to see Members excited to be back on the course! As difficult as this year has been, we are happy to be the respite, the “oasis” for those who choose to venture out. Until numbers of infections diminish, outdoor activities and the fresh air of golf, tennis and swimming are great antidotes for stress relief and internal peace. Sports alone is no protection from Covid, but it goes a long way in keeping spirits up and immune systems strong. Golfers and tennis players argue about

T E N N I S

For the Love of the Game Tennis is Moving Forward While Adhering to CDC Guidelines T H E S E P A S T M O N T H S have been

a challenge, but tennis is going strong here at Coral Ridge and across the country. We have learned how to maintain play while staying safe. We did, however, have to make a few changes such as requiring Members to call ahead to reserve a court, limiting the number of people in the Tennis Shop, and adding additional seating on the courts to help with social distancing during change overs. We also ask our Members to please help us by always wearing a mask when entering the Tennis Shop and to not gather on the deck.

Court Conditions How Did the Courts Fare with all the Rain? We had an estimated 29 inches of rain during the months of October and November. Even though rain is good for clay courts, this amount of rain causes problems with loss of court material and “high lines.” We always add court material on a monthly basis, and we

8

CORAL RIDGE COUNTRY CLUB

roll every line two ways on every court every week. Our service to Members and great court conditions are our two top priorities. Many ask, “How exactly do clay courts dry?” The answer is 70% of the water drains to the low side and off the court, 25% is absorbed through the court surface, and 5% evaporates. Wind and sun help with this process and that is why the courts take longer to dry at certain times of the day. Windscreens: Do They Really Block the Wind? Actually, the answer is no! Although they block some of the wind, their main purpose is for vision. Windscreens provide a backdrop so players can better see the ball coming from the other end of the court. During the hurricane season with an approaching storm, the screens need to be rolled up to protect the fences from being toppled and the screens being ripped. With 11 courts, it takes our staff approximately eight hours to prepare the facility. Therefore, we need to close the courts a few days before a storm and it takes a day or two to re-open once the storm passes.

Monday - Friday: 8 am - 9 pm Saturday & Sunday: 8 am - 6 pm Please call the Tennis Shop if playing after 6 pm on weekdays. On nights with no play the courts will close at 8 pm. Tennis Shop: 954.449.4410

Fort Lauderdale Challenge is on! This year the Fort Lauderdale Challenge will take place on Saturday January 30th at the Lauderdale Yacht Club. Play will begin at 8 am with the junior matches and end around noon with the Pro Exhibition. Our goal is to bring the cup back to Coral Ridge!

Dennis Quaye Originally from Ghana, Dennis came to the US at age 15 and received a full scholarship to play collegiate tennis. He has had jobs in security and business, but tennis has always remained his greatest passion. He is impressed with our H.O.M.E. motto and is eager to serve Members by creating memorable experiences! Dennis is a member of the USPTA and was the 2019 District Tennis Pro of the Year in Boca.

T H E C O R R E C T M E D I C A L term for

the common tennis elbow is “tendonitis in the elbow area.” Basically, the tendon becomes inflamed either from overuse, an incorrect stroke, equipment, or sometimes something not even related to tennis. When related to tennis, generally the problem is a decelerated stroke that stops abruptly. Like when driving your car and you “slam” on the brakes each time you stop. We see it occur mostly at the club level from one-handed backhands and serves. In both cases, the player is trying not to miss and thereby stops the forward motion over and over causing the tendon to become inflamed. Tennis elbow generally comes on slowly and goes away in the

same fashion, slowly. The best way to prevent it is to make sure that you are not holding the racket too tightly and concentrate on completing the stroke. Remember, when striking the ball properly, the racket goes faster after contact than before contact. When equipment is the problem it can be the wrong type of strings, a racket strung too tight, or too stiff of a racket. Once you do get “tennis elbow” you need to rest, apply ice daily, and take a prescribed amount of ibuprofen. Be patient, it will go away with time and care. (Of course, if the pain is so severe that you cannot lift your arm to have your coffee, please consult your physician!)

Serving Problems: Look at the Toss M O S T O F T H E T I M E when a player

has problems with their serve it is generally the toss. Tossing the ball is the only unnatural thing that we do in tennis. This is because we are first doing this with our nonpreferred hand and when our hand gets above our shoulder, our elbow and wrist want to bend thereby causing the ball to go behind the preferred release point.

The Fix: Isolate the toss by practicing tossing the ball and catching it without moving your hand. To do this, the palm of your hand has to finish pointing up. You should never see the palm of your toss hand after the ball leaves your hand. How should this feel? You want to feel like a waiter carrying a tray of glassware above their head through a crowded dining room.

New Beginnings and New Expectations We all share in the excitement for our newly restored Championship 18 by Rees Jones and the enjoyment it will bring to us daily. AS WE ALL GET TO KNOW this course

and explore our new strategies to hopefully conquer Mr. Jones new masterpiece, we would like to take you on a journey and paint a picture on how best to navigate your way. As carts leave the tee box and move forward to the fairway (hopefully you are there!), directional signs will show where carts can enter the fairway and proceed. Why is this important? Part of the restoration process included a new drainage system. For water to move properly, Mr. Jones incorporated high and low areas of turf to get the water moving. When carts transition from cart path to fairway, its best to enter a high area (dry) instead of a low area (wet) as this will assist in keeping turf conditions nice and up to expectations. See pictures on right of high area to enter fairway and low area to avoid.

fairway and approaching the green. #1, continue to stay in the high areas and avoid the low areas where the drains are located. Remember, high areas = dry and low areas = wet. Carts in wet conditions equal poor turf conditions and that leads to cart path only restrictions, nobody wants that! As carts arrive closer to the green, players will be greeted with directional signs to exit the fairway and, you guessed it, at the high area (see picture below).

