ity Safety Volunteer The Community Safety Volunteer scheme was first established in April 2008 to promote community involvement in policing through volunteering. The aim of the scheme is to encourage those living and working in the area to use their skills, experience and knowledge to assist and support Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables, support staff and fire service personnel in their daily business. A team of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and cultures already works across the Humberside force area, making a positive contribution to the area’s communities and using its experiences and skills to enhance the work of the police and fire service. Matt Sutcliffe, Group Manager Public Safety with the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “The Police/Fire volunteer partnership is now firmly established within our toolbox of options for supporting the organisation and helping to make our communities a safer place to live and work. The commitment and professionalism of the volunteers is an absolute privilege to witness and support. It also important to recognise the life experience and skills the volunteers bring to our organisation. Volunteers are firmly embedded into the tapestry
of work streams to ensure we are an effective organisation.” What can becoming a Police Volunteer offer? • Enhances your CV • Get involved in local community events • Makes a real difference to policing in your area What do volunteers assist with? The tasks performed by our volunteers vary widely, but will never replace roles held by paid staff. Local charity helping chi in Goole receive free mea Due to the uncertain times coronavirus has brought on the nation, it can be a difficult time for those families who struggle to support their family and put food on the table Local charity Lunchbox Goole is helping children and young people around Goole by setting up a free meal scheme MondayFriday 12-2pm at Revive Church through the school holidays. Since its launch, it has had hundreds of families visiting and has featured on BBC Look North for the brilliant work it is doing. Our Goole chatted to Bibhash Dash, a volunteer for the organisation, to find out more about Lunchbox Goole. How did Lunchbox Goole come about? Lunchbox Goole came about after the Government initially refused to extend the school free meals vouchers’ scheme. It meant hundreds of children and young people risked facing holiday hunger during what was already a difficult time with the lockdown and all the financial hardships that came with it for parents. Despite the Page 14
challenges, we secured our food donations from Fare Share, got our promotions done via local and regional media, and before you knew it, we were giving away on average 40 meals a day. We plan to carry on for the duration of the summer holidays. But if all goes well, we may even resume the service during other major holiday periods such as Christmas. What services do you provide? We operate out of our Revive Church HQ on Mariners Street, Goole. We provide a free meal to anyone that needs it. You do not need to meet any eligibility criteria of any kind. There are no forms to fill out or vouchers to hand in or benefits’ evidence to provide. If you need a meal, we are here for you. You get a main item in your lunch bag, such as a sandwich, pizza, lasagne or pasta (really, the list changes day to day) and a few standard add-ons like crisps, a chocolate bar and a drink.

How has the community reacted to what you offer? We have been utterly blown away by the response. It’s not just that the members of the public have come to rely on us to alleviate their food worries, it’s also people and businesses that have stepped up to offer their goods and donations. We’ve managed to roll out Pizza Party Wednesdays thanks to Lorenzo’s Italian (Barmby on the Marsh) donating some amazing pizzas, and a fantastic Fish Friday thanks to donations from Grimsby’s Fish2Go and our local Kingsway Fisheries in Goole. And on a regular basis we get donations from the local Morrisons as well as from food banks across town. Most importantly, the feedback we get from the general public has been brilliant, especially seeing some of the positive comments on Facebook.
What makes you proud about Lunchbox Goole? The sheer speed in which we were able to identify the problems facing Goole and come up with a solution still gives me goosebumps. We literally had about two or three weeks to get the project off the ground, get all the donations in, get the promotion done and then begin operations. I feel proud to have been part of such an amazing team. What are your plans going forward? Thanks to the superb framework we’ve laid down with the summer meals project, I think we are well placed to carry on our service through other major holiday periods such as Christmas. This month, the Jobcentre is making an appeal to employers to offer a small amount of their time towards mentoring young people.
Calling all employers Could you mentor young jobseekers?
Are you an employer wanting to offer your support to the local community? Are you willing to contribute a little of your time? If so, Goole Jobcentre would like to make an appeal to you to consider becoming an employment mentor to small groups of 18-24 year-old jobseekers. During the current economic climate, we feel it is as vitally important as ever that our young people are offered the very best opportunities to give them a head start in their working lives. The Government is tackling youth unemployment with support from a range of employers, trade bodies, stakeholders and other partners.
As part of their package of measures to support this, the Government recently introduced Mentoring Circles, a national initiative directed at supporting young jobseekers to overcome the barriers they face and to find the work they want. The aim of Mentoring Circles is to give young people: • An awareness of how employers recruit, including information about their selection criterion - delivered by a senior representative; • Practical help with application forms/CVs/competencies; • The chance to practise interview skills, receiving constructive feedback and tips from the employer organisations;
• An opportunity to visit employer premises, gaining insight into the working practices of the organisation. Employers up and down the country, large and small, have signed up to offer their support in delivering their expertise, knowledge and direction to young people wanting sound advice on what employers look for in CVs, interviews, their expectations in the workplace and career progression.
