The summer of 1989 holds a vivid memory for me – a day that sparked something special. A friend reached out seeking my help. He told me he had just bought an old car and needed me to tow it to his garage. Little did I know that day would be forever etched into my mind. The directions took us to a dilapidated farm in western PA. The owner greeted us and guided us into a barn that I was hoping wouldn’t fall over until after I was back outside again.

Nestled in a corner, resting under a dusty tarp, was a true gem of automotive history. Exuding the essence of street rod power, there it was--a decaying 1969 Boss 429 Mustang! Despite the faded paint and worn interior, I could sense the car’s storied past. I was sure this automobile dominated many late-night street races. The neglect the car had endured couldn’t overshadow the potential within it, just waiting for the right touch to bring it back to life.

When I first saw it, a mix of emotions flooded over me, including a tinge of jealousy. I wanted that car. The reality for my friend was that months turned into painstaking years as he meticulously disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt every component. He scoured junkyards, worked with fellow enthusiasts, and spent endless nights in his workshop. With each nut and bolt carefully cleaned, every inch of rust eradicated, the Mustang started to awaken from its long slumber.

In the end, it wasn’t just a car story; it was a story of dedication, passion, and the unwavering belief that a masterpiece could be rebuilt to perfection. My friend knew that he had not just restored a car but had breathed life into a legend. …bob

RAVENNA BALLOON A-FAIR

Inearly August, the city of Ravenna hosts Octane Nights, one of the largest car show events in NE Ohio. They also hold weekly cruises in the downtown area. Not to get lost in all this activity is the Ravenna Balloon A-Fair & Car Show, taking place over four days in mid-September. While four days might seem excessive, you only need to look at the schedule of events to grasp the “big” picture.

I attended on Friday and Sunday, selecting the activities that intrigued me the most. I’ll work backwards to explain what I saw during the 2022 event.

The car show, sponsored by Advanced Custom Sound, started at 3:00pm on Sunday at Sunbeau Valley Farm just outside downtown. There were trophies for several categories. Cars, trucks, lowriders, four-by-fours, and motorcycles were all in attendance. No extra cost to enter your car.

Also included in the Sunday schedule were a hot air balloon launch followed by a static display, live music, food vendors, beer and wine vendors, craft vendors, an inflatable bounce house, axe throwing, a mechanical bull, and helicopter rides. The Balloon A-Fair is held rain or shine, but keep in mind all the hot air balloon activities are “weather permitting.”

Saturday began with a parade downtown, featuring live entertainment and demonstrations. Activities moved out to Sunbeau Valley Farm where the highlights were helicopter rides and a Jeep Show with a “Car Crush” as a feature, along with all of the activities, attractions, games, and vendors mentioned above.

I was excited about the hot air balloon night glow at dusk, set for Friday evening. The balloons remained tethered as they were inflated. The inflated balloons took on a glow as the fire not only inflated the balloon but also lit them in a rainbow of colors and several wild designs. Check out my photos for a peek into the activities!

Thursday kicks the event off with a children’s parade in downtown Ravenna, and the action builds from there. I found the food vendors to be excellent, offering a large variety. I did not have the energy for some of the other things to do! There is plenty to simply watch and observe.

Shuttle buses run from some of the larger parking lots downtown out to Sunbeau Valley Farm. It’s best to check the links below for all the details that will help coordinate your visit. Believe me, you will not regret attending this event!

Itwas a dark and stormy morning on July 29th when an estimated 4,000 people gathered at Weiss Field and trudged through ankle-deep mud to peruse a plethora of haunted, paranormal, and other macabre items at The Cleveland Haunt Club’s 8th Annual Haunted Garage Sale and Hearse Cruise-in.

Joining them were more than two dozen hearses, flower cars, first-call vehicles, and a few horror-themed classics. Musical entertainment was provided by the Eerie Invaders, an Ohio-based group that infuses surf rock with voodoo rhythms. They may not have kept the rain away, but they certainly set the mood for what would have otherwise been just another gloomy morning in Avon Lake.