Golf Shop: 954.449.4420 And for our walkers. Green complexes have shaved areas indicating where golf bags/pull carts should be placed/parked. Several of the new greens have significant elevation changes and a wrongly placed pull cart could equal your clubs rolling away, so

park near the green, look for the BLUE stake (see picture below) as this indicates where the cart should be parked. These stakes have been strategically placed for two reasons; easy access point for the golfer to walk on/off the green; and to assist with pace of play.

Monday - Sunday until further notice Champ 18 starts at 7 am Rees 9 starts at 10 am

please be aware of shaved areas around green complexes that lead to the next tee box.

Care of Course Reminders

We’ve initiated several operational changes to ensure that Members have more access to play, that we maintain the quality of the course long-term, and that events hosted are set to the highest of Coral Ridge standards. Below are a few of these highlights: • Monthly MGA Events move to Wednesday (previously on Saturday) • New Ladies Low & Handicap Groups • New Men’s Low & High Handicap Groups • Fewer events are being held to allow all Members course access for as much play time as possible. Events will begin January. • Reduced fee “guest days” will no longer be offered.

• Fill divots with sand, then smooth. • Repair all ball marks on the green, plus one more. • Restore bunkers back to their original condition by smoothing irregularities with your feet. • Remove sand from your shoes prior to walking on the green. • Take full relief from all sodded areas. Do not play from them.

Pace of Play Assistance CRCC Staff will be on the course throughout the day monitoring play. If you are approached by them, please assist us with your pace to move back into position. Thank you!

Appropriate Golf Attire • Collared, or banded golf shirts, both short and long sleeve. • Ladies tops may be sleeveless, as long as no undergarments are exposed. • Men’s shirts must be tucked in. • Golf pants, capris, knickers, shorts, or skirts as sold in the golf shop. • Golf shoes (spikeless or smooth bottoms). • Golf hats (bills facing forward), sun hats, or visors.

Therefore, we will want to aim to the left, to allow for a left to right curvature of the golf ball. Wider Stance With this type of lie, at address we will be further from the ball, therefore we need to get a bit closer. To do this we can widen our stance which will also add stability.

More Leg Flex Most important! More flex in our legs. We do not want to jump at the ball nor try to create a bunch of power, our main goal is a solid strike on the golf ball, which will be best achieved by maintaining the flex in our legs through the ball.

THE BIARRITZ

Putting on the Ritz, the Biarritz!

A Biarritz, or Biarritz green, is a putting green that features a deep gully, or swale, bisecting its middle. The gully, which is manicured the same as the rest of the green, usually runs from side-to-side. This creates a front portion and a back portion as well as a center portion in the swale.

Rees Jones explains, “Every green surface at Coral Ridge is distinctly different in shape, angle and contour. The 18th hole is one of the longest par fours on the course, so the entrance is open but the green surrounds have their pitfalls with the water on the left, bunkers left and right, as well as a closely mowed chipping area. The Biarritz green surface requires skill and accuracy on the approach shot to achieve a golfer’s final goal. This deep green requires strategy and execution to successfully complete a round of golf at Coral Ridge. A finishing hole of a highly regarded golf

course should be dramatic and challenging. For the long hitters the landing area is made gradually narrow by the bracketing fairway bunkers which causes golfers to carefully manage their tee shots. A shorter approach shot to the Biarritz green makes it easier to access the section of the green where the hole is located. This is important since long breaking putts on this deep green will make it difficult to avoid a three putting situation. The water on the left of the green should come into play often since the approach shot is one of the longest on the golf course. Shorter hitters should favor the right side. If the green is missed, recovery shots will be challenging since the green is designed with three distinct sections. The 18th hole has every element of a strategic and challenging climax to a round of golf at Coral Ridge. It is a great example of the Robert Trent Jones mantra that a great golf hole should be ‘a hard par, easy bogey. ’ ”

A Little History… In 1888, Willie Dunn Jr. designed the original and most famous namesake ‘biarritz’ at the Biarritz Golf Club located on the northern coast of France nicknamed “the Chasm.” The chasm was adopted by C.B. Macdonald as a template hole and named “the biarritz.” Fellow architects were slow to grow fond of the bold and controversial putting surface, but giants of classic golf course architecture (from the first half of the 20th century) such as MacDonald and Seth Raynor often utilized the biarritz on one hole of their golf courses. While both limited the biarritz green to par-3s, modern architects have begun to use it on par-4s and 5s, making the swale large enough to accommodate a pin position in the middle. Being a Yale man, Rees Jones was all too familiar with a biarritz, as The Course at Yale — and its signature 9th hole — is often considered Raynor’s crowning achievement.

In the final restoration plans for the course, Rees Jones had something special in mind for golfers, “the 18th is a strong finishing hole, and a great golf course needs a great finishing hole,” Hence, #18 was designed as a “Biarritz” hole.

The ‘Chasm’ hole was played from an 80-foot-high cliff over the Bay of Biscay to a 50-foot cliff beyond. The water carry was nearly 170 yards!

The 9th hole on the first day that the Course at Yale was open in 1925
