THE WINNERS 2020 The achievements and successes of local businesses were celebrated at the 10th annual Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards, which took place at Goole High School on Friday 21st February Over 250 guests attended the awards ceremony, which was compered by Harry Gration, and is organised by a committee of volunteers from the local business community. The event’s founder, local businessman Garrey Haase, who is chairman of the organising committee and owns the Yorkshire Eyewear branches in Goole and Howden, was recognised with a special award for his contribution over the last decade, and guests enjoyed a slice of birthday cake to mark the event’s 10th anniversary. The big winner of the night, scooping the Large Business of the Year and Overall Business of

the Year titles, was Ebuyer UK Ltd. Angela Martinson, a retired head teacher from Howden, was presented with the Tim Richardson Lifetime Achievement Award. This was in recognition of the significant contribution she has made to the local community and economy through her voluntary roles on the Howden events committee, the Ashes Playing Field Trust and as a former member of Howden Town Council. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal and celebrated the success of the businesses in our local community. Although this year CreateTVT (the publishers of Our Goole) didn’t pick up an award, we are hugely proud of ourselves to be nominated for ACCOMMODATION | WEDDINGS | EVENTS Proud to be finalists in the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2020

two awards at this year’s show. There was a huge calibre of talent and we believe all the winners, not only were amazing, but were all deserved winners. Hopefully we will be back next year to pick up an award. Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said: “The Our Goole team had a fantastic night and it was great to see some many brilliant businesses in and around Goole being celebrated. “Having won ‘Contribution to the Community’ in 2019, we were extremely proud of ourselves that we were nominated for the award again this year. We were up against excellent businesses and a huge congratulations to Cobus Communications who took home the award. “Not winning this year has given the team more motivation to get shortlisted again next

year as we continue to help local businesses with advertising and bring more feel-good community stories to our loyal readers.” Speaking on behalf of the organising committee, Garrey Haase said: “I’d like to thank all of our fantastic finalists for entering; they gave our panel of independent judges a really tough time choosing the winners and should all be incredibly proud of their achievements. I also want to pass our congratulations on to our very deserving winners. The whole evening was a wonderful showcase for the impressive achievements of our local business community, not to mention its creativity and diversity! “Finally, I’d like to thank our judges and everyone who helps to make the annual awards ceremony happen, particularly my fellow committee members who have worked hard

FROM A POLICE Continuing to tackle This month Sgt David Lonsdale talks to us about the Goole Policing Team’s latest priorities and how it is continuing to tackle youth crime in the area

“I want to make it really clear, though, that despite what has been rumoured on social media, we do not have an issue with ‘gangs’ here in Goole.”

E PERSPECTIVE:

youth crime in Goole Where we have reports of the teenagers causing a disruption, behaving antisocially or committing low level offences, such as shop theft, we do everything we can to help these young people choose a more positive path. Last month, my column focussed on how we are working closely with Goole Youth Action to increase opportunities for young people in the area. I want to make it really clear, though, that despite what has been rumoured on social media, we do not have an issue with ‘gangs’ here in Goole. What we do have, on occasion, is groups of teenagers gathering around the main shopping areas which we know can be intimidating for people using the shops. I want to offer my reassurance that we are continuing to work hard to make sure that Goole continues to feel safe for its residents.

Whilst we will always consider options that help young people learn and make better choices in life, when it’s necessary and appropriate we do seek prosecution. One of the local PCSOs, Sam Chandler, has been working as the local East Riding of Yorkshire Council ASB officer. A room has been made available in the Bell and Crown pub to provide a regular Youth Hub. These types of initiatives give kids something to do, keeps them out of trouble and helps them make friends and build relationships with the local community too. The Youth Hub is in the very early stages but it’s hoped it will be a success. The local neighbourhood team can regularly be seen out and about around the town, anyone with information or concerns can talk to them.

You can report information by calling our non-emergency 101 line or via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Local woman is plannin Kilimanjaro to raise mo In June 2020, Sophie Moss is planning on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for charity. Sophie is completing this huge challenge on her own and is hoping to raise ÂŁ4,000. Our Goole had a chat with Sophie to find out more about what has inspired her to take on the tallest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

ng on climbing Mount oney for charity Tell us more about your challenge? I’m climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in order to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

It’s been a while since I did something as huge as that so 10 years on I wanted to do something big again, for another great cause to help others.

Why did you decide on this charity? Cancer devastates everybody on more than one occasion throughout our lifetimes, whether it be ourselves or family and friends. There isn’t one isolated story or reason I can explain as to why Cancer Research is an important cause to me because there are multiple. Whether it be family members I have lost or had close scares, to people I know that are suffering right now.

Have you climbed anything of this scale before? I’ve always been enthusiastic about the outdoors but, no, I have never undergone a challenge as big as this before. Having researched a bit more as to what is required to complete Kilimanjaro, I have learned that it is no mean feat and yes that does make me nervous. I think it is going to be a monumental challenge

that is going to push me to my limits. I just hope I can do myself and my sponsors proud. What are you most looking forward to? I am most looking forward to seeing how far I can push my body and my mind and overcome what is quite possibly the biggest challenge of my life to date. Everyone here at Our Goole is wishing Sophie the best of luck. If you would like to sponsor Sophie please visit www. justgiving.com/fundraising/ sophie-moss7?utm_ source=Whatsapp

