Charged After Laying Hands On Elissa Brett on Video at WNIT Game

MARCH 24, 2023
BOWLING GREEN, OH - MARCH 23: Memphis Tigers guard Jamirah Shutes (23) is escorted off of the court after an altercation with Bowling Green Falcons guard Elissa Brett (not pictured) during the postgame handshake following a third round college womens basketball game of the Womens National Invitational Tournament between the Memphis Tigers and the Bowling Green Flacons on March 23, 2023 at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio.
(Photo by Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Following Bowling Green’s 73-60 win over Memphis in the third round of the Women’s NIT on Thursday, Memphis guard Jamirah Shutes appeared to punch Bowling Green guard Elissa Brett in the face during the handshake line.
The punch, which was captured on video, resulted in Brett falling to the floor and Shutes being escorted off the court by Memphis personnel:
According to Jenna Lemoncelli of the New York Post, Shutes took an elbow to the face late in the first half and later elbowed Brett in the face during the second half.
The game took place on BGSU’s home court in Bowling Green, Ohio, and BGSU noted in a statement that the school’s police department was investigating the altercation.
TMZ Sports reported Friday that it was informed by Bowling Green officials that Shutes was charged with assault on Friday morning. Officials also said Brett is “recovering and doing well” despite experiencing some swelling in her right eye.
Brett, who is a senior, was second on the team in scoring in Thursday’s win with 15 points, plus she added six rebounds.
Shutes is also a senior and was a second-team All-AAC selection this season. She led Memphis in scoring on the year with 15.3 points per game and finished Thursday’s game with 13 points and four rebounds. - https://bleacherreport.com/

Mayoral debate at Northside
NewsTalk 96.5 and Sports Orthropedic and Spine hosted a Mayoral debate at Northside School auditorium Thursday evening.
The debate included 5 of the 6 candidates who qualified to be on the ballot for Mayor for the City of Jackson. Incumbent Mayor Scott Conger is being opposed by five oppo-
nents which include:
City Court Clerk Daryl Hubbard, Educator Lisa Williams-Lyons, precious 2019 Mayoral candidate Dr Jerry Woods, automotive software manager, Ray Condray and Paul Sherrod who did not show up for the debate. He had been
arrested in charges of domestic assault according to records at the Madison County jail.
He was still in custody and has a bond of $90,000 which had been set for 3 charges.
All candidates had opportunities to share their vision for the City of Jackson and each made their case for why the citizens should cast their votes for them.
Mayor Conger noted major investments in Jackson over time are the basis for his “progress over perfection”

COMMENTARY:
A historic Vote and the Tools It Gave Us
By Ben Jealous
Vice President Kamala Harris is sure to be remembered every March in Women’s History Month as the first woman and the first person of color to serve our nation in that position. As notable as those two facts are, she may grow to be known just as much for a single vote in the Senate that helped save the planet.
Last August, she broke the 50-50 deadlock between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate to pass the Inflation Reduction Act. That historic package, along with the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that Harris had crisscrossed the country in 2021 to build support for, give us a once-in-a-generation chance to protect the climate and build a cleaner, fairer economy. Both laws bear Harris’ mark. For example, the two packages provide billions to replace diesel school buses with electric ones and an additional tax credit for purchases that counties and cities make on their own. As a senator, Harris repeatedly sponsored bills to electrify the nation’s school buses. Similarly, she championed proposals to help recovery in low-income communities that bear a disproportionate burden of pollution and climate; the IRA includes $60 billion directed to help those places.
Harris’ role inside and outside Washington on environmental issues isn’t surprising. When she was elected San Francisco’s district attorney 20 years ago, she started one of the first environmental justice units in a prosecutor’s office. When she moved on to be California’s attorney general, she fought to protect the state from fossil fuel interests, winning tens of millions in civil settlements and a criminal indictment against the pipeline company responsible for an oil spill off Santa Barbara, as well as suing the federal government to block fracking off the coast. It’s a path others have been able to follow in the years since (Columbia University keeps a database of attorneys general’s environmental actions now).
It’s a concern that runs deep. Like I did, Harris grew up in environmentally conscious northern California in a household deeply involved in the civil rights movement. She learned early that conservation was a good thing, so much so that she has joked she couldn’t understand as a youngster why people she knew said conservatives were bad.
The Biden-Harris administration has provided leadership. With Congress, they’ve given us the tools to clean up pollution, to boost communities’ resilience to climate related natural disasters like wildfires, and to create good jobs
in clean manufacturing across the country in unprecedented ways. Through the infrastructure and inflation reduction packages, the United States can spend more than double protecting Earth than we spent putting astronauts on the moon.
“I think we all understand we have to be solutions driven. And the solutions are at hand,” Harris said at a climate summit earlier this month. “We need to make up for some lost time, no doubt. This is going to have an exponential impact on where we need to go.”
It’s time for the rest of us to pick up those tools and build. There are powerful interests that would be more than happy to let the inertia that allows people and places to be treated as disposable continue indefinitely. Our planet can’t afford that, and we have to marshal a movement to prevent it.
Ben Jealous is executive director of the Sierra Club. He is a professor of practice at the University of Pennsylvania and author of “Never Forget Our People Were Always Free,” published in January.

