Elmet Lions have 12 members who organise fundraising events in order to give money back to the community. Their major events include:

- The Santa Sleigh which goes round Sherburn and surrounding villages during December.

- The Great Selby Bike Ride which is a 25-mile route and a 45 mile route starting and finishing at Barlby High School, Selby.

-Giant Easter egg raffles

-Inter-pub quiz with 100 questions answered in 30 minutes.

Their Lionistic year starts from 1st July through to 30th June every year.

You can visit the Elmet Lions website where you can see where the hugely impressive £14,240 was distributed over the 2023/24, visit: elmet.lionsclub.co

Maggie Hartley, President of Elmet Lions, told Tadcaster Echo: “Thank you to all who follow us, help us, recycle items with us and donate to us. We couldn’t do it without you!”

Elmet Lions are a charity governed by The Charities Commission and are always looking for people to join them, so if you are enthusiastic, want to make a difference and help the local community, you can go to one of their monthly meetings or call or text Maggie on 07803 022423 – where you will be very welcome.

TANGO

Wetherby and District Foodbank has been helping local people since 2014. The foodbank covers a wide area, from the outer areas of Leeds across to the edge of York, taking in Tadcaster and the many villages in between

The last 10 years have seen a lot of changes. The number of people needing to use the foodbank has increased steadily and it has changed the way it operates in response.

It now runs a drop-in session at the Community Café at The Barn in Tadcaster every Wednesday morning during term time, moving to other Tadcaster community centres during the school holidays. In Wetherby, it currently runs a Saturday morning session in addition to its usual Tuesday and Friday morning slots.

Foodbank Coordinator, Jenny Firth told Tadcaster Echo: “More and more we’re finding that people who are in work need to use us, often to help tide them over at the end of the month when their wages run out or large bills need to be paid. The last few years have seen the number of people using the foodbank triple and we often run short of basic items.”

She added: “What many people don’t realise is the additional help we can offer. As well as food, we can also provide cleaning products, toiletries, baby products and pet food. Importantly, people can also access all kinds of advice at our sessions, from managing debt to help with bills, budgeting and

benefits. We’re here to make sure people get all the help they’re entitled to.”

So how does the foodbank run and where do donations come from?

The foodbank is run primarily by volunteers who process donations at the warehouse, run the dropin sessions in Tadcaster and Wetherby, organise collections of donations and deliveries to clients who can’t access public transport as well as a range of admin and support roles.

Foodbank Drop-in sessions: Tadcaster

Community Café, The Barn (term time) Wednesdays 10:30am – midday

Community Café venue changes for school holidays: Rosemary House: 7th August, 21st August and Calcaria House: 14th August, 28th August.

Can’t get to a session? Phone: 07840 455725 and leave a message. They can deliver if needed.
