INTRODUCTION
Hello and welcome to February’s edition of Our Goole!
Well January is now over, and for many, it can be a hard month. But February is now here, the month of love, and those lighter nights are just around the corner.
We have plenty of offers from local businesses in our area as well as a selection of feel-good stories from the community.
This month we talk to Families In Goole, a local parent group based at Junction, Goole, who put on a variety of activities and events in the area.
We have also put together a good guide to help our readers with the cost of living, sharing some top tips from our local council and quick fixes we can do to save energy.
Our front page image was taken by Sarah Davey.
As always, if you would like your business to be featured in the magazine or have a story, please get in touch with a member of our fantastic team who will be happy to help.

16 HELP FOR HOUSEHOLDS
As the cost-of-living crisis is still at the forefront of everyone’s minds, Our Goole wants our readers to know there is help out there and has put together some easy tips that you may benefit from.

Families
If you are looking to meet people or get involved in some local projects, this group could be perfect.
Our Goole had a chat to Joanne Ellis, who runs the group, to find out more about the group and what parents can expect if they join.
Joanne said: “We are located at Junction Goole in the upstairs community room every Friday from 9:30am - 11:30am and all are welcome. People can drop in for five minutes’ peace or stay for the whole two hours. You can bring your children or come alone and enjoy five minutes peace! People can enjoy a free cuppa, and a biscuit and a chat. We also offer internet access and have tablets available at our weekly group for use by parents or children. Children
friendships
can use them to help with their homework and parents can access the internet, emails, search for jobs, etc. These tablets were donated to us by HEYSmile and have been a huge bonus to our group.
“Digital inclusion is an important issue and we’re so happy to be able to help with this. As well as our drop-in group, we have organised various activities and trips. We had days out to Bridlington during the school summer holidays with the help of Goole Go-Far. At Easter and Halloween we ran colouring competitions with prizes that were donated by Morrisons. We also had a visit from Sam’s Safari where the children met various animals and a visit from Goole Fire Brigade which were all very much enjoyed by

families. We plan to do more of the same in the future!
“We ran a well-attended Winter Fayre on November 5th, where there were local craft stalls and children could make reindeer food or write a letter to Santa. The elves were hard at work behind the scenes and the children who wrote a letter to Santa received a personalised reply.
“As a lovely end to the year, we held our second children’s Christmas party. Due to the success of the first Christmas party we held two this time. There were party games, dancing and a visit from Santa with a present for the children. The present was very kindly given by Howden Rotary and Home Start Goole.
“Families in Goole was started in September 2021, and is run by Kerry Kirkpatrick, Joanne Ellis, and Coleen Connett as well as some much appreciated helpers.
“Demand has grown to the point that we are
planning a second group which will run in the evening. This will allow people who are perhaps working during the day to still attend. We are so proud of what we have done and it just goes to show what three mums sitting around a kitchen table can achieve! We were nominated this year for the Mayor’s Citizen of Goole awards and were humbled to be included in a category with so many people dedicated to improving the local community.”
Keep your eyes on the group’s Facebook page for updates. You can find it at www.facebook.com/Familiesingoole or email familiesingoole@gmail.com

The dangers of spiking
This month, Goole policing team talks to us about the dangers of spiking drinks and what to do if you believe yours has been tampered with
“It can be difficult to tell if your drink has been spiked but if you notice any changes to the appearance or taste of your drink, stop drinking it. If you’re in a bar or club tell staff or security immediately”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
Spiking is when someone puts alcohol or drugs into another person’s drink or body without their consent or knowledge.
People can also be a victim of ‘needle spiking’, which is injecting someone with drugs without their consent.
Spiking can happen to anyone, anywhere and can be carried out by strangers or people you know.
Spiking someone could come under a number of criminal offences, which can carry sentences of up to 10 years in prison; even when no other offence, like theft or assault, has happened.
The signs of being spiked
It can be difficult to tell if your drink has been spiked but if you notice any changes to the appearance or taste of your drink, stop drinking it. If you’re in a bar or club tell staff or security immediately.

If you think you or a friend has been spiked it’s important to tell someone as soon as you can.

• Stay with your friend and keep talking to them.
• Don’t let them go home on their own or leave with someone you don’t know.
• Report to the police online, on 101 or, in an emergency, call 999.
If you or someone else have symptoms
• If you are worried call 111.
• Call an ambulance if the symptoms get worse.
• If you think there may have been a sexual assault go to your nearest sexual assault referral centre (SARC) for specialist care and support.

What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a paid job where the employee learns and gains valuable experiences. Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning with a college, university or training provider which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.
An apprenticeship includes:
• Paid employment
• Hands-on-experience in a sector/role of interest
• At least 20% off-the-job training
• Formal assessment which leads to a nationally recognised qualification
Who can apply? An apprenticeship is a great paid work opportunity for people over the age of 16 who are:
• Early in their career
• Looking to upskill in their current job
• Looking for a career change
• Not in full-time education
Apprenticeship levels
Different levels equate to different qualification levels.
An apprenticeship can start at any level, but some may require:
• Previous qualifications such as English or maths GCSEs
• Additional training in English or maths to ensure the apprentice is at the right level Levels start at Intermediate – Level 2 and equivalent to GCSE, through to Degree levels 6 and 7. Alongside on-the-job training, apprentices spend at least 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning. Off-the-job training is delivered by subject experts and can include:
• Teaching theory (e.g. classroom lessons and online learning)
• Practical training (e.g. shadowing, industry visits)
• Learning support and time to write assignments
The training can take place in or out of work. Some employers will offer in-house training, others may work with colleges, universities etc. The training must equate to 20% of the overall contracted hours for the duration of the apprenticeship. It can be daily, weekly, or as a block release.
Apprenticeship benefits
A paid option for anyone wanting to gain experience, upskill or change career because they offer
the chance to earn whilst working and studying.
The benefits to completing an apprenticeship include:
• Experience and skills development
• A nationally recognised qualification (with no tuition fees)
• Employee benefits and a wage
• Exposure to industry professionals
Apprenticeship wage
Earnings will depend on the industry, location and the level of apprenticeship chosen. If aged between 16 and 18 or in the first year, the apprentice is entitled to the apprentice rate. If aged 19 and over and you have completed the first year, they are entitled to the National Minimum Wage. This is the minimum an apprentice can earn, many employers offer apprentices a competitive salary.
There are no student loan or tuition fees because it is funded by the government and the employer. The apprentice will need to cover the cost of their day-to-day expenses, such as lunch and travel. If aged 16 to 24 and a care leaver, they will receive a £1,000 bursary payment to support them in their first year.
This month, Jobcentre Goole explains what an apprenticeship is, what the benefits are and how it can be a great route to go down when starting your career
