Hello and welcome to your July edition of Our Goole.

What lovely weather we have had in June! Let’s hope that continues into July, eh? This month will see the school year come to an end - we hope you have some brilliant plans organised with the family over the summer holidays, whether that be jetting off somewhere or staying local. In this edition, we showcase the brilliant work Kelly and Darren from local charity Memory Bear 4U have done over the last

10 years in creating over 1,500 memory bears for those who may have lost a loved one. We also chat to local group Friends of West Park, who are holding their annual Vintage Fair this month and celebrate 100 years of vintage stalls.

A Humberside Police officer and a long-serving retired officer turned volunteer have both been awarded honours in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours.

Local charity recycling old clothes into memory keepsakes

In 2013, Memory Bear 4U founder Kerry was diagnosed with a chronic illness and, unable to work any longer, was advised by a doctor to ‘get a hobby’ to keep both her hands and memory working. She made her first Memory Bear for her husband Darren using old clothing but items still loved by her children Jack and Georgia

couple have made keepsakes to celebrate newborns using their first baby grow, towel etc, brides using both the groom’s suit and part of the bridal gown, uniforms from military, schools, scouts etc. A large number of the bears are also sadly made from clothing of loved ones who have passed to keep as a cherished memory rather than keeping the clothes hidden in a wardrobe or landfill.

One thing led to another and fast forward 10 years, with the help of Darren, little did Kerry know she was going to have made over 1,500 memory bears with all profits made going to local charities or organisations.

The most recent donation was £500 to Riverside Special Educational Needs School. Bears can be made from any items of material and the

make them smile about their loved ones, then we try and incorporate that memory somehow in to the bear. We are proud of the bears we make and even more proud of the fact we are able to help our local community”

The couple have often been asked to make a bear for an organisation to raffle or auction off to raise funds and are very happy to help out if they can. One of their bears even made it to the hallowed turf of Wembley as mascot for Hull FC in the 2017 Rugby League Challenge Cup Final. This bear was later raffled off to raise funds for a young six-year-old boy from Hull, far left, who was having treatment for a life-threatening illness.

Local police recognised in

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about how a Humberside Police officer and a long-serving retired officer turned volunteer have both been awarded accolades in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours

“The awards, which are bestowed on individuals by the King himself, are a huge honour and we are incredibly proud that Danny and Graham have been recognised”.

King’s Birthday Honours

Danny Fleming, a police officer with almost 20 years’ service, receives the King’s Police Medal (KPM) for his services to policing and for his role as an ambassador for Humberside Police in his capacity as a cadet leader and community cohesion officer.

In his spare time, Danny works tirelessly to support a huge number of charities that work with some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Talking about the accolade, Chief Constable Lee Freeman KPM said: “Danny is a very worthy recipient of the King’s Police Medal. He regularly acts as ambassador for Humberside Police and is incredibly effective at engaging hard-to-reach communities and those in need. This award is well deserved and testament to all he does for Humberside and the community at large.”

Graham Benson, a retired officer receives the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his commitment to the community and for his 40 years’ service working first as a police officer, and then returning quickly after

retiring as a volunteer for Humberside Police. With nearly half a century of commitment to Humberside Police, Graham is the epitome of Humberside Police – he knows his Goole community incredibly well.

“Graham is a worthy recipient of a British Empire Medal,” said Chief Constable Lee Freeman KPM. “He has worked tirelessly for over 45 years to protect and serve the communities of the East Riding. He is wellregarded, well-known and much-loved among both our colleagues and the community.

“I’d like to take this time to thank Graham, on behalf of everyone at Humberside Police, for his dedication to the Force – he is one of our longest-serving officers in history, so today’s acknowledgement is very much deserved.”

Vintage Fair 2023

Friends of West Park are back and proud to present Vintage in the Park which will take place on Sunday 30th July 12-4pm

This year the group are encouraging vintage stall holders to bring a vintage game to add to their display as a bit of family fun.

The hugely popular event will be celebrating 100 years of West Park.

On the day you can expect to see classic cars, displays and exhibits, dancing along with music from DJ Major Swing and Kitty as well as entertainer Neil Wilde.

Georgina Petty, part of the Friends of West Park, told Our Goole: “We are very excited to be collaborating with Goole Library and Museum this year. They will be bringing artefacts, information and intriguing pieces of Goole history to share with us on the day. We would also love people to get involved and share their memories with us as part of an ongoing exhibition about West Park in the Library and Museum,

which is just being set up at the time of writing. All being well J Petty Motors will be bringing a 1920s Sunbeam and 1947 Alvis which have been lovingly restored for the day. We had lots of ideas about how to celebrate 100 years of West Park (first opened 13th September 1923). It’s been such a big year with the Coronation that we didn’t want to pass up such a great opportunity to celebrate the jewel in Goole’s crown. The group hoped that this event would be a fitting way to weave past, present and future, bringing everyone in the community together to celebrate the ‘Grand Old Lady of Goole.”