His major points were the reduction of the city’s debt, and investments in existing infrastructure improvements.
Candidate Lisa Williams-Lyons said as a resident of east Jackson “ she said there is a lack of “equity in the distribution of resources” that she understands first hand as being a part of one of those underserved communities”. She said both public and private partnerships to better serve and even out the allocation of resources”
Candidate and City court clerk Daryl Hubbard spoke about various issues involving Jackson’s youth and their relationship with the police, and the disconnect in schools. Hubbard also indicated troubling news out of city hall with
missing monies and the lack of support he has received from the Mayor since Conger took office, he complained that Conger has never offered to help improve conditions at city court” Condray noted according to data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2022, that “Jackson has a violent crime rate higher than the state and National averages”
In an effort to combat crime and lower those statistics, Condray said “he plans to be proactive with resources we have now to reduce crime in Jackson” He said “we need law and order” and make sure our police department has all resources needed, we don’t need to buy into this lawlessness of defunding the police”
about family values, Woods notes the lack of inclusion for different types of families. He explained there is an assumed “ideal family” but that single parent families often get excluded from that conversation”
“We don’t want to draw our family with a broad brush” said Woods
We need to make sure police have everything needed to do their jobs” we will make our City safe die families so we can enjoy living here in Jackson”
Dr Jerry Woods said in a rebuttal to Condray’s comment

Fishing Tips
Each year as fishing season nears I try to find valuable information that will add to your toolbox and put more fish in the cooler. Todays tips come from different professional fishermen who offer advise from their perspective. I think the one that is so important and easy is to constantly check your line throughout the day to make sure it is not frayed or twisted. Many trophy fish are lost due to weak lines which are preventable. It is a good idea to have a strategy and a game plan when fishing depending on what type of fishing you are doing. Luck is always great but a plan of action yields far greater results. Have rods rigged ahead of the trip and save yourself a lot of time fishing and not fixing reels. Bait that worked last time might and might not work this time. If your favorite bait is not working then move on to something else. Fish are funny and you never know what peaks their interest that day. Always remember that presentation is key when the bait enters the water as to not spook the fish. Fish like to attack their prey but they don’t want to be attacked. Whatever depth that most fish are caught at is the depth you need to stay with because they are usually suspended in the same school. It is true that they attend schools and if you don’t study fishing schoolwork they will be smarter than you. Be sure to study your fish school lesson so you can be smarter than the fish you are after.
Downtown Ricky Brown founder of the Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network and Sgt Charlie Childers of the New Highway Patrol were guests on the Eplus TV - 6 in the City Show last Tuesday. Brown shared with the show the orgin of the traffic spotters network which started at a local radio station as an idea which has grown to 30,000 members. Brown said “we are a volunteer organization of people who care about traffic safety and reports traffic conditions daily to the DTRB Facebook traffic page and local media outlets. “Our headquarters is with Thomas Media radio stations which share traffic reports daily on radio stations;
106.9, 95.7, 102.3, 107.7 and 96.1 along with our partner in news weather and traffic “WBBJ TV”. Through the cooperation of Jackson Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and local fire departments and EMS, we are able to share road conditions, street closures, traffic crashes and interstate highway conditions with the media and public.”
Sgt Childers and Lt Chris Hostick are the primary public information officers in west Tennessee district we communicate with daily to share important traffic information” the TDOT Tennessee Department of Transportation also provides valuable re-
sources such as the 511 system and the TDOT Smartway system which shows road conditions, traffic accidents and construction information via their app.”
Our entire purpose is to help provide informa-
tion to make highway safety an important part of our lives”