Raising money for Cancer Research UK helps to fund more clinical trials to bring new treatments to patients that so desperately need it as quickly and safely as possible. Have you taken part in fundraisers before? When I was 18 I raised money and travelled to Africa to help children in need out there. Why did you decide to put yourself forward for this challenge? research that will deliver the treatments of tomorrow, enable staff to benefit from specialist medical training, and install state-of-the-art equipment and community services across our region. The charity promises to ensure that funds, however big or small, are used to the best effect to make a positive difference to the community’s healthcare. Charity manager, Clare Woodard, said: “The charity’s aim is to raise £100,000 to transform a large courtyard area at Goole hospital and create a dedicated therapeutic sensory garden space – suited to all patients, those living with learning and physical disabilities, dementia and other conditions which may limit mobility. “We also hope the new garden will be used by staff and visitors too and expect it to become an important part of the hospital site.”

reminiscence, with patients often remembering previous gardens from the sight and scent of plants and flowers. Other additions to the garden will include soothing music and sounds, lights and different textures of plants and trees. “The garden will have many multi-sensory aspects and patients and visitors will hopefully enjoy lots of different experiences, from the gentle sound of trickling water, birdsong, wildlife, scented flowers and homegrown fruits and vegetables.” Staff members and their families have already given up their spare time to volunteer each month to keep the garden areas tidy and are enthusiastic about rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in. For more information, please visit www.healthtreefoundation.org.uk

Goole matron Kerry Owen and ward manager Tracey Ward have shared their vision for the garden. Kerry said: “We would love to create a garden with lots of uses and benefits for all, with lots of elements to help engage patients such as a postbox, a bus stop, faux shop fronts, accessible raised flower beds for gardening therapies, plants, lights in the trees and stimulating artwork on the walls. “Fruit trees, brightly coloured scented flowers, pots, herbs and vegetables will all add to the enhanced environment. It will benefit patients as well as nature.” There is lots of evidence that gardens and gardening are beneficial to mental and physical health. For those patients with mobility issues, the garden will be a great space for outdoor physiotherapy sessions. Seats and benches will allow patients to enjoy the fresh air in a safe environment away from the often busy hospital wards. Tracey added: “For dementia patients and those coping with confusion and memory loss, plants and flowers are proven to be good tools for Our Goole is brought to you by CreateTVT. Call 01405 819141.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green talks about the benefits of making your business resilient and how to do it

Is your business resilient? We hear a lot about business resilience today, but do we really act on it? Does your business quickly adapt to any disruptions whilst maintaining its operations, safeguarding people, assets and the brand? Along the same lines as business continuity, resilience focuses on preserving processes and procedures that help your business survive the unexpected. Businesses are faced with constant threats from: • Natural disasters - flooding has impacted on many businesses and what about fire? • Health issues (think of the coronavirus and the hospitality industry and importing).

Page 22

• Cyber security, the whole system fails! Can you survive? What about data breaches? • Terrorism - going back to 2017 and the Manchester Arena bombing, it was not just the immediate aftermath in which businesses suffered, people continued to avoid the area and many businesses did not survive. Think about civil unrest - it does happen. • Other businesses going into liquidation and the impact on your supply chain. • Theft, vandalism, fraud - all these things can damage your reputation and put your business at risk. For further advice contact Heidi Green, Senior Business Advisor for Selby District Council via email at hgreen@selby.gov.uk.

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc explains everything you need to know about a planning application

How to object to a planning application Where can I find details of the application? Local councils are supposed to notify neighbours likely to be affected in writing. Check before you buy If you’re thinking of buying a property, it’s worth asking your estate agent to check with the sellers if they know of any planning applications on neighbouring land. What are valid grounds for objecting? – Reduction in light – Overlooking your property – Anything out of character with other developments in the area.

Will I need professional help? No, unless you are objecting to a very large and complex planning application. How can I make an objection? You need to send a letter or email to the Local Planning Authority (LPA). Content provided is for information purposes only. Independent and professional advice should be taken before buying, selling, letting or renting property, or buying financial products.

This month’s column, brought to you by the Jobcentre, focuses on Universal Credit, what support it gives you, how to claim it and what you need to make a claim.

Introduction to making a Universal Credit claim Universal Credit is an in and out of work benefit. It has been introduced to give you the support you need to find and progress in work and benefit from all the positives that work brings. Universal Credit has been introduced to replace the following benefits: Child Tax Credit; Housing Benefit; Income Support; income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA); income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA); Working Tax Credit. CLAIMING UNIVERSAL CREDIT In most cases, Universal Credit claims are made online. You will then meet your work coach at an interview in your local Jobcentre. The work coach will guide and support you and, where appropriate, help you into work by providing personalised advice. If you do not have internet access you can use the Page 30

computers or wi-fi in your local Jobcentre. If you are unable to use the online claims process, even with assistance - for example, you are unable to access the internet due to a health condition or disability that limits what you can do, you will need to call the Universal Credit helpline:

their online account. Use your account to report changes, get support and use your journal to send messages to your work coach. Almost all Universal Credit claims will be managed using an online account. If you need some help to use the internet, please talk to your work coach or case manager.

Telephone: 0800 328 5644

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF THINGS THAT ARE NEEDED TO MAKE A UNIVERSAL CREDIT CLAIM: • an address • email address • telephone number • bank account details • ID

HELP TO CLAIM Citizens Advice deliver a ‘Help to Claim’ service to anyone who requires support to make a new Universal Credit claim. This service offers support to help you make a Universal Credit claim through to getting your first correct payment. It can be accessed at any time until the first full correct payment of Universal Credit is in place. You can access the service online via web chat, through a Freephone number and face to face with your local Citizens Advice service.
