Hello and welcome to your February/ March edition of Scunthorpe Journal!

2023 is here! We hope all our lovely readers kicked off the new year with a bang and are possibly still sticking to their New Year’s resolutions? No? Us neither! Just like last year, Scunthorpe Journal is bringing you the best offers from the local businesses and showcasing some feel-good stories for you to enjoy.

In this issue, we are celebrating some great local campaigns in the area doing brilliant things to help the community’s wellbeing. One being the ‘Ask for Angela’ initiative that

allows people who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened to discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ‘Angela’. We also feature the great work happening over at Scunthorpe hospital to make those who are coming to the end of their life the best it can be.

‘Ask For Angela’ launched to help people keep safe on nights out in Scunthorpe

Ask for Angela is aimed at anyone getting unwanted attention in a local pub or other venue but feels unable to seek help – all they have to do is approach a staff member and ask for “Angela”.

Staff at signed-up venues have been trained and will know the person needs help. They will then help get them out of the situation without fuss.

This could mean taking them to a safe space, calling a taxi, reuniting them with a friend,

alerting security or even calling the emergency services.

Councillor Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, welcomed the scheme: “This is a great example of businesses working together with the police and others to reassure and protect people. Anyone who feels they are in an uncomfortable situation while out and about can just Ask For Angela.

“You might be on a date that isn’t working out, or with people who won’t take ‘no’ for an answer – by speaking to a member of

staff and asking for Angela, you can alert others and help keep yourself safe.”

Ask For Angela is being promoted by the North Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (CSP), which includes North Lincolnshire Council, Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue, Ongo, the National Probation Service, NHS Humber and North Yorkshire ICB and the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner.

People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can now discreetly get help in a raft of pubs and bars across North Lincolnshire

“The Ask for Angela scheme is a really good system that allows people to discreetly ask for help when in a difficult situation.

“This is a national scheme that is now being rolled out across the whole of Humberside and is already being effectively used in night-time economy establishments.”

Chief Superintendent Matt Peach of Humberside Police said:

“This is an excellent scheme that the CSP are pleased to support.

“As a partnership we are committed to ensuring people

enjoy themselves on a night out but should any issues arise that they feel safe.

“Nationally this initiative has been shown to be simple, yet effective, that those who may find themselves in a vulnerable situation ensure they have a discreet way of asking for help. We are all committed to enhancing the support in North Lincolnshire.”

Venues that have signed up the scheme include The Tavern, The Blue Bell, Schnapps bar, Class 6 and Café Indie in Scunthorpe

and The Woolpack, The Black Bull, and The White Horse in Brigg.

Warning over recent burglaries

In this issue, Scunthorpe policing team is issuing advice following recent reports of burglaries in Scunthorpe where homes have been broken into and valuables, keys and vehicles have been stolen

“We want to catch whoever is committing these offences and would appeal to the public to please report anything they see that looks suspicious.”

It’s vital to leave your home secure whenever you leave it. Getting into an ‘exit routine’ can help ensure that you don’t forget obvious, important things, like not leaving your valuables near windows, or no lights on if it will be dark before you get home. Here’s what you should do just before you go out.

Inspector Craig Leitch said, “We are working hard to find those responsible and bring them to justice.

“We want to catch whoever is committing these offences and would appeal to the public to please report anything they see that looks suspicious.

“If you see anyone acting in a suspicious way or see anything out of the ordinary, please call us straight away, if there is a crime in progress or a risk to life, call us on 999.

“I would also remind people to follow some simple tips to keep their properties and vehicles safe.”

General car crime prevention advice

• If you have a garage, keep your car in it when it is not being used.

• If you don’t have a garage, park your car as close to your property as possible to make access difficult.

• Where possible, block your car in with another vehicle or a driveway parking post which would mean the vehicle couldn’t be driven away.

• Install CCTV and a motion sensor security light covering the area where your vehicle is kept, such as your driveway or the street outside your property.

• Check and make sure that no valuables are left in

sight in the vehicle and keep the glove box empty where possible. Consider leaving it open to show there is nothing inside.

Keyless crime prevention advice

• Use a blocking pouch (Faraday Bag) for your key – make sure you store your spare key in one too.

• Turn off keyless fobs’ wireless signal - wireless signals on some keyless fobs can be switched off.

• Use a steering wheel lock or car alarm - most modern car thieves are equipped with laptops rather than hand tools, so mechanical devices – such as steering wheel locks – can be a real deterrent.

Here are five tips to help you keep your home and belongings stay safe while you’re away:

1. If you’re off on holiday and wish to post anything on social media, make sure your posts aren’t public and that they’re only seen by your friends

2. Leave lights and a radio on a timer to make the property appear occupied

3. Get a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your property or join a Neighbourhood or resident Watch Scheme

4. Consider asking your neighbours to close curtains after dark and to park on your drive

5. Remember to cancel newspaper and milk deliveries

• Re-programme your keys - If you buy a secondhand vehicle, there is a risk that you may not be given all of the sets of car keys. Reprogramming your car keys can stop thieves using stolen keys.

Can you help raise funds for our endof-life patients?

A call has gone out for local people to help fund bags, jewellery pouches, toiletries, wedding decorations and teddy bears

These ‘little extras’ have been found to help our staff care for people who are at the end of their life. The bags and pouches are for relatives to take home their loved one’s possessions, the toiletries for people staying overnight last minute, and the bears for patients and their families.

The Health Tree Foundation also helps fund ‘wedding boxes’ which are used by ward staff to decorate rooms, if an end-of-life patient books a ceremony in the hospital.

The charity splashed out on lots of these 12 months ago to support our end-of-life team in rolling out their Bluebell and Family’s Voices project. This aims to provide individually tailored packages of care for patients and their families. However, stocks are running low and The Health Tree Foundation is hoping donations can swell their funds in order to buy more.

Julieann Woollas, End of Life Lead Nurse, said: “The Bluebell project is helping to make a real difference to our end-of-life patients, as well as their loved ones. It is often the little things that can make a big difference, such as teddy bears or toiletries. It would be wonderful if people would support this, and help us, help our staff make a difference.

“There is a common saying for end-of-life care and that is that we have One Chance to Get it Right, and this is something we strive towards.”

Sara Storrs, Ward 16 Manager at Scunthorpe hospital, explained why they were important. She said: “We always aim to provide high quality care when someone is at the end of their life. At the end of the day, it is just as important when someone dies as it is when they are born.

“We know a hospital is such a clinical setting no matter what we do, however, by being able to provide these little

touches it goes a long way. Just having a stock of toiletries for relatives who want to stay over to be with their loved one, bags for people to take home belongings, and pouches to keep jewellery safe.

“The teddy bears have also proved popular. We place them

in the arms of patients. When they have passed, we give it to relatives as it often the last thing their loved one touched, which makes it special.

“They may seem like little things, but they can and do, make a difference to someone’s experience of death and dying.

It is often the little things that makes a big difference,” added Sara.
