Moments in Flight

Karl Mårtens – on seeing a flock of Rhinoceros Hornbills in Borneo.

Zen philosophy teaches us to “observe the moment” – to try to catch every instant and see what it is really like, and to be attentive to its transient nature. And also to observe how these fleeting moments can be full of energy and beauty. Bird painting can be approached in much the same way.

Birds can move so very quickly. From one moment to another they change position, location or shape. This is particularly evident during flight. Sometimes their wing movements are quicker than the normal eye can perceive – but with some training one can capture these movements and freeze them into specific moments in flight. This is what I try to capture with my brush: that moment of change between one movement and another, between one direction and another, or between one mood and another. Just as one can capture these transient moments with a brush, we can train ourselves to observe them in our own lives and see the beauty. This is the ancient teaching of the Zen brush.