Hearse owner Michael Brown left his home in Redford Township, Michigan, at 4:00 in the morning to make it to the show. “The forecast started to look pretty scary around 6 a.m.,” he said. “But a little rain never hurt anyone, and this car is used to it.” Brown is the proud owner of a 1982 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser hearse he calls “The Witch Doctor.” The hearse still has its original driveline and, outside of a few missing trim pieces, has been maintained remarkably well during its 33 years in the Rust Belt.

CLE HAUNT CLUB HEARSE SHOW

The show isn’t just about celebrating all things Halloween and horror, however. It also serves as a fundraiser for Skeletons for St. Jude, a nationwide fundraising effort of Halloween/holiday home haunters who use their Halloween and/or holiday displays to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In 2022, they earned the title of the second-largest DIY St. Jude fundraiser in the nation by donating $214,165 to child cancer research, $10,143 of which was raised by the Cleveland Haunt Club alone.

Club founder Jeff Hartz is thrilled that this year’s show managed to raise more than $2,000 in donations and looks forward to the future. “We are moving to a much larger location next year to accommodate the crowd,” says Hartz. “[It will] allow us to grow our hearse cruise-in aspect of the show and bring in more themed vehicles as well.”

It’s clear that this show is simply a warm-up act for The Cleveland Haunt Club as they work toward the goal of helping raise $100,000 for Skeletons for St. Jude in 2023.

Dan’s 1957 RatCad North Jackson, OH.

This is my 1957 Caddy retro rat. It has a 1980 front subframe with coilover shocks, LS2 frome 29l005 Corvette. Complete rear clip w 4 link and coil over shocks, Ford 9 inch, 411 gears w/posi. Interior completely redone. Digital gages. All encapsulated in the stock dash. The Caddy won trophies to every cruise I took it to.

Dave’s 2001 Corvette C5

This C5 will be in the IX Centers Power Piston Show in Cleveland Ohio this year in one of the biggest shows of all time. This car is 22 years old and is original except for the wheels and tinted windows. I kept the original wheels and side lamps to put it back to it’s original state. This car still has the original paint on it and it’s never been painted or touched up. Oil and maintenance has been maintained since day one. It’s never been in the snow or salt in 22 years. All the lines are even the whole way around. This is not a trailer queen, this car is driven and has 86,000 miles on it is still like brand new.

Trent’s 1966 GT350H Medina, OH.

This is my home built 1966 Ford Mustang GT350H tribute. It has a 393 Windsor stroker and is a regular at car shows in the Medina area.

Jim’s 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass

This is my 1966 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 convertible with Tri Power. The car is equipped with a muncie 4 speed and sporting 360hp. One of 240 tri power Oldsmobile 442 convertibles produced in 1966. 1966 was the only year Oldsmobile 442’s were equipped with the tri power option out of the factory.

Fred’s 1951 Ford Crestliner Warren, OH.

The car is originally from NJ and most of the custom work on it was done during the mid 50’s to early 60’s. Custom Interior, front end restyled, ’58 Chevy quarter panels, Continental Kit, tail lights, chopped, slanted door posts, and much more!

Duane’s 1970 Chevelle SS

This is my 1970 Chevelle SS. It has a ATK 496 big block chevy, TREMEC TKX 5 speed, 10 bolt 411 posi. Dakota digital VHX gauges, I purchased this car in ‘93 while stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. I do all my own work on it, it’s never been in a shop. Only regret with it in the 30 years is when I purchased the car it was all original numbers matching 396 auto and I didn’t like big blocks so I traded the motor for a small block with a 4 speed to installed. Dumb right. Ran the small block with a small blower for years but went back to the big block a few years back. Been painted three time alway by me, and always with flames lol. Did the 5 speed this winter and kicking around swapping a nine inch with 350 gears next to make it more highway friendly and would like to be able to go to more away cruises.

Suz’s 1967 Chevy Camaro

This is the first car I ever bought. It was used and had some miles, but I have loved having it and driving it! 3 on the floor, hertz shifter. 327 V-8 engine, convertible. This is original and stock. The paint is not the original ivory color however I chose to make it a brighter yellow. It runs like a charm, I have enjoyed every day with it!
