KATE RHODES

There are two important things we should give our children; one is roots and the other is wings

Hodding Carter

have always loved the sentiments of this quotation – it resonates with my upbringing and has been a guiding mantra for our children. It is also the bedrock of my art practice. am inspired by open landscapes, the light, the space – the wilder the better. Whether walking through a landscape, sitting amidst sand dunes, sheltering behind a stone wall or in the shade of a tree, I am continually sketching and absorbing my surroundings –capturing the changing elements and character of a place. This sketchbook practice grounds me, and my work, and gives it strong roots.

Once back in the studio, I want my paintings to have their own freedom. am not trying to replicate a specific view or scale up a study, but rather find my painting through starting intuitively, playing with different palettes of delicious colour and explorative mark-making. This process of applying paint, pouring, pushing, sweeping, and working spontaneously – building up the layers and textures – is key to my work. am responding

to my experience of the landscape but enjoying the unknown journey, and the happy accidents encountered when taking risks. am forever curious to explore new directions. ‘Roots and wings’, or one could say ‘soul and risk’, are core to my work.

Following Kate Rhodes’ artistic development over the last decade has been a great adventure. Her ‘roots’ are strong; a creative family history, a passion for drawing, and an innate sense of colour. It is only relatively recently that Rhodes, a graduate from Edinburgh College of Art (BA Hons) 1984-1989, has turned her attention to painting full-time. And with ‘wings’ outstretched her work has gained strength as demand for her colourful canvases grows apace.
