. Leave the course as

you would like to find it by repairing pitchmarks, replacing divots and raking bunkers. Respect for your fellow players. Be sportsmanlike and polite, stay by the green to watch them hole out, and avoid distracting them. Respect for the game. Know the rules and etiquette of golf !

C LU B EV E N T R E S E RVAT I O N P O L I C Y Special club events, wine dinners, Saturday night seafood buffets and holiday dining are popular events that sell out and require the purchase of special food and beverage products, equipment, entertainment, etc. Last minute un-replaced cancellations (including changes to the party number) are unfair to those Members who are turned away due to full capacity and cause the Club to incur unnecessary expenses if the reservation is not replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise a firm enforcement of the special event and holiday dining policy. • At the time of making your reservation we will charge your account 100% of the event price. • Please let us know if you have other Members dining with you, so we may contact them. • You may cancel 7 days prior to event, without being charged. • If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the event, you will have to pay 100% of the event price. Note: Should there be a wait list and we are able to fill your reservation less than 6 days prior to the event, your account will be credited in full.
