MEET ONE OF THE WINNERS YEAR’S GOOLE & HOWDENSH BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWA Our Goole chatted to Phillip Parkin from Parkin Family Butchers who were crowned the winners of the Marketing Excellence Award. The winner of this award had to show they’d developed and implemented an innovative marketing strategy to achieve a measureable impact on business Parkin Family Butchers is a small family run business in the heart of Howden town centre, which takes pride on its customer relations, some of which are 3rd/4th generations of the same family. The butchers like to supply locally sourced meat, poultry and game with a personal, friendly service.
How did it feel to win Marketing Excellence Award? We were well chuffed and totally blown away when they announced we’d won, especially as we were up against some top competition.
What services do you provide? We provide a hands-on quality personal service.
What are your plans for the upcoming year? With the crises the country is in at the moment, surviving the next few months will see priority given to our loyal customers but in the long run, continue what we do best - serving local meat to the best of our ability and promoting the high street butchers.
What makes you proud of your business? We are very proud that we are keeping the business thriving in these modern times against tough competition from the likes of the supermarkets.
And in these past few months, Parkin Family Butchers has kept open supplying the community with a variety of meats and baked goods, all fresh and locally sourced.
Did you enjoy your night at the awards? We thoroughly enjoyed the awards night. It was a lovely evening with a great atmosphere.
So as we enter the summer months, be sure to visit Parkin Family Butchers for all those tasty meats to put on the BBQ!
When was the business set up? Myself and Marie have run the business for 16 years taking over from my parents who had it for over 35 years but it has been a butcher’s shop for more than 150 years.

Meet the Covid-19 Snake! community together during If you have been out getting your daily exercise around Goole, you may have seen the Covid-19 snake. It’s created by children/families placing a decorated stone in a line and as more people take part, the snake will get even longer! Each pebble is decorated in a different way and over 200 stones now form the snake’s body. Members of the community have also started a collection of blank pebbles that people can help themselves to if they are struggling to find one. Our Goole chatted to Megan and Demi Pollard who started the project.

There are all sorts of shapes, sizes, colours, rainbows, nurses, ladybird, space themes. “It’s just something to keep the children busy, gives them something to do, keeps everyone connected and brings everyone together as a community. Not only the children but we now know of elderly in the bungalows nearby who go out each day to see how it’s getting on, which is all we aimed to do. A lady thanked us as her 84-year-old dad nearby has been out every day to see the added stones, which has really picked him up and brightened his day. This makes me so please as this is all we aimed to do and we
have done it. We want to brighten up people’s day and make people smile.” Megan and Demi along with the whole community have showed how even in difficult and uncertain times, everyone can come together to keep spirits up. So if you are looking for a fun activity to do at home with your children, why not create your own pebble and head down to the park on Murham Avenue and watch the snake get longer and longer! Thinking of selling/buying during the pandemic? You can put your home on the market and start to look for properties you want to move into, either to let or purchase. However, if any member of the household being viewed is showing symptoms or is self-isolating then estate agents should not physically visit the property. We will complete a risk assessment for every appointment to ensure you and the agent are both safe. • To help prevent the spread of infection, you are encouraged to do the majority of your property searching online and only view the properties you believe you are most likely to want to move into. • Agents may ask home occupiers to conduct virtual viewings (via smartphone apps). • As usual, you can also start to bring together the documentation necessary to sell your property. • If you wish to buy a new-build property you should make contact with the developer in the usual way. You should be able to view the show home or visit the particular plot you are interested in purchasing, although there will be appointment systems in place. • Viewings should be conducted by appointment only and no open house viewings should take place.
• If your property is being viewed, you should open all the internal doors prior to the viewing, and allow access to hand sanitiser or handwashing facilities and ideally separate towels/paper towels. It would be preferable for viewers to carry their own hand sanitiser. • We encourage that you vacate your property whilst viewings are taking place in order to minimise your contact with those not in your household. • When viewing a property, all parties should avoid touching surfaces where possible. GOOLE PARKRUN CELEBRATES ITS 5TH ANNIVERSARY On 30th May 2020, Goole Parkrun would’ve been celebrating its 5th birthday but due to coronavirus the event cannot go ahead
Usually every Saturday hundreds of people would head down to West Park Goole to take part in Parkrun, a free event for all in the community and organised by volunteers. Anyone can run, jog or walk 5k or simply spectate and give support to the runners. Events take place across the country but due to Covid-19 and the restrictions put in place, all Parkruns had to be suspended. However, as the Government is starting to relax restrictions, we are no doubt getting closer to the point where Parkrun events will return to their communities. At the moment all events are suspended until the end of June, however, visit Goole Parkrun on Facebook for the latest updates.
Although the birthday Parkrun cannot go ahead, this didn’t stop The Goole Parkrun Core Team not being able to mark the special occasion. Instead the team thought it would be nice to mark the anniversary with some of the community’s favourite Parkrun memories. The team posted on their Facebook page: “Whether you have participated, volunteered, spectated or just enjoy the Parkrun ethos… we’d love to hear from you.” Above is a selection of our community’s favourite memories of Parkrun at West Park Goole.
