Race For Life in memory o Charlotte Lister, Miss Diamond UK, and Taylor Robshaw, Miss South Yorkshire Galaxy, joined together at this year’s Race For Life at Town Moor in Doncaster which raised £55,000 Charlotte Lister, 34, from Doncaster, ran in memory of her grandparents who died of cancer. Charlotte isn’t a stranger to running Race for Life as it’s her third time completing the fun run in which she has helped raised hundreds of pounds for Cancer Research. Taylor Robshaw, 20, from Rotherham ran in memory of her mum’s cousin who sadly passed away from breast cancer. Charlotte and Taylor were joined by thousands of fundraisers across South Yorkshire in a special day of action to beat cancer. Taylor says: “It was a great day to get together and help raise vital funds to help best cancer and run in memory of my mum’s cousin.” Doncaster Echo had a chat with Charlotte to find out more about the event and what motivated her to take part. What inspired you to take part in the run? Due to losing four grandparents to cancer and two family members in remission, I always try to help fundraise for Cancer Research UK and the Race for Life is an amazing event. Everyone gets together

Page 6

in memory of someone to not only raise money but remember them in a fun way as you run, jog or walk. I also love the fact you can get dressed up. This was my third Race for Life and I can’t wait for next year’s already. How did you prepare for the event? I didn’t really prepare but I do a 3k walk nearly every day and a 30-minute Zumba class up to five times a week. What was the biggest challenge? The Race For Life was an easy challenge for me as I just walk the 5k but my biggest running challenge I have ever done was the Sheffield Half Marathon. That was incredibly difficult and took me about a week to recover. Do you have any future plans to raise money? At the moment I’m raising money for Coppafeel and the Samaritans through my online pageant magazine which has raised over £2,200 so far. I’m planning on running the Santa Dash at Sandal Park in December in aid of charity but normally I just come across charity events on social media and think ‘I could do that’. I would love to do a fire walk in the future and that’s on my bucket list.

FROM A POLICE Be the future of South Yorkshire Police

You can earn as you learn, and complete the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Over three years you’ll combine on-the-job learning and academic theory to become a police constable with a degree in Professional Policing Practice

Page 10

Issue 021 - August/September 2022

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, the Doncaster Policing Team talks to us about how you can join the force and make a real difference to your community A career with South Yorkshire Police is the chance for you to take on a challenge that will change lives. Whether you’re a school leaver, a graduate or searching for new opportunities, we welcome applications from all backgrounds and communities. There are three different entry routes as part of our Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF), which you can take to join the police. If you don’t have a degree: You can earn as you learn, and complete the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Over three years you’ll combine on-the-job learning and academic theory to become a police constable with a degree in Professional Policing Practice. If you already have a degree: The Degree Holder Entry Programme (DHEP) combines a work-based programmed and off-thejob learning as you spend two years being a police officer and probationer. After completion, you’ll achieve a graduate diploma in Professional Policing Practice. South Yorkshire Police offers two DHEP courses - one for those who want to be a Police Constable and one for those who want to be a Detective. We hold regular virtual recruitment events, where you can find out more about the role, speak to

officers already doing the job and learn about the academic theory involved. Applications are open until 31 August 2022 for our DHEP. If you want to study first: You can undertake a three-year degree in Professional Policing at your own expense and then apply to become a police officer. During your course, there may be an option for you to join as a special constable. Be the future of going for it Whether you’re a young school-leaver, a retailer or ex-military, we know that you will have plenty of transferable skills which you can bring to a career with the police. Things like following process, social and emotional intelligence, conversation skills and the ability to diffuse a situation are all skills we search for in our candidates. If you have the relevant experience and strengths, all you have to do is apply. We are an organisation that welcome, support and value those from underrepresented communities. From difference comes invaluable life experiences, ideas and ways of thinking – and by encouraging individuality we are working towards serving our communities and understanding our public better.

