of us look forward to the holidays. Between the gifts and celebrations to the fresh excitement of a new year, it is easy to understand why this is considered the “best time of the year!” While the holidays can bring some stress, it is difficult not to be thankful when so many are focused on giving to others and creating special memories. Our calendar is chock full of events to help you celebrate those moments from meeting friends at our Grand Wine Tasting, to relishing childish wonder at our Winter Wonderland and spending time with family and friends at our Christmas Eve Surf & Turf and Havana Nights New Year’s Eve Party. Plus, we have added two special brunches on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The New Year brings excitement, but with it, a heartfelt thankfulness for the past year. Here at the Club, we are thankful for

our Members, some of whom have been dedicated to this community for over 50 years, and who breathe joy and companionship into the Club every day! We are also blessed to have a loyal staff that never tires of serving graciously and going the extra mile to put a smile on our Member’s faces. On page 14 you can read about our “Ambassador of Tennis” and count the years of service we consider major milestones. Although this year brought it’s challenges, please join us in being grateful and ushering in a joyful holiday season!

Time To Get on the Courts! L AS T YEAR IT WAS

about facility improvements, this year it is about new programs and expanded opportunities for play. We have extended our weekday hours to stay open until 9 pm and have added some new “drop in” evening activities. Thursday night come out for “mixed-up” doubles where teams can consist of any combination of men and women on the court. Players can sign up without a partner. Friday night join our mixed doubles where players sign up as a team composed of a man and a woman. Stop by on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings for Cardio Tennis and a great heart pumping workout. Players with a group of 6 players can request a “live ball” session, just contact us with a time and we will supply the professional. As in the past, we offer clinics and private lessons seven days a week all year - except for Christmas! So give us a call or stop by the Tennis Shop and let us help you get you on the courts to start enjoying this great sport.

Will Hoag Celebrates 45 Years!

ANYONE WHO KNOWS TENNIS

in Fort Lauderdale, knows the name Will Hoag. Managing Partner, JJ Sehlke says,“A big part of the success of the Coral Ridge tennis program is due to Will Hoag’s passion and dedication. He is a true ambassador for tennis.” Will hails from the small town of Finleyville, PA, a town that did not, and to this day still does not, have a public tennis court. And no one in Will’s family played tennis. However, something happened one day while watching the Alleghany County Championship tennis tournament as a senior in high school. He left for college the next year and fortunately one of his roommates was a tennis player and helped him learn the game. “I started playing as many local tournaments as time would allow,” Will remembers. “But it was that one tennis tournament that got me interested in the sport. I went back four years later and won the Alleghany County Championship. That was the ‘springboard’ I needed.” After graduating from California University of PA in 1971, Will came to Fort Lauderdale with “two tennis rackets and $200 in cash.” He took a job at the Tennis Club of Fort Lauderdale that year and a year later become the assistant professional under Glenn Chancellor at Coral Ridge Country

Club. Glenn left his position in October of 1972 and as they say, Will “was in the right place at the right time.” He married his wife Mary Ann one year later and started a family having two children, Mark and Kara. Through the years, Will has taught, coached and competed with three generations of Members. “We have the best Members in the world. They are a very caring group that make you feel like you are part of their family. I consider myself very lucky to have been able to work with this Membership over the years.” Professionally, Will has served on the board and as the president of the Florida Division of the USPTA. He served on the national board of the USPTA and held the office of president from 1997 to 1999. He also served and chaired numerous national USPTA and USTA committees. Will was honored as the Florida Division Professional of the Year in 1985, 1987 and 1990. “Of all the golf and tennis professional I have ever met,” JJ adds,“Will has contributed more to the success of his sport.” In 2002 the USPTA honored Will by presenting him with the Alex Gordon USPTA Professional of the Year award and in 2006 he was inducted into the Florida Division USPTA Hall of Fame. When asked if he ever thought about another career, he replied, “I cannot imagine myself being in any other profession. I love my job and I have no regrets.” Being the advocate he is for the sport of tennis, he added,“I would one day like to help find a way to add a park with some tennis courts in my hometown. Tennis has been good to me and this would be a way for me to give back to my great sport.” Congratulations Will! We honor your dedication and hard work and thank you for your commitment to the sport of tennis at CRCC.

C LU B EV E N T R E S E RVAT I O N P O L I C Y Special club events, wine dinners, seafood buffets and holiday dining are popular events that sell out and require the purchase of special food and beverage products, equipment, entertainment, etc. Last minute un-replaced cancellations (including changes to the party number) are unfair to those Members who are turned away due to full capacity and cause the Club to incur unnecessary expenses if the reservation is not replaced. As a result, the Club must exercise a firm enforcement of the special event and holiday dining policy. • At the time of making your reservation we will charge your account 100% of the event price. Please let us know if you have other Members dining with you. • You may cancel 7 days prior to event, without being charged. • If you cancel less than 7 days prior to the event, you will have to pay 100% of the event price. Note: Should there be a wait list and we are able to fill your reservation less than 6 days prior to the event, your account will be credited in full.