Miss Doncaster nominated national diversity award Reigning Miss Doncaster GB, Emma Garbutt, has been nominated for a coveted national diversity award for being a positive role model after campaigning for better support for young people with cancer family, it made me want to be able to make a change. Our aim is to make the lives of young people with cancer and young people affected by cancer easier and more independent. Luke was the kindest person I’d ever met, I wanted his legacy to live on through the work I do and so I decided to call the project The Kindness Drive.

Emma, a country music artist and charity fundraiser, started her project ‘The Kindness Drive’ in February 2021 after losing her best friend to a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Our Goole had a chat with Emma to find out more about herself and the award. How does it feel to be nominated? It feels incredible honestly. I put so much work into what I do with The Kindness Drive

Page 12

because I’m so passionate about making a difference to the lives of the people who need it the most. To be recognised for the work on such a huge scale makes everything worth it. How did the idea of ‘The Kindness Drive’ come about? I started The Kindness Drive in February 2021 after losing my best friend to a rare form of bone cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Whilst Luke was unwell it made me quite angry to see the lack of support available for himself and his

What is your proudest achievement? There have been so many proud moments! Of course, being nominated for a National Diversity Award is up there. Last year I was nominated for a ‘Pageant Industry Award’ for my charity work which was incredible too. I would however say I get the most pride from seeing my hard work make a difference, to receive messages of thanks is a feeling I can’t really describe. What has been the most challenging moment? To be honest there have been a lot of challenging moments.

Issue 021 - August/September 2022

for a

I’d say the most challenging thing is funding. I have been very lucky to receive some incredible items donated for our collections by the public, this makes such a huge difference. I do struggle with running costs as I fund everything myself. What are your plans for the future? I’m currently working on completely rebranding The Kindness Drive. We are still collecting our home comfort items for donation as usual. I am working on building an online place where people can go after their diagnosis and find support in many different ways. I’m working on arranging some

online and in-person support events for both young people with cancer and young people affected by cancer. What do you enjoy most about entering beauty pageants? Honestly the best bit is having a platform to talk about The Kindness Drive. We get so many opportunities to spread really important messages. We also get to work with some incredible charities. I also love meeting the other girls! I’m in such a lucky position where I now have a friend or two in nearly every city in the UK, it makes

travelling super fun. Emma is now hoping for success at the Miss Great Britain final held in October in Leicester after placing in the top 12 last year and winning the talent round. The 77-year-old title is currently held by Eden McAllister, with two other age categories, Miss Great Britain and Miss Great Britain Classic having been added in recent years. You can support Emma by following her on social media - @emmajademusic. The Miss Great Britain grand final will take place on 21st October. www.missgreatbritain.co.uk

The football league was established in 1968 and has been growing in popularity since then, arranging fixtures and leagues for over 5,500 local children. DDJSFL are a mixed league with children from U7s to U18s benefitting from the weekly exercise of participating in football. Currently, girls who play football in Doncaster are either in a mixed team or are travelling into a different county to play fixtures. This involves a vast amount of travelling for them and has

resulted in some leaving their teams. Doncaster Girl’s League which launches in September will enable more children to get active, meet new friends and boost their confidence whilst engaging in football within the town. Teams can be registered now. If you are interested and would like any additional information, contact Russ Higham (League Office) at leaguesecretaryddjsfl@gmail.com.

Along with the PT sessions, boxing style 1-1 sessions, kids youth and conditioning sessions, it really is an Fitness Events centre all under the B90fitness umbrella. Michael Fraser, owner and fitness instructor, told Doncaster Echo: “I didn’t want to simply run a traditional fitness class, I wanted to create a type of experience that was closer to being part of a show. It’s a very different experience to a traditional gym.” Michael’s fitness philosophy is all about encouraging people to enjoy the time they spend exercising, enjoying the journey towards achieving their goals. The end goal is ultimately helping people to improve their quality of life, it’s not just about fitness, it’s about being part of a community.
